Another Modi s' Drama, BJP under fire for using photos of pilot Abhinandan in election posters

India’s Bharatiya Janata Party is under fire for using photos of Indian pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman in election posters
India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is under fire for using photos of Indian pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman in its election posters.

According to Indian media reports, a banner carrying photographs of BJP chief Amit Shah, other party candidates with Abhinandan surfaced in Delhi’s Mehrauli area on Saturday, with the catchphrases, ‘Modi Hai Toh Mumkin Hai' and ‘NaMo Again’, leading the Indian Election Commission to issue an advisory.

After pictures of the poster went viral, the Indian Defence Ministry brought the matter to the notice of the election commission, which asked the political parties not to use photographs of defence personnel in posters used for poll campaigning.

On March 1, the Pakistani government had released the Indian pilot who was captured when his MiG-21 was among two Indian military aircraft shot down by Pakistan Air Force after they ventured into the Pakistani airspace, as a "gesture of peace" towards New Delhi.

Social media users criticised the party and called it "shameful" and a "cheap poll trick".

Journalist Rama Lakshmi questioned the political party and asked, "Is the BJP allowed to use Abhinandan in its posters? It is 'a slippery slope'."

Another user found it to be “shameful”

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq summoned for questioning in false cases

Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq
Victimisation of Hurriyat leaders continues in the Indian Occupied Kashmir (Iok) as India’s National Investigation Agency has summoned Chairman of Hurriyat forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, to New Delhi for questioning on Monday in connection with a false case registered against him.

According to Kashmir Media Service, NIA has also summoned APHC Chairman Syed Ali Gilani’s son, Dr Naseem Gilani on same day.

The agency had recently conducted raids on the residences of many Hurriyat leaders including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik on 26th of last month of February.

The NIA had already arrested several Hurriyat leaders and activists.

The detentions and raids were aimed at intimidating the Kashmiris to give up their just struggle for securing inalienable right to self-determination.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front in a statement in Srinagar said its illegally detained Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik had been put in solitary confinement at Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu.

It maintained that Muhammad Yasin Malik is suffering from various ailments and warned that the occupation authorities would be responsible if anything untoward happened to him.

Indian troops launched cordon and search operations in Heff Shirmal and Molu Chitragam areas of Shopian district, today.

The troops had launched a similar operation after unknown persons snatched a weapon from the Personal Security Officer of Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar last night.

Nine police killed in attack in Myanmar’s Rakhine: police

Nine police killed in attack in Myanmar’s Rakhine
Nine policemen have been killed in a militant attack in Myanmar’s western Rakhine state, police said on Sunday, as tensions ratchet up in a state riven by ethnic and religious conflict.

A bloody military crackdown in 2017 forced some 740,000 Rohingya Muslims over the border into Bangladesh in violence UN investigators have said warrants the prosecution of top generals for genocide and crimes against humanity.

But the armed forces are now waging a war against a militant group claiming to represent the state’s ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, a population that also stands accused of aiding soldiers in their expulsion of the Rohingya.

The Arakan Army (AA) has in recent months mounted several attacks on security forces and officials in its struggle for more autonomy and rights for Rakhine people.

The attack late Saturday took place in Yoetayoke village, just an hour north of Rakhine state’s capital Sittwe.

Images seen by AFP showed bodies lying on the ground, covered in blankets with a pool of blood soaking into the dust in the grounds of the ramshackle police station.

“Nine police were killed, one was injured and another one is missing,” a senior police officer told AFP, not wanting to be named.

A leaked police report said weapons were also taken from the police post.

No group has yet claimed responsibility and the AA could not immediately be reached for comment.

A local administrator confirmed investigations are under way.

- Engulfed in conflict -

Northern Rakhine state is inaccessible outside of carefully government-chaperoned trips and information is difficult to verify independently.

But swathes of the state’s north are once again engulfed in conflict.

The military has brought in thousands of reinforcements and is bombarding AA positions with heavy artillery.

Several thousand people have been forced from their homes by the violence.

Yet there is widespread support for the AA’s cause across much of Rakhine, one of the poorest states in the country, where many feel they have suffered decades of discrimination by the state.

Some 100 local administrators submitted their resignation en masse this month calling for the release of four colleagues reportedly arrested for having links with the AA.

The verdict in a treason trial against a popular Rakhine politician is also expected in the coming days and could prove to be a further flashpoint.

Aye Maung stands accused of treason after allegedly inciting Rakhine people in a speech last year to take arms and rise up against the country’s ethnic-Bamar (Burmese) majority.

The AA has expanded its ranks since its formation in 2009 and is now believed to have several thousand recruits.

The group ramped up operations at the end of last year, but it was a deadly attack on four police posts on Independence Day early January that focused the country’s attention and triggered the military’s swift retaliation.

Thirteen police officers were killed in the brazen attack and in an unprecedented move the civilian government instructed the military to crack down on the insurgents.

This came just a couple of weeks after the military declared a unilateral ceasefire against ethnic armed groups on the other side of Myanmar, allowing the army to concentrate its efforts in Rakhine.

Myanmar's restive borderlands have been plagued by conflict since independence from British colonial rule 70 years ago.

Violence in strife-torn Rakhine was glossed over by Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi at a recent investment forum where she touted the state’s "untapped" economic potential and blamed the international community for focusing "narrowly" on its problems.

Djokovic dispatches Fratangelo to book Kohlschreiber clash

Novak Djokovic
World number one Novak Djokovic shook off a nervy start to dispatch US qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo in straight sets Saturday to reach the third round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters.

Djokovic, playing his first match since winning a record seventh Australian Open title in January, was less than sharp in conceding an early break to his 128th-ranked rival.

He broke back as Fratangelo served for the set to knot it at 5-5, and then raced to a 4-1 lead in the tiebreaker.

Djokovic had to dig deep, however, when Fratangelo battled back to lead the tiebreaker 5-4.

After a double fault and a forehand error from the 25-year-old American, Djokovic suddenly had a set point, and once he'd pocketed the set, the second went all his way.

"To be honest, I was a bit nervous in the beginning," admitted Djokovic, who is going for a record sixth Indian Wells title.

Djokovic, currently tied with Roger Federer on five wins in the California desert, can also tie world number two Rafael Nadal's record of 33 Masters 1000 titles.

"I didn't play my best. Credit to Bjorn for coming out firing from every corner.

"I was lucky to get the first set. After that, things went better for me," said Djokovic, who loped over to share a word with US great Pete Sampras in the stands after wrapping up the victory in one hour and 29 minutes.

Djokovic next faces German Philipp Kohlschreiber, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Australian Nick Kyrgios.

Kyrgios, seeded 31st, was coming off a scintillating run to the Mexico Open title in Acapulco, where he defeated Nadal, ninth-ranked John Isner and, in the final, third-ranked German Alexander Zverev.

Kyrgios said it wasn't a matter of an emotional let-down in the wake of his first title in over a year.

"I didn't really have a problem getting up. I just didn't play well today," he said.

"He's an incredible competitor," Kyrgios said. "He knows how to win tennis matches."

