China announces decrease in new cases whereas 142 more patients died

China announces decrease in new cases whereas 142 more patients died
The death toll from China’s coronavirus epidemic jumped to 1,665 on Sunday after 142 more people died, although the number of new cases dropped for a third consecutive day.

According to the national health commission, there were 2,009 new cases reported across the country — the third day of declining cases after a spike earlier in the week due to a change in the way cases were counted.

There were 1,843 fresh cases in hard-hit Hubei province, where the outbreak first emerged in December and spiralled into a nationwide epidemic.

A total of 68,500 people have now been infected, the national health commission said, with most deaths occurring in Hubei.

The number of new cases in other parts of the country has dropped for twelve straight days.

The central province added more than 14,000 cases in a single day this week after officials there changed their criteria for counting cases to include people clinically diagnosed through lung imaging, in addition to those with a positive lab test result.

The revision added nearly 15,000 patients to Hubei’s tally on Thursday, with the World Health Organization noting that cases going back weeks were retroactively counted.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the body has asked China for details on how diagnoses were being made.

France reported the first fatality from the new coronavirus outside Asia on Saturday, fuelling global concerns about the epidemic.

China’s central bank said Saturday that to control the outbreak spreading, used banknotes were being disinfected and stored for up to 14 days before they are put back into circulation.

FO dismisses reports of Pakistanis being deported from Saudi Arabia

Foreign office
The Foreign Office on Saturday reassured the Pakistani community that Saudi Arabia was neither holding nor deporting Pakistani expatriates across the Makkah region.

The Foreign Office in its statement urged the Pakistani community in the Kingdom to remain calm and not pay attention to a fabricated social media campaign.

“The Consulate General in Jeddah has been in contact with the relevant Saudi authorities and they have been informed that routinely illegal expatriates are apprehended and deported from all nationalities.

The exercise continues with varying intensity throughout the year”, the Foreign Office said while quoting a statement from the Consulate General.

“The assumption that it is a Pakistan specific drive is completely incorrect. Propagation of such news through the social media has created unnecessary anxiety, giving it a misleading political angle,” the statement said, adding that it was in the interest of the deep-rooted Pak-Saudi brotherly relations that such baseless and irresponsible twist was avoided at all costs.

The drive which was initiated last week has been mainly focusing on the expatriates without Iqama or expired Iqama, illegal workers, and those working not in their place of Iqama or out of the declared profession, according to the consulate.

“In this connection, around 400 Pakistanis have been brought to the Shumaisi Deportation Centre near Makkah over the last three days”, clarified the statement.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are in constant contact and the Consulate General of Pakistan is taking all possible measures, within local rules and regulations, to protect the interests of the Pakistani community.

UEFA bans Manchester City from Champions League for 2 seasons

UEFA bans Manchester City from Champions League for two seasons
UEFA has banned Manchester City from the Champions League for two seasons for "serious breaches" of financial regulations

English Premier League champion Manchester City was banned from the Champions League for two seasons by UEFA on Friday, February 15, for "serious breaches" of spending rules and failing to cooperate with investigators in a seismic ruling against one of world football's wealthiest clubs.

The team was also fined 30 million euros ($33 million) after an investigation that was sparked by leaked internal correspondence showing City overstated sponsorship revenue and masked the source of revenue from deals to tied to the Gulf nation in a bid to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

The punishment prevents City from playing in any European competition, including the Europa League, until the 2022-23 season. It could have a significant impact on the club's ability to sign players and retain manager Pep Guardiola, whose contract expires after next season.

The verdict was delivered on Friday to City following a hearing of UEFA's club financial control body on Jan. 22.

"The adjudicatory chamber, having considered all the evidence, has found that Manchester City Football Club committed serious breaches of the UEFA club licensing and financial fair play regulations by overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016," UEFA said in a statement.

"The adjudicatory chamber has also found that in breach of the regulations the club failed to cooperate in the investigation of this case."

The ban has no impact on the women's team participating in the Champions League.

