PML-N leadership absolved of sedition charges except Nawaz Sharif

Nawaz Sharif
According to the latest development on the inquiry into sedition case lodged against Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) leadership, Punjab Inspector General said on Saturday due to lack of evidence the police shall not pursue the case except against Nawaz Sharif alone.

IG Punjab Inam Ghani said special investigation team assigned to probe the case has recorded the statement of the complainant.

He said the clauses 121, 123 A and 153 A have been expunged, after the inquiry concluded, from the case due to lack of substance.

The inquiry team concluded it, said the IG, after having recorded the statements from the complainant and probed the video statements implicated in the case.

He said the leadership was nominated in the case due to supporting the speeches by Nawaz Sharif which according to the complainant were tantamount to sedition.

However, the IG noted that due to lack of evidence on the involvement of the leadership, their names have been removed from the case.

The investigation unit overseeing the matter said the rest of the investigations in the case will follow due legal process.

Armenia, Azerbaijan accused each other of violating the ceasefire

Armenia, Azerbaijan Conflict
Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of violating the terms of the Russia-brokered ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh on Sunday, which was aimed to end the worst outbreak of hostilities in the separatist region in more than 25 years.

The ceasefire, clinched after marathon talks in Moscow advocated by President Vladimir Putin, was meant to halt fighting to allow ethnic Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh and Azeri forces to swap prisoners and war dead.

The Moscow talks were the first diplomatic contact between the two since fighting over the mountainous enclave erupted on Sept. 27, killing hundreds of people.

The enclave is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but is populated and governed by ethnic Armenians.

Within minutes of the truce taking effect from midday, both sides accused each other of breaking it.

The Armenian defence ministry accused Azerbaijan of shelling a settlement inside Armenia, while ethnic Armenian forces in Karabakh alleged that Azeri forces had launched a new offensive five minutes after the truce took hold and killed two civilians.

Azerbaijan said enemy forces in Karabakh were shelling Azeri territory and that one civilian had been killed. Both sides have consistently denied each others’ assertions in what has also become a war of words accompanying the fighting.

Azeri President Ilham Aliyev told Russia’s RBC news outlet the warring parties were now engaged in trying to find a political settlement, but suggested there would be further fighting ahead.

“We’ll go to the very end and get what rightfully belongs to us,” he said.

Azeri Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said the truce would last only for as long as it took for the Red Cross to arrange the exchange of the dead.

Speaking at a briefing in Baku, he said Azerbaijan hoped and expected to take control of more territory in time.

Armenia’s foreign ministry said it was using all diplomatic channels to try to support the truce, while Nagorno-Karabakh’s foreign ministry accused Azerbaijan of using ceasefire talks as a cover to ready military action.

PM Khan orders action against overpricing at motorway rest areas

PM Imran Khan
Taking exception to overpricing of food items at rest areas along motorways, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) and the motorway police chief to take action against profiteers fleecing people.

The directives came following a number of complaints were made on the Pakistan Citizen’s Portal.

The prime minister instructed that the issue be taken up at a higher level and strict action be taken to curb the practices of overcharging by tuck-shops at motorway rest/service places.

He called for zone-wise dedicated teams to be assigned by the NHA to check overpricing by carrying out surprise inspections at different timings on a regular basis.

The prime minister also directed the authorities to seek assistance, if required, from the district administration. He also directed that banners encouraging people to lodge complaints on the Citizen’s Portal be also put up at visible places of the rest areas.

People in their complaints lamented that prices being charged at various rest areas’ tuck-shops are almost double or triple the actual market prices. Among the food items reportedly being sold at inflated rates include tea/coffee, juices, mineral water, soft/cold drinks, biscuits, and chips.

Government to use 'all resources' to bring food prices down: PM Imran Khan

PM Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced that, his government will be using "all the resources" at its disposal to bring down skyrocketing food prices in the country.

"Starting Monday in the coming week, our government will use all resources at the disposal of the state to bring food prices down," PM Imran Khan tweeted on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Industries and Production Hammad Azhar said imported wheat and sugar will be released at control rates by provinces to alleviate the inflationary pressure on the masses.

The PM said the government is already examining the reasons behind the recent hike in the prices of food items.

He said the government is investigating if there is a genuine supply shortage, hoarding by mafias, smuggling or a rise in international prices.

PM Imran Khan said the government was checking if the price hike may be due to an increase in "international prices" for palm oil, lentils or any other item.

"From next week, we will have our strategy in place and action will begin using all state organizations and resources to bring down food prices," vowed PM Imran Khan.

Shortly afterwards, Hammad Azhar tweeted a graph to make the point that food inflation was witnessing a temporary spike in South Asia.

"South Asia has witnessed a temporary food inflation spike. Government will take all measures needed to reduce prices of essential commodities. Imported wheat and sugar will be released at control rates by provinces. All options are being examined for other commodities," he tweeted.

