PM for NA resolution on BJP leaders’ ‘prophet remarks’

Shehbaz Sharif
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has asked for a resolution by the National Assembly in response to Islamophobic remarks made by the leaders of India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) drawing widespread condemnation.

In a tweet on Saturday, the premier asked the NA speaker to allow the lower house to hold a discussion on the Islamophobic comments on Monday. “We strongly condemn the twaddle by the BJP leader,” he said on Twitter.

The premier said the blasphemous remarks by the far-right Indian politicians hurt the sentiments of over 1 billion Muslims across the world.

Shehbaz said the National Assembly should pass a resolution against the leaders of the ruling party in India and added the resolution will “send a clear message to the world that we are ready to render any sacrifice” for the sake of the sanctity of Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH).

Earlier this month, Senate had passed a unanimous resolution against these remarks. PPP Senator Saleem Mandviwalla had tabled the resolution. The Senate had expressed its strong commitment to defending the dignity of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) at national, regional, and international fora.

Like Pakistan, the rest of the Muslim world also condemned India and sought action against the individuals who made such blasphemous comments.

Furthermore, the controversy has strained India’s relationship with the Gulf countries, which are outraged by the insulting remarks. Some Arab countries have called for a boycott of Indian products.

Meanwhile, India is struggling to control the damage and countries like Qatar are seeking a public apology over the incident.

The ruling BJP suspended its spokeswoman Nupur Sharma and expelled Delhi media cell head Naveen Kumar Jindal and issued directions to the party leaders to refrain from making remarks that would hurt the religious sentiments of people.

Country going through turbulent times, say Miftah

Miftah
A day after the government presented a Rs9.5 trillion inflationary budget, Finance Minister Miftah Ismail Saturday said the target of next year's budget is fiscal consolidation and providing relief to the masses.

The finance minister said the country was going through a "very difficult" and unprecedented period. The minister, addressing the media alongside Minister of State Ayesha Ghous Pasha and Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, said the government understands that this is a difficult period and "we have tried to reduce the burden on the poor and take more from the rich".

Referring to the budget presented a day earlier, Miftah maintained that the government has tried to tighten the fiscal policy and reduce the overall deficit. He said that taxes have been increased on Pakistani citizens who possess foreign assets along with new taxes on property.

Elaborating further, he said that the budget of the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) has been increased by 35-40pc. He added that flour, sugar and ghee will be provided at discounted rates at Utility Stores throughout the year. The finance minister also said the government has taken difficult decisions keeping in view the interest of the country.

The finance minister added that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) wanted higher income tax rates but the government has tried to reduce the tax.

Referring to the tax collection target, he said over Rs700 billion has been set for the next fiscal year while the non-tax revenue target has been set at Rs2,000 billion and debt servicing has been estimated at  Rs3,950 billion.

Alluding to the soaring prices of palm oil in the international market, Miftah said a package of Rs20 billion has been given to promote the cultivation of oil seeds and added that special emphasis is being given to bolster exports, expressing confidence that exports will touch the $35 billion mark in the next fiscal year.

In response to a question regarding the feasibility of inflation and growth targets, Miftah stated “we have targets of growth and inflation but our first priority is fiscal consolidation and reducing the burden on the masses."

Answering another question regarding a revised award by the National Finance Commission (NFC), Miftah stated that the commission must sit and discuss a new award. “KP’s population has grown since the incorporation of FATA and their allocation should reflect that.”

Minister of State Ayesha Ghous Pasha said during the media briefing that the incumbent government inherited a "difficult situation", but the country needs to focus on growth.

She added that the government has regulated and subsidised the prices of wheat, sugar and ghee and the government has also given relief to the farmers.

Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shahbaz appeared before special court in Lahore

Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shahbaz appeared before special court in Lahore
Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif and Chief Minister Punjab Hamza Shahbaz appeared before special court in Lahore on Saturday for the hearing of money laundering case through Sugar Mills.

The father-son duo pleaded for the pre-arrest bail in the the money laundering case.

While speaking on rostrum, PM Shehbaz said, "It is my right to inform the court about facts regarding my bail. No case of corruption has been proved against me. Several cases have been made against and have been appeared before court several times because of them."

The prime minister said that FIA and NAB filed the same case against him. PM Shahbaz said he was booked in Ashiana Housing and Ramzan Sugar Mills cases.

At this, the judge asked, “Did you not have any share in them?”

“I have no share in Ashiana Housing and Ramzan Sugar Mills,” replied the prime minister. He added, “Neither I am the director of the Ramzan Sugar Mills, nor owner or shareholder.”

Giving details about the cases registered against him, PM Shahbaz said charges of abuse of powers were levelled against him in the Ashiana Housing case. He maintained that the LHC had given its ruling in the case. Later, the NAB moved the apex court against him. The NAB fled when the Supreme Court sought proof of corruption against him from the NAB.

“When I was in NAB’s custody, FIA officials visited him twice,” he said, adding that he verbally provided all the details to them.

The prime minister said that cases against him were decided on merit and he was released. “Why FIA is not reprimanded for not submitting challan?” asked the prime minister.

PM Shahbaz said that it seems that FIA was using delaying tactics to arrest him.

