Saudi Arabia gets its first wind farm

Saudi Arabia gets its first wind farm
Dumat Al Jandal, the Middle East’s largest wind farm and the first in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is now connected to the grid and has produced its first carbon-free megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy.

The 400-megawatt (MW) utility-scale wind power project is being developed by a consortium led by EDF Renewables and Masdar, two of the world’s leading renewable energy companies.

The wind farm consists of 99 wind turbines from supplier and EPC contractor Vestas, each with a power output of 4.2 MW. Construction began in September 2019, and the wind turbine erection works are near completion.

When complete, the wind farm will generate carbon-free energy, powering up to 70,000 Saudi households, while saving 988,000 tonnes of CO2 per year in support of the Kingdom’s climate change mitigation goals.

Olivier Marchand, Project Director of Dumat Al Jandal Wind Co for Energy LLC, stated, “We are delighted to start the early power production of this unique large-scale wind project in KSA – Dumat Al Jandal wind farm.

The outstanding commitment shown by our teams and contractors with the implementation of the highest health and safety standards and the full support provided by the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Energy, Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPCC) and the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) have contributed to the successful execution of the project during this extremely challenging pandemic period. We are now looking forward to successfully reaching, with our partners and contractors, the full commissioning of the project in the months to come.”

Osama Al Othman, Country Representative, Saudi Arabia, Masdar, said, “Masdar is proud to be leveraging its experience in renewable energy to deliver the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s first wind farm in collaboration with our partners. The successful connection of the project to the electricity transmission grid marks an important milestone for this landmark project in the Kingdom and we look forward to project’s completion in the near future. As a global leader in the development of commercially viable wind power, Masdar is committed to advancing clean technology across the region and we will continue our efforts to support the country’s ambitious energy program.”

The wind farm is also contributing to the region’s economic activity, creating more than 600 local jobs during the construction phase. The project has also achieved a significant health and safety milestone by securing 1.8 million man-hours without a single lost-time injury (LTI) as a result of the strict health and safety procedures on site.

The Dumat Al Jandal wind farm will supply electricity under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company, a subsidiary of the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC), the Saudi power generation and distribution company.

KNIFE ATTACKER ON COMMUTER TRAIN WANTED TO KILL ‘HAPPY WOMEN’

KNIFE ATTACKER ON COMMUTER TRAIN WANTED TO KILL ‘HAPPY WOMEN’
The man alleged to have wounded 10 people in a knife attack on a Tokyo commuter train late on Friday told police he became incensed when he saw women who “looked happy” and wanted to kill them, Japanese media reported on Saturday.

Police arrested the 36-year-old man in another part of Tokyo after he slashed and stabbed people in the attack at about 8:40 pm (1140 GMT) on Friday on a train on the Odakyu Line in the western part of the city, media reported.

One victim, a female university student, was seriously wounded, while the rest suffered less severe injuries.

The Sankei newspaper reported that suspect told police: “I began feeling like I wanted to kill women who looked happy about six years ago. Anyone was fine, I just wanted to kill a lot of people.”

Other media, including broadcaster NHK, reported similar quotes from suspect.

A police spokesman said they had nothing further to share on the details of case when asked about the media reports on Saturday.

Violent crime is rare in Japan but there have been a spate of knife attacks by assailants unknown to the victims.

In June 2008, a man in a light truck drove into a crowd in the popular Akihabara district and then jumped out of the vehicle and started stabbing pedestrians, leaving seven dead.

Britain tells nationals to leave Afghanistan immediately due to 'worsening security situation'

Britain tells nationals to leave Afghanistan immediately due to 'worsening security situation'
Britain has warned all UK nationals in Afghanistan to leave the country immediately due to the "worsening security situation" as fighting intensifies.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on Friday updated its website to advise against all travel to Afghanistan.

"All British nationals in Afghanistan are advised to leave now by commercial means. If you are still in Afghanistan, you are advised to leave now by commercial means because of the worsening security situation," it said.

The foreign office warned Britons not to rely on it for emergency evacuation, saying the assistance it could provide was "extremely limited".

The warning comes after the Taliban launched a major offensive to coincide with the withdrawal of US-led foreign forces after nearly two decades of conflict.

"Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Afghanistan. Specific methods of attack are evolving and increasing in sophistication," the foreign office said.

The Taliban now control vast swathes of rural Afghanistan and are challenging government forces in several cities, including Herat, near the western border with Iran, and Lashkar Gah and Kandahar in the south.

On Friday, the militants captured their first provincial capital since stepping up their offensive in May.

Zaranj, the capital of the southwest province of Nimroz, fell "without a fight", deputy provincial governor Roh Gul Khairzad told AFP.

India not inviting Pakistan to UNSC meeting on Afghanistan violated Council rules: Munir Akram

Ambassador Munir Akram
Pakistan debunked Friday Afghan and Indian allegations about the existence of safe havens and cross-border movement of Taliban fighters as "mere fantasies", saying that the Pakistani government has fenced the Pak-Afghan border which is now closed.

At a press conference hours after the UN Security Council meeting, Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan's permanent representative to the United Nations, also criticised India, the council president for the month of August, for denying Pakistan the opportunity to address the 15-member body as a neighbouring country with a vital stake in peace in Afghanistan.

