Shoaib Akhtar highly impressed with Babar Azam, called him ‘Mughal e Azam of Pakistan

Former Test cricketer Shoaib Akhtar praises Babar Azam
Pakistan’s former Test cricketer Shoaib Akhtar is highly impressed with Babar Azam who has learnt to convert the 50s and 60s into 100s.

Former Fast Bowler Shoaib Akhtar shared his views on Babar’s special knock against Bangladesh on Day 2 of the Pindi Test. He called him ‘Mughal e Azam of Pakistan’ for the way he has transformed himself into a challenging Test player.

“It is exciting to see Babar becoming a strong contender in Test cricket too. Initially, he struggled with converting those double figures into triple but he has changed himself and now is up with some good innings under his belt. He has started playing all the shots fearlessly and his strike-rate has improved which is a boost for him personally,” he said.

Akhtar thinks that Babar is giving tough time to the world’s current top-four batsmen including Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, and Joe Root. “He is challenging the top-tier of the batsmen in the world. He is focused on his target and accelerating towards them,” Akhtar marked.

On the other hand, the former speedster pointed out some weaknesses of team Pakistan in the ongoing Test against Bangladesh. First and foremost, is Yasir Shah who has been failed so far to make his presence felt. “The team management should be concerned over Yasir’s form. He is a good bowler and fastest to get 200 wickets in Test cricket. He has the potential to do well but needs some hard work,” he concluded.

Trump’s Middle East Plan "utterly unacceptable": Malaysian PM Mahathir

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said the proposed Israel-Palestine peace deal that was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump is “utterly unacceptable“ and “grossly unjust.”

The plan, dubbed the “Deal of the Century” by Trump, hands the holy city of Jerusalem on a silver platter to Israel in absolute disregard for the feelings of millions of Muslims and Christians worldwide, Mahathir said in a speech in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

“This deal will only bring more conflict to the region, and will antagonize billions of people around the world,” Mahathir said at the third conference of The League of Parliamentarians for Al-Quds.

Trump unveiled his proposal at a White House event last month alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Palestinian officials weren’t consulted on the proposal.

The White House approach leading to the plan has long been criticized internationally for providing Israel with quick wins while making concessions to the Palestinians contingent on a list of milestones.

Trump’s actions since taking office -- including moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Israeli sovereignty of the Golan Heights -- has largely benefited Israel while giving little to the Palestinians, who said the U.S. had given up its decades-long role as a credible mediator in the peace process.

Mahathir, the world’s oldest government head at 94 years old, has for decades been accused of anti-semitism for his criticism and attacks on Jews, whom he has accused of perpetrating a humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territories and creating conflict in the Middle East.

In 2003, Mahathir provoked international outrage when he said Jews “rule the world by proxy” and “they get others to fight and die for them.” He later said his words were distorted by the media.

Remember, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei also said that Donald Trump’s pro-occupation plan for ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will suffer demise even before the US president himself.

The Leader said, “The Americans are taking comfort in the belief that choosing a big name for the plot against the Palestinian nation will help it to succeed.” This is while this “foolish and evil” scheme “has been working to their own detriment from the very beginning.”

More than 100 migrants, including seven children, have been intercepted in the English Channel - the highest number in one day.

Five inflatable boats carrying individuals claiming to be from Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Syria were picked up by Border Force, the Home Office said.

Nine of the migrants managed to get to a beach in Kent where they were detained by police.

The 102 migrants who included seven children - are believed to be a new record for a single day.

The crossings come after 90 people were picked up on Thursday and as the UK braces for winds of up to 80mph and heavy rain when Storm Ciara hits this weekend.

Across the Channel, French authorities have also detained 'around 30 people'.

The English Channel is the world's busiest shipping lane, with 500 to 600 ships passing through the narrow strait every day.

On Friday, Border Force dealt with six incidents after being alerted to small boats that were headed towards the UK.

In the first incident, at around 1am, a Border Force vessel intercepted an inflatable boat which was carrying a group of 32 people - 26 men and six women - who presented themselves as Iranian and Iraqi nationals.

At around 2.45am, a small boat was intercepted which was carrying a group of 13 people - 12 men and one woman - who presented themselves as Iranian and Afghan nationals.

In the third incident, at around 3.55am, a Border Force vessel picked up a boat carrying a group of 15 people - 14 men and one woman - who presented themselves as Iranian nationals.

Ishaq Dar's house converted into shelter home

Ishaq Dar's house converted into shelter home
In a step to utilize the property of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) absconder leader Ishaq Dar to facilitate the homeless people, the Punjab government has decided to convert his Lahore residence into a shelter home.

According to Model Town assistant commission, at least 50 homeless people can be accommodated in the house. He said that Ishaq Dar’s Lahore house will be converted into shelter home on Saturday (tomorrow).

The initiative has been taken following the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had restrained the provincial government from auctioning the former finance minister’s house and issued a stay order at the plea of his wife.

The assistant commissioner was of the view that the court had issued stay order about auctioning but there was no hurdle in converting the property into a shelter home.

Earlier on January 28, Islamabad High Court had issued a restraining order against the accountability court’s decision regarding auction of former finance minister Ishaq Dar’s Lahore house.

