Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to normalise relations with Israel 'soon'

Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to normalise relations with Israel 'soon'
Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are preparing to sign a peace and normalisation agreement with Israel similar to the one declared by the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, sources told the Arabi21 news.

According to the "well-informed sources", official normalisation of relations between the two Arab countries and Israel will be established "after a short period of time", noting that this normalisation is aimed at "supporting US President Donald Trump, in light of the remarkable decline in his chances of winning the elections".

On Thursday, Bahrain congratulated the UAE on concluding the normalisation agreement with Israel, and said that the agreement is part of "measures taken to increase the chances to reach peace in the Middle East".

Bahrain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its statement: "The Kingdom of Bahrain extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Emirates on announcing the agreement reached with the United States and Israel to stop annexing Palestinian land and to take measures that increase the chances of reaching peace in the Middle East."

Kashmiris observe India’s independence day as Black Day today

Kashmiris observing India’s independence day as Black Day today
Kashmiris on both sides of Line of Control (LoC) and the world over are observing Indian Independence Day on Saturday, as Black Day to convey the message to the international community that New Delhi continues to deny them their inalienable right to self-determination.

The day is being marked with a complete shutdown in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The veteran Hurriyat leader, Syed Ali Gilani, in a message referring to India s illegal occupation over Jammu and Kashmir said that a nation that resorts to usurpation and deprives others of their freedoms loses every right to celebrate its freedom.

Gilani asked people to observe complete shutdown on August 15 to keep alive the tradition of observing India’s Independence Day as a Black Day.

Yesterday, Kashmiris took to streets and fired firecrackers in Srinagar and many other place across the Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) to commemorate the Independence Day of Pakistan.

UEFA Champions League: Bayern humiliate Barcelona 8-2 to reach Champions League semis

Bayern humiliate Barcelona 8-2 to reach Champions League semis
Barcelona were left red-faced and out of the running to lift the Champions League title on Friday after German champions Bayern Munich utterly humiliated them with an extraordinary 8-2 thrashing that sent them through into the semi-finals.

Thomas Mueller scored twice for a rampant Bayern, who led 4-1 after 31 astonishing minutes, as Lionel Messi and his team mates were condemned to a thrashing that felt like the end of an era for the illustrious Catalan club.

“We feel devastated, although shame is the real word I’m looking for,” said Barca defender Gerard Pique, adding that the historic defeat called for urgent changes across the club.

Barca coach Quique Setien, who is unlikely to survive the looming inquest, called the drubbing “a tremendously painful defeat”.

Bayern coach Hansi Flick hailed an “outstanding” display from his side but stressed that they were firmly focused on the semi-final, which will be against Manchester City or Olympique Lyonnais.

Mueller added: “We had so much fun today. Of course, Barcelona are special, so we had to be even more aggressive and come back again and again.

“You can imagine we feel good after this match but we have to be quiet and regenerate.”

The scoreline recalled Germany’s 7-1 semi-final win over Brazil in the 2014 World Cup, a game where Flick was on the bench as the national team’s assistant coach.

It began with Bayern grabbing a fourth minute lead when Mueller collected Ivan Perisic’s cross from the left and played a clever one-two with Robert Lewandowski before drilling home.

But within three minutes Barca had struck back - Clement Lenglet’s super long ball found Jordi Alba in space and David Alaba’s attempt to deal with his searching cross ended up flying past his own keeper Manuel Neuer.

Running riot

Neuer then had to be quick off his line to foil a goal-bound Luis Suarez but was almost caught out by Messi’s cross-shot from the right which drifted through the area and struck the post.

But just as Barca seemed to have established themselves, the Germans regained their lead in the 21st minute — Serge Gnabry fed Perisic on the left and the Croatian glanced up to see his options before drilling past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Bayern then added the third as Barca’s defence was opened up again with ease. Thiago Alcantara was given plenty of space in midfield to find Leon Goretzka whose superb ball picked out Gnabry, who had got behind Lenglet and then made no mistake with the finish.

Flick’s side were running riot and it got worse for Barca when a low cross from Joshua Kimmich was turned in at the near post by Mueller — another goal of ruthless simplicity making it 4-1 at the break.

The Spaniards desperately needed to find a way to shift the momentum after the break and Suarez, one of the few Barca players to emerge with any credit from the encounter, provided a route back into the game with a fine strike, in the 57th minute.

Jordi Alba found Suarez on the edge of the box and the Uruguayan jinked passed Jerome Boateng before blasting home.

But Bayern were in no mood to turn down the heat and six minutes later they restored their three-goal advantage thanks to some outstanding work from their Canadian teenager Alphonso Davies.

The left back dribbled in from the flank, danced past Nelson Semedo to get to the byline and then pulled the ball back to fellow full back Kimmich to slot home and make it 5-2.

Somehow Bayern had managed to score five goals without prolific striker Robert Lewandowski, who had scored in his previous seven Champions League matches, getting in on the act.

Eight minutes from the end, the Pole put that right.

Substitute Philippe Coutinho, who is on loan at the German club from Barca, floated over a cross from the left which Lewandowski firmly headed home at the back post.

To add insult to the already painful injury, Coutinho then scored two more before the end, as Barcelona fell apart in unimaginable fashion to the brilliance of the Bavarians.

China to supply COVID-19 vaccine to Pakistan for trials: report

coronavirus vaccines
China has agreed to supply coronavirus vaccines to Pakistan to conduct tests. If the results prove effective, Pakistan will ensure its most vulnerable segment of the population — elderly, health-care workers and people with medical conditions associated with serious cases of COVID-19 — are vaccinated, as per a report in The Wall Street Journal.

According to the publication, officials said that the supplies, once proven effective and safe, will be used to vaccinate close to one-fifth of the country’s population according to the agreement.

The WSJ said that it is one of the first agreements China has reached with any country to test its coronavirus vaccine in populations outside its borders.

Officials also said that Pakistan was also negotiating with a second Chinese company to conduct trials of its vaccine in the country.

