Opposition to submit no-trust motion against NA speaker and his deputy

asad qaiser and qasim sori
Enraged with their "biased remarks" about the no-trust motion against PM Imran Khan, the joint Opposition has decided to table no-confidence motions against National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser and Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri.

The draft of the no-trust motions against the NA speaker and deputy speaker, signed by over 100 MNAs, has been sent to the Opposition’s leadership, the sources privy to the matter said.

As per the draft of the no-trust move, the NA speaker and his deputy have been accused of being biased. It said that the duo has violated the rules as they have not yet resigned from their party’s posts.

The duo has been running the house as per the directions of their party and instead of remaining neutral, they have been exhibiting a biased attitude against the Opposition, the sources said quoting the draft.

“Asad Qaiser and Qasim Khan Suri have been attending the party meetings held with Prime Minister Imran Khan in the chair,” it added.

The fate of the duo is expected to be decided in a meeting of the heads of the Opposition parties scheduled for Monday, the sources added.

Opposition slams NA speaker

The joint opposition on Saturday took strong exception to NA Speaker Asad Qaiser’s remarks about the possibility of failure of the no-confidence motion against PM Imran Khan.

They had said that the speaker could not make partisan statements, and he exhibited a biased attitude against the Opposition.

PPP Parliamentary leader in Senate Sherry Rehman had said that his act by itself renders himself unfit to preside over any such session, and by saying that the vote of no-confidence was a foreign conspiracy, he was suggesting that the PTI government was only in place due to foreign support.

“Is he a PTI office-bearer or the speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, where he was supposed to safeguard the integrity of the outcome by remaining neutral,” she had added.

Sherry said by saying that the vote of no-confidence would be defeated, Asad Qaiser betrayed his office, and “in my view, he cannot preside over the House or the process”.

The senator had said the PTI seemed to be operating from a place of deranged paranoia, as they claim that the no-confidence motion was an international conspiracy against the prime minister and his party; the truth is that the government needs a reality check.

“Over the years, the constant contradiction of his own statement has become the prime minister’s international identity, now the incumbent government is pushing the country towards a constitutional crisis and a national security catastrophe,” she had added.

Sherry had said no-trust motion seems to have pushed the entire government over the edge of reason.

“The irony is that that actions of the government in the aftermath of the vote of no-confidence only proves that the PTI is completely incompetent and incapable of governing the country,” she had said.

Former speaker National Assembly and PMLN senior leader Sardar Ayaz Sadiq had also criticised Asad Qaiser’s statement.

“By giving the statement that no-confidence motion will fail, and terming it an international conspiracy, the speaker has become controversial,” he had said.

Sadiq had asked him to present some evidence before to the nation to prove that the Opposition's motion against PM Imran is a world conspiracy. He had questioned the NA speaker whether inflation, record foreign debt, economic catastrophe, unemployment, budget deficit were all foreign conspiracies.

“His statement is in clear contradiction to the constitutional and parliamentary requirements of the Speaker's Office,” he had added.

He had said if Asad Qaiser was so sure that the no-confidence motion would fail, he should immediately convene the NA session.

PPP senior leader Naveed Qamar had said “Speaker's clear inclination towards the government is a matter of concern.” He had said Asad Qaiser had made himself controversial by issuing such a statement.

"Important sessions of the National Assembly should be chaired in an impartial manner," urged Qamar.

No good use of cryptocurrency in pakistan said Reza Baqir

cryptocurrency in pakistan
State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Reza Baqir has reiterated his stance on cryptocurrency, saying it doesn’t have a use case that can further the goals like financial inclusion or innovation key objectives of the banking regulator.

During a panel discussion at the 13th Karachi Literature Festival on Sunday, Mr Baqir agreed that the underlying technology behind the crypto — i.e. distributed ledger — “is an absolutely useful technology” and it has the potential to solve a lot of problems that the world faces right now in providing access to finance.

However, “when we look at the value proposition offered by crypto right now, the use cases that have been brought forward have just been exchanges”, Mr Baqir said, explaining that people wanted the regulator to allow Bitcoin use, speculate on it and then also transfer money abroad.

“Every new thing has some benefits and some risks. It’s a policymaker’s job to make an assessment of the balance… in particular, make a judgement whether the benefits outweigh the risks with regards to the use of cryptocurrencies in Pakistan,” he said.

