Ukrainian President Zelensky says Russia should immediately start peace talks.

Ukrainian President
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Russia to resume talks without delay. He says this is the only way Russia can compensate for the damage done by its mistakes.

He described the devastation caused by the Russian aggression in Ukraine as "regrettable". He added that it was time for the Moscow government to recognize Ukraine's sovereignty and integrity.

"I want you all to listen to me now, especially the people of Moscow," he said. It's time to meet, it's time to talk. It is time to restore Ukraine's territorial integrity and justice.

He said that if this did not happen then the loss of Taurus would be so great that it would take you many generations to make up for it.

It should be noted that negotiations are underway between Russia and Ukraine, but no agreement has been reached yet regarding the ceasefire.

Biden warns Chinese leader backing Russia's war in Ukraine

US President Joe Biden
US President Joe Biden laid out to Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Friday the "consequences" of any backing for Russia in its war against Ukraine, the White House said, as Beijing showed no sign of joining Western condemnation of the invasion.

The comments came during a nearly two-hour phone call between the leaders of the world s two largest economies, focusing on Ukraine, where China s close ally Russia is in the fourth week of a bloody assault.

The White House said that Biden described to Xi "the implications and consequences if China provides material support to Russia as it conducts brutal attacks against Ukrainian cities and civilians."

The White House refused to characterize Xi s response to the warning or say how hard Biden pushed him. "It wasn t about making asks, it wasn t about making assessments. It was about having an ongoing dialogue," Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

But she said that "is something we ll be watching and the world will be watching."

Beijing was ambiguous about Xi s position after the call.

Chinese state television CCTV reported that Xi said the war was "in no one s interest" and that "state-to-state relations cannot go to the stage of military hostilities."

However, there was no mention of direct criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a readout from the Chinese foreign ministry laid some responsibility for Russia s invasion of its neighbor to the West.

"The US and NATO should also have dialogue with Russia to address the crux of the Ukraine crisis and ease security concerns of both Russia and Ukraine," the foreign ministry noted.

IMF raised questions over relief package announced by PM

IMF
International Monetary Fund (IMF) raised more questions over the financing of a relief package announced by the prime minister last month, Pakistan may not be able to draw the next tranche of the $6 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for over a month.

In a televised address to the nation at the end of February, PM Imran Khan had announced a reduction of Rs10 per litre in petrol/diesel and Rs5 in electricity prices. He further claimed the rates would remain stable until the next federal budget.

Official sources told Dawn that the IMF mission and Pakistani authorities remained engaged in discussions on the seventh review of the Fund programme, and decided to meet again on Monday. The sources said a final round of policy-level talks between Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin and the Fund mission was being scheduled for Tuesday.

They said the IMF team asked more questions about the financing of the prime minister’s relief package. They also expressed concern over the growth prospects in view of a major cut in the Public Sector Development Programme, and wanted precise project details that would be affected by this cut.

IHC refuses to stop ECP from acting against PM Imran

Islamabad High Court
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) declined to issue an interim order on Friday to restrain the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from proceeding against Prime Minister Imran Khan and federal ministers for allegedly violating the code of conduct during the ongoing campaign for local government elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The ECP earlier issued notices to Prime Minister Khan, KP Governor Shah Farman, Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, federal ministers Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Asad Umar and Murad Saeed, and others for allegedly violating the canvassing rules ahead of the polls.

The second phase of local government election in the remaining 18 out of 35 KP districts is set to take place on March 31. Meanwhile, the first phase of local government polls in 17 out of 36 districts of Punjab are due in the last week of May.

After receiving the ECP notices, PM Khan and Planning Minister Asad Umar petitioned the IHC. The court registrar’s office then raised administrative objections to the petition, which were later removed by the prime minister and the petition was subsequently fixed for a hearing by Justice Aamer Farooq.

Russia tells Google to stop spreading threats against Russians on YouTube

youtube
Russia on Friday demanded that Alphabet Inc's (GOOGL.O) Google stop spreading what it called threats against Russian citizens on its YouTube video-sharing platform, a move that could presage an outright block of the service on Russian territory.

The regulator, Roskomnadzor, said adverts on the platform were calling for the communications systems of Russia and Belarus' railway networks to be suspended and that their dissemination was evidence of the U.S. company's anti-Russian position. It did not say which accounts were publishing the adverts.

"The actions of YouTube's administration are of a terrorist nature and threaten the life and health of Russian citizens," the regulator said.

"Roskomnadzor categorically opposes such advertising campaigns and demands that Google stop broadcasting anti-Russia videos as soon as possible."

Google removed an advertisement that was flagged by the Russian government, according to a source familiar with the matter who declined to describe it.

Xi stresses joint China-US efforts for world peace, tranquillity
China and the United States must not only guide their relations forward along the right track, but also shoulder their share of international responsibilities and work for world peace and tranquillity, Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday.

