Oil and gas reserves not found off Karachi coast

Oil and gas reserves have not been found in offshore drilling off Karachi coast
Oil and gas reserves have not been found in offshore drilling off Karachi coast, Special Assistant to PM on Petroleum Nadeem Babar said Saturday.

Pakistan was hopeful of finding large oil and gas reserves in its territorial waters in the Arabian Sea.

US oil giant Exxon Mobil, Italy’s ENI and a couple other companies had been involved in drilling an ultra-deep oil well.

Speaking to media, Babar said the process of drilling up to more than 5500 meters was completed on Kekra-1 (Indus G-Block) off Karachi coast.

He said Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) also assisted Exxon Mobil and ENI in drilling the oil well.

The PM's aide said the office of DG Petroleum Concessions has been apprised of the results of drilling.

He further informed that the cost of drilling project, which has now been abandoned, remained over $100 million.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Imran Khan had said Pakistan would not need to import oil after reserves were found near Karachi coast.

"We are hopeful of finding large reserves of gas and oil in the sea near Karachi. The nation should pray for this and I will soon share good news regarding this," Khan had told reporters in Islamabad.

"God willing the reserves will be so large that we will not need to import any oil."

The Prime Minister has said the government’s poverty alleviation program ‘Ehsas’ would create a social safety network and for this program, the government would enhance its package from one hundred billion rupees to one hundred and eighty billion rupees to ensure its outreach to every poor.

Referring to the prevailing condition of the national economy, the Prime Minister said from the very first day he had been hinting at tough days ahead as the government inherited a record fiscal deficit.

PM address to fundraising Aftar Dinner for Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital in Peshawar

Prime Minister Imran Khan has said the government has resolved to improve public sector hospitals as per international standards and there is no plan to privatize them.

Addressing a fund-raising Iftar dinner of Shuakat Khanum Memorial Hospital in Peshawar last night, he said reforms would be introduced by rectifying administrative and management system of the government hospitals which are currently in poor state of affairs.

The prime minister said his government wants to introduce the health system which was enforced in the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital.

He said a big lie is being propagated about the privatization of government hospitals and declared in clear terms that there is no such plan under consideration.

Referring to the doctors’ protest in Peshawar, Imran Khan said the government would not step back from introducing the reforms in the public sector hospitals at any cost.

A few doctors are politically motivated to sabotage those reforms.

He resolved that the government would not yield to any pressure and continue to improve standard of those hospitals on the pattern of Shaukat Khanum Hospital where people are getting best healthcare facilities and treatment.

He also thanked donors for generously contributing towards the cancer hospital, which, he said, provided free treatment to 75 percent cancer patients.

The Prime Minister also asked the people to pray for successful oil and gas discovery from Karachi deep sea exploration, which, he said, would cater to the national energy requirements for next 50 years.

He further said the the nation would soon hear a good news to that effect.

Boeing says it has corrected simulator software of 737 MAX jets

Boeing says it has corrected simulator software of 737 MAX jets
Boeing Co has made corrections to simulator software that mimics the flying experience of its 737 MAX jets, which were involved in two fatal crashes, and the company has provided additional information to the device operators, a spokesperson said on Friday.

The spokesperson, Gordon Johndroe, said the changes will ensure that the simulator experience is representative across different flight conditions and will improve the simulation of force loads on the manual trim wheel that helps control the aeroplane.

The comments came after the New York Times on Friday reported that Boeing recently discovered that the flight simulators airlines use to train pilots could not adequately replicate conditions that played a role in the 737 MAX crashes.

“Boeing is working closely with the device manufacturers and regulators on these changes and improvements, and to ensure that customer training is not disrupted,” Johndroe said.

Although the simulators are not built by Boeing, the planemaker does provide the underlying information on which they are designed and built, the New York Times said.

The 737 MAX was grounded in March following a fatal Ethiopian Airlines crash that killed all 157 on board just five months after a similar crash of a Lion Air flight of a 737 MAX killed 189 people.

On Thursday, Boeing said it had completed a software update for its 737 MAX jets and that is also submitting a plan on pilot training to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.

