World should take notice of Indian steps posing threat to regional peace: FM Shah

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has urged the international community to take notice of dangerous steps taken by the Indian government which are badly affecting peace in the region.

In a statement, Foreign Minister said all minorities particularly Muslims in India have been protesting against discriminatory Citizenship Act and their entire opposition is also protesting.

The Foreign Minister said that he had informed UN Security Council about apprehensions and possible threats in his letter on 12th of this month.

He said India can resort to a false flag operation to divert attention and unprovoked ceasefire violation along LoC is also continuing.

The Foreign Minister said Pakistan has befitting responded the unprovoked firing of Indian forces in which a large number of casualties have been reported and their posts also targeted.

Pak Army giving befitting response to Indian CFVs along LoC: DG ISPR

Pakistan Army giving befitting response to Indian ceasefire violations along LoC
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) clarified that no “major exchange of fire in Kiran or Neelum valley as being propagated by Indian Media” had taken place.

In a tweet, the DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor said that intermittent ceasefire violations (CFVs) by Indian Army continue along Line of Control (LoC) and are befittingly responded.

He further said that in response to the violations in Dewa Sector, there are reports of damage to Indian posts and heavy casualties to Indian soldiers. The spokesman however, denied that any major exchange of fire in Kiran or Neelum valley has taken place.

Earlier on Saturday, Prime Minister Imran Khan said the Indian army chief’s recent statement adds to Islamabad’s concerns about a false flag operation.

In a series of tweets on Saturday, the premier said, “I have been warning the international community of this for some time & am reiterating again: if India does such an operation to divert attention from its domestic chaos plus whip up war hysteria to mobilise Hindu nationalism, Pak will have no option but to give a befitting response.”

PM Khan Warns India to Give befitting Response of False Flag Operation

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday issued a strongly worded statement in which he warned the world that "Pakistan will have no option but to give a befitting response" to India if it undertakes a "false-flag operation".

The premier's statement comes in the backdrop of a recent statement by Indian army chief Bipin Rawat who had said that the situation at the restive Line of Control (LoC) can "escalate any time".

"We (Indian army) have to be prepared for the spiralling of the escalatory matrix," Rawat was quoted by Indian media as saying.

PM Imran's statement comes as a massive movement in India has taken root in which citizens are galvanising to protest the newly introduced Citizenship Amendment Act. The Act makes it easier for non-Muslims from the neighbouring countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to gain Indian citizenship.

"Over the last 5 years of Modi's government, India has been moving towards Hindu Rashtra with its Hindutva Supremacist fascist ideology. Now with the Citizens Amendment Act, all those Indians who want a pluralist India are beginning to protest and it is becoming a mass movement," said the premier.

PM Imran issued a stark reminder of the ongoing siege by Indian occupation forces in India-occupied Kashmir, saying that "a bloodbath can be expected when it is lifted".

He said as the protests in India continue to gain pace, so are the "threats to Pakistan from India".

"[The] Indian army chief's statement adds to our concerns of a false-flag operation," he added.

The premier said he had warned the international community multiple times and today he wished to reiterate that if India launches an operation "to divert attention from its domestic chaos plus whip up war hysteria to mobilise Hindu nationalism", Pakistan will be left with no choice but to respond "befittingly".

Earlier, in response to the Indian army chief's statement, Inter-Services Public Relations Director General Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor had tweeted: "Provocative statements and preparations for escalation along LoC by Indian COAS appear to be an effort, as usual, to divert world attention from widespread protests in India against CAB."

"Pakistan Armed Forces shall befittingly respond to any Indian misadventure or aggression."

Malala graces Lilly Singh Show, Here's What She discussed

The young activist Noble Prize Holder Malala Yosuf Zai
Malala has been busy with her studies but after a long time, she chose to make a TV appearance.

The young activist was a guest on Late Night with Lily Singh on Wednesday where she talked about her charity organisation Malala Fund, her digital platform Assembly and also about her personal life.

The most precious moment however, was when she revealed why she doesn't have any selfies on her Instagram, saying, "I don’t have a friend who can be there with me to take a selfie"

Lily was quick to help Malala out!

Malala also had an adorable response when asked about her family's reaction to her Nobel prize.

"Parents always get excited, for them it was such a big day but my little brother was like, 'Look, you’ve won the Noble Peace Prize but it doesn’t mean you can be a bossy sister."

She added, "For them it was like not much has changed, even when they come to university and see my room they are like why haven’t you cleaned up, when did you last change your bed sheets, why aren’t your clothes in the wardrobe, did you not wash your dishes, all these sort of things."

For fun, Lily decided to teach Malala how to give a job interview and we love that she has a good sense of humour and isn't afraid to flex
When asked about her New Year's resolution, she said, "It’s not just a New Year's resolution but also the start of a new decade and this last year has been all about young activism so for the new decade, I want to keep fighting for girls education; there are 130 million girls out of school and I hope we can achieve more. So I wish we can get more girls to go to school in the next decade."

