Heavy rain in India trips floods, landslides; at least 125 dead

Heavy rain in India trips floods, landslides; at least 125 dead
Rescue teams in India struggled through thick sludge and debris on Saturday to reach dozens of submerged homes as the death toll from landslides and accidents caused by torrential monsoon rain rose to 125.

Maharashtra state is being hit by the heaviest rain in July in four decades, experts say. Downpours lasting several days have severely affected the lives of hundreds of thousands, while major rivers are in danger of bursting their banks.

In Taliye, about 180 km (110 miles) southeast of the financial capital of Mumbai, the death toll rose to 42 with the recovery of four more bodies after landslides flattened most homes in the village, a senior Maharashtra government official said.
About 40 people are still trapped. The possibility of rescuing them alive is thin as they've been trapped in mud for more than 36 hours," said the official, who declined to be identified as he is not authorised to talk to the media.

Harsh weather has hit several parts of the world in recent weeks, with floods in China and Western Europe and heat waves in North America, raising new fears about the impact of climate change.

Parts of India's west coast have received up to 594 mm (23 inches) of rain, forcing authorities to move people out of vulnerable areas as they released water from dams about to overflow. The hill station of Mahabaleshwar recorded its highest ever rainfall - 60 cm in 24 hours.

Rescuers were searching for victims of landslides in four other places in the state, the official said.

"Around 90,000 people were rescued from flood affected areas," the Maharashtra government said in a statement, as authorities released water from overflowing dams.

Thousands of trucks were stuck for more than 24 hours on a highway linking Mumbai with the southern technology hub of Bengaluru, with the road submerged in some places.

PM Imran Khan promises referendum for Kashmir,s independence

pm imran khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday promised the people of Kashmir that his government will hold a referendum in which they can choose to join Pakistan or become an independent state if they wish.

Addressed an election campaign rally in Tarar Khal, he rubbished talk of him "wishing to turn Azad Jammu and Kashmir into a new province of Pakistan".

"I do not know where all this talk has sprung from," he said, dismissing any notion of such an idea.

"But what I want to make clear now, is that in 1948, there were two United Nations Security Council resolutions which granted the people of Kashmir the right to decide their own future. According to the UN resolutions, the people had to decide whether they want to join Hindustan or Pakistan.

"I want to clarify to all of you today. InshaAllah, a day will come, when all the sacrifices made by the people of Kashmir, will not be wasted. God will grant you that right. There will be a referendum, InshaAllah.

He expressed the confidence that the people on that day will choose to live with Pakistan.

The premier went on to state that after the UN mandated referendum, his government will hold another referendum, where the people of Kashmir will be given the choice to either live with Pakistan or become an independent state.

PM Imran Khan said the freedom struggle of Kashmiris pre-dates partition and began more than a 100 years ago, when the people stood up time and again against the Dogra government.

The Dogra family was a dynasty of Hindu Rajputs who ruled Jammu & Kashmir from 1846 to 1947.

Moving on to the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election, due on Sunday, the prime minister said that there is already talk that "there will be rigging".

He said when he used to play cricket, it was standard practice for countries to have their own umpires, and teams that were fearful of losing against a powerful team, would preemptively raise a hue and cry about losing the match due to the other country's umpire officiating.

"The Noon League, which I truly believe has never done a single thing with honesty, have begun talk of rigging already.

"The government is yours, the staff is yours, the Election Commission is comprised of people of your own choosing, and it is we who will do elections?" he asked the party.

Sharing an anecdote from when he used to play cricket at Lahore's Gymkhana Club, he said that one day he and his friends noticed a "plump man, seemingly very enthused about playing cricket" visit the club.

"That man was Nawaz Sharif," the prime minister said.

PM Imran Khan said "everything he will go on to say from that point is true", adding that people who used to play at the club in those days, will back him.

The premier said that Nawaz's cricket "was about as good as his politics".

