Shahid Afridi reveals his actual age after much controversy

Shahid Afridi
Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi on Saturday furnished an explanation with regard to his age written in his autobiography 'Game Changer'.

Addressing the launching ceremony of his book, the former all-rounder said he wanted to share the journey of his life with his fans, who stood by him during every difficult time.

Commenting with regard to controversy surrounding his age, he said he was born in 1977, however, the book mistakenly mentions the year of his birth to be 1975.

Afridi said the e-copy of the book mentions the correct year of his birth though.

He said he decided to write the book for his fans after his career ended in 2015. "The purpose was to tell the correct age to my fans, whether my record is taken away," the former all-rounder said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Afridi's year of birth is officially documented as 1980.

He further said he respects all the seniors and if he said any negative thing about someone, then he would also have mentioned positive facts about the same person.

"I have not had any personal issue with Waqar Younis. Differences occur among brothers as well," Afridi said.

Reza Baqir appointed SBP Governor, Ahmed Mujtaba Memon to head FBR

Dr Reza Baqir and Ahmed Mujtaba Memon
The federal government on Saturday appointed Dr Reza Baqir – a Pakistani economist working for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) – as the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, as Islamabad seeks to finalise a bailout package from the global lender.

"The President of Pakistan is pleased to appoint Dr Reza Baqir as Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) for a period of three years from the date he assumes office," read a notification from the government issued late Saturday night.

A Harvard and Berkeley University of California alumnus, Dr Baqir has been with the IMF since 2000 and is presently the Fund's senior resident representative in Egypt. He has previously served as the head of the IMF Mission for Romania, and as Head of the Fund's Debt Policy Division.

Baqir's appointment comes a day after Tariq Bajwa resigned from the post of SBP governor.

Ahmed Mujtaba Memon appointed FBR chairman

Meanwhile, the government appointed Ahmed Mujtaba Memon on the post of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman, which also fell vacant on Friday after the removal of Jahanzeb Khan, the chairman of the tax collection body.

Memon comes from the Pakistan Customs Service and is presently an additional secretary in the Finance Division. A notification for Memon's appointment is likely to be issued shortly.

The key appointments come only weeks after Finance Minister Asad Umar was asked to step down amid vital bailout negotiations with the IMF, suggesting the government wants to overhaul its financial team amid weakening growth rates and soaring inflation.

Last month, Prime Minister Imran Khan appointed Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh as Adviser on Finance in place of Umar, as inflation rose to its highest in six years.

The IMF is pushing Pakistan to embrace a more flexible rupee policy to end repeated boom-and-bust cycles, with many analysts arguing that the local currency is overvalued. The government has also been frustrated by the low tax collection rates during its first year in office, with the disappointing figures threatening the prime minister's promises to build a welfare state for the poor.

The central bank in March cut its economic growth estimates, forecasting the economy would expand 3.5 to 4 percent in the 12 months to the end of June, well short of a government target of 6.2 percent. The IMF paints a gloomier picture, predicting growth of 2.9 percent in 2019 and 2.8 percent next year.

Pakistan’s consumer price inflation in March rose to its highest since November 2013, hitting 9.41 percent year-on-year, before easing to 8.82 percent in April.

Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn crowned

Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn crowned
Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn was crowned Saturday with a golden-tiered headpiece, the highlight of an elaborate three-day coronation ceremony two years after he ascended the throne.

The 66-year-old monarch, known as Rama X and dressed in a bejewelled golden robe, was handed the 7.3-kilogram Crown of Victory, which he placed on his head before issuing his first royal command.

Rama X is widely seen as an adroit player of Thailand's treacherous politics, intervening several times -- including in the March 24 election -- during his short reign.

Those elections are yet to yield a new government, with the kingdom split between pro and anti-junta blocs, the latter crying foul over the vote count so far.

Full results are due to be announced next week with the ruling junta tipped to return as civilian government.

"The coronation distracts from the popular indignation regarding election irregularities," said Thai politics expert Paul Chambers of Naresuan University.

The Thai monarchy takes primacy in the country's power pyramid, but it is buttressed by the army.

Junta leaders past and present were prominent in Saturday's ceremonies.

Earlier, the king arrived at the Grand Palace in a cream Rolls-Royce, his hand raised in a wave but his face characteristically inscrutable.

He was accompanied by his smiling new wife -- Queen Suthida -- a former flight attendant turned royal bodyguard.

Their marriage was unexpectedly announced on Wednesday.