Malala Fund has been active in not only raising awareness about girls' education but also has been doing its best to make it happen. It supports the education of young girls from not just Pakistan but many countries who wouldn't have access to it otherwise, such Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Ethiopa and many more
About her digital platform, she explained, "Through Assembly, Malala Fund is sharing stories of girls over 90 countries in different languages. It’s a platform for girls and by girls where they can share their voice and you can listen and share their stories and raise awareness in your community and talk to people. Whatever step you take, it actually matters so I really encourage you all to do something for girls’ education."

Malala sees the power and potential in young girls raising their voice as she speaks on Greta Thurnberg, saying, "I think it’s amazing to see young girls taking the leadership for these social changed and I love it."

"I always used to say when I was 11 and I was fighting for my right to education I used to think I have to grow up to change the world but I realized you don’t need to grow up to make a change. You can do it right now."

Pakistan has rejected the assertions in joint statement of US-India two plus two dialogue and joint press availability in Washington.

In a statement, Foreign Office Spokesperson said we take strong exception to the unwarranted references to Pakistan in the Joint Statement issued in Washington after the conclusion of US-India Dialogue. The Spokesperson said failing to take cognizance of this serious situation is tantamount to abdication of international responsibility.

The Spokesperson said international community recognizes Pakistan's efforts, sacrifices and successes in the fight against terrorism. We believe that India's state-terrorism in occupied Kashmir and its threats to Pakistan imperil regional peace and security.

Pakistan fight back after Shaheen's five-fer in second Test against Sri Lanka

Pakistan fight back after Shaheen's five-fer in second Test against Sri Lanka
Lanky paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi took a maiden five-wicket haul to lead Pakistan's fightback after Sri Lanka gained a crucial lead in the second Test in Karachi on Friday.

The 19-year-old paceman took 5-77 and was ably supported by new-ball partner Mohammad Abbas (4-55) to keep Sri Lanka down to 271 on a tricky National Stadium pitch.

That gave the visitors a lead of 80 runs over Pakistan's first-innings total of 191.

By the close of second day's play Pakistan had wiped off 57 of the deficit for no loss but they still trail by 23 runs with all 10 wickets in hand and three days to play.

Opener Abid Ali — who became the first batsman ever to hit a debut hundred in both Test and one-day international in the first match in Rawalpindi — was unbeaten on 32 and Shan Masood on 21 not out.

The first Test in Rawalpindi ended in a draw due to bad weather, leaving both teams to fight it out for the series win in Karachi. The series is part of the ongoing World Test championship with nine teams competing. The top two teams will play the final in June 2021.

Sri Lanka fought through Dinesh Chandimal who made 74 and Dilruwan Perera who made a fighting 48 batting at number nine.

With his team wobbling at 80-5 in the morning, Chandimal built partnerships of 67 with Dhananjaya de Silva (32) for the sixth wicket, 37 for the seventh wicket with Niroshan Dickwella (21) and then another 51 with Perera for the eighth.

“It was not an easy pitch to bat on,” Chandimal said.

“At one time we were struggling at 80-5 and I knew first we have to get the runs they got, so I just try to play positive and it helped. “I think if we get early wickets tomorrow and keep them down to below 250 then that will be a winning score.”

Chandimal was finally dismissed by part-time spinner Haris Sohail, caught at backward point after he mistimed a cut. He hit 10 boundaries in his 143-ball knock.

The extended two-and-a-half hour first session belonged to Pakistan who took three early wickets after Sri Lanka resumed at 64-3.

It were Abbas and Shaheen who rattled the Sri Lankan batting. Abbas had nightwatchman Lasith Embuldeniya caught in the slip for 13 before left-armer Afridi dismissed Angelo Mathews, also for 13. De Silva, who scored a century in the first Test, batted with grit to frustrate Pakistan and take Sri Lanka to 170-6 at lunch.

Shaheen broke the stand by luring De Silva into hooking straight into the hands of deep square-leg fielder Abbas, who held a running catch. Perera also added an invaluable 36 for the ninth wicket with Vishwa Fernando to increase Sri Lanka's lead before Shaheen took the last two wickets in three balls.

Shahen's previous best of 4-64 came in the Centurion Test against South Africa earlier this year. Perera hit six boundaries and a six in his 84-ball stay.

The Test series — part of the ongoing World Test championship — is the first in Pakistan since a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in 2009 suspended international cricket in the country.

6.4-magnitude earthquake rocks northern Pakistan

6.4-magnitude earthquake rocks northern Pakistan
The northern areas of the country, as well as parts of Afghanistan, were jolted by a 6.4-magnitude earthquake on Friday, according to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre in Islamabad.

The earthquake struck at a depth of 210km with the epicentre in a sparsely populated, remote mountain area in Badakhshan province in the northeast of Afghanistan, said the USGS, which put the quake at 6.1 on the Richter Scale.

According to a damage assessment report released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), a child was injured and a house damaged in the Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The 4-year-old boy from Hatandara village received injuries when a boundary wall collapsed.

PDMA spokesperson Taimur Ali said the PDMA officials are in contact with district's disaster units and administration. So far no loss of life has been reported.

He said that the tremors created fear and panic across the KP and mountainous area of Malakand division.