"But then he became a finance minister. When he would come to play a match, he would bring his own umpires to the ground: one a deputy commissioner, one a commissioner. Whenever he was out, they would declare it as a no ball. Since then, the Noon League has fallen into this bad habit. For them, good umpiring is only when it is their own man," PM Imran Khan said.

The premier said that in 200 years of Test Cricket history, it was Pakistan that brought neutral umpires and the man who was captain at the time "is standing right before you all". He said at a time when West Indies was the most robust team in cricket, when even losing against them gracefully was a tall order, Pakistan brought neutral umpires to the match, back in 1986.

"And today, there are neutral umpires the world over."

The prime minister said that the government had been asking the Opposition for the past year to come work with the government on electoral reforms "but no one ever comes".

"We recommended electronic voting machines. What happens is that right after the election ends, the result is out with the press of a button.

"You don't have to worry about going through boxes of votes. Neither is there any fear of the boxes being stolen, nor of double-stamping. This is the marvel of technology. The result is instantaneous," the premier said.

He said the Opposition "refused to listen and is now crying rigging".

PM Imran Khan said that one can rest assured that Pakistan "will become a great nation".

He said that over his half-an-hour ride to the rally venue he was surrounded by immense beauty and it made him realise that if even a little bit of effort is put, Pakistan can earn big from tourism.

The prime minister regretted the effects of the war on terror on Pakistan and said it was "this region that suffered the most".

He said after his government came into power, in 2013 and 2018, according to a UN report, poverty registered a significant decline in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The premier said that the province to spend the most on human development was KP. In 2013, there was a coalition government and then in 2018, "the province that never votes for a party twice, had PTI win with a two-thirds majority".

"So my first and foremost efforts will be geared at reducing poverty in Azad Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

He cited the Ehsaas programme, in which by December, 40% of the underprivileged will have access to subsidised food.

Also citing the Kamiyab Pakistan programme, he said one person of every family will receive technical education and the family will have health insurance worth Rs1 million. In addition, one person will be granted an interest-free loan to start a business.

"We have set aside Rs500bn for this programme," he said.

The premier asked whether in the last 10 years, anyone had fought as hard for Kashmir on international forums. "You can assess the two governments over the last 10 years and just the three years we have been in government."

"Did anyone go to the United Nations? Did anyone give an interview abroad?

"What to say of all these things, Narendra Modi is instead being invited to weddings. He is bad-mouthing Pakistan, blinding the people of Kashmir with pellet guns and torturing them. And he is being invited to weddings after much begging and pleading," the premier said.

Referring to a book by Barkha Dutt, he said that it states that Nawaz Sharif "held secret meetings with Modi".

"He held a secret meeting because he was afraid of the Pakistan Army. Then, he goes to India but does not meet Hurriyat leaders out of fear of angering Modi.

"These leaders of yours. Ask them. What did they do in the five years they has been in power here?" he said, as he continued to criticise the PML-N.

He did not spare the mention of PPP either.

"And that Zardari. He would think of Kashmir if he had time to spare from counting his money," the premier said.

PM Imran Khan promised he would continue to raise his voice for the people of Kashmir. "Pakistan will always remain by your side," he added.

"I wish to salute Ali Geelani who is in jail in occupied Kashmir, and his struggle. And Yasin Malik," the prime minister said.

He said when there was an earthquake 16 years ago in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Yasin Malik and he visited the affected areas here. "He had brought money over with him from Kashmir and he distributed it among people here. I will never forget that."

"Continue to exercise patience, Yasin Malik. InshaAllah, good times will come soon. The entire nation of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir are with you and praying for you and the people of Kashmir."

"It is our belief. Kashmir will get this right, to decide its own future," he reiterated, as he concluded his address.

Besides this archived chats will now stay archived and muted when new messages arrive and the changes could be made after the following process, Settings > Chats > Keep Chats Archived.

However, according to WhatsApp, these new features are being gradually released to users, so not everyone will get them right after installing the update.

Pakistan has potential to win upcoming T20 World Cup: Shoaib Akhtar

shoaib akhtar
Former speedster Shoaib Akhtar feels Pakistan has the potential to win the upcoming T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking to the Indian channel Sports Tak, Akhtar said Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and West Indies will dominate in UAE conditions in T20 World Cup.