Xi made the remarks in a video call with US President Joe Biden at the latter's request.

Noting the international landscape has experienced new major developments since their first virtual meeting last November, Xi said the prevailing trend of peace and development is facing serious challenges, and the world is neither tranquil nor stable.

"The Ukraine crisis is not something we want to see," Xi said.

The events again show that countries should not come to the point of meeting on the battlefield. Conflict and confrontation are not in anyone's interest, and peace and security are what the international community should treasure the most, he added.

"As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and the world's two leading economies, we must not only guide the China-US relations forward along the right track, but also shoulder our share of international responsibilities and work for world peace and tranquillity," Xi said.

Moscow accused of war crimes as Ukraine

Russia Ukraine conflict
Bloody new attacks on civilians fuelled accusations Thursday that Russia is committing war crimes in Ukraine, as the United States warned it will make China pay for any support given to Moscow s assault.

Three weeks into Russia s devastating invasion, the harsh tally of assaults on civilian targets grew to include a school and a cultural centre in the town of Merefa, pounded by overnight artillery fire with 21 people killed, authorities said.

Despite the mounting carnage, punishing international sanctions and unexpectedly strong resistance from Ukrainians, top US diplomat Antony Blinken said Thursday he saw no sign that Russian leader Vladimir Putin "is prepared to stop."

Read more: In call with Putin, Erdogan offers to host him and Zelenskiy for talks

"Intentionally targeting civilians is a war crime. After all the destruction of the past few weeks, I find it difficult to conclude that the Russians are doing otherwise," he said, following warnings from the G7 that those behind such crimes "will be held responsible."

Blinken was doubling down on the tough language used by President Joe Biden -- who a day earlier branded Putin a "war criminal" and on Thursday called him both a "thug" and a "murderous dictator."

He spoke as authorities were still trying to count the dead at the theatre targeted by a bomb in southern Mariupol a day earlier -- which Ukraine s leader Volodymr Zelensky held up as evidence "Russia has become a terrorist state".

In the latest of a series of resonant speeches to Western lawmakers, Zelensky told the German parliament that Moscow was building a new Cold War wall across Europe, "between freedom and bondage."

Russia s unrelenting onslaught on Mariupol has drawn particular horror.

Local officials say more than 2,000 people have died so far in indiscriminate Chechnya-style shelling of the strategic port, and 80 percent of its housing has been destroyed.

Under new Russian shelling, rescuers were combing through the smoking rubble of the Drama Theatre, where Ukrainian officials said more than 1,000 civilians were sheltering in a basement bomb shelter when it was bombed. Human Rights Watch believes they numbered at least 500.

Among the 30,000 civilians said to have fled Mariupol so far, evacuees said they were forced to melt snow for drinking water and cook food scraps on open fires, with water and power supplies cut off.

"In the streets there are the bodies of many dead civilians," Tamara Kavunenko, 58, told AFP after reaching the central city of Zaporizhzhia.

Pakistan confident of getting seventh IMF review passed easily

Pakistan confident of getting seventh IMF review passed easily
Pakistan hopes to get a positive response from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the seventh review, after addressing the Fund's concerns regarding the prime minister's relief package in detail, citing Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin.

"We thoroughly briefed the IMF mission over their concerns regarding PM's Relief Package on petrol, diesel and electricity prices and tax amnesty for industrial sector," Tarin said while speaking about the government's meeting with the IMF.

He said that the IMF team will return with its final assessment tomorrow (Friday) to hold virtual talks.

The minister claimed that there was no difference of opinion between the two sides on macroeconomic figures till December 2021 and the pending seventh review was "almost done".

Read more: Pakistan confident of getting seventh IMF review passed easily

When asked about the IMF's demand to remove exemptions and raise the rate under the Personal Income Tax (PIT), Tarin said nothing regarding PIT came under discussion as it would be a part of the next review’s agenda under the IMF programme because taxation measures would be taken for the next budget 2022-23.

Reacting to Tarin’s claims, officials said it would be quite difficult to strike a staff-level agreement with the IMF at a time when the political dust is yet to settle.

They said a political crisis in the country is looming over the ongoing staff-level review talks and a decision on the next loan tranche is likely after an outcome on the no-confidence move due later this month.

Pakistani authorities have so far explained to the IMF that the amnesty is more of an industrial package, which entails five-year tax holidays on projects with investment by Pakistani expatriates in Pakistan.

Pakistan will have to convince the IMF for breaching the commitment of raising the petroleum levy by Rs4/month until it reaches Rs30/litre.

This has become impossible due to the unprecedented rise in world oil prices and it is hoped the IMF will view it with leniency.

The ongoing discussions will focus on energy price reform, which seeks to bring electricity and gas prices in line with cost recovery along with the formulas placed in the amended NEPRA and OGRA Acts.

This would require raising the base electricity tariff and taking major steps to eliminate growth in circular debt in the power sector.