The high court had suspended November 07, 2019, decision of the accountability court on a petition of Mrs Tabassum Ishaq, the spouse of Ishaq Dar.

A bench of the IHC comprises of Chief Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Lubna Saleem Pervez had issued the restraining order.

The bench had also issued notice to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and summoned its reply on February.

Coronavirus crisis deepens as whistleblower doctor dies

Coronavirus crisis deepens as whistleblower doctor dies
A Chinese doctor who was punished after raising the alarm about China’s new coronavirus died from the pathogen on Friday, sparking an outpouring of grief and anger over a worsening crisis that has now killed more than 630 people.

At least 31,000 people have now been infected by a virus that ophthalmologist Li Wenliang and colleagues first brought to light in late December.

The disease has since spread across China, prompting the government to lock down cities of tens of millions of people, and panic has spiralled around the globe as more than 240 cases have emerged in two dozen countries.

A quarantined cruise ship in Japan now has 61 confirmed cases.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, whose countries have tussled over trade and human rights, spoke on the phone about the health emergency on Friday.

Xi urged “the US side to respond reasonably to the novel coronavirus outbreak”, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Trump expressed his “confidence” in China’s ability to tackle the epidemic, the White House said.

Beijing has been angered by bans on arrivals from China instituted by the United States and other countries, accusing Washington of spreading “panic”.

Li, 34, died early Friday, Wuhan Central Hospital said in a post on China’s Twitter-like Weibo platform, an announcement that triggered grief on social media — over a doctor who was hailed a hero — and anger over the government’s handling of the crisis.

“He is a hero who warned others with his life,” a fellow Wuhan doctor wrote on Weibo.

“Those fat officials who live on public money, may you die from a snowstorm,” wrote one angry Weibo user in a comment that has since been censored.

In a sign that the criticism has shaken the Communist government, its anti-graft agency announced that it was sending a team to Wuhan to “conduct a comprehensive investigation into issues involving Dr. Li Wenliang reported by the masses”.

Palestinians deny US charges of incitement, blame Trump plan

Palestinians deny US charges of incitement, blame Trump plan
The Palestinians on Friday rejected United States' allegations of "incitement" after a day of clashes and attacks in which three Palestinians, including a member of the security forces, were killed, while a dozen Israeli soldiers were injured.

They linked the violence to US President Donald Trump's Mideast plan, which heavily favours Israel on all the most contentious issues of the conflict and would allow it to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has eagerly embraced the plan. The Palestinians have adamantly rejected it, but Abbas has not called for violence.

"Those who introduce plans for annexation and apartheid and the legalisation of occupation and settlements are the ones who bear full responsibility for deepening the cycle of violence and extremism," senior Palestinian official Saeb Erekat said in a statement.

He was responding to remarks delivered the day before by Jared Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and the architect of the Mideast blueprint, who had blamed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for the latest violence.

"Don't call for days of rage and encourage [your] people to pursue violence if they're not getting what they want," Kushner said on Thursday after briefing the United Nations Security Council on the plan.

The president's son-in-law claimed that Abbas was surprised with how good the plan was for the Palestinian people, but he locked himself into a position by rejecting it before it came out.

Erekat said Abbas will soon bring his own plan to the Security Council, one that he said is rooted in international law and based on a two-state solution along the 1967 lines.

The Palestinians want an independent state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip — territories seized by Israel in the 1967 war. They view Israel's settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which are home to some 700,000 people, as a major obstacle to peace. Most of the international community views the settlements as illegal.

The Trump plan would allow Israel to annex all its settlements as well as the strategic Jordan Valley. It would give the Palestinians limited autonomy in several chunks of territory with a capital on the outskirts of Jerusalem, but only if they meet nearly impossible conditions.

Palestinian security forces work with Israel to combat militant groups in the parts of the West Bank where Israel allows them to operate. Abbas has threatened to cut off security coordination in response to the Trump plan, but is not believed to have done so.

One of the three Palestinians killed on Thursday was Tariq Badwan, a member of the security forces who was standing at the entrance of a police station in the West Bank town of Jenin when he was shot by Israeli forces.

Israeli troops had clashed with Palestinians while demolishing the home of an alleged militant, and another Palestinian, 19-year-old Yazan Abu Tabekh, was also killed. The policeman did not appear to have been involved in the clashes, and several members of the security forces marched in a funeral procession for him on Friday.

The Palestinians linked the violence to US President Donald Trump's Mideast "peace plan", which heavily favours Israel on all the most contentious issues of the conflict and would allow it to annex large parts of the occupied West Bank.

An Arab citizen of Israel was shot dead on Thursday in the Old City, part of annexed east Jerusalem, after opening fire on Israeli police, lightly wounding one of them. Hours earlier, 12 Israeli soldiers were wounded when a car rammed into them elsewhere in the city. The driver, a Palestinian from east Jerusalem, was later apprehended in the West Bank.

Another Israeli soldier was lightly wounded in a shooting in the West Bank. The gunman fled the scene after trading fire with Israeli troops.