"China hasn’t been a major vaccine producer globally. It needs to test its COVID-19 vaccines outside its borders because coronavirus cases in China have dwindled and it is harder to find the population diversity required," read the report.

The publication reported that the state-owned China National Pharmaceutical Group, commonly known as Sinopharm, has teamed up with Karachi University’s International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences to hold the trials in Pakistan.

“Pakistan would get the vaccine on a priority basis,” an official involved in forging the agreement told the Wall Street Journal. However, the official clarified that the financial terms of the deal are yet to be finalised.

The newspaper reported that Pakistan will conduct Phase 1 trials of the vaccine and then move rapidly to the final stage Phase 3 trial. The final phase would require tens of thousands of volunteers.

According to the newspaper, China has developed three coronavirus vaccines which are in the Phase 3 trials, all of them relying on hte traditional inactive virus technology.

The Chinese companies are also carrying out final trials in other countries hit by COVID-19 such as the United Arab Emirates and Brazil.

The race for the coronavirus vaccines has heated up in recent weeks with Western countries also pushing their vaccines to the final trial stage. COVID-19 vaccines are currently being developed by the Oxford University and the US-based Moderna Inc.

Though Pakistan lifted the coronavirus lockdown a few days ago, government officials have urged masses to implement COVID-19 SOPs and precautionary measures in order to thwart a second wave of the virus.

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) had announced last week that the coronavirus lockdown would be relaxed further, with markets, shopping malls, cinemas, dine-in restaurants, salons, gyms, eateries and other businesses reopening across the country, including major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, and Quetta.

No constitutional provision to carve out Karachi from Sindh: CM Murad

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said on Friday that there is not a single provision in the Constitution to "carve out Karachi" from the rest of Sindh and bring it under the federal government's rule.

“If anybody has developed such an idea in his mind he should take it out, otherwise the people of Sindh are strong enough to thwart such an attempt,” he said in an apparent warning.

His statement came a few days after Governor Sindh Imran Ismail said the Centre "may impose Article 149" in Karachi after the federal and provincial governments received flak for the havoc that recent rains caused in the metropolis.

Article 149 states that the federal government, in order to exercise its own executive authority in the provinces, can give directions in certain cases to the provinces.

Accompanied by Minister of Irrigation Sohail Anwar Siyal, Minister Rehabilitation Faraz Dero, MNA Rafiq Jamali, MPAs Pir Mujeeb, Shajila Leghari and others in Dadu, Murad brushed aside the impression that the Centre's rule can be imposed in Karachi.

“Karachi is not the teacup of the PTI government in the Centre,” he said, adding that people of Sindh have given the mandate to the PPP to rule the province and its people were strong enough to thwart such a move.

“This is the wishful thinking of some politically and constitutionally empty-minded people and it will never take place,” he said.

'Sindh govt may not have properly informed SC about steps taken for Karachi'

Earlier today, Shah said that his government may have failed in "properly" informing the Supreme Court about the actions taken by the provincial government in Karachi.

“In 2009, 125mm rain was recorded [in Karachi] and Shahrah-e-Faisal was inundated for three days. This year, water did not remain [on the road] for even four hours,” said CM Murad while talking to media at the Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi.

Speaking about the cleaning of Karachi’s nullahs, the chief minister said that his government was conducting a survey of 38 nullahs of the city and cleaning them as well.

"The problems will solve once the nullas are cleaned," he said.

The statement by the CM Murad comes a day after the apex court turned down his government's plea to allow it to clean Karachi's nullahs instead of the National Disaster Management Authority.

SC rejects request to reassign charge of drain cleaning

The Supreme Court had turned down a petition to reassign the responsibility for cleaning Karachi’s drainage system to the Sindh government from the National Disaster Management Authority on Thursday, which it had assigned in the last hearing.

The apex court, under Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, decided after resuming the hearing of the case regarding Karachi's rain-related problems and unscheduled loadshedding.

During the hearing, the Sindh government presented a report related to its performance in the recent monsoon season and the measures it took to mitigate the problems caused by heavy rains.

“You [the Sindh government] show us pictures after cleaning up two nullahs and claim that [all of] Karachi has been cleaned up now,” the top judge had remarked on the performance report.

CJP Ahmed inquired that if the drains were being cleaned up as was claimed then why did water inundate the city during the rains.

“If the Sindh government was cleaning the drains then why did the NDMA have to step in?” the judge asked the provincial authorities in the court.

The advocate general had responded by saying it is not clear why the NDMA was sent to the city, claiming that 50% work was already done on the Gujjar nullah and 20-25% on the other major drains when the authority took charge.

The provincial government then sought time till August 30 for cleaning up the drainage system of the city.

To this, Justice Ijaz-ul-Hasan reminded the officials that the NDMA was already cleaning up the drains. He urged the Sindh government to help alleviate the problems of the residents of the metropolis.

Pakistan's approach to UAE-Israel deal to be guided by Palestinian people's rights and aspirations

Foreign office
Pakistan on Friday said that its approach to the agreement between UAE and Israel will be guided by how Palestinian's rights and aspirations are upheld.

"Pakistan’s approach will be guided by our evaluation of how Palestinians’ rights and aspirations are upheld and how regional peace, security and stability are preserved," said a statement by the Foreign Office.

It noted that the development has "far-reaching implications".

"Pakistan has an abiding commitment to the full realisation of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to self-determination," the statement highlighted.

It added: "Peace and stability in the Middle East region is also Pakistan’s key priority."

The statement also stressed that Pakistan has "consistently supported a two-state solution in accordance with the relevant UN and OIC resolutions as well as international law" so that a "comprehensive and lasting peace" in the region can be established.

US-brokered deal

In the deal announced on Thursday by the US, Israel pledged to suspend its planned annexation of Palestinian lands in exchange for a normalisation of ties with the UAE.

The agreement was the product of lengthy discussions between Israel, the UAE and the United States that accelerated recently, White House officials said.

