Four cops have been arrested in Peshawar for killing a Levies personnel

kp police
In yet another case of police opening indiscriminate fire on a vehicle, four cops have been arrested in Peshawar for killing a Levies personnel during the incident in the provincial capital of the KP province.

According to details, the incident occurred on January 03 when they opened fire on a vehicle in Badh Bir area of Peshawar for neglecting the police signal.

The cops opened fire on the vehicle, seriously wounding Levies personnel, identified as Riaz. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

It is pertinent to mention here that incidents of police opening fire on vehicles have occurred frequently in the country, raising questions over the training of the personnel to deal with such situations.

In a similar case in the federal capital on January 02, five Counter-Terrorism Force (CTF) officials were arrested for opening fire on a vehicle, leaving a youth dead in Islamabad.

The firing incident was reported in Islamabad’s G-10 where the security officials shot multiple fires on a ‘suspicious’ vehicle after allegedly trying to stop the driver many times.

Police told media that the officials followed a suspicious ‘vehicle with tinted glasses and tried to stop it many times’.

They claimed that the department received a complaint on Friday night for a robbery bid in Shams Colony by some dacoits in a car. The vehicle was followed by CTF officials who were on patrolling duty in the area, police added.

However, after many failed attempts to stop the car, the personnel shot fires on the tyre but unfortunately, the driver received two bullets to his body which later led to his death.

On the other hand, the victim’s father claimed that 16 to 17 bullet marks are present on the car’s body but not a single bullet was shot on the tyres.

PM Imran Khan announces special security group for Hazara community

PM Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan blamed India for being behind the terrorist acts in Balochistan and vowed that stringent security measures would be taken for safeguarding the Hazara community.

Speaking to digital media representatives, Imran Khan expressed regret over the brutal killing of the members of the Hazara community and said that they were facing genocide.

“Some terror elements have joined hands with Daesh and they are supported by India for promoting terrorism in Balochistan,” he said adding that the cabinet was apprised of attempts being made to fuel sectarian rifts in the country in March.

He said that India has made attempts to fuel sectarian tensions in the country and Maulana Adil’s assassination was one such bid to fuel the rifts, however, it was tackled in the best possible way by the security institutions.

“Our forces have foiled many attempts from terrorists and arrested several such elements before the execution of their nefarious designs,” Imran Khan said.

He said that the Balochistan province was neglected in the past due to its less population and votes, however, their government is giving special attention towards the development of the province.

“The chieftain system in the province has also a role in the destruction of Balochistan,” the prime minister said while also blaming the PPP for neglecting it during its tenure.

“The development funds were previously funneled through chieftains of the province, which made them richer while the masses remained poor,” Imran Khan said.

He further lauded Jam Kamal and said that he was performing well for the betterment of the province.

Prime Minister Imran Khan later speaking to the heirs of the victims in a separate meeting said that they were establishing a security group tasked with providing security to the Hazara victims.

“I have met Hazara families after attacks on them previously when I was not the prime minister,” he said adding that he decided to visit after the burial of the victims as a prior visit could set a bad precedent for his successors.

“I am thankful to the families of the victims for burying the coal miners on my request,” he said adding that he remained in touch with the security institutions, reviewing the situation.

Trump says he will look at creating his own platform after Twitter ban

Trump says he will look at creating his own platform after Twitter ban
U.S. President Donald Trump said he will look at building his own platform after Twitter suspended him on Friday, citing a risk of further incitement of violence following the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday by hundreds of his supporters.

Trump sent the latest tweets on his @POTUS account after Twitter banned his personal account.

Twitter Inc said on Friday that it has permanently suspended U.S. President Donald Trump’s account due to the risk of further incitement of violence following the storming of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday.

The suspension of Trump’s account, which had more than 88 million followers, silences his primary megaphone days before the end of his term and follows years of debate about how social media companies should moderate the accounts of powerful global leaders.

“After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,” the company said in a tweet.

It was the first time Twitter has banned a head of state, the company confirmed.

Social media companies have moved swiftly to crack down on Trump and some of his prominent right-wing allies and supporters in the wake of the turmoil in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, which led to five deaths.

Trump has repeatedly used Twitter and other platforms to claim his defeat in the Nov. 3 election was due to widespread voter fraud and to share other conspiracy theories, and had urged supporters to come to Washington on Wednesday and march on the Capitol to protest the election result.

Facebook Inc said earlier this week it was suspending his account through until at least the end of his presidential term.

The Republican president is due to hand over to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden on Jan. 20.

In a blog post on Friday, Twitter said that two of the president’s tweets posted that day were in violation of its policy against the glorification of violence.

Twitter had temporarily blocked Trump’s account on Wednesday following the siege of Capitol Hill, and warned that additional violations by the president’s accounts would result in a permanent suspension.

Trump was required to delete three rule-breaking tweets before his account was unblocked. He returned to Twitter on Thursday with a video acknowledging that Biden would be the next U.S. president.

Twitter said that Trump’s tweet that he would not be attending Biden’s inauguration was being received by a number of his supporters as confirmation that the November election was not legitimate.

