Shehbaz demands parliamentary committee be formed over NAB chairperson issue

Opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairperson Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal
Opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif demanded Friday that a parliamentary committee be formed to probe National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairperson Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal over an alleged sexual misconduct scandal aired by a private news channel that the anti-corruption watchdog refuted.

"The committee should investigate the issue of the NAB chairperson," Sharif, also the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), said. "The committee should question the prime minister [Imran Khan] and the NAB chairperson."

On the other hand, former PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said: "Today, it is evident that the NAB chairperson is being blackmailed and pressure is being built to take action against the Opposition."

Abbasi added that the prime minister, his friends and advisers, and the PM House were complicit in the matter, which, he termed, was "not something insignificant".

"The investigation should be done on the Parliamentary forum," he said, adding that the truth must be shared with the public.

On Thursday night, however, Sharif had said his party would stay out of the recent matter relating to Iqbal, the NAB chairperson.

"Our viewpoint on NAB is principled — which is legal in nature and we will keep voicing our concerns on all forums," Shehbaz said on Twitter.

"PML-N has nothing to do with anybody’s private life and will stick to its political and legal narrative!"

Earlier, the anti-graft body refuted the contents of a story — which involved alleged sexual misconduct, the proofs of which were shared as audio recording and video footage — on its chairperson.

The story aired by the private news channel is "against the facts, fabricated and based on lies", it said in a statement on Thursday.

"This is a group of blackmailers aiming to damage the repute of the NAB, chairman NAB," it added, noting that it had apprehended two individuals, "despite pressure".

Pakistani rupee inches further up against US dollar in interbank, open markets

Pakistani rupee inches further up against US dollar in interbank, open markets
The rupee registered gains against the US dollar in the interbank and open markets for a third consecutive day on Friday, as the Pakistani currency slowly recovered after hitting record lows against the greenback earlier this week.

The US dollar was down Rs0.53 to close the day at Rs150.91 in the interbank market. In the open market, the greenback shed Rs0.80 was being traded at Rs151.70 by the close of the day.

The price of gold also dropped by a further Rs500 to Rs70,400 per tola (11.33 grams).

The rupee had been registering record lows against the US dollar earlier in the week following the announcement of a $6 billion bailout agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

The IMF accord, which is still pending final approval by the Fund, foresees a 'market-determined' rate for the rupee. The rupee—which many analysts consider overvalued—was previously managed by the central bank in a de facto controlled float.

The State Bank of Pakistan, which lifted interest rates by 150 basis points on Monday to 12.25%, said it was watching the foreign exchange market closely and would act in the case of "unwarranted volatility". It said the recent slide "reflects the continuing resolution of accumulated imbalances of the past and some role of supply and demand factors".

The sliding rupee had caused alarm in Pakistan, which is already facing inflation likely to average over 7% for the year and surging costs for fuel and power—both heavily influenced by the dollar exchange rate.

North Korea suspends talks until US ‘changes method’

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump
North Korea says it is halting its negotiations with the United States over its nuclear and missile programs until Washington changes its zero-sum approach toward Pyongyang.

In a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency on Friday, a spokesman for North Korea’s Foreign Ministry referred to the failure of the second summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump, in the Vietnamese capital in February, and said that failure was the result of America’s “arbitrary and dishonest position.”

Trump claimed he had “walked away” from the summit in Hanoi because Kim had insisted on the removal of all sanctions on North Korea at once. But Pyongyang rejected that account, stressing that it had only asked for a partial lifting of the bans in return for a set of steps that it was willing to take.

The unnamed North Korean spokesman said that the US had insisted on “a method which is totally impossible to fulfill.”

“Unless the United States puts aside the current method of calculation and comes forward with a new method of calculation, the DPRK-US dialog will never be resumed, and by extension, the prospect for resolving the nuclear issue will be much gloomy,” the North Korean official said.

The official said his country would adopt a stronger approach if the US aggravated its hostilities. “The United States would not be able to move us even an inch with the current method it has in mind, and if its mistrust and hostile acts toward North Korea grow, the fiercer our reaction will be.”

On May 9, the US said it had seized a North Korean cargo ship for allegedly violating sanctions on Pyongyang, taking the tensions with North Korea to a higher level. North Korea called that seizure “robbery” and demanded that the ship be immediately released.

The US and North Korea had been negotiating since last year, when a rapprochement between North and South Koreas later led to a diplomatic opening between Pyongyang and Washington.