He said that the cases against me are false and baseless. "I have told FIA that i will not submit any answer verbally and will answer after consulting my lawyers."

In December 2021, the FIA had submitted the challan against Shehbaz and Hamza before the special court for their alleged involvement in laundering an amount of Rs16 billion in the sugar scam case.

After the hearing, the court reserved the verdict regarding the plea of extension of PM Shehbaz and CM Hamza’s pre-arrest bails.

Kane Williamson tested positive for COVID-19

Kane Williamson
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson was ruled out of the second Test against England in Nottingham on Friday, after testing positive for COVID-19 on the eve of the match.

Williamson undertook a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) after experiencing minor symptoms during the day and will now begin five days of isolation, coach Gary Stead said.

Tests of the rest of the New Zealand squad returned negative.

The loss of batting mainstay Williamson is a severe blow for New Zealand who are desperate to keep the three-Test series alive after losing the first match by five wickets.

Stead confirmed opener Tom Latham will take over as captain and Hamish Rutherford has been called into the squad as Williamson’s replacement.

"It’s such a shame for Kane to be forced to withdraw on the eve of such an important match," Stead said.

"We’re all feeling for him at this time and know how disappointed he will be."

Rutherford, who last played Test cricket seven years ago, is already in England playing Twenty20 cricket for the Leicestershire Foxes.

Government would succeed in overcoming the economic challenges:Shahid Khaqan

Shahid Khaqan
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader and former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Thursday said the coalition government would succeed in overcoming the economic challenges faced by the country due to bad governance under the PTI’s regime.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Inasf (PTI) government for violating the agreement it had signed with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He said IMF had set some targets for Pakistan which would eventually stabilize the national economy. However, there was a need to increase the income to ease burden of the people amid the inflation, he said, adding it would be the biggest challenge for the current government.

The PML-N leader hinted at a relief package for the salaried class in the coming 2022-23 budget. He also reposed full confidence in Finance Minister Miftah Ismail who, he said, would steer the country out of current economic crises.

IMF, Pakistan hold crucial talks ahead of budget

IMF
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Pakistan discussed Wednesday key aspects of bailout package during a virtual meeting, it was revealed.

Pakistan and the IMF held a virtual meeting on Wednesday night, during which the Pakistani side revealed key aspects of the upcoming budget for 2022–23. Major preceding initiatives, including taxing reforms, are expected to bring in Rs7.255 trillion in the upcoming fiscal year, according to the IMF.

At the time of the completion of the sixth review under the PTI-led government in February 2022, the reform of personal income tax was a structural benchmark of the IMF programme. PIT reforms will be implemented in the fiscal year 2023 budget, it was agreed.

However, if the government deviates from PIT reforms now, it would have to devise a new strategy to bring revenues up to the desired level in the following budget.

The IMF has also asked about alternative plans to meet the Federal Board of Revenue's (FBR) envisaged target of Rs7.255 trillion in the coming budget. The IMF has estimated that the FBR’s collection would be standing at Rs6,000 billion for the outgoing fiscal year and the FBR would have to collect Rs1,255 billion to meet the desired target in the next fiscal year.

With nominal growth of 16.5%, the FBR’s collection would touch Rs6,700 billion, so the IMF is inquiring about the plan for collecting the remaining Rs550 billion to touch the revenue collection of Rs7,255 billion for the next financial year.

The IMF staff pointed out that the FBR’s collection of Rs6,000 billion also possessed general sales tax (GST) on petroleum products to the tune of Rs300 billion till November 2021, so keeping in view the existing prices, Rs300 billion should also be excluded from the purview of the FBR. The non-tax revenue target has been envisaged at Rs2,000 billion.

On the expenditure side, the debt servicing has been envisaged at Rs4,000 to Rs4,200 billion for the next budget. The defence allocation has proposed Rs1,523 billion and a development budget of Rs800 billion, including Rs730 billion and a PPP mode of Rs70 billion for the next budget.

Pakistan and the IMF discussed the proposed increase in electricity tariffs, subsidies on price of petroleum products, and the expected budget deficit for the coming financial year 2022-23. The government has envisaged Rs578 billion for subsidies on electricity as Rs500 billion subsidies proposed for FY23, RLNG to get Rs20 billion subsidies and Rs50 billion subsidies for the industrial sector.

Pakistan and the IMF remained engaged on one of the toughest rounds of parleys for finalising budgetary figures for the upcoming budget amid lingering severe macroeconomic and fiscal crisis being faced by the country. This crisis-like situation aggravated owing to sky rocketing petroleum product prices and commodities prices in the international market.

The government is providing a subsidy of around Rs9 per litre on petrol and Rs23 billion per litre on diesel on the basis of calculation of oil prices in international market standing at $107 per barrel. Now the petroleum product prices in international market stands at $122 per barrel so the cost of subsidy is all set to further go up by $15 per barrel in line with new estimates for requirements in the coming financial year.

US likely to pass key bill regarding tech firms

Tech giants
US Senator Amy Klobuchar and lawmakers from both parties said on Wednesday they had the Senate votes needed to pass legislation aimed at reining in the four tech giants, Meta's Facebook, Apple, Alphabet's Google and Amazon.com, and urged a vote be taken.