Among the cities in Pakistan where "strong" tremors were felt, were Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Murree, Mansehra, Battagram, Chiniot, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

According to the USGS, two short tremors in quick succession forced residents into the streets in Kabul and Islamabad.

Parliamentarians vacated the Parliament House in Islamabad where a session was underway and officials from the Foreign Office also stepped outside.

The USGS estimated there would be few economic losses from the quake, with “a low likelihood of casualties and damage. “

According to IndiaToday, tremors were also felt in Delhi and the northern parts of India, including Mathura, Lucknow, Prayagraj, and India-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

A powerful 5.6-magnitude earthquake had jolted several cities and northern parts of the country in September, leaving at least 38 people dead and over 300 others injured.

Lawyer Hassaan Niazi criticises media for singling him out 'because I am Imran Khan's nephew'

Lawyer Hassaan Niazi
More than a week after the attack on Lahore's Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) by a group of lawyers, Prime Minister Imran Khan's nephew Hassaan Niazi obtained interim bail in the case on Friday from an anti-terrorism court and denied his involvement in any offence at a press conference.

Niazi was among more than 200 lawyers who had gone underground to avoid arrest. Police had conducted multiple raids to arrest him in the attack case but were unable to catch him.

Addressing a presser after obtaining bail, Niazi claimed that he was the first lawyer in the country who had expressed regret on Twitter over the attack on the hospital.

The premier's nephew, however, demanded across-the-board accountability and said that he was unfairly singled out. He urged the media to play its role with responsibility.

"For the past seven to eight days, I have received abuse from across the world. I want to explain my viewpoint over the issue as I am answerable to the nation," he said, adding that on the day of the attack he was at the PIC because it was a "peaceful" protest and police had granted permission for it.

"If it wasn't a peaceful protest, the question is that why did the police not intercept it. I had come to participate in a peaceful protest as I hadn't foreseen what would occur there.

"Show me if I have torched the [police] vehicle, show me if I was holding a stick, show me if I have attacked the PIC, give me some proof if I have incited someone or led the crowd," said a teary-eyed Niazi.

He claimed that he was targeted and singled out only because he was the nephew of the prime minister. He also criticised the media for highlighting his face while covering the issue as a result of which, he said, the entire world was hating him. "You people have tried to end my career," he said while addressing reporters.

"The most brutal part of the story was that the media's coverage of me overshadowed the mishandling on part of the government and the administration," he said, adding that prior to the incident he had approached Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar as well as the provincial law and health ministers, asking them to resolve the issue between the lawyers and doctors. He regretted that he was given the cold shoulder and warned that he will give a detailed report to the prime minister on the role of the provincial government in the matter.

Clarifying his position, the lawyer said that he hadn't torched the police van; instead, he said he had approached the vehicle and opened its door to ensure that no one inside was in need of help.

Earlier in the day, an anti-terrorism court accepted Niazi's plea to grant him bail until December 24 against two surety bonds worth Rs100,000 each. The court also directed the Shadman police to submit a detailed report of the incident.

Following the incident that claimed three lives, police authorities had faced severe criticism for not nominating Niazi in the cases registered against the lawyers who attacked the hospital.

Two FIRs were lodged against 250 lawyers after they stormed the state-run cardiac hospital, damaged public property and beat government employees. Police framed terrorism, murder and street crime charges in the cases lodged on the complaint of the PIC chief executive and the Shadman SHO.

After going through several CCTV/mobile phone footages and obtaining credible information from other sources, police higher-ups nominated 21 lawyers in the FIRs which were lodged last week.

An official had said mobile phone footage that surfaced on the day of the attack caught Niazi throwing stones on police on Jail Road. The footage went viral on the social media, he said at the time, adding that police neither nominated him in the FIRs nor did they arrest him.

Niazi is the son of Hafeezullah Niazi, a columnist who is a strong critic of the PTI since his falling out with Prime Minister Imran a few years ago.

A senior police officer had denied the allegation of favouring Niazi, saying all the lawyers who participated in the violent protest would be treated equally.

US to resume military training programme for Pakistan: State Department

US to resume military training programme for Pakistan
The Trump administration has approved a resumption of Pakistan’s participation in a coveted US military training and educational programme more than a year after it was suspended, the State Department said on Thursday.

The decision to resume Islamabad’s participation in the International Military Education and Training Program, or IMET — for more than a decade a pillar of US-Pakistani military ties — underscores warming relations that have followed meetings this year between US President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Washington also has credited Islamabad with helping to facilitate negotiations on a US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. The talks recently resumed between the United States and the Taliban, who US officials say receive sanctuary and other aid from the Pakistan’s military-led intelligence agency. Pakistan denies the charge.

The State Department administers IMET. It was a small facet of US security aid programmes for Pakistan worth some $2 billion that remain suspended on orders that Trump abruptly issued in January 2018 to compel the nuclear-armed South Asian nation to crackdown on militants. Trump’s decision, announced in a tweet, blindsided US officials.

A State Department spokeswoman said in an email that Trump’s 2018 decision to suspend security assistance authorised “narrow exceptions for programmes that support vital US national security interests.” The decision to restore Pakistani participation in IMET was “one such exception,” she said.