It said another tweet praising “American Patriots” and saying his supporters “will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!” could be seen as “further indication that President Trump does not plan to facilitate an orderly transition.”

Critics of major social media platforms, including top Democratic politicians, praised Twitter’s move and said it was long overdue, while Trump suppporters expressed outrage.

The president’s son, Donald Trump Jr., in a tweet on Friday decried the ban, saying dictators who had threatened genocide continued to have Twitter accounts. He did not provide names.

The White House had no immediate direct comment. The Trump campaign’s Twitter account criticized the company for “silencing” the president of the United States.

Using the @POTUS account, Trump said he would look at building his own platform.

Malaysia PM to announce new COVID-19 measures as deaths hit daily record

Malaysia PM to announce new COVID-19 measures as deaths hit daily record
Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will announce new measures next week to curb a surge in coronavirus cases, a senior minister said on Friday, as the country reported its highest daily number of deaths linked to the epidemic.

The Southeast Asian nation has seen a spike in infections since September, with the number of daily reported cases climbing to record highs on two days this week.

Friday’s death toll of 16 took total COVID-19 fatalities to 537. The health ministry also reported 2,643 new infections, raising the total number of cases to 131,108.

The government has said it was considering imposing targeted lockdowns in some areas, though businesses warned that wider restrictions could further batter the economy.

Muhyiddin will announce new measures to tackle the virus surge on Monday, security minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob told reporters.

“We are refining and looking at the new measures in detail to ensure that they work for everyone,” he said during a televised news conference.

Separately, science minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the country’s pharmaceutical regulator has issued a conditional approval for the vaccine manufactured by U.S. and German drugmakers Pfizer and BioNTech to be used in Malaysia.

“We are still waiting for a few additional info from Pfizer but this means it can be used in Malaysia,” Khairy posted on his Twitter account.

Malaysia, which has purchased 12.8 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech shot, is expected to receive its first shipment of the vaccine next month.

South Korea unveils inflatable isolation ward for COVID-19 patients

South Korea unveils inflatable isolation ward for COVID-19 patients
South Korean researchers say they have designed an inflatable “negative pressure” ward for isolating and treating patients with infectious diseases like COVID-19, after the pandemic exposed shortages of such beds around the world.

The rooms use a ventilation system that creates negative pressure to allow air to flow into the isolation room and be channelled out safely, helping prevent the spread of airborne pathogens.

They have become a vital tool for fighting the coronavirus pandemic, but many countries have struggled to create them quickly enough.

The mobile clinic modules designed by a research team at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) are large greenhouse-like inflatable tents, which the institute said cost a fifth of the price of building a conventional hospital ward.

Nam Tek-jin, an industrial design professor who led the KAIST team, says their tents, which are the size of a basketball court, can be installed and equipped in less than a day.

“At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, facilities for mild patients were not big a problem, but we noticed that space for seriously ill patients was urgently in need as their condition would suddenly deteriorate,” Nam told Reuters.

“We thought of developing a facility for not just isolation, but also treatment.”

The frames, panels, and lighting can be assembled on the spot to form a negative pressure room with a separate entry space and a shower pod in just 15 minutes, and it takes less than 24 hours to set up the entire air tent with four such rooms, he said.

The rooms are also equipped with panels that allow medical workers to provide aid or pass things like food without having to enter the room and avoiding burn out from wearing cumbersome gear, said Cho Min-su, a director at the Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences.

Nam said the units are ready for mass production, but no customers have been announced yet.

Carmaker launches cheaper variant of popular SUV

Carmaker launches cheaper variant of popular SUV
Tesla launched a cheaper variant of the Model Y, bringing its sports utility vehicle’s price closer to that of its Model 3 sedan, the electric-car maker’s least expensive car.

The new standard range Model Y is priced at $41,990, only $4,000 more than the entry level Model 3, according to the company’s website.

Shares of the carmaker, which have surged more than 700% in 2020, were up nearly 5% at $853.89 in trading before the bell on Friday.

Tesla’s stratospheric rally has helped Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk surpass Amazon.com Inc’s top boss Jeff Bezos to become the world’s richest man, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

Shares in the company jumped nearly 8% to end Thursday’s session at $816.04, putting its market capitalization at $774 billion and making it Wall Street’s fifth-most-valuable company, just behind Google-parent Alphabet Inc and ahead of social media giant Facebook.

Tesla’s new Model Y variants come days after the carmaker beat Wall Street targets for 2020 vehicle deliveries, driven by a steady rise in electric vehicle adoption, but narrowly missed its ambitious full-year target of half a million deliveries.

Elon Musk overtakes Amazon’s Bezos to become world’s richest person

Elon Musk
Tesla Inc chief and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk surpassed Amazon.com Inc’s top boss Jeff Bezos to become the world’s richest man, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.

Including Thursday’s gains in Tesla shares, Musk had a net worth of more than $188.5 billion, $1.5 billion more than Bezos, according to the report.

Musk’s personal wealth has been boosted by last year’s more than eight-fold surge in the shares of Tesla, which became the world’s most valuable carmaker.

He has a 20% stake in the carmaker and about $42 billion of unrealized paper gains on vested stock options, according to the Bloomberg report.