Abbas' forces are not allowed to operate in Jerusalem or near the West Bank settlements. He has no control over the Gaza Strip, where the Hamas group seized power from his forces in 2007. His policy of cooperating with Israel on security is deeply unpopular among Palestinians, many of whom see it as serving the Israeli occupation.

Palestinian militants in Gaza have fired a steady stream of rockets, mortar rounds and explosive balloons at Israel since the Trump deal was announced. Israel has responded with waves of airstrikes, but there have been no casualties from the exchanges of fire.

At last, federal govt agrees to appoint Mushtaq Mahar as Sindh top cop

Mushtaq Mahar
After weeks of wrangling between the federal and provincial governments over the appointment of a new police chief in Sindh, the former has finally agreed on the name of Mushtaq Mahar for the coveted post of inspector general of police.

Sources relayed the federal government has agreed to appoint as new IG Sindh Mushtaq Mahar, one of the five police officers recommended by the Sindh government for the post.

A notification to this effect will likely be issued in 48 hours, they added.

The sources said the Centre has conveyed its decision to the provincial government.

Earlier, on Feb 1, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah had penned yet another letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan to remove Inspector General of Police Kaleem Imam and pick one of the five names recommended by the provincial government for the coveted slot of the top cop.

This was a third letter the province’s chief executive has written to the premier on the issue of appointment of a new IG.

The chief minister said the federal cabinet’s Jan 28 decision to put the issue on hold is a violation of a 1993 agreement. He insisted that one of the five names floated for the post be chosen to replace the incumbent IG.

CM Murad said Kaleem Imam’s attitude is breeding hatred in the province as he has been mocking the provincial government with his non-serious and rude attitude.

Sindh governor briefs PM Imran on talks with MQM-P

Sindh Governor Imran Ismail called on Prime Minister Imran Khan
Sindh Governor Imran Ismail called on Prime Minister Imran Khan at his office in Islamabad on Friday.

During the meeting, Imran Ismail shared details of his recent talks with the leadership of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), one of PTI’s allies in the federal government.

Both the leaders agreed to accelerate efforts to woo MQM-P, said sources.

Matters pertaining to the transfer of IG Sindh, development projects, current political situation and other issues were discussed in the meeting.

Earlier on February 6, yet another round of talks between the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and its disgruntled ally Muttahida Qaumi Movement – Pakistan (MQM-P) had come to an end with the two sides seeming to be in agreement on the resolution of civic issues troubling the port city.

Speaking to media after the meeting, Planning Minister Asad Umar had regretted the metropolis had been ignored for years.

Stressing that the city has an important role in the country’s economic growth, he had said it was entitled to uplift schemes.

The federal minister had rejected the impression of confusion surrounding talks between the government and its ally saying the two parties, which he had said, held the mandate of the city want resolution of the issues confronting its denizens.

Karachi's rank improves by 5 places on global crime index

Karachi city
Karachi has been ranked at 93 in the latest global crime ranking published by Numbeo.com, improving its standing by five places since January 2020 and 22 places since mid-2019.

According to Numbeo, which compiles figures based on data submitted by residents, the current ranking is based on data up to 36 months old.

The website defines the 'Crime Index' as "an estimation of overall level of crime in a given city or a country".

"We consider crime levels lower than 20 as very low, crime levels between 20 and 40 as being low, crime levels between 40 and 60 as being moderate, crime levels between 60 and 80 as being high and finally crime levels higher than 80 as being very high," it says.

In January 2020, Karachi's crime level stood at 55.20 and thus the city was ranked at 88. Currently, the metropolis stands at a "moderate" crime level of 55.15 and has been ranked 93 among a total of 387 cities, signifying an improvement in the law and order situation.

According to a police statement, Sindh Inspector General of Police Syed Kaleem Imam noted that the city stood at number six with a "very high" crime level at one point in 2014.

"The Sindh province and all its large cities, particularly Karachi, have witnessed an overall improvement in law and order and crimes of various types have visibly reduced," he said.

The Sindh IGP attributed the improvement to better policing and stricter measures taken to combat crime.

He claimed that different kinds of crimes have reduced significantly in the province including murders, targeted killings, kidnapping for ransom, dacoities/robberies, extortion, etc.

Imam said that the police strategy and action against drugs, gutka mafia, gambling, and other dens of social ills are being made result-oriented.

The index has ranked Lahore at 236 with a "low" crime index of 38.25 and Islamabad at 306 with a crime level of 29.44.

The Venezuelan capital of Caracas is ranked the worst, with a "very high" crime level of 84.98 while Abu Dhabi is the safest city in the world with a crime level of just 11.49.

Numbeo.com was launched in April 2009 and the research and available data is the world’s largest database of user-contributed data about cities and countries worldwide. The website also claims that the information it provides is not influenced by any governmental organisation.

The data for each country are based on all entries from all cities in that country.

The website provides information on world living conditions including cost of living, housing indicators, health care, traffic, crime and pollution by taking into consideration the Consumer Price Index, Rent Index and Groceries Index.

Trump takes impeachment victory lap over 'vicious' Democrats

President Donald Trump
President Donald Trump celebrated his impeachment acquittal on Thursday in a rambling, emotional speech raging against the investigations that have overshadowed his entire administration.