As men's seeds swung into action after first-round byes, third-seeded Zverev advanced when Slovakian foe Martin Klizan retired with an ankle injury with the German leading 6-3, 2-0.

Action opened on stadium court with 18-year-old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime powering past Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-4, 6-2, for his first win over a top-10 player.

In a battle of two ATP young guns, 58th-ranked Auger-Aliassime came out firing, and his aggression paid off with a victory over 20-year-old Tsitsipas, who shot to prominence with a victory over Federer at the Australian Open.

He moved into the top 10 for the first time with his runner-up finish to Federer in Dubai, where the Swiss great claimed a remarkable 100th career title.

But Tsitsipas could find no answer to Auger-Aliassime, who broke early in the first to gain the upper hand and seized a 2-1 lead with the first of two breaks in the second.

Auger-Aliassime saved all seven break points he faced -- six of them in the first set.

"It's unbelievable," Auger-Aliassime said. "I never expected to play that well today, to get my first top-10 win is special, against Stefanos who has been playing so well."

Auger-Aliassime, who next faces Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka, is one of four teens in the draw, along with countryman Denis Shapovalov, Alexei Popyrin and lucky loser Miomir Kecmanovic.

Kecmanovic gained entry into the second round in place of injured fifth-seed Kevin Anderson.

He made the most of his chance, beating Germany's Maximilian Marterer, 6-3, 6-2, to reach the third round.

At the other end of the age spectrum, 40-year-old Ivo Karlovic advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) victory over 11th-seeded Croatian Borna Coric.

Elon Musk's SpaceX capsule splashes down off Florida coast

Elon Musk's SpaceX capsule splashes down off Florida coast
An unmanned capsule from Elon Musk’s SpaceX splashed into the Atlantic Ocean on Friday, successfully completing a mission crucial to NASA’s long-delayed quest to resume human space flight from U.S. soil later this year.

After a six-day mission to the International Space Station, Crew Dragon detached at about 2:30 a.m EST (0730 GMT) and sped back to earth, reaching hypersonic speeds before an 8:45 a.m. EST (1345 GMT) splash-down about 200 miles (320 km) off the Florida coast.

A SpaceX rocket launched the 16-foot-tall (4.9-meter) capsule from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida last Saturday.

“Everything happened just perfectly, right on time the way that we expected it to,” Benjamin Reed, SpaceX’s director of crew mission management, said in a live stream from California.

It was a crucial milestone in the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Commercial Crew Program ahead of SpaceX’s first crewed test flight slated to launch in July with U.S. astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken.

“This really is an American achievement that spans many generations of NASA administrators and over a decade of work,” said current Administrator Jim Bridenstine.

Steve Stich, the crew program’s deputy manager with NASA, said the vehicle was doing well after the splash-down.

The capsule, which was lifted out of the water by a boat using a crane, is due back on land by Sunday. The live stream showed its protective shell had been weathered from intense heat during re-entry.

The mission carried 400 pounds (180 kg) of test equipment to the space station, including a dummy named Ripley outfitted with sensors around its head, neck, and spine to monitor how a flight would feel for a human.

The space station’s three-member crew greeted the capsule last Sunday, with U.S. astronaut Anne McClain and Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques entering Crew Dragon’s cabin to carry out air quality tests and inspections.

NASA has awarded SpaceX and Boeing Co a total of $6.8 billion to build competing rocket and capsule systems to launch astronauts into orbit from American soil, something not possible since the U.S. Space Shuttle was retired from service in 2011.

Results from this mission will determine whether SpaceX can stick to its current 2019 test schedule following previous development delays for the Hawthorne, California-based company and Boeing.

“I don’t think we saw really anything in the mission so far - we’ve got to do the data reviews - that would preclude us from having a crewed mission later this year,” Stich said.

The launch systems are aimed at ending U.S. reliance on Russian Soyuz rockets for $80 million-per-seat rides to the $100 billion orbital research laboratory, which flies about 250 miles (400 km) above earth.

NASA resumed talks with Russia’s space agency Roscosmos in February seeking two additional Soyuz seats for 2020 to maintain a U.S. presence on the space station.

The short-notice solicitation, posted on Feb. 13, “provides flexibility and back-up capability” as the companies build their rocket-and-capsule launch systems.

Boeing’s Starliner crew capsule is poised to launch its maiden unmanned mission in April ahead of an August test flight carrying U.S. astronauts Michael Fincke, Chris Ferguson and Nicole Mann.

Bridenstine told Reuters the cost per seat on the Boeing or SpaceX systems would be lower than for the shuttle or Soyuz.

Privately owned SpaceX, also known as Space Exploration Technologies Corp, was founded in 2002 by Musk, who is also a co-founder of electric car maker Tesla Inc.

Soccer: U.S. women's head coach Ellis supports players' lawsuit

Soccer: U.S. women's head coach Ellis supports players' lawsuit
U.S. women’s national soccer team coach Jill Ellis threw her support behind her players on Saturday after all 28 members of the reigning World Cup champions’ squad filed a suit against U.S. Soccer for gender discrimination.

The lawsuit alleges that the women players were paid less than their male counterparts despite performing better, and were provided with inferior playing and training conditions.

“I’m definitely in support,” Ellis told reporters, adding that the players called her before announcing the lawsuit but did not discuss it with her ahead of filing it.

Ellis, who as head coach is employed by the U.S. soccer federation, is in a unique position as both a representative of the players and the athletic body targeted in the lawsuit.

“(I) recognize moments where we have to continue to push the envelope,” Ellis said. “It’s not hard to navigate because I’m in that world and my players know I support them.”

The lawsuit rekindled the debate around gender pay equality and garnered the support of sports’ biggest stars, including 23-times tennis grand slam champion Serena Williams.

“The pay gap has been there for a very long time. And this is across all industries. And soccer was no different,” said two-times gold medalist Aly Wagner, who was part of the 2008 Olympic team with plaintiffs Tobin Heath and Carli Lloyd.

“I know what we went through when I was playing,” Wagner said. “Things weren’t always equitable.”

The U.S. women’s national soccer team, a stalwart of American athletics with three World Cup titles and four Olympic gold medals to their name, will enter this year’s women’s World Cup in June among the favorites to win the tournament.

Leslie Osborne, who played for the U.S. women’s team in the 2007 World Cup, said the suit was overdue.

“(The players) know that they have leverage going into this next women’s World Cup,” Osborne said.

“I think the fact that they are doing this – and every single player is doing it together – is so strong and their voice is going to be heard regardless,” she added.

“And people from all over the world are watching this team go through this.”

Working with US day and night to get trade deal: China

China and US are still working day and night to achieve a trade deal
China and the United States are still working day and night to achieve a trade deal that matches the interests of both sides and the hopes of the world, including eliminating tit-for-tat tariffs, a senior Chinese official said on Saturday.

Chinese Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen said he was optimistic about negotiations with Washington, but added any trade mechanism achieved must be equal and fair.