Tesla shares were up as much as 7.4% on Thursday at a record high of $811.61.

The Forbes Billionaires List, however, said Musk still trails Amazon’s Bezos by $7.8 billion.

Forbes has a more conservative estimate based on the Tesla stake that he has pledged as a collateral for personal loans. To take that into account, it applies a 25% discount to his shareholding, according to its report in November.

Musk, who co-founded and sold Internet payments company PayPal Holdings Inc, now leads some of the most futuristic companies in the world.

Besides Tesla, he heads rocket company SpaceX and Neuralink, a startup that is developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-machine interfaces to connect the human brain to computers.

He set up the Boring Company to make affordable tunnels below busy city streets for an all-electric public transportation system to avoid the nasty traffic jams in U.S. cities.

Shibli Faraz responds to criticism over PM's use of word 'blackmail'

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz on Friday responded to criticism by the Opposition over the use of the word "blackmail" by Prime Minister Imran Khan as he spoke about the sit-in in Quetta by the Hazara community.

The community has been protesting since Sunday, after 10 miners were massacred by terrorists near a coal field in Balochistan's Machh town, and have refused to bury their loved ones until the prime minister goes to meet them.

The prime minister, during a ceremony today to launch Special Technology Zones Authority in Islamabad, had said: "One does not blackmail the prime minister of any country this way."

His remarks stirred up a storm, with the Opposition criticising the premier for likening just demands to "blackmail" and for lacking humanity.

Faraz, in his rebuttal to the Opposition said: "The people who see a tragedy like this one as an opportunity for political point scoring are the ones who do not have any humanity left in them."

He said the prime minister used the word "blackmail" for those very people who "politicise every matter".

He said that the prime minister shares in the sorrow of the affected families and considers it his top-most priority to provide them justice.

Misbah welcomes criticism after difficult NZ tour

Head coach of Pakistan Misbah-ul-Haq
Head coach of Pakistan Misbah-ul-Haq while welcoming the criticism over his team in the backdrop of losing all two Test matches to New Zealand by big margins, terms it is because the nation has the expectations from the team due to its potential.

In a podcast released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) here on Thursday, Misbah said: “Whosoever is criticising the team is very right and it is because the team has the potential to do better and it also showed the potential in phases.”

“If you went down while not living up to your potential you have to face the criticism. Yes we played below our potential and we have to improve our performances to come out of this scenario,” Misbah said.

“Whatever sport you play, its ultimate objective is victory and when you fail to win, it causes disappointment. On this tour, we received opportunities but wasted them. We dropped catches and that impacted our overall performance.

To put it in simple words, we could not do what we can do. We could bring the matches close to the winning stages as we did in the first Test. We stretched that Test till the very end and it was a matter of just five remaining overs from earning a respectable draw.

“We have to work on our catching and as our next series is at home against South Africa, it is a good chance for us to review the overall situation to improve and increase the confidence of the players to win the series,” Misbah said.

“The home conditions will be helpful for us to give better performances, but for that to happen, we have to overcome all the loopholes,” he said.

Misbah said the best performers of the recently concluded Quaid-e-Azam Trophy would also be considered for the series against South Africa.

Democrats inch towards second Trump impeachment after US Capitol siege

US President Donald Trump
Congressional Democrats were moving closer to a historic step on Friday as they weighed impeaching US President Donald Trump for a second time, two days after his false claims of election fraud helped encourage a mob that breached the US Capitol.

Top Democratic leaders, including House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, called for immediate impeachment proceedings if Vice President Mike Pence and Trump's cabinet refused to take steps to remove Trump from power.

“The president's dangerous and seditious acts necessitate his immediate removal from office,” they said in a statement on Thursday evening, accusing Trump of inciting an “insurrection”.

As calls for his ouster mounted on Thursday, Trump released a video in which he denounced the violence that saw one person shot dead by police and three die from medical emergencies.

The Republican president came the closest yet to conceding his loss in the Nov 3 presidential election, promising to ensure a smooth transition to a “new administration”.

President-elect Joe Biden, a Democrat, is set to be sworn in on Jan 20.

Trump's words were in stark contrast to his speech on Wednesday, when he exhorted a crowd of thousands to descend upon the Capitol as Congress met to certify Biden's election victory.

Rioters stormed the building, overwhelming police and forcing authorities to transport lawmakers to secure locations for their own safety. A Capitol police officer died from injuries sustained in the assault, the force said late on Thursday, bringing to five the number of related deaths.

With less than two weeks left in Trump's term, it was not clear whether enough time remained to complete the impeachment process.

Pelosi has not announced a decision, though she made clear at a news conference that rank-and-file Democrats in her caucus were clamouring for action in the wake of Wednesday's siege.

If impeached in the House, Trump would theoretically face trial in the Republican-controlled Senate, which is scheduled to be in recess until Jan 19. Aides to Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, have not said what he would do if the House approves articles of impeachment.

The Democratic-led House impeached Trump in December 2019 for pressuring the president of Ukraine to investigate Biden, but the Republican-held Senate acquitted him in February 2020.

Only two other presidents in history have been impeached, and none has ever been impeached twice.