Versions of the bill before the House and Senate would bar the companies from favoring their own businesses in search results and other ways.

"We wouldn't be asking for a vote if we didn't think we could get 60 votes," said Klobuchar, who was flanked by Senator Chuck Grassley, a Republican who backs the bill, and House sponsors Representative David Cicilline, a Democrat, and Ken Buck, a Republican.

In the Senate, bills generally need support from 60 senators to cut off debate and move to a vote on final passage.

Amazon.com, the Chamber of Commerce and others took aim at the proposal last week.

The Senate is expected to vote on the bill this summer, perhaps as early as late June, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The House is then expected to vote on the Senate version, sources said.

"This bill has to pass in June," said Buck. Grassley said: "We need a Senate vote. And we need that Senate vote to be soon."

The tech giants have said the bill would imperil popular consumer products like Google Maps and Amazon Basics and make it harder for the companies to protect their users' security and privacy.

Cicilline, who said he expected a House vote "very soon," disagreed with the companies' criticism of it.

"This bill will not prevent Amazon from providing free shipping or other services to its Prime members. But it will prohibit Amazon from misleading customers by rigging search results and cheating its sellers by stealing their nonpublic product information," he said.

Netizens hail driver who sped away burning oil tanker to save lives

Heroic act
Scores of people on social media are praising the heroic act of a driver from Quetta who upon seeing fire erupting in an oil tanker drove it away from a populous neighborhood to save lives.

In what seemed like a scene from a movie flick, Muhammad Faisal drove off his vehicle when it caught fire at a petrol pump located on the aforesaid road.

"I thought now the oil tanker will explode and I will die," Faisal said as the video of him driving through fire went viral on media.

Recalling the horrifying moments, he said: "When I saw the fire I rushed to drive away despite the roaring flames."

As the people saw thick black smoke rising from the tanker and flames they started to shout, pleading to the driver to stop it.

"My primary concern was to save human lives," the determined tanker driver said who chose to put his life at great risk driving the burning vehicle for around two kilometres.

Admitting that it was nonetheless a horrifying moment, the brave driver said: "I thought I would die but I was concerned about the population."

He further explained that every time he would decide to stop, he would see some more people nearby and it would compel him to continue moving. "I was mentally prepared for my death," Faisal said.

What made the incident scarier and more threatening for the driver is it contained more than 10,000 litres of petrol.

Faisal's efforts finally bore fruit as scores rushed towards the vehicle once it was stopped and managed to extinguish the flames.

"The provincial government should announce a special prize for this brave driver," Afaq Ahmed, a resident near Qambrani road, said.

He urged Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Quddus Bizenjo to announce a special prize for the man who saved precious human lives.

Google to pay $100m for violating data protection act

Google has agreed to pay $100 million to Illinois residents for violating the state’s Biometric Information Protection Act (BIPA) through ‘Face Grouping’ feature.

Residents of the state can claim $200 and $400 if they appeared in a picture between May 1st, 2015 and April 25th, 2022. By allegedly collecting and analysing faces without informed consent of the individual, and sharing data retention policies with the public, the company violated privacy concerns.

In a report by The Verge, Google defended the feature emphasizing that the collected faces of individuals grouped together automatically were only visible to the user and can be disabled.

In 2021, Facebook had to pay $650 million as a settlement for its lawsuit over face-based Tag Suggestions. Snapchat is also dealing with a lawsuit of its illegal collection of face and voice data for its AR effects.

Russia aims to tighten ‘foreign agents’ law

Russia’s parliament
The lower house of Russia’s parliament has given initial approval to a bill further tightening the country’s laws against “foreign agents”, at a time when President Vladimir Putin has warned the Russian people to look out for “traitors”.

Russia’s first law on foreign agents was adopted in 2012. It has since been expanded to include non-profit organisations, media outlets, and individual Russian citizens including journalists and activists.

The bill, passed on Tuesday by 346 votes to 17 at its first of three readings, states that any person who receives financial or any other kind of support from abroad can be designated a foreign agent.

The law reflects a climate of hostility and distrust of the West that has intensified since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, leading to Moscow being hit by a wave of Western sanctions.

In a speech to the State Duma the bill’s co-author, Andrei Lugovoy, accused various unnamed Russian public figures of having received “special training” in the United Kingdom, which he accused of seeking to destroy Russia from within.

“What tasks are they set? What papers do they sign? We need to look into this in detail,” Lugovoy said.

The bill also introduces a new category of “persons affiliated with a foreign agent”. Lugovoy previously said this category could include relatives of foreign agents or others who helped them carry out their activities.

The “foreign agent” term, which carries Cold War connotations of espionage, is used by Russia as a hostile label for people and organisations it deems to be engaging in political activity with foreign support.

Israel wants complete occupation of Palestine: UN report

 Ilegal occupation
An independent commission of inquiry set up by the UN Human Rights Council after the 2021 Israeli assault on the besieged Gaza Strip said Israel must do more than end the occupation of land that Palestinian leaders want for a future state.

“Ending the occupation alone will not be sufficient,” according to the report released on Tuesday, urging that additional action be taken to ensure the equal enjoyment of human rights for Palestinians.