"We made a formal request for participation but it was denied," he told reporters at the UN Headquarters in New York. "Obviously, we do not expect fairness from the Indian presidency for Pakistan."

Akram said not inviting Pakistan to the UNSC meeting on Afghanistan violated Security Council rules.

Pakistan's complete statement will be will be circulated to the UNSC members, the Pakistani envoy said.

He said there were no terrorist safe havens left after Pakistani military's effective operations in Waziristan and other areas, and that the fencing of the border was now 97% complete to prevent cross-border movement.

Ambassador Akram also slammed regional “spoilers” who he said were attempting to derail the Afghan peace process.

He warned against spoilers, "both within and outside Afghanistan” against their machinations to promote their vested interests.

Ambassador Akram said that Pakistan was suffering from a spate of attacks from Tehreek-i-Pakistan and Da'esh terrorists from the Afghan territory. "So, the shoe is on the other foot."

The Pakistani envoy said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had consistently called for a political solution as the only way to restore durable peace and security in Afghanistan.

"Pakistan therefore welcomed the international consensus which has emerged that the best means of securing peace and stability is through a political solution negotiated between parties to the conflict," he said.

Pakistan has made earnest efforts to promote such a political settlement, Ambassador Akram said, pointing out that in 2015, a political settlement was scuttled by the deliberate revelation of the demise of the then Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

Pakistan, he said, was instrumental in bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table in 2019, and facilitated the conclusion of the US-Taliban agreement of February 2020.

"We helped convene the intra-Afghan negotiations in Doha in September 2020," he said while highlighting Pakistan's role in the peace process.

In UNSC meeting, Afghanistan seeks Pakistan's help in 'dismantling' Taliban

Pakistan should help Afghanistan in "dismantling" the Taliban for peace to prosper in the war-torn country, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations Ghulam M Isaczai had said.

The Afghan ambassador's comments came during an open meeting of the UNSC on the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan.

The discussion was requested by the Afghan government, as well as Norway and Estonia. The Security Council last met on Afghanistan in June, but the situation in the conflict-ridden country has rapidly worsened since then.

Peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban negotiators started last year in the Qatari capital of Doha, but have not made any substantive progress.

Isaczai, who represented Foreign Minister Haneef Atmar in the meeting, said the Taliban had launched brutal attacks which had caused further instability in the country.

"It is our job to stop it."

Seven die after outbreak of Colombian variant of Covid-19 at Belgian nursing home

Seven die after outbreak of Colombian variant of Covid-19 at Belgian nursing home
Seven residents of a nursing home in Belgium have died after being infected with the Colombian variant of the coronavirus, despite being fully vaccinated, the virology team that conducted tests said on Friday.

The variant of COVID-19 that originated in Colombia, or B.1.621, has been detected in recent weeks in the United States but cases in Europe have been rare.

The seven people who died at the nursing home in the Belgian town of Zaventem, near Brussels, were all in their 80s or 90s, and some of them were already in a poor physical condition, said Marc Van Ranst, a virologist at the University of Leuven which conducted tests on the strain found at the nursing home.

“It is worrisome,” Van Ranst said, commenting on the fact that the residents died despite being fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

So far, scientists do not know if the Colombian variant is more transmissible than other variants, he said.

In Belgium, the variant currently accounts for less than 1% of known cases of COVID-19, he said, compared to 2% of cases in the United States and more than that in Florida.

At the nursing home in Zaventem, 21 residents were infected with the variant along with several members of staff, Van Ranst told Reuters. The infected staff experienced only mild symptoms.

Van Ranst said the dominant coronavirus variant in Belgium with around 95% of infections is the Delta, first discovered in India, followed by the Alpha that was previously dominant in Britain.

Additional tests will be run on Friday to rule out any possibility that the nursing home residents died from a different variant of the virus or a different respiratory disease, Van Ranst said.

“It is unlikely but not impossible,” he said.

Early signs Covid-19 vaccines may not stop Delta transmission, England says

Covid-19 vaccines
There are early signs that people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 may be able to transmit the Delta variant of the virus as easily as those who have not, scientists at Public Health England (PHE) said on Friday.

The findings chime with those from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which last week raised concerns that vaccinated people infected with Delta could, unlike with other variants, readily transmit it.

The highly infectious Delta variant has become the dominant coronavirus type globally, sustaining a pandemic that has already killed more than 4.4 million people.

Vaccines have been shown to provide good protection against severe disease and death from Delta, especially with two doses, but there is less data on whether vaccinated people can still transmit it to others.

"Some initial findings ... indicate that levels of virus in those who become infected with Delta having already been vaccinated may be similar to levels found in unvaccinated people," PHE said in a statement.

"This may have implications for people's infectiousness, whether they have been vaccinated or not. However, this is early exploratory analysis and further targeted studies are needed to confirm whether this is the case."

PHE said that of confirmed Delta cases that had ended up hospitalised since July 19, 55.1 per cent were unvaccinated, while 34.9pc had received two doses of a Covid-19 vaccine.

Nearly 75pc of the British population has had two vaccine doses, and PHE said that "as more of the population gets vaccinated, we will see a higher relative percentage of vaccinated people in hospital".