China Thanks Pakistan’s support on Hong Kong stance

China Thanked Pakistan’s support
China says ‘appreciates’ Pakistan for its support on Hong Kong during a debate at the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) Third Committee earlier this week.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying said: "We want to express our appreciation to Pakistan and all these countries for speaking out for justice.

Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Munir Akram had made the comments while speaking on behalf of 55 countries, in response to a statement by Germany urging China to respect the rights of Uighur Muslims and expressing concern about the political situation in Hong Kong.

Germany’s UN ambassador Christoph Heusgen had urged China to allow UN rights observers “immediate, meaningful and unfettered access” to Xinjiang and called on Beijing to uphold the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong's residents, according to Al Jazeera.

Cuba had also followed with a statement on behalf of 45 countries supporting China's measures in Xinjiang, stating that the steps taken by Beijing were carried out within the law to safeguard the rights of all ethnic groups in the province

Armenia, Azerbaijan agree on ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh

Armenia, Azerbaijan
After nearly two weeks of fierce clashes, the two arch-rivals, Armenia and Azerbaijan on Saturday reached to a ceasefire and to initiate "substantive talks" over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Bitter fighting in the central Asian region has claimed hundreds of lives, forced thousands to flee, and stirred fears of a full-blown war that could suck in regional powers Turkey and Russia.

Speaking after 11 hours of Moscow-mediated talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the warring sides had agreed to a ceasefire from "12 hours 00 minutes on October 10 on humanitarian grounds."

It was not immediately clear whether the pause in fighting would come into effect at noon in Moscow or the local time in Karabakh.

During the ceasefire, mediated by the International Committee of the Red Cross, the parties will exchange bodies and prisoners, Lavrov said, reading from a statement.

"Concrete parameters of the ceasefire will be agreed separately," the statement added.

Russia´s top diplomat also said that Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to start negotiating a peaceful solution to the territorial dispute.

"Azerbaijan and Armenia begin substantive negotiations with the purpose of achieving a peaceful settlement as soon as possible," Lavrov told reporters, adding that such talks would be mediated by France, Russia and the US.

Renewed fighting over Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian region of Azerbaijan that broke from Baku´s control in a devastating war in the early 1990s, has claimed some 400 lives and forced thousands of people from their homes.

The heavy clashes erupted late last month, with both sides blaming the other for the biggest outbreak in violence since a 1994 ceasefire left the status of Karabakh in limbo.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who has repeatedly vowed to use his military to retake the breakaway province, said earlier that the talks represented a historic opportunity for Armenia.

"We are giving Armenia a chance to settle the conflict peacefully," he said. "This is their last chance."

Armenia´s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said his country was "ready for the resumption of the peace process" led by international brokers.

Heavy clashes continued into Friday, Armenian and Azerbaijani defence officials said, with further civilian deaths reported, even after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the Moscow meeting and appealed for a ceasefire on humanitarian grounds.

Shelling started again in Stepanakert, the provincial capital of Karabakh, where an AFP journalist heard several explosions and saw the remains of a rocket in a crater next to a cemetery for dead soldiers.

A spokesman for the Armenian defence ministry told reporters on Friday that fighting continued despite the negotiations in Moscow.

Mediation efforts

The region's declaration of independence has not been recognised by any country, even Armenia, and the international community regards it as part of Azerbaijan.

The return of fighting has stoked fears in the West of a full-blown war embroiling Turkey, which strongly backs Azerbaijan, and Russia, which has a military treaty with Armenia.

Discussions in Moscow, Azerbaijan and Armenia´s first high-level talks since the fighting broke out took place after Putin called for an end to hostilities and invited the two nations´ foreign ministers to the city.

Putin´s announcement came shortly after mediators from France, Russia and the US, known as the "Minsk Group", launched efforts in Geneva to end the latest flare-up.

The group has sought a solution to the Karabakh conflict for decades but has failed to stop sporadic outbreaks of fighting.

Negotiations in Geneva went ahead without Armenia, which refused to participate while the fighting was ongoing, and there were no public statements following the closed-door talks.

Mounting civilian toll

Since the conflict restarted both sides have accused the other of shelling areas populated by civilians and thousands of people have been displaced by the clashes.

Stepanakert is dotted with damaged buildings and unexploded ordnance following days of shelling. AFP journalists have also witnessed destruction in villages in Azerbaijan near the front line.

Armenia accused Azerbaijan on Thursday of hitting the Ghazanchetsots (Holy Saviour) Cathedral leaving a gaping hole in its roof and several journalists injured.

Armenia´s rights ombudsman Artak Beglaryan told AFP this week that the fighting has displaced around half of Karabakh´s 140,000 residents and forced some 90 percent of its women and children from their homes.