City's men play Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16 this month but would not get to defend the title if they lift the European Cup for the first time.

In a statement claiming UEFA's investigation was "flawed" and "left little doubt in the result," City announced plans to appeal.

"This is a case initiated by UEFA, prosecuted by UEFA and judged by UEFA," the club said. "With this prejudicial process now over, the club will pursue an impartial judgment as quickly as possible and will therefore, in the first instance, commence proceedings with the Court of Arbitration for Sport at the earliest opportunity."

Among football leaders calling for City to be punished was the head of the Spanish league who has been critical of how "funding by state-aid distorts European competitions."

"UEFA is finally taking decisive action," La Liga President Javier Tebas said on Friday. "Enforcing the rules of financial fair play and punishing financial doping is essential for the future of football."

City could yet face additional punishment in England where its financial dealings are still being investigated by the Premier League.

The UEFA statement on Friday did not reference any specifics of the evidence that led to the punishment.

US assassination of top Iranian general, a miscalculation: Javad Zarif

Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif
Foreign Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif said that the US assassination of a top Iranian general was a miscalculation that has had the effect of bolstering support in Iraq for the removal of American troops, a longtime goal of Tehran.

The US assassinated Lieutenant General Qasem Soleimani in a January 3 drone strike as the commander of Iran's Quds Force was leaving Baghdad's Airport.

Speaking to a group of reporters on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Zarif said "the US miscalculated," noting that since the incident, thousands of Iraqis have taken to the streets to protest against the presence of foreign troops in the country.

The martyr Soleimani is much more effective than General Soleimani, as it is evident in terms of demonstrations that are taking place in Iraq against the US presence, Zarif said.

The 56th Munich Security Conference attended by leaders from 35 countries will continue until Sunday.

Witness Stephen Ruble told ABC: 'I saw a lady going about 100 mph...and she (went) airborne, and she hit the rock.'

Tish Herrera told the broadcaster: 'It was like a massive explosion, and all of the sudden everybody's up and you can see that the boulder's in the middle of the street and the whole neighborhood is out and the young woman that hit this white car she just got out of the car like nothing happened.'

‘Trump’s plan act of high treason against entire Muslim world: Top Bahraini cleric

Bahrain's most prominent cleric Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim
Bahrain's most prominent cleric Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim has severely denounced US President Donald Trump's so-called deal of the century on the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict as treason and an act of aggression against the entire Muslim world.

“The plan is an aggressive position against the whole Muslim Ummah, which the United States, Israel and those who have contributed to it are seeking to advance. This is an act of high treason,” the cleric said at a ceremony marking the ninth anniversary of Bahrain’s popular uprising against the ruling Al Khalifah regime in the Iranian city of Qom on Thursday night.

Sheikh Qassim also harshly criticized Arab states that have backed the US-crafted deal for betraying Palestinian people.

On January 28, Trump unveiled his so-called deal of the century, negotiated with Israel but without the Palestinians.

Palestinian leaders, who severed all ties with Washington in late 2017 after Trump controversially recognized Jerusalem al-Quds as the capital of the Israeli regime, immediately rejected the plan, with President Mahmoud Abbas saying it “belongs to the dustbin of history.”

Palestinian leaders say the deal is a colonial plan to unilaterally control historic Palestine in its entirety and remove Palestinians from their homeland, adding that it heavily favors Israel and would deny them a viable independent state.

The top Bahraini cleric then lauded Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution as a revolution of principles and a victory for all human beings.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is a major challenge to all arrogant powers,” he pointed out.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Sheikh Qassim described the US assassination of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), and their companions in Iraq on January 3 as an act of cowardice.

“Lt. Gen. Soleimani was fighting on the path of righteousness. Militant groups are working with arrogant powers in order to tarnish the image of Islam,” he highlighted.

In retaliation for the US airstrike that assassinated Lt. Gen. Soleimani, Abu Muhandis and their commanders and had been authorized by Trump, the IRGC on January 8 fired a number of ballistic missiles at Ain al-Asad air base in Iraq’s western province of Andar, which houses American troops.