Trump gathered scores of loyal Republican legislators, his legal team, wife Melania and White House aides in the ceremonial East Room and brandished the front page of The Washington Post, which read: "Trump acquitted."

"This is what the end result is," he said to a standing ovation.

Trump is on a victory lap after Wednesday's Senate vote clearing him of abusing his office and obstructing Congress.

But the event in the White House was an unusual mixture of Trump bitterly recounting Democratic-led investigations of his alleged corruption, and joking and praise for those who stood by him.

It was "not a news conference, not a speech, it's not anything," Trump said to whoops, cheers and whistling. "It's a celebration."

Trump said he'd been "through hell" but we ended up "winning" against "vicious" Democrats.

Then, at times, he veered off into long anecdotes about friends and enemies, turning what had been billed by officials as a "statement" into a more than hour-long monologue on live television.

He referred to former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) head James Comey, whom he abruptly fired in 2017, as a "sleazebag." He complained about "horrible dirty cops" and "bad and evil people," describing a two-year probe into his dealings with Russia as "all bullsh*t."

But at the end, he also called up his daughter Ivanka for a hug and the first lady for a kiss, saying, "I want to apologise to my family for having them have to go through a phoney rotten deal."

Trump now hopes to seize the momentum to push his reelection campaign against a divided Democratic party.

He began earlier on Thursday at the annual National Prayer Breakfast, a multi-faith gathering for Washington power brokers, business leaders and conservative evangelicals.

The theme of the breakfast was "love your enemy".

But from the moment he entered to the strains of "Hail to the Chief", Trump made his feelings clear by holding up a copy of USA Today with another banner headline proclaiming his acquittal.

In a tired, raspy voice, Trump indicated he was in no mood for forgiveness, saying he'd been "put through a terrible ordeal".

He also ripped into Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, who as speaker of the House led his impeachment, and Mitt Romney, the lone Republican senator to support the charges.

"I don't like people who use their faith as justification for doing what they know is wrong," he said in a clear reference to Romney, a devout Mormon who cited his faith as a reason for breaking ranks with Trump.

"Nor do I like people who say 'I pray for you' when they know that's not so," he added in a jab at Pelosi, who has often spoken of praying for Trump, and who was seated an arm's length away.

Right before Trump spoke, Harvard professor Arthur Patterson called on the audience to address the "contempt and polarisation that is tearing our societies apart".

Verdict reveals divisions

Trump was impeached in the Democratic-led House last December over his attempts to push Ukraine into opening what would have been a politically damaging corruption probe into election rival Joe Biden.

But the Senate, where Trump's Republicans hold a majority, cleared him Wednesday in a party-line vote illustrating the divisions running through the country ahead of the November polls.

Even though several conceded Trump's behaviour was wrong, Republicans ultimately stayed loyal, voting to clear the president of charges of abuse of power, by 52 to 48, and of obstruction of Congress, by 53 to 47 — far from the two-thirds supermajority required for conviction.

Romney, a longtime Trump foe, risked White House wrath to vote alongside Democrats on the first count, saying Trump was "guilty of an appalling abuse of public trust". He voted not guilty on the second charge.

Trump's impeachment and trial will leave a permanent stain on his record, as it did for the only two presidents to have encountered the same fate, Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998.

While the White House immediately declared that Trump had obtained "full vindication and exoneration," Pelosi warned that by clearing Trump Republicans had "normalised lawlessness".

"There can be no acquittal without a trial, and there is no trial without witnesses, documents and evidence," said the top Democrat in Congress — who a day earlier ripped up her copy of Trump's State of the Union address on live television.

"Sadly, because of the Republican Senate's betrayal of the Constitution, the president remains an ongoing threat."

But as he wound down the Senate proceedings, Republican majority leader Mitch McConnell said he was confident impeachment would ultimately damage the Democrats.

"They thought this was a great idea. At least for the short term, it has been a colossal political mistake."

UK court sentences Nasir Jamshed, accomplices for fixing PSL, BPL matches

Pakistani cricketer Nasir Jamshed
The Manchester Crown Court on Friday sentenced Pakistani cricketer Nasir Jamshed and two accomplices for conspiring to offer bribes to players in Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches.

Jamshed, along with accomplices Yousef Anwar and Mohammed Ijaz, was arrested as part of a National Crime Agency (NCA) probe into alleged spot-fixing.

An undercover police officer had infiltrated the network by posing as a member of a betting syndicate.

His work led to an attempted fix in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) towards the end of 2016, as well as an actual fix in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in February 2017.

In both cases, an opening batsman in the Twenty20 tournaments had agreed to not score runs from the first two balls of an over in return for payment.

Jamshed was said to be the target of bribery in the Bangladesh-based "two dot ball" plan. He then turned perpetrator as a go-between who encouraged other players to fix a PSL fixture between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi in Dubai on February 9.

The undercover operative had been introduced to "ringleader" Anwar, who was suspected of involvement in bribery and match-fixing in international cricket.

Their first meeting was held at a hotel in Slough in November 2016 where Anwar said he had six players working for him in the BPL.

Anwar openly admitted being involved in spot-fixing for about 10 years and went on to discuss a fee of £30,000 per fix with payment shared between those involved.