Separately, PHE said another variant, known as B.1.621, first detected in Colombia, had shown signs of evading the immune response triggered by either Covid-19 vaccines or previous infection.

PHE has labelled the variant "under investigation" but has not declared it a "variant of concern" — a designation that can trigger strong policy responses.

"There is preliminary laboratory evidence to suggest that vaccination and previous infection may be less effective at preventing infection with (B.1.621)," it said, adding there had been 37 confirmed cases of the variant in England.

"However, this data is very limited and more research is required. There is no evidence to suggest that (it) is more transmissible than the dominant Delta variant."

KPL 2021: Organisers set up bio-secure bubble for players, staff members

Kashmir Premier League
With thousands of fans waiting with baited breath for the Kashmir Premier League (KPL) action to kick off today (Friday), the management has placed all players, management and support staff members in the league's bio-secure bubble as part of a safety protocol to protect them from the coronavirus.

The decision to place players, management and support staff members has become a necessary move considering the outbreak of the coronavirus over the past year or so.

The development takes place at a time when the Delta variant of the coronavirus has wreaked havoc in several countries around the world, and has led to a surge of coronavirus cases in both India and Pakistan.

Bio-secure bubble

A bio-secure bubble or a bubble is a new terminology that emerged in the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic that is rampaging around the globe since December 2019. It is a hosting arrangement for sporting events. It requires events to be held at a centralized site.

It usually involves quarantining strictly and following safety protocols to curb the chance of infections spreading among those in the bubble.

A bio-secure bubble comprises sites close to each other, including player residences (such as hotels), training facilities, and the event's venue. The bio-secure protocols require that all participants, including players, team crew and other staff (such as broadcasting staff present on-site) to be properly screened and tested for COVID-19 before entering it. They may not leave it until the event concludes.

All 100 rooms available at the local hotel have been reserved for KPL teams and officials. Also, the teams have been assigned separate timings for breakfast and gym training in accordance with the Covid-19 SOPs.

All six teams have been divided into two groups for training purposes in order to avoid crowding at spaces.

The KPL management has also limited the number of spectators visiting the grounds to watch the live action of the cricketing event.

Only 30% of spectators will be allowed to come to the ground to watch the KPL matches, said President KPL Arif Malik while talking to Geo News.

"Only vaccinated people will be able to come to the ground," he specified.

The KPL chief also announced that a vaccination centre will be set up at the game venue with the help of the local government. Spectators will also have to follow basic Covid-19 SOPs as long as they are on the ground, said Arif Malik.

Lionel Messi to leave Barcelona due to financial constraint

Lionel Messi
Argentina striker Lionel Messi will leave Barcelona despite both parties having reached an agreement over a new contract, the La Liga club said on Thursday, citing economic and structural obstacles to the renewal of deal.

"Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish La Liga regulations)," Barca said in a statement.

"As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.

"FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life."

Messi was free to negotiate a transfer with other clubs after his deal ran out at the end of June, but Barcelona had always maintained he wanted to stay with the club. The 34-year-old was reported to sign a new five-year deal.

Messi had tried to leave Barcelona in August 2020, making a formal request for an exit after a break down in his relationship with then president Josep Maria Bartomeu but successor Joan Laporta, who presided over the Argentine's rise to greatness, convinced him to stay.

Messi, who joined Barca's youth set up aged 13, is the club's all-time top scorer and appearance maker with 672 goals in 778 games in all competitions.

NA passes unanimous resolution condemning attack on Hindu temple in Rahim Yar Khan

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Mohammad Khan
The National Assembly has passed a unanimous resolution condemning Wednesday's attack on a Hindu temple by a charged mob in Bhong village of Punjab's Rahim Yar Khan district.

The incident saw hundreds of people vandalise the temple and block the Sukkur-Multan Motorway (M-5) after a nine-year-old Hindu boy, who allegedly urinated in a local seminary, was granted bail by a local court.

"This House strongly condemns the ransacking of the temple," the resolution reads, adding that Prime Minister Imran Khan had also condemned the incident and issued instructions to bring the culprits to justice.

"The Constitution of Pakistan provides complete protection to the rights of minorities and this House also affirms that rights of minorities and their places of worship will be fully protected. The whole nation and government are united on this point.

"Islam completely protects the rights of minorities. The House reassures the Hindu community and Pakistan Hindu Council of their safety," the resolution reads.

The parliamentary affairs minister, in his comments to the House, said: "Whoever has done this action in Bhong has nothing to do with Islam or humanity. Religious scholars have strictly condemned this."

He further said a range of officials from the prime minister to top officeholders of the provincial governments had censured the incident.

"As humans and as Muslims we are deeply saddened by this [...] we are all one on this issue [...] because we ourselves have suffered [religious discrimination] and we cry about Babri Mosque and injustice in occupied Kashmir," said Khan.

"I want to state on behalf of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the government, the opposition and our senior leadership that at this time the whole country, government and this House express sympathy and grief with the minority community, particularly the Hindu community, and reassure them of every kind of protection," he said.

The minister further said the government had always condemned such incidents and that the entire state apparatus and civil society stood with minorities at such times, which he said was in contrast to India where "[Narendra] Modi's Hindutva RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) government stands with the perpetrators".