The report cites evidence that Israel has “no intention of ending the occupation”.

Israel is pursuing “complete control” over what the report calls the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, which was taken by Israel in a 1967 war and later annexed in a move never recognised by the international community.

The Israeli government, the commission said, has been “acting to alter the demography through the maintenance of a repressive environment for Palestinians and a favourable environment for Israeli settlers”.

Citing an Israeli law denying naturalisation to Palestinians married to Israeli citizens, the report accuses Israel of affording “different civil status, rights and legal protection” for Palestinian citizens of Israel.

More than 700,000 Israeli settlers now live in settlements and outposts across the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which is home to more than three million Palestinians. The Israeli settlements are fortified, Jewish-only housing complexes that are considered illegal under international law.

Leading human rights groups, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have equated Israeli policies against Palestinians to apartheid.
The UN inquiry and report was prompted by the 11-day Israeli military offensive in May 2021 during which more than 260 Palestinians in Gaza were killed, and 13 people died in Israel.

In May 2021, Hamas fired rockets towards Israel after Israeli forces cracked down on Palestinian worshippers in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound – Islam’s third holiest site – where dozens were injured and detained. It also followed an Israeli court decision to forcibly expel Palestinian families from Sheikh Jarrah, a neighbourhood in East Jerusalem.

Without political stability, there can be no economic stability: PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Tuesday addressed a day-long pre-budget business conference in the federal capital and said that the country's economy cannot be streamlined without political stability.

The conference was being held to explore avenues for consensus-based economic measures with all stakeholders on board. It brought together leaders from a wide range of industries on a single platform for a vibrant and interactive debate, in line with the prime minister's vision of the "Charter of Economy" and an inclusive economic policy-making approach.

The prime minister said since Pakistan’s inception 75 years back, the economic development in the initial 25 years and the economic development after that have a “stark” difference.

PM Shehbaz said Pakistan’s five-year development programmes were made by top-tier professionals, which allowed the country to progress and Islamabad was way ahead of other nations in the region.

“In the 1990s, the Pakistani rupee had better value than the Indian rupee. Pakistan also showed (India) how can we run the economy on modern lines; we liberalised Pakistan’s economy and India copied it,” he said.

PM Shehbaz added there were suggestions put forth by the conference’s participants, but "we should not limit ourselves to proposals and move ahead and implement them."

“But it is important to note that without political stability, there can be no economic stability, and vice versa,” he said, stressing the need for a “Charter of Economy”, which would lead to long-term stability.

“No matter what happens, whichever party comes into power, the goals set in the ‘Charter of Economy’ will remain unchanged. It will become our sacred trust, which will not change,” the prime minister said, adding: “We need this.”

Moving on, the prime minister said there was a need to develop rural areas as when people travel from underdeveloped to developed cities, they become a burden on the resources of that place.

“The rural areas, which comprise 65% of Pakistan’s population, should be developed. This can only happen when our children get quality education there,” the prime minister noted.

He added that there was a need to increase the agricultural yield through modern technology as it could change the fate of Pakistan, which would later be exported and help the national exchequer.

PM Shehbaz said following the 18th amendment, the provinces were empowered and the federation's powers were curbed. But he noted that the provinces and the Centre would have to work together to develop a comprehensive plan.

"For that, I will need your (businessmen's) help. I am not saying this for a mere speech. No, we are forming a task force but I will not go into details of it now," he said

Comparing the country's IT industry with that of India's, the prime minister said that the latter generates around $200 billion while Pakistan's industry was hovering around $2.5 billion. "We must go for special export industrial zones," he added.

The PM said that the government will make well-structured industrial zones. "To increase the export, the developed zone should be handed over to the investors to work on it. We need to fix ambitious targets."

Talking about the tough decisions being taken by the government, PM Shehbaz said that the non-productive assets should be taxed. "The windfall profits in the real estate should be taxed," he said.

Footage shows what it looks like to be hit by a missile

Missile hits drone
Incredible PoV footage has shown what it looks like to be hit by a missile after Russia blasted a Ukrainian drone out of the sky.

The stealth device had been on a special mission to destroy Russian fuel and weapons depots when it was struck down by one of Mad Vlad's troops.

The stealth plane was hovering over an open field when at a distance a white plume of smoke arises.

The rocket swerves and turns as it hones in on the drone, blasting it out of the sky and causing the recording to cut out.

Despite the loss, Ukraine's 45th Separate Artillery Brigade, which carried out the attack, said it was successful in its attack on the Russian depot.

The brigade said in a statement on Saturday that they used two drones to carry out the strike, with one being struck down by the enemy in return fire.

Elon Musk threatened Monday to withdraw his bid to buy Twitter, accusing it of failing to provide data on fake accounts, in the latest twist in the Tesla billionaire’s push to acquire the social network.

Twitter has committed “a clear material breach” of its “obligations under the merger agreement and Mr Musk reserves ... his right not to consummate the transaction,” according to a document filed with securities regulators.

The filing marks an escalation of Musk’s prior statements that have highlighted fake accounts as a threat to his proposed $44 billion deal to take over Twitter.

