Australia bag Afghanistan for 207 runs in World Cup 2019

australia vs afghanistan
Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib took the bold decision to bat against champions Australia in their World Cup opener at Bristol on Saturday.

Afghanistan recovered from a disastrous start against defending champions Australia on Saturday to reach 37 for two after 10 overs in their World Cup opener in Bristol.

Gulbadin Naib, captain of the rank outsiders, took the bold decision to bat in warm conditions, hoping to post a defendable total his spin bowlers could exploit.

But the decision backfired badly, with both openers departing for ducks as Afghanistan slipped to five for two in the second over.

Mohammad Shahzad was bowled by Mitchell Starc in the opening over of the match and Hazratullah Zazai quickly followed, caught behind by wicket-keeper Alex Carey off Pat Cummins.

But Rahmat Shah led the fightback for Afghanistan, playing in only their second World Cup, to be unbeaten on 26 at the 10-over mark. Hashmatullah Shahidi was six not out.

Gulbadin explained he wanted to give his spinners a target to defend.

"It looks quite a good, flat wicket," he said at the toss.

"We have three spinners in the side and we want to put a score on the board for them. Morale is high and hopefully we can start well."

As expected, former Australia captain Steve Smith and opener David Warner were both included for their first full major international match since they completed year-long bans imposed after a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

Warner was passed fit to play after recovering from a sore glute.

Australia preferred Usman Khawaja to fellow batsman Shaun Marsh, with all-rounder Glenn Maxwell included in their XI.

"I’d have batted first too," said Australia captain Aaron Finch. "Hopefully we can find some movement early on and get wickets."

Teams

Afghanistan: Mohammad Shahzad (wkt), Hazrat Zazai, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Najibullah Zadran, Mohammad Nabi, Gulbadin Naib (capt), Rashid Khan, Dawlat Zadran, Mujib Ur Rahman, Hamid Hasan

Australia: Aaron Finch (capt), David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey (wkt), Nathan Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa.

World Cup 2019: Henry leads New Zealand charge to trash Sri Lanka for 10 wickets

newzealand won from srilanka
Fast bowlers Matt Henry and openers scripted a thumping win over Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the World Cup match played in Cardiff on Saturday.

Henry returned figures of 3-29 in his seven overs of pace and swing to justify skipper Kane Williamson´s decision to bowl first as New Zealand ran through the Sri Lanka line-up in 29.2 overs. The Lankans managed to score only 137.

The score was successfully chased by the openers Martin Guptill (73) and Colin Munro (58).

Lockie Ferguson also claimed three wickets in the absence of senior paceman Tim Southee, who missed the game due to a calf injury.

Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne was the lone batsman to impress amid the carnage with his unbeaten 52.

His 52-run stand with Thisara Perera, who made 27 off 23 balls, was all that stood between Sri Lanka and complete humiliation.

Henry's early strikes, including two in succesive deliveries, pushed Sri Lanka on the back foot on 53 for four in just the 12th over.

He struck with the second delivery of the game to send Lahiru Thirimanne trudging back to the pavilion after the left-handed opener had hit a boundary from the first ball.

Thirimanne was initially ruled not out by the on-field umpire, but the Kiwis successfully reviewed the lbw call in their favour after replays suggested the ball pitched on line and would have hit the batsman's leg stump.

The left-handed Karunaratne, who has returned to the one-day side after a gap of four years, then put on 42 runs for the second wicket with Kusal Perera.

But Williamson kept Henry on for the bowler's fifth over and the decision paid off as he got Perera for 29 and Kusal Mendis without scoring.

Dhananjaya de Silva played the hat-trick ball with a glorious off drive, but soon fell to the pace of Ferguson after being trapped lbw.

The rest of the batting showed little promise with three scores of naught in the innings, including former captain Angelo Mathews.

Karunaratne fought on to register his third ODI fifty in 81 balls before he ran out of partners after Lasith Malinga was bowled by Ferguson for one.

Pacemen Colin de Grandhomme, James Neesham, Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner, the team's only spinner, claimed a wicket each.

Petrol prices: Why are they rising?

Increase in Petroleum Products
Motorists are in for a bumping ride this Eid, as petroleum prices spike up once again across the country.

Every month, barring a few, the new federal government has been nudging up the price of petrol making life more difficult for commuters.

Why are the prices so high?
There are some things that the state can’t control when it comes to pushing up fuel prices, such as the global market.

Internationally, the price of petrol is just as eye-watering, due to a reduction in global oil production. The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies are cutting oil output to boost up prices. Then, there are the US sanctions on Iran and Venezuela and the unrest in Libya, some oil-producing countries, which affect the wholesale cost.

Now for the things under the state’s control.

We need to understand how petrol prices are calculated. The amount Rs112.68 per litre is a sum of taxes and commissions.