Al-Azizia, Flagship references: IHC fixes hearing of appeals on June 19C

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday fixed the hearing of appeals of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) against the Al-Azizia and Flagship verdicts on June 19.

A two-judge bench comprising Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani will hear the appeals.

The accountability court had sentenced Sharif to seven years in prison and fined Rs1.5 billion in the Al-Azizia case on December 24. However, he was acquitted in the Flagship corruption reference.

The former prime minister has challenged the accountability court’s verdict in the Al-Azizia case, seeking to set aside the conviction and seven-year imprisonment in the case.

Whereas, NAB moved two appeals in the IHC, challenging the verdicts in the Al-Azizia and Flagship Investment references.

The bureau has pleaded with the court to enhance Sharif’s sentence to 14 years in the Al-Azizia case while strike down his acquittal in the Flagship case.

In its appeal against Nawaz’s acquittal in the Flagship reference, NAB contended that the court’s verdict is against the law and it should have been announced in light of evidence placed on record.

The IHC has been requested to declare the accountability court decision in Flagship reference null and void.

Common Diet Supplement May Help with Heart Health

Researchers think glucosamine may help lower inflammation and help reduce risk of heart disease.
Glucosamine may help lower risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a new study.

A popular and widely used dietary supplement for joint pain could also be beneficial for your heart.

According to new research Trusted Source published in The BMJ, habitual use of the supplement glucosamine was found to be associated with a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its more severe consequences like stroke.

However, researchers point out that despite this association, their work doesn’t establish a causal link between glucosamine and better CVD outcomes.

“Our study suggests a potential new beneficial effect of glucosamine on cardiovascular health. The practical implication would be upon further evidence from future studies, such as clinical trials, that verify such effects as causal,” said Dr. Lu Qi, a professor in the department of epidemiology at Tulane University and one of the study’s authors.

Nonetheless, the data from the study is robust.

Facebook wants your data: 5 ways to keep it safe

Hide your life from Facebook, while still posting about your life on Facebook.
Facebook has all the photos you took at your girls' weekend at the beach. That's no surprise, because you posted them to your profile page. But Facebook has ways to get even more information about your getaway.

The company isn't just a social network. It's an ad network too, and it follows you around on the internet and in real life to find information that'll help it tailor the ads it serves up to you. Facebook can track the websites you visited as you planned the trip.

It can gather customer information shared by partners, which might include the store where you bought your sunscreen. And Facebook has similar information about all the friends who went on the trip, and it knows you were all together, because it has your location data.

Put together, that's more revealing than any swimsuit photo.

Facebook tracks you so much that it sometimes feels like the company is eavesdropping on your conversations. In fact, many people think the social network is listening to them through the mic on their phone. Facebook has denied it does, but that hasn't put an end to this persistent conspiracy theory. CNET conducted an informal test and didn't find evidence suggesting Facebook was listening to our conversations.

Technical experts and privacy watchdogs agree it's unlikely Facebook is listening in on you. But that shouldn't give you comfort, they say, because Facebook's information gathering is much more effective than spying on your conversations could ever be.

"The funny thing -- well, funny in a perverse way -- is that the truth is a lot scarier than the myth," said Serge Egelman, a privacy researcher at the International Computer Science Institute.

You can't stop Facebook from collecting data about you, even if you deactivate or fully delete your account. (That said, deleting your account will significantly decrease the data collection.) The most you can do is limit what the social network gets. Here are some tips for keeping Facebook's mitts off your info.

Step 1: Log on, click through, opt out

First, limit the information Facebook uses to determine which ads it shows you.

You'll want to go into your settings and then choose "Ads" from the horizontal rail on the left. Next, navigate to the section called "Your ad preferences," and click on "Ad settings."

Under "Ads based on data from partners," you can decide whether to opt out of seeing ads based on data from companies that partner with Facebook. As an example, Facebook says if you allow it to use this data, "You may see ads for hotel deals if you visit travel websites."

The next section is "Ads based on your activity on Facebook company products that you see elsewhere." Here, you can choose whether Facebook uses specific information about you to tailor ads you see on other websites. Yes, Facebook shows you ads on pages outside of Facebook. Think of ads you see when you're doing things like reading an article from your local newspaper or shopping on a store's website.