On Friday, the king warmly greeted family members in an intimate gathering broadcast on Thai television, including his 14-year-old son from his third marriage -- Prince Dipangkorn -- and his elder sister Ubolratana.

She stunned Thailand in February when her name was forwarded as a candidate for premier by an anti-junta party -- a move swiftly shot down by her brother in a rare royal command.

Harsh lese-majeste laws mean unguarded discussion about the monarchy inside Thailand is virtually impossible.

Thailand's normally hyperactive social media has been subdued in the days leading up to the coronation.

Born on July 28, 1952, the British-schooled Vajiralongkorn is known for his love of cycling and piloting jets, but he spends much of his time overseas -- mainly in Germany -- and remains something of a mystery to many Thais.

'Surprise package' — Pakistan's 150kph teen with World Cup in his sights

Fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain
Four years ago, two-time World Cup winner Steve Waugh predicted young fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain would one day make a name for himself on the international stage.

Now the 19-year-old can prove Waugh right after his blistering pace earned him a call-up to Pakistan's squad for the World Cup.

Pakistan's chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, a member of the country's first and only victorious World Cup squad in 1992, called the young bowler a "surprise package", while legendary paceman Waqar Younis says he sees shades of himself in the ultra-quick, destructive teen.

Tall and with a wide smile, Hasnain has turned heads after first arriving on the national scene in 2015 and sending down balls at a blistering 150kph (93 mph).

Hasnain's rise to Pakistan's senior squad has been similarly rapid — he made his one-day international debut within a week of leading the Quetta Gladiators to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) title.

"It's a great honour to represent Pakistan and the honour multiplied when I was named in the World Cup squad," Hasnain told AFP.

"I am on cloud nine and ready to make batsmen struggle with my speed. I love to bowl fast and that is my strong point."

Hasnain made his way to the international stage from the dusty pitches of sun-bleached Hyderabad in southern Pakistan, where he was mentored by renowned cricketing coach Iqbal Imam.

"Hasnain played Under-16 and Under-19 for Hyderabad and right from the start his pace has been impressive," recalled Imam, a former first-class cricketer who had played alongside Inzamam.

In 2015, he was selected in Pakistan's Under-15 team to tour Australia.

"I remember that at the Bradman ground near Sydney, Steve Waugh came to watch his son Austin and he saw Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasnain in action. He predicted that the two boys will make an impact at the international level," said former coach Mohammad Masroor.

Shaheen played for Pakistan in all three formats last year and is also in the World Cup squad, meaning both players can now seize their opportunity at the tournament in England and Wales.

He could also feature in Sunday's one-off T20 clash against England in Cardiff.

'Shivers down your spine'

Soon after his 12 wickets in the PSL's fourth edition, Hasnain was picked to play for Pakistan against Australia in a one-day series in the United Arab Emirates.

Although he took just two wickets in three games, Australian batsmen were troubled by his pace — a trait Pakistan's head coach Mickey Arthur said could be a game-changer for his squad.

"His pace is the most impressive and he has the potential of an international player," said Arthur.

"He could be the X-factor for us."

Former great Waqar also lauded Hasnain's pace, as well as his grit.

"He is very talented, has pace and bounce and the determination," said Waqar.

"I have told him not to lose his pace, which is his strong point. I wish him the best of luck."

Inzamam says Hasnain has the potential to keep the competition off-balance and the ability to surprise any team.

"I think he could be the surprise package and can at any time win us a match. He has express pace and can damage and can surprise any team," said Inzamam.

"I have faced 150kph in my career and it's not easy. It sends shivers down your spine."

Hasnain will first get his chance to shine in the five-match one-day international series against England — starting on May 8 — ahead of the World Cup.

"I didn't know much about Steve Waugh when we met," he said.

"But later I got to know that he was a World Cup winner, a great batsman and a shrewd captain.

"His words were inspiring and I want to prove him right. I know the England series is a big chance for me and then the World Cup. I will do my best to make a name for myself.

"I will, definitely," he added.

Prices before Ramazan is an injustice to the public: Shehbaz Sharif

Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif criticised the proposed price hike by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on Saturday.

According to details the PML-N leader said, the Rs9 increase in the price of petrol is inhuman and that increasing the prices before the month of Ramazan is an injustice to the public.

“The government has shown its incompetence and placed the burden of it on the public. Those who keep speaking about the State of Median did not even consider about the month of Ramazan,” Shehbaz said.