There is a base price of petrol per litre. Add to that the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL), a tax collected by the central government. Till May 1, it was fixed at Rs12 per litre. Now, it is Rs14 per litre.

After the PDL is the oil marketing companies profit of Rs2- 3 per litre, the dealer's profit is an estimated Rs2-2.5, import tax is one per cent, then there are the transportation charge, which varies, and finally the General Sales Tax (GST). All these combined provide the total petrol price per litre.

Did we get your head spinning?
Now, while most of these amounts remain the same, the government has been increasing the GST more regularly to meet its revenue shortfall. Before May 1, the GST was two per cent of the total petrol price, which was increased to a whopping 12 per cent before Ramzan and it went up again to 13 per cent on June 1.

One debate in the government circles it to keep the GST fixed, since the amount is collected by the provinces, and to instead hike up the PDL, so the money goes to the federal government.

Either way, one thing is for sure, a further uptick is on the cards. So, buckle u

Mickey Arthur disappointed by Pakistan's dismal show vs West Indies

Head Coach Mickey Arthur
Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur has expressed his disappointment at his side's dismal show in World Cup match against West Indies.

Mickey, after Pakistan's seven-wicket defeat at the hands of West Indies at Trent Bridge on Friday, highlighted that team couldn't take their preparation to the game.

"Yes, it was a shocking start and batting…the players did not take the prep into the middle. But we will dust ourselves off and come back strongly," he said.

Pakistan lost half of its wickets to short balls, exposing the team's shortcoming to play short-pitched deliveries. But Mickey says the team was well prepared for that.

"We knew that we are going to get short pitch bowling and had prepared very well for it. So it was disappointing to see us play like that," he said.

Pakistan next plays hosts England on June 3 at the same venue and the head coach is hoping for a comeback against them.

"We know how good England are but we know them and are battle-hardened against them," he said.

"We have assessed what went wrong and will continue to work on those things," he added.

Sarfaraz opens up about West Indies defeat and Pakistan's disappointing start to World Cup 2019

sarfaraz press conference
I know our fans will be disappointed with the manner in which we played in our World Cup opener against the West Indies. We are hurt too as no one wants to lose a World Cup match like that. All those who have played this great game will vouch the pain the players undergo following such an ordinary performance.

What went wrong? I can say a number of things, but by stating those facts I will not try to hide behind excuses.

To begin with, the starting time was very crucial. A 10:30 start made the toss very important. We too wanted to bowl first but toss is never in your control. I lost it and the West Indies, like any other team would have done, sent us into bat.

We always expected it to be a hard game. We were ready for a barrage of short pitch balls and had prepared for it. But, we lost too many wickets up front that pegged us back.

I would pinpoint Andre Russell's two wickets of Fakhar Zaman and Haris Sohail. That shook us in the Powerplay and when you lose three top-order wickets in the first ten overs, it going gets tougher.

I think our shot selection was not good and we lost a number of batsman to short pitch deliveries.

The other main thing that contributed to the batting’s downfall was our failure to build partnerships. I think the highest partnership of the innings was for the last wicket, which produced 22 runs.

Fakhar and Babar had good starts and they were playing their shots. Unfortunately, Fakhar was bowled off an inside edge and Babar had a very soft dismissal. Its always important at any level of cricket to capitalise on good starts, which the two couldn’t do.

I also want to negate the impression that it was a 400-plus pitch or the one on which England had piled a world record of 481 runs last year. No, this was a fresh pitch and it was sticky. The ball was stopping on it. Because of the day match, there was moisture on it. If you remember we scored 340 batting first on this same venue against England in the fourth ODI because it was a late start and there was no moisture and the ball was properly coming onto the bat.

Why we did not play Asif Ali? It was because we wanted to play with full batsmen and bowlers -- five bowlers and six batsmen – with Mohammad Hafeez our off-spinner who we wanted to use against their left-handers.

I think our bowlers, particularly Mohammad Amir, bowled well. It was good to have Amir back in form. We know what he is capable of and it will be good for us in the next matches as well. After we were bowled out for 105, our target was to get wickets and West Indies countered that by playing big shots. They released the pressure by hitting big and that happens.

Despite the defeat, I am confident that we have the ability to bounce back. We have to back ourselves and not think too much about what happened in the first game.

That match is gone, we have the type of players who can win the next match for us. Insha'Allah, we will bounce back in the next matches. All matches will be tough, so we need to regroup ourselves and come hard in the next match. The format of this tournament is good and it allows every team to bounce back. I will tell the boys not to think too much of what has happened. It's gone, we have to move forward with a resolve that we can do better than this.

England are a tough team but we have played them in a series recently. So, all we need is to play at our potential and come up with a win.