Dozens of civilians have been confirmed killed and the Armenian side has acknowledged 350 military deaths, while Azerbaijan has not admitted to any fatalities among its troops.

Britain's PM Boris Johnson to make statement to parliament on COVID-19 restrictions

Britians PM Johnson to make statement to parliament on COVID-19 restrictions
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will make a statement to parliament on Monday about potential new lockdown restrictions, as the government seeks to tackle a rapidly accelerating second wave of the coronavirus outbreak.

The average daily number of COVID-19 cases in England has doubled in a week, a survey showed on Friday, but the government is facing growing opposition to lockdown measures which have wrought some of the worst economic damage in at least a century.

“The rising incidence in parts of the country mean that it is very likely that certain local areas will face further restrictions,” Edward Lister, a senior aide to the prime minister, said in a letter to lawmakers. “The government is hoping to finalise these details as soon as possible. This pace is imperative if we are to control the spread of the virus.”

The United Kingdom already has the highest official COVID-19 death toll in Europe - 42,679 - while it is borrowing record amounts to pump emergency money through the damaged economy.

As Johnson grapples with both COVID-19 and dissent in party ranks, the economic damage was laid bare on Friday. Gross domestic product rose in August by 2.1% from July, official data showed, not even half the median forecast in a Reuters poll of economists.

PPP chairman says resignation from parliament on the cards

PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday warned the government that several options for the opposition's anti-government campaign are on the cards, including resignation from the parliament.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, the PPP chairman said that his party had been criticising the government since day one and its facilitators. He said that political parties could no longer raise their voices in the "rubber stamp" parliament.

Bilawal warned the government that "those who were not afraid of dictators will not be afraid of a cricketer".

"The media is stopped [from criticising the government] and our interviews are censored," he said. "Insha'Allah, all opposition parties, together, will put an end to this inept government."

The PPP chairman said that the country was failing on all fronts, including foreign and economic policy, as a "selected" government had been imposed on Pakistan.

Bilawal said that the incumbent government had gone so far in their "revenge policy that they filed sedition charges" against Azad Jammu and Kasmir Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider. "The country can no longer bear the burden of this government."

The PPP chairman said that the incumbent government oppresses the people everyday through new tactics. "Where will the people go?"

This government does not distribute the NFC award in a just manner, and that causes damage to the health sector, education sector, local governments, among others.

'Their countdown has begun'

The PPP chairman said that the people were helpless due to the current regime's policies. "Such an authoritarian regime cannot last, their countdown has begun."

Bilawal, responding to the federal government's Pakistan Island Development Authority Ordinance, said: "No Pakistani who believes in the Constitution can tolerate that someone, through a presidential ordinance, overnight, tries to take over the islands of Balochistan and Sindh."

"We strongly condemn this act," Bilawal said.

The PPP chairman demanded that the government withdraw this "unconstitutional" ordinance. "Through such immature acts of a cricketer, the federation is damaged."

Bilawal said that the "whole" province had unanimously rejected the islands' ordinance. "We will not allow you to take a single piece of land through an unconstitutional ordinance."

Bilawal said that the people of Sindh and the city where it is being built — Karachi — were casting aspersions on the government's intentions following their ordinance as the "past experiences were not that good".

"The government should forget that the PPP will hold talks with it after its current policies," he said, adding that despite the whole province protesting, the government did not take back its ordinance.

'Rectify your political stance'

"Everywhere he says that all the institutions are with him. He should know that the institutions belong to Pakistan," he said, adding that Imran Khan should rectify his political stance.

The PPP chairman said that the prime minister failed to hold his sister, Jahangir Tareen, and the Abraaj Group accountable. "Transparency International has also declared that Imran Khan's tenure is when most corruption took place."

Responding to a question, Bilawal said that the PPP was ready to go to jail and that they were gearing up for the protests against the government.

UN calls for 'urgent ceasefire' in Karabakh

UN calls for 'urgent ceasefire' in Karabakh
The United Nations rights chief voiced alarm Friday at civilian suffering in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region after nearly two weeks of clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan, calling for an “urgent ceasefire”.

In a statement, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said it was “deeply worrying that in recent days we have seen populated areas reportedly targeted and shelled with heavy weaponry in and around the conflict area.” There was a need for “an urgent ceasefire due to the impact on civilians,” the statement said.

Her comment came as Armenia and Azerbaijan's foreign ministers were due to meet in Moscow on Friday amid hopes they could broker a halt to the renewed hostilities.

The fresh fighting over Karabakh — an ethnic Armenian region of Azerbaijan that broke from Baku's control in what prompted a devastating war in the early 1990s — erupted late last month.

Both sides blame the other for the biggest outbreak in violence since a 1994 ceasefire.