The mercurial Musk agreed a deal in late April to purchase Twitter.

But the proposed sale has stoked protest from critics who warn his stewardship will embolden hate groups and disinformation campaigns.

US securities regulators have also pressed Musk for an explanation of an apparent delay in reporting his Twitter stock buys.

Musk began making significant noise about fake accounts in mid-May, saying on Twitter he could walk away from the transaction if his concerns were not addressed.

Some observers have seen Musk’s questioning of Twitter bots as a means to end the takeover process, or to pressure Twitter into lowering the price.

Musk’s latest statement on bots signifies he is “looking to walk away from deal,” Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said Monday on Twitter, noting that there is a $1 billion breakup fee in the Twitter-Musk transaction.

“We continue to believe that Elon is playing hard ball... to gain leverage/options to either reduce his offer price or indeed completely walk away if he gets cold feet,” said CFRA Research’s Angelo Zino.

Twitter on Monday defended its responsiveness, and vowed to complete the deal.

“Twitter has and will continue to cooperatively share information with Mr Musk,” a spokesperson said. “We intend to close the transaction and enforce the merger agreement at the agreed price and terms.”

British PM wins confidence vote, faces rebellion

Boris Johnson
Despite surviving a confidence vote, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced rebellion by 148 of his 359 Conservative Party lawmakers which has dealt a serious blow to his authority.

A majority of the Conservatives' lawmakers — at least 180 — would have had to vote against Johnson for him to be removed.

The result means Johnson secured the backing of 59% of his lawmakers, lower than the support given to his predecessor Theresa May in a confidence vote she faced in 2018.

Having scored a sweeping election victory in 2019, the prime minister has been under mounting pressure after he and staff held alcohol-fuelled parties in his Downing Street office and residence when Britain was under strict COVID-19 lockdowns.

Such is the anger that the party triggered a challenge, forcing an anonymous vote of confidence in a leader who had once seemed unassailable.

The move led to lawmakers from different wings of the party revealing that they had turned against their leader. One former ally accused the prime minister of insulting both the electorate and the party by staying in power.

You have presided over a culture of casual law-breaking at 10 Downing Street in relation to COVID," Jesse Norman, a former junior minister, said before the vote.

Johnson's anti-corruption chief John Penrose also quit.

Dozens of Conservative lawmakers have voiced concern that Johnson, 57, could be losing his authority to govern Britain, which is facing the risk of recession, rising fuel and food prices and strike-inflicted travel chaos in the capital London.

Shezad Akbar calls corruption accusations against him as "baseless"

Former adviser to the prime minister Shahzad Akbar
Former adviser to the prime minister Shahzad Akbar Monday denied the allegations of corruption levelled against him and issued a clarification, saying that the news published against him by a news agency was "baseless".

Taking to Twitter, Akbar wrote: "A baseless news regarding me which does not make any sense has been published by a news agency."

He also requested media organisations to stop publishing the news and warned of legal action against those who failed to comply.

Earlier, a news agency alleged that Akbar had formed a group and bought properties worth "billions of rupees" under the garb of making the accountability process better.

The news agency also alleged that Akbar "misused government's resources and officials, hoarded money, and disappeared."

Loadshedding to be reduced to 3.5 hours from tomorrow: Abbasi

PML-N leaders
PML-N leader and former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said on Monday that the duration of loadshedding would be reduced to three-and-a-half hours from tomorrow (Tuesday).

He made the announcement while addressing a press conference alongside State Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik, Minister for Power Khurram Dastgir Khan and Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.

Abbasi began the press conference by presenting the reasons for the energy shortfall, holding the former government responsible. The country's electricity demand has exceeded 25,000MW during the summer, he said.

He highlighted that when the current government assumed charge, the electricity generation capacity was at 17,000MW which was increased to more than 21,000MW over the past three weeks.

He went on to say that the government and cabinet were sorry for the current loadshedding but asked for time to resolve the existing issues.

"Today, we are producing 21,000MW which means we have a shortfall of 4,000MW," he said, adding that this translated into a little more than four hours of loadshedding to fill the supply and demand gap.

We have decided that from tomorrow (Tuesday) we will reduce loadshedding to three-and-a-half hours, he said, adding that additional money had been paid while oil had also been arranged to ensure this. "We are hopeful that by tomorrow loadshedding will be reduced to 3.5 hours."

In the next phase when coal is imported, the duration of loadshedding will further reduce by June 16, he said. "By June 30, the duration will be less than two hours, close to an hour-and-a-half."

He expressed the hope that the government would be able to reduce this further during the month of July.

The PML-N leader further said that the government was not interested in making excuses and was focused on fixing the issues plaguing the country.

He lashed out at the former government for the lies it told regarding establishing power plants, saying that Pakistan was unable to fulfil its electricity demand for the summer.

The press conference comes days after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed authorities to come up with an "emergency plan" within 24 hours that was aimed at reducing electricity loadshedding.

He had issued the directives while presiding over a meeting on Saturday. The meeting came amid reports about hours-long loadshedding in various parts of the country, leaving the people to suffer in high temperatures.

The meeting which lasted five hours reviewed the loadshedding situation in the country and discussed measures to reduce the electricity shortfall.

