Coronavirus: ‘Pakistan Govt’s no-evacuation decision vote of confidence for China’

Pakistan’s no-evacuation decision vote of confidence for China
Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi has termed Pakistan’s decision to not hastily evacuate Pakistani nationals in Wuhan, the centre of a deadly coronavirus outbreak, “a vote of confidence for China.”

“China will continue to ensure safety & health of Pakistani brothers & sisters & provide them with all necessary assistance,” an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China, quoted him as saying that in a series of tweets.

The Twitter statement came in the wake of Friday’s telephonic conversation between Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his Chinese counterpart.

“State Councilor & Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone call with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. Qureshi first conveyed PM Imran Khan’s best wishes to Premier Li Keqiang. He expressed Pakistan’s strong support for China’s efforts to contain the outbreak,” read the statement.

FM Qureshi expressed Pakistan’s readiness to do its best to help China overcome this challenge as Pakistan will be sending a military aircraft carrying assistance supplies to China soon and that the people of Pakistan stand by the brotherly Chinese people during this difficult time.

Qureshi said, while the world has lauded China’s timely and effective response, some elements are trying to create panic, which Pakistan strongly opposes, adding the government of Pakistan trusts that China is fully capable of ensuring safety and health of foreign nationals in China.

He was further quoted as saying that Pakistan appreciated China is taking care of Pakistani nationals in China like its own. “Pakistan firmly believes that under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, the Chinese people will win the battle against the outbreak as soon as possible.”

The statement said: “Wang Yi passed on Premier Li Keqiang’s greetings to PM Imran Khan. He said that under the direct leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has put in place a nationwide mechanism & taken decisive measures to contain & mitigate the outbreak.”

Wang Yi said, with all measures falling into place, China has the capacity, confidence and determination to win the final victory. China and Pakistan are close neighbors with a fine tradition of mutual support and assistance.

He said, at a time when the Chinese people are facing difficulties, Pakistan is doing its utmost to help, which once again speaks volumes about the deep friendship between the two countries.

CNG stations across Sindh opened for 12 hours

CNG stations across Sindh opened
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across Sindh opened this morning for 12 hours.

Gas supply resumed at CNG stations in Karachi as well as other parts of the province at 7 am, which will remain open until 7pm, according to Sui Southern Gas Supply Company (SSGC) spokesperson.

Low gas pressure and a spike in domestic demand owing to cold weather conditions prevailing in parts of the country have forced the company to halt gas supply to the CNG sector, causing many problems for people, especially commuters who largely rely on public transport for a daily commute.

Earlier, on Jan 11, the All Pakistan Compressed Natural Gas Association (APCNGA) and All Karachi Transport Ittehad (AKTI) had announced to hold a protest outside the SSGC office in Karachi over non-supply of CNG.

AKTI president Irshad Bukhari said that Sindh-produced gas fulfils energy needs of 70 per cent of the country and the SSGC is bent on destroying businesses in the province. He said that the city’s 70 per cent of transport relies on CNG and continuous closure is CNG filling stations is badly affecting their businesses.

China's isolation grows as coronavirus toll reaches 259

China's isolation grows as coronavirus toll reaches 259
China faced deepening isolation over its coronavirus epidemic on Saturday as the death toll soared to 259, with the United States and Australia leading a growing list of nations to impose extraordinary Chinese travel bans.

With Britain, Russia and Sweden among the countries confirming their first infections, the virus has now spread to more than two dozen nations, sending governments scurrying to limit their exposure.

The US toughened its stance on Friday by declaring a national emergency, temporarily barring entry to foreigners who had been in China within the past two weeks.

“Foreign nationals, other than immediate family of US citizens and permanent residents, who have travelled in China within the last 14 days will be denied entry into the United States,” Health Secretary Alex Azar said.

Australia said it was barring entry to non-citizens arriving from China, while Australian citizens who had travelled there would be required to go into “self-isolation” for two weeks.

Vietnam suspended all flights from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan effective from Saturday. Similar expansive restrictions have been announced by countries including Italy, Singapore, and China's northern neighbour Mongolia.

The US, Japan, Britain, Germany and other nations had already advised their citizens not to travel to China.

Beijing insists it can contain the virus and called Washington's advice against travel to China “unkind”. “Certainly it is not a gesture of goodwill,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.

The US emergency declaration also requires Americans returning from the ground zero Chinese province of Hubei to be placed in mandatory 14-day quarantine, and health screening for American citizens coming from other parts of China.

The virus emerged in early December and has been traced to a market in Hubei's capital Wuhan that sold wild animals.

It spread globally on the wings of a Lunar New Year holiday rush that sees hundreds of millions of Chinese people travel domestically and overseas.

In a bid to stop the contagion, the government has extended the holiday through this weekend and urged people to avoid public gatherings.

Many provinces and cities have called on companies to remain closed for another week after the holiday ends on Monday.

The economic fallout continued on Saturday as Apple announced that its China stores would be closed until February 9, “out of an abundance of caution and based on the latest advice from leading health experts”.

With public anger mounting in China, Wuhan's top official admitted late Friday that authorities there had acted too slowly, expressing “remorse and self-reproach”.

“If strict control measures had been taken earlier the result would have been better than now,” Ma Guoqiang, the Communist Party chief for Wuhan, told state media.

Wuhan officials have been criticised online for withholding information about the outbreak until late December despite knowing of it weeks earlier.

China finally lurched into action last week, effectively quarantining whole cities in Hubei and tens of millions of people.

Unprecedented safeguards imposed nationwide include postponing the return to school, cutting bus and train routes, and tightening health screening on travellers nationwide.