Democrats will control the Senate after sweeping two runoff elections in Georgia on Tuesday, but the new senators, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, will not be sworn in until the state certifies the results. The state deadline to do so is Jan 22, though it could come sooner.

In Thursday's video, a flat-toned Trump struck a conciliatory note seldom seen from the mercurial president, calling for “healing”.

As recently as Thursday morning, however, Trump was still claiming the election had been stolen, and he stopped short of acknowledging his loss.

Since November, Trump has baselessly railed against the election results as “rigged” due to widespread fraud.

The Trump campaign and its allies filed dozens of lawsuits challenging the vote counts but were almost universally rebuffed in state and federal courts. Election officials have said there is no evidence to back Trump's claims.

Pelosi and Schumer called on Pence and Trump's cabinet to invoke the US constitution's 25th amendment, which allows them to strip the president of his powers if he cannot discharge the duties of his office. But Pence opposes the idea, according to an adviser.

At least two Republicans, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan and US Representative Adam Kinzinger, said Trump must go. The Wall Street Journal editorial page, seen as a leading voice of the Republican establishment, on Thursday evening called on Trump to resign.

Several high-ranking Trump administration officials resigned in protest over the invasion of the Capitol, including two cabinet members: Elaine Chao, the transportation secretary and McConnell's wife, and Betsy DeVos, the education secretary.

At a news conference to introduce his pick for attorney general, Biden blamed Trump for instigating the attack but did not comment on his possible removal.

Congress certified Biden's election victory early on Thursday, after authorities cleared the Capitol. More than half of House Republicans and eight Republican senators voted to challenge some states' election results, backing Trump.

The president has isolated himself among a small circle of diehard advisers and lashed out at those he perceives as disloyal, including Pence — whom Trump wanted to try to block Congress from certifying Biden's win — according to sources.

Maryam criticises PM Imran for calling protesting Hazaras 'blackmailers'

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz
PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Friday once again hit out at Prime Minister Imran Khan for not having visited the Shia Hazaras protesting the killing of coal miners in the Mach area so far, and for suggesting they were "blackmailing" the premier.

Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, she said Prime Minister Imran had admitted today that he was not going to Quetta "not because of a security threat but ego [and] his stubbornness".

"The nation wants to know what was the problem which prevented you from going and putting your hand on their heads. If this was due to obedience (tabedari), then the nation wants to know is obedience more important than the people's lives?" she said.

"If this is superstition then tell the nation so [it] knows the lives of 220 million people are not in the hands of any person or government but decided through superstition.

"If this is insensitivity and ruthlessness then tell the nation so we know not to look towards you in crisis and [know that] you won't come and call innocents blackmailers," the PML-N leader added.

On Sunday, armed attackers slit the throats of 11 miners in a residential compound near a mine site in Balochistan's Mach coalfield area, filming the entire incident and later posting it online. The gruesome attack was claimed by the militant Islamic State group.

Since then, thousands of Hazaras have staged a protest along with coffins containing the miners' bodies in the western bypass area in Quetta for more than five days, while members of the community have also held protests in other cities across the country.

Braving the biting cold, the mourners, including women and children, have refused to leave or lay the miners' bodies to rest until Prime Minister Imran visits them and the killers are brought to justice.

Earlier today, the prime minister was widely criticised on social media when, amidst countrywide protests and rising political pressure, he suggested that the protesters were "blackmailing" him by refusing to bury their loved ones until he visits them.

PM Imran promises to visit Quetta once Hazaras bury slain miners

PM Imran promises to visit Quetta once Hazaras bury slain miners
Prime Minister Imran Khan promised on Friday to visit the families of slain coal miners to express solidarity with them once they bury their loved ones.

“If the bereaved families bury the victims today I will go to Quetta today” the prime minister pledged while speaking at an event in Islamabad.
He said all of their demands had been met as of Thursday but the Hazara mourners were insisting on his visit to Quetta as a condition for burial of the victims, which, he said, is uncalled for.

“One of their demands is that they will bury the victims after the prime minister comes [to Quetta],” the PM said, adding: “No country’s premier is blackmailed like this.” He once again urged the members of the Hazara community to bury their loved ones.

He said he sent the interior minister first and then two of his cabinet members to the Hazara community to speak and sympathise with them and deliver a message that the government shares their sorrow and pain and fully stands behind them.

The premier said the Machh incident is part of an Indian conspiracy to incite anarchy and sectarian strife in Pakistan. The Indian plot was to murder religious scholars of different schools of thought, he disclosed.

Mercedes aims to outdo Tesla’s hallmark touchscreen

Mercedes aims to outdo Tesla’s hallmark touchscreen
Daimler AG’s on Thursday unveiled a new “Hyperscreen” display that will cover almost the entire dashboard of its luxury Mercedes-Benz models, in a bid to outdo Tesla’s large touchscreen infotainment system that has been a hallmark of the electric carmaker’s success.

In a video presentation, Daimler Chief Executive Ola Kallenius said the new screen – which at 56 inches (142.24 cm) in width dwarfs Tesla’s vaunted 17-inch screen – will make its debut in the EQS, Mercedes’ new fully electric sedan that will be unveiled later this year and will have a driving range of 700 kilometers (435 miles).