Over the weekend, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had suggested the nation take advantage of "365 days of sunshine" and operate markets in the daytime as opposed to the convention of "opening markets at 1pm and closing them at 1am".

"Our markets open at 1pm and close at 1am. This [practice] is found nowhere in the world," Asif had tweeted late Saturday night. "God has given our country 365 days of sunshine and yet we turn on the lights in the dark to do business."

If markets set the right business hours then — with Karachi excluded — 3,500MW of electricity can be saved. "Tough circumstances call for tough decisions," he had said.

KP forest fires continue to rage

KP forest fires
Forest fires that erupted in various parts Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) continued raging as firemen struggled to bring them under control.

Fires have inflicted widespread damage on the indigenous flora and fauna in the region.

They were able to extinguish wildfires in at least nine locations in district Swat including Sigram, Baglo, Berrari, Babuzai, Barikot, Kokarai Minogora, Kot Charbagh, Chatmalai and Devial, Kabal.

“Most fires in district Swat have been extinguished while 60 per cent fire in Kabal has been put out and firefighters are still trying their best,” said an official of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) while talking to The Express Tribune, adding that there was no loss of life or property in these forest fires.

“Fire in the famous Elum mountain in Buner has also been brought under control which continued for at least four days. These fires occur almost annually,” said a local resident of Buner, adding that most of the time local people themselves start these fires in order to have good grass next season.

“I see these fires each year. Some are caused by thunders but most of the time local residents start these fires so that they have better vegetation next year for their cattle,” he said, adding that people often burn waste on a large scale in the mountains which causes uncontrolled wildfires.

On Saturday four people were burnt alive when forest fire engulfed a house in Shangla district of K-P.

As per the PDMA report a man, woman and two children have lost their lives. They are from one family who were unable to escape.

PDMA has already established a control room which could be contacted in case of emergency.

Real estate baron Malik Riaz rubbishes ‘fake audio’

Malik Riaz
Real estate tycoon Malik Riaz has said that the audio clip attributed to him was fake.

“The audio attributed to me on the social media is the product of this [deep-fake] technology,” Riaz said in a statement. “I do not want to be involved in the campaign of any political party but it is a fact that my voice was misused for political gain,” he added.

“I have been attacked repeatedly, now my family is also targeted. I intend to initiate legal proceedings in this matter and I will approach every legal forum to track down the people behind this conspiracy,” he said.

Riaz’s statement came after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders played an audio tape — purportedly a conversation between the Bahria Town chief and his daughter – revealing how Farah Gogi 'demanded a gift' for former first lady Bushra Bibi.

During the conversation, the woman in the audio clip was saying to her father that Farah allegedly demanded a precious diamond as a gift for the ex-first lady in return for "removing locks" on a project site and withdrawing a report against her father.

Riaz said that the audio clip was fake and that he would approach every legal forum to track down the people behind this conspiracy. “Whoever is involved in this will be taken to task,” he added.

Addressing a news conference, PML-N leader Attaullah Tarar alongside his party colleague Uzma Bukhari claimed that the troika of former premier Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and her friend Farhat Shahzadi alias Farah Gogi made "billions" during the tenure of the PTI government.

“It started in 2019, when Imran Khan gave a relief worth Rs320 million to Ahsan Jamil Gujjar – Farah’s husband – under an amnesty scheme," Tarar said.

He added that the former PM gave the relief due to his personal relations and friendship between Bushra and Farah.

Tarar alleged that Imran and his family continued to remain in corrupt practices throughout the PTI's tenure.

"Commission and kickbacks were given while new records of corruption were made during the PTI's tenure."

He said that Farah used Bushra’s influence for appointments and transfers in Punjab. He added that Farah and her husband now owned assets worth Rs10 billion.

"The assets that were in millions are now in billions. They should tell the poor Pakistani people [how they did it] so that they could also use their [the couple’s] knowledge to come out of poverty.”

Govt likely to jack up officials' salaries

Budget
The incumbent government is planing to jack up salaries of government employees by 5-15% in the upcoming budget, it has been learnt.

The Finance Division issued a notification to announce the grant of another extension to the Pay and Pension Commission, according to which the timelines for the submission of the Commission's recommendation have been extended till June 30, 2022.

Acording to media reports, the former PTI-led government had granted a disparity reduction allowance of 15% for the officials posted from grade 1 to 19, with effect from March 1, 2022. However, the new PM Shehbaz Sharif-led government announced another 10% raise in the pension and increased the minimum pay to 25,000 per month.

With this background, the Finance Ministry official said that the government was working on three different options for jacking up salaries up to 5%, 10%, and 15%. The salaries of grade 1 to 19 might be increased as another 5-10% adhoc allowance in the upcoming budget.

The salaries of grade 20 to 22 employees might be increased 10-15%.

Besides, the government may increase pensions by 5-10% in the wake of rising inflationary pressures. The Ministry of Finance’s Regulation Wing has completed its internal work and decided to hire an actuary to do the spadework.

It was also decided to constitute a Pay and Pension Commission to get its recommendations as well.