But the toll keeps mounting at an ever-increasing pace, with health authorities on Saturday saying 46 more people had died in the preceding 24 hours, all but one in Hubei.

Another 2,102 new infections were also confirmed, bringing the total to nearly 12,000 — far higher than the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome outbreak of 2002-03.

SARS, which is caused by a pathogen similar to the new coronavirus and also originated in China, killed 774 people worldwide — most of them in mainland China and Hong Kong.

The World Health Organisation declared the outbreak a global emergency on Thursday but did not advise international trade or travel restrictions.

It warned on Friday that closing borders was probably ineffective in halting transmission and could accelerate the virus's spread.

But authorities around the world pressed ahead with preventive measures.

Thai health officials on Friday said a taxi driver became the kingdom's first case of human-to-human transmission.

Thailand joins China, Germany, Japan, France and the US with confirmed domestic infections.

The health crisis has dented China's international image and put Chinese nationals in difficult positions abroad, with complaints of racism.

More than 40,000 workers at a vast Chinese-controlled industrial park in Indonesia — which also employs 5,000 staff from China — were put under quarantine, the facility said on Friday.

On the same day, China flew overseas Hubei residents back to the centre of the outbreak in Wuhan on chartered planes from Thailand and Malaysia, citing “practical difficulties” the passengers had encountered overseas.

Countries have scrambled to evacuate their nationals from Wuhan, with hundreds of US, Japanese, British, French, South Korean, Indian and Mongolian citizens evacuated so far, and more countries planning airlifts.

Russia said it would evacuate more than 2,500 of its citizens holidaying on China's Hainan island, far from the epicentre.

Palestinian Authority cuts all ties with Israel and US

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
The Palestinian Authority has cut all ties with the United States and Israel, including those relating to security, after rejecting a Middle East peace plan presented by US President Donald Trump, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday.

Abbas was in Cairo to address the Arab League, which backed the Palestinians in their opposition to Trump's plan.

The blueprint, endorsed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calls for the creation of a demilitarised Palestinian state that excludes Jewish settlements built in occupied territory and is under near-total Israeli security control.

“We've informed the Israeli side ... that there will be no relations at all with them and the United States including security ties,” Abbas told the one-day emergency meeting, called to discuss Trump's plan. Israeli officials had no immediate comment on his remarks.

Israel and the Palestinian Authority's security forces have long cooperated in policing areas of the occupied West Bank that are under Palestinian control. The PA also has intelligence cooperation agreements with the CIA, which continued even after the Palestinians began boycotting the Trump administration's peace efforts in 2017.

Abbas also said he had refused to discuss the plan with Trump by phone, or to receive even a copy of it to study it: “Trump asked that I speak to him by phone but I said 'no', and that he wants to send me a letter ... but I refused it.”

Abbas said he did not want Trump to be able to say that he, Abbas, had been consulted. He reiterated his “complete” rejection of the Trump plan, presented on Tuesday.

The blueprint also proposes US recognition of Israeli settlements on occupied West Bank land and of Jerusalem as Israel's indivisible capital.

The Arab League foreign ministers meeting in Cairo said the plan would not lead to a comprehensive and just peace, and that the League would not cooperate with the US in implementing it.

The ministers affirmed Palestinian rights to create a future state based on the land captured and occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war, with East Jerusalem as capital, the final communique said.

Foreign ministers from Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, among others, said there could be no peace without recognising Palestinian rights and a comprehensive solution.

After Trump unveiled his plan, some Arab powers had appeared, despite historic support for the Palestinians, to prioritise close ties with the US and a shared hostility towards Iran over traditional Arab alliances.

Three Gulf Arab states — Oman, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates — attended the White House gathering where Trump announced his plan alongside Netanyahu.

On Tuesday, Netanyahu said he would ask his cabinet this week to approve the application of Israeli law to Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

Such a move could be a first step towards formal annexation of the settlements and the Jordan Valley — territory Israel has kept under military occupation since its capture in 1967.

Most countries consider Israeli settlements on land captured in war to be a violation of international law. Trump has changed US policy to withdraw such objections.

Islamabad stands with Beijing in battle against coronavirus: FM Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi
Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Saturday assured his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi that Pakistani people "stand firmly with their Chinese brothers" and will provide full assistance as Beijing tackles the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

During the conversation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told Qureshi that Pakistan’s offer for help and support to China in this difficult time once again highlighted the deep friendship between the two neighbours.

Wang noted that Pakistan had nearly a thousand citizens in Wuhan, and also thanked the Pakistani government for trusting the Chinese government and deciding not to rush them out of the country.

In the same phone call, Wang noted that a certain country has turned a blind eye to the recommendations put forward by the World Health Organisation and “imposed sweeping travel restrictions against China”.

“This kind of overreaction can only make things even worse. It's not the right way to deal with the pandemic,” Wang told Qureshi. The Chinese foreign minister also assured him that Beijing will continue to safeguard the safety and health of Pakistanis and provide them with all necessary assistance.

Wang Yi remarked that both China and Pakistan were close neighbours and had a fine tradition of helping each other.

He stated that under President Xi Jinping’s personal deployment, China had established a nationwide mechanism and taken decisive measures to prevent and control the epidemic.

“At present, all work is progressing in an orderly manner, and China is fully capable and confident in achieving its final victory,” he added.

In their phone call, Qureshi told Wang that he was confident that China will “surely win” the battle against the coronavirus outbreak under President Xi Jinping’s leadership.

Qureshi in the conversation also told Wang that Pakistan was willing to provide China with all help in fighting the epidemic and added, “the Pakistani side will send military supplies to China in the near future.”