Pakistan and IMF will have to evolve consensus on a revised macroeconomic and fiscal framework for estimating budget deficit and current account deficit.

The government had envisaged the budget deficit at 6.3% of the GDP, which was likely to touch the mark of 7% of GDP for the outgoing fiscal year. Although the size of the country’s economy increased manifold in the aftermath of rebasing of national accounts from 2005-6 to 2015-16 so it escalated to Rs55.5 trillion from earlier estimates of Rs48 trillion.

The size of GDP is estimated to go up to Rs63.8 trillion for the current fiscal year 2021-22; however, the budget deficit is all set to escalate further and likely to touch Rs4.4 trillion highest ever in an absolute figure in the country’s history during any fiscal year.

IMF assessed the current account deficit at $12.9 billion on eve of the last 6th review of the Fund as it had already touched $11.6 billion in the first seven months of the current fiscal year. Now the IMF will have to revise its current account deficit projection upward in the range of $18 to $20 billion. Thus arrangements of $5 to $7 billion additional financing will have to be bridged to avoid depletion of foreign currency reserves.

Meta introduces special initiatives for online safety of women in Pakistan
Meta has launched two new initiatives in Pakistan, focused on womens’ safety online that includes the Online Safety Guide and StopNCII (Non-consensual intimate images) to help users safely navigate cyberspace.

The critical safety advisory available in English and Urdu is expected to boost digital literacy and responsible online behaviour among users, thereby creating safer online spaces for women to connect and express themselves without restraints.

The safety guide, now available at Meta’s Safety Centre, is part of the company’s efforts to equip and prepare users for the challenges of the modern digital world. Millions of people in Pakistan use Meta platforms to connect and pursue shared interests.

However, it is always good to update oneself on issues around online harassment, unwanted messages and a range of fraudulent and criminal activities in the online space.

Meta has policies and systems in place to tackle online violence against women, aided by awareness programs to enable and empower them to defend themselves against unscrupulous elements online.

The safety guide features all the tools around safety available on Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp and explains how women can adopt them for safer internet use and protect themselves from criminal & fraudulent activities.

Keeping the focus on safety, StopNCII was developed with Meta’s expert guidance and funding in collaboration with a global NGO partner —the UK Revenge Porn Helpline — to stop the sharing of non-consensual intimate images (NCII), often referred to as Revenge Porn.

StopNCII.org has a global footprint and currently services people through regional partners that advocate for local victims. It uses the latest innovative technology to block compromising photos and videos proactively from spreading online.

Meta has localised StopNCII into an Urdu portal as well that can be used by users concerned for their online safety and privacy to initiate a case. Once the case is initiated, Meta can proactively block the spread of the compromising images and videos before they can spread online.

The technology doesn’t require the images to leave the person’s device, instead only the hash or numerical code is shared with the platform. The portal also integrates information and vital voices of survivors, experts, advocates, and tech partners of Meta for women seeking help and guidance.

Meta’s partner organisation in Pakistan, Digital Rights Foundation (DRF) organised an online roundtable in connection with the launch of the StopNCII portal in Urdu. The participants of the roundtable included representatives from civil society organisations, regional experts from Meta, digital experts and rights activists

Women and vulnerable social media users can use Meta’s dedicated Safety Hub "Safety@Facebook", also available in the Urdu language, to access the necessary information and safety tools for a safe online experience.

Intel plan to invest ten billions euros in the European Union

intel
American chip-making giant Intel said it planned to invest tens of billions of euros in the European Union, as the continent seeks to reduce its reliance on semiconductors from Asia.

The project to boost the entire production process, from the research of new technologies to the manufacturing and packaging of semiconductors, could total up to 80 billion euros ($87.9 billion) over the next decade, the group said in a statement.

The production of the key technology, also known as chips, has become a strategic priority in Europe as well as the United States, after the shock of the pandemic choked off supply, bringing factories to a standstill and emptying stores of products.

The details of the of the announcement were hotly anticipated in Europe, where governments have been jostling to host new production facilities as the continent seeks to reduce its dependence on Asian chip imports.

Earlier this year the EU passed the Chips Act, a 43-billion-euro plan to boost production on the continent of the component, used in everything from electric vehicles to wind turbines.

Speaking at the Intel launch event, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the US group’s announcement was the "first major achievement" under the act.

Shujaat urges govt, opposition to call off D-Chowk rallies in 'greater interest of country'

Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat
Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) President Chaudhry Shujaat has advised the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and opposition to call off their respective power shows, which they plan on holding at Islamabad's D-Chowk on the eve of a no-trust vote against Prime Minister Imran Khan in the National Assembly.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Shujaat appealed to both the sides to immediately announce the cancellation of their rallies in the "greater interest of the country".

"Given the current situation in Pakistan, [we] cannot afford this dangerous confrontation," he said, adding that "the politics of rallies and numbers" by the opposition and government had further troubled the people already struggling in the face of inflation and poverty.