Bachelet's office said it had received reports that it had not yet been able to verify that some 53 civilians, including children, had been killed in the fighting since September 27.

Some 400 lives have so far been lost including military casualties, and thousands of people have fled their homes.

“I remind all parties to the conflict to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure,” Bachelet said.

'Mutually dehumanising'

All sides in the conflict have an obligation to avoid “the use of explosive weapons with wide area effects in populated areas,” she added.

Bachelet also appealed to countries “with influence over parties to the conflict ... to do everything within their power to ensure respect for international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians.” Bachelet voiced particular outrage over reports that cluster munitions had been used in the conflict area.

“Cluster munitions scatter small, often bright or colourful bomblets over wide areas, many of which fail to explode immediately but can then kill and maim for years afterwards,” she pointed out.

“The use of such munitions should stop immediately.” The UN rights chief also called on all sides to refrain from using “inflammatory, pejorative or discriminatory language to stoke divisions.”

“Hate speech leads nowhere but to a mutually dehumanising and destructive hatred that, as we tragically see now, periodically erupts into conflict and loss of life,” she said.

And she warned that the violence could hamper efforts to rein in the spread of Covid-19 in the region.

PTA bans TikTok over complaints against 'immoral content'

PTA bans TikTok
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued instructions to impose a ban on the highly popular video-sharing app TikTok after receiving a "number of complaints from different segments of the society", the regulatory body said in a press statement on Friday.

According to the press release, several complaints were made "against immoral/indecent content" that was shared on the app.

PTA said it had earlier issued a "final notice" to TikTok and gave the application "considerable time to respond and comply with" instructions for development of an effective mechanism for proactive moderation of "unlawful online content".

However, the company "failed to fully comply" with PTA's instructions after which the authority decided to ban it in the country.

The statement added that PTA "is open for engagement" and would review its decision if TikTok develops a mechanism to moderate the content that is posted on the video-sharing platform.

TikTok has not released a comment on PTA's announcement so far.

The move was criticised by Bakhtawar Bhutto-Zardari, who tweeted saying "immoral content is not on TikTok, it’s embedded in our sexist society".

In a tweet, former premier Benazir Bhutto's daughter, while citing increasing reports of rape and assault cases against women and children, lamented that the society has "deteriorated so much. Look [at] what’s happening in madrassas, in open public spaces — the problem is NOT TikTok."

The video-sharing app, which is owned by China’s ByteDance, has been downloaded almost 39 million times in Pakistan and is the third-most downloaded app over the past year after WhatsApp and Facebook, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower.

The app has been a target of several complaints and court petitions calling for its ban in Pakistan citing “immoral” content. In July, PTA said it had issued a "final warning" to TikTok to remove “obscene and immoral content” on its platform.

Arslan Khalid, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s focal person on digital media, had at the time backed the move, saying stringent measures were necessary as the platforms were not understanding the severity of the situation.

“The recent exploitation of female TikTokers, the objectification and sexualisation of young girls on TikTok was causing huge pain to the parents & was proving detrimental for our society,” he wrote on Twitter.

According to TikTok, however, Pakistan is among the top five markets where the largest volume of videos was removed over violations of its community guidelines

In its recent transparency report, TikTok said it deleted more than 49 million videos which broke its rules, between July and December 2019. About a quarter of those videos were deleted for containing adult nudity or sexual activity.

About one-third of the videos were from India (where the Chinese app is now banned), followed by the United States and Pakistan where it has removed over 3m videos for violating its community guidelines.

Nawaz Sharif wants PML-N workers to protest while he sits in London: PM Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan lashed out at former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, saying that he was instigating his supporters to come out to the streets while the PML-N supremo himself was in London.

Saying that the PML-N was handing out money to his supporters, the prime minister said,"I want to tell their supporters to receive money from them and even eat their qeemay ke naan. But stay inside your homes [and don't come out to protest]," he said.

He lashed out at the opposition parties for sticking together when they were called to account for their crimes. "Two years after the JIT was formed and the courts gave their verdict, he says "Mujay Kyun Nikala" (Why was I ousted?)," stated the prime minister, mocking Nawaz.

The prime minister lashed out at former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz's spokesperson, Mohammad Zubair, for comparing the PML-N supremo to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini.

"I was watching TV and he was comparing Nawaz Sharif to Ayatollah Khomeini during a talkshow," said PM Imran. "He [Zubair] was saying that Khomeini was also exiled," added the premier.

PM Imran said that Khomeini was sent abroad on gunpoint while Nawaz faked numerous illnesses to do the same. Taunting the PML-N chief, the prime minister said that human rights minister Shireen Mazari cried when she came to know Nawaz was suffering from so many diseases.

"We were in a cabinet meeting that lasted for six hours [on the Nawaz Sharif issue], doctors were also present in it. When the doctors told us that Nawaz was suffering from so many diseases, I saw that our Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari was crying," he joked, as the audience laughed.

