Turkey welcomes UNSC session on Kashmir Issue

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan
Turkey has welcomed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session on Kashmir dispute and urged the UN to play a “more” active role in resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute within the framework of the UN resolutions.

In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry welcomed the consultations held by the UN Security Council on Friday on the recent developments in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir.

The ministry also reiterated its wish that the dispute be resolved through dialogue between the parties concerned. It also called for calm and avoiding unilateral steps that would escalate tension.

Earlier, the UNSC met behind the closed doors in over five decades to discuss the Kashmir issue upon the request of Pakistan and China.

The meeting was convened following the Indian government’s recent decision to revoke the special status of occupied Kashmir.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dr Maleeha Lodhi had said that the Security Council’s emergency meeting has nullified Indian claims that Kashmir is their internal matter.

Kashmir region has been facing a communication blockade since Aug. 5, when India scrapped special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

For the first time, landline services were also snapped across the region, thus making it impossible for people to communicate with the outside world.

Formation of ‘Kashmir cell’ in FO, Pak Army ready to defend if India resorts to any misadventure

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi addressing a joint press conference with DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Saturday warned that Pakistan army and the nation are ready to defend if India resorts to any misadventure in an attempt to divert the world's attention from the ongoing lockdown in occupied Kashmir.

Addressing a joint press conference with Director General Inter-Services Public Relations Major General Asif Ghafoor following a meeting of the country's top brass on the situation in occupied Kashmir, Qureshi said it was possible India could resort to a misadventure to create diversion.

"India can [resort to] misadventure in its attempt to divert the world's attention away from its actions in occupied Kashmir. The Pakistan army and the nation are ready to defend if India attempts any misadventure," he said.

Sharing details from the special committee meeting held prior to the media talk, which was attended by representatives from various institutions, Qureshi said a special cell on Kashmir would be constituted at the Pakistan Foreign Office, which would be responsible for devising a future course of action on the prevailing situation in occupied Kashmir, subject to his approval.

A Kashmir desk would also be established in all Pakistani embassies around the world in light of the ongoing crisis, the foreign minister announced.

He lauded the historic United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting held on Friday, which saw the council members urge the parties involved to refrain from any unilateral action that may aggravate the situation.

"We achieved a [milestone] yesterday, which shocked India. The Kashmir issue was raised at a platform which is responsible for resolving the dispute," he said.

Qureshi said the UNSC session was discussed at length during today's meeting, along with the future plan of action that Pakistan would adopt in light of the meeting.

"All the participants [of today's meeting] agreed that Modi has murdered Nehru’s Hindustan. Today, it is not Nehru’s Hindustan. It is Modi’s Hindustan," the minister said.

Lauding the unbroken spirit of the people of Indian-occupied Kashmir, Qureshi noted that despite the curfew, Kashmiris came out of their houses to offer Friday prayers. "It was a glimpse into their emotions, into what it would be like after the curfew lifts," he said.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Sardar Masood Khan, along with various other federal ministers and special advisers to the prime minister, attended the meeting.

DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor

DG ISPR Major General Asif Ghafoor said the country’s armed forces are fully prepared to respond to any Indian aggression.

“Pakistan armed forces are ready. Pakistan is fully capable of giving a befitting response to India if India tries any misadventure,” the military’s media spokesperson said during the press conference.

“The armed forces are ready for any action, for any perpetual threat. Whatever is required to be done will be done,” he said, adding that Pakistan could not afford any event that harmed its narrative on Kashmir.

Responding to a question, Major General Ghafoor said, “Kashmir is a nuclear flash point and the world needs to look into the Indian defence minister's remarks about use of nuclear weapons. Responsible states do not talk the way Rajnath Singh did.”

The DG ISPR also thanked social media activists in fighting Indian propaganda over the Kashmir conflict.

The UNSC met behind closed doors at the request of China and Pakistan to discuss the Indian government's recent decision to revoke the special status of occupied Kashmir.

The council took up the issue of the critical situation in occupied Kashmir after more than 50 years since it was last discussed on the platform, effectively rejecting India's stance that occupied Kashmir was an internal issue and not an internationally recognised dispute.

Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi and China's ambassador to the United Nations Zhang
Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Maleeha Lodhi welcomed the UNSC meeting on the situation in Occupied Kashmir on Friday, calling it a testimony to the fact that Kashmir is an internationally recognised dispute.

Members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) met for the first time in over five decades to discuss the critical situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir, urging parties to the dispute to refrain from taking any unilateral action.

The UNSC met behind closed doors at the request of China to discuss the Indian government's recent decision to revoke the special status of Occupied Kashmir.

Lodhi said Pakistan was "grateful to China for calling this meeting".

"The voice of the Kashmiri people have been heard today. The fact that this meeting took place is testimony to the fact that this is an internationally recognised dispute. This meeting has reaffirmed the validity of the UNSC resolutions on the status of Jammu and Kashmir," Pakistan's Permanent Representative Maleeha Lodhi told reporters after the meeting.

"This meeting nullifies that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter for India."

She said the Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had conveyed that this was "the first step that we (Pakistan) have taken on behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir…the first but not the last step".

The council had taken up the issue of the situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir after more than 50 years since it was last discussed on the platform, effectively rejecting India's stance that Occupied Kashmir was an internal issue and not an internationally recognised dispute.