The PML-Q chief, who has been a key ally of the PTI so far, said it's usually the opposition parties that indulge in the "politics of rallies" but this time around the government was also holding public meetings in competition with its rivals.

"Holding rallies is not the government's job," he said.

Shujaat warned that the politics of tit-for-tat could create "political chaos and a crisis", which would benefit Pakistan's "internal and external enemies".

"And everyone would regret if someone is killed during this confrontation," he remarked.

He urged the PTI and opposition parties to not lead their supporters towards "provocative politics".

He asked both the sides to participate in the upcoming no-trust motion in a democratic manner and set aside their egos in favour of democracy and the Constitution.

Shujaat said the PML-Q's politics has always had the country's interests at its heart and that his party prioritises "reconciliation" in politics.

He also said that those who called the PML-Q a "small party have forgotten that we have made big decisions for the sake of the country and democracy". The remark was an apparent response to Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar and Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid calling the PML-Q "a party of few districts" on separate occasions during the last few days.

Shujaat's statement has come amid rising political temperatures in the wake of the joint opposition — primarily the PPP and Pakistan Democratic Movement — submitting a no-confidence motion against PM Imran last week. Since then, both the sides have been seen increasingly engaged in trading barbs and insults.

It was on one such occasion that PM Imran announced last week the PTI's plan to hold a public meeting at D-Chowk ahead of the no-trust vote as he delivered a scathing speech against the opposition.

PTI Senator Faisal Javed Khan later announced on Monday that the party had finalised March 27 for holding the rally.

Hours after the announcement, PDM President Maulana Fazlur Rehman also gave a call to the public and workers of its component parties to begin a long march towards Islamabad on March 23 to stage a sit-in which he said could continue till the completion of the voting process in the National Assembly.

As Shujaat opposed these decisions today, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry clarified in response to the statement that the objective of PTI's rally at D-Chowk was not "confrontation".

"The PTI is a democratic party and we don't practice the politics of extremism. Neither do we believe in confrontations," he tweeted.

In a subsequent tweet, he added that "public opinion is the real decision in a democracy and rallies were an important means to express this opinion."

He further said if the opposition wanted to hold a peaceful rally, "we welcome it and will facilitate this and will provide them with all facilities".

Pakistanis prefer to go down with me than supporting 'three stooges': PM Imran Khan

 PM Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday termed opposition politicians — Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari — "three stooges", quipping that he was thankful to them for filing a no-trust motion against him that had "lifted my party".

Addressing the Pakistan Overseas Convention in Islamabad, the premier shared that he told party members the opposition's no-trust move was a "blessing" as it had "lifted" the entire party and now "everyone" was heading to the capital for the PTI's rally at D-Chowk on March 27.

"I was thinking of how the country changed suddenly in 10 days, inflation was forgotten and my entire party was lifted."

All the opposition politicians used to call each other corrupt, he said, thanking them for coming together so the nation could see that "if they are the ones to save Pakistan, it is better to drown with Imran Khan".

The premier said that PTI had struggled from the grassroots which is why the opposition parties could not compete with it.

"This is a difficult time and people are facing difficulties due to inflation but they (the opposition) misunderstood and thought people had forgotten about their corruption and they fell into the captain's trap," he said, asserting that the opposition would "fail" not only in making the no-confidence resolution successful but also in the upcoming general elections.

FM Qureshi contact with UN Secretary General to discuss regional, global issues

shah mehmood qureshi
Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi spoke on the telephone with United Nations Secretary General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres on Monday here and exchanged views on current regional and global issues.

The Foreign Minister briefed the UNSG chief on the so-called “accidental” firing of a missile by India on 9 March 2022 which fell to the ground in Pakistan’s territory. He stressed that it was a blatant violation of Pakistan’s airspace and reflective of India’s disregard for aviation safety as well as regional peace and stability. The Foreign Minister emphasized that Pakistan continued to act with restraint and responsibility.

Noting the multiple shortcomings and technical lapses of a serious nature in India’s management of strategic weapons, the Foreign Minister underscored Pakistan’s demand for a joint probe into the incident. The Foreign Minister added that the incident was consistent with India’s irresponsible conduct and needed to be addressed by the international community, including the UN Security Council.

Foreign Minister Qureshi and Secretary General Guterres also discussed Pakistan-UN cooperation including in the area of peacekeeping as well as for overcoming the challenges posed by the triple global crisis of COVID-19, sustainable development and climate change.

On the situation in Ukraine, the Foreign Minister shared Pakistan’s perspective on the ongoing conflict, its adverse economic impact on developing countries, and Pakistan’s efforts in support of a solution through dialogue and diplomacy. He pointed out that Prime Minister Imran Khan had been stressing from the outset that developing countries suffer the most from conflict anywhere in the world.