I am sure you will see a good show from us in the next game.

Pakistan’s polio program no longer on-track: WHO

Pakistan’s polio program
Pakistan’s polio eradication program is no longer on-track, noted the International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee, convened by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The Emergency Committee reviewed the data on wild poliovirus (WPV1) and the implementation of the WHO Temporary Recommendations in Afghanistan, DR Congo, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Somalia.

Regarding Pakistan, the Committee stated that it “is gravely concerned by the significant further increase in WPV1 cases globally this year, particularly in Pakistan.”

It added that in the country the transmission of the virus continues to be widespread and recent “cluster of cases in Lahore also indicates that vulnerabilities still exist outside the high-risk corridors.” The committee further expressed its concerns about the attacks on vaccinators and the police accompanying them.

“The increasing refusal by individuals and communities to accept vaccination also needs to be actively addressed. While the committee understood that the recent elections and political transition may have adversely affected the delivery of the polio program, it is now essential that the new government renews its efforts, noting that the eradication program in the country is no longer on-track.”

The Committee unanimously agreed that the risk of international spread of poliovirus remains a public health emergency. It noted that “the progress made in recent years appears to be reversing,” indicated by the rising number of WPV1 cases in Pakistan, the rising proportion of environmental samples that are positive for WPV1 in Afghanistan and Pakistan and the increasing resistance to polio programs.

It also recommended that the above countries ensure that all residents between four week and 12 months receive a dose of oral vaccine before international travel. In addition, the travellers be provided an international certificate of vaccination.

A total of 20 cases have been recorded in Pakistan this year to date

North Korea 'executed' officials after failed Trump summit: report

North Korea 'executed' officials after failed Trump summit
North Korea executed its special envoy to the United States following the collapse of the second summit between leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump, a South Korean newspaper reported Friday.

The Chosun Ilbo said Kim Hyok Chol, who laid the groundwork for the Hanoi meeting and accompanied Kim on his private train, was executed by firing squad for “betraying the supreme leader” after he was “won over to the US” during pre-summit negotiations.

“Kim Hyok Chol was executed in March at Mirim Airport along with four senior foreign ministry officials following an investigation,” the newspaper quoted an unidentified source as saying. The other officials were not named.

Asked about the account, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington was trying to verify it. “We've seen the reporting to which you're referring. We're doing our best to check it out,” he told reporters on a visit to Berlin.

“I don't have anything else to add to that today.”

Kim Hyok Chol was the North's counterpart of US special representative Stephen Biegun in the run-up to the Hanoi summit in February.

South Korea's Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean relations, declined to comment on the report.

'Sent to prison camp'

Some previous South Korean reports of North Korean purges and executions have later proved inaccurate. The paper also said Kim Jong Un's interpreter Shin Hye Yong was sent to a prison camp for a mistake at the summit.

She failed to translate Kim's new proposal when Trump declared “no deal” and walked away from the table, Chosun reported, citing another unnamed diplomatic source.

Kim Jong Un and Trump left the Vietnamese capital without a deal after they failed to reach agreement on rolling back Pyongyang's nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.

The North has since sought to raise the pressure and carried out two short-range missile tests in May.

Senior party official Kim Yong Chol, the North's counterpart to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in nuclear talks, was also sent to a labour camp, the paper said.

In April, South Korea's parliamentary intelligence committee said Kim Yong Chol had been censured over his handling of the Hanoi summit, despite the fact he had recently been named a member of the State Affairs Commission, a supreme governing body chaired by Kim Jong Un.

The Chosun Ilbo itself incorrectly reported in 2013 that Hyon Song Wol, head of the North's Samjiyon Orchestra, was executed by firing squad for distributing and watching pornographic material. And the Unification Ministry also mistakenly announced in February 2016 that Ri Yong Gil, chief of the general staff of the North Korean People's Army, had been executed.

News of the reported purge came as North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper, mouthpiece of the ruling party, on Thursday warned that officials who committed anti-party or anti-revolutionary acts would face the “stern judgement of the revolution”.

Four Afghans killed, four US troops wounded in Kabul suicide blast

Four Afghans killed, four US troops wounded in Kabul suicide blast
At least four Afghans were killed and four US troops lightly wounded when a car bomber attacked a US military convoy in Kabul on Friday, officials said.

The blast, which was claimed by the Taliban, occurred around 8:40am (0410 GMT) when an explosives-laden vehicle drove into the convoy that was travelling in eastern Kabul, according to interior ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahimi.

“Unfortunately in the attack, four of our countrymen were martyred and three others wounded — they were passers-by,” Rahimi said.

A spokesman for Resolute Support, the US-led NATO mission in Afghanistan, said four US service members had suffered minor injuries.