Anwar and Ijaz pleaded guilty to conspiring between November 2016 and December 2016 to offer financial advantages to players in the BPL with the intention of inducing them to perform poorly.

The pair also admitted the same charge in relation to players taking part in the PSL between November 2016 and February 2017.

Jamshed, who made more than 60 appearances for his country, had initially denied the PSL bribery offence but changed his plea to guilty during his trial in December.

Last year, Jamshed was banned from playing cricket for 10 years following an investigation by the Pakistan Cricket Board's anti-corruption unit.

Two other players, Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif, had received five year bans.

Bangladesh batting line-up crumble before Pakistan on day 1 of first Test

Pakisatn cricket team
Bangladesh were unable to recover from the early shocks of losing debutant Saif Hassan and Tamim Iqbal and were all out for 233 runs in their first innings of the first Test at the Pindi Stadium on Friday.

Pakistan's pace bowlers had struck early to leave Bangladesh struggling at 95-3. Shaheen Shah Afridi stood out as he picked four wickets for 53 runs. Mohammad Abbas and Haris Sohail took two wickets apiece while Naseem Shah dismissed one.

Abu Jayed, who got run out by a throw by Abbas, was the last man to go.

The top scorer from Bangladesh was Mohammad Mithun, who scored 63 runs with the help of seven boundaries and a six. He was caught behind by Mohammad Rizwan on a delivery by 16-year-old Naseem Shah.

Pakistan fast bowlers exploited a tinge of grass on the wicket at the Pindi Cricket Stadium after captain Azhar Ali won the toss and opted to field.

The visitors ran into early trouble against Pakistan's pace bowlers and after Afridi's early strike, Abbas successfully went for leg before wicket referral against Iqbal in the second over but Nigel Llong overturned a confident appeal.

Tamim, who scored a triple century in a domestic first-class game last week, scored only three in his comeback Test match after the left-hander missed Bangladesh's last Test series against India.

Abbas bowled two tidy spells in the first session and gave away only seven runs in his 10 overs for the key wicket of Tamim.

Mominul and Najmul played resolutely after two early setbacks and just when they looked to carry Bangladesh's fightback, Afridi broke the 59-run third-wicket partnership.

Mominul hit five that included two on driven fours in Afridi's one over before the left-armer induced a thin edge of Bangladesh skippers bat.

Pakistan opted for the same team that won the second Test against Sri Lanka in Karachi in December last year, playing with three fast bowlers and a lone spinner in Yasir Shah.

Al-Qaeda deputy leader Qassim al-Rimi killed in US raid in Yemen

Al-Qaeda deputy leader Qassim al-Rimi killed in US raid in Yemen
U.S President Donald Trump has confirmed that the U.S. killed the leader of the Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula jihadist group who claimed responsibility for a mass shooting at an American naval base.

U.S. President said in a statement on Thursday that the U.S. at his direction conducted a counter-terrorism operation in Yemen that killed Qassim al-Rimi.

Al-Rimi is a founder of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

The group has long been considered the global network's most dangerous branch for its attempts to carry out attacks on the U.S. mainland.

The jihadist group claimed responsibility for last year's deadly shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola, where a Saudi aviation trainee killed three American sailors.

While Trump confirmed reports that al-Rimi had been killed, he did not say when the U.S. operation was conducted or offer any details about how it was carried out.

He did, however, say that the U.S. and its allies are safer as a result of al-Rimi's death.

We will continue to protect the American people by tracking down and eliminating terrorists who seek to do us harm,' Trump said.

Trump's announcement confirmed earlier indications that al-Rimi had been killed.

U.S. drone strike

In late January, a suspected U.S. drone strike destroyed a building housing al-Qaida militants in eastern Yemen.

Also, on February 1, Trump retweeted several other tweets and media reports that seemed to offer confirmation that the strike had killed al-Rimi.

Al-Rimi had said in an 18-minute video that his group was responsible for the December 6 shooting at the base.

He called the shooter, Saudi Air Force officer Mohammed Alshamrani, a 'courageous knight' and a 'hero.'

The shooter opened fire inside a classroom at the base, killing three people and wounding two sheriff´s deputies before one of the deputies killed him. Eight others were also hurt.

The SITE monitoring group said he had posted a short manifesto on Twitter prior to the attack that read: 'I'm against evil, and America as a whole has turned into a nation of evil.'

'I hate you because every day you (are) supporting, funding and committing crimes not only against Muslims but also humanity.'

The Twitter account that posted the manifesto also condemned US support for Israel and included a quote from Al-Qaeda's deceased leader Osama bin Laden.

The shooting focused public attention on the presence of foreign students in American military training programs and exposed shortcomings in the screening of cadets.

In January, the U.S. sent home 21 Saudi military students, saying the trainees had jihadist or anti-American sentiments on social media pages or had 'contact with child pornography,' including in internet chat rooms.

Around 850 Saudis are among the 5,000 foreign military personnel being trained in the United States.

A resolution calling for the public hanging of offenders convicted for sexually abusing and murdering children was passed in the National Assembly on Friday with a majority of votes.