But the talks had effectively stalled in recent months, and the Friday North Korean pronouncement made any resumption of the talks seem impossible.

Washington has imposed rounds of unilateral sanctions and spearheaded multilateral ones against Pyongyang since 2006 over its nuclear and missile programs. The bans have mostly targeted Pyongyang’s exports, including coal, iron, lead, textiles, and seafood, while also hindering the imports of crude oil and refined petroleum products.

Soon after the diplomatic engagement with the South, North Korea took a number of unilateral goodwill measures, including suspending all nuclear and missile testing.

None of those measures were reciprocated by America.

Bomb in Afghan mosque kills senior cleric during Friday prayers

Bomb in Afghan mosque kills senior cleric during Friday prayers
A bomb exploded in a mosque in the Afghan capital, Kabul, during Friday prayers, officials said, killing three people including a senior preacher and wounding at least 20 men who had gathered for worship.

The preacher, Samiullah Raihan, was a supporter of the Western-backed Afghan government which Taliban militants are trying to bring down. He was also a member of the National Ulema Council, Afghanistan’s top Muslim clerical body.

Firdaws Faramarz, a police spokesman, said explosives were apparently placed near the altar of the Al-Taqwa mosque, a place used by the mosque leader to initiate the prayers.

The neighborhood where the bombing took place is dominated by Sunni Muslims. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but the Taliban and Islamic State fighters regularly stage attacks in the capital.

The explosion hit at a time when dozens of men had gathered for prayers. The death toll could rise, said a second official.

Trump rejects additional troop deployment to MidEast, says there is ‘no need’

US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump has rejected any "need" for additional troop deployments in the Middle East after reports claimed the Pentagon was considering sending up to 10,000 troops to the region.

“I don’t think we’re going to need them. I really don’t,” Trump told reporters on Thursday. “I would certainly send troops if we need them,” he added.

Trump made the comments shortly after the Associated Press reported that the Pentagon would present plans to the White House on Thursday to send up to 10,000 troops, quoting unnamed US officials.

Earlier on Thursday, Reuters also published a similar report, putting the probable deployment number at 5,000.

The reports presented the measures as seeking to “beef up defenses against Iran amid heightened tensions in the region”.

The two reports were, however, specifically rejected by acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan earlier on Thursday.

"I got up this morning and read that we were sending 10,000 troops to the Middle East, and then I read more recently that there was 5,0000," Shanahan said.

"There is no 10,000 and there is no 5,000, and that's not accurate,” he added.

The rumors surrounding a probable US troop deployment to the Middle East came after the US deployed an aircraft carrier strike group and a bomber task force in the Persian Gulf earlier this month to counter a “threat” from Tehran.

Last week, the New York Times reported that Trump’s team had gone as far as drawing up plans for a possible military strike against Iran that could involve sending 120,000 soldiers to the Middle East.

Similar to what happened on Thursday, however, the report was rejected shortly afterwards by the US president.

"I think it's fake news, OK? Now, would I do that? Absolutely. But we have not planned for that. Hopefully we're not going to have to plan for that,” Trump said.

Last Friday, media outlets reported that Trump had ordered his administration to avoid a military confrontation with Iran.

There are also reports of the Trump administration having failed to convince US lawmakers of the alleged Iranian “threat” after presenting a congressional committee with related “intelligence” last week.

Many lawmakers have said the administration is “inflating threats and bending intelligence” to push for war against the country.

On Thursday, the US State Department failed to meet a congressional deadline explaining about possible biased statements against Iran in an annual arms controls report.

The three Democratic chairmen of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs, Armed Services and Intelligence committees had asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week to provide explanations after concerns emerged that the report had made the assessments in an attempt to lay the groundwork for a probable war.

Various reports in the past months have also suggested that Trump has been specifically at odds with his National Security Adviser John Bolton and Pompeo over their push for military confrontation with Tehran.

Oman says it is trying to reduce US-Iran tensions

Oman says it is trying to reduce US-Iran tensions
Oman said on Friday it was trying to reduce spiralling tensions between the United States and Iran as the Pentagon confirmed it was considering deploying more troops to the region.

The small but strategic sultanate, which lies just across the Strait of Hormuz from Iran at the entrance to the Gulf, has maintained good relations with Tehran through successive regional crises.