“The international community generally appreciates China’s timely and effective measures to deal with the epidemic, but there are also some forces trying to take the opportunity to create panic, and Pakistan firmly opposes this,” assured Qureshi.

The phone call between the two leaders comes at a time when China faces deepening isolation over its coronavirus epidemic with the United States leading a growing list of nations to impose extraordinary Chinese travel bans.

With Britain, Russia and Sweden among the countries confirming their first infections, the virus has now spread to more than two dozen nations, sending governments scurrying to limit their exposure.

The US toughened its stance Friday by declaring a national emergency, temporarily barring entry to foreigners who had been in China within the past two weeks.

That follows similar steps by countries including Italy, Singapore, and China's northern neighbour Mongolia.

A virus similar to the SARS pathogen has killed 259 people in China and spread around the world since emerging in a market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.

On Saturday, China's National Health Commission said nearly 12,000 people have been infected by the novel coronavirus.

Outside mainland China, there have been more than 100 infections reported in more than 20 countries.

The World Health Organisation has declared an international emergency over the outbreak.

Pakistan on Friday halted flights to and from China with immediate effect, a civil aviation official said.

The Pakistani government has said it was monitoring the situation in China and is in close contact with the relevant authorities in order ensure safety of Pakistani students in Wuhan amid a coronavirus outbreak that has killed 170 people, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

“Islamabad has taken up the issue of food shortages with concerned officials and we are assured by the Chinese government of full cooperation in this regard," Foreign Office Spokesperson Aaisha Farooqui said at a press briefing.

In response to questions about the evacuation of Pakistani citizens from Wuhan, the epicenter of deadly virus, the spokesperson said, “Islamabad is monitoring the evolving situation and will take a decision after consultations among all the stakeholders.”

No Pakistani will be allowed to travel back from China till completion of 14-day quarantine: Mirza

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza
Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza has announced no Pakistani will be allowed to travel back to the country from China till they complete a 14-day observation period.

The SAPM, while addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Saturday, said that the agreement in this regard had been finalised in a meeting held with the Chinese envoy in Pakistan.

However, the official informed reporters that further details of the agreement are still being worked out.

Mirza shared that the policy is being implemented after China declared that no Chinese citizen will be allowed to travel abroad till the completion of the 14-day observation period.

"Those declared free of the virus after the period will be issued with a certificate that assures the airport officials that they are free from the disease," Mirza said.

“Through this one measure we have ensured Pakistan remains free from the disease. Because our case definition says that travelling and staying in China is an important factor [behind the spread of the disease],” said the SAPM.

Dr Mirza stated that If Pakistan was able to control the disease in Pakistanis present in China, then it has secured the country from the disease, according to the information that doctors have at this point.

Dr Mirza also shared with the reporters that the country will soon receive the health kits which would allow the country to detect the virus. “From tomorrow or today we will start carrying out tests to determine the coronavirus,” said Dr Mirza.

Dr Mirza also shared that from today onwards the government will launch an awareness campaign on electronic media regarding the disease. He shared that the campaign will explain the origins of the disease and also advise the people on the precautionary measures to be taken by people regarding the disease.

“Chairman Pemra has reached out to all the TV channels. Through public service messaging, we will brief the public,” said Dr Mirza. He said the government was hoping that through the campaign the people will get to know the basics of the virus.

Dr Mirza also reiterated once again that Pakistan was yet to detect the first case of the virus in the country. While giving the update on the four Pakistani students diagnosed with the disease, Dr Mirza said that the students were being kept under observation.

He added that the early detection of the disease also helped the students. SAPM had announced on Wednesday that four Pakistani students in China were tested positive for the coronavirus.

The SAPM, however, refused to share the names of the affected students with the media. "The government will take good care of the students who have contracted the virus," he said at the presser.

How your clothes become microfibre pollution in sea

How your clothes become microfibre pollution in sea
From the polar ice cap to the Mariana Trench 10 kilometres below the waves, synthetic microfibres spat out by household washing machines are polluting oceans everywhere. The world has woken up over the last year to the scourge of single-use plastics, from bottles and straws to ear swabs and throw-away bags, resulting in legislation to restrict or ban their use in dozens of countries.

A lot of this visible debris winds up in the sea, where it gathers in huge floating islands called gyres, entangles wildlife from turtles to terns, and hangs suspended in water like dead jellyfish.

But a major source of marine pollution -- microscopic bits of polyester, nylon and acrylic -- has up to now gone largely unnoticed, experts say.

Most people don´t realise it, but "the majority of our clothes are made from plastic," said Imogen Napper, a researcher at the University of Plymouth.

"We wash our clothes regularly, and hundreds of thousands of fibres come off per wash," she told AFP, "This could be one of the main sources of the plastic pollution into the environment."

"How do we remove something that is so small?", she added.

A 2015 report from the Ellen McArthur foundation estimated that half-a-million tonnes of microfibres leached into waterways every year, with 53 million tonnes of new textiles produced annually.

The average family in the United States and Canada unleashes more than 500 million microfibres into the environment each year, according to the Ocean Wise organisation.

Recent research has focused on how to reduce the volume of micro-pollution shed when we wash clothes.

Buy less clothing:

The vast majority of those minuscule bits of textile -- whether synthetic or not -- are intercepted during water treatment, but nearly 900 tonnes winds up in the ocean all the same.

In less developed countries, however, far more of those particles will not get intercepted, adding to the flood of plastic streaming into the sea.