A joint statement issued by the three nations said US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed had “agreed to the full normalisation of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates”.

The statement said that “as a result of this diplomatic breakthrough and at the request of President Trump with the support of the United Arab Emirates, Israel will suspend declaring sovereignty” over areas of the West Bank that were envisioned in a US plan announced by Trump in January.

The agreement envisions giving Muslims greater access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Old City of Jerusalem by allowing them to fly from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv, White House officials said.

Trump said, “This deal is a significant step towards building a more peaceful, secure and prosperous Middle East. Now that the ice has been broken, I expect more Arab and Muslim countries will follow the United Arab Emirates’ lead .... and normalise relations with Israel.”

“We are already discussing this with other nations, very powerful, very good nations that want to see peace in the Middle East so you will probably see others of these,” Trump added. “Things are happening that I can’t talk about, but they’re extremely positive.”

Princess Diana would have ‘fought’ for Prince William and Harry amid royal rift

Princess Diana
With bubbling tension between Prince William and Prince Harry escaping to the surface, a royal expert has come forwards, claiming Princess Diana would never have stood for such a long drawn out spat between the two brothers.

Reportedly, the princess would have put would in any effort necessary to help her boys “work through their issues” amicably.

According to a royal expert working for a leading daily, if Princess Diana would have been alive today, she would never have stood for this drawn-out spat and would have put would in any effort necessary to help her boys “work through their issues” amicably.

BAZAAR's royal editor and coauthor spoke to Entertainment Tonight, saying, "Diana definitely would've got Harry and William together and made them work through their issues.”

“I think transparency was always something really important to Diana, and it's something we haven't seen a lot of in the recent months or the past few years with Harry and Meghan and their treatment of them within the royal family.”

In Finding Freedom, Scobie also touched upon Diana’s would-be influence if she were alive, because he believes "Diana would've stood up for them and she would've seen the position they were in mirrors some of the challenges that she faced within the institution too”

Before concluding he pointed out, the one silver lining to this rift would be that they have not yet broken ties. Maintaining a brotherly bond is "incredibly important" to Prince Harry and “one thing we have to remember with Harry and William's relationship today is it's not over.”

Former South Africa captain Smith breaks silence over race bias claims

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith
Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith on Thursday responded to allegations of bias against black players by stating that he had "personal relationship challenges" with several other players during his time in charge.

Smith, currently Cricket South Africa´s director of cricket, has come under fire in recent weeks for appointing former Test wicketkeeper Mark Boucher as national team coach.

He has also been accused of allowing black players to feel isolated during his time as captain.

Smith, who captained South Africa in a world record 108 Test matches from 2003 until 2014, as well as 149 one-day internationals, said he realised early in his captaincy that it would not be possible to please everyone in his team.

Former wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile was particularly critical of Smith during a radio interview on Tuesday, blaming Smith for keeping him out of the Test team after Boucher suffered a career-ending injury on a 2012 tour of England.

Fast bowler Makhaya Ntini earlier said he felt "lonely" as a player despite playing in 101 Tests and he also felt he was unfairly dropped from the team towards the end of his career.

Although Tsolekile, who has subsequently been banned for 12 years for his role in a match-fixing scandal in a domestic competition, was in the squad as a reserve wicketkeeper, the gloves were handed to leading batsman AB de Villiers.

"I look at many respected captains around the world and there are plenty of players who felt they were not given a fair chance," said Smith in a statement which he said was issued in his personal capacity.

He said Australia´s Steve Waugh was an example of a highly regarded captain who had his detractors from former team-mates.

Smith cited Shaun Pollock and Lance Klusener as two leading players who were dropped from the team before they were ready to retire.

"There were very emotional discussions because they are both legends of our cricket history."

He said Pollock and Ntini had to make way in similar circumstances because South Africa were seeking more bowling firepower.

Smith added that he personally was "gutted" when he was not selected for the 2003 World Cup - he eventually came into the squad as an injury replacement - and again later in his career when he was dropped from the one-day side.

"I felt I still had more to give in ODI cricket but (replacement) Quinton de Kock has shown that it was his time," he said.

"And, over time, I have grown to understand that it was the right call for the team. And that has always been the crux of the decisions made in my time."

Smith sympathised with Tsolekile because wicketkeeping was a specialist role and it was a trend in international cricket for wicketkeepers to have long careers, keeping other capable glovemen out of the team.

He said the decision to pick De Villiers ahead of Tsolekile in 2012 was made by "a whole panel of selectors" and that then-coach Gary Kirsten had told Tsolekile he was reserve to De Villiers following Boucher´s injury.

In recent weeks, a group of former black players and coaches have criticised events in South African cricket, including the appointment of Boucher as national coach ahead of black coaches who have stronger formal coaching credentials.

Boucher has only a level two coaching certificate which is given to former players without having to attend courses.

The group, describing themselves as "concerned former cricketers and coaches" had a virtual meeting with the board of Cricket South Africa last weekend.

Smith said allegations and insinuations against him were "extremely hurtful and I deny them in the strongest possible sense."

Nishan-e-Pakistan Award conferred upon Kashmiri leader

The prestigious award was received by Hurriyat leaders
Pakistan conferred Nishan-e-Pakistan Award upon Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Independence Day, August 14.

The prestigious award was received by Hurriyat leaders at the Aiwan-e-Sadr Friday on behalf of Geelani.

Geelani was born in the Bandipora area of northern Kashmir on September 29, 1929. A staunch advocate of Kashmiris' right to self-determination, he has been the leading voice against Indian oppression and injustice in the occupied valley.

The Hurriyat Conference, an umbrella organisation formed in 1993 by various pro-freedom groups in Kashmir, provides a political platform for voices that wish to rid the area of Indian occupation.

However, there was a split in the group in 2003 with Geelani leading a separate faction that was in favour of accession to Pakistan. The split formed when Geelani walked out after another group decided to hold talks with New Delhi.

Geelani was elected chairman for life of his Hurriyat group, which comprises 24 constituent parties.