As well as including vehicle functions such as the speedometer, and music and navigation features, the screen will allow passengers to access some vehicle functions and, in some markets, to watch television without disturbing the driver.

Tesla has dominated global electric vehicle sales and traditional carmakers like Daimler have been pushing to develop vehicles to compete for market share.

The pressure to outdo Tesla has been heightened by tighter emissions standards in the European Union and China, and the decision by a growing number of countries to start banning sales of new petrol or diesel cars as early as 2030.

Trump finally acknowledges defeat, says transition will be orderly after Congress certifies Biden's victory

President Donald Trump
President Donald Trump for the first time acknowledged his defeat in the Nov 3 election and announced there would be an “orderly transition on Jan 20” after Congress concluded the electoral vote count early on Thursday, certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

Trump’s acknowledgment came after a day of chaos and destruction on Capitol Hill as a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol building and unleashed unprecedented scenes of mayhem as it tried to halt the peaceful transition of power. Members of Congress were forced into hiding, offices were ransacked, and the formal congressional tally halted for more than six hours.

“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on Jan 20,” Trump said in a statement posted to Twitter by his social media director. His own account had been locked by the company for posting messages that appeared to justify the assault on the seat of the nation’s democracy.

Trump added, “While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”

The statement was the first time Trump formally acknowledged his loss after spending the last two months refusing to concede and lobbing baseless allegations of widespread voter fraud, even though his own Justice Department, federal courts and state governments have said repeatedly the vote was carried out freely and fairly.

Breaking point

Trump’s refusal to accept reality and his incendiary rhetoric reached a breaking point on Wednesday when his supporters violently occupied the Capitol in one of the most jarring scenes ever to unfold in a seat of American political power. Authorities said four people died during the violence, including one woman who was shot by an officer outside the House chamber.

Trump had encouraged his supporters to march on the Capitol to protest lawmakers’ actions, and later appeared to excuse the violent occupation by the mob, which forced its way inside and clashed with police.

“These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long,” Trump wrote in a message that was later deleted by Twitter. He added, “Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!”

Trump’s response to the violence underscored his months-long obsession with trying to overturn the results of the election. He has spent the final days of his presidency angrily stewing and lashing out at Republicans for perceived disloyalty while refusing to acknowledge his loss or concede.

Trump’s statement could not be posted on his Twitter or Facebook feeds because both accounts had been blocked from posting.

Trump spent much of Wednesday afternoon watching the insurrection on television from his private dining room off the Oval Office. But aside from sparing appeals for calm issued at the insistence of his staff, he was largely disengaged. Instead, a White House official said, most of Trump’s attention was consumed by his ire at Vice President Mike Pence, who defied Trump’s demands by acknowledging he did not have the power to unilaterally choose the next president. The official was not authorised to discuss the matter and spoke only on the condition of anonymity.

Trump only reluctantly issued the tweets and taped a video encouraging an end to the violence. The posts came at the insistence of staff and amid mounting criticism from Republican lawmakers urging him to condemn the violence being perpetrated in his name, according to the official.

And even as authorities struggled to take control of Capitol Hill after protesters overwhelmed police, Trump continued to level baseless allegations of mass voter fraud and praised his loyalists as “very special.”

“I know your pain. I know you're hurt. But you have to go home now,” he said in a video posted more than 90 minutes after lawmakers were evacuated from the House and Senate chambers. “We can’t play into the hands of these people. We have to have peace. So go home. We love you. You’re very special.”

Mass resignations

The violence, coupled with the president’s tepid response, alarmed many in the White House and appeared to push Republicans allies to the breaking point after years of allegiance to Trump. After four years with no shortage of fraught moments, Wednesday’s events quickly emerged as the nadir of morale in the Trump White House, as aides looked on in horror at the chaos at the Capitol Trump had fomented.

A number of White House aides were discussing a potential mass resignation, according to people familiar with the conversation. And others quickly departed.

Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s chief of staff and a former White House press secretary, submitted her resignation on Wednesday. Deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger, White House social secretary Rickie Niceta and deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews also resigned, according to officials. More departures were expected in the coming days, officials said.

Other aides indicated they planned to stay to help smooth the transition to the Biden administration. And some harboured concerns about what Trump might do in his final two weeks in office if they were not there to serve as guardrails when so few remain.

Trump’s begrudging statement acknowledging defeat came after even longtime allies floated whether members of his Cabinet should invoke the 25th Amendment and remove him from office. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told ABC late Wednesday that “responsible members of the Cabinet” should be thinking about fulfilling their oath of office, adding that Trump had “violated his oath and betrayed the American people.”

Trump has been single-mindedly focused on his electoral defeat since Election Day, aides said, at the expense of the other responsibilities of his office, including the fight against the raging coronavirus. Indeed, it was Pence, not Trump, who spoke with the acting defence secretary to discuss mobilising the DC National Guard on Wednesday afternoon.