Trump initially reported that "no Americans were harmed" but subsequent reports revealed that troops were injured in the attack, largely with concussions from the missile blasts.

On January 5, Iraqi lawmakers unanimously approved a bill demanding the withdrawal of US forces.

Later on January 9, former Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi called on the United States to dispatch a delegation to Baghdad tasked with formulating a mechanism for the move.

It's early to predict end of novel coronavirus: WHO

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
The UN health agency on Wednesday cautioned it was "way too early" to say whether COVID-19 might have peaked or when it might end, following a drop in new cases.

"I think it´s way too early to try to predict the beginning, the middle or the end of this epidemic right now," Michael Ryan, head of WHO´s health emergencies programme, told reporters.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: "The number of newly reported cases from China has stabilised in the past week but that has to be interpreted with extreme caution.

"This outbreak could go in any direction," he added.

Tedros also praised Cambodia for agreeing to take in the Westerdam, a US cruise ship that has been rejected at several Asian ports over coronavirus fears.

"This is an example of the international solidarity we have consistently been calling for," he said.

"Outbreaks can bring out the best and worst in people. Stigmatising individuals or entire nations does nothing but harm the response.

"Instead of directing all our energy against the outbreak, stigma diverts our attention and turns people against each other," he added.

BMW wants to reduce CO2 emission of its cars in Europe by 20%

Germany's BMW
Germany's BMW wants to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by its cars in Europe by 20% in 2020, the company's chief executive said Wednesday.

The pledge comes as new European Union regulations bite this year, requiring car-makers to sharply reduce fleet-wide emissions on pain of massive fines.

"We will achieve an improvement of 20% in Europe this year alone" compared with 2019, CEO Oliver Zipse said during a speech in western German city Bochum.

Manufacturers and experts agree that sales of battery-electric and hybrid cars must rise massively if companies are to squeeze CO2 output below the threshold of 95 grammes per kilometre on average.

In 2018, new BMWs sold averaged 128 grammes per kilometre.

The firm only forecast a "slight decrease" last year and has not yet published final figures for 2019.

Slightly more generous limits for heavier cars could work in favour of the car-maker, which tends to offer larger vehicles.

Ola Kallenius, chief executive of Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler, said Tuesday the group's adjusted per-kilometre CO2 target was slightly "north of 100 grammes".

But the longtime BMW rival is "not guaranteed" to meet even that laxer limit this year or next, he added.

By contrast, Zipse said "it's clear for the BMW group that we will achieve our goals."

One-third of the carbon reductions would come from less-polluting combustion engines, and two-thirds from electric-powered vehicles, he added.

Zipse — who took over BMW from Harald Krueger in July — aims to lift EU electric and hybrid sales from 8.6% in 2019 to 25% next year, one-third in 2025, and 50% in 2030.

Like other German manufacturers, the Munich-based company plans a slew of such models in the coming years.

But car companies must battle high upfront research and development costs at the same time as a wider economic slowdown, with many resorting to job cuts to slash costs.

Rose McGowan blasts Natalie Portman Oscars cape, calls her a 'fraud'

Rose McGowan blasts Natalie Portman Oscars cape, calls her a 'fraud'
US actress and #MeToo activist Rose McGowan has dismissed as a "fraud" Natalie Portman's Oscar dress embroidered with the names of female filmmakers overlooked for best director nominations.

In a post on Facebook, the actress said she found Portman's red carpet Oscar protest "deeply offensive to those of us who actually do the work."

"I'm not writing this out of bitterness," she added. "I am writing this out of disgust."

McGowan said that while the black Dior cape stitched with the names of the snubbed directors got "rave reviews from the mainstream media" it was nothing more than "an actress acting the part of someone who cares."

"Natalie, you have worked with two female directors in your very long career — one of them was you," McGowan wrote. "You have a production company that has hired exactly one female director — you."

In a statement to AFP, Portman agreed with McGowan that she didn't deserve to be called brave.