The programme “provides an opportunity to increase bilateral cooperation between our countries on shared priorities,” she added. “We want to continue to build on this foundation through concrete actions that advance regional security and stability.”

A second US official said on condition of anonymity that Pakistan was in the process of selecting officers to send to the United States.

The restart of the programme, however, is subject to approval by Congress. Republican and Democratic aides for the Senate and House of Representatives committees with jurisdiction over the process did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

IMET affords spaces to foreign military officers at US military education institutions, such as the US Army War College and the US Naval War College.

Pakistan’s suspension from the programme in August 2018 prompted the cancellation of 66 slots set aside that year for Pakistani military officers in one of the first known impacts of Trump’s decision to halt security assistance.

The US military traditionally has sought to shield such educational programmes from political tensions, arguing that the ties built by bringing foreign military officers to the United States pay long-term dividends.

Saudi Arabia pressured Pakistan into withdrawing from Malaysia summit: Turkish President

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Saudi Arabia issued economic threats to Pakistan to pressurise it into withdrawing from a gathering of leaders from many Islamic nations in Malaysia.

The four-day conference, which opened in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday to address some of the Islamic world's thorniest issues, was boycotted by a handful of countries including Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.

Saudi Arabia said its leaders were not attending the summit because it was being held outside the aegis of the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation based in Jeddah.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who along with his Malaysian counterpart and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan had been a prime mover behind the summit, made a last-minute decision to withdraw from the meeting.

But, speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, Erdogan claimed that Saudi Arabia had threatened Pakistan with economic consequences to coerce it into skipping the moot.

"Unfortunately, we see that Saudi Arabia pressures Pakistan," Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah quoted Erdogan as saying.

"Now, there are promises that the country has given to Pakistan regarding the central bank. However, more than that, there are 4 million Pakistanis working in Saudi Arabia. They (threaten by saying that they) would send (Pakistanis) back and re-employ Bangladeshi people instead," Erdogan was quoted as saying.

"We see Saudi Arabia issuing economic threats to Pakistan and threatening to replace the 4 million Pakistani workers with Bangladeshi workers," the Turkey-based TRT World news channel quoted Erdogan as saying.

The Turkish president added that the Saudi kingdom has used similar threatening tactics regarding State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), threatening that they would withdraw their money.

The Pakistani central bank received its third and last $1 billion tranche in January this year as part of a balance-of-payments support program from Riyadh.

Erdogan claimed that Pakistan had to obey such threats from Riyadh due to the economic difficulties being faced by the country.

Last week, the Pakistani prime minister flew to Riyadh for a meeting with the Saudi leadership.

On Wednesday, the Saudi Arabia-based OIC criticised the Malaysia summit in a statement, saying that it was against the interests of the Muslim world to hold meetings outside the organisation, which has for decades acted as the collective Islamic voice.

OIC Secretary-General Yousf al-Othaimeen said the Kuala Lumpur summit was splintering Islamic solidarity.

“Any weakening of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation is a weakening of Islam and Muslims,” he said.

Took all decisions as judge without fear or discrimination: CJP Khosa

Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa
Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa said on Friday that he had taken all decisions as a judge without fear or discrimination.

The chief justice, who will retire after midnight tonight, said that a horrendous campaign against him and the judiciary had been started after the special court released its verdict in the treason case against General (retd) Pervez Musharraf a few days ago.

The special court sentenced the former military dictator to death for abrogating the constitution and imposing a state of emergency in the country on November 3, 2007. Paragraph 66 of the verdict called on law enforcement agencies to arrest Musharraf and if found dead, drag his corpse to the D-Chowk in Islamabad and hang it for three days.

"The results or reactions to my decisions are not important" said the chief justice. "I always did what I thought was right."

Justice Khosa said that a judge's nerves must be of steel and his heart must be like that of a lion. The chief justice talked about allegations against him that he had supported the special court's verdict against Musharraf in a meeting with journalists.

"Accusations that I exerted undue influence on this [Musharraf high treason] case are baseless," he said. "I hope the truth will come out about this."

Musharraf, 76, is currently in Dubai where he is seeking treatment of multiple diseases.

His high treason case had been heard by a special bench comprising Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth of the Peshawar High Court, Justice Shahid Karim of the Lahore High Court and Justice Nazar Akbar of the Sindh High Court (SHC). They had been appointed on the orders of the Supreme Court.

The court, in its short order had said it had analysed complaints, records, arguments and facts in the case for three months. The court added it had found Musharraf guilty of high treason according to Article 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan for imposing a state of emergency on November 03, 2007.

It was a majority verdict, with two of the three judges giving the decision against Musharraf. SHC's Justice Akbar had dissented from the verdict.

IMF approves 2nd tranche of $450m for Pakistan
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved second tranche worth of $450 million for Pakistan under the $6 billion Extended Fund Facility in a meeting of its executive board in Washington.

The IMF in its board meeting said that Pakistan’s economic reform program is on track while decisive policy implementation by the Pakistani authorities is helping to preserve economic stability in the country.