Those relations have at times allowed it to play an important mediating role, including with the US. “We and other parties seek to calm tensions between Washington and Tehran,” state minister for foreign affairs Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah said in a statement.

“A war could harm the whole world, and both the American and Iranian sides are 'aware of the dangers'.”

Oman played a crucial role in bringing US and Iranian negotiators together for the preliminary talks that ultimately led to a landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and major powers, including the US.

The current crisis began when President Donald Trump abandoned the deal in May last year and gradually reimposed crippling sanctions that have left Iran's economy reeling.

Washington has since further increased the pressure on Iran with the deployment of an aircraft carrier task force as well as B-52 bombers, an amphibious assault ship and a missile defence battery to the Gulf.

The movements have come in response to what the US says are intelligence warnings of a heightened threat to its interests or allies in the Middle East from Iran.

But they have raised concerns, even among US allies, that the brinksmanship with Tehran could lead to a dangerous miscalculation.

On Tuesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi announced that he intended to send delegations to the US and Iran “very soon” in an attempt to ease tensions between the two countries, which are both important partners for Baghdad

Tearful May resigns, paving way for Brexit confrontation with EU

Tearful May
Fighting back tears, Theresa May said on Friday she would quit, setting up a contest that will install a new British prime minister who could pursue a cleaner break with the European Union.

May’s departure deepens the Brexit crisis as a new leader, who should be in place by the end of July, is likely to want a more decisive split, raising the chances of a confrontation with the EU and potentially a snap parliamentary election.

Her voice cracking with emotion, May, who endured crises and humiliation in her failed effort to find a compromise Brexit deal that parliament could ratify, said she would resign on Friday, June 7 with a leadership contest beginning the following week.

“I will shortly leave the job that has been the honour of my life to hold,” May said outside her Downing Street official residence with her husband, Philip, looking on. “The second female prime minister, but certainly not the last.

“I do so with no ill will but with enormous and enduring gratitude to have had the opportunity to serve the country I love,” said the usually reserved May as she fought back tears.

May, once a reluctant supporter of EU membership who won the top job in the turmoil that followed the 2016 Brexit referendum, steps down with her central pledge - to lead the United Kingdom out of the bloc and heal its divisions - unfulfilled.

“It is, and will always remain, a matter of deep regret to me that I have not been able to deliver Brexit,” May said, adding that her successor would have to find a consensus to honour the 2016 referendum result.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, said the new prime minister must hold an election to “let the people decide our country’s future”.

May bequeaths a deeply divided country and a political elite that is deadlocked over how, when or whether to leave the EU. The latest deadline for Britain’s departure is Oct. 31.

Most of the leading contenders to succeed May want a tougher divorce deal, although the EU has said it will not renegotiate the Withdrawal Agreement it sealed with Britain in November.

Spain said it now seemed almost impossible to avoid a so-called hard Brexit, or clean break from the EU, and the bloc signalled there would be no change on the agreement despite European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker learning of May’s resignation “without personal joy”.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney underlined the bloc’s stance that there would be no better Brexit deal.

“This idea that a new prime minister will be a tougher negotiator and will put it up to the EU and get a much better deal for Britain? That’s not how the EU works,” Coveney told Ireland’s Newstalk radio station.

Sterling swung back and forth on May’s resignation, trading slightly higher on the day, and British government bond yields edged off near-two-year lows struck first thing on Friday. Boris Johnson, the face of the official Brexit campaign in 2016, is the favourite to succeed May and he thanked her for her “stoical service”. Betting markets put a 40% implied probability on Johnson winning the top job.

Others tipped are Dominic Raab, a Brexit supporter and former Brexit secretary, with a 14% implied probability on his chances. Environment Secretary Michael Gove, former House of Commons leader Andrea Leadsom and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt each have a 7% probability, according to betting markets.

Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt and International Development Secretary Rory Stewart each have a 4% chance of the top job while Home Secretary Sajid Javid has a 3% chance.

For many Conservative lawmakers, speed is of the essence to install a new leader to try to break the Brexit impasse.

The governing party said it would move quickly to try to end the leadership contest before parliament breaks for a summer holiday, a so-called recess which usually falls in late July.

“The fight for the heart and soul of the Conservative Party officially starts now,” said Andrew Bridgen, a pro-Brexit lawmaker. “We need a new PM as soon as possible and who that is will decide the future of our democracy, our country and the Conservative Party.”