"I agree with Ms McGowan that it is inaccurate to call me 'brave' for wearing a garment with women's names on it," Portman said. "Brave is a term I more strongly associate with actions like those of the women who have been testifying against Harvey Weinstein the last few weeks, under incredible pressure," she added in a reference to the disgraced Hollywood mogul on trial in New York charged with predatory sexual assault.

She also acknowledged that she hasn' worked with as many female directors as she would have liked and pointed out the challenges films directed by women and minorities were up against.

McGowan is among the many women who have accused Weinstein of sexual assault.

McGowan said in her post that while Portman and other actresses have spoken out against the underrepresentation of women in the movie industry, they did little to effect change.

"Until you and your fellow actresses get real, do us all a favor and hang up your embroidered activist cloak, it doesn't hang right," she said.

PTI, MQM-P reconcile after Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui meets PM Imran

PTI, MQM-P reconcile after Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui meets PM Imran
The ruling PTI and its key ally in Sindh, MQM-P, have reconciled after the latter's convener, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, met Prime Minister Imran Khan here in the federal capital.

The two, according to sources, had discussed matters related to Siddiqui’s ministry during the meeting.

Sources had earlier conformed that the MQM-P leader had taken up charge of the Ministry of Information Technology and Communication; however, the Karachi-based party refuted the report.

On January 12, the MQM-P had given the federal government a jolt as Siddiqui, then-minister for information technology, announced his decision to leave the federal cabinet over “unfulfilled promises”.

Siddiqui had said that his party had supported the federal government in every difficult phase but "injustice was still being done with Sindh".

Following the announcement, several PTI leader and ministers met the MQM-P in Karachi to hear the concerns that they had put forward. It must be kept mind that PM Imran had not accepted Siddiqui's resignation.

MQM-P was not the only ally of the ruling party that has threatened to quit its coalition at the centre. The PTI got much needed relief on Monday after its leaders managed to convince the estranged PML-Q to not leave the alliance.

Leaders of the ruling PTI and its coalition party, the PML-Q announced a truce after hour-long discussions at Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi's residence on Monday.

The announcement was made during a joint press conference after the two parties' delegations met in Lahore in a bid to reconcile. After the talks, leaders of the PTI and the PML-Q said they would go ahead hand-in-hand in the future.

Ahsan Iqbal lambastes govt for 'destroying economy'

Ahsan Iqbal
PML-N's Ahsan Iqbal said on Thursday that the current government "believes 200 million people live in a village and can be fed through a couple of langars and tandoors".

Iqbal was responding to Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh's speech on the National Assembly floor yesterday, regarding the economy.

In his speech, Shaikh had said that those who had themselves approached the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should not be criticising the government for doing the same.

Iqbal, when given the NA floor today, said: "These people kept criticising us at every step of the way, now they are asking us not to criticise them for taking the same measures. If these measures were so bad, why are they carrying them out today?

"They have brought a bad name to national institutions. These institutions did not tell them to give such a budget, these institutions did not tell them to bring inflation. They need to stop hiding behind national institutions and saying that the institutions are faulty.

"They keep crying about current account deficit, they did not understand that the current account deficit had shot up because of the large amount of investment we had put into development projects, especially in the energy sector.

"What they failed to understand is that once these projects were completed, the deficit would also have come down and rationalised," Iqbal said.

Minister for National Food Security Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiar, who took the floor after Iqbal, lamented that the government was facing troubles due to low revenue. He said that currently, there were five million bank accounts in the country but only 0.5m were within the tax net.

"We need to take a moment and think across party lines on how we will run this country when the volume of debt is at 78 per cent. We will have to pay interest and a principle amount on it.

"How will this country be run, even if we earn 5 trillion with a 12pc GDP tax ratio, then the federal government then has to give around 3 trillion to the provinces. So the federal government already starts at a deficit."

He insisted that every government will face the same challenges as the incumbent one. The federal minister said the share of investment by the private sector in Pakistan's economy was a mere 9pc because banks do not have the money to provide loans.

