“Jail-like feeling’ was made in Kashmir after August 5, 2019: Moeed Yusuf

Moeed Yusuf
Special Assistant to Prime Minister on National Security Moeed Yusuf said India is trying to spread the narrative in occupied Kashmir that it has reached an agreement with Pakistan on the occupied Kashmir territory.

"India is spreading a narrative in occupied Kashmir that there has been an agreement on territory," Yusuf told reporters in Lahore on Saturday.

The SAPM, who was talking today media in the backdrop of his recent interview with Indian journalist Karan Thappar, said that he felt disappointed out of one of the feedbacks that he got.

“90% feedback said that it is the first time Pakistan gave a befitting response to India,” claimed Yusuf. He added that the feedback meant that Pakistan was presenting its case out of fear.

“What is there to fear have we stolen something? The stealing is being done by someone else,” said SAPM Yusuf. He added that what Indian the Narendra Modi-led government was doing in Kashmir should make them afraid.

He explained this was the approached that he had gone into the panel. He also added that Pakistan went in the interview and told India that its “basic message” was of peace.

Hurdles to peace

Yusuf also told the journalists that in his interview he told the Indian journalist what were the hurdles to the peace between Pakistan and India.

The SAPM said that a “jail-like feeling’ was made in Kashmir after August 5, 2019. He added that in the ongoing “military occupation” humans have been turned into animals.

“India is spreading a narrative in occupied Kashmir that there has been an agreement on Kashmir. That the chapter has closed and Pakistan is not serious,” said Yusuf.

The SAPM said that Pakistan has made its stance on Kashmir clear, adding that he also used the phrase “over my dead body” to make clear of Islamabad's stance on the occupied territory.

“What agreement can be there? There is only one [agreement possible]. That whatever measures you have taken should be finished and decision should be made according to UN resolutions,” said Yusuf

The SAPM said Pakistan was saying this because it knows “what the situation in Kashmir right now”. He added that “Kashmiris cannot even listen to India’s name” after the August 5, 2019 move by New Delhi.

“I told them that you have to reverse this. Not because of us but what is happening there,” said the SAPM.

“When you treat humans like animals then you will get a response and it is coming,” warned the SAPM, adding that it was better India walked away from its wishes and come to the table for talks.

12 people kills in Armenian military missiles at Ganja: Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict

Ganja: Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict
The conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia escalated after 12 people were killed when the Armenian military fired missiles at Ganja, injuring 40 as well, said the General Prosecutors of Azerbaijan said Saturday.

“Civilians are continued to be saved from the debris of destruction by emergency services,” Hikmet Hajiyev, assistant to the Azerbaijani president, said on Twitter.

"Treacherous and cruel missile attack of Armenia against civilians in Ganja is sign of weakness and desperation of Armenia's political-military leadership in the face of its defeat on battleground," Hajiyev said, condemning Armenia for deliberately targeting Azerbaijan's civilians.

"Two kids are among the dead. Emergency works are still going on. Armenia's terror and War Crimes continue,” Hajiyev said earlier on Twitter. “Armenia's foreign ministry in vile manner attempts to deny its state responsibility for this nefarious war crimes,” he said.

He said that preliminary reports pointed out to the destruction of as many as 20 houses due to the missile attack.

Turkey condemns Armenian attack
Condemning Armenia's attack, Turkey's ruling party spokesperson reiterated support for Azerbaijan.

“Armenia is killing civilians as a rogue state. It is carrying out brutal massacres. The murderers and their supporters are breaking the law. Attacks against Ganja are crimes against humanity,” Omer Celik said on Twitter.

He said that the attackers must not go unpunished and Armenia should be prosecuted for crimes. The official added that Armenia was killing women, children, elderly and civilians 'indiscriminately'.

Why are Armenia and Azerbaijan fighting?
Two ex-Soviet republics in the Caucasus, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, are engaged in a decades-long territorial dispute which has re-erupted with the heaviest clashes in years on Sunday.

Here are the key factors surrounding their conflict:

Nagorny Karabakh

At the heart of the standoff between Yerevan and Baku is the contested Nagorny Karabakh region.

The Soviet authorities merged the predominantly ethnic Armenian territory with Azerbaijan in 1921.

After the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, Armenian separatists seized it in a move supported by Yerevan.

An ensuing war left 30,000 dead and forced hundreds of thousands from their homes.

Despite a ceasefire mediated in 1994 by Russia, the United States, and France, peace negotiations struggle to move forward and fighting erupts frequently.

The latest clashes on Sunday saw Azerbaijan and Armenian separatists accuse each other of igniting the fighting that left both sides with casualties, including civilians.

It followed a flare-up along the border in July which claimed the lives of 17 soldiers from both sides.