The SBP governor also questioned the lack of visibility in cryptocurrencies. “There is no way that the regulator or a law enforcement agency has visibility on who is doing transactions and for what purpose. And, therefore, around the world there is a lot of misuses [of cryptocurrency], including human rights violations, trafficking of people, money laundering and many other things,” he said.

SBP’s key goal was to promote financial inclusion and stop the misuse of the financial system, “especially because Pakistan is a country that is on the grey list of the FATF”, Mr Baqir said, referring to global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which has placed Pakistan on its increased monitoring list since 2018.

He also mentioned that the financial system in Pakistan had been used for either money or financing of terrorism in the past.

PIA has been granted two more operating licences by China

pia
The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has been granted two more operating licences by the Chinese authorities, for Guangzhou and Xian, in addition to Beijing. Now the national flag carrier can start scheduling passenger flights to and from these stations.

Previously, PIA had the operating licence only for Beijing, but the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) granted two more operating licences to the airline, enabling it to conduct flight operations between Pakistan and the two Chinese cities, PIA Country Manager Qadir Bux Sangi said on Sunday.

He said that as per the current standard operating procedure of CAAC, international carriers can operate one weekly flight for China. PIA is operating PK854-855 ISB-XIY-PEK-ISB by using Xian's first entry point for Beijing as per CDC approval of the Xian government.

“After the change in the current standard operating procedure of CAAC, we have an option to start our scheduled flights for Guangzhou and Xian also,” he added.

Responding to a question, he said the national flag carrier has also applied for the acquisition of an operating licence for Chengdu station which is under consideration and hopefully, PIA will get its approval next month.

Regarding cargo flights, Sangi said that PIA has got approval from the Chinese authorities to operate chartered cargo flights for Kunming and Shenzhen while approval for Kashgar (Xinjiang) is under process.

He expressed the confidence that the chartered cargo flights to different Chinese cities would help further enhance trade and economic activities between Pakistan and China.

About the resumption of PIA’s weekly Islamabad-Xian-Beijing-Islamabad passenger flights which are currently suspended due to COVID-19 situation, the country manager said that the local government authorities in Xian have been requested permission to resume the flights to Xian as per the previous schedule.

“We are waiting for the formal approval for resumption of flights so that we can facilitate the travellers from both countries,” he added.

WHO congratulates Pakistan for vaccinating 100 million citizens

vaccination
The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Sunday congratulated Pakistan on vaccinating 100 million citizens against COVID-19.

“Heartiest Congratulations to Pakistan,” the WHO wrote on Twitter.
"The WHO applauds Govt of Pakistan for having over 100 million individuals fully vaccinated against COVID-19 virus."

“This indicates the tremendous efforts made by the Government of Pakistan in ensuring that everyone across the country has access to COVID-19 vaccination,” the tweet said.

Earlier in the day, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Health Services Faisal Sultan has also announced the news on the microblogging platform.

The COVID-19 positivity rate in Pakistan dropped to 2% on March 6, the lowest level in the last two months as per data issued by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) Sunday morning.

The last time the positivity ratio dropped this low was on January 5 when the country reported a 1.8% positivity rate.

The latest stats show that Pakistan logged only 755 new cases of coronavirus, pushing the overall case count to 1,514,258 in a single day.

The national COVID-19 body said that the new infections were detected when it conducted 37,661 diagnostic tests countrywide during the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the country's daily COVID-19 death toll fell below 10 once again as only seven people succumbed to the virus overnight, pushing the total number of deaths to 30,265.

Moreover, the active case count after the recent deaths and 886 recoveries further diminished to 29,611.

Fazal ur Rehman, Bilawal's ultimatum turned into 'wooden horse', Fawad Ch

fawad ch
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry claimed on Sunday that the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s 48-hour deadline and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s five-day ultimatum turned into a “wooden horse”.

Taking to Twitter, Chaudhry claimed that the Opposition will go home with its no-confidence motion and all its "promises will fall flat in the coming week."

The minister also shared that PM Imran Khan, after hosting the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) council of foreign ministers conference in Islamabad, will go on an “important tour”.

Bilawal, earlier today, had advised PM Imran to resign before the joint Opposition tables the no-confidence motion against the incumbent government.

On the other hand, Fazl had announced on Wednesday that the Opposition will table a no-confidence motion to topple the PTI-led government within the next 48 hours.

Saudi Arabia lifts most Covid restrictions

Saudi Arabia lifts most Covid restrictions
Saudi Arabia said on Saturday it was lifting most Covid restrictions including social distancing in public spaces and quarantine for vaccinated arrivals, moves that could facilitate the arrival of Muslim pilgrims.