"We need to develop a mindset in this country that investors need to be respected," he said.

"The tragedy of this country is that we keep changing policies," he lamented. "First we [implemented a] nationalisation policy, then [later] we privatised all the banks.

"What are the banks doing? Right now, banks are providing money to the government, or to the main sectors like fertiliser, sugar, cement, on the most favourable interest rates. But the small sector, that of small-medium enterprises (SME), are merely getting 6pc of credit — in 2000, they would get 17-18pc of total credit.

"So we will have to think that when we develop a national development finance institution, the money will flow into SMEs and new sectors."

He also directed the House's attention towards the developing economies of neighbouring countries China and India, adding that by the time Pakistan turns 100, the country will have to feed 400 million people from existing resources.

He urged the parliament to unite and draw up a national economic charter instead of doing politics over the economy.

The session was adjourned until 2pm on Friday after opposition pointed out quorum.

Italy’s far-right leader Salvini to face trial

Italy’s far-right leader Salvini to face trial
Italian far-right leader Matteo Salvini is to stand trial on charges of illegally detaining migrants at sea, after senators voted on Wednesday to strip him of his parliamentary immunity.

A court in Sicily recommended that former interior minister Salvini stand trial for blocking migrants from disembarking from a coast guard boat last July.

But ministers cannot be tried for actions taken while in office unless their parliamentary immunity is revoked.

The Senate’s decision sends the chief of the anti-immigrant League party to trial for abuse of power and illegal detention, charges for which he faces up to 15 years in jail.

“I have defended Italy. I have full and total faith in the justice system,” Salvini told ANSA news agency after the vote.

“I am not worried at all, and I’m proud of what I’ve done,” he said, adding he would “do it again when I get back into power”.

Salvini had refused to allow 116 rescued migrants to leave the Gregoretti coast guard boat — where they had been languishing for about a week in insalubrious conditions — until a deal was reached with other European states to host them.

A Catania court accused him of “abuse of power” in blocking them on board from July 27 to July 31 last year, and of illegally detaining them.

Salvini insists the decision had the backing of the government and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

Before the debate began, Salvini took to Facebook to say he had his “head held high, with the calm conscience of those who have defended their land and people”.

“‘If a man is not ready to fight for his ideas, either his ideas are worthless, or he is’,” Salvini wrote, quoting Ezra Pound, a 20th-century American poet known for his fascist sympathies.

The Gregoretti on July 25 took on board 140 migrants who were trying to make the perilous crossing from war-torn Libya to Europe — the same day 110 migrants drowned off the Libyan coast.

Some migrants in need of urgent medical care were taken from the coastguard vessel but 116 of them remained on board for almost a week.

The then-interior minister’s “closed ports” policy, aimed at stopping migrant arrivals from Libya, saw his popularity numbers shoot up.

Italy has long complained that its European partners have abandoned it to deal alone with migrant arrivals.

Under Italy’s constitution, parliament can block legal proceedings if lawmakers feel the minister was performing his job and in the national interest.

The interior minister can limit or forbid entry into or transit through Italy’s waters on public security grounds — except in cases involving military vessels or ships in non-commercial governmental service like coast guard boats.

Salvini’s League party joined a coalition government as the Five Star Movement’s junior partner in 2018 but gained popularity largely thanks to his tough anti-immigrant stance.

Conte, who has remained prime minister while Salvini provoked his own ousting from government in August last year, says he was not the one to decide whether the migrants should be allowed into port.

“The minister (Salvini) had a new decree approved which strengthened his powers,” Conte said in January. “He claimed the right to decide if and when to disembark the people aboard the Gregoretti.”

Salvini managed to avoid trial in a similar episode, in which he prevented 177 rescued migrants aboard the coast guard vessel Diciotti from disembarking for several days in August 2018.

Government will not take any step against social media users' interests: Awan

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan on Thursday defended the government’s new social media policy, saying that the new rules had been created for the protection of citizens.