The catch: Even if you opt out of everything, Facebook is still going to tailor ads using your gender, age, location and the tastes of people similar to you.

Step 2: Cut off third-party apps

Last year, a whistleblower revealed that Cambridge Analytica, a UK political consultancy, was misusing data harvested from Facebook. The scandal revealed just how much data Facebook transfers to third-party companies and organizations.

Since the scandal, Facebook has changed the options for how third-party apps can use your data. So it's a good idea to take a look at your settings again if you haven't done so recently.

From the "Settings" page, choose "Apps and websites" from the left rail. At the top of the web page, you'll see a list of any apps or websites that you logged in to using your Facebook account. Here you can remove specific third-party apps or limit the information they can request.

Below that is a section where you can pull out the big guns and cut off all access to your Facebook account from third-party apps. Under "Preferences," find the section that says "Apps, websites and games." Choose "Edit" to turn off access to your account.

The catch: If you fully opt out of connecting your Facebook account with third-party apps, you won't be able to log in to those apps with your Facebook account or use Facebook's "like" and "comment" features on third-party websites.

Step 3: Use outside blocking tools

You don't have to rely on Facebook settings to lock down your information. There are tools to help take your privacy to the next level.

Safari will automatically block Facebook and any other third-party service from using two types of web trackers on websites: third-party cookies and browser fingerprinting. Controlling those trackers is important if you want to limit Facebook's ability to watch you.

Third-party cookies let Facebook track your activity on any website that uses its like, share and comment features. (If you want to use those features, Safari will let you enable them after asking the first time.) Browser fingerprinting lets Facebook keep a continuous record of your activity even when you clear your cookies.

Similarly, Firefox offers an extension called Facebook Container, which separates your Facebook account from your activity on third-party websites. That means Facebook knows about your activity on other websites only if you use the Facebook share button.

The catch: Some of these features limit your use of Facebook tools on pages outside of the social network. For example, Facebook Container disables Facebook's like and comment features on third-party websites, and you can't log in to other services using your Facebook account.

Step 4: Keep your location under wraps

You can limit how much Facebook knows about the people around you, whether they're friends, co-workers or strangers on the subway. The first thing to do is kill the app's access to location services on your phone. But that isn't enough. Your IP address reveals your location to the websites you visit and the apps you use. So hide it with a VPN.

A VPN is a service that tunnels your internet connection to another location before connecting you to a site or app. In other words, you could be on a beach in Florida, but the VPN could lead Facebook to think you're somewhere else -- say, London -- based on the IP address it sees.

Be careful. You don't want to choose just any VPN. Make sure you choose one that's been vetted by privacy experts.

The catch: You'll likely have to log in to Facebook and verify your identity more frequently if the social network thinks you're using a new IP address all the time. It can be hard to use a VPN consistently, so you probably won't be able to hide your location at all times. Finally, the ads you see are going to be aimed at people outside your location. Of course, that's the point, isn't it?

Step 5: There's always more

You can also avoid installing the Facebook app on your phone, which keeps Facebook from adding your contacts to the information it already has about you. If you keep going down this path, it's a hop, skip and a jump to deleting your Facebook account.

And we haven't even gotten into the effects of using other Facebook-owned services, like Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. You could consider quitting those, too.

That isn't going to stop other tech giants, like Google, and lesser-known ad networks from collecting similar information about you as you browse the internet. Facebook is just the most visible ad network, said David Choffnes, a computer science professor at Northeastern University who studies apps and privacy.

"We don't realize how pervasive the companies that track our information online are," Choffnes said, "and how they share our information with each other."