The Secretary General apprised the Foreign Minister of the recent initiatives being explored by the UN to address sky-rocketing inflation worldwide in the wake of the situation in Ukraine. He also highlighted the need to collectively undertake measures for countering the disruptions in global supply chains which were leading to food and energy shortages with a particularly adverse impact on developing countries. The Foreign Minister lauded the Secretary General’s efforts in that regard and assured him of Pakistan’s full support and cooperation in these endeavours.

Hard for opposition to digest the conference of OIC FMs, Fawad Chaudhry

fawad hussain
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain on Monday deplored Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman’s announcement for holding a long march towards Islamabad on March 23.

Chaudhry Fawad in a message on Twitter said the real agenda of Fazlur Rehman was to sabotage meeting of the foreign ministers of members’ states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) scheduled in Islamabad on the same days (March 22-23).

The minister said it was hard for the opposition to digest the conference of OIC FMs after a hiatus of 15 years. Therefore, they wanted to block Islamabad on March 23 when the whole country would be celebrating the Pakistan Day.

The minister said the government knew how to deal with the miscreants.

Long March towards Islamabad on March 23, PDM

PDM
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief and Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chairman Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday called on the entire nation to march towards the federal capital on March 23 for an anti-government long march.

Addressing the media after the meeting of the joint opposition in Islamabad, Maulana Fazlur Rehman asked the workers of joint opposition parties to reach Islamabad on March 23 for a massive power show.

The PDM chief said that we will hold a historic rally from the doors of Parliament house to Shahra-e-Dastoor through which the members of the parliament would be provided a safe passage to reach the House to attend the parliament session.

He said that the people should be ready for staying in Islamabad and we don’t know for how long the march would last.

He said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) have also been invited to take part in the long march. He expressed the confidence that their response would be positive.

Fazlur Rehman said that the no-confidence motion tabled by the joint opposition against the prime minister was in-line with the expectations and the hopes of the Pakistani people.

Fazl lashed out at the PTI-led government for going against the opposition’s no-trust move by “warning the lawmakers from going to the Parliament” and opting for “unconstitutional” tactics.

He said that the Speaker National Assembly was bound by the constitution to call a session on voting on the no-confidence motion after the requisition for the session has been submitted.

“If the speaker does not follow this, he is liable to legal action,” Fazl warned, adding that the meeting’s participants also stressed that the session’s first agenda point should be of the no-confidence motion.

Earlier, leader of the opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Shahbaz Sharif hosted a dinner in honor of the top leadership of the opposition. The PML-N president himself received the delegation of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Security for Pompeo costing $2 million per month amid threats from Iran: report

Pompeo and Hook
The State Department is reportedly paying more than $2 million per month on security for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a former top aide, as the two men face “serious and credible” threats from Iran.

The Associated Press, citing a State Department report from February labeled “sensitive but unclassified,” reported on Saturday that the department has spent $13.1 million between August 2021 and February 2022 on protection for Pompeo and former Iran envoy Brian Hook. The two men have reportedly been receiving 24-hour security.

Pompeo and Hook headed the U.S. “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran during the Trump administration. The report obtained by the AP said threats from Iran have continued since former President Trump departed office.

Pompeo automatically qualified for 180 days of protection from the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security after departing office because of his high-ranking position, according to the AP.

Current Secretary of State Antony Blinken, however, has reportedly extended that security in 60-day blocks a number of times because of “a serious and credible threat from a foreign power or agent of a foreign power arising from duties performed by former Secretary Pompeo while employed by the department,” according to the report cited by the AP.

Hook was also given the special protection after leaving office for the same reason, according to the AP, and his protection has also reportedly been extended in 60-day chunks.

Pompeo announced in August 2020 that Hook was resigning from the State Department. Pompeo served as the top U.S. diplomat until Trump departed office in January 2021.

Asked for comment on the AP’s report, a State Department spokesperson told The Hill on Sunday that it does not “discuss the specifics of protective operations.”

The spokesperson did, however, say that Congress approved new terms that allow ex-State Department officials to receive protection if they face “a serious and credible threat from a foreign power or the agent of a foreign power” related to their time in office.

“Under the protective services provision, the Secretary of State, in consultation with the Director of National Intelligence, determines and reports to Congressional leadership and the appropriate congressional committees if a former or retired senior State Department official would receive protection,” the spokesperson added.

The State Department and Director of National Intelligence have to decide by March 16 whether or not to extend Pompeo and Hook’s protection for another 60 days, according to the AP.

The State Department created the report because its special protection budget is set to run out of funds in June unless it receives more money, the news wire noted.

"As new requirements arise and threats evolve, we will seek the necessary resources to ensure mission success," the spokesperson added to The Hill.

News of Pompeo and Hook’s protection comes as the global effort to revive a nuclear deal with Iran has been thrown into doubt amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Pompeo’s name has been tossed around as a potential Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential election. Asked over the summer about any plans for the race, Pompeo said “I want to continue to have an impact on the things that I care about, both here and abroad.”