The resolution was presented in the parliament by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan and passed by all lawmakers, apart from PPP's.

Turkish President to address Pakistan's parliament on February 14

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to address Pakistan's parliament on February 14
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will address Pakistan's parliament on February 14 during his visit to the country, confirmed Speaker of the National Assembly Asad Qaiser, on Thursday.

Erdogan is scheduled to visit Pakistan on February 13. Qaiser further said that the Turkish president is also expected to hold talks with parliamentarians during his visit to the country.

In an interview to Anadolu Agency a couple of days ago, PM Imran said Erdogan's visit to Pakistan will strengthen ties between the two countries.

He lauded President Erdogan's statement against India for Kashmir and said that governments of the two countries were developing strong contacts with each other.

PM Imran had said Erdogan was expected to bring along various business houses and investors who would meet their Pakistani counterparts with an aim to enhance bilateral trade.

He had also said Turkey could help Pakistan in many sectors including mining, adding Pakistan also desires technology transfer from Turkey in various areas.

Relations between Pakistan and Turkey became strained when PM Imran cancelled his trip to Kuala Lumpur at the last minute. A summit of leading Muslim countries were supposed to gather at the summit to discuss issues being faced by the Muslim community.

A group of Muslim countries led by Saudi Arabia, boycotted the event. Saudi Arabia said its leaders were not attending the summit because it was being held outside the aegis of the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation based in Jeddah.

Erdogan claimed that Saudi Arabia had threatened Pakistan with economic consequences to coerce it into skipping the moot.

"Unfortunately, we see that Saudi Arabia pressures Pakistan," Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah quoted Erdogan as saying.

"Now, there are promises that the country has given to Pakistan regarding the central bank. However, more than that, there are 4 million Pakistanis working in Saudi Arabia. They (threaten by saying that they) would send (Pakistanis) back and re-employ Bangladeshi people instead," Erdogan was quoted as saying in an interview.

"We see Saudi Arabia issuing economic threats to Pakistan and threatening to replace the 4 million Pakistani workers with Bangladeshi workers."

NAB prosecutor grilled as LHC grants bail to Hamza in Ramzan Sugar Mills case

Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shahbaz
The Lahore High Court on Thursday granted bail to Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shahbaz in the Ramzan Sugar Mills case.

A two-member bench comprising Justice Syed Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi and Justice Chaudhry Abdul Aziz heard the petition.

During the hearing on Thursday, the court grilled the NAB prosecutor over glaring holes in the investigation.

"Why was a supplementary reference filed against the accused when an existing reference had already been filed?" questioned the court.

The NAB prosecutor replied that whenever there had been a new development, a supplementary reference was filed.

"Please point out the laws under which a supplementary reference can be filed after an initial reference has already been filed," the court demanded.

"You do not have any answer to the questions that have been asked. Why are you wasting the nation's time and money?" the judge remarked.

If the investigation officer is unable to file something in 90 days, are they whiling away their time playing board games, the judge questioned.

The court asked the NAB prosecutor whether the drains in question were only made to benefit Ramzan Sugar Mills. "If that is the case, then you have a case for misuse of power."

However, the prosecutor replied that the investigation officer who probed the case was currently on leave due to his examinations.

This prompted Justice Naqvi to say: "Considering the standard of your inquiry, you should all be given the Pride of Performance Award."

On the other hand, Hamza Shehbaz's counsel argued that so far, none of the evidence presented before the court, had proven his client's guilt.

In his petition, Hamza had argued that NAB initiated the inquiry against him with malicious intentions and failed to find any irregularity committed by him.

It had said that the drain in question was built in Bhawana tehsil in public interest after the provincial cabinet and the assembly had granted approval for its construction.

Hamza also argued in the petition that the co-accused in the case, his father and former Punjab chief minister Shehbaz Sharif, had already been granted bail by the court.

The court will hear the bail petition in the money laundering case against Hamza on February 11 (Tuesday).

In a statement on Thursday, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb stated: "Time has, once again, proven the innocence of the leaders of PML-N.

"Those working for the people’s welfare are being proven innocent in the courts," she added.

Avalanches leave over 40 dead in Turkey

Avalanches leave over 40 dead in Turkey
The death toll from two avalanches in eastern Turkey rose to 41 on Thursday, the government's disaster management agency said, as rescue teams continued a difficult search for two missing people.

Five were killed in the first avalanche in Van province bordering Iran on Tuesday, only for rescuers to be hit by a second avalanche the following day.

Three more bodies were recovered Thursday, the DHA news agency said, with the AFAD disaster agency saying a total of 84 people had been injured in the twin avalanches.

Rescue efforts continued despite adverse weather conditions that caused transport problems. Authorities have banned civilian access to the scene, DHA reported.

Last month, the eastern province of Elazig was hit by a powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake that killed 41 people and injured more than 1,600 others.

A 2009 avalanche in the northeastern province of Gumushane killed 11 climbers in the Zigana mountains.

Former MNA Jamshed Dasti arrested in Multan

Former Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Jamshed Dasti
Former Member of the National Assembly (MNA) Jamshed Dasti was arrested on Thursday for his alleged involvement in the oil tanker robbery case.