The governments of the world’s two largest economies have been locked in a tariff battle for months as Washington presses Beijing to address long-standing concerns over Chinese practices and policies around technology transfers, market access and intellectual property rights.

Advances in talks drove the White House to indefinitely delay hikes in tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports that were set to kick in on March 2.

Wang, speaking at a news conference on the sidelines of China’s ongoing annual meeting of parliament, said slapping tariffs on each other was bad for workers, farmers, exporters and manufacturers.

“It hurts investor confidence and delays corporate investment decisions,” said Wang, who has been deeply involved in the trade talks with the United States.

“Now, the economic and trade teams of the two sides are making full efforts to communicate and negotiate in order to reach an agreement in line with the principles and directions decided by the two heads of states,” he added.

“That is to remove all the tariffs imposed on each other, so that bilateral trade relations between China and the United States can return to normal.”

The two countries’ working teams are communicating “day and night”, Wang said. The trade talks have seen senior officials shuttling backwards and forwards between Beijing and Washington.

Giving rare details into the talks, Wang said the two countries had been making extra effort to find areas in common. During the talks Vice Premier Liu He and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer enjoyed take out food, he said.

“Vice Premier Liu had a hamburger, and Lighthizer had eggplant and chicken,” he added, describing a common Chinese dish.

“Throughout the negotiations, there was coffee and tea, but the two of them did not drink any coffee, did not drink any tea. They both drank boiled water. This is to find common ground.”

It is unclear when or where senior negotiators from both sides will next meet.

Level playing field

The US administration has also demanded that China curb generous subsidies and open its domestic market to US firms.

China does not systematically give subsidies to its state-owned firms, said the head of its state assets regulator on Saturday, when asked about international concerns China adopts implicit preferential policies for state-owned enterprises.

“It can be said that China does not have any laws and regulations specifically addressing the issue of subsidies for state-owned enterprises,” said Xiao Yaqing, head of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (Sasac).

“Therefore, China is currently cleaning up and standardizing various subsidies,” Xiao told reporters on the sidelines of the annual meeting of parliament.

China is working on standardizing subsidies to create a level playing field for companies of all types and sizes, he added. It was unclear whether standardizing subsidies refers to adjustments of subsidies or their removal entirely.

Much work left to do

US administration officials have not made any new plans to send a team to China for face-to-face trade talks though there is much work left to be done to reach a deal, White House trade adviser Clete Willems said on Friday.

US President Donald Trump said last month he may sign a deal to end the trade war with Chinese President Xi Jinping if their countries can bridge remaining differences, and do so at his property in Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

Xi goes to France and Italy in the middle of this month, prompting speculation he may tack on a trip to the United States either before or after his European visit.

However, one Beijing-based source familiar with the trade talks said there had been no formal discussions between the two countries on Xi going to Florida, and downplayed the chances of it happening this month.

A second source, also familiar with the situation, said China thought it was getting close to a deal but now realized that won’t be so easy to achieve.

“Things are not yet agreed,” the source said.

Both sources spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Tu Xinquan, a trade expert at Beijing’s University of International Business and Economics who has advised the government, was skeptical Xi would want to sign a deal at Mar-a-Lago.

“It is not good for Xi to go to America to sign such an agreement. Maybe a third country would be better,” Tu said.

Wang did not answer questions from reporters on whether Xi would go to Mar-a-Lago.

Mexico night club attack leaves 15 dead

At least 15 men have died following a shooting at a nightclub in central Mexico
At least 15 men have died following a shooting at a nightclub in central Mexico, prosecutors said Saturday.

Another four people, three men and a woman, suffered injuries, public prosecutor´s office spokesman Juan Jose Martinez told AFP by telephone.

The nightclub lies in Guanajuato state, where authorities have launched an operation against criminal gangs involved in fuel theft.

The attack took place in the early hours Saturday as several heavily armed men opened fire at the La Playa nightclub in Salamanca before making off in a vehicle, the spokesman said.

The four injured people were taken to a nearby hospital. So far, none of the victims have been identified.

Salamanca is the site of the main pipeline of state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), where fuel thieves have cost the firm around $3 billion over the last few years.

In late January, a fake bomb was found in a car parked close to the refinery.

Nearby, signs were found threatening Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and demanding that he withdraw from the area soldiers fighting against fuel theft gangs.

Salamanca is less than 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Santa Rosa de Lima, where a few days ago authorities conducted an operation against Juan Antonio Yepez, the alleged leader of a fuel-stealing cartel.

R. Kelly freed from Chicago jail after child support paid

R. Kelly freed from Chicago jail after child support paid
Singer R. Kelly was released from a Chicago jail on Saturday after a child support payment of more than $161,000 was made to an ex-wife, police said, ending his second incarceration in two weeks after a prior arrest on sex assault charges.

The performer, 52, was arrested on Wednesday over the unpaid support for three children he has with Andrea Lee. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office had said he would have to pay the full amount to be freed.

“I promise you, we’re gonna straighten all this stuff out,” Kelly told reporters and a smattering of fans who had gathered outside Cook County Jail. “That’s all I can say right now.”

Sam Randall, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said in a phone interview on Saturday that the source of the payment was unclear, noting that the name section of the bond slip was left blank.

“Anonymity in this situation is pretty rare,” Randall said. “Typically that section of the form is filled out.”

Celebrity website TMZ cited sources close to Kelly as saying an unidentified benefactor helped him.

Kelly’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, declined to comment when asked by email whether the child support payment was made by Kelly or someone else.

Last month, Kelly was arrested and pleaded not guilty to charges he had sexually assaulted three teenage girls and a fourth woman. He has denied similar abuse allegations for decades. In 2008, the singer was tried on child pornography charges and found not guilty.

Kelly bailed out of jail on the sexual assault charges on Feb. 25 and had since complained of financial difficulties, saying in an interview with CBS that “so many people” had access to his bank account and had stolen from him.

In the interview, he also tearfully and angrily rejected allegations that he had sex with underage girls.

Americans drinking more gourmet coffee than ever before: survey

Americans are consuming more gourmet coffee than ever, but the outlook for future growth may be threatened by increasing economic worries.
Americans are consuming more gourmet coffee than ever, but the outlook for future growth may be threatened by increasing economic worries, survey results from the National Coffee Association (NCA) showed on Saturday.

Sixty-one percent of the coffee drank in the United States is described by consumers as gourmet, according to the results of a survey commissioned by the NCA and released during the group’s annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia.

That is a record-high proportion for a segment that has been steadily growing for the past several years, as consumer preferences have tilted toward finer beans.

Overall daily consumption, however, remains at a similar level to last year, with 63 percent of respondents saying they had consumed coffee within the past day, results of the Jan. 7-22 survey of about 3,000 people in the United States showed.

“While we’re not seeing a significant change in the quantity of coffee that people are consuming, there is a clear change in the quality and consideration of each cup,” the NCA said.

Americans continue to mostly enjoy their coffee in the home, with at-home consumption accounting for 78 percent of the total. This is little changed from the previous year, but is down from 84 percent in 2012.