The other faction is led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who has been under house arrest since August last year. Both Hurriyats used to regularly issue statements and protest programmes against the Indian leadership.

Kashmir Solidarity Day

Pakistan is celebrating Independence Day today. In his message, President Alvi stated that the country was observing it as the "Kashmir Solidarity Day" in light of India's illegal attempt at the annexation of the occupied territory.

On his Independence Day message, President Alvi reassured Pakistanis that the people of occupied Kashmir will get their right to self-determination.

"I assure the resilient people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir that Pakistan will continue to support them in their just struggle for their Right to Self-Determination as enshrined in the United Nations Security Council resolutions," he said.

Public and private buildings as well as streets bazaars and markets have been profusely illuminated. National flags, buntings, portraits of founding fathers, posters and banners are also seen everywhere as part of the celebration of Independence Day.

"We need to stand united to meet the social, economic and security challenges being confronted by the nation,” the president said.

Prime Minister Imran Khan in his message also congratulated the entire nation on 74th Independence Day.

“During past seven decades of our journey, we have confronted with various challenges. We have battled against odds both at external as well as internal fronts.

From the hostility of a neighboring country, with its known hegemonic intentions, to the scourge of terrorism and from coping with natural calamities to fighting pandemics, our nation has always shown resilience and perseverance,” said PM Imran.

“While we celebrate this Independence Day, our hearts are profoundly grieved by the sufferings of our brethren in Indian occupied Kashmir who are facing military siege since past one year.

We stand firmly behind our Kashmiri brethren in their struggle for their right to self-determination,” said PM Imran.

Google celebrates Pakistan’s Independence Day

It illustrated the fortified eastern entrance of Pakistan’s historic Khojak Tunnel
The tech giant Google has commemorated Pakistan’s Independence Day with a doodle artwork of an iconic landmark, Khojak Tunnel, located in Balochistan’s Qilla Abdullah district.

It illustrated the fortified eastern entrance of Pakistan’s historic Khojak Tunnel, also known as Shela Bagh Tunnel, one of the nation’s oldest and longest underpasses.

Its construction had begun in 1888 to extend the area’s railway through the Khojak pass of the Toba Kakar mountain range, which was at the time impossible to cross by train.

It stated, “The Khojak Tunnel’s construction was an unprecedented undertaking in the South Asian subcontinent.

Over 19 million bricks were required, most of which were kilned at the rugged site, and builders burned more than 6,000 candles to illuminate their work in the dark space. Upon its completion in 1891, the 3.9-kilometer Khojak Tunnel became the fourth-longest underpass in the world.”

“To honor this feat of civil engineering, in 1976 the Pakistani government printed a depiction of the Khojak Tunnel on its five-rupee note, which remained in circulation until 2005,” the company said in a statement in connection with Pakistan’s Independence Day in celebration of the date in 1947 when it became an autonomous republic.

Chinese companies launch pilot projects of driverless taxis

Chinese companies launch pilot projects of driverless taxis
Chinese entrants to the race to put autonomous vehicles on the road are bringing “robotaxis” online in hopes that a hired-car format can be the key to unlocking wide acceptance of the futuristic technology.

It is expected to be years before cars that operate completely without human intervention are unleashed owing to lingering technological, regulatory, and safety hurdles. But as China challenges US tech dominance, Chinese players such as Baidu, Alibaba-backed AutoX and ride-sharing king DiDi Chuxing recently launched autonomous taxi pilot projects in cities around the country.

Similar efforts are under way in the US, and AutoX’s chief executive Xiao Jianxiong said the first fully-autonomous vehicles could be on the roads by the end of the year.

Robotaxis or delivery services are considered ideal for accumulating the driving time and huge data cache needed for cars to “learn” and become safe enough.

Chinese consumers — known for eagerly embracing e-commerce, online payments and other digital solutions — are lining up for a spin in DiDi Chuxing’s self-developed autonomous taxis at a Shanghai pilot project launched in June.

Underlining the work-in-progress nature of the concept, a DiDi staffer occupies the driver’s seat, ready to take the wheel if needed.

But Da Xuan, a 24-year-old social-media worker, leapt at a taste of the future.

“I heard companies like Uber or Tesla were doing autonomous driving, so I was curious what Chinese companies were doing, whether they can go into production, and if so, what will the (riding) experience be like,” she said.

“It was very smooth,” Da said, adding that she would feel safe in such a car.

Test subjects use DiDi’s mobile app to plot a ride through suburban roads in a Volvo fitted with a crown of tech hardware topped by a spinning radar device.

The vehicle confidently sets out, accelerating, braking, signalling and turning on its own in real traffic as a female voice calmly narrates: “Yielding for crosswalk.”

When a large truck abruptly swerved in front, DiDi’s AI driver smoothly applied the brake.

Like any student driver, however, it still needs practice. At one stop sign, it braked so abruptly that passengers lurched forward.

Any impromptu deviation from the plotted route still requires human intervention.

But Meng Xing, chief operating officer of DiDi’s autonomous driving company, said its AI system “is already smart enough to handle most of the situations”, and safety drivers almost never need to touch the steering wheel or brakes.

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk, known for his overly rosy predictions, raised eyebrows in July by saying the US electric carmaker could have a completely autonomous car ready this year, which analysts have dismissed.

Paul Lewis, who heads policy research at the Washington-based non-profit Eno Centre for Transportation, says that hopes are being “reset” as the pace of the technology’s development has been rather disappointing.

But Xiao of AutoX expects a “sizeable” deployment of the vehicles — without safety drivers — could take place in two to three years, with regulations and technology being the main obstacles.

Pakistan lose five wickets to England as bad light cuts play short

Pakistan lose five wickets to England as bad light cuts play short
Pakistan were 126-5 against England after a combination of rain and bad light cut short play on the first day of the second Test.

England great James Anderson returned to form with two wickets against Pakistan at Southampton on Thursday as Fawad Alam's long wait for a Test recall ended with a duck.