"Anyone who is familiar with Shireen Mazari knows what type of diseases we were told [Nawaz was suffering from] that made her cry," he added, as the audience laughed further.

Coming back to Zubair's comparison of Nawaz and Khomeini, the prime minister said that the two were not similar as "the people of Iran loved Ayatollah Khomeini".

"Ayatollah Khomeini did not have niharis brought to him on helicopters from Lahore," he said. "He lived [on a simple diet] of yoghurt and roti," said the premier.

Referring to the accountability process he had faced before he was the prime minister. "Despite being a cricketer, I presented the court with documents dating back to 40 years," he said.

Continuing his criticism of the PML-N, the prime minister mocked Talal Chaudhry indirectly, saying that "a senior leader of their party went for 'organisational restructuring' at a lady's house at 3:00AM and was then wondering why her brothers beat him up," he said.

'Will throw you in jail'

Reiterating his stance that the government will not give an NRO to the opposition, PM Imran Khan said that the country had been destroyed because retired Gen Musharraf had extended the favour to the PML-N and the PPP a decade ago.

He said that the reason Nawaz always had problems with the military leadership was because they knew about his crimes. "He wants to control the ISI because they find out about his corruption," he said. "This is why Nawaz Sharif fights with every army chief."

The prime minister said on the other hand that he enjoys good relations with the armed forces because the intelligence agency knows what type of a lifestyle he has.

"Their problem is not democracy, I am a democrat," he said. "I got elected from five constituencies," he added.

U.S. imposes new Iran sanctions that may spook European banks

U.S. imposes new Iran sanctions that may spook European banks
The United States on Thursday slapped fresh sanctions on Iran’s financial sector, targeting 18 banks in an effort to further choke off Iranian revenues as Washington ramps up pressure on Tehran weeks ahead of the U.S. election.

The move freezes any U.S. assets of those blacklisted and generally bars Americans from dealing with them, while extending secondary sanctions to those who do business with them. This means foreign banks risk losing access to the U.S. market and financial system.

The Treasury Department said in a statement the prohibitions did not apply to transactions to sell agricultural commodities, food, medicine or medical devices to Iran, saying it understood the need for humanitarian goods.

However, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the United States of targeting Iran’s ability to pay for basic necessities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“U.S. regime wants to blow up our remaining channels to pay for food & medicine,” Zarif said on Twitter. “Conspiring to starve a population is a crime against humanity.”

Iranian Central Bank governor Abdolnaser Hemmati dismissed the sanctions as political propaganda and played down their practical impact.

“Rather than having any economic effect, the American move is for U.S. domestic propaganda and political purposes, and shows the falsity of the human rights and humanitarian claims of U.S. leaders,” Hemmati said in a statement.

Analysts said the secondary sanctions may further deter European and other foreign banks from working with Iran, even for permitted humanitarian transactions.

Russia successfully tests new hypersonic missile

Russia successfully tests new hypersonic missile
Russia on Wednesday said it had successfully tested a new hypersonic anti-ship cruise missile in a move hailed by President Vladimir Putin as a “great event” for the country.

The military said that the Tsirkon missile was fired from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate in the White Sea on Tuesday morning in the Russian Arctic and successfully hit its target.

Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian military’s General Staff, told Putin — who turned 68 on Wednesday — that it was the first time the missile had successfully struck a target at sea.

“The tasks of the launch were carried out. The test-fire was successful,” he told Putin.

Gerasimov said that the missile hit its target 450 kilometres away in the Barents Sea and hit a Mach 8 speed — eight times the speed of sound.

Russia has in the last years touted the development of futuristic new weapons which it hopes will give it the edge in any arms race with the United States at a time of growing tensions with the West.

Putin said that the test-firing of Tsirkon was a “great event not just in the life of our armed forces but for all of Russia”.

He said that such weapons, which Putin claimed have no equivalent worldwide, “will without doubt in the long term boost the defence capabilities of our state”.

The defence ministry said that the plan was to equip both warships and submarines with the Tsirkon.

Putin had revealed the development of the new weapon in a state of the nation address in February 2019, saying it could hit targets at sea and on land with a range of 1,000 kilometres and a speed of Mach 9.

Russia boasts of developing a number of “invincible” weapons that surpass existing systems and include Sarmat intercontinental missiles and Burevestnik cruise missiles.

The first Avangard hypersonic missiles were put into service in December last year.

The programme is not without risks and seven people were killed in an explosion at a missile test site in August 2019. Western experts linked the blast to work on the Burevestnik.