More respondents said they felt they were in a worse situation financially than they were six months ago (15 percent compared to 11 percent last year) which could take a toll on pricier out-of-home and gourmet consumption.

Rising negative perceptions of individual financial situations helps, to some extent, explain why consumption growth did not grow significantly in 2019, the survey noted.

The NCA this year added a new question on respondents’ familiarity with cannabidiol (CBD), an ingredient in cannabis whose use as an additive to beverages, including coffee, has grown.

“There’s an awareness out there (about CBD) that’s growing,” said Bill Murray, chief executive of the NCA, on the fringes of the meeting. “Whether it takes off, and the questions about legality - we’ll see,” he said.

More Americans are drinking coffee in the afternoon, the survey results showed. Increasing the frequency of consumption remains a major area for potential growth, Murray said.

The survey also noted some demographic nuances. African-American consumption of gourmet coffee beverages grew notably, jumping to 40 percent from 33 percent last year. Their consumption of non-espresso blended drinks, like cold brew and frozen blended beverages, was especially strong and could help drive future growth of the segment, the survey said.

Some 29 Turkish Airlines passengers hurt by turbulence headed to New York

Some 29 Turkish Airlines passengers hurt by turbulence headed to New York
More than two dozen people were injured and at least 10 were taken to a hospital after a Turkish Airlines flight encountered severe turbulence on its approach to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on Saturday, officials said.

The New York Fire Department said it was treating 29 passengers for “non-life-threatening injuries” at the airport, after having initially reported the number on Twitter at 32.

Most of the injuries aboard Turkish Airlines Flight 001 from Istanbul were minor, according to Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates JFK Airport.

“The majority of them were bumps, bruises and cuts,” he said. “I’m not aware of any life-threatening injuries at this point.”

The 10 passengers sent to a local hospital included a child and one with a possible broken leg, he said.

The airliner, carrying 326 passengers with a crew of 21, ran into “severe turbulence” about 45 minutes before landing at 5:35 p.m. EST, Coleman said.

The National Weather Service’s Aviation Weather Center had issued an advisory for severe turbulence over New England on Saturday evening.

Turkish Airlines did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It was the second incident at a major New York-area airport on Saturday. New Jersey’s Newark airport closed its runways earlier in the day after a cargo plane flying to Florida from Canada was forced to make an emergency landing.

Venezuela's Guaido calls for massive protest as blackout drags on

Venezuela's Guaido
Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido on Saturday called on citizens nationwide to travel to the capital Caracas for a protest against socialist President Nicolas Maduro, as the country’s worst blackout in decades dragged on for a third day.

Addressing supporters in southwestern Caracas, Guaido - the leader of the opposition-run congress who invoked the constitution to assume an interim presidency in January - said Maduro’s government “has no way to solve the electricity crisis that they themselves created.”

“All of Venezuela, to Caracas!” Guaido yelled while standing atop a bridge, without saying when the planned protest would be held. “The days ahead will be difficult, thanks to the regime.”

Activists had scuffled with police and troops ahead of the rally, meant to pressure Maduro amid the blackout, which the governing Socialist Party called an act of U.S.-sponsored sabotage but opposition critics derided as the result of two decades of mismanagement and corruption.

Dozens of demonstrators attempted to walk along an avenue in Caracas but were moved onto the sidewalk by police in riot gear, leading them to shout at the officers and push on their riot shields. One woman was sprayed with pepper spray, according to a local broadcaster.

The power flickered on and off in parts of Caracas on Saturday morning, including the presidential palace of Miraflores, according to Reuters witnesses. Six of the country’s 23 states still lacked power as of Saturday afternoon, Socialist Party Vice President Diosdado Cabello said on state television.

“We’re all upset that we’ve got no power, no phone service, no water and they want to block us,” said Rossmary Nascimiento, 45, a nutritionist at the Caracas rally. “I want a normal country.”

At a competing march organized by the Socialist Party to protest what it calls U.S. imperialism, Maduro blamed the outages on “electromagnetic and cyber attacks directed from abroad by the empire.”

“The right wing, together with the empire, has stabbed the electricity system, and we are trying to cure it soon,” he said.

Several hundred people gathered at the rally in central Caracas for a march to denounce the crippling U.S. oil sanctions aimed at cutting off the Maduro government’s funding sources.

“We’re here, we’re mobilized, because we’re not going to let the gringos take over,” said Elbadina Gomez, 76, who works for an activist group linked to the Socialist Party.

Julio Castro, a doctor and member of a non-governmental organization called Doctors For Health, tweeted that a total of 17 people had died during the blackout, including nine deaths in emergency rooms.

Reuters was unable to independently confirm the deaths or whether they could have resulted from the blackout. The Information Ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

Clinics in the sweltering western state of Zulia, which suffers chronic regional blackouts, had scaled back operations after nearly 72 hours without power.

“We’re not offering services and we don’t have any patients staying here because the generator is not working,” said Chiquinquira Caldera, head of administration at the San Lucas clinic in the city of Maracaibo, as she played a game of Chinese checkers with doctors who were waiting for power to return.

Venezuela, already suffering from hyperinflation and shortages of basic goods, has been mired in a major political crisis since Guaido assumed the interim presidency in January, calling Maduro a usurper following the 2018 election, which Maduro won but was widely considered fraudulent.

Maduro says Guaido is a puppet of Washington and dismisses his claim to the presidency as an effort by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to control Venezuela’s oil wealth.

Former mayor and exiled opposition activist Antonio Ledezma on Saturday called on Guaido to seek United Nations intervention in Venezuela by invoking a principle known as “responsibility to protect.”

The U.N. doctrine sometimes referred to as R2P was created to prevent mass killings such as those of Rwanda and Bosnia and places the onus on the international community to protect populations from crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.

“President @jguaido, (you should) formally request Humanitarian Intervention, applying the concept of R2P, to stop extermination, genocide and destruction of what’s left of our country,” Ledezma wrote via Twitter.

At the opposition rally, Guaido said he would not invoke an article of the Venezuelan constitution allowing the congress to authorize foreign military operations within Venezuela “until we have to.”

“Article 187 when the time comes,” Guaido said. “We need to be in the streets, mobilized. It depends on us, not on anybody else.”

Trump has said that a “military option” is on the table with regard to Venezuela, but Latin American neighbors have emphatically opposed a U.S. intervention as a way of addressing the situation.

Biden tops 2020 Iowa presidential poll, Sanders gains momentum

Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden
Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden topped a poll of Iowa voters on Saturday that also showed Senator Bernie Sanders gaining momentum against him in the No. 2 spot.

Biden, who has not announced whether he is running in the 2020 election, is the first choice for president of likely Iowa Democratic caucus-goers with 27 percent in the Des Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom Iowa Poll. Sanders, 77, got 25 percent.

“If I’m Joe Biden sitting on the fence and I see this poll, this might make me want to jump in,” J. Ann Selzer, president of Selzer & Co, which conducted the poll, told the Des Moines Register.

The newspaper’s Iowa poll has a long track record of relative accuracy in the state that kicks off the presidential nominating process. In this cycle, Iowa will hold the first contest in the Democratic race in February 2020.