Microplastics, say marine biologists, are almost certainly as harmful to microscopic ocean creatures as flimsy shopping sacs are to sea turtles.

But forensic clues are hard to come by, explains Peter Ross, co-author of the Ocean Wise report.

"The evidence disappears quickly, with weak or dead micro-organisms eaten by other species," he explained.

Recent research has focused on how to reduce the volume of micro-pollution shed when we wash clothes -- besides the obvious step of simply washing them less often.

"When you do the laundry, you can reduce the impact by lowering the temperature -- above 30 degrees Celsius textiles break down more easily," said Laura Diaz Sanchez, a campaigner for NGO Plastic Soup Foundation.

"Liquid detergent is better than powder, which has a scrubbing effect," she added. "Also, don´t use a dryer."

Buying less clothes also decreases microfibre pollution because first-time washings release by far the most microfibres.

Buying less clothing is likewise important: studies have shown first-time washings release by far the most microfibres.

"This is something we can stop," insisted Mojca Zupan, founder of the Slovenian-based startup PlanetCare.

"Your car has filters, your washing machine should have them too," she said, explaining how the ones she makes -- endorsed by the Plastic Soup Foundation -- are self-installing. "Every machine made from now on should be neutral to the environment."

'Fast fashion' culture:

There are other laundry gadgets that make environmental claims, some of them contested.

Spiky laundry balls -- themselves made of plastic -- and mesh bags to contain a load are also promoted as eco-friendly accessories for use in dryers.

"It may be useful to stop big entanglements but it doesn´t do anything for tiny fibres," said Francesca de Falco, a researcher at the Institute for Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials in Italy.

Bottom line? There are no miracle solutions. "The only one would be to not wear any clothes at all," said Sanchez.

The best approach to tackle the problem is with separate solutions tailored to each step of the process -- clothing manufacture, washing, and treatment plants, said de Falco.

Each synthetic material has properties, such as the way in which it is woven, that may have an impact.

In an effort to do better, some brands work with scientists to test clothes particularly prone to shedding microplastics, such as down jackets and stretch T-shirts.

Are natural fibres the answer? Not so simple, experts say. Cotton, for example, requires huge quantities of water and pesticide when grown.

"Switching to natural alternatives is not really the answer because it can be very expensive and they have their own environmental problems," said Napper.

"We live in a ´fast fashion´ culture -- when you consider how much we actually buy, it is quite scary."

Airbus sponsored team owned by executives to be investigated

Airbus sponsored team owned by executives to be investigated
Malaysia’s anti-graft agency is investigating allegations by Britain’s Serious Fraud Office that Airbus sponsored a sports team owned by executives of Malaysia-based AirAsia while negotiating airplane orders, it said on Saturday.

UK prosecutors said on Friday Airbus had failed to prevent individuals associated with the company from bribery involving AirAsia Group and its long-haul unit AirAsia X.

Airbus on Friday agreed a record $4 billion settlement with France, Britain and the United States, after prosecutors said it had bribed public officials and hid the payments as part of a pattern of worldwide corruption.

The disclosures, made public after a nearly four-year investigation spanning sales to more than a dozen overseas markets, came as courts on both sides of the Atlantic formally approved settlements with Europe’s largest aerospace group.

“Under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act we are empowered, and have jurisdiction, to investigate any act of corruption committed by any Malaysian citizen or permanent resident in any place outside Malaysia,” MACC Chief Commissioner Latheefa Koya said in a statement.

“In the case of the Airbus-AirAsia disclosures, I confirm that the MACC is in touch with the UK authorities and is already investigating the matter.”

The SFO’s allegations concern a 2012 sponsorship agreement between the Caterham Formula 1 racing team and Airbus’ then parent EADS.

AirAsia officials have strongly denied any wrongdoing.

The company said it would issue a statement on the matter later in the day.

Airbus did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Pakistan will the next big Asian market

Pakistan will the next big Asian market
Pakistan may the big Asian market for tech startups according to a report published by Germany’s Deutsche Welle. The report posits that there is growing interest in tech among Pakistan’s young population where the increasing level of local capital being employed in the economy is creating more opportunities for tech entrepreneurs.

“Pakistan’s tech ecosystem has been slowly gaining momentum in the last few years,” says Hena Husain, founder of London-based communications startup The Content Architects.

“It is home to a strong tech talent base and it’s still competitively affordable, which makes it ideal for early-stage founders like myself.”

Husain’s company works with a development team located in Karachi, considered the heart of business and tech hub.

It was in this city where Careem, a transportation startup was acquired by Uber for $3.1 billion and according to Hena the tech market in Karachi is growing by the hour.

A McKinsey & Co’s report cited by DW listed Pakistan amongst the fastest-growing economies with 720 startups in 2010 out of which 67% are still operational and 100 of them effectively raising funds.

Adding to this Iskander Pataudi, a Pakistani-born tech professional working in Berlin suggests that the increase in interest in tech around the world has led investors to show interest in Pakistan, which is an emerging market, said DW.

“A few Pakistani tech startups have raised huge funding rounds at a time where our economy is just keeping its head above water,” he says.

“This makes sense, considering we have a huge market of young, digitally-savvy consumers and increased 3G and 4G connectivity.”

Pataudi notes that May 2018 was the turning point when Pakistan witnessed its “first and only exits Pakistan has seen so far” when Daraz, e-commerce platform was acquired by China’s Alibaba Group for an estimated $200 million – a positive indicator “something was about to happen.”

How this tech buff’s leap of faith announced Karachi on the digital landscape.

Similarly Airlift, an app-based bus service founded just 11 months ago, raised a Series A funding round of $12 million in August 2019, led by US-based venture capital (VC) firm First Round Capital.