Meanwhile, Federal Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari said the Ministry of Human Rights was in contact with Rahim Yar Khan police and a first information report was already registered and suspects were being arrested.

"The prime minister has given his commitment that the government will restore the temple at its expense," she said as she asked for the issue to not be politicised.

PPP MNA Syed Naveed Qamar said that any incidents related to places of worship needed to be collectively condemned and solutions devised to prevent their reoccurrence.

He also criticised the local administration for taking the matter lightly instead of trying to preemptively solve it.

'Fascist ideology can't rule here'
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry, addressing a media briefing on the matter today in Islamabad, said: "The people who hurt the religious sentiments of our Hindu brothers should be meted exemplary punishment and we should stand against every person who targets our Pakistani brothers on the basis of colour, race and religion."

Chaudhry said he was "very clear" that respecting the two colours in Pakistan's flag was "obligatory on us".

"The white colour is as respectable for us as the green colour in the flag and it represents the rights of minorities who live in Pakistan," he said, adding: "Pakistan is not India, No fascist ideology can rule here."

The prime minister, the political and military leadership and the courts accepted the Constitution, which promises the protection of minority rights for the sake of a progressive country, the information minister said.

"I am very happy that the prime minister took personal notice of the issue and now the chief justice of Pakistan has also taken notice," he said.

Chaudhry said that Pakistan's future was of a progressive country where minorities would be "completely safe".

Awn Chaudhry tenders resignation as special coordinator to CM Punjab

Special Coordinator to Chief Minister Punjab on Political Affairs Awn Chaudhry
Special Coordinator to Chief Minister Punjab on Political Affairs Awn Chaudhry has tendered his resignation after he was asked to disassociate himself from the Jahangir Tareen group or step down from the post.

According to sources Chaudhry was told to stop lobbying for the PTI faction, which he refused, instead turning in a prepared resignation letter which he had brought with him.

Chaudhry shared the letter with the media during prayer break and said he knew why he was called to meet CM Buzdar.

In the letter, the PTI leader expressed anger over the treatment meted out him by the party whom he said he had served selflessly.

“I served PTI, wholeheartedly, completely ignoring my personal life and family for a cause. Sadly I was 'rewarded' by being removed right before the oath-taking ceremony of the Prime Minister which I accepted with grace,” he stated.

“I was then made Advisor to the CM without any portfolio in Punjab and again I was removed unceremoniously and I even accepted that.”

In a strong show of support for the former PTI secretary general, Awn Chaudhry said he was asked to distance himself from Jahangir Tareen but he prefers to submit his resignation instead.

“Everyone knows that Jahangir Khan Tareen is the person who played a pivotal role in the struggle of PTI and keeping in view his efforts for the success of PTI in 2018 Elections and formation of PTI Govt in the Centre and Punjab, my conscience does not allow me to abandon my association with the most loyal member of PTI who served selflessly as I have.”

He added: “I prefer to submit my resignation from the post of Special Coordinator to the CM, to stand by Mr Tareen and his Group. I have always put my trust in Allah and He has always guided me and will continue to guide me in future Insha Allah.”

Hindu temple attack: CJP Gulzar orders police to arrest all culprits

Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed
Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed Friday reprimanded the Punjab police chief for failing to take action to safeguard the Hindu temple from a mob in Rahim Yar Khan, directing him to arrest all culprits involved in the incident.

Chief Justice Gulzar had taken suo moto notice of the attack on the temple in village Bhong, after meeting with Ramesh Kumar, MNA and Patron-in-Chief Pakistan Hindu Council.

Over a dozen men, armed with sticks, had vandaliseda Hindu temple in Rahim Yar Khan, shouting slogans and desecrating idols in the place of worship. The video clip of the incident went viral on social media, drawing sharp criticism from rights activists in Pakistan.

Justice Gulzar had shown concern over the tragic incident and summoned the chief secretary Punjab and IGP Punjab to appear at the apex court and submit a report on the incident.

During the hearing today, the CJP expressed displeasure over the incident and reprimanded the officials, saying the attack has done serious damage to Pakistan's reputation around the globe.

He said the police acted as a silent spectator while the mob vandalised the temple. “What were the police and administration doing?” the CJP asked.

To this, IGP Inam Ghani said the assistant commissioner and ASP were present at the scene, and that the administration’s priority was to provide security to the 70 Hindu families near the temple.

“Terrorism clauses have been added in the FIR,” he said.

“If the deputy commissioner and the DPO cannot perform their duties, they should be fired,” CJP Gulzar stressed.

IG Inam Ghani informed the court that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the case, when Justice Qazi Amin asked as to what action had the police taken.

Additional Attorney General Sohail Mehmood said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had taken notice of the matter.

At this, CJP Gulzar said the court would focus on the legal perspective of the case.

“Three days have passed, but no one has been arrested,” said the chief justice, disappointed.

Justice Amin said police has failed to perform its duty.

“Had there been professional officers in the force, the issue would have been solved by now,” the top judge observed, adding that one should ponder over how the incident has impacted Pakistani Hindus.

“Think, how would Muslims have reacted if a mosque was attacked,” he remarked.

He also inquired about an 8-year-old Hindu boy who was arrested by the police. The Punjab police chief informed the bench that the boy was presented before a magistrate first.