When US forces move about in Kabul, they typically travel in tall, heavily reinforced tactical vehicles that can provide good protection against bombs.

Known as MRAPs, for Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected, the vehicles are sturdy but present a very visible target.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the insurgent group was behind the attack, which he claimed to have killed “10 officers and soldiers of invading forces”.

The Taliban frequently exaggerate claims after attacks.

The blast came one day after a suicide bomber from the militant Islamic State group blew himself up outside an Afghan army military academy, killing at least six people.

It also followed a meeting between the Taliban and Afghan opposition figures in Moscow this week that yielded no tangible results.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had proposed a nationwide ceasefire at the start of the holy month of Ramadan, but the Taliban rejected the offer and violence continues apace across the country.

Muslims rally on Quds Day as US 'deal of century' looms

Muslims rally on Quds Day as US 'deal of century' looms
Millions of people in Iran and elsewhere are marking the International Quds Day to condemn a Middle East plan touted by US President Donald Trump as the "deal of the century".

Iranians took to the streets in massive numbers on Friday after Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei called this year's rallies more important than ever.

People in Tehran and other cities flocked to main streets to support Palestinians who are facing the dangerous prospect of a sellout of their rights through the US plan.

Demonstrators carried banners with slogans such as “Al-Quds is the eternal capital of Palestine” and “Death to America” as well as "No to the deal of the century".

President Hassan Rouhani, who attended the rallies in Tehran, said the "deal of the century" would be the "bankruptcy of the century" for its sponsors and "definitely will not come to a fruition".

He said Quds Day is "the day the confrontation of all Muslims with the world's aggressors and the event's message is that Palestine will be alive forever and al-Quds will remain for Muslims".

"We have no doubt that the ultimate victory will be for the righteous and Palestine and Palestine, and that the land of Palestine will be a safe place for Muslims, Christians and Jews," Rouhani added.

Similar rallies were planned across the world, including in many Muslim countries as well as in Europe and America, to show solidarity with the Palestinians and condemn Israeli atrocities and US policies.

In Iraq, television networks broadcast live footage from tens of thousands of people who were rallying in several cities to condemn "the deal of the century" and support the Palestinian people.

The International Quds Day is a legacy of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, who designated the day in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, the International Quds Day has been marked worldwide on the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar sent a grave warning to Israel ahead of Quds Day and used the opportunity to reject US President Donald Trump’s plan and a summit in Bahrain next month to promote it.

“Trump wants to sell al-Quds to the Zionists without paying a price,” Sinwar said. “I call him from here and say that I and the Palestinian people will be demonstrating along the [Gaza] fence in light of Quds Day in numbers that have not been seen before.”

Palestinian teenager shot dead

As the rallies began on Friday, a Palestinian teenager was shot dead by Israeli troops as he allegedly tried to enter Jerusalem al-Quds from the occupied West Bank.

The Palestinian health ministry said 16-year-old Abdullah Ghaith "died after he was shot by Israeli occupation soldiers close to Bethlehem and his heart and lungs were penetrated".

Another man, 21, was shot in the stomach at the same location and was being treated in hospital, the ministry said.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said troops had been trying to stop people breaking into Jerusalem al-Quds.

Palestinian media said the men were seeking to breach the Israeli fence that separates the West Bank and Jerusalem al-Quds to reach the Holy City to pray at the revered Al-Aqsa mosque on the last Friday of Ramadan.

Earlier Friday, Israel said a Palestinian stabbed and wounded two Israelis in East Jerusalem al-Quds before being shot dead.

One of the Israelis was in a critical condition and the other suffered serious wounds, Rosenfeld said. Police identified the alleged assailant as a 19-year-old Palestinian.

On Thursday, Sinwar warned to attack Tel Aviv and other cities with double the force if “the enemy dares to attack once again.”

“We will not sell al-Quds …We believe liberation of al-Quds will come soon,” he added.

Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner on Thursday met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem al-Quds to drum up support for the conference in Bahrain.

The Trump administration seeks to use the Bahrain meeting to bring Arab states traditionally opposed to the Israeli occupation of Palestinians lands into line.

"Mr Trump's son-in-law who is a young Jewish businessman has designed this plan. Trump himself has declared that Kushner loves Israel, and now this person wants to be in charge of the plan," Iran's Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said in Tehran.

Larijani said Washington's policy is to humiliate Muslims and force them into a difficult situation, denouncing the planned Bahrain summit an "ignominy" for Muslim countries.

He said while different aspects of the deal is not clear yet, one definite prospect is to do away for good with the issue of returning 6 million refugees to their homeland.

"To realize this goal, America is about arrange an economic deal and get its money from the miserable Persian Gulf countries. There is also the talk of making the Noble Quds the capital of the occupying regime and a village the capital of Palestine."