Brooks Koepka extends lead as Tiger Woods misses cut at US PGA Championship

Woods and Koepka polar opposites
US PGA Championship second round leaderboard, Bethpage Black Course

Selected others: -2 T Fleetwood (Eng), L Oosthuizen (SA), R Fowler (US); Level M Fitzpatrick (Eng), P Mickelson (US), T Hatton (Eng), F Molinari (Ita); +1 P Casey (Eng), D Willett (Eng); +2 G McDowell (NI), +3 R McIlroy (NI), J Day (Aus)
Missed cut: +5 T Woods (US), S Garcia (Spa); +6 I Poulter (Eng)

Leaderboard:

Brooks Koepka extended his lead at the US PGA Championship with the lowest 36-hole score in major championship history as Tiger Woods missed the cut.

The defending champion leads by a tournament record seven shots on 12 under after a five-under 65 in round two at Bethpage Black on Long Island.

Masters champion Woods missed a sixth cut in his past 11 majors on five over.

Jordan Spieth (66) is joint second with Adam Scott (64) on five under, while England's Matt Wallace is a shot back.

Wallace had a run of six birdies in seven holes to put himself at six under but successive bogeys on the seventh and eighth, his 16th and 17th holes, meant he slipped to join a group on four under following a second-round 67.

Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who was among the early starters, posted an improved 71, helped by four birdies on his back nine, but he had an anxious wait to see if his three over par was good enough to make the cut.

The cut mark eventually came at four over, meaning Woods missed out by one shot.

"I made too many mistakes and didn't do the little things I needed to do," said Woods. "I did a lot of little things wrong.

"I've enjoyed being the Masters champion again and the PGA was a quick turnaround. Unfortunately I just didn't play well."

OGRA recommends 47 per cent hike in gas tariff

OGRA recommends 47% hike in gas tariff
The gas prices in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa may further increase by 47 per cent, while in Sindh and Balochistan by 28 per cent from the next fiscal year (July 1, 2019) due to the depreciation of the rupee against the dollar.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) on Friday sent a summary to the government in this regard.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has already hiked the gas prices up to 143 per cent during the ongoing fiscal year.

The rupee hit a new all-time low of 149.35 to the US dollar in the interbank market on Friday.

However, Ogra had taken Rs150 per US dollar exchange rate to determine the prices of gas for the consumers for next fiscal year 2019-20.

The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) – which supplies gas to Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa – had recommended an average increase in gas prices by 144 per cent. However, Ogra allowed 47 per cent average hike.

Similarly, the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) – which supplies gas to Sindh and Balochistan – had recommended an increase in gas prices by 30 per cent. But the regulator allowed a 28 per cent average increase in prices.

Ogra has recommended increasing gas prices for consumers falling under the first slab by 18 per cent, second slab 29 per cent, third slab 32 per cent, fourth slab 12 per cent, fifth slab four per cent and sixth slab also four per cent.

Experts say Ogra allowed the increase in gas prices to enable the government to avail the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout package.

The government has already agreed to the IMF’s demand of increasing prices of gas and electricity.

The SNGPL had estimated its revenue requirement of Rs474.6 billion, which includes Rs309.5 billion for the next financial year and an adjustment for the shortfall of Rs165.12 billion during the previous years.

The regulator allowed total revenue of Rs293.3 billion, including Rs264.58 billion for the next financial year 2018-19 and Rs28.7 billion revenue for previous years’ adjustments.

The gas utility has been allowed to recover this revenue shortfall from the gas consumers by increasing prices of gas by 47 per cent.

The regulator has also allowed SNGPL to build an 8,000 kilometres-long distribution network with an initial cost of Rs5.3 billion.

It also allowed Rs1.12 billion to be recovered from gas consumers for rehabilitation of the system and unaccounted for gas (UFG) control.

The authority allowed Rs344 million for 450 industrial and 5,000 commercial gas connections.

An amount of Rs3.2 billion has been allowed for 400,000 new domestic gas connections.

The regulator allowed 6.30 per cent UFG. Of the total gas theft amounting to 49.06 billion cubic feet per day, Ogra has put the burden of 29.2 bcfd on the consumers. The total UFG has been assessed at 10.5 per cent.

The SSGCL projected its revenue requirement at Rs279.6 billion, including Rs254.7 billion for the next financial year 2019-20 and Rs24.9 billion for previous years’ adjustment.

The regulator allowed Rs270.7 billion revenue, which includes Rs245.8 billion for next financial year and Rs24.9 billion for previous years’ adjustment.