Dasti was arrested from the city's Cantt area while he was trying to reach the high court to seek bail in the oil tanker robbery case.

The ex-MNA is a suspect in an alleged oil tank robbery that took place in December 2019. A case has been registered against Dasti for being involved in robbing an oil tanker and kidnapping the drivers and helpers of the tanker.

According to a local report, Chowk Police registered a case against the former lawmaker under sections 395, 365, 170 and 171 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

The report said police sources had disclosed that an oil tanker on its way from Dera Ghazi Khan to Multan was stopped near Muzaffargarh on the night of December 24.

The tanker was allegedly stopped by a police van. Four men in elite force uniforms came out of the van and forcibly took the tanker's driver and his helper to an undisclosed location. There, they beat the two men up and transferred oil worth millions into another tanker.

PIA CEO's appointment 'illegal,' Arshad Malik should return salaries: AGP

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chief Executive Air Marshal Arshad Malik
An audit report compiled by the Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) has termed the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chief Executive Air Marshal Arshad Malik's appointment "illegal", recommending he be removed immediately and return salaries he withdrew as the airline's top boss.

Noting that Malik's appointment was ill-intentioned, nepotism, a violation of rules and regulations, and illegal, the AGP said the CEO was appointed using the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan's (SECP) rules and forces' deputation. This, he added, was clearly and blatantly against transparency.

The AGP's report further recommended that the CEO's appointment, which was against the national carrier's rules, be investigated by an independent institution. The Aviation Division should also point out who was responsible behind Malik's hiring.

Moreover, it should be determined where the PIA Board of Directors displayed negligence, especially when the Supreme Court had clearly ruled that the appointment of the airline's former boss, Musharraf Rasool Cyan, was illegal and declared it null and void.

In fact, at that time as well, the Board had come under fire when Justice Ijazul Ahsan — part of the top court's three-judge bench — had asked if it had interviewed Cyan.

Why, then, the AGP asked in the report, was the top court's ruling in the Cyan case violated again? Had Malik presented himself to the interview board, he would have had to resign from the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).

It was further claimed in the report that the PIA refused to assist the AGP's team, which is why it could not be determined as to how much Malik illegally gained in financial benefits. However, an estimate suggests that around Rs3 million were provided to him as allowances and entitlements during the eight months he remained the CEO.

In addition to this, the PIA's rules and regulations stipulate that three months prior to a sitting CEO's term is set to end, there should be a call in the newspapers for applications for the soon-to-be-vacant post. In Malik's case, the opposite was done.

He was appointed, through a written order dated April 26, 2019, as the chief executive for three years. Experience requirements in the newspaper advertisements published after the appointment included war course, shipping, naval aviation, and military operations in order to provide Malik an edge over other applicants.

Last month, the Supreme Court had rejected Malik’s plea seeking the court’s intervention in allowing him to continue as the national carrier's chief executive. He had approached the apex court against the Sindh High Court's Dec 31, 2019, order, which stopped him from performing his functions.

In the Jan 21 hearing, Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed had remarked that the airline was not someone’s private property and reminded the petitioner that it was a national asset. “We will not allow anyone to play with PIA’s fortune,” the CJP remarked, observing further that a case regarding appointments in the PIA was already filed as a human rights case.

The apex court, while disposing off the petition, said all cases related to the PIA would be merged into a single case. The bench also summoned the record of the pending SHC case.

The apex court directed the PIA's board to run the the affairs of the airline.

Last year, the SHC had stopped the PIA CEO from performing his functions as the airline's head after a petition by Safdar Anjum — the general secretary of the airline's Senior Staff Association (SASA) — challenging Malik's appointment was filed earlier at the high court.

The petition stated that Malik neither fulfilled the post's educational requirements nor had any relevant experience.

At the time, the two-member bench had told the airline from transferring, hiring or firing employees and from buying or selling any assets. The bench said the national flag bearer could not sell assets worth over Rs10 million or make policies for the time-being.

A graduate of the National Defence University (NDU) and qualified in Air Command and Staff Course from the US, Malik had served as the vice chief of the air staff prior to joining the PIA.

He also served more than 40 years in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) before being appointed the airline's chairperson on October 11, 2018, by the federal government, and, later, on April 2, 2019, as its CEO.

Kashmiris' struggle 'destined to succeed' in spite of ordeal: COAS

Corps Commanders' Conference at the General Headquarters
Kashmiris' justified struggle was "destined to succeed" in spite of ordeal, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa said while presiding the 229th Corps Commanders' Conference here at the General Headquarters (GHQ).

According to a statement issued Thursday by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting paid a glowing tribute to those living in the occupied Kashmir and braving a continued siege as well as the Indian Army's brutalities.

"Repression of Indian occupying forces can never deny Kashmiris their right to self-determination as promised by UN resolutions. Regardless of the ordeal, their just struggle is destined to succeed," Gen Bajwa said, as per the ISPR's statement.

The CCC also reviewed the geo-strategic situation, focusing especially on Pakistan's internal security and the situation on borders. "Provocative statements of Indian leadership are irresponsible rhetoric with implications for the region," it added.

As per the military's media wing, the commanders resolved that Pakistan's armed forces "are forces of order and peace and fully prepared to thwart any misadventure, whatever the cost".