Hours earlier, Trump had appeared at a massive rally near the White House, where he continued to urge supporters to fight the election results and encouraged them to march to the Capitol in remarks that were peppered with incendiary language and rife with violent undertones. At one point, he even suggested he might join them — a prospect that was discussed by the White House but eventually abandoned.

“We’re going to the Capitol,” he said. “We’re going to try and give our Republicans [...] the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”

Earlier in the rally, his lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, had advocated what he had called “trial by combat.”

As the violence raged, Republican lawmakers and former administration officials had begged Trump to tell his supporters to stand down.

'Is your ego bigger than their pain?': Maryam to PM

Maryam Nawaz
While condoling with the grieving protesters, Maryam said she was at a loss for words because while the entire nation shared the pain of the Hazaras, no one could truly feel the tragedy that had befallen the miners' families.

She said she was aware that the Hazara population in Quetta "has been limited to a two-kilometre radius" and that they could neither freely earn their living nor move about freely in their schools and colleges.

"I am sad that you are calling for an insensitive man and he doesn't have the time to come here," she said while referring to Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"Today I want to say while putting aside all political differences, please visit, for God's sake. The state's job is to protect its people, especially those who are under attack and vulnerable."

While a state is referred to as a "mother", Maryam told the protesters, "I am aware that this mother did not serve you rightfully."

She continued while addressing the authorities: "If you have failed in your duty [to protect the Hazaras], then have some courage, come here and sympathise with these people."

The PML-N leader said the protesters accompanied by their loved ones' coffins were "awaiting" the prime minister.

"Is your ego bigger than their pain and these bodies? And then you say politics should not be done on this issue. We never do that, but if you think you can dodge your failure and callousness by crying 'politics', we won't let that happen," she added.

She said the premier "will have to come here and put his hand on the [protesters'] heads", stressing that the community was not demanding anything major but only for the prime minister to visit and talk so they could bury the miners' bodies.

"If you are not coming because you are afraid of criticism, then it's not a big deal; come here and listen to the criticism for a little while. But it is your duty to take part in your people's grief," she told Imran.

Maryam said protest leaders had told her they would not bury the dead if the premier did not visit them "even for 100 days".

"And if this ruler does not visit this place, then he should listen, this nation will no longer allow him to sit on the chair in Islamabad," she added.

Maryam had announced her visit in a tweet on Wednesday, saying: "On the direction of Nawaz Sharif I’m going to my sisters and brothers [in Balochistan] with a request to hand over their dead to Allah Almighty. I am sure they will not reject my request. For the last four days the Hazara community has been calling the heartless in Islamabad."

On Sunday, armed attackers slit the throats of 11 miners in a residential compound near a mine site in Balochistan's Mach coalfield area, filming the entire incident and later posting it online. The gruesome attack was claimed by the militant Islamic State group.

Since then, thousands of Hazaras have staged a protest along with coffins containing the miners' bodies in the western bypass area in Quetta, while members of their community have also held protests in Karachi.

Despite extremely harsh weather as the mercury drops to below freezing point, the mourners, including women and children, have refused to leave until Prime Minister Imran meets them and the killers are brought to justice.

Country-wide protests

Meanwhile, people have taken to the streets in several cities across the country as protesters express anger at the killing of the miners and demand protection for the Shia Hazara community.

In Karachi, protests continued for the third straight day with demonstrators blocking roads in the metropolis, causing traffic disruptions and delays in flight operations.

Protests were ongoing since 9am at 20 locations in the city, according to a statement by the Karachi Traffic Police.

A larger number of civil society activists also protested against the killings at Liberty Chowk in Lahore.

Holding placards and chanting slogans, the protesters demanded that Prime Minister Imran immediately visit the Hazaras in Quetta and that steps be taken to prevent such attacks in the future.

In Peshawar, protesters gathered at the Peshawar Press Club, saying their demonstration would not end until Prime Minister Imran went to Quetta.

They demanded that the perpetrators of the incident be arrested "soon" and an inquiry be launched.

We live in a land where food is expensive, but blood comes cheap: Bilawal

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari spoke at length to the Hazara community in Quetta on Thursday, condoling the deaths of their brethren who were brutally killed by terrorists five days ago.

Ten colliers were killed and four others were seriously injured on Sunday after armed men attacked them at a coal field in Balochistan's Bolan district.

Bilawal deplored the state's failure to implement the National Action Plan for deterrence of such crimes and how every time one comes to visit the community, it is because such an incident has occurred.

"Pakistan is a country where even the bodies of our deceased loved ones have to protest (for their rights). We live in a land where everything is expensive — gas, electricity and food — but the blood of our labourers comes cheap," said the PPP chairman.

His remarks came as a protest against the killings in Quetta entered the fifth day, with the heirs of the deceased refusing to bury them until Prime Minister Imran Khan comes and visits them. The premier has told the Hazara community he is cognisant of their suffering and demands and promised he will come and visit them "very soon", asking them to not delay burying their dead.

Bilawal said that since 1999, 2,000 Hazaras have died "but not even one family was provided justice".

He recalled a past occasion where a protest by the community with 100 bodies took place, and when demands were made. "Our government folded and then a new government came. And now again, another government has come and again you are protesting. And you have only one demand: that you be allowed to live."