The total UFG of the company has been calculated at 15.69 per cent. The regulator allowed 6.30 per cent or Rs19.2 billion to be collected from the consumers.

4th ODI: England beat Pakistan by three wickets, win series 3-0

England defeated Pakistan by three wickets
England defeated Pakistan by three wickets in the fourth one-day international at Trent Bridge on Friday, winning the five-match series 3-0.

Pakistan failed to capitalise on Babar Azam's century as they were held to a total of 340 for seven by World Cup hosts England.

With tournament favourites England naming their final 15-man World Cup squad on Tuesday, Surrey paceman Tom Curran did his selection prospects no harm with four wickets for 75 runs in a maximum 10 overs.

England, seeking a win that would seal the five-match series at 3-0 up with one to play, were looking at a stiff chase when Pakistan were 178 for one off 30 overs.

But the innings fell away following a century stand between Babar, who made 115, and Mohammad Hafeez (59).

It seemed the tourists were short of a truly competitive total because England have twice broken the record for the highest ODI total in three years at Trent Bridge. Last year's 481 for six against world champions Australia followed their 444 for three against Pakistan in 2016.

Pakistan's cause was not helped, when Imam-ul-Haq, fresh from his career-best 151 during England's six-wicket win in Tuesday's third ODI in Bristol, had to retire hurt on three after missing an intended pull of an 89 mph ball from fast bowler Mark Wood that hit him on the elbow.

But concerns over whether the 23-year-old left-handed opener, the nephew of Pakistan great and selection chief Inzamam-ul-Haq, would be fit for the World Cup were eased when he returned to resume his innings at the fall of the seventh wicket and he finished on six not out.

Following Imam's initial exit, Babar and Fakhar Zamam set about an England attack featuring two genuine fast bowlers in the recalled duo of Wood and Jofra Archer.

Babar uppercut Archer for an audacious six. Left-hander Fakhar hoisted Wood high over the boundary at deep square leg.

Babar's fifty came off 49 balls, Fakhar's off 44.

But Fakhar fell for 57 when, trying to drive Curran through the covers, he sliced the ball to Wood at third man.

Babar continued to attack, timing a drive off Adil Rashid superbly through the covers for four before Hafeez hoicked a six off the leg-spinner.

Hafeez was reprieved again on 45 when wicket-keeper Jos Buttler — who had sent Pakistan into bat in his role as captain after regular skipper Eoin Morgan's one-game ban following the team's slow over-rate in Bristol — missed a chance to stump him off spinner Moeen Ali.

Hafeez went to fifty at better than a run-a-ball before, on 59, he pulled Wood to mid-on.

Babar's 10th boundary, a leg-glance off Ben Stokes, took him to his ninth hundred in 63 ODIs, and first against England, in 104 balls.

He then sliced Surrey paceman Curran and Archer, running in from the cover boundary, held a well-judged catch to leave Pakistan 249 for three.

Wood showed his variety by deceiving Shoaib Malik (41) into hitting his wicket with a slower ball and finish with two for 71.

In first for Asia, Taiwan lawmakers back same-sex marriage

In first for Asia, Taiwan lawmakers back same-sex marriage
Taiwan became the first place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage on Friday, as thousands of demonstrators outside parliament cheered and waved rainbow flags, despite deep divisions over marriage equality.

Lawmakers of the majority Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) backed the bill, which passed 66 to 27, although the measure could complicate President Tsai Ing-wen’s bid to win a second term in presidential elections next year.

Demonstrators braved heavy rain outside parliament in Taipei, the capital, with some embracing tearfully as others hailed the vote with chants of “Asia’s first,” and “Way to go, Taiwan!”

The bill, which offers same-sex couples similar legal protections for marriage as heterosexuals, takes effect on May 24 after Tsai signs it into law.

“Today is a proud day for Taiwan. We demonstrate the value of kindness and inclusiveness from this land to the world,” Tsai told reporters after the measure passed.

“Through legalization, (we) ensure that everyone’s love is equal and everyone is treated equally,” added Tsai, who campaigned on a promise of marriage equality in the 2016 presidential election.