“What do you expect from an 8-year-old? What does an 8-year-old know about religion? Do the police have any idea about the mind of a young kid?”

At this, Justice Gulzar ordered to remove the SHO who arrested him.

Issuing directives to take action against the culprits, the Supreme Court ordered the officials to submit a report on the next hearing, which has been scheduled on August 13.

The SC also ordered to establish Peace Committees to ensure religious harmony among followers of different faiths.

Ebrahim Raeisi takes oath of office at parliament as Iran’s eighth president

Ebrahim Raeisi
After having his mandate endorsed by Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Ebrahim Raeisi has taken the oath of office to be officially inaugurated as the eighth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Iranian parliament on Thursday afternoon, attended by high-ranking Iranian civil and military officials as well as a great number of foreign dignitaries from more than 80 countries.

The ceremony started with a speech by Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf followed by an address delivered by head of Iran’s Judiciary Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei.

After speeches were delivered by heads of the Judiciary and Legislature, Ebrahim Raeisi took to the podium to be sworn in as Iran’s eighth president following the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

During the oath-taking ceremony, Raeisi read out the text of the oath, which says, "I, as the President, upon the Holy Qur'an and in the presence of the Iranian nation, do hereby swear in the name of Almighty God to safeguard the official Faith, the system of the Islamic republic and the Constitution of the country; to use all my talents and abilities in the discharge of responsibilities undertaken by me; to devote myself to the service of the people, glory of the country, promotion of religion and morality, support of right and propagation of justice; to refrain from being autocratic; to protect the freedom and dignity of individuals and the rights of the nation recognized by the Constitution; to spare no efforts in safeguarding the frontiers and the political, economic and cultural freedoms of the country; to guard the power entrusted to me by the nation as a sacred trust like an honest and faithful trustee, by seeking help from God and following the example of the Prophet of Islam and the sacred Imams, peace be upon them, and to entrust it to the one elected by the nation after me."

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf first welcomed the Iranian and foreign guests of the ceremony.

Iran’s top diplomat then focused on the problems facing the country and the nation in his speech, especially economic problems, stressing the importance of taking decisive steps to solve people’s problems without bringing any excuses.

“We have entered a new phase of management in the country. The [Iranian] people, through their participation in the parliamentary and presidential elections, gave us the opportunity to solve people’s problems, particularly those problems that are nagging the underprivileged and middle classes, in order to prove that a Jihadi (strong and relentless) managerial system is the solution to all material and spiritual problems in the country,” he said.

Iran’s parliament speaker emphasized the importance of boosting the efficiency and accountability in the country to make progress during the new phase of governance, saying that all Iranian officials are duty-bound to restore the economic stability, hope and cheerfulness to the country and its people.

The administration shoulders the main responsibility in this regard because it possesses the highest executive capacities of the country, Qalibaf said, adding, however, that synergy and cooperation among all branches of the government will play a leading role in solving the country’s problems.

“We know that the enemy’s threats and sanctions have created difficulties in the country’s management, but there are also considerable God-given, popular, economic and international capacities that can help us overcome these challenges,” the top Iranian parliamentarian pointed out.

Addressing the ceremony, Mohseni Ejei expressed the readiness of the Judiciary to help the administration fight against corruption.

According to the Constitution, he added, the president is the highest ranking official in the country after the Leader and shoulders the responsibility to execute the Constitution except for those affairs relating to the Leader.

He wished success for the president in fulfilling such an important responsibility in cooperation with other branches of the government, the elite and the public.

He expressed hope that Raeisi would take swift steps to solve the people’s problems at the earliest, eliminate corruption and discrimination and amend complicated administrative structures.

“Iran’s Judiciary will be more serious than ever in the fight against corruption,” Mohseni Ejei said.

On Tuesday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution officially endorsed Raeisi’s mandate as Iran’s new president through a ceremony in the capital city, weeks after the ex-Judiciary chief won the country’s 13th presidential election by a landslide.

In the decree, the Leader called on the new president to work toward activating the country’s capabilities and paving the way for a leap forward in all sectors, placing an especial emphasis on economy.

Raeisi, the eighth president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, won almost 62 percent of the votes in the June 18 presidential election and will succeed President Hassan Rouhani, who served two four-year terms in office.

According to Seyyed Nezamoddin Mousavi, the spokesman for the Parliament’s presiding board, long lists of foreign officials and political figures have accepted Iran's invitation to attend the event despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

More than 100 officials from 82 countries took part in Raeisi’s inauguration ceremony, including 10 heads of state, 20 parliament speakers, 11 foreign ministers and 10 ministers, as well as special envoys, deputy parliament speakers and chairmen of parliamentary commissions and parliamentary delegations.

A high-level delegation from the European Union (EU), led by the Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service Enrique Mora, has participated in Raeisi’s inauguration. Mora is accompanied by Stephan Klement, head of the EU delegation to the international organizations in Vienna, and Head of Task Force European Union Bruno Scholl.

Afghanistan’s President Ashraf Ghani is also taking part in Raeisi’s swearing-in ceremony.