Sinwar warned on Thursday, “Anyone who deals with the issue of al-Quds is an enemy to us, and we have no dialogue with him."

"I call upon the leaders of the Arab countries – if you want to keep your seats, you have no choice but to choose our option, the option of liberating Palestine,” he added.

Chairman FBR terms tax system ‘highly dangerous’ in letter to PM Imran

Chairman FBR terms tax system ‘highly dangerous’ in letter to PM Imran
Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman Syed Shabbar Zaidi has termed the country’s tax system highly dangerous for the economy.

He wrote a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan drawing his attention to the faltering system of taxation.

Painting a grim picture of the current tax collection system, Zaidi said it is not sustainable for the coming generations because of the low level of tax collection which is even less than 10 per cent of tax-to-GDP ratio.

He said tax revenue is being generated through indirect taxes, adding a large number of people didn’t want to be part of the system.

Zaidi lamented less than 2 million people file tax returns, which accounts for just one per cent of the total population. 90 per cent of a total of 3.1 million traders are out of the tax net, he added.

Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Imran Khan in a video message appealed to the nation to pay taxes.

The prime minister said, “I am here to discuss a very critical matter with the people of Pakistan, only 1% of the population is filing taxes and bearing the weight of the other 99%.”

“If you do not pay your taxes then we can’t help rebuild the country, we can’t work on hospitals, schools and basic infrastructure due to lack of tax collection,” said the PM.

World Cup 2019: West Indies outshines Pakistan by eight wickets

west indies win by eight wickets
Pakistan’s scored 105 runs against West Indies in its World Cup opener at the Trent bridge on Friday, that has been chased by opponents easily in lost of only two wickets.

The Sarfraz men played only 21.4 overs of the innings as Jason Holder picked three wickets, Andre Russel took two and Sheldon Cottrell bagged one wicket. Mohammad Hafeez with 16 and Wahab Riaz (18) were the only other batsmen who reached double figures.

The score has been all time second lowest score in the World Cup while the lowest is 74 against England in the famous 1992 World Cup. This is also Pakistan’s lowest total against West Indies in the World Cup. Previous was 160 back in 2015.

Pakistan lost its top order in a brief span in their opening match at the Trent Bridge, Nottingham. All-rounder Andre Russell exposed Pakistan´s fragile batting with two wickets in the space of 12 balls to give West Indies an early advantage.

Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman were the highest run getter from the Pakistan side as they both scored 22.

Wahab Riaz and Muhammad Aamir offered little resistance in the last wicket partnership, however, the partnership was broken on 22 runs - interestingly it was the highest partnership of Pakistan in the match.

West Indian fast bowler Oshane Thomas with his phenomenal 4-27 spell scripted a shambolic collapse of Pakistan batting line up as he played a vital role in sending the Champions Trophy winner packing on 105. The Sarfraz men played only 21.4 overs of the innings as Jason Holder picked three wickets, Andre Russel took two and Sheldon Cottrell bagged one wicket.

Opposition stage protest against Ali Muhammad’s diatribe

Opposition stage protest against Ali Muhammad’s diatribe
The National Assembly’s session on Friday was adjourned after members of the opposition staged a protest against Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan’s diatribe against MNAs Mohsin Dawar and Ali Wazir.

Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri announced the adjournment as parliamentarians from both sides came face-to-face on the assembly floor after Khan’s scathing criticism which included certain unparliamentary terms of the two Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) leaders.

The state minister, while responding to a question, accused the two MNAs of harbouring anti-Pakistan sentiments and questioned their loyalty to the country.

Khan accused Dawar and Wazir of being “touts” of Afghanistan’s intelligence agency, the National Directorate of Security, and called for their expulsion as members of Pakistan’s Parliament.

His provocative comments drew a sharp response from the opposition benches as Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leaders, including Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, stood up to register their protest midway through Khan’s address.

The situation soon escalated as lawmakers from other opposition parties, including Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N), joined in the protest and surrounded the speaker’s dais.

The Ruet': Fawad Chaudhry announces launch of moonsighting mobile app

the Ruet
Following the launch of Pakistan's first official moonsighting website, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday announced the availability of a mobile application which displays the various phases of, and other real-time information about, the moon.

The app, named 'The Ruet', is available on the Google Play store for download.

According to the description provided on Google Play for the app, "The Ruet is a utility and information application related to moon and sighting of moon in Pakistan by Ministry of Science and Technology."

The main features of the app listed on the store are:

Current phase and age of the moon.
Islamic Hijri Calendar.
Setting location manually to any coordinates in Pakistan.
New moon details by Islamic months.
Moon phases calendar.
Moon, Sun and all major planets' positions on the interactive sky simulation.
The app's 'Phases' feature showcasing the phase of the moon on the chosen date. — Google Play store
Earlier this week, Chaudhry had announced the launch of the website, pakmoonsighting.pk, by the science and technology ministry "to halt the moonsighting controversy" that rears its head in the country every year prior to religious festivals.