Mike Pence, Kamala Harris spar over Covid-19 in vice presidential debate

Mike Pence, Kamala Harris spar over Covid-19 in vice presidential debate
Trading barbs through plexiglass shields, Republican Mike Pence and Democrat Kamala Harris turned the only US vice presidential debate of 2020 into a dissection of the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, with Harris labeling it “the greatest failure of any presidential administration”.

Pence, who leads the president’s coronavirus taskforce, acknowledged that “our nation’s gone through a very challenging time this year,” yet vigorously defended the administration’s overall response to a pandemic that has killed 210,000 Americans.

The meeting, which was far more civil than last week’s chaotic faceoff between US President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden, unfolded against an outbreak of coronavirus now hitting the highest levels of the US government.

Trump spent three days at the hospital before returning to the White House on Monday, and more than a dozen White House and Pentagon officials are also infected, forcing even more into quarantine.

With less than four weeks before Election Day, the debate was one of the final opportunities for Trump and Pence to reset a contest that could be slipping away. They’re hoping to move the campaign’s focus away from the virus, but the president’s infection — and his downplaying of the consequences — are making that challenging.

Trump and Biden are scheduled to debate again on October 15, though the status of that meeting is unclear. The president has said he wants to attend, but Biden says it shouldn’t move forward if Trump still has coronavirus.

Republicans desperately want to cast the race as a choice between two candidates fighting to move the country in vastly different directions. Biden and Harris, they say, would pursue a far-left agenda bordering on socialism; the Democrats say Trump’s administration will stoke racial and other divides, torpedo health care for people who aren’t wealthy and otherwise undercut national strength.

Harris, 55, made history by becoming the first Black woman to stand on a vice presidential debate stage. She condemned the police killings of Breonna Taylor in Kentucky and George Floyd in Minnesota and spoke about the protests against racial injustice in policing that followed, which Trump has portrayed as “riots” as he calls for law and order.

“We are never going to condone violence but we must always fight for the values that we hold dear,” Harris said. “I’m a former career prosecutor. I know what I’m talking about. Bad cops are bad for good cops.”

Pence, 61, said his heart breaks for Taylor’s family but he trusts the US justice system. He called it “remarkable” that Harris, as a former attorney general and prosecutor, would question the grand jury’s decision in the case not to charge an officer with killing her.

He also pushed back against the existence of systemic racism in police departments and rejected the idea that law enforcement officers have a bias against minorities.

“I want everyone to know who puts on the uniform of law enforcement every day, President Trump and I stand with you,” Pence said. “We don’t have to choose between supporting law enforcement, proving public safety and supporting our African American neighbors.”

The candidates also clashed on taxes — or specifically, Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns four years after repeatedly promising to do so. The New York Times reported last month that the president pays very little personal income tax but owes hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.

“It’d be really good to know who the president owes money to,” Harris said.

“The one thing we know about Joe, he puts it all out there. He is honest, he is forthright,” she added. “Donald Trump, on the other hand, has been about covering up everything.”

Pence defended Trump as a job creator who has paid more than his fair share of taxes and shifted toward Biden: “On Day One, Joe Biden’s going to raise your taxes.”

Both candidates sidestepped difficult questions at times.

Pence refused to say whether climate change was an existential threat or whether Trump would accept the election results should he lose, while Harris declined to say whether Biden would push to expand the number of justices on the Supreme Court.

But so long as the coronavirus is ravaging the White House and killing several hundred Americans each day, the campaign will almost certainly be a referendum on the Trump administration’s inability to control the pandemic, which Republicans have sought to downplay or ignore altogether for several months.

Pence’s effort to focus on other topics was undercut by the mere fact that the candidates and moderator were separated by plexiglass shields, seated more than 12 feet apart and facing a crowd of masked audience members who faced expulsion if they removed their face coverings. The candidates on stage revealed test results earlier in the day proving they were not infected.

While the audience was forced to wear face masks throughout, second lady Karen Pence removed her mask as she joined her husband on stage at the end of the debate.

Though the night was about Pence and Harris, the men at the top of the ticket also made their presence known.

Trump released a video just three hours before the debate calling his diagnosis “a blessing in disguise” because it shed light on an experimental antibody combination that he credited for his improved condition — though neither he nor his doctors have a way of knowing whether the drug had that effect.

He tweeted several times during the debate, offering this assessment at one point: “Mike Pence is doing GREAT! She is a gaffe machine.”

Biden too kept a stream of tweets going; he posted his plans for confronting the virus, shared clips from the debate exchanges and praised Harris, who he said “is showing the American people why I chose her as my running mate”.

Hyundai presents first seven hydrogen-powered trucks to customers

Hyundai presents first seven hydrogen-powered trucks to customers
South Korean carmaker Hyundai on Wednesday presented the first seven hydrogen-powered trucks to customers in Switzerland, out of 50 such vehicles scheduled this year to bring zero-emission commercial vehicles to European roads.