According to Rabeel Warraich, founder of Pakistan-based venture capital fund Sarmayacar, a stable political landscape provided by President Imran Khan has encouraged companies to invest.

“Tech startups that were once considered risky investments are more commonly looked upon by venture capitalists as ‘high-yield opportunities,'” said Warraich.

Prime Minister Imran Khan recently launched the ‘Digital Pakistan’ initiative aimed at introducing modern technology for public welfare.

WhatsApp to stop working on millions of iOS, Android phones

WhatsApp to stop working on millions of phones
Messaging service WhatsApp will no longer work on millions of smartphones from 1 February.

The Facebook-owned app stopped supporting a number of devices on December 31 and on February 1 it will declare lots more iOS and Android handsets out of date.

Just a month after WhatsApp ended support for some of the older smart mobile models, the Facebook-owned instant messaging App has now added more devices to the list of the phones that won't be able to run WhatsApp.

WhatsApp said the move was necessary in order to protect the security of its users.

Smartphones using Android 2.3.7 and older, and iPhone iOS 8 or older, are those affected by the update.

The operating systems that WhatsApp is dropping support for are legacy operating systems, which are no longer updated or installed on new devices.

Most users will simply be able to update their operating systems in order to continue using the messaging service.

However, certain devices, such as iPhone 4s, which only support iOS 7, will no longer be compatible with the app.

“The office would be responsible for increasing sustainable partnerships with the private sector, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community and organizations,” she added.

UK officials say 2 people test positive for novel coronavirus

UK officials say 2 people test positive for novel coronavirus
British health officials said on Friday two people had tested positive for the novel coronavirus, in the country's first confirmed cases since the deadly outbreak emerged in China and began to spread globally this month.

"We can confirm that two patients in England, who are members of the same family, have tested positive for coronavirus," Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, said in a statement.

"The patients are receiving specialist NHS care, and we are using tried and tested infection control procedures to prevent further spread of the virus," he added, referring to the National Health Service (NHS).

Whitty said the state-funded NHS was "extremely well-prepared" and officials were "working rapidly to identify any contacts the patients had, to prevent further spread".

“We have been preparing for UK cases of novel coronavirus and we have robust infection control measures in place to respond immediately,” he added.

The SARS-like virus epidemic which originated in the central Chinese city Wuhan has so far killed 213 people and spread to at least 18 countries around the world.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday declared it an international public health emergency.

Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, has been subject to an unprecedented lockdown, preventing residents from leaving in a bid to stop the deadly virus from spreading further.

Thousands of foreigners were among millions of people confined in the metropolis, and numerous countries have begun airlifting their citizens out.

A plane chartered by Britain to evacuate its citizens and other foreign nationals on Friday departed the city with 110 people aboard — 83 Britons and 27 foreigners.

It will land at an air force base in central England at around 1:00pm (local time), with returning Britons to be isolated for 14 days at a medical facility in the northwest of England.

It is understood the newly-confirmed cases of the virus in Britain are not located in that region.

UK health officials declined to reveal where they had occurred citing patient confidentiality.

Opposition slams govt for not evacuating Pakistanis stranded in Wuhan

Opposition slams govt for not evacuating Pakistanis stranded in Wuhan
Opposition parties slammed the government on Friday for not repatriating Pakistanis stranded in Wuhan and at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

The criticism from opposition lawmakers came during a session of the Senate where the outbreak of the disease in Wuhan and the measures that the government had taken were discussed.

Leader of the House Senator Shibli Faraz said the government had deposited $840 into the bank accounts of Pakistani students. He said the Chinese government was taking care of Pakistanis stranded in Wuhan.

Senator Mushahidullah of the PML-N criticised the government for not doing anything to evacuate Pakistani students from China. He said that the mothers of those students in Pakistan were "upset and crying" out of worry for their children. He said that important issues were being ignored by authorities.

"Pakistan has the largest embassy in China," he said. "People there [in the embassy] don't seem active."

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) chief Siraj ul Haq urged authorities to keep contact with parents of the Pakistani students stranded in China. He said that it was unfortunate that the students were running out of money.

PPP leader and former interior minister Rehman Malik said the government should send a special plane to bring back Pakistanis from Wuhan. He said if there was risk of the disease spreading in Pakistan then a proper screening process should be conducted so that the virus is contained.

Earlier, the government said it would not evacuate Pakistani students stranded in Wuhan as it was not advisable to do so. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Zafar Mirza said during a press conference that government will not become a part in spreading the virus.

He said the government stands with its Chinese counterpart and would respect the directions of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Beijing.

"We don't want to take any emotional decision which will cause this virus to spread further," he said. "It is also our responsibility to ensure that our citizens in Wuhan are being properly taken care of and see to it whether they are being provided food or items of daily use or not," he added.

Erdogan hits out at some Arab countries' 'treason' over Trump plan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday blasted some Arab countries for backing a Middle East plan unveiled by the United States, condemning it as "treason".

"Some Arab countries that support such a plan commit treason against Jerusalem, as well as against their own people, and more importantly against all humanity," Erdogan told his party's lawmakers in the parliament.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday unveiled long-awaited details of a US plan for solving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, warning it may represent the last chance at statehood for the Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called the peace plan the "slap of the century".

Turkey, a strong advocate of the Palestinian cause, had condemned the plan.

"The United States' so-called peace plan is stillborn," Turkey's foreign ministry had said in a statement.

"This is an annexation plan aimed at killing a two-state solution and extorting the Palestinian territory."