IMF said that the authorities remain committed to expanding the social safety nets, reducing poverty, and narrowing the gender gap.

The federal government of Pakistan had received the first tranche from IMF post-approval of the under the extended loan programme of $6 billion.

Earlier in November, Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance, Revenue and Economic Affairs Abdul Hafeez Shaikh had said that IMF, after holding successful dialogues, showed agreement to release the second tranche amounting to $450 million loan to Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference along with his economic team in Islamabad, Abdul Hafeez Shaikh said that IMF mission expressed confidence and lauded the incumbent government over meeting all performance criteria.

He had maintained, “We have returned $2.4bn loan taken by the previous government and added that the PTI-led government did not borrow a single penny from the State Bank of Pakistan during the current fiscal year.”

It is noteworthy to mention here that Pakistan has demanded to deal with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) matters separately from the IMF bailout package. The federal government has also sought the elimination of the condition for guaranteeing the financial body for the issuance of bonds.

Our fears have proven true: DG ISPR

Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor
Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor said on Thursday that the fears of the armed forces have proven true after a special court issued its detailed verdict on the high treason case against General (r) Pervez Musharraf.

"The concerns that were expressed in response to the short verdict in the case against Musharraf have proven true today after the detailed verdict," he said.

The DG ISPR said that the words used in the verdict were beneath humanity, religion and ethics. He said that Pakistan Army was a responsible institution and its soldiers had taken oath to protect the country.

Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said that for the armed forces, the country came first and institutions later.

"We will not let this stability be reversed under any circumstances," he said. "Pakistan Army will fail the attempts of external as well as internal enemies."

The DG ISPR said that the armed forces knew how to defend the institution's integrity and will give an effective response to internal and external enemies of the state.

He said that the prime minister and army chief had spoken in detail over the verdict given by a special court hearing General (r) Musharraf's high treason case.

"The army chief met the prime minister and conveyed the sentiments of the armed forces to to him," he said.

The DG ISPR said that he will inform the nation about the decisions taken during the meeting between the army chief and the prime minister, soon.

He said that the armed forces were not an institution but were like a family.

High treason case

A special court court had sentenced Musharraf to death on Tuesday for imposing a state of emergency on November 3, 2007, adding that it had found him guilty of high treason in accordance with Article 6 of the Constitution of Pakistan.

The detailed verdict of the court was issued earlier today (Thursday). Dismissing criticism of a trial conducted 'in haste', the special court in its detailed verdict stated that Musharraf had “been afforded more than his due share of fair trial” and “given every opportunity to defend himself”.

The court further said that “the facts of the case are well documented” and “clearly demonstrate guilt on part of the accused”.

"The trial of high treason is the requirement of the Constitution against those individuals who undermine or attempt to undermine the Constitution by any means," the judgement stated.

"This Court after the presentation of undeniable, irrefutable and unimpeachable evidence by the prosecution against the accused reaches to the conclusion that indeed accused [Musharraf] is guilty and deserves exemplary punishment.

FM Qurashi urges UNSC to play role in averting Indian threats to regional stability
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has urged the UN Security Council to play its rightful role in averting any threats to peace and security in the region as well as bringing an immediate end to the suffering of the Kashmiri people under occupation.

In a series of letters to UN Secretary General and President of General Assembly, he has consistently updated them on the grave situation in Indian occupied Jammu & Kashmir.

The Foreign Minister in his letters conveyed Pakistan’s serious concerns over India’s illegal and unilateral actions in IOJ&K and the resultant humanitarian situation as well as steps on the ground posing serious risks to peace and security.

In his latest letter dated 12 December 2019,he apprised the UN Security Council and Secretary General on Indian actions that continue to escalate tensions in an already tense environment in South Asia.

The Indian actions include its leadership’s bellicose rhetoric, issuance of new ‘political maps’, unprecedented LoC ceasefire violations, deployment and testing of missiles of various ranges and capabilities, and attempts to change the demographic structure of occupied Jammu & Kashmir.

The Foreign Minister said the bellicose rhetoric emanating from Indian leadership is further vitiating the atmosphere, threatening inter alia to review their nuclear doctrine, establish “physical jurisdiction” over Azad Jammu & Kashmir and “dismember” Pakistan.

He said to prevent possible escalation, Pakistan has proposed strengthening of UNMOGIP’s presence in the region.

The Minister said a reinforced UNMOGIP could serve as an important tool in the hands of the Security Council for maintenance of peace and security in the region.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said the Security Council must play a proactive role in peaceful resolution of this long-standing dispute on the Council’s agenda.

Sri Lanka skipper regrets not coming to Pakistan for earlier series

Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne
Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne says he now regrets not coming to Pakistan earlier for the one-day international (ODI) and T20Is series in October.

Speaking to media in Karachi ahead of his side’s second Test against Pakistan, Karunaratne said that visiting Pakistan for the series has changed his perception about the country.

“Yeah, now I regret that,” said Karunaratne referring to his earlier decision of not touring Pakistan in September/October.

“I think at that time it was hard decision to take because I never had been in Pakistan and I had heard things on the news and on social media which were not good. But once the guys who came here gave us a really good feedback, we all seniors decided to visit Pakistan and play the Test series,” he shared.