“You can’t rule out Pakistan from winning this year’s T20 World Cup despite they lost T20I series against England. Note it, Pakistan and India will meet in mega event’s final in the UAE,” he believes.

“See, UAE is the backyard for Pakistan as they have played a lot of cricket here. The tracks in UAE have a different kind of spin, English batters struggle there, New Zealanders will be trapped easily there. So, it will be a chance for Pakistan, India, Afghanistan (if they show maturity), and West Indies to qualify for the knock-out stage of the T20 World Cup,” he added.

It must be noted here that India and Pakistan are placed in Group 2 of the T20 World Cup alongside New Zealand, Afghanistan, and two qualifying teams. The event is all set to start on October 17 in UAE and Oman.

WHO reassures pharma companies on Covid vaccines patent

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom
The World Health Organization on Wednesday sought to reassure pharmaceutical companies that a proposal to suspend patent rights on Covid-19 vaccines was not a bid to "snatch" their intellectual property rights.

With more than four million dead and the toll likely to reach much higher, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said vaccine makers should be offered incentives in return for temporarily waiving their rights.

"Of course, we can´t snatch your property," Tedros said via video link from Tokyo at the start of a meeting with the World Trade Organization, pharma companies and global financial institutions.

"With so many lives on the line, profits and patents must come second," he said, without giving any details on the proposed financial incentives.

Waiving intellectual property rights would help meet the 11 billion doses of vaccine the WHO says are needed to protect 70 percent of people in every country by mid-2022.

This is the second meeting in Geneva to try to bridge differences on how to increase supply of jabs and cut the vaccine inequity that sees rich countries eyeing booster shots while health workers in poor countries go without.

Of the 1.1 billion doses produced globally in June, "only 1.4 percent went to Africans, who account for 17 percent of the global population", WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweal said in her opening speech.

"Only 0.24 percent went to people in low-income countries. And both shares declined even further in the first half of July," she said.

In addition to the suspension of patents, barriers to the trade in vaccine ingredients must be removed and laboratories agree to transfer their technology, Tedros said.

US extends travel curbs at Canada, Mexico land borders through August 21

US extends travel curbs at Canada, Mexico land borders through August 21
The U.S. government has extended the closure of land borders with Canada and Mexico to non-essential travel such as tourism through August 21 even as officials debate whether to require visitors to have received a COVID-19 vaccine.

The latest 30-day extension by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) came after Canada said on Monday it would start allowing in fully vaccinated U.S. visitors on Aug. 9 for non-essential travel after the COVID-19 pandemic forced a 16-month ban that many businesses have called crippling.

"We rely on the guidance of our health and medical experts, not on the actions of other countries," White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, declining to offer any timetable for when the administration might ease travel restrictions that bar much of the world from the United States.

One difficult question for President Joe Biden's administration is whether to follow Canada's lead and require all visitors to be vaccinated for COVID-19 before entering the United States, sources briefed on the matter told Reuters.

The White House plans a new round of high-level meetings this week to discuss the travel restrictions and the potential of mandating COVID-19 vaccines for visitors, but no decisions have been made, the sources said.

The review comes amid increasing concern among U.S. officials about the Delta variant. U.S. health officials have reported sizable increases in COVID-19 cases and deaths, with outbreaks occurring in parts of the country with low vaccination rates.

The White House last month launched interagency working groups with the European Union, Britain, Canada and Mexico to look at how eventually to lift travel and border restrictions.

Asked on Friday about when the United States would lift European travel restrictions, Biden said he would "be able to answer that question to you within the next several days — what is likely to happen."

Businesses in Canada and the United States, particularly the travel and airline industries, have pushed for an end to restrictions on non-essential travel between the two countries, which were imposed in March 2020, early in the pandemic.

Since then, the land border has remained closed to all non-essential travel. The United States has allowed Canadians to fly in, although they must first receive a negative COVID-19 test, as do nearly all U.S.-bound international air travelers. Canada has not allowed Americans to do the same.