He said that this sole demand is being echoed across Pakistan, on the streets of Karachi, Islamabad and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and all the supporters and well-wishers of the Hazara continue to stand by them.

"I can only promise you, that I, too, belong to a family of martyrs. We, too, have been unable to get justice. I promise you, the way we work day and night to ask for justice, you too are our brethren [...] till the day I die, and till I continue to serve the people, it will be my effort to (secure the lives of all our people)."

Bilawal said he appeals to the state to look to the needs of the people "who are the ones who love Pakistan the most".

"If you cannot provide these people justice, then who will we provide justice to? What will we tell the world? That we cannot guarantee the right to life here?"

Bilawal said it is the state's foremost duty to guarantee the protection of the citizens' lives and then it can look to employment and economic progress. He said, even in these areas, the Hazaras suffer injustice.

"But we will not speak about those issues. We only demand justice and the right to live."

"You promised to eradicate terrorism [...] and if today the terrorists can not only attack us, but spread hate also, then our National Action Plan has failed.

"We do not want to hear that foreign elements are involved. It is our state's failure if they succeed to murder our citizens like this," the PPP chairman said.

He said the state will have to begin with these people, and provide them safety and justice.

"We support all your demands and promise to you that in this injustice and oppression you are facing, the PPP will always stand by you, and soon we will also share in your happiness," Bilawal said.

The incident

The coal miners, according to police, were taken to nearby mountains where they were shot.

They were kidnapped before dawn on Sunday as they slept near a remote coal mine in the southwestern mountainous Machh area — 60 kilometres southeast of Quetta city, local government official Abid Saleem said.

Security officials who did not want to be named told AFP the attackers first separated the miners before tying their hands and feet and taking them into the hills to kill them.

Officials on Monday clarified ten people had died in the attack, revising a previous death toll of 11, AFP reported.

The militant group Daesh claimed the attack, according to SITE Intelligence, which monitors militant activities worldwide.

U.S. Congress accepts Electoral College result, Joe Biden's certifies 46 US president

U.S. Congress accepts Electoral College result, Joe Biden's certifies 46 US president
Democrat Joe Biden was cleared to be sworn in as U.S. president on Jan. 20 when Vice President Mike Pence declared that Congress had confirmed the Electoral College tally of states’ results that showed Biden the winner of the Nov. 3 contest against incumbent President Donald Trump.

Hours after hundreds of President Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol in a harrowing assault on American democracy, a shaken Congress formally certified Biden’s election victory.

Immediately after the certification, the White House released a statement from Trump in which he pledged an “orderly transition” on Jan. 20 when Biden will be sworn into office.

Congress had resumed its work certifying Biden’s Electoral College win late on Wednesday after the chaotic scenes on Capitol Hill, with debate stretching into the early hours of Thursday.

After debate the Senate and the House of Representatives rejected two objections to the tally and certified the final Electoral College vote with Biden receiving 306 votes and Trump 232 votes.

Vice President Mike Pence, in declaring the final vote totals behind Biden’s victory, said this “shall be deemed a sufficient declaration of the persons elected president and vice president of the United States.”

Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will take office alongside Biden on Jan. 20.

The outcome of the certification proceedings had never been in doubt, but had been interrupted by rioters – spurred on by Trump – who forced their way past metal security barricades, broke windows and scaled walls to fight their way into the Capitol.

Police said four people died during the chaos – one from gunshot wounds and three from medical emergencies – and 52 people were arrested.

Some besieged the House of Representatives chamber while lawmakers were inside, banging on its doors and forcing suspension of the certification debate. Security officers piled furniture against the chamber’s door and drew their pistols before helping lawmakers and others escape.

The assault on the Capitol was the culmination of months of divisive and escalating rhetoric around the Nov. 3 election, with the Republican president repeatedly making false claims that the vote was rigged and urging his supporters to help him overturn his loss.

Trump persisted in making the false claims he had won even as he said the transition would be orderly.

“Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th,” he said in a statement posted on Twitter by White House spokesman Dan Scavino.

Wednesday’s chaos unfolded after Trump – who before the election refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he lost – addressed thousands of supporters near the White House and told them to march on the Capitol to express their anger at the voting process.

He told his supporters to pressure their elected officials to reject the results, urging them “to fight.”

Some prominent Republicans in Congress strongly criticized Trump, putting the blame for the day’s violence squarely on his shoulders.

“There is no question that the President formed the mob, the President incited the mob, the President addressed the mob. He lit the flame,” House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney said on Twitter.

Republican Senator Tom Cotton, a leading conservative from Arkansas, called on Trump to accept his election loss and “quit misleading the American people and repudiate mob violence.”

Sultan Nazeer, the Karachi student killed in a fake encounter earlier this week, has been laid to rest in Hunza Thursday.

The burial was in Nazeer's hometown of Khanabad in Hunza.

But the policemen accused of murdering Nazeer are still at large, the police informed the administrative judge of an anti-terrorism court in Karachi the same day Nazeer was buried.

The investigation officer of the case submitted a report before the judge that the two police constables, Shabbir Ahmed and Jahangir Khan, were on the run. He told the court that efforts were underway to nab the absconding suspects.