Shehbaz further said, “Because of this incompetent government, the running of the household of the poor, businesses and the governance of the country has come to a halt. This is a failed attempt by the government to cover up the Rs450 billion deficit.’

The Economic Coordination Committee of the federal cabinet on Friday approved an increase Rs9 per litre in the price of petrol after the prime minister asked it to revise a proposal by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to raise petrol prices by over 14 per cent.

The prices of petrol and diesel are already at their highest level since the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government came into power after the party won general elections in July 2018.

Last month, the government increased the per litre price of petrol and high-speed diesel by Rs6 to Rs98.89 and Rs117.43 respectively, and of light speed diesel and kerosene oil by Rs3 to Rs80.54 and Rs89.31 per litre respectively.+

Curtail inflation all departments would need to work together: Razzak Dawood

Adviser to prime minister on commerce, Abdul Razzak Dawood
Adviser to prime minister on commerce, Abdul Razzak Dawood said on Saturday that inflation was taking place globally not just in Pakistan.

Addressing a ceremony in Lahore, Dawood stressed that in order to curtail inflation all departments would need to work together.

Dawood added that steps were being taken to bring Pakistan’s economy on the right path and the government was taking decisions which would bring results.

The prime minister’s adviser further said that government institutions operating in a loss would need to become profitable, warning of privatization if they failed to do so.

According to Dawood, the government would not take any steps which would not be beneficial to people. “Imran Khan’s vision is to provide relief to people but this will take time.”

Dawood added that in the last five years industries closed in Pakistan and exports fell, however, former finance minister Ishaq Dar failed to take notice. He said past governments had concealed facts from people.

“We do not want to be included in the list of importing nations and have to take care of our industries,” Dawood said.

Dawood informed that tractors were now being built in Pakistan and exported to African countries.

Earlier this week, the Bureau of Statistics said Pakistan’s consumer price inflation eased in April to 8.82 per cent on an annual basis from 9.41 per cent in March.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Saturday cited examples from Muslim countries to defend his party’s demand for a ban on underage marriages.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari tweeted that: “UAE marriage age is 18, Indonesia is 18 & Turkey is also 18. Are they not Muslim countries,” he questioned in a tweet.

“In Sindh where marriage age is 18, we saw how law stopped an adult marrying a 10 year old,” the PPP chairman said in a reference to the 40-year-old man’s bid to marry a 10-year-old girl in Shikarpur.

Petrol price jacked up by Rs. 9; to be sold at Rs. 108 per litre

Petrol price jacked up by Rs. 9; to be sold at Rs. 108 per litre
The Economic Coordination Committee of the federal cabinet has approved an increase Rs9 per litre in the price of petrol after the prime minister asked it to revise a proposal by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) to raise petrol prices by over 14 percent.

In its summary sent to the finance ministry earlier this week, OGRA had recommended an increase of Rs14.37 in the per litre price of petrol. OGRA also recommended an increase of Rs4.89 per litre in the price of high-speed diesel. Sources said the body had recommended a price hike of Rs7.46 per litre in kerosene oil and Rs6.40 per litre in light diesel oil prices.

However, in a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, the government had decided to delay the decision and refer the matter to the ECC. According to reports, the prime minister had disagreed with the OGRA proposal to raise POL prices, urging that the burden of increase in international prices of oil not be transferred to the public.

In its meeting today, the ECC approved a Rs9 per litre increase in the price of petrol, and a Rs5 per litre in the price of diesel. The increase, if approved by the prime minister, would take the per litre price of petrol to Rs108.

The prices of petrol and diesel are already at their highest level since the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government came into power after the party won general elections in July 2018.

Last month, the government increased the per litre price of petrol and high-speed diesel by Rs6 to Rs98.89 and Rs117.43 respectively, and of light speed diesel and kerosene oil by Rs3 to Rs80.54 and Rs89.31 per litre respectively.

Prime Minister Imran Khan dismissed on Friday news regarding imminent imposition of presidential system in the country, saying that no thought has been put into any such idea.

Technology will bring about demise of humanity

show features 3D printed sculptures made out of resin of tech
The Beginning of the End" is Chilean born artist Sebastian ErraZuriz’s commentary on the impending demise of humanity due to technology.

"The exhibit is definitely pessimistic," he said. "And I don’t know if it’s 10 years or it’s 20. It doesn’t really matter. The fact is, automatization and artificial intelligence will take enormous numbers of jobs and will reduce them much quicker than people think. I mean all it takes is a 15% unemployment. It’s not that big. So to think that we’re not going to get there is being incredibly naive. There’s enormous amounts of different categories of industries that are about to have enormous setbacks due to loss of jobs."