Erdogan today added that Turkey may launch a military operation into Syria's northwestern province of Idlib if the situation in the region is not resolved immediately, as attacks by Russia-backed Syrian government forces raised concern of a new refugee wave to Turkey.

Speaking in Ankara, Erdogan said Turkey could not handle a fresh influx of migrants. On Wednesday, Erdogan had said Ankara was losing patience with the assault and accused Russia of violating agreements aimed at curbing conflict in the region.

Ehsaas Kafaalat: PM Imran launches welfare programme aimed at uplifting underprivileged women

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday said that Pakistan never saw the scale of progress it should have seen because the underprivileged "were left behind" to serve an elitist agenda.

"Neither did we provide them quality education, nor build good hospitals for them. We didn't care for their health or ensure the provision of food.

"No country that has only served its elite ever progressed," said the premier, while addressing the launch ceremony of the Ehsaas Kafaalat Programme for poor women, in Islamabad.

According to Radio Pakistan, under the programme, a stipend of Rs2,000 per month will be paid "to the most deserving and poorest women across the country through a digital payment system based on transparent mechanism".

The premier, while addressing the event, promised that the state will take responsibility of the underprivileged.

"Seven million women will receive the Kafaalat card which means seven million households will benefit," said the premier, adding that health cards had already been distributed to six million families, enabling each to seek treatment worth Rs720,000.

"So far, I believe, our government's greatest achievement is this," said the prime minister.

"The helplessness that people feel when they don't have the funds for their treatment, is the greatest cruelty in society," he continued.

"When illness befalls a member of an underprivileged family, the entire household is thrust below the line of poverty as their entire budget is spent trying to seek treatment," noted the premier.

During the event, the prime minister distributed cards to several women and expressed satisfaction with the way the programme's system had been developed so truly deserving women could benefit.

"Humanity demands that you help those less privileged than you," said the premier, adding: "However, when there is dishonesty in the use of the funds collected, then such programmes are never successful," said the premier.

"So for its success, it was important for such systems to develop which ensure that the money reaches those people who are truly deserving, who are barely able to feed their children," said the premier. He explained that the programme had experienced delays because of the focus on developing a transparent mechanism for the flow of funds.

The prime minister said that it was under this mechanism, 800,000 people had been weeded out which included government officers who had cars and were availing foreign tours.

"These women, to whom I just distributed the cards, are among the people whose money was being stolen," he said.

The premier then proceeded with giving out details of how the programme works and provided an outline of other schemes the government will soon be implementing.

Under the Kafaalat Programme, he said that women will all be facilitated with bank accounts "so the money isn't stolen". He said that the card can be used to buy groceries from utility stores as well.

The premier said that smartphones will also be distributed so the women have access to information.

He said that the next phase will see the distribution of cows and buffaloes, so women can not only provide their children nutritious milk but sell it for additional income.

"The biggest challenge to children's health in Pakistan right now is stunting and malnutrition. These two problems affect the development of children.

"So we will empower women, give them chicken and eggs and help them become self-sufficient."

The premier also spoke of scholarship programmes for children from lesser income households.

"All of this is so Pakistan can be made into the state it was meant to be. A welfare state. A state that takes responsibility for the ones left behind.

"When someone asks me what that one reason is due to which Pakistan — which was seeing such rapid progress at one point — was unable to reach the pinnacle of success, I say it is because no country can witness development if there is a small fraction that is well-off among a sea of poor people."

He said that progress can only be possible with the uplift of the poor sections of society, as he put forward the example of the state of Madina.

Speaking of the 'Hunarmand Naujawan' programme, he said 500,000 youth will be imparted skills training "so they are well-equipped to make a living themselves".

He gave the example of Namal University, where numerous children from underprivileged families come to acquire education and after their graduation, are instantly able to procure jobs.

He also spoke of a loan facility to youth for their start-ups. "The youth will give out their business plans and the banks will evaluate their ideas on merit and provide them loans."

At the end, the premier thanked Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Social Protection and Poverty Alleviation Sania Nishtar for making a "foolproof programme".

He said with the data being collected under her guidance, the foundation for a welfare state was being laid.

"This will be the Pakistan Quaid-e-Mohammad Ali JInnah and Allama Iqbal had envisioned."

Pakistan suspends flight operations to China amid coronavirus outbreak

Pakistan suspends flight operations to China amid coronavirus outbreak
Pakistan on Friday halted flights to and from China with immediate effect, a civil aviation official said, as the death toll from a virus outbreak spreading in China mounted and the World Health Organisation called it a global health emergency.

“We are suspending flights to China until Feb 2,” additional secretary of aviation Abdul Sattar Khokhar told Reuters by phone, adding the situation would be reviewed after that date. He declined to comment on the reason for the closure.

Some airlines, including British Airways, have suspended flights to China due to warnings of the coronavirus outbreak. Germany, Britain and other countries have issued warnings about travel to China.

Russia also sealed its remote far-eastern border with China as a precaution on Thursday. Some countries have banned entry for travellers from Wuhan, the central Chinese city where the virus first surfaced.

The Karachi Port Trust (KPT) will quarantine the Chinese and Southeast Asian ship personnel, its chairperson, Rear Admiral Jamil Akhtar, and as preventive measures are ramped up to tackle coronavirus from spreading into the metropolis.

Akhtar said the containers, especially those arriving from China and southeast Asia, would be thoroughly checked, and that special care would be taken to ensure that the staff on these ships remained limited to the port only.

The crew aboard these ships were previously allowed to leave the ports when they arrived in the country but the authorities have now revoked the permission amid the virus' outbreak, he said.