Alledged audio call leaked between Malik Riaz and his daughter opens a new pandora's box

Alledged audio call leaked between Malik Riaz and his daughter opens a new pandora's box
Punjab government spokesman Ataullah Tarar Sunday revealed an alleged audio recording of a conversation between property tycoon Malik Riaz and his daughter Amber Riaz in which the two could be heard discussing how the former first lady Bushra Bibi refused to accept a three-carat diamond ring from them.

The audio was brought to the fore by Tarar and PML-N Secretary Information Azma Bukhari during a press conference in Lahore today.

In the alleged audio, Amber could be heard telling her father — who enjoys congenial relations with all Pakistani politicians — that she had sent the then-first lady a three-carat diamond ring which she had refused to accept.

Without mentioning Farah Gogi's name in the audio, Amber said that she had a meeting with "her" (Farah) on Saturday, therefore, a five-carat diamond ring should be arranged for Bushra Bibi before that, adding that the ring would cost Rs10 million.

Amber further told her father that she (Farah) had told her that it was "no big deal for the first lady to own a three-carat ring, therefore, it was "unbecoming of them to send her something that everybody could own."

Upon hearing that, Malik Riaz could be heard telling his daughter "to get the ring that they (the first lady and Gogi) were demanding."

During the call, Amber could also be heard telling her father that the "locked doors to his sites will be opened the next morning", adding that "she" (Farah) had assured her that she received a call from Imran Khan.

"She (Farah) told me that she had received a phone call from Khan Sahab and said that he would take guarantee for the closure of the [cases] for which the reports have been submitted to him. You will also get a letter from Shahzad Akbar tomorrow," Amber could be heard telling her father.

Pakistan calls international community to take action on Islamophobia situation in India

Pakistan calls international community to take action on Islamophobia situation in India
Pakistan has condemned — in the strongest possible terms — the highly derogatory remarks recently made by two senior officials of India’s ruling party BJP, disrespecting the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

"These totally unacceptable remarks have not only deeply hurt the sentiments of the people of Pakistan but of billions of Muslims around the world," a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sunday.

"BJP’s attempted clarification and belated and perfunctory disciplinary action against these individuals cannot assuage the pain and anguish they have caused to the Muslim world."

Muslims residing in India are equally outraged by the completely repugnant comments by the two BJP officials. The ensuing communal violence in Kanpur and in other parts of India bears testimony to this fact.

Pakistan is also deeply concerned about the alarming rise in communal violence and hatred directed against the Muslims in India. Muslims in India are being systematically stigmatised, marginalised and subjected to a well-orchestrated onslaught from radical Hindu mobs with full connivance and support of the security apparatus across various states in India.

"Regrettably, the Indian state machinery has remained aloof to the desperate calls for assistance by the local Muslim communities across the country," the statement said.

The continued grave violations of the rights of minorities in several BJP-ruled states; anti-Muslim legislation by the Union government of India and continued incidents of violence against Muslims on flimsy pretexts by various "Hindutva" groups with complete impunity, and often under state patronage, highlight the worsening trend of Islamophobia and extremism in India.

"The silence of the top leadership of the BJP is yet another proof that these Hindu zealots have the tacit support of the state machinery in carrying out their nefarious designs of marginalisation and dehumanising of the minorities, especially Muslims," it said.

Reprehensibly, it has become a norm in India to deprive Muslims of their right to live and freely practice their religion. It is deplorable that the BJP-RSS cohort, under the extremist "Hindutva" agenda, has maliciously denigrated and perpetrated senseless violence against Indian Muslims and their places of worship.

"Pakistan urges India to ensure that decisive and demonstrable action is taken against those responsible for making derogatory remarks and attacking the dignity of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). India must also take immediate steps to protect its minorities from human rights violations, ensure their safety, security and well-being and allow them to profess and practise their faiths in peace."

Pakistan once again calls on the international community to take immediate cognizance of the grievously aggravating situation of Islamophobia in India. India must be held accountable for stifling the rights of the minorities, especially Muslims to practice their faith and religious beliefs.

The international community must dissuade India from its reprehensible campaign of “saffronisation” and ensure that Muslims are not victimised for having different religious beliefs than the majority population. The world must intervene to protect the Muslims in India from an impending genocide at the hands of Hindutva-inspired Hindu zealots, emboldened by the BJP-RSS dispensation at the helm, the statement said.

Taking to Twitter to condemn the incident, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif wrote: "Have said it repeatedly India under Modi is trampling religious freedoms and persecuting Muslims. The world should take note & severely reprimand India."

He added that Muslims' love for the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is supreme and that all Muslims can sacrifice their life for the love and respect of their prophet.

Instagram to help find missing children with AMBER alerts

AMBER alerts
Meta owned social media platform Instagram has introduced a new feature called 'Amber Alert' to help find missing children in the user's region.

The feature has been launched in the United States and in other countries.

The alerts will include details of the missing child, including their picture, description and location of the suspected abduction. The alert is designed to be shared by users to help raise awareness so the missing children can be found with the power of social media.

The director of trust and safety at Meta, Emily Vacher, says "We know that the chances of finding a missing child increase when more people are on the lookout, especially in the first few hours. With this update, if an Amber Alert is activated by law enforcement and you are in the designated search area, the alert will now appear in your Instagram feed."