A case was registered against the two Karachi policemen on Monday.

News of Nazeer's killing came two days after a 22-year-old Islamabad student, Usama Nadeem, was shot dead by the Anti-Terrorist Squad personnel.

The FIR against the Karachi cops was registered under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act at the Site A Section police station, where they are deployed.

It was registered on the request of Saleemullah, the cousin of the victim, Nazeer.

Nazeer was a student of BCom and used to work in Saddar. The victim’s family is worried over the pace of the investigation.

Speaking to The News, Saleemullah, a cousin of Nazeer, said the police had not contacted him since the lodging of the FIR and his family was not satisfied with the probe.

“He [Nazir] was a scout and has been buried in his homeland with full honour,” he said, expressing disgust over the initial claim made by police that the victim was a robber who got killed in an exchange of fire with police personnel in the SITE area. “Would a robber hire Bykea to mug people?” he questioned.

He said Nazir had come to Karachi from Hunza a couple of years ago and had started a small garments shop in the Saddar area with the help of his brother.

“The whole Gilgit-Baltistan is in anger over what Sindh police have done,” he said, referring to the videos and pictures of Nazir’s funeral being shared on social media. “He was a boy scout, a responsible person and a social activist. Labelling him a robber is an insult to his services to society.”

Terrorism incidents belie govt claims of having established peace: Fazl

Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) president Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) president Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Wednesday said recent incidents of terrorism in the country showed that the government's claims of having established peace were "wrong".

He was addressing what was the latest in a series of anti-government rallies planned by the PDM. Hosted by JUI-F, the rally in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Bannu district was attended by leaders of PDM constituent parties, but neither PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz nor PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari were present.

In his speech, Rehman accused the government of having "ruined" peace and the country's economy, and claimed that there was no system in the tribal areas.

"Claims were made that we have defeated terrorism, that there is peace in the country now.

"I say if the armed forces have given sacrifices against terrorism, then we have too and so has the nation. And if terrorism is [still] present then your claims were wrong," the JUI-F leader told the crowd.

He questioned why the armed forces were "still present" in the tribal areas. "Is terrorism not being ended so there is a justification for the army to stay there?" he asked.

Rehman alleged that the army was "spread everywhere in Balochistan", saying this was cited as a security requirement.

"I want to say in clear words that until the army remains in Pakistan's civilian areas, peace cannot be established," he added.

Condemning the murder of Hazara coal miners in Balochistan, he said terrorists were roaming "free to murder anyone".

Rehman said he was asked to "surrender" to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and added: "I said it was Gen Niazi who surrendered."

The JUI-F leader said the PDM had shown the nation "the path of freedom and democracy". He added that when the alliance was deciding its basic manifesto and objectives, it first stressed the need to implement the Constitution's Islamic clauses and "introduce Pakistan as an Islamic state".

JUI-F central general secretary Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri accused the government of having donned the "chadar of dictatorship".

He alleged that the government was defaming people through the NAB in the name of accountability.

"This government is selected, fake and incompetent," he said, accusing the rulers of having "sold Kashmir".

Prior to today's rally, a luncheon was organised for PDM's central and provincial leadership at the residence of JUI-F leader Akram Khan Durrani. Besides Rehman, Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Ahsan Iqbal, Ameer Muqam and other leaders had lunch there before heading to the rally venue.

'Failed' economy

Earlier, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal while addressing the rally hit out at the government over what he termed a "failed" economy and alleged unrest in the country.

He said while suicide bombings were an everyday occurrence in 2013, the PML-N had not only ended terrorism but also reinvigorated businesses, eliminated load-shedding and "turned darkness to light".

Iqbal also credited the PML-N with starting the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project in "the Pakistan where nobody would bring in even a dollar".

"If our government wasn't robbed in 2018 and with Maulana Fazlur Rehman sahib being a part of the government, then CPEC would today be producing hundreds of thousands of jobs," he claimed.

"By bringing this inept and selected [prime minister], the economy that was growing by 5.75 per cent was thrown down to -0.4pc."

Iqbal said there was "unrest across the country" and members of the Hazara community were sitting on the road in Quetta protesting the murder of coal miners along with their coffins. "But Imran Khan is stubbornly sitting in Islamabad; he couldn't be bothered to soothe their wounds because he was not elected but selected, and is now rejected," he alleged.

"If he worried about the people he would go to the Hazaras to condole with them, but his adviser went to the people whose relatives' coffins are lying on the road and asked 'what benefit will you give to Imran Khan if he visits you,'" the PML-N leader said, referring to the visit of Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfiqar Bukhari to Quetta.

"They do bargaining of benefit and loss even for people's bodies. What do they know about humanity?" he said, adding that Pakistan had fallen behind its South Asian neighbours in economic growth.

"How much farther back do we have to go? Today we have to decide that the fate of Pakistan is not poverty, unemployment and injustice."

The PML-N leader said a "joke" had been made out of the Pakistani state in the last 73 years. "The Quaid-i-Azam had said this state would succeed if its system is run by its people, but this state's system has been snatched from the people," he added.