China's ambassador to the United Nations

Also speaking after the meeting, China's ambassador to the United Nations said members of the Security Council had expressed serious concern over Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, where the situation is "already very tense and very dangerous."

"The Security Council has just held an informal consultation and listened very carefully to the briefings and reports from the secretariat including the briefing from the military observer group on the ground that helped us understand the situation better. The Secretary General also issued a statement a few days ago," said Zhang.

"Members have expressed that there are serious concerns concerning the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. They are also concerned about the human rights situation there and it is the general view of the members that parties concerned should refrain from taking any unilateral action which might further aggravate tensions."

"China holds the view that the issue of Jammu Kashmir is an issue left from history between India and Pakistan. According to UNSC resolutions, the status of Kashmir is undecided and it is an internationally recognized dispute. The Kashmir issue should be resolved properly through peaceful means in accordance with the UN charter, the relevant SC resolutions and bilateral agreements. This represents the international community's consensus," said China's ambassador to the UN.

"It is obvious that the constitutional amendment by India has changed the status quo in Kashmir, causing tension in the region. China is deeply concerned about the current situation and opposes any unilateral action that complicates the situation," he added.

Money laundering case: Asif Zardari shifted to Adiala Jail on three-day judicial remand

Former president Asif Ali Zardari
Former president Asif Ali Zardari on Friday was shifted to Adiala Jail on a three-day judicial remand in connection with the long-running mega money laundering case.

Asif  Zardari was produced before Judge Muhammad Bashir in an accountability court by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) personnel earlier today.

The NAB prosecutor asked the court to extend Zardari’s remand in light of the recent developments in the case.

Zardari’s counsel, Sardar Latif Khosa responded that his client had already said that he be given a 90-day remand at once. “NAB officials ask for a four-day remand then again ask for a new remand. These repeated appearances are only causing losses to the national treasure,” the counsel said.

Zardari questioned on the rostrum why he wasn’t allowed to meet his daughter Aseefa Bhutto Zardari despite the court’s permission. The court then remarked that the PPP co-chairman be allowed to meet his daughter.

Khosa also filed a plea in the court asking that Zardari be provided with A-class facilities in prison, including medical facilities and the permission to meet his family.

The accountability court then summoned a reply from NAB regarding the request and issued orders to shift Zardari to Adiala Jail on judicial remand.

Zardari’s sister Faryal Talpur was also shifted to Adiala Jail last Sunday, after she was arrested earlier this year in connection with the money laundering and fake accounts case.

Modi led India’s fascist tactics will fail to smother Kashmir’s freedom struggle: PM Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said the Narendra Modi-led India’s fascist tactics in occupied Kashmir will “fail miserably” to smother the Kashmiri freedom struggle.

In a series of tweets, the premier warned Modi that a nation that does not fear death cannot be stopped from achieving its goal.

“The fascist, Hindu Supremacist Modi Govt should know that while armies, militants & terrorists can be defeated by superior forces; history tells us that when a nation unites in a freedom struggle & does not fear death, no force can stop it from achieving its goal,” the prime minister wrote.

“That is why the Hindutva exclusivist creed of the Modi-led Govt with its fascist tactics in IOK will fail miserably in its attempt to smother the Kashmiri liberation struggle,” he added.

Prime Minister Imran, who has likened Modi's fascism to the Nazi era, earlier warned the international community that its silence on the ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Indian-occupied Kashmir would lead to severe repercussions in the Muslim world.

Indian authorities have been maintaining a strict clampdown in occupied Kashmir since August 5, after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Hindu nationalist government abolished the Indian constitution's Article 370, which granted special status to the occupied valley.

Tensions have mounted in the disputed region, with an unprecedented number of Indian troops deployed and television, telephone and internet links suspended. The occupied territory remains cut off from the external world due to the communication blackout.

PM Imran to celebrate Independence day in Kashmir

PM Imran to celebrate Independence day in Kashmir
Prime Minister Imran Khan will visit Muzaffarabad on Wednesday where he will address the Azad Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly.

According to details from the Prime Minister's Office, PM Imran Khan will express solidarity with Kashmiris during his address to the AJK legislative assembly.

The federal government has decided to observe Independence Day, on 14 August, in solidarity with the brave Kashmiris and their just struggle for their right of self-determination.

15th August will be observed as Black Day across Pakistan.
Last week, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Hindu nationalist government abolished the Indian constitution's Article 370, which granted special status to occupied Kashmir, as tensions mounted in the disputed valley with unprecedented numbers of Indian troops deployed in the region. The move by Narendra Modi's government rescinded years of autonomy and gave full control of the disputed region to New Delhi.

Occupied Kashmir has since faced strict curfew and an unprecedented security lockdown as a complete communications blackout continued for the ninth day on Tuesday.

Officials eased restrictions earlier Sunday but imposed them again on Monday afternoon amid a tense atmosphere in the main city of Srinagar. Indian troops clamped tight restrictions on mosques across the valley for Eid-ul-Azha, fearing anti-government protests over the stripping of the region's autonomy.

Internet and phone communications have been cut and tens of thousands of troop reinforcements have flooded Srinagar and other towns and villages, with residents confined to their houses due to the stringent restrictions.

Monday, which marked the first day of Eid-ul-Azha, saw people not being able to offer Eid prayers or slaughter sacrificial animals.