The law, however, allows same-sex marriages only between Taiwanese, or with foreigners whose countries recognize same-sex marriage. It permits adoption of children biologically related to at least one of the same-sex pair.

The vote followed a years-long tussle over marriage equality that culminated in a 2017 declaration by the democratic island’s constitutional court giving same-sex couples the right to marry, and setting a deadline of May 24 for legislation.

Taipei’s colorful gay pride parade, one of Asia’s largest, puts on display every year the vibrancy of the island’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

“After 30 years of fighting, homosexuals can finally get married,” said 32-year-old musician Ken Chen, who was outside parliament watching the vote broadcast live. “Many of us were in tears.”

CHALLENGE FOR TSAI

Rights group Amnesty International welcomed the end of a “long and arduous campaign”.

“We hope this landmark vote will generate waves across Asia and offer a much-needed boost in the struggle for equality for LGBTI people in the region,” said Annie Huang, acting director of Amnesty International Taiwan.

However, Friday’s measure could prove a hurdle for Tsai’s effort to seek a second term in a January election, after a DPP poll defeat last year was blamed partly on criticism of her reform agenda, including marriage equality.

Late last year, Taiwan voters opposed same-sex marriage in a series of referendums, defining marriage as being between a man and a woman in civil law, though seeking a special law for same-sex unions.

Conservative groups that oppose same-sex marriage said the legislation disrespected the people’s will.

“The will of some seven million people in the referendum has been trampled,” one group, the Coalition for the Happiness of Our Next Generation said in a statement. “The massive public will strike back in 2020.”

Australia passed laws allowing same-sex marriage in 2017, but such unions are not recognized by Hong Kong and neighboring China, which regards Taiwan as a wayward province to be returned to the fold by force, if necessary.

Ministers agree way for Russia to rejoin Europe's human rights body

Ministers agree way for Russia to rejoin Europe's human rights body
Foreign ministers from the Council of Europe, the continent’s chief human rights watchdog, reached an agreement on Friday that opens the way for Russia to return to the organization, resolving a dispute that began after Moscow’s seizure of Crimea.

The agreement follows efforts by France and Germany to find a compromise among the 47-nation group and means Russia will likely take part in a meeting of the council’s parliamentary assembly in June, when key new appointments will be made.

Russia has indicated it will resume payment of its membership dues as a result. It stopped payment nearly two years ago after its voting rights in the council were suspended over its 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

Ukraine, supported by six other countries, tried unsuccessfully to block the agreement, which was approved by a qualified majority, diplomats said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed the move.

“We do not intend to leave the Council of Europe as some people are trying to suggest by spreading false rumors. And we are not refusing to fulfill a single obligation, including financial ones,” Lavrov said in Helsinki, where the meeting was held. Finland currently chairs the council.

The Russian spat has prompted questions about the future and durability of the 70-year-old Council of Europe, the guardian of the European Convention on Human Rights and the creator of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

It also left a 90 million euro hole in the council’s budget since Russia accounts for around 7% of contributions.

STAYING IN THE CLUB

France and Germany have been keen to keep Russia inside the council, arguing that if it is outside it is harder for any human rights abuses to be flagged and pursued by the court.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin boycotted Friday’s meeting. Officials said they understood Kiev’s frustration, but said the council was not the place to resolve the Crimea issue.

“Ukraine has every reason to demand Crimea’s restoration,” said Nina Nordstrom, head of human rights policy at the Finnish foreign ministry. “But matters of peace and war between countries are not solved within this organization.”

Britain, Poland, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined Ukraine in opposing the agreement, diplomats said, while 39 countries backed it.

Criticising the agreement on Twitter, Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius said Russia was continuing its “aggression” against Ukraine and said European values meant very little if they were not defended.

Officials said Friday’s agreement meant Russia would take part in the June assembly in Strasbourg, when a new secretary- general and court judges will be elected, provided some technical rule changes are approved first.

“What happened today is a pre-final step,” said Daniel Holtgen, chief spokesman of the organization.