Now that we are here, I feel good. I feel that I should have come and play ODIs,” the 31-year-old said.

He also appreciated the efforts by the Pakistani security officials, who Karunaratne said made the visitors feel one hundred per cent safe.

“I can say that I feel really safe here. The security guys are giving more than one hundred per cent and that is why we are feeling very good. We also went out for dinner and we enjoyed. My team and I feel safe here and I can say that Pakistan is now safe for the cricket. I can’t tell other teams but I can surely give my opinion,” he added.

When asked about any changes for the Islanders for the team tomorrow, the Sri Lankan captain confirmed that his side will go with at least one change in the second Test.

He, however, added that his side will wait till the morning to make a final call on the playing XI for the second Test

“We will definitely have one change, Kasun Rajitha will not play tomorrow, we have another pacer in place of him,” he confirmed.

“But we haven’t decided on our final XI yet, we will have a look at wicket tomorrow and see how things are in the morning what they are going to do with wickets, weather they leave the grass or not. I feel it will have turn on later on, that’s why we are waiting what curator is going to do tomorrow,” he shared.

Karunaratne added that players do not have much idea about the conditions of Karachi and the home team will surely have an advantage but if his players can apply right thing on right time then it will be a good contest between the two teams.

He added that ICC Test Championship has made Test cricket more competitive.

“We used to play home and away series previously but it wasn’t that much exciting but now competition is everywhere. You have to play a number of matches and you’ve to dominate in all games and all conditions to stay on top. I personally like the way ICC Championship has shaped up the Test championship,” he said.

“India is currently on top, Australia is following. We have to do well to stay on top in championship as well and we are looking forward to get maximum points,” Karunaratne added.

US special envoy Khalilzad in Kabul amid renewed push for deal

Zalmay Khalilzad
The US special envoy leading negotiations with the Taliban met with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in Kabul on Wednesday, an official said, amid a renewed push to reach an accord with the insurgents.

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad and Ghani discussed several topics including the need for a ceasefire, Ghani's spokesman Sediq Seddiqi said.

“The president also expressed his concerns about the continued violence by the Taliban,” Sediqqi said.

“The president reiterated that the government and people of Afghanistan want a sustainable peace.”

Khalilzad has spent more than a year leading a push for a deal with the Taliban that would see the US reduce its military footprint in Afghanistan in return for security guarantees from the insurgents.

While the US has kept Ghani apprised of developments, the Afghan president has been cut out of negotiations because the Taliban refuse to recognise his authority.

A US-Taliban deal had been all but signed in early September, but President Donald Trump scuttled the agreement at the last minute, citing concerns about ongoing Taliban violence including a Kabul bombing that killed an American soldier.

Talks resumed on December 7 amid a reduction in violence in Kabul but were paused following another Taliban attack, this time at Bagram airbase north of Kabul.

The US embassy in Kabul declined to comment immediately, but talks appear to have resumed again this week in Doha.

The death penalty is the ultimate cruel and inhuman says Amnesty on Musharaf conviction

Gen Musharraf
Amnesty International, a leading campaigner for human rights, said on Tuesday that Pakistan’s judgement against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf proved that no one was above the law but strongly opposed the death sentence.

Earlier in the day, Gen Musharraf was convicted of ‘high treason’ and sentenced to death for suspending the Constitution when he imposed a state of emergency in November 2007.

Responding to the conviction Amnesty International’s Deputy South Asia Director, Omar Waraich, said: “No one is above the law, and it is encouraging to see Pakistan break with a history of impunity for powerful generals. At the same time, it is crucial that he receives a fair trial without recourse to the death penalty.”

Amnesty has been campaigning for decades for the abolition of death penalty.

“The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment; it metes out vengeance, not justice,” said Mr Waraich while explaining the group’s position on this issue.

Amnesty, however, demanded that Gen Musharraf and the government he led must be held to account for all human rights violations committed during their time in office, not just a select few.

The statement also listed the violations that the Musharraf government committed while in power. “It includes extrajudicial executions, enforced disappearances, torture, arbitrary detentions, deaths in custody, unlawful killings and other serious human rights violations committed against the political opposition, human rights defenders, members of civil society and suspected members of armed groups,” the group said.

During Gen Musharraf’s nearly nine-year rule, Amnesty International documented widespread human rights violations conducted by his government, including the killing, enforced disappearances and torture of members of armed groups, political activists and human rights defenders.

Rimmel Mohydin, a campaigner for Amnesty International, said that while Gen Musharraf “deserve(d) punishment” and has “committed many, many crimes”, awarding of a death penalty was “wrong”

UN chief concerned over use of excessive force by Indian forces

United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres
United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday expressed concern over the use of excessive force by Indian security forces in the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The statement was given by the UN chief’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric in a regular press briefing held at the UN’s Headquarters in New York.

The spokesperson called for “restraint and urged full respect for the rights of freedom of opinion and expression and peaceful assembly”.

Protests across Indian cities have been going on since the controversial law was passed by the parliament.

In what has become a major challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets.