"There was no mechanism that protected our citizens' interests [... or] our national integrity," she said, adding that after the enactment of the new policy, social media companies would be mindful of hurting Pakistan's national interests.

The federal government has approved a new policy under which social media companies will be obliged to disclose any information or data to a designated investigation agency, when sought. Failure to do so would entail a fine of up to Rs500 million.

Furthermore, social media platforms will be required to remove any ‘unlawful content’ pointed out to them in writing or electronically signed email within 24 hours, and in emergency cases within six hours. The companies will also have to establish registered offices with a physical address located in Islamabad within the next three months and appoint a focal person.

Awan, while speaking to the media today, insisted that previously, the government "did not know who was creating fake pages and harming socio-cultural and religious values". The new rules, Awan said, would not only expose Pakistan's opponents but would also enable authorities to stop extremists who spread hate on the basis of religion and race.

She claimed that social media was spreading disorder in society by propagating pornography, sexual abuse, child abuse, hate speech and sectarian material. "[About] 73 per cent of Pakistanis are internet users. Social media users are increasing, especially among the youth. We will not take any step that is against the interests of these users," she assured.

She said that because these companies have no offices or focal persons in Pakistan, whenever the government asked them to remove harmful material, the decision depended on the companies' disposition. Under the new law, the companies would have to establish their offices in the country within three months which will bring them in the ambit of the Pakistani legal system, the premier's aide explained.

The social media companies will also be required to share their databank with the government as per the law.

"The companies will have the right to challenge the authority's decision if they think it will harm their interests," Firdous said, adding that the forum for appeal will be the high courts.

Earlier, Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry had also denied perceptions that the new rules made to regulate social media content in the country are for political control.

Speaking to the media outside Parliament House, Chaudhry explained that the new rules were made to regulate advertisements and harmful content on social media.

"The keyword here is harmful content," he said, adding that "social media is used for maligning women, blasphemy and defaming people and anyone on social media knows there are groups that for Rs20,000 or 30,000 will run trends against you and defame you."

He pointed out that digital media "had taken the space of formal media" and there has been an exponential increase in digital advertising. If it isn't regulated, it will further harm the already-suffering journalists and people, and cause damage to formal media, he cautioned.

He said the aim is to hold social media companies answerable within the country's economic framework.

UK Treasury chief quits as PM Johnson shakes up cabinet

The United Kingdom’s Treasury chief Sajid Javid
The United Kingdom’s Treasury chief Sajid Javid unexpectedly resigned on Thursday, throwing a carefully planned shakeup of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative government into turmoil.

Javid had been widely expected to keep his job, the second most powerful in the government, as Johnson fired some cabinet members and promoted more junior ministers to top jobs.

Seen smiling as he entered the prime minister's 10 Downing Street office on Thursday morning to meet Johnson, a spokesman confirmed soon after that Javid had quit.

The government announced that he would be replaced by Rishi Sunak, who was previously a deputy to Javid at the Treasury.

Javid's resignation follows reports he had clashed with Johnson's powerful adviser Dominic Cummings, a self-styled political disruptor who is mistrusted by many lawmakers and officials.

Javid had been due to deliver his annual budget in less than a month. His resignation shakes the government as it faces the challenge of negotiating a new relationship with the 27-nation European Union by the end of this year.

Britain's Press Association news agency reported that Javid had quit after being told to fire all his aides and replace them with staff appointed by the prime minister's office.

Paul Dales, chief UK economist at Capital Economic, said Javid had appeared reluctant to increase public borrowing to fund higher spending. He added that Javid's departure should allow the government to push through even bigger increases in public investment and perhaps resuscitate tax cuts that previously looked dead in the water.

The resignation was a curveball in a cabinet shake-up that was intended to tighten Johnson's grip on government after winning a big parliamentary majority in December’s election. That victory allowed Johnson to take Britain out of the European Union last month, delivering on his key election promise.