“The parliamentary assembly will have to take into account the decisions of ministers and decide whether or not to change their internal rules so that Russia can take part in these elections in June.

“Russia has said the moment they return to the parliamentary assembly and their rights are restored, they will pay their contributions and their dues, and we have no reason to doubt that statement.”

Former French president Sarkozy set for trial over 2012 campaign

Former French president Sarkozy set for trial over 2012 campaign
France’s Constitutional Council cleared the way on Friday for former president Nicolas Sarkozy to be tried over alleged illegal financing of his failed re-election campaign in 2012.

Sarkozy had appealed to the council invoking the “double-jeopardy” principle because he had already been convicted in 2013 and ordered to pay more than 360,000 euros for breaching campaign-finance rules.

But in its decision on Friday, the council ruled that the penalty Sarkozy was ordered to pay in 2013 was for different violations and different amounts than the fraud he and 13 co-defendants are now being investigated for.

The case now hinges on the country’s top appeal court, the Cour de Cassation, where Sarkozy, 64, has lodged a separate appeal. If that too is rejected, the case will return to prosecutors who will decide whether he should be tried.

If he is, Sarkozy would be the first French president in the dock since Jacques Chirac, who preceded him at the helm of the country from 1995 to 2007. Chirac was convicted of misusing public funds and given a suspended jail term in 2011.

The so-called “Bygmalion” case against Sarkozy centers on accusations that the former president’s political party, then known as the UMP, worked with a friendly public relations firm to hide the true cost of his re-election bid.

France sets strict limits on campaign spending. Prosecutors allege the PR firm, Bygmalion, invoiced UMP rather than the campaign, allowing Sarkozy to spend almost double the permitted amount.

Even though investigating magistrates found no evidence that Sarkozy set up the fraudulent system, took part in it or was even informed about it, they considered it unlikely that he had left it solely to staff to take decisions on such matters.

Sarkozy has denied any wrongdoing.

“We can only be disappointed by this decision,” Sarkozy’s lawyer Emmanuel Piwnica told LCI TV station.

After five years in power, Sarkozy was defeated by Socialist Party candidate Francois Hollande in the 2012 election.

Sarkozy has since faced a series of investigations into allegations of corruption, fraud, favoritism and campaign-funding irregularities.

He has since retired from politics, after losing in a primary election bid to become his party’s candidate for the 2017 presidential election.

Algeria election may be postponed, protests continue

Algeria election may be postponed, protests continue
Algeria’s imminent presidential election looks likely to be postponed, a source said on Friday, as protesters returned to the streets for the 13th successive Friday to demand the removal of the nation’s ruling elite.

After two decades in power, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika quit last month under pressure from protesters and the army, but demonstrations have continued seeking political reforms and the removal of all officials belonging to the old guard.

A presidential election is scheduled for July 4.

But a source familiar with the matter said the vote was to be delayed due to difficulties of organizing the logistics in time and opposition on the street.

“There won’t be elections on July 4,” he told Reuters, asking not to be named.

Hundreds of protesters began gathering again on Friday, calling for the resignations of the interim president, Abdelkader Bensalah, and Prime Minister Noureddine Bedoui, appointed by Bouteflika days before he stepped down.

“No to elections of shame. Remove Bensalah and Bedoui first,” read one banner held up in downtown Algiers.

The Constitutional Council, which is overseeing the transition, was expected to issue a statement on the election process shortly. The deadline for would-be presidential candidates to collect and submit 60,000 signatures is May 25.

The source told Reuters the vote could be delayed until the end of the year, with names in the air to run the transition including conservative former minister Ahmed Taleb Ibrahimi and technocrat and former prime minister Ahmed Benbitour.

“According to the law laid down by the IHC, under the FBR Act, a person from the private sector may be appointed the chairman of the FBR in the exceptional and extraordinary circumstances through a duly advertised process,” the petitioner argued.

Hence, the petitioner pleaded with the court to declare his appointment as illegal, without any lawful authority and of no legal effect.