Nearly 65 percent of the voters said Biden, 76, who was also a U.S. senator first elected in 1972, has more experience than any other candidate and should enter the race, while 31 percent said his time as a candidate has passed.

Sanders, a progressive populist who held a rally in Iowa as the poll was being conducted last week, gained 6 percentage points from 19 percent in the group’s previous poll released in December. Biden fell 5 percentage points from 32 percent in the last poll.

At least a dozen major candidates already have jumped into the Democratic contest to pick a nominee to challenge Republican President Donald Trump, and Democrats are still waiting for decisions in coming weeks from other big names such as Biden and former Congressman Beto O’Rourke of Texas.

In most national polls of Democrats, Biden has a solid lead while Sanders, who lost the 2016 Democratic nomination to Hillary Clinton, typically is in second. In those polls, Senator Kamala Harris of California has vaulted into third ahead of other senators including Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

In the Iowa poll, Warren was third with 9 percent of voters, and Harris was fourth with 7 percent. O’Rourke got 5 percent of voters, down 6 percentage points from December.

It was the Register’s first Iowa poll since candidates began jumping into the race at the beginning of the year. The poll also surveyed support of likely Iowa caucus-goers on issues that have dominated the early discussion and drawn support from most of the Democratic presidential contenders.

The Green New Deal, a proposal by Democrats in Congress to tackle climate change, was supported in full by 65 percent of the Democratic voters, partially by 26 percent, with 4 percent not supporting. The deal would fund government programs on clean energy and make buildings energy efficient while helping to address poverty.

Support was also measured for Medicare-for-all, a plan first proposed by Sanders in 2017, to replace the current mix of private and government financed healthcare coverage with a universal coverage plan funded solely by the government. It was supported by 49 percent of the likely caucus-goers, partially by 35 percent, with 11 percent not supporting.

Indian govt, media spread disinformation to mislead the international community: FO

Foreign Office of Pakistan
Indian government and media continue to spread disinformation to mislead the international community and the Indian people for domestic political gains while trying to cover up its failures and resultant embarrassment, said the Foreign Office in a statement.

It said Pakistan has categorically rejected false Indian allegations about the Pulwama attack, adding that Pakistan responded with maturity, responsibility and resolve in all domains including political, information and response to Indian act of military aggression.

The Foreign Office said Indian dossier on Pulwama attack is being examined and update on it will be shared in due course.

About Indian allegations on terrorism, it said the whole world recognises Pakistan’s successful fight against terrorism.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had said India had got an ‘appropriate’ response and Pakistan would not spoil the atmosphere.

Talking to media here, Qureshi demanded the international community and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take notice of New Delhi’s belligerent behaviour.

He described that ‘Naya Pakistan’ was aimed to instilling new positive mindset in the people and introducing a new model of governance.

The foreign minister claimed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had paved its way into Punjab, and it had become popular among the masses there.

Difa-e-Pakistan: PTI March kicks off from Karachi

PTI parliamentary leader in Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Sindh chapter launched a three-day Difa-e-Pakistan March from Karachi on Sunday morning to express solidarity with Pakistan army for defending the motherland and responding to Indian aggression befittingly.

The march began from Cantt Station under the stewardship of PTI parliamentary leader in Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh and other party lawmakers from Sindh.

Speaking to the media before boarding Awami Express, Haleem Adil said the march after passing through different railway stations would reach Rahim Yar Khan from where it would be held by road.

On March 11, he said, the march would reach Larkana after passing through different districts of Sindh province.

A big rally has been planned at Larkana where the participants would stay for a night, he added.

The PTI leader said the march would start from Larkana on March 12 and would end at Sehwan Sharif.

He said the march was being staged for the defence and stability of the motherland and to express solidarity with armed forces, adding that the peace march would pass through 22 towns and cities of Sindh province.

Haleem Adil said they wanted to convey a message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi through this march that he should desist from casting an evil on Pakistan.

“We want to tell Modi that we are ready to fight and die for the motherland.”

Lauding Prime Minister Imran Khan’s role to defuse tensions between Pakistan and India, he said the prime minister didn’t made tall claims like Modi but took practical steps.

Sarfaraz Ahmed not allowed to address press conference

Pakistan cricket team and Quetta Gladiators captain Sarfaraz Ahmed
Pakistan cricket team and Quetta Gladiators captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was not allowed to go ahead with his scheduled press conference.

Sarfraz was scheduled to address a press conference in Karachi's National Stadium at 4pm, however, the Pakistan Cricket Board asked him to record a message instead.

The press conference of the Gladiators skipper was scheduled as part of pressers held by captains of the franchises of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

It is believed that the Sarfaraz was not allowed to hold the press conference as he would be questioned about being rested for the one-day international (ODI) series against Australia.

Meanwhile, Gladiators' coach Moeen Khan in a press conference, told the journalists that the franchise asked Sarfraz to not hold the presser as it can become a source of contention.

Pakistan has named a 16-member squad for the five-match ODI series against Australia starting March 22 in Dubai.

The selectors have rested six players from the squad that lost 2-3 to South Africa earlier this year. They include skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed, Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Hasan Ali, Shadab Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi, while Hussain Talat has been dropped and Mohammad Hafeez was not considered as he is recovering from a thumb surgery.

Bowlers will set up World Cup win for Pakistan: Pakistan head coach

Mickey Arthur
It seems that realism is slowly creeping into Pakistan cricket and the team management and selectors have come to peace with the fact that the national side’s batting line-up cannot be relied on — at least for the leading role — with the World Cup fast approaching.

That role will be taken up by the bowlers while the batsmen will ensure they play the supporting role perfectly if Pakistan are to win the most prestigious trophy in world cricket for the second time.

“I’m comfortable with the batting we have in place and it is going to do one hell of a job for us but if we have to be brutally honest, our bowlers are going to be the ones who [can] set up a win for Pakistan at the World Cup,” Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur said.

“Our bowling is going to win us the World Cup while our batsmen are going to support the bowlers in this campaign,” added the South African.

Pakistan’s struggles with the bat have been consistent since more than a decade now and the problems seem to have become a stigma now which is hard to get rid of. With the World Cup set to be held in England this year, the conditions, once again pose a challenge to stroke-making.

Arthur, however, is approaching the situation realistically and taking away a significant amount of pressure from his batsmen, who are constantly targeted with criticism.

“We have got to be aggressive with the way we go, we have got to look to strike, look to take wickets and with that our batting will [gradually] grow,” he continued.

However, Arthur is still looking to strengthen the batting line-up. The Pakistan gaffer has recalled explosive-yet controversial batsman Umar Akmal to the national squad for the upcoming One-day International series against Australia.

Umar, who has not played for Pakistan since being sent back from England before the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy due to a failed fitness Test, makes his comeback on the basis of consistent performances for Quetta Gladiators in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL).

The right-hander has accumulated 228 runs in nine outings for the Sarfraz Ahmed-led outfit and is averaging a healthy 38 with an impressive strike-rate of almost 137.