Vacher said in her blog that the alerts were "rare and specific to the search area" and if users get an alert through Instagram it means there already is an ongoing active search to find the missing child.

Facebook launched Amber Alert in 2015, while Google rolled out the Search and Maps tools in 2012, similar to Amber Alerts.

Instagram intends on using the user's city, IP address and location services to ensure the alerts are targeted correctly.

The update was developed in partnership with National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Michelle DeLaune, president and CEO at the centre said, "We know that photos are a critical tool in the search for missing children and by expanding the reach to the Instagram audience, we'll be able to share photos of missing children with so many more people."

Dua Zahra recovered from Punjab’s Bahawalnagar

Dua Zahra recovered from Punjab’s Bahawalnagar
In a major development, the Punjab police have finally recovered Dua Zahra — the 14-year-old girl who had mysteriously gone missing from Karachi in April but later declared that she had run away from her home to marry 21-year-old Zaheer Ahmed — from the Chishtian area of Bahawalnagar, it emerged Sunday.

Confirming the report, Anti-Violent Crime Cell SSP Zubair Nazir Sheikh said that Dua Zahra and her husband Zaheer Ahmed have been taken into protective custody. He maintained that the couple will be brought to Karachi after completion of legal formalities.

The couple was recovered from a lawyer’s house by the CIA police.

Dua has been recovered after over one-and-half months since going missing from Karachi.

In a bid to put pressure, the Karachi police have already taken all the family members of Zaheer Ahmed into its custody.

Earlier, Dua Zahra’s family had lodged a report about her abduction on April 16, however, she later revealed on the internet that she had tied the knot with Zaheer Ahmed.

On May 30, the Sindh High Court (SHC) had directed the Establishment Division to take back charge from Sindh Inspector-General of police (IGP) Kamran Fazal over his failure in producing Dua Zahra before the court.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro resumed the hearing of a petition filed by Mehdi Ali Kazmi, the girl’s father.

Reprimanding the police officer over their failure in recovering Dua Zahra — the 14-year-old girl who had mysteriously gone missing from Karachi in April but later declared that she had run away from her home to marry 21-year-old Zaheer Ahmed — the judge sought the opinion of the Establishment Division whether Kamran Fazal is eligible for this post or not.

“It will be better to leave the matter for the executive to decide,” observed the judge.

Rejecting the IG Sindh’s report, the judge remarked that the police officer submitted an unrealistic report in the case.

The SHC directed the authorities concerned to assign an "efficient" officer to the post and issued a show-cause notice to Fazal on his "unwillingness" to perform in the case.

It is worth mentioning that on May 18, the Sindh government had appointed Dr Kamran Fazal as Sindh police chief — an officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (BS-21) — after sacking Mushtaq Mahar from the post.

“In a manifest demonstration of such callous conduct, the court directed the IG Sindh to intervene and recover the child. On 24.05.2022, the IG appeared in court and submitted a rather fanciful story that a mobile signal, allegedly of one of the abductors, was being monitored across the length and breadth of the country, traversing through Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir, however, other than that no effort whatsoever was taken to find/recover the child,” the court order read.

It further noted that despite it being apparent that no serious effort had been expended to recover the child, this court exercised restraint and accepted the IG’s undertaking that the child would be recovered before the next date.

“It remains our tentative assessment that the IG Police, Kamran Fazal, remains unwilling to perform his duty, despite repeated direct orders,” it noted.

The court asked Fazal for an explanation on why the proceeding may not be initiated. The SHC also directed Fazal to appear before the court in person along with his affidavit at the next hearing.

“In so far as his ability to perform his duty is concerned, we feel it’s prudent to defer the said issue for due consideration to the executive. The Secretary Establishment Division is directed to immediately look into this matter and form an opinion, within a reasonable time, as to whether there ought to be an inquiry to determine whether Kamran Fazal is fit to hold a position of responsibility concerned with the lives and liberty of citizens,” the order read.

Meanwhile, the court said that the present role/charge of the IG Sindh may be assigned forthwith to an “efficient” officer and the officer would be conveyed the court’s directions to produce the missing child on the next date of hearing.

SHC directs interior ministry to help recover Zahra

On May 25, the SHC had directed the federal interior secretary to issue directions to all the relevant law enforcement agencies to extend cooperation with the Sindh police for the recovery of Dua Zahra, an alleged underage girl who went missing from Karachi last month and later found to have married a man in Punjab.

Hearing a petition for the recovery of Dua and cancellation of her marriage under the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act filed by her father, a division bench of the SHC headed by Justice Mohammad Iqbal Kalhoro asked the Sindh police chief why the missing girl had not been traced and produced despite court directions.

The IGP submitted that Dua and her spouse were recently located in Balakot, Mansehra, but when police teams went to Balakot, the couple had already left and now their location had been traced in Azad Kashmir.

The IGP and Criminal Investigation Agency DIG also filed a progress report with regard to the recovery of Dua. The high court observed that despite repeated directions of the court, no compliance had been made out and as per the mobile phone signals of the girl’s ‘spouse’, the police chased them sometime in Punjab and sometime in KP as well as Azad Kashmir.