Anderson had taken 2-35 from 15 overs to move to within eight wickets of becoming the first paceman with 600 in Tests.

All of England's four quicks enjoyed success, with only Pakistan opener Abid Ali — dropped twice in the slips — offering prolonged resistance during an innings of 60.

Anderson came into this match having taken just six wickets in three previous Tests this season, at an expensive average of over 41.

By his own admission, he had not been at his best with a match haul of 1-67 during England's three-wicket win in the first Test at his Old Trafford home ground last week.

But the 38-year-old denied rumours he was considering retirement, with England captain Joe Root saying on the eve of this match: "To question Jimmy's ability and his record — do that at your own peril."

And it was not long before England's all-time leading wicket-taker struck after Pakistan captain Azhar Ali won the toss.

In humid conditions conducive to Anderson's bowling, he needed just eight balls to have Shan Masood, fresh from his Test-best 156, lbw for one with an inswinger to the left-hander.

Masood was so clearly out, he did not bother to review the decision.

Pakistan should have been 7-2 but Abid, on one, was reprieved when third slip Dom Sibley dropped an edge off Stuart Broad.

Azhar, under pressure after a run of just one fifty in 10 innings since becoming skipper in November, was nearly out for seven when, playing defensively at in-form all-rounder Chris Woakes, the ball trickled onto his stumps without dislodging the bails.

Woakes suffered again when he had Abid, on 21, got dropped by second slip Rory Burns.

But Pakistan's luck ran out when Azhar, on 20, edged a full-length Anderson delivery, and this time Burns held a good, low catch to leave Pakistan 78-2.

The only bowlers to have taken more than Anderson's 592 Test wickets are a trio of retired spinners.

Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan leads the way with 800, while Australia's Shane Warne has 708 and India's Anil Kumble 619.

Abid completed a 99-ball fifty featuring six fours after tea.

But left-arm seamer Sam Curran, recalled in place of fast bowler Jofra Archer, had Abid taken in the slips by Burns with a ball that angled across the right-hander following a couple of inswingers.

Sibley, to his evident relief, held a slip catch off Broad as Asad Shafiq fell cheaply.

Alam, a prolific run-scorer in Pakistan domestic cricket, played the last of his three previous Tests, in which he averages over 41, against New Zealand in Dunedin in November 2009.

The 34-year-old was the only change to the side after replacing leg-spinning all-rounder Shadab Khan.

But Alam lasted just five minutes at the crease.

Batting with an extremely open stance, Alam was lbw for a four-ball nought to in-form all-rounder Woakes.

Alam was initially given not out but an England review revealed the ball had pitched in line, with a squared-up Alam in front of his stumps.

England, as well as recalling Curran, made an expected change when batsman Zak Crawley returned in place of Ben Stokes.

Star all-rounder Stokes is missing the final two matches of this series for personal reasons after travelling to New Zealand to be with his ill father.

Princess Diana mulled living with 'love of her life' Dr Hasnat in Pakistan, documentary reveals

Princess Diana and Dr Hasnat
Princess Diana once entertained the idea of moving to Pakistan and living with the "love of her life" Hasnat Khan here, a new documentary "Diana: Her Last Summer" by a royal expert has revealed.

The documentary will air on Channel 5 tonight in the UK, reported Mail Online.

According to the British publication, Eve Pollard, the royal expert behind the film, claimed that the Princess of Wales "had conversations with Jemima Goldsmith about life in the south Asian country".

Goldsmith had been married to Prime Minister Imran Khan from 1995 to 2004, during which the two lived in Lahore.

"The idea that the Princess of Wales was going to marry and live with the Pakistani doctor was not what we were expecting," Pollard said.

"She had long conversations with Jemima Khan, who had married Imran Khan and Diana was wondering if it was something she could do," she added.

Diana went on to make three trips to Pakistan. In the summer of 1997, for what turned out to be her final trip to the country, she flew with Goldsmith to Lahore, on her father James Goldsmith's private jet.

According to Mail Online, Diana took time out during the trip "to secretly meet Hasnat's parents, but the attention it brought shook the foundations of the relationship, which the heart specialist had wanted to keep private".

Hasnat had always known to be private, and so only a few of Diana's confidantes knew about the relationship.

This included Paul Burrell, "who said he used to sneak notoriously private Haznat into the Kensington Palace in the boot of his car", the publication reported.

"I would bring him into Kensington Palace in the boot of my car or underneath a blanket in the backseat of my car," Paul told documentary makers.

"'The police never stopped me and I'd take him off in the back entrance. From there on their romance blossomed and they met him on dates outside of the palace too."

A former BBC royal correspondent, Jennie Bond, said that there had been "rumours for quite a long time that Diana was in love with a heart surgeon but no one knew if it was true".

Recalling her exchange with the princess, she said: "I remember her telling me once that she left the palace to go and watch open heart surgery. She said 'its so important Jennie'."

Another correspondent, Richard Kay, said: "She was enormously attracted to Hasnat. He was such as kind, really solid bloke, there's something slightly Mills and Booms if you like, something about a woman falling in love with a doctor, a heart surgeon no less."

Bond said that when the couple broke up due to mounting pressure from being under public scrutiny, Diana told the correspondent that "no one will ever want her".

Diana went on to spend time with Harrods owner Mohammed Al-Fayed in France, and in particular his son Dodi, both of whom died in a car crash months later.

Paul Burrell, who served as Diana's butler said that the princess "allowed dozens of paparazzi photos in the hope Hasnat would see them".

"Every time Diana rang me she would ask about Hasnat, asking if I'd seen him, if I'd been to his pub, if he'd seen the photos, to see what he said," Paul said

He added: "Haznat was furious that Diana could turn to someone like Dodi, he knew that wasn't his Diana — the son of a multimillionaire and a playboy".

Trump announces 'historic peace agreement' between Israel, UAE

historic peace agreement' between Israel, UAE
In a major breakthrough in relations between the two Middle Eastern nations, Israel and the United Arab Emirates reached a peace agreement on Thursday.