Protests, riots and clashes have claimed six lives and injured dozens.

The law, passed by the parliament last week, grants citizenship to non-Muslim illegal immigrants from Muslim-majority countries in the region. Modi's Hindu-nationalist ruling party argues the measure protects persecuted minorities in these countries.

But opponents say the legislation is part of Modi's Hindu-nationalist masterplan to move modern India away from its secular foundations.

In one of the biggest nationwide protests since an anti-corruption movement swept the South Asian nation in 2011, demonstrations kicked off in the northeast and east before spreading to the capital New Delhi and the south.

Chinese leader Xi visits gambling hub Macau as nearby Hong Kong seethes

Chinese leader Xi visits gambling hub Macau as nearby Hong Kong seethes
MACAU/HONG KONG (Reuters) - China’s President Xi Jinping arrived in Macau on Wednesday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its handover to China, and is expected to announce economic perks as a reward for its stability and loyalty as protests rock nearby Hong Kong.

Security was tight in the gambling hub, especially for people arriving from Hong Kong. Among the polices Xi is expected to announce are steps to diversifying the former Portuguese colony’s economic base beyond its casinos.

“We will join hands to draw the blueprint for Macao’s future development,” Xi said after arriving at Macau’s airport, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency.

Among the measures Xi is expected to unveil are plans to develop it into a financial center, including a new yuan-denominated stock exchange.

Xi’s visit, his longest official trip to Macau, will include meetings with government officials and business representatives, as well as the swearing-in of Macau’s newly chosen Beijing-backed leader, Ho Iat-seng, on Friday.

Macau returned to Chinese rule on Dec. 20, 1999, with the same “one country, two systems” formula aimed at preserving autonomy under which Hong Kong is governed.

While protesters in Hong Kong, across the mouth of the Pearl River, are infuriated by what they see as Beijing encroaching on their freedoms, Macau has seen little dissent.

Protests are very rare in the territory with more than half of Macau’s 620,000 population immigrating from China in recent decades.
“The central government and the Chinese people are proud of the achievements and progress,” Xi said, according to Xinhua.

Flags and red congratulatory banners fluttered along roads and over buildings around the city in preparation for the anniversary celebrations on Friday.

“Macau is the best, better than Hong Kong. Hong Kong has been taken over by those rioters and we are all affected,” said a 73-year-old woman surnamed Cheung.

TRANSPORT RESTRICTIONS
Some journalists arriving from the former British colony of Hong Kong, which has been rocked by anti-government protests for six months, were not allowed entry to Macau, including a reporter for RTHK, blocked for security concerns, the Hong Kong broadcaster said on its website.

Many other media people faced lengthy questioning and had their identification cards photographed as they arrived in the city, according to a Reuters reporter.

Macau’s government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The heads of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong have also been barred from entering the city in the run-up to Xi’s visit, the chamber heads reported, adding that authorities did not give a reason.

Beijing has also clamped down on visas since November for mainland residents going to Macau until after the Dec. 20 anniversary, as part of the security restrictions, according to Vitaly Umansky, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein in Hong Kong.

The restrictions would put additional pressure on sliding gambling revenues, he said. Macau’s casinos contribute about 80 percent of government income.
Macau ferry operator Turbo Jet said it was reducing the number of ferry sailings to and from Hong Kong by about half due to security checks. Ferries this week are only operating every 30 minutes compared with every 15 minutes normally.

The changes were made because of “instructions by Macau authorities”, the company said on its website.

The city’s light rail transit system which opened to the public on Dec. 10, will be suspended for three days from Wednesday due to security measures, the operator said.

Hollywood cheers 'Rise of Skywalker' at film's world premiere

Hollywood cheers 'Rise of Skywalker' at film's world premiere
Droids rolled down a blue carpet and stormtroopers kept order at the world premiere on Monday of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”, the ninth and final movie episode in the sci-fi fable of a celebrated Jedi master.

Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) closed off an entire city block in the center of Hollywood to host the celebrity-studded debut screening of the highly-anticipated film, which opens for the general public in theaters around the world on Thursday.

Staff waving glowing light sabers guided premiere attendees, among them “Star Wars” royalty Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill, to a ceremonial blue carpet under a large tent, outfitted to resemble a spaceship hangar beneath a star-lit sky. Replicas of three X-wing Starfighters dangled overhead.

Actor Harrison Ford, whose Hans Solo character died in the 2015 installment “The Force Awakens,” joined the celebration, as did Adam Driver who plays Solo’s progeny turned knight of the Dark Side, Kylo Ren. Other A-listers invited as guests included directors Steven Spielberg and Spike Lee, and actress Frances McDormand.

“Well, this is terrifying,” director J.J. Abrams said as he introduced the movie inside the packed Dolby Theatre.

“Nothing brings people together quite like Star Wars.”

“Rise of Skywalker” caps a blockbuster film series that ranks as the second highest-grossing movie franchise of all time, with more than $9.2 billion in ticket sales.

It concludes a story that began 42 years ago in 1977, when filmmaker George Lucas introduced a young hero named Luke Skywalker (Hamill) and delighted audiences with a galaxy of metallic robots called droids, a race of tall, furry warriors known as Wookiees and a host of other eclectic characters.