Almost 30 to 35 percent of Pakistan’s total trade is with China, amounting to nearly Rs20 billion. Thousands of containers aboard ships from China are brought in monthly into the country.

The Pakistani government is monitoring the situation in China and is in close contact with the relevant authorities in order ensure safety of Pakistani students in Wuhan amid a coronavirus outbreak that has killed 170 people, the Foreign Office said on Thursday.

Gen Bajwa, Zalmay Khalilzad discuss Afghan reconciliation process

US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad meets Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa
US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad on Friday held meetings with Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and expressed his gratitude for Pakistan's facilitation of the Afghan peace process.

According to a press release issued by the foreign office, Khalilzad — who arrived in Pakistan today from Qatar — met with Qureshi at the Foreign Office in Islamabad. During their exchange, the US envoy praised Pakistan's efforts for lasting peace in Afghanistan while briefing the foreign minister about the most recent talks with the Taliban.

"The finalisation of a peace treaty between the Taliban and the US will pave the way for inter-Afghan dialogue, which would not only benefit Afghanistan but the whole region," Qureshi was quoted as saying.

During the meeting, Qureshi assured the US envoy that Pakistan will continue to support efforts to bring peace in Afghanistan. Both sides agreed to carry on their respective efforts in this regard.

In a separate meeting with Gen Bajwa at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, Khalilzad discussed "matters of mutual interest including overall regional security situation and ongoing Afghanistan Reconciliation Process", a statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations said.

According to the statement, the US envoy "thanked Pakistan for facilitating the process towards the mutual objective of peace in the region".

Khalilzad's visit comes after an escalation in tensions between the Taliban and the Afghan forces and as another round of talks kicked off, with the US envoy holding several meetings with the Taliban’s chief negotiator Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar.

Sources aware of the developments that took place during the talks in Doha said the Taliban had agreed internally to halt attacks against US forces and “reduce” assaults against Afghan government interests, but clashes between the Taliban and Afghan forces have risen.

At least 29 members of the Afghan security forces have been killed in Taliban attacks that followed air and ground assaults by government forces on the group over the last weekend.

Afghan forces and the Taliban also clashed on Tuesday when security personnel tried to access the site of a crashed US military plane in central Afghanistan.

US forces were later able to access the site and recover the remains of two personnel and what is believed to be the flight data recorder.

Earlier, the Afghan defence ministry said on Sunday that government forces had killed 51 Taliban fighters in assaults last weekend.

Dr responsible for child’s death due to Polio

Dr responsible for child’s death due to Polio
Boat Basin Police registered a case pertaining to the death of a two-year-old girl , who allegedly passed away after being administered polio vaccine injections, against the suspected health workers on court orders on Sunday. The case was registered under Section 321 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which relates to causing the unintended death of a person.

The father of the deceased, head constable Zareen Muhammad, told The Express Tribune that a medical camp had been set up to vaccinate children in Shireen Jinnah Colony in July 2019.

“A female health worker came to our house and took my daughter Laiba to the camp with her without my wife’s consent,” he said. “My wife told her that the baby had fever but she did not listen.”

Muhammad claimed that the doctor present at the camp had directed the health workers to administer three injections to Laiba.

As she was given the vaccine, the child’s condition deteriorated and marks appeared on her legs. The girl was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors referred them to Indus Hospital after informing them that the infection has spread in her body.

After examining the child, the doctors at Indus Hospital told them that one of her legs had become infected and would have to be amputated. According to Muhammad, his daughter succumbed to the infection before the surgery could be performed.

Although he reported the death to the Boat Basin police, he said, they did not register the case, and neither did any senior officials take action.

The father added that he approached the relevant assistant commissioner, who took the statements of the health workers responsible and other relevant individuals.

In light of the statements, the assistant commissioner consulted with the relevant court, which ordered the registration of an FIR against the health workers.

deployment of 5G represents a huge challenge

deployment of 5G represents a huge challenge
Leading telecoms group chooses Nokia and Ericsson for 5G network

Orange, France’s biggest telecoms company, said it had chosen Nokia and Ericsson to deploy its 5G network in mainland France, as China’s Huawei Technologies faces intense political scrutiny in Europe.

“For Orange, the deployment of 5G represents a huge challenge and is one of the main priorities of our Engage 2025 strategic plan,” said Orange France CEO Fabienne Dulac.

“We are delighted to be pursuing our partnerships with both Nokia and Ericsson, two key long-term partners, in order to develop a powerful and innovative 5G network,” added Dulac.

Earlier this week, the European Union followed Britain’s example in allowing members to decide what part Huawei can play in its 5G telecoms networks and resisting pressure from Washington for an outright ban.

EU countries can either restrict or exclude high-risk 5G vendors such as Huawei from core parts of their telecoms networks, according to the new guidelines, which seek to address the cybersecurity risks to the bloc’s 28 countries at a national and EU level.

While previous cellular networks focused on mobile phones, 5G promotors say its greater transmission speed and total bandwidth will allow a ballooning number of objects such as traffic lights, crop equipment, refrigerators and other household appliances to send and receive data.

Google’s recruiter asked Amazon employees that were involved in activism at their company to come work at Google.

The irony of the whole situation was that Google is also in the middle of a crackdown on labor activism and they also work with oil companies just the way Amazon does.

Yahoo says all 3 billion accounts hacked in 2013 data theft

“Hey Amazonions! I recognise your courage and bravery to speak out about climate change.

I believe your passion can truly change the world,” wrote Jason Lin, a UX recruiter at Google.