Prime Minister Imran Khan will visit Swat on 16 March

PM Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan will visit Swat on March 16 (Wednesday) as part of his mass contact campaign after the joint opposition submitted a no-confidence motion in the National Assembly to remove his from power.

According to sources, Prime Minister Imran Khan will also address a public meeting on Swat during his visit.

Earlier on Sunday, Prime Minister Imran while addressing a mammoth public meeting in Hafizabad said that attempts are being made to buy the conscience of people to bring down the government.

He said that unless a nation stood united against corruption and injustices, these forms of evils would continue to swell, resulting in the degeneration of a society.

The prime minister said that a true leader would not bow or please anyone at the sake of his nation and country. “Our previous prime minister sat before the US president trembling and holding a paper in his hand. Will such kind of leaders can raise self-respect of a nation!” he said without naming former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s meeting with former US president.

Public should be ready to reach Islamabad at any moment: Fazal ur Rehman

Fazal ur Rehman
Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Sunday has asked the public to be ready as the Opposition will summon them to Islamabad at any moment as the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan has been submitted to the National Assembly.

Talking to journalists regarding the no-trust move, Fazl said the PM has lost the majority as well as the trust of his allies.

“The matter is out of PM Khan’s hands now,” he claimed, adding that “he should gather 172 members against the Opposition in the National Assembly rather than gathering one million people for the Islamabad rally.”

The PDM chief said that the workers should reach Islamabad as soon as they are summoned.

Taking a jibe at Sheikh Rasheed, who had claimed a day prior that he is standing in support with PM Imran Khan "like a wall", Fazl said that the so-called support is nothing short of feeble.

He further criticised the interior minister and said that "he is someone who bites the hand that feeds him," adding that "no one can stop the Opposition from entering the federal capital".

Talking about the incumbent government, the JUI-F chief said that its days are numbered.

Sheikh Rasheed retracts 'blackmail' statement against PML-Q

Sheikh Rasheed
Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed on Sunday retracted his statement — which was issued in an apparent reference to PML-Q leaders who have reportedly demanded the removal of Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar — and clarified that he "did not point out any specific party."

A day ago, Rasheed had said that "I am not like those who have five seats and blackmail the premier to assume the chief minister's office."

In today's statement, the interior minister clarified that when he used the "blackmailing" reference, he did not name PML-Q or the BAP. Rasheed added that Chaudhry Shujaat "is my brother" and prayed for his good health. “I will never speak against him,” Rasheed said.

We are standing with PM Imran Khan like a brick wall, he added and reiterated that the premier will finish his five years in the office.

"After two days, Imran Khan's position will become clearer. Whoever stands with Imran Khan, the nation will respect them," he claimed.

Answering a question related to the no-confidence motion, the interior minister said that the Opposition is doing what they always do.

"I was once a part of the Opposition and we also used to make such futile claims," he said.

When asked about the National Assembly session, Rasheed said that the session has to be convened by the speaker and the decision of the speaker will be legal and constitutional.

"The speaker's decision cannot be challenged in any court. The days from March 22 to 30 are very important," he said.

Yesterday, Rasheed and Minister for Water Resources Moonis Elahi came face-to-face when Rasheed told journalists in Quetta that he isn't among those allies who "blackmail" Prime Minister Imran Khan for getting the top slot in Punjab.

In response, Elahi had said he respected the interior minister but asked Rasheed not to forget his past.

"Sheikh Rasheed might have forgotten that the leaders of [PML-Q] today are the ones who used to give money to him while he was a student," the federal minister added.

In response to the interior minister's comments, BAP President Jam Kamal Khan had also said: "Balochistan Awami Party takes its own decision, not Sheikh Rasheed."

Everything will be clear" once ECP announces decision regarding PTI’s foreign funding case: Bilawal

bilawal bhutto
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Sunday has said that "everything will be clear" once the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announces a decision regarding PTI’s foreign funding case.

Addressing a press conference, Bilawal said that the Opposition has taken a democratic step to oust Prime Minister Imran Khan as it is the Opposition’s right.

He called the PM an “undemocratic” person and said: "We have challenged him democratically."

The PPP chairman claimed the PM is "hatching a plan to stop the parliamentarians from voting" but the Opposition will "not allow him to cheat."

He also said that the Opposition is moving towards "transparent elections" by bringing about the no-confidence motion.

“Imran Khan is preventing his members from voting. People should know who has received funding from India and Israel," said Bilawal while referring to PTI's foreign funding case.

The PPP chairman also said that his party has met other political parties to overthrow the "selected" prime minister.

“Meetings with our allies have been better than expected,” he added. “Only that person who has people’s mandate will be able to deal with difficult situations."

PM was never concerned with prices of potatoes, tomatoes as he came to ruin state: Shahbaz Sharif

Shahbaz Sharif
PML-N President and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Sunday reacted to Prime Minister Imran Khan's speech and said that it was understood that the premier was "never concerned about the prices of potatoes and tomatoes" as he had come to ruin the country.