For long haul, proponents say hydrogen-powered trucks have an advantage over electric rivals as they have a greater range and require less charging times but their uptake and mass production has been slow because they are expensive.

However, a McKinsey study in January said that once relative efficiencies of the power sources and lifetime costs of a truck are factored in, green hydrogen could reach cost parity with diesel by 2030.

Hyundai has been partnering with Swiss companies to build a value chain covering the production of green hydrogen from hydropower, hydrogen charging stations and the service and maintenance of the trucks.

The customers, which include supermarket chain Migros, will be leasing the trucks from Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility (HHM) to transport goods around the country, backed by the new hydrogen infrastructure.

Leases are on a pay-per-use basis that does not require an initial investment. Hyundai plans to put 1,600 trucks on Swiss roads by 2025.

Its H2 Xcient trucks have a 190-kilowatt fuel cell stack and seven high-pressure tanks holding 32 kgs of hydrogen, giving them a range far further than comparable vehicles powered by electric batteries on the market now.

HHM was set up by Hyundai and Swiss startup H2 energy last year to partner with Hydrospider, a joint venture of H2 Energy, industrial gas maker Linde and Swiss power utility Alpiq.

Hyundai plans for production capacity of 2,000 units of Xcient fuel cells per year by 2021 to support its expansion plans as demand for clean transport grows.

It views Switzerland as a test case for hydrogen fuel cells in heavy goods transport, said In Cheol Lee, executive vice president and head of the commercial vehicle division at Hyundai Motor Company.

“With successful delivery of the first H2 Xcient fuel cell trucks, we proudly announce our plan to expand beyond Europe to North America and China, where we are already making great progress,” he said.

As for Europe, Hyundai has said it will next target Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway.

Opposition using different tactics to get NRO: Shibli Faraz

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz on Wednesday termed the opposition’s anti-government drive a political tactic to get a national reconciliation ordinance (NRO).

Addressing a press conference in Karachi today, Shibli Faraz said that the opposition wanted to throw dust in the eyes of people through the campaign, adding that they had no moral ground to launch the anti-government movement.

The government will not bow down to the pressure tactics and will continue accountability of the corrupt elements, he added.

Shibli said that the main objective of the opposition leaders to hold public gatherings was to secure their personal interests.

The minister said that the past regimes had ruined the state institutions. However, the incumbent government was making all-out efforts to steer the country out of the crises and put it on the path to progress.

Earlier today, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz had said that the incumbent government believed in equal development of all parts of the country including Sindh.

Talking to media in Karachi after visiting Mazar-e-Quaid, Shibli Faraz had said development projects were being carried out under 1.1 trillion rupees development packages announced by Prime Minister Imran Khan for Karachi city.

The minister had said the federal government will also extend help and assistance to rain affectees in Sindh province.

Kuwaiti emir names top security official Sheikh Meshal as new crown prince

The new emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf
The new emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf, has named the country's top security official, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah as the new crown prince, on Wednesday.

The official Kuwait news agency said that the Al-Sabah royal family "blessed" Nawaf's decision to appoint the new crown prince, one day before the parliament decides in a session to confirm the move.

The 80-year-old Meshal has served as the deputy chief of the Kuwait National Guard since the past 16 years. He has kept out of the political disputes between the Al-Sabah family.

Political rows are not uncommon in a country like Kuwait, which unlike other Gulf states, enjoys a vibrant parliament that has legislative powers through which ministers can be kicked out.

Members of the royal family have accused each other over the past couple of years of corruption and political conspiracies.

Exactly one week ago, Nawaf was sworn in as the new emir after his half-brother Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, who was the previous emir, passed away due to a cardiac arrest after being admitted for two months in a hospital.

Sheikh Meshal is the seventh son of the 10th Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah. He assumes the mantle of crown prince at a time when the country is struggling to grasp with important issues such as low crude prices due to the COVID-19 global impact and whether Kuwait City should establish ties with Tel Aviv or not.

The National Guard is an elite corps which is in charge of defending Kuwait's territory and Sheikh Meshal is considered the most powerful man of the corps.

Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah dies at 91

Last month, Kuwait emir Sheikh Sabah passed away at the age of 91 from a heart attack. Sabah, following an unspecified condition, was flown to the United States in July for medical treatment after a surgery.

Dubbed as the "dean of Arab diplomacy" Sheikh Sabah had ruled the Arab country since 2006 and had commandeered its foreign policy for the past 50 years.

Sheikh Sabah earned the title "dean of Arab diplomacy" for his efforts to restore relations with states that had thrown their weight behind Iraq during the 1990-91 Gulf War.

He came to power in January 2006 after Emir Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah was deposed on health grounds by the Kuwaiti parliament just nine days into his new role as the Emir.

During his time as prime minister of Kuwait under Emir Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, he was considered by many as the de facto ruler of the oil-rich country.