“Check out some of the ways Google is actively working to battle climate change below! I’d love to connect with you and talk about how you could take advantage of our 20% time!”

The 20% time is being referred to the hours of the day that the search engine giants’ employees spend pursuing their own projects.

Your smartphone is listening to everything you are saying

Around 350 Amazon employees violated their employer’s communication policy after they were threatened to be fired by the company for speaking up for climate activism.

The recruiter’s generous offer to hire these employees is quite ironic considering Google has been firing their own activists.

According to Motherboard, the Google recruiter was not informed that their company employees were advocating the same climate change policy as demanded by Amazon workers.

With 2000 employees demanding that the search engine giant ends its association with oil and gas companies.

A spokesperson for search engine giant told Motherboard that it was unaware of the recruiter’s LinkedIn post and that the recruiter had been acting on his own and later the post had been removed.

Djokovic expresses 'huge respect' for Federer

Djokovic expresses 'huge respect' for Federer
Novak Djokovic paid "huge respect" to old rival Roger Federer Thursday after he swept past the ailing star and into a record eighth Australian Open final to move closer to his 17th Grand Slam crown.

In the 50th installment of one of sport's greatest rivalries, the Serb shrugged off a tentative start to reinforce his recent dominance, showing no mercy to the injury-hit Swiss maestro in a 7-6 (7/1), 6-4, 6-3 win.

He will play either fifth seed Dominic Thiem or seventh-ranked German Alexander Zverev in Sunday's final, but it will take a monumental effort to prise another title from the 32-year-old.

Of the seven Melbourne finals Djokovic has made, he has won them all.

If any extra motivation was needed, winning on Sunday will see the Serb reclaim the number one ranking after Thiem sent Rafael Nadal packing in the last eight.

"It's never easy to play Roger. I mean, obviously he was hurting. You could see it in his movement. Respect to him for trying his best," said defending champion Djokovic, who is into his 26th Grand Slam fin

"After losing the first set, he got a medical (timeout). He came back and played all the way through. It's unfortunate that he was not at his best."

It was the fourth time Djokovic had beaten Federer at the semi-final stage in Melbourne after doing the same in 2008, 2011 and 2016.

Federer, the 2018 champion, came into the match carrying a groin injury that he picked up in his five-set, come-from-behind quarter-final win against Tennys Sandgren.

He was seen around Melbourne Park before the match with tape on his upper right leg and there were even rumours that he might pull out.

But that is not in the 38-year-old's nature — he has only ever given up four walkovers in his long career and has never retired in more than 1,500 matches, facts that Djokovic said were "amazing" and deserved "huge respect".

Djokovic was the clear favourite after beating the third seed in every Grand Slam meeting since Wimbledon 2012, but in their 50th career clash it was Federer who initially set Rod Laver Arena alight.

The opening game, on Federer's serve, lasted six minutes in an indication of what might be in store.

Then against the odds the 38-year-old, the oldest man in a Grand Slam semi since Jimmy Connors in 1991, broke Djokovic on his first service game with an unbelievable backhand passing shot.

The edge didn't last long with the Serb immediately hitting back to even it up.

But the power and finesse of the Federer game was troubling Djokovic, who was on the back foot and was broken once more to go 4-1 behind.

Federer had three break points to make it 5-1, but Djokovic dug deep to fend them off as he clawed back, breaking once more as the Swiss was serving for the set.

It went to a tiebreaker which the second seed dominated to pull off a remarkable turnaround in a set that Federer threw away.

Federer took a medical timeout at the end of it and he wasn't moving freely in the second set.

But he clung on until he fluffed an easy shot at the net to hand Djokovic set point at 4-5 and the Serb cracked a top-quality crosscourt volley to go two sets to one in front.

Djokovic was pumped and Federer rapidly running out of steam.

When the Swiss star was broken to go 4-2 behind in the third, there was no way back as his rival extended his winning record over him to 27-23.

UK will leave European Union today after 47 years of membership

UK will leave European Union today
The United Kingdom will leave the European Union today, after 47 years of membership.

The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced to hail Brexit day today, as the dawn of a new era and will make pledge to unite Britain in an address to the nation.

Brexit was originally scheduled for 31st of March last year, but was repeatedly delayed when Members of Parliament rejected a previous withdrawal agreement reached by the EU and former Prime Minister Theresa May.

The UK formally leaves the EU. Prime Minister Boris Johnson will address the nation in what can be presumed to be an optimistic message. Other Brexiteers will be celebrating in grander style, as parties are being held across the country — including one opposite the Houses of Parliament, the body that thwarted Brexit so many times in 2019.
Remain voters will be holding similar protest events all over Britain.

The Union flag will be removed from all EU institutions (one of which will be placed in a museum in Brussels) and senior EU politicians will probably make statements expressing that this is a sad day for Europe and that they want to remain the closest of friends with Europe.

WHO declares public health emergency of corona virus of int'l concern
UN health agency on Thursday declared an international emergency over the deadly coronavirus from China a rarely used designation that could lead to improved international co-ordination in tackling the disease.

“Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems…. This is not a vote of no confidence in China,” World Health Organization (WHO) chief WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a briefing in Geneva.

China reported its biggest single-day jump in novel coronavirus deaths on Thursday, as global fears deepened with more infections confirmed overseas including three Japanese evacuated from the outbreak’s epicentre.

The World Health Organization, which initially downplayed a disease that has now killed 170 in China, was readying to meet Thursday to decide whether to declare it a global emergency.

Many countries have urged their citizens not to visit China, while some have banned entry for travellers from Wuhan.

At least 15 countries have confirmed infections.