Brexit talks collapse as May's premiership crumbles

Brexit talks collapse as May's premiership crumbles
Britain’s tumultuous divorce from the European Union was again in disarray on Friday after the opposition Labour Party declared last-ditch talks dead due to Prime Minister Theresa May’s crumbling government.

Nearly three years after the United Kingdom voted 52% to 48% in a referendum to leave the EU, it remains unclear how, when or even if it will leave the European club it joined in 1973. The current deadline to leave is Oct. 31.

Brexit talks between May’s Conservative Party and Labour collapsed hours after May agreed on Thursday to set out in early June a timetable for her departure.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn wrote to May on Friday informing her that the Brexit talks, which began on April 3, had “gone as far as they can” due to the instability of her government and its refusal to fundamentally shift its position.

“We have been unable to bridge important policy gaps between us,” Corbyn, a socialist who voted against joining the predecessor of the EU in 1975, wrote to May.

“Even more crucially, the increasing weakness and instability of your government means there cannot be confidence in securing whatever might be agreed between us,” Corbyn said.

He said Labour would oppose May’s deal when it returns to parliament early next month. He later told reporters there was no chance of getting even part of a Brexit deal ratified by the end of July.

The divorce deal, which May agreed last year with the EU, has been rejected three times by parliament. May will put the Withdrawal Agreement Bill, legislation required to enact the exit deal, to a vote in parliament in early June.

A source in May’s office said the bill would not be the same thing parliament had rejected and will contain new features to reflect some lawmakers’ concerns.

Looking uncomfortable as she delivered a televised message to voters ahead of the European Parliament elections, May suggested Labour’s internal divisions over a second referendum were to blame for the failure of the talks.

Britain's Prime Minster Theresa May looks on during a EU election campaign event in Bristol, Britain May 17, 2019. REUTERS/Toby Melville/Pool
The pound sank to $1.275, its lowest level since mid-January.

May’s hands have been tied, knowing that to make concessions to Labour would lead to fury in her divided party. Labour has feared any compromises on issues such as workers’ rights would be torn up by May’s successor.

Britain’s labyrinthine crisis over Brexit has stunned allies and foes alike, and with deadlock in London, the world’s fifth largest economy faces an array of options including an exit with a deal to smooth the transition, a no-deal exit, an election or a second referendum.

After she puts her deal to a vote in the week of June 3, when U.S. President Donald Trump is due to make a state visit to Britain, May has said she will agree a timetable for the election of her successor.

Before then, the government is considering holding a series of “indicative votes” to see what path, if any, lawmakers might be able to agree.

“When we come to bring the legislation forward we will think carefully about ... the outcome of these talks, we will also consider whether we have some votes to see if the ideas that have come through command a majority in the House of Commons,” May said.

Boris Johnson, the face of the campaign for Britain to leave the EU, said he would be standing as a candidate to replace May as Conservative leader.

“As we look to the future, we have to listen to the public,” Simon Clarke, a Conservative lawmaker, said on Twitter. “Boris Johnson is the only candidate who increases likelihood to vote Conservative among both our 2017 voters & people planning to vote (for the newly formed) Brexit Party.”

The winner of a leadership contest will automatically become prime minister and will take control of the Brexit process, which has plunged Britain into its worst political crisis since World War Two.

Johnson has been one of May’s most outspoken critics over Brexit and supports leaving the EU without a deal. Parliament has repeatedly said it does not want a no-deal Brexit.

The Brexit crisis has left the United Kingdom divided and smaller parties - such as Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party and the pro-EU Liberal Democrats - are poaching support from both the Conservative and Labour parties at the fastest rate for decades.

“Britain is divided down the middle over Brexit: it was in 2016 and it is in 2019 - and that is one of the reasons why this issue is so difficult to resolve,” John Curtice, Britain’s top polling expert, told Reuters.

Dollar soars to new high of Rs150 in open market

Dollar
The US dollar soared to a record high of Rs150 in the open market on Friday morning, as the rupee continued to slide following Pakistan's $6 billion bailout agreement with the International Monetary Fund earlier this week.

The greenback gained by another Rs3 to touch an all-time high of Rs150 in the open market, and rose by Rs2.48 in the interbank market to reach Rs149 earlier today.