The deal, brokered by US President Donald Trump, will lead to a full normalisation of diplomatic relations between the two nations, a move that reshapes the order of Middle East politics from the Palestinian issue to Iran.

Under the accord, Israel has agreed to suspend annexing areas of the occupied West Bank as it had been planning to do, White House officials said.

It also firms up opposition to regional power Iran, which the UAE, Israel and the United States view as the main threat in the conflict-riven region.

Israel had signed peace agreements with Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994. But the UAE, along with most other Arab nations, did not recognise Israel and had no formal diplomatic or economic relations with it until now.

The agreement was the product of lengthy discussions between Israel, the UAE and the United States that accelerated recently, White House officials said.

A joint statement issued by the three nations said Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed had “agreed to the full normalisation of relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates”.

“This historic diplomatic breakthrough will advance peace in the Middle East region and is a testament to the bold diplomacy and vision of the three leaders and the courage of the United Arab Emirates and Israel to chart a new path that will unlock the great potential in the region,” the statement said.

In a separate statement, the crown prince stressed that the agreement would stop further Israeli annexation of Palestinian territories, which Israel has said had been awaiting a green light from Washington.

The agreement, to be known as the Abraham Accords, also gives Trump a foreign policy accomplishment as he seeks re-election on November 3.

“HUGE breakthrough today! Historic Peace Agreement between our two GREAT friends, Israel and the United Arab Emirates,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

The UAE said it would remain a strong supporter of the Palestinian people and that the normalisation agreement maintained the viability of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Netanyahu said the agreement represented a “historic day” for his country.

But a senior Israeli official said applying Israeli sovereignty to areas of the West Bank — territory Palestinians seek for a state along with Gaza and East Jerusalem — was still on the agenda.

The official said, “The Trump administration asked us to temporarily suspend the (sovereignty) announcement so that the historic peace agreement with the UAE can be implemented.”

Trump’s special envoy Brian Hook said the deal is a “nightmare” for Iran.

Iran and Israel are arch foes. Israel is particularly concerned about suspected Iranian efforts to develop nuclear weapons, which Tehran denies. Iran is also involved in proxy wars from Syria to Yemen, where the UAE has been a leading member of the Saudi-led coalition opposing Iran-aligned forces there.

Delegations from Israel and the United Arab Emirates will meet in the coming weeks to sign agreements regarding investment, tourism, direct flights, security, telecommunications and other issues, the statement said.

The two countries are expected soon to exchange ambassadors and embassies.

The statement said that “as a result of this diplomatic breakthrough and at the request of President Trump with the support of the United Arab Emirates, Israel will suspend declaring sovereignty” over areas of the West Bank that were envisioned in a US plan announced by Trump in January.

In the White House Oval Office, Trump said similar deals are being discussed with other countries in the region. A signing ceremony including delegations from Israel and the United Arab Emirates will be held at the White House in the coming weeks, Trump added.

“Everybody said this would be impossible,” Trump said. “After 49 years, Israel and the United Arab Emirates will fully normalise their diplomatic relations. They exchange embassies and ambassadors and begin cooperation across the border.”

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson welcomed the agreement as "hugely good news".

“The UAE and Israel’s decision to normalise relations is hugely good news,” Johnson said on Twitter.

“It was my profound hope that annexation did not go ahead in the West Bank and today’s agreement to suspend those plans is a welcome step on the road to a more peaceful Middle East.”

Foreign minister Dominic Raab said it was “time for direct talks between the Palestinians and Israel, the only route to lasting peace.”

Pakistan has left no stone unturned in raising Kashmiris' plight: DG ISPR

The chief of the Pakistan Army's media wing, Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar
The chief of the Pakistan Army's media wing, Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar, is addressing a press conference.

The director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) started the news conference by speaking about Indian oppression in occupied Kashmir.

"Azaadi is a huge blessing," he said. "Ask about the importance of freedom from the mother of an occupied Kashmir resident that buries her son with the Pakistan flag."

"In occupied Kashmir, the inhumane siege has continued for one year. Genocide is being done and human rights are being violated through India's state terrorism in the occupied [region].

"Under a pre-planned, thought-out plan, India by changing the demography of the region is trying to evict the Muslims living there," Maj Gen Iftikhar said.

"There is no atrocity left which the Kashmiris have not witnessed. Youths are being martyred and being buried in unnamed places in the name of counter-terrorism."

He noted that the targeting of Kashmiris with pellet guns by the Indian forces has become the norm while the region's local leadership has been kept in detention for one year.

"The Government of Pakistan at all regional and international forums has raised awareness on the Kashmir issue and voices against the oppression are reverberating in the world's corridors."

Genocide Watch and international media have unmasked India's actions in the occupied valley while the United Nations secretary general has stressed human rights in Kashmir, the DG ISPR said.

He said Pakistan has "left no stone unturned" in raising Kashmiris' plight before the world.

China warns US against ‘playing with fire’ over Taiwan visit

China warns US against ‘playing with fire’ over Taiwan visit
China warned Washington not to “play with fire” on Wednesday as a US delegation wrapped up a historic trip to the self-ruled island of Taiwan.

Beijing has been infuriated by the highest-profile visit in decades to Taiwan, which it sees as part of its territory, as US-China relations plunge to a record low over a range of issues from trade to military and the coronavirus pandemic.

Health chief Alex Azar finished a three-day visit to Taiwan, during which he criticised China’s handling of the pandemic and visited the shrine of a former Taiwan president hated by the Communist Party leadership.

Beijing slammed the visit on Wednesday and said it “firmly opposes official exchanges between the US and Taiwan under any pretext”.

“On issues involving China’s core interests, some people in the US must not harbour illusions, those who play with fire will get burned,” said foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian at a regular press briefing. “I would also like to remind the Taiwan authorities not to be...subservient to others, to rely on the support of foreigners, and to be bent on pursuing independence, which is a dead end,” Zhao said.