"Forum was also apprised about the progress of 'Operation Radd ul Fasaad' which has put security situation of the country on a positive trajectory for enduring peace and stability," the press release read.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Imran Khan warned his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, saying if the latter dared to attack Pakistan, it would be his "last mistake".

"Modi, your first mistake was on August 5 when you revoked the special status of Kashmir," the prime minister said at Mirpur rally. "If you attack Pakistan and conquer it in 10 days like you said, I guarantee that each and every person in this country will fight you till the last breath.

"Our army is battle-hardened and has taken on terrorism and defeated which even the best troops in the world could not do," he remarked. "I can guarantee you now that Kashmir will now be independent."

The premier said Kashmir issue "has become internationalised" in the last six months. "Today we are a country that solves issues. Whether it is an issue with Iran and Saudi Arabia or it is about the Afghan peace process, we try our best to solve it," he added.

The PM also called out Modi over jetting on a campaign of hatred to win the elections. "Anything based on hate always ends in disaster," he said. "After he won the election he said he would do that in Kashmir what was in the RSS manifesto and revoked Kashmir’s autonomy and put it under lock-down.

"To the people of Kashmir I just want to say that our prayers are with you and I can guarantee you that you will now become independent," he added.

“Deal of the century” to die sooner than Trump himself: Ayatollah Khamenei

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says Donald Trump’s pro-occupation plan for ending the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will suffer demise even before the US president himself.

Ayatollah Khamenei made the remarks on Wednesday in an address to a group of Iranians hailing from various walks of life in Tehran on Wednesday, a week after Trump unveiled the controversial scheme, which he calls the “deal of the century.”

The Leader said, “The Americans are taking comfort in the belief that choosing a big name for the plot against the Palestinian nation will help it to succeed.” This is while this “foolish and evil” scheme “has been working to their own detriment from the very beginning.”

The Leader emphasized that the plan is doomed to die even before Trump’s own death, adding that Washington’s push “will definitely end in failure.”

Ayatollah Khamenei further downplayed the warm reception of the plot by some “perfidious” Arab rulers, who are unpopular at home and have lost face among their own peoples, adding that such a show of support does not bear any significance.

“The Americans have made a deal with the Zionists over something that is not theirs [to give away in the first place]. Palestine belongs to Palestinians, and making decisions concerning it is exclusive to them,” the Leader stated.

Referring to Washington and Tel Aviv, the Leader said, “Who are you to make decisions for other people's lands and homes? This indicates your evilness, cunning, and malevolent nature.”

Ayatollah Khamenei reassured that Trump’s scheme contrarily does Washington disservice and serves instead to revive the issue of Palestine, the Leader said.

The Leader said the world’s arrogant powers will, however, attempt to push the plan through by relying on force and money, and that the Palestinian nation and all Palestinian factions and organizations should dedicate themselves to resisting America and Israel. The entire Muslim world should in turn back up that struggle, Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Leader said the geographical expanse of resistance is increasingly widening in the West Asia region.

Ayatollah Khamenei said armed Palestinian resistance organizations will keep up their struggle and that the Islamic Republic considers it an obligation to support those groups “and will thus support them in whatever manner and to whatever extent it can.”

The Leader said the solution to the Palestinian issue is to hold a referendum in which people of Palestinian origin and of any faith — whether Muslim, Christian, or Jewish — would take part and declare their view about all Palestinian lands.

The Leader’s speech coincided with the fourth day of the Decade of Dawn. The annual celebrations commemorate the ten-day period in 1979 that began with the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini’s return from exile to Iran and culminated in the Islamic Revolution against the US-backed Pahlavi regime.

Ayatollah Khamenei stressed the need for the Iranian nation’s turnout in both the celebratory marches that will come on the Revolution’s 41st anniversary and the upcoming parliamentary elections that have been scheduled for February 21 as “two big tests facing the great Iranian people.”

The Leader said that by staging the Revolution, the Iranians managed to upend the foundation of thousands of years of absolute monarchical rule over the country with Imam Khomeini’s guidance.

Ayatollah Khamenei also described the elections as the country’s “most essential issue” given its contribution to the appointment of worthy decision makers.

“If a general election takes place powerfully and correctly, all the existing problems will gradually be resolved,” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

That Iran has regularly held various elections since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 is a sign of how the Iranian establishment has been firmly reliant on people’s votes, the Leader said.

“Of course, the Islamic establishment is religious as well, and that is why democracy in Iran is ‘Islamic democracy,’” Ayatollah Khamenei said.

The Leader said elections in Iran are among the world’s soundest, and urged all people to take part in the upcoming parliamentary polls.

“Anyone who takes interest in the country, its security, the resolution of its problems, and the healthy turnover of elites should partake in the polls,” Ayatollah Khamenei remarked.

“A lively vote and people’s all-out turnout at the ballot boxes will guarantee the country’s security because enemies fear the establishment’s popular support more than its armaments,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei recalled how some foreign media outlets had tried to downplay the Iranians’ millions-strong presence on nationally-important occasions, while at the same time hyping up the foreign-backed riots by a few hundred people.