The Pentagon on Tuesday said the US military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff have almost entirely gone into self-quarantine after one of the Coast Guard service chiefs tested positive for coronavirus.

US defence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, stressed that the military’s top brass — with the exception of the Coast Guard vice commandant, Admiral Charles Ray — had all tested negative so far and were still carrying out their duties.

But the disclosure risks adding to a growing sense of uncertainty about operations at the highest levels of the US government after President Donald Trump himself was infected, along with senior White House staff and other Republican leaders.

The White House said the rise in cases among officials in Washington has not disrupted the government.

Representative Adam Smith, chairman of the Democratic-led House Armed Services Committee, issued a terse statement taking aim at Trump and warning “our adversaries are always looking for any weakness to exploit.”

“While our military can still operate while leadership is quarantined, the national security implications of the President’s recklessness cannot be overstated,” Smith said.

All potential close contacts from Ray’s meetings at the Pentagon were tested Tuesday morning and that none of them exhibited symptoms, Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement.

“We have no additional positive tests to report at this time,” Hoffman said.

“There is no change to the operational readiness or mission capability of the US Armed Forces.”

Ray attended meetings late last week with the US military’s top brass, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army General Mark Milley, Trump’s top military adviser, in the ultra-secure “Tank” at the Pentagon.

US officials said Milley was self-isolating, as was the vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and military leaders including the chiefs of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Space Force. General Paul Nakasone, head of the National Security Agency and US Cyber Command, also met with Ray as did the head of the National Guard.

Two officials said the Marine Corps commandant, General David Berger, did not meet with Ray last week and that Assistant Commandant General Gary Thomas attended the meeting in his place. The Marine Corps confirmed Berger was traveling last week but declined further comment.

Berger would be the only chief of a military service who did not require self-isolation.

The Coast Guard disclosed earlier on Tuesday that Ray had tested positive on Monday for the virus after feeling mild symptoms over the weekend. It said Ray will be quarantining at home.

Babar Azam vows to face Zimbabwe fully prepared in upcoming series

Pakistan’s T20I captain Babar Azam
Pakistan’s T20I captain Babar Azam on Wednesday has vowed to take the field against Zimbabwe "with full preparation" for the upcoming series.

“We want to gain momentum while playing against Zimbabwe [so that we are prepared] before leaving for the New Zealand tour,” the Pakistani top order batsman explain.

Pakistan are scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20Is against Zimbabwe in October-November, after which the Green Shirts will travel to New Zealand, where they will play two Tests and three Twenty20 matches.

Noting that there were uncertainties surrounding the game due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic, Azam said he was grateful that the game is carrying on.

He said he has now become accustomed to living in bio-secure bubbles.

While speaking about the National T20 cup, the top order batsman said he will be joining Central Punjab in Rawalpindi. “I haven't met domestic cricketers for a long time," he added.

Talking about the dressing room environment and overall pressure in the game, Azam said he usually holds conversations with his fellow cricketers to reduce the pressure.

“Can't sit quietly in the dressing room before my turn,” the rising star remarked.

Azam also spoke about how he practices hard on the pitch and under difficult conditions to prepare for the worst.

"The secret to my success is that I always play my natural game," he said.

Misbah aims to pick pool of 22 for Zimbabwe ties

Chief selector-cum-head coach Misbah-ul-Haq
Chief selector-cum-head coach Misbah-ul-Haq is planning to name a pool of 22 players during the second phase of the ongoing National T20 Cup in Rawalpindi for the One-day International and Twenty20 International series against Zimbabwe in Oct-Nov this year.

In a video message released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Misbah said though he had held an initial meeting with the panel of selectors — comprising of six coaches of the National T20 Cup participating teams — the second round of discussion would be held in Rawalpindi as by then the performances of maximum players would have given a clear indication.

“We have a plan to select 22 players for both formats [ODI and T20] for the Zimbabwe series. Further we are going release some of the players after the one-day series to enable them participate in the domestic season,” Misbah said.

The head coach hoped the National T20 Cup and the Zimbabwe matches would provide a perfect platform for the selectors to pick the best talent for the tour of New Zealand and two mega events next year, which includes the T20 World Cup and T20 Asia Cup.

Misbah said for the series against Zimbabwe, it will also be important that Pakistan win to raise the confidence level of the players, besides to test the best youngsters.

“It is our first priority to build a match-winning combination as victory against Zimbabwe will also raise the morale of the boys so we have to consider carefully how many youngsters can be tried,” he said.

Misbah added since Pakistan would be playing a One-day International after a long time, intra-squad matches would also be held to prepare the squad for that format.

Pakistan last played three ODI matches series against Sri Lanka in Karachi in September last year, winning it 2-0 after opening fixture was washed out.