In an official statement, the PML-N leader said that PM Imran Khan's speech in Hafizabad was a "testament to his defeat".

Shahbaz implied that since PM Imran Khan is not concerned about the poor of the country, he did not come to power to fix the prices of the basic commodities, such as potatoes and tomatoes.

Earlier today, PM Imran Khan had said that he did not join politics to know the prices of "aloo and tamatar," instead, he had become a politician for the sake of the country's youth.

"You had indeed joined politics to see the fall of Kashmir and to stop the projects of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)," Shahbaz said. "You came to increase Pakistan's ranking in the global corruption index, you came for destruction, you came to anger Pakistan's friends, and you came to hand over Pakistan's economic sovereignty to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)."

The PML-N president went on to say that PM Imran Khan had assumed office so that he could create "illegal construction schemes" and turn his "black money into white money."

Further criticising the premier, Shahbaz said that the reason PM Imran came to power was to increase the price of petrol from Rs96 to Rs160.

"You have transformed Pakistan into the third-most-expensive country of the world. Under your rule, the people of Pakistan are suffering from inflation, unemployment, and economic catastrophe — all of which have turned out to be a doomsday for the masses," he said.

Shahbaz continued: "Imran Sahib, your work is done, now go home and let the nation breathe a sigh of relief."

Sanctions could cause space station to crash: Roscosmos

Sanctions could cause space station to crash
Western sanctions against Russia could cause the International Space Station to crash, the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos warned on Saturday, calling for the punitive measures to be lifted.

According to Dmitry Rogozin, the sanctions, some of which predate Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, could disrupt the operation of Russian spacecraft servicing the ISS.

As a result, the Russian segment of the station — which helps correct its orbit — could be affected, causing the 500-tonne structure to “fall down into the sea or onto land”, the Roscosmos chief wrote on Telegram.

“The Russian segment ensures that the station’s orbit is corrected (on average 11 times a year), including to avoid space debris”, said Rogozin, who regularly expresses his support for the Russian army in Ukraine on social networks.

Publishing a map of the locations where the ISS could possibly come down, he pointed out that it was unlikely to be in Russia.

“But the populations of other countries, especially those led by the ‘dogs of war’, should think about the price of the sanctions against Roscosmos”, he continued, describing the countries who imposed sanctions as “crazy”.

Rogozin similarly raised the threat of the space station falling to earth last month while blasting Western sanctions on Twitter.

On March 1, Nasa said it was trying to find a solution to keep the ISS in orbit without Russia’s help. Crews and supplies are transported to the Russian segment by Soyuz spacecraft. But Rogozin said the launcher used for take-off had been “under US sanctions since 2021 and under EU and Canadian sanctions since 2022”.

Roscosmos said it had appealed to Nasa, the Canadian Space Agency and the European Space Agency, “demanding the lifting of illegal sanctions against our companies”.

Saudi Arabia puts to death record 81 people in one day

Saudi Arabia puts to death record 81 people in one day
Saudi Arabia said on Saturday it executed a record 81 people in one day for a variety of terrorism-related offences, exceeding the total number it sentenced to death last year.

All had been “found guilty of committing multiple heinous crimes”, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported, saying they included convicts linked to the Daesh group, or Al Qaeda, Yemen’s Houthi rebel forces or “other terrorist organisations”.

Those executed had been plotting attacks in the kingdom — including killing of a large number of civilians and members of the security forces, the SPA statement read.

“They also include convictions for targeting government personnel and vital economic sites, the killing of law enforcement officers and maiming their bodies, and planting land mines to target police vehicles,” the SPA said.

“The convictions include crimes of kidnapping, torture, rape, smuggling arms and bombs into the kingdom,” it added.

Of the 81 people killed — the kingdom’s highest number of recorded executions in one day — 73 were Saudi citizens, seven were Yemeni and one was a Syrian national.

SPA said all those executed were tried in Saudi courts, with trials overseen by 13 judges, held over three separate stages for each individual.

“The kingdom will continue to take a strict and unwavering stance against terrorism and extremist ideologies that threaten stability,” the report by SPA added.

The wealthy Gulf country has one of the world’s highest execution rates, and has often carried out death sentences by beheading.

Saudi Arabia has been the target of a series of deadly shootings and bombings since late 2014 carried out by IS fighters.

Saudi Arabia is also leading a military coalition that has been fighting in Yemen since 2015 to support the government against Iran-backed Houthi rebels, and who have launched strikes on the kingdom.

Saturday’s announcement of 81 deaths came against the backdrop of a total of 69 executions in all of 2021.

Ukraine sees change in Moscow’s approach to talks

Ukraine sees change in Moscow’s approach to talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that Russia had adopted a “fundamentally different approach” in talks to end the conflict, as French and German leaders pressed the Russian president to end the days-long and deadly siege of port city of Mariupol.