A high-ranking delegation representing the Palestinian Hamas movement also arrived in the Iranian capital at dawn Thursday to attend the inauguration of president-elect Ibrahim Raeisi. The Hamas delegation is led by head of the movement’s political office, Ismail Haniyeh.

Syrian Parliament Speaker Hammouda Sabbagh is also present at new Iranian president’s inauguration ceremony, representing the Arab country’s President Bashar al-Assad.

The heads of 11 international and regional organizations and the representative of the UN chief; officials from the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), including its President Duarte Pacheco; the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO); the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) and the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation also known as Developing-8 are also present at the event.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)’s Secretary General Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo, President of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani and Serbia’s Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic are among the guests at the inauguration ceremony.

Some 170 domestic and foreign journalists have been invited to provide coverage of the event.

WhatsApp rolls out 'View Once' photos, videos

WhatsApp rolls out 'View Once' photos, videos
Taking photos and recording videos of almost every fun, important, and the random moment has become common in the contemporary world, but not every memory should leave a digital print.

To provide users with a chance to share the moment with others and not leave a digital footprint, WhatsApp has rolled out "View Once" photos and videos that disappear from the chat after they’ve been opened, giving users greater control over their privacy.

For example, you might send a "View Once" photo of some new clothes you’re trying on at a store, a quick reaction to a moment in time, or something sensitive like a Wi-Fi password.

"As with all the personal messages you send on WhatsApp, 'View Once' media is protected by end-to-end encryption so WhatsApp cannot see them," the messaging app's blog said.

They will also be clearly marked with a new “one-time” icon.

After the media has been viewed, the message will appear as “opened” to avoid any confusion about what was happening in the chat at the time.

We’re rolling out the feature to everyone starting this week and are looking forward to feedback on this new way to send private and disappearing media, the messaging app said.

MODERNA’S COVID-19 VACCINE 93% EFFECTIVE SIX MONTHS AFTER SECOND DOSE

MODERNA’S COVID-19 VACCINE
Moderna said on Thursday its COVID-19 shot was about 93% effective through six months after the second dose, showing hardly any change from the 94% efficacy reported in its original clinical trial.

That compares favorably to data from Pfizer and BioNTech last week in which they said their vaccine’s efficacy waned around 6% every two months, declining to around 84% six months after the second shot.

Both the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are based on messenger RNA (mRNA) technology.

“Our COVID-19 vaccine is showing durable efficacy of 93% through six months, but recognize that the Delta variant is a significant new threat so we must remain vigilant,” Moderna Chief Executive Stéphane Bancel said.

However, a booster dose will be necessary prior to the winter season as antibody levels are likely to wane, Moderna said.

The comment comes as public health officials across the world debate on whether additional doses are safe, effective and necessary even as they grapple with the fast-spreading Delta variant of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Pfizer is planning to seek authorization for a third shot later this month, and some countries like Israel have begun or plan to start administering shots to older or vulnerable people.

BOOSTER CANDIDATES

Separately, Moderna said its studies of three different booster candidates induced robust antibody responses against variants, including the Gamma, Beta and Delta variants.

It said neutralizing antibody levels following the boost approached those observed after the second shot.

For this year, Moderna has signed vaccine contracts worth $20 billion in sales and aims to produce between 800 million and 1 billion doses.

It has agreements for $12 billion in 2022, with options for another roughly $8 billion in sales and expects to produce between 2 billion and 3 billion doses next year.

The company, however, has not been able to keep pace with the production of much larger rival Pfizer, which expects to manufacture as many as 3 billion doses this year, and expects 2021 sales to top $33.5 billion.

Moderna’s vaccine was authorized for emergency use in adults in the United States in December and has since been cleared for emergency or conditional use in adults in more than 50 countries.

The company started the process of filing for full approval with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in June and expects to finish its submission in August.

It posted second-quarter sales of $4.4 billion, slightly above expectation of $4.2 billion drawn from 10 analysts polled by Refinitiv. Its COVID-19 shot is the firm’s first authorized product and sales were just $67 million a year earlier.

Moderna earned $2.78 billion, or $6.46 a share, beating quarterly expectations of $5.96 a share.

US rebuffs WHO call for moratorium on COVID-19 booster shots

US rebuffs WHO call for moratorium on COVID-19 booster shots
The United States on Wednesday rejected an appeal from the UN health agency for a moratorium on Covid-19 vaccine booster shots and for rich countries to focus instead on supplying poorer nations.

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had urged the countries and companies controlling the supply of doses to change course immediately and prioritize addressing the drastic inequity in vaccine distribution between rich and poor nations.

"We definitely feel that it's a false choice and we can do both," White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters, adding that the United States has donated more than any other country and was asking others to step up.

"Also in this country (we) have enough supply to ensure that every American has access to a vaccine," she added.

"We will have enough supply to ensure if the FDA decides that boosters are recommended for a portion of the population to provide those as well. We believe we can do both and we don't need to make that choice."

The WHO has for months been sounding the alarm over a glaring and growing imbalance in vaccine availability against a disease that has killed 4.2 million people worldwide.

Some 4.3 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered globally, according to an AFP count.

The WHO wants every country to have vaccinated at least 10 percent of its population by the end of September, at least 40 percent by the end of the year, and 70 percent by the middle of 2022.