His flamboyant hitting in the UAE leg of the PSL must have been hard to ignore for Arthur, who said he talked to Umar about what it takes to consolidate a place in the Pakistan side.

“I had a meeting with Umar Akmal and discussed exactly where I thought he was. We are looking at the skillset that he brings to the Pakistan team. Obviously, he is a very intelligent player but he knows that he has to conform,” said Arthur.

“He knows that he has got to pass the fitness standards that are required of him. If he does all that he becomes available for selection which he has done.”

With six first team players rested for the Australia ODIs, the selection committee has replaced them with some players who have been consistent performers but were finding it difficult to make it to the national side.

Umar is one of those six players and is part of Arthur’s bench-strengthening project. The former Australia coach indicated Umar can fill in the crucial number six spot in the Pakistan batting line-up, which needs reinforcement.

“With so many of our [main] players not playing it’s a wonderful opportunity to have a look at our bench strength. We are looking for a guy who can come in at number six and take the game on and finish games,” said Arthur.

Preparing a strong bench also helps identify replacements for important veteran members of the national side. With batting all-rounders Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik reaching the end of their careers, Pakistan must also be looking at the post-World Cup shape of the squad.

“There’s Shan Masood, Abid Ali, Saad Ali, Umar Akmal, Hussain Talat, Asif Ali — those are the guys who we think can come into the mix and ultimately will look to fill those spots,” said Arthur about replacing Malik and Hafeez.

Arthur is in the metropolis with PSL side Karachi Kings who play the Gladiators on Sunday to ensure their qualification to the play-offs. Seven more matches, including the final will be played in the city.

The 50-year-old said it was a huge advantage for him to be the Pakistan and Kings head coach at the same time and it helps him identify the ‘ones for the future’.

“It helps me because I’ve a look at all the young talent. That helps me to pick the next best young talent in Pakistan cricket,” said Arthur.

“Inzi and myself look at those names all the time and then we pick them because I have seen them at close quarters, I have seen them under pressure and this is what I have always said.”

Arthur said he has already spotted and noted down the names of some players who he thinks can achieve the Pakistan jersey in future.

“I have picked seven young players from the PSL who I think can go on and do good things for Pakistan. I can know who they are, we can monitor them at the National Cricket Academy, we can put them in coaching programmes, they can come to our skills camps and that’s the big benefit about it.”

The Pakistan head coach gave a special mention to 18-year-old pacer Mohammad Hasnain who clocked 150kph during the UAE-leg of the PSL.

“Mohammad Hasnain, I’ve watched him up-close, have seen him train and work,” said Arthur of the Quetta Gladiators’ youngster.

Iraq rejects foreign forces deployment, military bases on its territory: Baqir al-Hakim

Iraqi Shia cleric and the leader of the National Wisdom Movement, Ammar al-Hakim, delivers a speech during a ceremony marking the 16th death anniversary of Iraq's senior Shia Muslim cleric Ayatollah Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim in Baghdad, Iraq, on March 9, 2019. (Photo by al-Forat news agency)
Iraqi cleric and the leader of the National Wisdom Movement says his fellow countrymen and women reject both a permanent foreign military base on Iraq’s territory and the deployment of foreign combat forces to the Arab country.

“Iraq is a sovereign state, not a subordinate or subjugated one. In this sense, we say no to foreign military bases, to foreign combat forces, to foreign missions, to unilateral provocations, or to attacks on neighboring countries from the Iraqi territory and airspace,” Ammar al-Hakim said during a Saturday ceremony marking the 16th death anniversary of senior Iraqi Muslim cleric and political leader Ayatollah Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim, who was assassinated in 2003 in the city of Najaf.

He added, “There is an attitude that wants Iraq to be entrenched and a prisoner of interests and narrow ideas.”

“And there is another that wants the country to perform its natural role in the (Middle East) region and decide its own fate. This will not come true unless we build a strong and independent state plus efficient institutions in accordance with a unified national strategy,” he added.

“Let us work together to build a strong and capable state, an independent, stable and prosperous Iraq. Let us work together to develop the existing political system. Systems that do not respond to reforms are doomed to failure,” Hakim pointed out.

During a meeting with Jeanine Hennis- Plasschaert, the special UN chief’s representative for Iraq and the head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), in Najaf on February 6, Iraq's top cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani fiercely criticized a statement by US President Donald Trump that American forces must remain in Iraq so Washington can keep a close eye on neighboring Iran.

Ayatollah Sistani said Iraq rejected serving as a launching pad to harm any other country.

He noted that Iraq aspired to have good and balanced relations with all neighboring countries, without interference in their internal affairs.

The remarks came a day after Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi strongly condemned Trump’s comments, stressing that his country would not accept being used for any acts of aggression against other states.

Earlier, Iraqi President Barham Salih had hit back at the US president, saying, “The Iraqi constitution rejects the use of Iraq as a base for hitting or attacking a neighboring country.”

He said Trump had not asked Iraq's permission for US troops stationed there to “watch Iran.”

In an interview with CBS television network broadcast on February 3, Trump highlighted the importance of a military base in Iraq, saying it was crucial to the surveillance of Iran’s activities.

“We spent a fortune on building this incredible base, we might as well keep it. And one of the reasons I want to keep it is because I want to be looking a little bit at Iran” he said in an apparent reference to Ayn al-Asad Airbase in western Iraq, which he visited during an unannounced trip to the country last December.

When asked whether he planned to use US forces in Iraq to “strike” Iran, Trump responded, “No… all I want to do is be able to watch.”

Algeria orders early university as student anti-govt. protests continue

Algerians demonstrate in the northern coastal city of Oran on March 5, 2019 against ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's bid for a fifth term.
Algerian authorities have ordered the universities to commence their spring holiday earlier than scheduled, a move perceived as an apparent attempt to weaken two-weeks-long protest rallies led by students against ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika over his decision to seek a fifth term in office.

The unexpected order was issued by the North African country’s Higher Education Ministry on Saturday, a day after tens of thousands of anti-government protesters filled the streets in central Algiers, the capital, to express their strong dissent against Bouteflika’s 20-year rule.

Demonstrations have been staged almost daily in the capital since February 22, with the 82-year-old leader cautioning demonstrators not to allow their peaceful rallies to be manipulated as he invoked the country's decades-long civil war.

The ministry, without providing a reason for its abrupt rescheduling of the academic calendar, said in decree that the spring break would be brought forward by 10 days, starting on Sunday, instead of March 20.

Bouteflika, who uses a wheelchair and has rarely been seen in public since he suffered a stroke in 2013, infuriated his opponents and unleashed major protests last month after he announced that he would once again participate in the presidential race.

The elections are due to be held on April 18 but protesters are unlikely to give up demanding the resignation of Bouteflika. Opponents also cite what they call chronic corruption and a lack of economic reform to tackle unemployment.

He has been in Switzerland since February 24 for what his office has described as “routine medical tests,” without giving an exact fate for his return home.

On March 7, Bouteflika issued his first warning to his opponents, cautioning them that the unrest, now entering its third week, could create chaos in the oil- and natural gas-producing North African country.