The decision includes suspending “social distancing measures in all open and closed places” including mosques, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) cited an interior ministry source as saying.

Masks will only be required in closed spaces, according to the decision, which came into effect on Saturday.

The Saudi kingdom, which is home to Islam's two holiest places in Makkah and Madinah, will no longer require vaccinated travellers to provide a negative PCR or rapid test before their arrival in the kingdom or to quarantine, SPA said.

The Covid-19 pandemic has hugely disrupted Muslim pilgrimages, which are usually key revenue earners for the kingdom, bringing in some $12 billion annually.

Hosting the pilgrimages is a matter of prestige for Saudi rulers, for whom the custodianship of Islam's holiest sites is their most powerful source of political legitimacy.

In 2021, the coronavirus outbreak forced Saudi authorities to dramatically downsize the Haj for a second year, and just 60,000 fully vaccinated citizens and residents of the kingdom took part.

Since the start of the pandemic, Saudi Arabia has registered more than 746,000 coronavirus cases, 9,000 of them fatal, in a population of some 34 million.

No-trust motion to turn into 'motion of ease' for PM Imran: Interior Minister

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad
Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad has said that the no-confidence motion that the Opposition parties' coalition is trying to bring against the incumbent government will turn into a "motion of ease" for Prime Minister Imran Khan after its failure.

The interior minister challenged the Opposition to bring the no-trust motion against the PTI-led government.

"They have been shouting [about the no-confidence motion] for two months but they should finally convene the assembly session and table a requisition to introduce the no-trust motion."

"These people used to say that that they are not neutral but now even the Opposition is claiming that they are neutral but nothing in this world is neutral," says Sheikh Rasheed.

He said that defeat is the Opposition's fate, as he referred to the failure of a no-trust motion against former prime minister Benazir Bhutto by a 12 votes margin.

"They [Opposition] will lose with the same number of votes and the no-trust move will become a move of ease for Imran Khan," the minister said.

Rasheed went on to say that the Opposition doesn't have a future plan and that means they want to bring a "technocrat" government in the country.

If they get successful, it will create many problems for the country, he added.

It may be recalled that Defence Minister Pervez Khattak on Saturday claimed that over 15 Opposition members would go “missing” on the day the no-confidence motion is presented before the National Assembly.

Addressing a rally in his home district, the senior PTI leader claimed that the Opposition would face “embarrassment” when they would present the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Parliament.

“Seats on the Opposition benches would remain empty on the day of the motion,” he predicted, adding that their motion would help them reassess their worth.

At the same time, Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Molana Fazlur Rehman and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif expressed satisfaction with Opposition's number game for no-trust move, sources said.

Fazl and Nawaz on Saturday expressed satisfaction over the Opposition's numbers to secure the no-confidence motion against the PTI government.

The Opposition leaders held discussions to move the no-trust motion during a telephonic conversation, sources privy to the matter had said.

According to sources, Fazl briefed Nawaz on the Opposition’s progress and the two leaders agreed to oust the incumbent government.

No need for martial law yet, says Putin

President Vladimir Putin
President Vladimir Putin on Saturday dismissed concerns that some sort of martial law or emergency situation could be declared in Russia.

Putin’s comment followed days of speculation that the introduction of martial law could be imminent.

He said such a measure was imposed only when there was significant internal or external threat. “We don’t plan to introduce any kind of special regime on Russian territory — there is currently no need,” Putin said.

However, in recent days the Russian government has been forced to clamp down on protests against the war in Ukraine. Measures have also been taken to rein in the media.

The Russian president said the Western sanctions were akin to a declaration of war and warned that any attempt by any country to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine would be tantamount to entering the conflict.

Putin reiterated that his aims in Ukraine were to defend Russian-speaking communities through the “demilitarisation and de-Nazification” of the country so that it became neutral.

Ukraine and Western countries have dismissed this as a baseless pretext for the invasion he launched on Feb 24 and have imposed a sweeping range of sanctions aimed at isolating Moscow.

“These sanctions that are being imposed are akin to a declaration of war but thank God it has not come to that,” Putin said, speaking to a group of women flight attendants at an Aeroflot training centre near Moscow.

He said there were no conscripts involved in the military operation in Ukraine, which he said was being carried out only by professional soldiers.

“There is not one conscript and we don’t plan for there to be,” Putin said. “Our army will fulfil all the tasks. I don’t doubt that at all. Everything is going to plan.”

Russia’s flagship airline Aeroflot said on Saturday that it was suspending all its international flights beginning March 8.