Beijing insists that Taiwan — which has been self-ruled since 1949 — is part of “one China” and has vowed to react with force if it ever formally declares independence.

On the last day of the trip, Azar visited a shrine to Taiwan’s late president Lee Teng-hui on Wednesday, praising his role in steering the island’s transition to democracy.

The US cabinet member wrote a message of condolence for Lee, who died last month aged 97.

Pakistan win toss, opt to bat first in 2nd England Test

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in the second Test against England at Ageas Bowl in South Hampton.
Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in the second Test against England at Ageas Bowl in South Hampton.

Both the teams made changes to the squad with Fawad Alam coming in place of Shadab Khan to play his first Test since 2009.

England, 1-0 up in a three-match series being played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus, made two changes.

As expected, top-order batsman Zak Crawley returned in place of Ben Stokes after it was announced the star all-rounder would miss the final two matches of this series for personal reasons after travelling to New Zealand to be with his ill father.

Crawley has missed England's last two Tests, when an extra seamer was included to compensate for pace bowler Stokes´s quad injury.

Meanwhile fast bowler Jofra Archer was officially "rested", with England in the middle of a gruelling schedule of six Tests in seven weeks following their 2-1 series win at home to the West Indies last month.

Archer's place was taken by left-arm seamer Sam Curran, who has been on the winning side in all his previous eight home Tests.

England won the first Test in Manchester against Pakistan in dramatic fashion beating the hosts by three wickets.

Chasing a challenging target of 277, England lost five wickets for only 117 runs but Buttler and Woakes came to rescue and batted cautiously and confidently to add 139 runs for the sixth wicket partnership.

This was a remarkable achievement as only for the third time a team chased more than 200 to win in the fourth innings of a Test at Old Trafford, with England making 294-4 against New Zealand in 2008 and 231-3 against the West Indies at the Manchester ground in 2004.

Buttler made 75 from 101 balls with seven fours and a six while Woakes remained not out on 84. His 120-ball innings was laced with ten boundaries.

Playing XI

England:

Rory Burns, Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley, Joe Root (capt), Ollie Pope, Jos Butler (wk), Chris Woakes, Dom Bess, Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, James Anderson

Pakistan:

Shan Masood, Abid Ali, Azhar Ali (capt), Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq, Fawad Alam, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Yasir Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Abbas, Naseem Shah

Facebook and Twitter battle against misinformation on US elections

The finer details of the step are still being finalised
Twitter and Facebook have announced they will be stepping up their fight against misinformation in the upcoming presidential elections.

Facebook is starting a hub to help users with poll-related resources, while Twitter is expanding rules against misinformation on mail-in ballots and early voting.

The move comes as online social networks have been drawing flak for what has been called a lax approach to fake news reports and misinformation campaigns, which many believe affected the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

Twitter’s move will involve coming up with new policies “that emphasise accurate information about all available options to vote, including by mail and early voting.”

“We’re focused on empowering every eligible person to register and vote through partnerships, tools and new policies,” Jessica Herrera-Flanigan, Twitter’s vice president for public policy in the Americas, told Reuters in an email.

Facebook, meanwhile, launched a Voting Information Center to help users with accurate and easy-to-find information about voting wherever they live.

The company said in a blog it was also speaking with officials about misinformation surrounding election results as an emerging threat.

Twitter said it would roll out measures on new tools, policies and voting resources in the next month. It is exploring how to expand its “civic integrity policies” to address mischaracterisations of mail-in voting and other procedures.

The finer details of the step are still being finalised.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed without evidence that voting by mail, which is expected to increase dramatically due to the coronavirus outbreak, is susceptible to large-scale fraud.

The process is not new in the United States — nearly one in four voters cast 2016 presidential ballots that way.

Many experts have said that routine methods and the decentralised nature of US elections make it very hard to interfere with mailed ballots.

PIA pilots are overpaid, spend on luxurious hotels loss billions rupees to the airlines

PIA pilots are overpaid
Pilots of the state-run Pakistan International Airlines are overpaid despite low productivity and spend on luxurious hotels causing a loss of billions of rupees to the airlines.

The report, compiled by officials of the PIA and the Civil Aviation Authority, states that the productivity of pilots “was extremely low with respect to industry standards". The airline pilots “were highly paid” even though 49% to 81% “were not even completing their flying hours.”

The internal audit also discloses that PIA pilots and cabin crews spend unnecessary amounts on expensive hotel stays in the country and when travelling out of the country, leading to a loss of billions of rupees. “The expenditure is totally unjustified,” the report notes.

During a stay in Karachi, the crew chooses to book five-star hotels, even though the PIA “owns a hotel in Karachi with a capacity of 300 rooms.”

The expenditure of the national flag carrier, the report adds, could have been saved if the crew and pilots utilized in-house facilities.

Similarly, when the crews travelled to international stations, it chose luxurious hotels over budgeted ones, resulting in a loss of nearly Rs408 million.

A further breakdown, provided in the report, states that Rs14 million were spent in hotel stays in Bangkok, Rs27 million in Beijing, Rs8 million in Birmingham, Rs26 million in Dubai, Rs2.4 million in Jeddah, Rs9 million in Kuwait, Rs1 million in Kuala Lumpur, Rs214 million in London, Rs27 million in Manchester, Rs2 million Oslo, Rs72 million in Paris and Rs7 million in Toronto.

PIA pilots, the reports adds, are highly paid with no productivity. “There is no accountability mechanism that ensures maximum output from the cabinet/cockpit crew.” Furthermore, it adds, the transfer postings of cabin crew are not merit based.

The report recommends that the hotel arrangements for both cabin crews and pilots be reviewed and those hotels should be approved which are close to the airports “to save funds.”

It also suggests revising the perks and pay scales of pilots.

10 of the Best Foods to Help You Heal

Here are 10 healing foods that can help your body recover.
The foods and beverages you consume can either help or hinder your recovery.