Now his Conservative administration faces the even bigger challenge of negotiating a new trading relationship with the EU while also seeking trade deals with the United States and other countries.

Britain and the EU are aiming to have a deal covering trade, security and other areas in place by the time a post-Brexit transition period ends on Dec 31.

So far, the two sides are far apart in their demands. And even with a deal, the UK faces a huge adjustment when decades of seamless trade and travel with the EU end at the start of 2021.

Johnson had intended to keep the most senior ministers in their jobs. His office said Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, Home Secretary Priti Patel, Justice Secretary Robert Buckland and Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove were all staying in their current posts.

Several high-profile women in Johnson's government, including Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom, Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers and Housing Minister Esther McVey all said they had been fired. Johnson also sacked Northern Ireland Secretary Julian Smith in another surprise move. Smith had been widely praised for helping to end the political deadlock that left Northern Ireland without a regional government and assembly for three years.

After pressure from the British and Irish governments, the main Irish nationalist and British unionist power-sharing parties returned to work last month.

As well as reworking his Cabinet, Johnson appointed a new leader for the United Nations’ climate change conference that Britain is due to host later this year. The summit, known as the 26th Conference of the Parties, or COP26, is scheduled to be held in Glasgow in November.

Planning for that has got off to a rocky start, with Johnson last week firing Claire O'Neill, a former British government minister appointed last year to head up the event.

The government said Thursday that Alok Sharma, previously in charge of international development, would become business secretary and also take charge of COP26.

Pakistan concerned over sale of air defence system to India: FO

Foreign Office spokesperson Aisha Farooqui
Islamabad on Thursday expressed concern over Washington’s approval of the sale of an air defence system to New Delhi.

Foreign Office spokesperson Aisha Farooqui in her weekly press briefing stated that South Asia cannot afford a further arms race in the region.

The Indian media on Tuesday had reported that the Trump administration has approved the sale of an Integrated Air Defense Weapon System for $1.8 billion to India. According to the Indian publication The Hindu, the sale was being processed under the Foreign Military Sales and awaits the approval from US Congress.

The State Department had said it had informed Congress that New Delhi plans to use the “defence articles and services to modernize its armed forces, and to expand its existing air defence architecture to counter threats posed by air attack”.

Farooqui shared that Pakistan fears India may carry out an irresponsible action during the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

She said Pakistan would respond effectively to any actions taken by the Indian government.

The spokesperson further stated that Turkey supports Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir, adding that the Turkish president’s visit would improve the existing ties between the two countries.

Farooqui also shared that the UN chief will visit Lahore and Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur on his trip to Pakistan.

Farooqui stated that India’s lockdown of Kashmir has now lasted for 193 days, adding that the Kashmiris have been deprived of their human rights. She stated that the Kashmiri people have been deprived of the right to free speech.

“India has turned occupied Kashmir into the world’s biggest prison,” said the FO spokesperson. She added that Pakistan has informed the world of India’s plans to carry out a false flag operation to divert the world’s attention from Kashmir.

Security a concern everywhere, not just in Pakistan: Sangakkara

Former Sri Lanka captain and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) President Kumar Sangakkara arrives in Pakistan
Former Sri Lanka captain and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) President Kumar Sangakkara on Thursday said that security is a major concern everywhere in the world, adding that the steps that have been taken in Pakistan over the past few years have instilled great confidence in cricketing nations.

Sangakkara will be captaining the club’s 12-man squad in the Feb 13 to 19 tour during which the visitors will play both 20 and 50-over match fixtures against four teams — Lahore Qalandars, Pakistan Shaheens, Northern, and Multan Sultans. All the matches will be held in Lahore.

Addressing a press conference alongside Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief Executive Wasim Khan in Lahore, the MCC president said it had been 47 years since the club last visited Pakistan and 10 years for him personally.

"The more times that international teams tour, the stronger that message becomes. The MCC is here because one of our core philosophies [...] is that the spirit of cricket transcends most barriers that sometimes keep nations and people apart.