An Aeroflot statement on the “temporary suspension of all international flights from March 8,” cited new “circumstances that impede the operation of flights,” noting that all domestic routes would continue unchanged as well as flights to neighbouring Belarus.

Russia’s civil aviation body on Saturday said it had “recommended” Russian airlines operating rental planes registered in foreign countries cease flights abroad in order to avoid the seizure of the planes in connection with Western sanctions.

“As a result, such flights overseas are due to cease at 2100 GMT on Saturday, and flights from abroad at 2100 GMT on Monday,” civil aviation agency Rosaviatsia said in a statement.

“This recommendation is due to the very high risk of grounding or arrest of the aircraft of Russian companies abroad,” he added. More than half of the commercial aircraft in Russia are leased, according to Aviation Week, an industry publication.

Rosaviatsia also recommended Russians seeking to return home from foreign countries arrange flights transiting through countries that had not joined sanctions, such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Qatar, the UAE, Turkey and Serbia.

Another Russian carrier, S7, announced the suspension of all its international flights due to sanctions imposed on Russia over the country’s invasion of Ukraine last week.

The airline sector was one of the first to be affected by the economic fallout from the Ukrainian conflict.

Tragedy unfolding on outskirts of Kyiv

Tragedy unfolding on outskirts of Kyiv
Exploding shells blew apart roadsides on Saturday and Russian warplanes bombed stretches of the horizon as thousands of Ukrainians scrambled to escape Kyiv’s war-shattered outskirts by any means possible.

The roads on Kyiv’s western edge bear witness to a human tragedy whose scale grows ever greater as Russia’s assault on the Ukrainian capital becomes more determined and indiscriminate.

The Russian forces’ initial assault on Kyiv — launched with missile strikes and an airborne assault on an airbase — stalled at the end of last week.

The two sides have since been locked in a long-range shelling war along Kyiv’s outskirts that has put working class towns such as Bucha and Irpin in the line of fire.

But people fleeing the two towns said their resolve to stay broke down when Russian warplanes started circling overhead and dropping bombs on Friday.

“Warplanes. They are bombing residential areas — schools, churches, big buildings, everything,” accountant Natalia Dydenko said after a quick glance back at the destruction she left behind.

The 58-year-old was one of thousands of people walking with their children and whatever belongings they could carry down a road leading toward central Kyiv and away from the front.

The metric booms of Russia bombs dropped from warplanes circling over Bucha and Irpin provided a morbid backdrop for their desperate march.

“It began two days ago. It wasn’t as heavy before, but two days ago it started getting really heavy,” she said.

People were trying to get to the remains of a bridge leading to Kyiv over the Irpin River which Ukrainian forces blew up last week to stall the Russian advance. Ukrainian soldiers with assault rifles swinging off their shoulders helped wheelchair-bound pensioners and mothers with prams cross a few wooden planks tossed over the river on Saturday.

Thousands of people massed in stony silence under the shattered remains of the original concrete bridge while awaiting their turn to pass.

A group of soldiers was digging anti-tank missile launchers into foxholes on the Kyiv side of the river.

Another group was preparing new supplies of shoulder-launched missiles and Kalashnikovs that could be ferried back across the wooden planks toward the front. A long-range missile whistled overhead. A hollow thud about half a minute later signalled still more destruction somewhere in the general vicinity of northern Kyiv.

“We were waiting it out. But yesterday, when a plane flew by and dropped something on us, we simply had to run,” said Galina Vasylchenko, walking with her 30-year-old daughter toward the makeshift bridge.

The seeming shift in Russia’s strategy from shelling to aerial bombings is a bad omen for the Ukrainian capital. Russian warplanes have bombed and killed dozens in the central town of Chernihiv and the eastern city of Kharkiv in the past week.

Many analysts felt that Kyiv’s heritage would keep Russia from bombing the city of three million people. But the destruction is creeping closer to Kyiv.

The town of Bucha — the further out of the two towns — had witnessed the first fighting and parts of the area are now all but razed to the ground.

That same level of violence is now raining down on Irpin.

A supermarket and petrol station that on Friday stood at a large junction on the border between Bucha and Irpin was just ruins on Saturday.

Soldiers were ushering the fleeing residents onto buses on the Kyiv side of the Irpin River because walking on that part of the city’s streets was no longer safe.

Thousands more piled their belongings into cars and tried to get out of Irpin by taking a circuitous route that leads to Kyiv’s main train station from the southwest.