BOUNTY HUNTER

At Monday’s premiere, superfans dressed as favorites from the heroine scavenger Rey to bounty hunter Boba Fett and villain Darth Vader. Hamill received a standing ovation when he was introduced, as did composer John Williams.

Initial reactions were largely positive. Throughout the film, the audience applauded, gasped and cheered at major plot twists.

“Yeah, J.J.!,” one person yelled after a surprising moment.

Fan Katie Wilson said the movie “completely blew my mind”.

“They did such a good job being able to mix this new ‘Star Wars’ world that they created,” she said. “With the nostalgia that the fans that grew up with Star Wars for years and years love.”
Princess Leia returned in the movie - despite the 2016death of Carrie Fisher, the actress who played her - by way of unused footage from “The Force Awakens”.

While the latest film brings the Skywalker family’s saga to an end, Disney plans future “Star Wars” movies with new characters starting in December 2022, though the company has not released details.

“We’re going to make sure we take our time until we know that it’s right,” Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger said.

Won't let stability be compromised at any cost: Army chief

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa said on Wednesday that the Special Services Group (SSG) was the army's pride and that the armed forces have brought stability by failing all inimical forces operating against the country.

The army chief visited the SSG headquarters where he spoke to soldiers.

“We have brought stability by failing all inimical forces operating against Pakistan. We shall never let it go away at any cost. SSG is our pride with

myriad contributions towards defence of country through its valiant officers & soldiers since creation of Pakistan," the DG ISPR quoted the army chief as saying.

The statement from General Bajwa comes a day after the Supreme Court handed a death penalty to former army chief General (r) Pervez Musharraf for imposing a state of emergency on November 3, 2007 and abrogating the constitution.

Musharraf, 76, is currently in Dubai where he is seeking treatment of multiple diseases.

The Pakistan Army reacted to the decision by saying that it was in "a lot of pain and anguish" over Musharraf's conviction.

"An ex-army chief, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and President of Pakistan, who has served the country for over 40 years, fought wars for the defence of the country can surely never be a traitor," the military's public relations wing said in a statement.

Leaders and senior representatives from some 20 Muslim nations flocked to the Malaysian capital on Wednesday to discuss issues agitating Muslims globally at a summit Saudi Arabia decided to snub, forcing Pakistan to duck out after first agreeing to attend.

Speaking to a group of journalists on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi confirmed that Pakistan would not participate in the event after concerns from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

No agenda for the Kuala Lumpur Summit has been released, but it could address age-old disputes in Kashmir and the Middle East, the conflicts in Syria and Yemen, the plight of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim minority, and mounting outrage over China's camps for Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang — a subject that will doubtless upset Beijing — as well as how to counter the spread of Islamophobia in the world.

Two of the world's most outspoken leaders, Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan will be giving their views during the four-day summit, which begins with a welcome dinner on Wednesday and wraps up on Saturday.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamid Al-Thani, whose countries have tense relations with Saudi Arabia, are also attending.

Explaining its decision to stay away, Saudi Arabia said the summit was the wrong forum for matters of importance to the world's 1.75 billion Muslims, though some analysts suspected the Kingdom feared being diplomatically isolated by regional rivals Iran, Qatar and Turkey.

Saudi state news agency SPA reported that on a call with Mahathir on Tuesday, Saudi King Salman reaffirmed that such issues should be discussed through the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

A Saudi source said Saudi Arabia was invited but would only attend if the meeting was held under the auspices of the OIC.

“They are very concerned about it,” the source said of the summit, declining to be named as he was not authorised to talk to media.

The Saudi government's centre for international communication did not respond to a request for comment.

The absence of Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, whose king also holds the title of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madina, demonstrates some of the divisions in the Muslim world.

“The issue is that you've got blocs,” said James Dorsey, a senior fellow at S Rajaratnam School of International Studies and Middle East Institute in Singapore.

“You've got a Saudi-UAE bloc, Turkey-Qatari bloc, and Pakistan in the middle trying to hedge their bets.”

Indonesia, the country with the world's largest Muslim population, would be represented by Vice President Ma'ruf Amin, a cleric overseeing the country's fight against radicalisation and terrorism.

Even as delegations were arriving in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian officials were unable to provide a final list of who would be attending. Mahathir's office said that invitations had been sent to all 56 OIC member states, but officials said only about 20 were sending delegations, and fewer would be led by heads of state.

Defending the summit, Mahathir's office issued a statement saying there was no intention to create a “new bloc as alluded to by some of its critics”.

“In addition, the Summit is not a platform to discuss religion or religious affairs but specifically to address the state of affairs of the Muslim Ummah,” it said.

Speaking to Reuters last week, Mahathir expressed frustration with the OIC's inability to forge a united front and act decisively.

During that interview, the Malaysian leader also raised the possibility that the alleged mistreatment of Muslim Uighurs in China's Xinjiang would be discussed.

Beijing describes the camps where Uighur Muslims are being held as “vocational training centres”, while critics say they are mass internment camps.