In a media briefing, Zelensky said that Russia’s new approach was in contrast to earlier talks at which Moscow only “issued ultimatums”.

He said he was “happy to have a signal from Russia” after President Vladimir Putin said he saw “some positive shifts” in their dialogue.

Putin had earlier indicated that negotiations were “now being held on an almost daily basis”.

Russian and Ukrainian negotiators have held several rounds of talks since Putin sent in troops to the neighbouring country.

Turkey on Thursday hosted the first talks between the Russian and Ukrainian foreign ministers since the invasion.

The talks have led to the opening of several humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians from combat areas. Both sides have accused each other of blocking these efforts.

This, however, did not discourage France and Germany to urge Putin on Saturday to end the brutal siege of the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, the French presidency said after three-way talks.

“The situation is very difficult and humanly intolerable” in Mariupol, a source in the Elysee presidential palace said, after what it termed a “very frank and difficult discussion” with the Russian leader.

“The only decision President Putin must take is to lift the siege.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office also accused Putin of “lies” for alleging that Ukrainian forces had committed human rights abuses by using civilians as human shields.

The 75-minute three-way phone call involving Macron, the Russian leader and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz focussed on France and Germany’s call for an immediate ceasefire and steps towards a diplomatic solution, sources in the French and German leaders’ offices said.

Macron told Putin “the Russian army’s abuses must cease”, the source said, warning that its actions could qualify as war crimes.

They said the two leaders spoke separately before the call with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, who asked them to call on Putin to halt the fighting.

Russian forces are closing in on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and bombarding several other cities. The offensive has driven millions of Ukrainians from their homes.

The UN said the number of refugees fleeing Ukraine since the Russian invasion began was now nearly 2.6 million. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said there were 2,597,543 refugees who had fled Ukraine so far.

The figure was 92,650 higher than the count on Friday. This is the largest exodus of refugees in Europe since World War II, according to UN refugee agency chief Filippo Grandi. Four million people could leave Ukraine to flee the war, initial UN estimates said, a figure which will likely be revised upwards, according to the UN refugee agency.

Ukraine voiced hope on Saturday for positive results from Israel’s bid to broker peace with Russia, denying a media report that suggested Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had tried to nudge Kyiv into caving in to Moscow’s demands. Bennett, acting at Ukraine’s behest, held a three-hour Kremlin meeting with President Putin last Saturday.

He has since spoken twice with Putin by phone and four times with President Zelensky, officials say. “I believe (Bennett) can play an important role, because Israel is a country with a lot of history and parallels (to our situation), as well as having a large migration of Jews from Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus,” Zelensky said at the briefing.

Earlier on Saturday, a top Ukrainian adviser denied a news report that had suggested Bennett had urged Ukraine to give in to Russia. Israel… “does NOT offer Ukraine to agree to any demands of the Russian Federation”, the adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, tweeted.

“This is impossible for military & political reasons. On the contrary, Israel urges Russia to assess the events more adequately.”

Russian forces, meanwhile, upped pressure on Kyiv on Saturday, pummelling civilian areas in other Ukrainian cities, amid fresh efforts to get aid to the devastated port city of Mariupol. Russian strikes destroyed the airport in the town of Vasylkiv on Saturday morning, about 40 kilometres south of Kyiv, while an oil depot was also hit and caught fire, the mayor said.

46 states confirm participation in OIC moot: FM Qureshi

Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi
Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Saturday said that foreign ministers of 46 Muslim countries had so far confirmed their participation in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) conference.

Addressing the media in Multan, the foreign minister, however, said the number of participating states could increase further. “I humbly request the leaders of all opposition parties to cooperate in holding the OIC meeting and do not disturb it,” he said.

He said the opposition parties should cooperate [with the government] in holding of the OIC meeting as it was being held in Pakistan after a long time. “The state of Pakistan is holding the OIC meeting and it was not the government,” the foreign minister emphasized.

Highlighting the significance of the conference, scheduled to be held in Islamabad on March 22 and 23, Mr Qureshi said the meeting was expected to discuss Afghanistan, Kashmir and Palestine and other international issues including Islamophobia.

Mr Qureshi said Pakistan had issued a balanced statement about the Russia and Ukraine war and they would suggest solving the matter through dialogue.

About the issue of Pakistani students stranded in Ukraine, he said some of them had reached home safely while others who were still trapped there would be transported soon.

He also claimed that a C130 plane would be sent to Ukraine on a humanitarian basis for supply of food and other daily commodities.

Responding to a query regarding the no-confidence move by the opposition against the prime minister, Mr Qureshi believed that no member of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf would sell its vote and he was confident that they would win the no-confidence motion.

When asked about the latest video statement of PTI MNA Ahmad Hassan Dehar regarding his decision on vote of no confidence, the minister said that they would hold a meeting with the MNA and would address his apprehensions.