In countries categorized as high income by the World Bank, 101 doses per 100 people have been injected. That figure drops to 1.7 doses per 100 people in the 29 lowest-income countries.

Pakistan will not accept 'forceful takeover' in Afghanistan: Moeed Yusuf

National Security Adviser Dr Moeed Yusuf
National Security Adviser Dr Moeed Yusuf has said that Pakistan will not accept a "forceful takeover" in Afghanistan and instead support a political solution to the war-torn country's conflict.

"We will not accept a forceful takeover," he told reporters at a press conference held at the Pakistan embassy in Washington, DC late on Wednesday, wrapping up a week of talks with the US administration.

The NSA stressed that the only solution for peace in Afghanistan was a “political one”.

"We have made it absolutely clear that we are with the international community on where this goes," he said. "But the world also needs to be clear that the US invests in a political settlement.”

Dr Yusuf said the harsh rhetoric of the Afghan government against Pakistan was making it impossible to maintain good relations between the neighbours.

"We are beginning to see a very conscious, deliberate effort by the Afghan government to scapegoat Pakistan," he said, adding that Afghanistan wanted to shift the entire blame of its failures onto Islamabad.

He reiterated that although Pakistan wanted to have very good relations with the Afghan government, "unfortunately, the vitriol and rhetoric coming from there is making that impossible".

He urged the Afghan government and the Taliban to “compromise and reach a peace settlement” as the insurgents make rapid gains amid the US troop withdrawal.

He stressed that the internationally recognised government in Kabul needed to stop looking for a military victory and should include a broader range of Afghans in any future talks.

“There will have to be some compromise given the ground reality. But the violence will have to stop,” he said.

Yusuf said his US counterpart Jake Sullivan and others in President Joe Biden's administration did not make specific requests of Pakistan, but discussed “how quickly we can get all these actors in one room to have a sincere conversation”.

He dismissed talk of Islamabad exerting leverage over the Taliban.

“Whatever limited leverage we had, we used,” he said, pointing to Pakistan encouraging the Taliban to enter talks with the Afghan government in Doha.

“Now with the troop withdrawal, that leverage has logically gone down further,” he added.

Yusuf further said Pakistan was no longer in a position to accept Afghan refugees as it currently hosts about 3.5 million.

"Peace in Afghanistan is non-negotiable for us," he said. "We under no circumstances are prepared to see protracted instability that in the past has caused spillover into Pakistan."

The NSA's remarks came after the US said it wanted Pakistan to keep its borders with Afghanistan open for Afghan refugees, a demand that could strain already tense relations between the two countries.

“So, in a place like Pakistan, it’ll be important that their borders remain open,” said a senior State Department official while briefing journalists on the new US refugee admission programme for Afghan nationals.

NSA Yusuf had said at a briefing in Washington this week that arrangements should be made to keep displaced Afghans inside their country instead of pushing them into Pakistan.

“Why make them dar-ba-dar (homeless)? Make arrangements for them inside their country. Pakistan does not have the capacity to take more refugees,” he said.

Pak vs NZ series crucial for practice ahead of T20 World Cup: Wasim Khan

Pakistan Cricket Board Chief Executive Wasim Khan
Pakistan Cricket Board Chief Executive Wasim Khan on Thursday said the upcoming series against New Zealand was crucial for the Men In Green before they head into the T20I World Cup.

In a video message, the PCB chief executive appreciated the Kiwis for accepting Pakistan's offer to play three ODIs and five T20Is — meaning an additional two matches of the short format.

New Zealand are set to tour Pakistan after an 18-year hiatus, which is exciting news for the country, he said.

"I am delighted they accepted our offer to play two additional T20Is leading into the World Cup; it's about giving our team enough practice before they head into the World Cup," he said.

The PCB chief executive said it's a busy time for the team and management as South Africa visited Pakistan in February, and then in the 2021-22 season, New Zealand and England have accepted to come, West Indies are ready to tour, Pakistan Super League will take place, and later Australia will also visit the country.

"This is the busiest time in the history of Pakistan cricket," he said.

"It's one thing to improve your domestic cricket and another to give an opportunity to youngsters to watch their heroes live, through which they will aspire to become cricketers," he said.

"They will want to be the next Shaheen Shah Afridi and the next Babar Azam," said Khan, who is looking to get as many people in the stadium as possible for the upcoming tours.

New Zealand's engagements in Pakistan

The PCB has released the schedule of New Zealand's upcoming tour to Pakistan, with the first ODI match slated to take place on September 17 at Rawalpindi.

In an extended series, New Zealand will play three ODIs and five T20Is on their first visit to Pakistan since November 2003.

The three ODIs will be part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League ODIs, confirmed both boards.

Rawalpindi’s Pindi Cricket Stadium will be the venue of the 17, 19 and 21 September ODIs, while the iconic Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will stage the five T20Is from September 25 to October 3, as per the PCB's press release.

Pakistan and New Zealand will both have high stakes in the T20I series as both teams will be looking to grab the third spot in the ICC T20I Team Rankings.

New Zealand, the ICC World Test Championship winners, will return to Pakistan next year to play Test matches.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) chief David White expressed his excitement at the Kiwis touring Pakistan for the first time in more than a decade-and-a-half.

"We’re very much looking forward to returning to Pakistan for the start of their home international season.