The minister took the initiative for developing the website and the app after disagreeing with the way the moon was sighted by the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee.

He said the way of sighting the moon by Islamic schools of thought of Imam Hambal and Imam Shaafai was different. “Imam Hambal supports physical sighting of moon while Imam Shaafai recommends scientific ways for it.”

Chaudhry had also questioned the wisdom of spending large sums of money on moonsighting every year after the National Assembly was informed recently that an amount of Rs3.06 million was spent on the sighting of the moon for Muharram, Ramazan, Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha last year.

He had said that it was time science and technology were utilised to end the controversy.

Britain may not have made final decision on Huawei and 5G

Britain not yet made a final decision
Britain may not have made a final decision on allowing China’s Huawei a restricted role in building parts of its 5G network, US President Donald Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton said on Thursday.

The Trump administration, which has sanctioned Huawei and tried to block it buying US goods, has told allies not to use its 5G technology and equipment because of fears it would allow China to spy on sensitive communications and data.

Britain’s National Security Council, chaired by Prime Minister Theresa May, met to discuss Huawei last month and a decision was made to block Huawei from all core parts of the 5G network but to give it restricted access to non-core parts.

A final decision by the British cabinet of senior ministers was due to have happened in recent weeks but May’s pledge to step down as prime minister has stalled the process, sources said. She is expected to be out of office by the end of July.

When asked if the United States would like the next British leader to take a tougher stance on Huawei, Bolton said discussions with London were continuing but that Trump would probably raise it when he visits next week.

“I’m not sure that this decision has reached the prime ministerial level in final form. I mean we are still talking,” Bolton told reporters in London. “People are talking back and forth.” “Everybody is catching up to the dangers posed, especially in 5th-generation telecommunications systems, by equipment from Huawei and potentially others that can allow foreign governments a back door into telecommunications systems,” he said.

5G, which will offer much faster data speeds and become the foundation stone of many industries and networks, is seen as one of the biggest innovations since the birth of the internet itself a generation ago.

In what some have compared to the Cold War arms race, the United States is worried 5G dominance would give a competitor such as China an advantage Washington is not ready to accept.

“WOBBLY”: Huawei, founded in 1987 by a former engineer in China’s People’s Liberation Army, denies it spies for Beijing, says it complies with the law and that the United States is trying to smear it because Western companies are falling behind.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told Britain on a visit this month that it needed to change its attitude towards China and Huawei, casting the world’s second largest economy as a threat to the West similar to that once posed by the Soviet Union.

“Now is not the time for either of us to go wobbly,” Pompeo said in a speech on the so-called special relationship, paraphrasing what former prime minister Margaret Thatcher once famously told late US President George H.W. Bush.

Britain has said it will announce the findings of a review into 5G suppliers to parliament once the work has been completed, though May’s imminent departure from office has slowed the process.

World No Tobacco Day being observed today

World No Tobacco Day being observed today
World No Tobacco Day is being observed on Friday (May 31).

The day aims to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure, and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form.

The focus of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is on "tobacco and lung health."

The campaign will increase awareness on: the negative impact that tobacco has on people’s lung health, from cancer to chronic respiratory disease, the fundamental role lungs play for the health and well-being of all people.

The campaign also serves as a call to action, advocating for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption and engaging stakeholders across multiple sectors in the fight for tobacco control.

Lung cancer

Tobacco smoking is the primary cause for lung cancer, responsible for over two thirds of lung cancer deaths globally. Second-hand smoke exposure at home or in the work place also increases risk of lung cancer. Quitting smoking can reduce the risk of lung cancer: after 10 years of quitting smoking, risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker.

Chronic respiratory disease

Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a condition where the build-up of pus-filled mucus in the lungs results in a painful cough and agonising breathing difficulties. The risk of developing COPD is particularly high among individuals who start smoking at a young age, as tobacco smoke significantly slows lung development. Tobacco also exacerbates asthma, which restricts activity and contributes to disability. Early smoking cessation is the most effective treatment for slowing the progression of COPD and improving asthma symptoms.

TV drama Cheekh is going south and only decent acting is propping it up

TV drama Cheekh is going south and only decent acting is propping it up
Someone please explain to me why Pakistani writers love to drag a story until they lose the purpose of said story? Why is the overdose of depression and tragedy so necessary?

Cheekh, a drama started out with a pretty sound script wanting to make a difference and wanting to give women a voice – yet somewhere after episode 15, it lost track of its goals. At this point Cheekh might as well have been titled 'Aansoo'. Don’t get me wrong; there are some good scenes and lines, but they are few and far in between.