Many foods, including fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and protein sources, have been shown to reduce inflammation, improve immune function, promote healing, and provide the fuel necessary for you to get on the mend.

Here are 10 healing foods that can help your body recover.

1. Leafy green vegetables

Leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, arugula, mustard greens, and Swiss chard are packed with nutrients that decrease inflammation, enhance immune function, and improve wound healing, making them the perfect choice to promote recovery.

Leafy greens are high in vitamin C, manganese, magnesium, folate, and provitamin A, all of which are essential for immune function and overall health.

They’re also rich in polyphenol antioxidants that have powerful anti-inflammatory and immune-supportive properties.

In fact, research shows that certain polyphenols, including the antioxidant quercetin, that are concentrated in green leafy veggies, may help suppress the production of inflammatory proteins like TNF-alpha.

What’s more, vitamin C is essential for wound healing, making leafy greens a good choice when recuperating after surgery.

2. Eggs

Following surgery, your body needs significantly more protein than the current Recommended Daily Allowance of 0.36 grams per pound of body weight.

The American Society for Enhanced Recovery recommends 0.7–0.9 grams of protein per pound of body weight after surgery. That equals 105–135 grams for a 150-pound person.

Eggs are not only an excellent source of highly absorbable protein, providing 6 grams per large egg (50 grams), but also nutrients that support immune health and wound healing.

Whole eggs contain vitamins A and B12, as well as zinc, iron, and selenium, all of which play vital immune roles.

3. Salmon

Salmon is packed with protein, B vitamins, selenium, iron, zinc, and omega-3 fats.

What’s more, studies show that its omega-3 fats may promote wound healing, enhance immune response, and reduce inflammation when taken in supplement form.

Plus, just 3 ounces of wild-caught salmon delivers over 70% of your daily needs for selenium, a mineral that regulates inflammation and immune response.

Although eating salmon is likely safe, you should talk to your healthcare provider before taking fish oil supplements before or after surgery. Recent research indicates that these supplements don’t increase bleeding risk, but some surgeons advise against fish oil anyway.

4. Berries

Berries are brimming with nutrients and plant compounds that can help support your body’s recovery.

For instance, berries provide ample vitamin C, which promotes wound healing by stimulating the production of collagen the most abundant protein in your body.

They also pack antioxidants like anthocyanins, which are plant pigments that give berries their vibrant color, in addition to providing anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immune-supporting effects.

5. Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds like almonds, pecans, walnuts, sunflower seeds, and hemp seeds are a great choice for fueling your body during the recovery process. These foods provide plant-based protein, healthy fats, and vitamins and minerals that support healing.

For example, nuts and seeds are a good source of zinc, vitamin E, manganese, and magnesium. Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant in your body, protecting against cellular damage. It’s also critical for immune health.

Some studies note that healthy vitamin E levels may improve the function of protective immune cells, such as natural killer cells, which help fight infection and disease.

6. Poultry

Specific amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, play important roles in wound healing and immune function.

Poultry, including chicken and turkey, pack glutamine and arginine, two amino acids that may aid recovery and healing.

Glutamine provides cellular protection during times of stress, such as illness and injury, while arginine assists collagen production and wound healing.

What’s more, arginine is rapidly depleted during times of stress, injury, and illness, making adequate intake of this amino acid all the more important.

7. Organ meats

Organ meats are some of the most nutritious foods you can eat. They boast many immune-supportive nutrients, including vitamin A, iron, zinc, B vitamins, and copper, which is needed for the production of connective tissue and collagen.

Vitamin A, which is essential for proper immune cell response, helps inhibit inflammatory cells and is critical for skin health and wound healing.

Additionally, organ meats are an excellent source of protein, which is necessary for recovery after surgery and illness.

8. Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and kale are well known for their impressive health benefits. They may support recovery thanks to their wide variety of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Cruciferous veggies contain glucosinolates, which are compounds that your body converts into isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates have been shown to promote immune health by suppressing inflammation, activating immune defenses, and inducing death in infected cells.

Plus, these veggies pack an array of nutrients that your body craves during recovery, such as vitamin C and B vitamins.

9. Shellfish

Shellfish like oysters, mussels, and clams are loaded with nutrients especially zinc that may promote recovery.

Zinc is crucial for healthy immune function. This mineral may also help speed recovery and promote wound healing, making shellfish great for recuperating from surgery.

10. Sweet potatoes

Eating healthy high carb foods, such as sweet potatoes, is important for recovery. Carbs not only provide the energy your cells require for healing but also enzymes like hexokinase and citrate synthase, which aid wound repair.

In fact, inadequate carb intake may impair wound healing and delay recovery.

Sweet potatoes are nutritious carb sources that are packed with anti-inflammatory plant compounds, vitamins, and minerals including vitamin C, carotenoids, and manganese that may optimize immune response and help your body recover.

Halo game delayed until 2021 due to ongoing impacts from COVID-19

Xbox Series X game console is expected to launch later this year
Halo Infinite, the next instalment of celebrated video game franchise, is being delayed until next year.

Its developer said, meaning the blockbuster title will not be available when Microsoft launches its new console later this year.

Multiple factors including ongoing impacts from COVID-19 led to the move, according to a statement posted late Tuesday by 343 Industries.

"We have made the difficult decision to shift our release to 2021 to ensure the team has adequate time to deliver a Halo game experience that meets our vision," said the studio's head, Chris Lee.

The military science fiction first-person shooter game is one of the best-selling game franchises, and Halo Infinite will be the sixth instalment.

Microsoft's new Xbox Series X game console is expected to launch later this year.

Releases of new games are often timed to drive sales of new consoles ahead of the holidays, and Halo was expected to a major boost for the Xbox Series X.

Lee acknowledged the delay would disappoint fans, but said "it is not sustainable for the well-being of our team or the overall success of the game to ship it this holiday."

Both Microsoft and Sony are updating their game consoles this year, offering much higher performance capabilities than the current generation that were launched in 2013