He had promised on March 3 that if re-elected, he would order a referendum on a new constitution and call an early election where he would not run.

Algeria’s divided opposition and civic groups have called for more protests against Bouteflika’s decades-long rule if he proceeds to seek another term.

Some long-time allies of the Algerian president, including at least seven members of the ruling party, the National Liberation Front, have expressed support for the protesters, revealing cracks within the governing elite long seen as invincible.

Trump calls Democrats 'anti-Israel' and 'anti-Jewish'

US President Donald Trump speaks to the press before boarding Marine One at the White House on March 8, 2019, in Washington, DC.
US President Donald Trump has called Democrats "anti-Israel" and "anti-Jewish" after the House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning bigotry and hate.

The House Thursday passed the resolution after backlash from a number of factions across the Democratic Party forced changes to a bill that originally focused on anti-Semitism and remarks about Israel by a Muslim American congresswoman.

The resolution passed in the lower chamber of Congress overwhelmingly, 407 to 23, with all Democrats voting in favor including Representative Ilhan Omar herself, whose legitimate criticism of Israel has been deemed anti-Semitic by some colleagues and exposed deep fault lines among Democrats.

"As members of Congress and Americans we have a solemn, urgent responsibility to fight to end the scourge of bigotry, racism and hatred in our country," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said during the debate on the resolution.

Trump, before leaving the White House to tour tornado damage in Alabama on Friday, said he thought the vote was "disgraceful."

"The Democrats have become an anti-Israel party. They've become an anti-Jewish party," he told reporters.

“I thought yesterday’s vote by the House was disgraceful,” Trump said. “I thought that vote was a disgrace, and so does everybody else if you get an honest answer.”

Omar, a newly elected Democrat Congresswoman from Minnesota, has sparked a firestorm on Capitol Hill over repeated criticisms of Israel and the powerful pro-Israel lobby in Washington that exerts great influence in US politics.

She joined the two other Muslims in Congress, Rashida Tlaib and Andre Carson, in praising the measure's passage.

"It's the first time we have voted on a resolution condemning Anti-Muslim bigotry in our nation's history," they said, noting the worrying rise of extremism in America.

Senator Warren vows to break up Amazon, Facebook, Google

US Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) questions panelists testifying before Senate Armed Services subcommittees on the Military Housing Privatization Initiative in Washington, February 13, 2019.
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren vowed on Friday to break up Amazon, Google and Facebook if elected US president to promote competition in the technology sector.

Seeking to stand out in a crowded field vying to be the Democratic candidate for president in 2020, Warren said at a campaign event in Queens that it was time to challenge the increasing dominance of America’s biggest technology companies.

“We have these giant tech companies that think they rule the earth,” she told a crowd of about 300 people in Long Island City. “I don’t want a government that’s here to work for the giant tech companies. I want a government that’s here to work for the people.”

Amazon abruptly scrapped plans in February to build a major outpost in the neighborhood that could have created 25,000 jobs, blaming opposition from local leaders.

In an event held not far from the proposed Amazon site, Warren said that big tech companies come into towns, cities and states and “bully everyone into doing what they want” and “roll right over” small businesses and startups that are a threat.

“Giants are not allowed to buy out the competition. The competition needs the opportunity to thrive and grow,” she said.

Some of those in attendance said they didn’t know enough about Warren’s proposal to back it fully but they trusted her policy expertise.

“What I like is that she’s proposing big ideas. I think that’s important,” said lawyer Kate Aufses, 32, who said she was undecided about which Democratic candidate she would support.

Earlier in the day, Warren said in a post medium.com/@teamwarren/heres-how-we-can-break-up-big-tech-9ad9e0da324c on Medium that she would nominate regulators to unwind acquisitions such as Facebook's deals for WhatsApp and Instagram, Amazon's deals for Whole Foods and Zappos, and Google's purchases of Waze, Nest and DoubleClick.

Shares of Facebook Inc (FB.O) closed up 0.3 percent on Friday, while Alphabet Inc’s Google (GOOGL.O) fell 0.08 percent and Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) lost 0.3 percent.

Warren also proposed legislation that would require tech companies like Google and Amazon that offer an online marketplace or exchange to refrain from competing on their own platform. This would, for example, forbid Amazon from selling on its Amazon Marketplace platform.

Amazon and Google did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Facebook declined comment.

It is rare for the government to seek to undo a consummated deal. The most famous case in recent memory is the government’s effort to break up Microsoft. The Justice Department won a preliminary victory in 2000 but was reversed on appeal. The case settled with Microsoft intact.

“An archaic idea”

US Congress held a series of hearings last year looking at the dominance of major tech companies and their role in displacing or swallowing up existing businesses, among other things.

Amazon’s business model has displaced brick-and-mortar stores and the company has been criticized for poorly paying its warehouse workers.

Facebook has angered lawmakers for losing track of users’ data and for not doing more to stop foreign meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

Google has clashed with smaller companies, like Yelp, over search placements and has raised concerns it would comply with China’s internet censorship and surveillance policies if it re-enters the Asian nation’s search engine market.

NetChoice, an e-commerce trade group whose members include Facebook and Google, said Warren’s plan would lead to higher prices.

“Senator Warren is wrong in her assertion that tech markets lack competition. Never before have consumers and workers had more access to goods, services and opportunities online,” said Carl Szabo, vice president and general counsel for NetChoice.

In Washington, the president of the US Chamber of Commerce, Tom Donohue, said breaking up the big tech companies would “take us back to the Stone Age.”

“This is not a vision for the future, but an archaic idea that should be dumped in your computer trash can,” he said.

Public Knowledge, a tech policy group, called Warren’s plan a step toward protecting the next generation of businesses, but stopped short of full-throated support for breaking up the tech giants.

Tim Wu, a professor of law, science and technology at Columbia Law School who coined the term “net neutrality” and has warned against an economy dominated by a few giant firms, said in a tweet that it was “heartening” to see the idea of breaking up the tech giants gaining some traction.

Tech companies are some of the biggest political donors. Google spent $21 million to lobby in 2018 while Amazon spent $14.2 million and Facebook spent $12.62 million, according to their filings to US Congress.

Angering a deep-pocketed industry could hurt Democrats, but that is not likely to be a big concern for Warren, who made her political mark and plenty of enemies by going after big banks after the 2007-09 financial crisis. In the Senate, Warren continues to be an outspoken critic of Wall Street and is a leader of her party’s progressive wing.

Other Democratic candidates have also weighed in on the issue.

Senator Amy Klobuchar used her campaign launch speech to vow action on digital issues like privacy, saying “big tech companies” misuse personal data.

Senator Bernie Sanders in 2018 even named a bill after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the Stop BEZOS Act, which would tax big companies if their employees receive public benefits.

South Africa to go ahead with Israel embassy downgrade: President Ramaphosa

Pro-Palestine demonstrators chant slogans outside the US Consulate General in Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa, December 14, 2017.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa says his country is planning to downgrade the status of its embassy in the occupied territories in response to Israel's violation of Palestinians' rights.