A little recap

Cheekh is the story of Mannat (Saba Qamar) getting justice for her friend Nayab's murder (played by Ushna Shah) that her [Mannat's] brother-in-law, Wajih commits. Mannat is married to Shayaan, Wajih’s older brother. The case is finally in court and hearings have begun.

Wajih (Bilal Abbas Khan) goes to ultimate extremes and crosses many lines to hurt Mannat emotionally and physically, with no regard for his own brother or for the consequences. From uploading a video stating Mannat is getting back at him because he rejected her, to having her mother’s house vandalised and locking her up in her own storeroom, Wajih does whatever he can to harm Mannat.

Mannat and Shayaan (Emmad Irfani) learn they are expecting but again, because of Wajih, she unfortunately loses the baby. Wajih's lawyer (Shabbir Jaan) not only encourages all of this, but presses him to do more to scare and break Mannat. He lies in court, shows a forged suicide note by Nayab, and even gets the inspector to lie on the stand.

Yawar, the older brother (Aijaz Aslam) is getting tired of Wajih’s tactics but still does nothing to stop him. We learn that it is he who is unable to have kids and not his wife, Shahwar (Maira Khan). He had reports faked five years ago cause his ego is bigger than his conscience and he is a weak, weak man. When Shahwar finds out the truth, she pretends that she is expecting and all hell breaks loose when he finally acknowledges that he can’t have kids and then… wait for it… he divorces her! This perhaps is the most preposterous end to that relationship, and I’ll discuss why.

Haya’s (Azekah Daniel) character has a random epiphany after Wajih tells her he lied about Mannat having feelings for him. She still doesn’t believe that her brother killed Nayab, but not only does she apologize to Shayaan and Mannat, but also helps Nayab’s family.

Ramzan Ahmed (Nayab’s father, played by Noor-ul-Hassan) loses his job and house and end up on the street thanks to Wajih and his thugs. Shariq sees them at a mazaar and calls Haya after bringing them home with him. Haya arranges for a house and takes financial responsibility for the entire family.

In episode 21, Mannat realizes that not only did this fight take everything from her, but also from her husband. It’s also the episode where Mannat’s mother continuously gets threatening phone calls telling her to stop her daughter from going to court or they’ll kill her.

That’s it ladies and gentlemen, the last four paragraphs are episodes 15-21. I have no clue as to why writer Zanjabeel Asim has dragged the script so much. There are numerous unnecessary scenes like Ramzan’s wife leaving him after he loses his job and then coming back – only to end up on the streets (by the way his wife’s makeup was pretty perfect for someone who doesn’t even have food to eat).

And the interaction between Haya and Shariq where he throws a glass in front of her car, even though the interaction just before that was quite pleasant and polite... that scene was completely out of place, even for a flashback. The scene where the househelp Lalu is framed for stealing Wajih’s phone and gets beat up, only to have Yawar apologize to him justifying it as Wajih under stress was also ridiculous.

But one of the most important scenes that absolutely horrified me was when Yawar divorces Shahwar. Don’t get me wrong, the divorce was absolutely necessary. Shahwar was lied to and disrespected for 5 years, made to feel “incomplete,” and Yawar treated her like he was doing her a favour by not asking for any kids even though he was the one with the medical condition.

But for the scene to have an impact or change narratives, Shahwar should have been the one to leave Yawar and ask for a divorce. This would at least have preserved her respect.

As a writer, you can tell whatever story you want – you have a chance to change thoughts and narratives, so why not? Why must one female be humiliated to the core just so another can somewhat fight?

Cheekh is supposed to be a story about a woman (Mannat) getting justice for her friend’s attempted rape and murder by her brother in law. She goes against everyone to do this with the only support being her husband. But by making every other woman in the drama appear weak, the show seems to be suggesting that if one woman seeks justice, all other women will pay the price for this.

Udaari dealt with this issue a lot more sensibly and with much more sensitivity even though within that drama, a massive difference of class and resources existed between abuser and abused. No one lost anything because of the fight. The women all stood as one to get justice — which they did. It was hard, but other women weren't humiliated to get justice. This proves that the misogyny shown in Cheekh just isn't necessary.

Also unnecessary is the plot point that shows Mannat losing her unborn baby. In choosing this, the writer is (again) saying women should just be quiet or lose everything they have if they want to fight. The overdose of tragedy and depression that Mannat and Shayaan have to go through is ridiculous.

There were some good scenes though. All the scenes between Mannat and Shayan are actually pretty great, especially the one where she hears him crying in the bathroom and the conversation they have afterwards is very real. For once, a husband has been shown to not only stand by his wife, but to also be sensitive and real about what he himself goes through after the loss of an unborn baby. Men usually aren’t shown like that in Pakistani dramas, so I do give the writer points for that.