Travelers crossing U.S. land borders on essential business do not need negative COVID-19 tests.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce, a business group, criticized the latest U.S. extension. The chamber's chief executive, Perrin Beatty, said the U.S. move "flies in the face of both science and the most recent public health data."

"It's hard to see how allowing fully vaccinated Canadians to enter the U.S. poses a public health threat when travel within the U.S. is unrestricted," Beatty added.

The United States has continued to extend the restrictions on Canada and Mexico on a monthly basis since March 2020.

Airlines and others have urged Biden's administration to lift restrictions covering most non-U.S. citizens who have recently been in Britain, the 26 nations in Europe without border controls as well as Ireland, China, India, South Africa, Iran and Brazil.

The U.S. land border restrictions do not bar U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents returning to the United States. As in prior extensions, DHS said it could still seek to amend or rescind the restrictions before Aug. 21.

The program, which applies to all enterprises regardless of their size, income, and commercial activities, allows non-Saudis who are holders of premium residency visas to take advantage of the opportunity to correct the status of their establishments if they do not meet the required conditions.
The concessions include a reduction in the requirement for establishments to achieve annual revenues from SR40 to SR10 million and increasing the deadline for achieving the capital required for restricted activities from three to five years.

Enterprises will also be exempted from penalties prescribed in the law and the consequences from other penalties, and exemption from paying income tax retroactively, in order to ensure the regular practice of economic activities.

Corrective steps need to be carried out using multiple options on the website of the Ministry of Commerce.

Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih has granted approval for the application of these requirements effective from last Sunday by issuing investment licenses to establishments registered in the name of non-Saudis if there is an agreement between Saudis and non-Saudis as partners.

Jaishankar's statement on FATF exposes 'true colours' of India: Pakistan

Jaishankar's statement on FATF exposes 'true colours' of India: Pakistan
The Foreign Office (FO) on Monday slammed Indian minister’s statement, admitting that it played role in keeping Pakistan on the grey list of Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

“Indian statement not only exposes its true colors but also vindicates Pakistan’s longstanding stance on India’s negative role in FATF,” said FO Spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri after Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar admitted that Pakistan is on the FATF grey list because of the "efforts of Narendra Modi's government.".

The spokesperson reminded that Islamabad has always been highlighting India’s role to the international community in the politicisation of the FATF and undermining its processes. It added that the recent statement by the Indian foreign minister was “just a further corroboration of its continued efforts to use an important technical forum for its narrow political designs against Pakistan”.

“While Pakistan has been sincerely and constructively engaged with FATF during the implementation of the action plan, India has left no stone unturned in casting doubts on Pakistan’s progress through disgraceful means,” said the FO spokesperson.

The statement said that Islamabad has been “exposing India’s duplicitous role to the international community in the past” and vowed that it will also bring the “recent confession by India” to the FATF’s notice.

“Pakistan is also considering approaching FATF president for an appropriate action in this matter. Following the recent confession by Indian Government, India’s credentials for assessing Pakistan in FATF as co-chair of the Joint Group or for that matter any other country are subject to questions, which we urge FATF to look into,” said Chaudhri.

The FO spokesperson reiterated that Pakistan’s progress in AML/CFT domain has been “demonstrated through concrete, tangible and verifiable actions” which was also “openly acknowledged” by FATF.

“We are resolved to sustain this momentum and trajectory with the support and cooperation of our international partners. India’s delusions of putting pressure on Pakistan have always remained unfulfilled and would never see the light of day,” said Chaudhri. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the AML/CFT systems.

'India's statement confirms what Pakistan has been saying all along'
Federal Energy Minister Hammad Azhar tweeted that Jaishankar's statement "only confirms what Pakistan has been saying all along".
"India actively politicises & undermines the technical processes & spirit of FATF," tweeted Azhar. He added that Pakistan's "progress is nevertheless undeniable" and vowed that Islamabad "shall soon" complete both its action plans.