Sangakkara also underlined the importance of holding international cricket matches on home ground, adding that that this ultimately contributes towards the "global game".

"A tour to Pakistan has been under discussion for some time, but it was seeing Khan's enthusiasm, the arrangements and the improvements that have been made, that was an eye opener.

“For me personally, I have immensely wonderful memories of playing in Pakistan, especially Lahore," he maintained.

"I was taken to see the name boards that underscore the hundreds that both domestic and international players have scored here and it [ultimately] underlines the importance of cricket being played at home and in your home country.

"For a lot of Pakistani players that are becoming great in their own right for them to be unable to play cricket at their home grounds, in front of their home fans and to [not] have their names go up [on boards] and be recognised is a real shame.

“But slowly cricket is coming back, Sri Lanka was one of the first teams [to come back]. As a Sri Lankan and as president of the MCC, I am so happy we are able to do our part to try and encourage countries to look at Pakistan as one of the best cricketing destinations. It has been that in the past and I am sure it will be that very soon.

“Cricket goes a long way in engaging people from different countries. In 1996, when Sri Lanka was in need of assistance, the unified front the cricketing nation showed to play in the country. For us on this tour, it is about spreading that message, and the gospel of the MCC and supporting Pakistan on its great journey back," he said.

"The MCC is very competitive, we are here to play some good cricket and to win some games. It's great that we have some tough oppositions to play against," he reiterated.

“Cricket belongs to everyone. Players play and for them to have that support you need to have the fans. You need to have an underpinning of young children being inspired to take up the game. If there is no home cricket for a very long period of time, there is a danger that the hunger [for the game] might go away."

The more cricket you play at home, the more times young fans can see their players in action. That is wonderful for the game and for the country and for the global game, he stated.

“We should not lose sight of the importance. Pakistan’s strength, in the big picture, is having global cricket in a healthy and strong state. The MCC tour is a part of this puzzle," he said.

Turkey’s Erdogan to visit Pakistan on February 13

Turkish President Receb Tayab Erdogan
Turkish President Receb Tayab Erdogan will make his official visit to Pakistan from the 13-14 of February, 2020, informed Adviser to Prime Minister for Commerce, Textile, Industry & Production and Investment, Abdul Razak Dawood.

“H.E. Recep Tayab Erdogan, President of Turkey will be on an official visit to Pakistan from the 13-14 of February, 2020," informed Dawood in a tweet.

The advisor added that the Turkish President will be accompanied by a delegation of Turkish businessmen. He also requested the Pakistani businessmen who are interested in B2B with the delegates to contact with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP).

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will address Pakistan's parliament on Feb. 14 during his two-day visit to Islamabad, a Pakistani official announced on Thursday.

Asad Qaisar, the speaker of the National Assembly -- the lower house of Pakistan’s parliament -- announced that Erdogan would address the joint sitting of the parliament for the record fourth time.

Presiding the National Assembly session, Qaisar said he would consult with the parliamentary leaders of all the political parties with respect to Erdogan's visit, state-run Radio Pakistan reported.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Aisha Farooqui confirmed Erdogan’s visit next week, however Turkey is yet to officially confirm it.

At a weekly press briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, she said: "The visit is taking place as per the schedule agreed by both sides. They are working very hard to finalize the substantive program of this visit.”

She reiterated that Pakistan and Turkey have very warm, brotherly and cordial relations.

“We support each other on core issues. Pakistan looks forward to the visit of the Turkish president. All details of the visit will be shared with you in due course,” Farooqui added.

Erdogan paid his last visit to Pakistan in November 2016 -- his first visit to the South Asian nuclear state since assuming the presidency in August 2014. Previously, he visited Pakistan twice as the prime minister of Turkey.

He is the only head of state who addressed Pakistan’s parliament thrice.

Ankara and Islamabad have boosted bilateral defense and security cooperation in recent years. In October 2018, Pakistan Navy commissioned a 17,000-ton fleet tanker built in collaboration with a Turkish defense company in the southern port city of Karachi.