Emad Irfani brilliantly portrays Shayaan in every manner. Not once does he tremble or lose sight of his character. He is made to go through a variety of different emotions and he does it all, flawlessly. The only other person I have seen who is able to do this is Fahad Mustafa!

Bilal Abbas Khan – this guy rocks as a psychopath. Wajih is relentless – he is calculated, he doesn’t at all care about who he hurts, or the consequences afterwards, and he is even there to rub their noses in it. If he were to sell his soul to the devil, the devil would give it back! I haven’t yet seen a psychotic character like this in Pakistani dramas and Bilal Abbas Khan aces it. There’s a scene where Shayan confronts Wajih saying “agli dafa waar karna hai to mere saamne karna, peeche nahi,” and he instantly without thinking says “done!” This guys is phenomenal!

Saba Qamar is as close as anyone can get to being compared to Marina Khan. She too has to go through a variety of emotions and is perfect in all of them.

The one person I’m really surprised about is Aijaz Aslam. I was never a fan and always thought he was OTT, but he fits into Yawar’s character like a glove. Yawar is this confused and weak egomaniac and for some reason, he has me feeling for him at times. It’s a very complex character and Aijaz Aslam does complete justice to it.

As flawed as the plot is, Cheekh's script does allow for layered characters.

In terms of direction, Badar Mehmood does a decent job with the script he has. He extracts complete perfection from his characters and gives us a great visual. The editing isn’t as up to par as it has been previously either as 21 episodes could easily have been delivered in 14-15 episodes.

I believe there are 5-6 episodes left so hopefully they’ll be better than the last few episodes. I really wish ARY had presented Cheekh in double episodes – it would have been more tolerable then.

England start 2019 World Cup campaign with 104-run win over South Africa

England start 2019 World Cup campaign with 104-run win over South Africa
England inflicted a heavy 104-run defeat over South Africa on Thursday in the opening match of the 2019 World Cup at Kennington Oval in London.

Chasing a 308-run target, South Africa were dealt an early blow when opener Hashim Amla had to retire hurt after copping a Jofra Archer bouncer.

Quinton de Kock (68) top scored for the visitors and Rassie van der Dussen chipped in with a 50 but no other batsmen did enough for the Africans to pose a serious threat to the hosts.

Archer was the star of the the show as he picked up three wickets and bowled with hostile pace that troubled Faf du Plessis' men.

Ben Stokes was named the man of the match for his two-for coupled with an 89-run knock in the first innings.

Earlier, South Africa had restricted England to 311 for eight as the tournament hosts and favourites made a stuttering start in their quest to win the trophy for the first time.

Ben Stokes top-scored with 89, while England captain Eoin Morgan (57), Jason Roy (54) and Joe Root (51) all made fifties.

But England, who last year set a world record for the highest one-day international total of 481-6 and have often blown teams away with the bat, were repeatedly pegged back by a Proteas side who deployed the slower ball to good effect.

England, after Britain's Prince Harry officially opened the tournament, lost a wicket second ball before Roy and Root shared a stand of 106 that was equalled by Morgan and Stokes.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis, despite being without injured spearhead Dale Steyn, saw his decision to field rewarded in dramatic style when Imran Tahir struck with just the second ball of the match to dismiss Jonny Bairstow for a golden duck.

Normally it is a paceman who has the first spell.

But Du Plessis gave the ball to 40-year-old leg-spinner Tahir, the oldest player in the tournament, instead and a well-flighted delivery had Bairstow edging to wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock, with the Pakistan-born Tahir running off in a semi-circle — his familiar celebration.

Roy and Root were both in fine touch and England would have wanted at least one of them to go on to a big score. But from 107-1, England lost two wickets for four runs in four balls.

Roy flat-batted an intended pull off Andile Phehlukwayo to Du Plessis at mid-off before Root steered Rabada to backward point, where JP Duminy held a sharp catch.

Morgan, whose aggressive approach has been symbolic of England's rise to the top of the one-day international rankings after their woeful first-round exit at the 2015 World Cup, struck the first two sixes of the match off successive balls from fast bowler Lungi Ngidi.

The left-hander's drive over long-off was followed by a pull above long leg.

But having completed a run-a-ball fifty, Morgan's drive off Tahir (two for 61) was well caught low down by a diving Aiden Markram, running in from long-on.

Dangerman Jos Buttler fell for just 18 while left-hander Stokes, trying to break the shackles, saw his 79-ball knock end in the penultimate over when a reverse hit off Ngidi (three for 66) found Hashim Amla at third man.

Lineups: England: Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (captain), Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer.

South Africa: Hashim Amla, Quinton De Kock, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis (captain), Rassie van der Dussen, JP Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir.