His show features 3D printed sculptures made out of resin of tech moguls Jeff Bezos, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg immortalized into Greco-Roman statues.

A depiction of Jobs is the first of the sculptures, representing "The Prophet," reminiscent of Rodin’s The Thinker. With the iPhone, customers have a ready stream of information at their fingertips, but it also takes data that machine learning needs in order to be able to develop into artificial intelligence, said ErraZuriz.
The collection took five years to make, with ErraZuriz taking images of preexisting famous artworks and "sculpting" the tech magnates onto its base, in digital software.

"By moving the mouse pad, we’re moving digital frameworks so that we can sculpt in the same manner as you would be physically sculpting with a chisel," he said. "But here we’re doing the equivalent in software. And then finally when that result is finished, we can choose to either 3D print, or we could choose to generate an augmented reality version. In this case, the pieces are 3D printed in many different sections that then get bonded together into a single piece."

Provincial finance ministers called to meet IMF team in Islamabad

IMF team & Ministry of Finance meeting in Islamabad
The Ministry of Finance has asked all the provincial governments to send their finance ministers to Islamabad for a face to face meeting with the IMF team on Saturday.

An agenda for the talks has not been declared, but the authorities in Sindh say the talks come after reports emerged in the press that the government is considering an integrated sales tax regime across the country.

The sales tax has been bifurcated between goods and services since the NFC award of 2009, with the services part largely devolved to the provinces. Authorities at the centre have long felt that the bifurcation has resulted in a large revenue loss for the federal government.

Press secretary to chief minister Sindh Rashid Channa confirmed to Dawn that CM Murad Ali Shah, who also holds the portfolio of provincial finance minister, as well as the secretary finance and chairman Sindh Revenue Board, will be travelling to Islamabad for the meeting “to discuss their reservations and share their opinions directly with the fund team.” The CM Sindh wrote a letter to the finance minister objecting to the reported proposal of integrating the sales tax.

“There is no question of returning the sales tax on services back to the centre,” Channa tells Dawn when asked whether the team might be willing to consider a compromise with the federal finance authorities. “We have a Rs40 billion bill only on salaries and if we were to do this we would not be able to meet our own expenditures.”

Finance Minister of Punjab Hashim Jawan Bakht took a less categorical view of the forthcoming meeting with the fund. “The meeting is to discuss the various revenue bases of the provincial government and what we will be doing to optimise revenue collection in the next year.

He had called a preparatory meeting on Friday for excise, board of revenue and irrigation departments as well as the Punjab Revenue Authority that collects sales tax on services for the provincial government, but cancelled the meeting on Thursday night since he was summoned to Islamabad for a meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan,

When asked his view on reverting to an integrated model for sales tax collection, he said thus far there are only press reports suggesting that such a model is under consideration and no discussions have taken place on any official forum along these lines. However, he added there is a need for “harmonisation of the tax regimes for ease of doing business” and underlined that “this can be done without all these taxes clubbed under one source.”

The sales tax on services is the single largest revenue head for all provincial governments. The provincial governments of Sindh and Punjab have raised the majority of their own revenues under this head over the past decade. In FY2019, for example, both provincial governments report they have collected around Rs70bn under this head in the period from July to March. Punjab has budgeted to collect Rs375bn in own revenue this year, whereas Sindh is aiming for a target of Rs243bn in own revenues this year.

SC rejects Nawaz Sharif’s petition seeking bail extension

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday rejected a petition by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif for an extension in the bail granted to him on medical grounds.

According to details a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa heard the petition, which the former premier had filed as he sought an extension in the bail until a decision on the review petition.

Nawaz had been granted bail on medical grounds by the apex court on March 26 for six weeks. On April 25, he had submitted a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking a permanent bail.

His bail is set to expire on May 7.

As today's hearing went under way, Chief Justice Khosa remarked that the bench "will not talk about anything concerning the future".

"Doctors can comment better on his illness," the top judge observed, adding, "This was part of the package that you can request for a bail extension after six weeks."

"We will have to see whether we review our order or not," he added.

Nawaz, thrice the prime minister of Pakistan, had been in jail since December 2018 following his conviction in Al Azizia corruption reference in line with the Supreme Court’s July 2017 verdict. An accountability court on December 24 had found the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader guilty in the Al Azizia Steel Mills reference and sentenced him to seven years in prison.