"New Zealand was the first country outside India to tour Pakistan and we share a close relationship with the PCB," he said.

"It’s great that, after such a difficult time for Pakistan, international cricket is again being played in the country," the NZ chief added.

CJP takes notice of attack on Hindu temple in Rahim Yar Khan

Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed
Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed on Thursday took notice of the attack on a Hindu temple by a charged mob in Bhong village of Punjab's Rahim Yar Khan district, a statement said.

The top judge took cognisance of the incident after MNA Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, who is the patron-in-chief of the Pakistan Hindu Council, called on Chief Justice Ahmed at the Supreme Court in Islamabad today to discuss the issue of the temple attack.

The chief justice "showed grave concern over the tragic incident", according to a press released issued by the Supreme Court.

He fixed the matter before the court on August 6 (tomorrow) at Islamabad, and directed the Punjab chief secretary and inspector general of police to appear for the hearing along with a report. Dr Vankwani has also been summoned, the statement added.

The incident took place on Wednesday, when hundreds of people vandalised the Hindu temple in Bhong and blocked the Sukkur-Multan Motorway (M-5) after a nine-year-old Hindu boy, who allegedly urinated in a local seminary, was granted bail by a local court.

Responding to the situation late in the evening, the district administration deployed Rangers in the area after Deputy Commissioner Dr Khuram Shehzad and District Police Officer Asad Sarfraz visited the town.

On the complaint of a cleric, Hafiz Muhammad Ibrahim, of Darul Uloom Arabia Taleemul Quran, the Bhong police had registered a case against the boy (who was not named) under Section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Pakistan Penal Code on July 25.

Sources said some Hindu elders tendered an apology to the seminary administration, saying the suspect was a minor and mentally challenged. But when a lower court granted him bail a few days ago, some people incited the public in the town on Wednesday and got all shops there closed in protest.

A video clip that went viral on social media showed charged people wielding clubs and rods storming the temple and smashing its glass doors, windows and lights, and damaging the ceiling fans and idols.

Later, the protesters also blocked the M-5 motorway for more than three hours.

District police spokesman Ahmed Nawaz Cheema said Rangers had been deployed in the troubled area and the situation was under control.

About the alleged late response by the police authorities, sources said senior officials were busy attending the police martyrs’ day ceremonies.

Cheema confirmed that the suspect was a minor, saying he had no information about his mental health so far.

There were reports of some old monetary dispute between Hindu and Muslim groups in the area which was stated to be the actual cause of the unrest.

A PTI member representing minorities said after getting the Bhong market closed, the mob also tried to attack some houses of people belonging to the Hindu community.

The Ministry of Plannning, Development and Special Initiatives mulled over a plan to build a large-scale LNG terminal with a network of pipelines at the Gwadar port along with a truckload facility.

The meeting of the Pak-China Relations Steering Committee, chaired by federal minister Asad Umar, also discussed the possibility of investment by the private sector under such an initiative.

Participants of the meeting were told 40% of the gas transported throughout China was through pipelines. The meeting discussed the issues being faced by investors in CPEC projects in detail, as per the report.

While discussing the CPEC energy projects facing delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the committee directed the Power Division to formulate a policy to deal with COD extension issues of power projects.

Google unveils smart phone powered by its own chip

Google unveils smart phone powered by its own chip
Google unveiled on Monday a flagship Pixel smart phone powered by its first mobile chip to put artificial intelligence in buyers’ hands.

Pixel 6 models set for release later this year, with superfast 5G wireless capability, will debut Google’s own Tensor chip crafted along the lines of processors it made for data centres to enable computers to think more like people do.

“It’s basically a mobile system on a chip designed around artificial intelligence,” Google devices senior vice president Rick Osterloh said during a briefing at the company’s headquarters in Silicon Valley.

“We’re really excited about it. We’re setting the stage to really grow the business.”

Pixel phones have been seen as a way for Google to showcase the capabilities of its free Android mobile operating system, setting a standard for other smart phone makers.

“We’ve always thought about our hardware products in the context of driving computing forward,” said Google chief executive Sundar Pichai.

“Our custom Google Tensor chip, which has been four years in the making and builds off two decades of Google’s computing experience, does exactly that.”

The Pixel 6 hardware and software mix ramps up the smartphone’s ability to understand what people say in another step toward a future of “ambient computing”, according to Osterloh.

The phrase refers to being able to access the internet or computing power conversationally at any time as portrayed in a 2013 science fiction romance film, Her. “It’s basically this notion that you should be able to naturally interact with computers all around you,” Osterloh said.

“We see the mobile phone being the centre of that for the foreseeable future.”

The smarter chip was also put to work improving photo and video capabilities in a nod to hot trends in sharing images and short-form snippets online, a demonstration showed.

An array of sensors for photography are in a band on the back of the smartphone, with the Pixel 6 having a 6.4 inch, edge-to-edge screen and the Pro model being slightly larger.

Google’s shift to Tensor comes as the world faces a global chip shortage that has hobbled production of products ranging from cars to computers.

“In some ways, it’s fortunate in that we kind of control our own destiny,” Osterloh said of the chip crunch.

“We think we can manage through it and see it getting better toward the end of the year.”