Speaking to the parliament in Cape Town, Ramaphosa said South African International Relations and Cooperation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu was working on implementing a decision by the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party to lower diplomatic ties with Israel.

At the end of a conference in December 2017, the ANC decided to downgrade its diplomatic mission in Tel Aviv to a liaison office in an expression of "practical support" for the oppressed Palestinian people, warning Israel that it should pay the price for its "human rights abuses and violations of international law."

Ramaphosa stressed the South African government's resolve to go ahead with the ANC's decision.

"The South African government remains seized with the modalities of downgrading the South African Embassy in Israel and we will communicate once the cabinet has fully finalized on this matter," he said.

"In implementing this conference resolution, we are mindful of South Africa’s responsibility to continue engaging with all parties to the conflict to see where we would be able to provide assistance,” he added.

The South African president further noted that the decision to downgrade the embassy in the occupied lands is driven by Israel's violations of the rights of the Palestinians and the regime' failure to enter negotiations on the so-called two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Last May, South Africa withdrew its ambassador to Tel Aviv in protest at Israel's deadly crackdown on anti-occupation rallies in the Gaza Strip.

South Africa established close ties with the Israeli regime during the apartheid era, but after the collapse of the discriminatory system, the African country began to lean towards Palestine.

Most South Africans have historically supported the Palestinians due to similarities between the Israeli occupation and South Africa’s apartheid rule.

Israel launches fresh Gaza airstrikes, targets Palestinian boat

Palestinian men clear the rubble at the site of an Israeli airstrike near an seaport under construction, near Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip, on March 9, 2019.
Israeli warplanes have conducted fresh air raids on the Gaza Strip in yet another act of aggression against the besieged Palestinian territory.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Israeli army said that its jets had struck several targets allegedly belonging to the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas in the southern and northern Gaza the night before.

Tel Aviv claimed that the aerial assault came "in response to the projectile that was launched from the Gaza Strip" as well as "balloons carrying explosive devices" and attempts to damage "security infrastructure" in the occupied territories.

Gaza security officials said the Israeli strikes had not caused any casualties.

The attacks, however, damaged Palestinian houses and farming land, according to Wafa news agency.

Also on Saturday, the Israeli navy opened fire at a fishing boat near off the northern Gaza. Palestinian media reported that the incident had no casualties.

The Tel Aviv regime carries out regular attacks on the blockaded coastal sliver under the pretext of hitting positions belonging to Hamas, the movement which runs the Palestinian territory.

The coastal sliver has been under a crippling land, air and sea Israeli blockade since 2007 and witnessed three wars since 2008.

Gaza has also witnessed a fresh wave of tensions since March 30, which marked the start of “The Great March of Return” protests.

So far, at least 253 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire during the weekly anti-occupation rallies in Gaza.

Friday's clashes near the Gaza fence left a Palestinian dead and at least 45 others injured.

A recent report, commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council, said that Israeli forces may have perpetrated “war crimes” or “crimes against humanity” during the 2018 Gaza unrest.

Bodies of missing Italian, British Nanga Parbat climbers found

Climbers Tom Ballard and Daniele Nardi were last heard from on February 24 as they climbed the Nanga Parbat, which at 8,125 metres (26,660 feet) is the world's ninth-highest peak.
The bodies of two climbers from Britain and Italy have been found in Gilgit Baltistan nearly two weeks after the pair went missing, the Italian ambassador said on Saturday.

Climbers Tom Ballard and Daniele Nardi were last heard from on February 24 as they climbed the Nanga Parbat, which at 8,125 metres (26,660 feet) is the world's ninth-highest peak.

They were attempting a route that has never been successfully completed.

Earlier, it was reported that a rescue team would be conducting one possibly final search for the climbers on Saturday, after some silhouettes were spotted on the mountain.

Italian ambassador to Pakistan Stefano Pontecorvo tweeted on Saturday that the bodies of the two men had been identified from aerial photos.

"It hurts to announce that the search is officially over," he wrote. "The search team have confirmed that the silhouettes spotted ... at about 5,900 metres are those of Daniele and Tom."

An announcement on Nardi's Facebook page confirmed the deaths.

"We inform you that the research of Daniele and Tom has ended," the post said. "A part of them will always remain on the Nanga Parbat."

The discovery followed an extensive search by a team of Spanish climbers with the help of Pakistani mountaineer Rehmatullah Baig, who was climbing with the men before turning back.

The search was delayed because rescue teams were forced to wait for permission to send up a helicopter after Pakistan closed its airspace on Wednesday in response to escalating tensions with India.

Ballard is the son of British mountaineer Alison Hargreaves, the first woman to conquer Mount Everest solo and without bottled oxygen. She died in 1995 descending K2, the world's second tallest mountain and also in northern Pakistan.

Asad Umar asks FATF president to remove India as co-chair to ensure impartial assessment

Finance Minister Asad Umar
Finance Minister Asad Umar has written a letter to the president of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) asking him to appoint any other member country besides India as co-chair of the Asia-Pacific Joint Group "to ensure that [the] FATF process is fair, unbiased and objective", the Ministry of Finance said on Saturday.

According to a statement released by the ministry, the finance minister has cited "India's animosity towards Pakistan", which he said was well known, as the reason for the request. The finance minister called attention to "the recent violation of Pakistan's airspace and dropping of bombs inside Pakistani territory" which he said was "another manifestation of India's hostile attitude".

"The letter referred to Indian Finance Minister’s statement regarding efforts for global isolation of Pakistan and [the] Indian call for [the] blacklisting of Pakistan during the International Cooperation Review Group (ICRG) meeting on February 18, 2019, which demonstrated Indian intentions to hurt Pakistan’s economic interests," the statement said.

In his letter to the FATF president, the finance minister sought to reason that given the "clear Indian motivation to hurt Pakistan's economic interests, Indian presence among the evaluators and as co-chair of the Joint Group would undermine the impartiality and spirit of the peer review process, which lies at the heart of FATF’s methodology and objective assessment".

"We firmly believe that India’s involvement in the ICRG process will not be fair towards Pakistan," he asserted.

The finance minister, therefore, "urged that [the] FATF appoint another country as co-chair of the Joint Group instead of India to ensure an impartial assessment of Pakistan's progress in regard to the FATF Action Plan.

"The ICRG and FATF meetings must not be allowed to be used as a platform by India to make political speeches against Pakistan. The sanctity of FATF processes require that separate assessments by individual countries for politically motivated outcomes are not allowed under the ICRG review," the finance ministry statement quotes the letter as saying.

The finance minister has assured the FATF president that "Pakistan remains firm in its commitment to work with FATF/ICRG and the Joint Group and to implement the Action Plan".

According to the finance ministry statement, Pakistan raised its concern with the Asia-Pacific Group in June last year, over India’s negative attitude and its intentions to hurt Pakistan’s interests but no action was taken in regard to the re-composition of the Joint Group.

Similar concerns were also raised with the FATF secretariat and ICRG co-chairs on the sidelines of the FATF Plenary of February 2019, the statement added.