In April 2016, some 110 people were killed in the most serious fighting in years.

Revolts and dynasty

Armenia has been rocked by political and economic instability since it gained independence from the former USSR.

The country's post-Soviet leadership repressed opposition to its rule, was accused of falsifying ballot results, and was largely beholden to the interests of Russia.

In the spring of 2018, mass street protests brought current Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to power. He has since cracked down on corruption and introduced popular judicial reforms.

Azerbaijan, on the Caspian Sea, has been under the authoritarian grip of a single-family since 1993.

Heydar Aliyev, a former officer of the Soviet security services, the KGB, ruled the country with an iron fist until October 2003. He handed over power to his son, Ilham, weeks before his death.

Like his father, Ilham has quashed all opposition to his rule and in 2017 made his wife, Mehriban, the country´s first vice president.

Russia and Turkey

Turkey, with ambitions to be a regional powerbroker in the Caucasus, has thrown its weight behind oil-rich and Turkic-speaking Azerbaijan.

Their alliance is fuelled by a mutual mistrust of Armenia, and Ankara routinely issues strongly-worded statements in support of Baku's ambitions to reclaim Nagorny Karabakh.

Yerevan harbours hostility towards Turkey over the massacres of some 1.5 million Armenians by Turkey under the Ottoman Empire during World War I.

More than 30 countries have recognised the killings as genocide, though Ankara fiercely disputes the term.

Russia, which maintains close ties with Armenia, is the major powerbroker in the region. It leads the Collective Security Treaty Organisation military alliance of ex-Soviet countries that includes Armenia.

Yerevan relies on Russian support and military guarantees because its defence budget is overshadowed by Azerbaijan´s spending on arms.

Oil and diaspora

Azerbaijan has recently begun leveraging oil revenues as part of a bid to overhaul its image in the West.

Baku has invested in massive sponsorship deals including with the Euro 2020 football championship, which was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Baku was due to host matches this year and Azerbaijan has held Formula 1 Grand Prix races since 2016.

Azerbaijan has also tried to pitch itself to European countries as an alternative energy supplier to Russia.

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian, the late singer Charles Aznavour, and pop star and actress Cher all trace their roots to Armenia.

Some have appointed themselves unofficial ambassadors, like Kardashian who has been outspoken on the issue of the Armenian genocide.

US election 2020: Joe Biden leads in TV ratings battle with Trump

US Election 2020
For the one-hour period that both Trump and Biden were on air, Biden averaged 14.3 million to Trump’s 13.5 million.

According to Nielsen rating data released on Friday, Biden averaged 15.1 million viewers during Thursday night's 90-minute discussion on Walt Disney Co's ABC broadcast network. Trump pulled in 13.5 million for his 60-minute event across Comcast Corp's broadcaster NBC and the company's MSNBC and CNBC cable channels.

The primetime town halls were scheduled after the cancellation of a debate that had been set for the same time. Trump pulled out of the debate after it was changed to a virtual format.

During his event on ABC, Biden attacked Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic. On NBC, Trump defended his administration’s response to the virus and his own personal conduct.

NBC was criticized for scheduling Trump opposite Biden after ABC had already set its event, forcing voters to choose which candidate to watch live. Trump often brags about the size of his television audiences.

In some markets, the events did not compete directly. In Los Angeles, for example, ABC aired the Biden event live at 5 p.m. Pacific while NBC broadcast a recording of Trump at 8 pm Pacific.

KP govt to spend Rs1.2 billion on organising festivals in the merged tribal areas

Tribal Areas Festivals
The newly-established Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cultural and Tourism Authority will sponsor the festivals, an international cycle rally, a motorbike rally, winter season adventure sports tourism and other cultural activities in the erstwhile Fata.

These activities will be funded from the multi-billion rupees Accelerated Implementation Programme, a joint venture of the federal and provincial governments. The authority has yet to start homework in the area for facilitating tourists.

The Provincial Working Development Party recently approved Rs494 million for holding festivals during the current financial year alone and okayed PC-I of the project in this regard.

An outlay of Rs1.2 billion has been allocated in the annual development programme 2020-21 for the promotion of tourism in the erstwhile Fata.

Ex-minister says funds for non-productive events a case of bad governance, financial mismanagement

Former federal minister Hamidullah Jan Afridi, who belongs to Khyber tribal district, said the government instead of squandering money on organising festivals should build infrastructure and provide basic facilities in these areas.

“This is an example of bad governance and financial mismanagement to spend cash resources on non-productive activities and publicity,” he said, adding that electricity, drinking water and communication network were not available in some of the areas, which were being opened for tourism.

Abundant with natural beauty, rich culture and traditions, the tribal districts virtually do not have basic infrastructure including proper road network to tourist attraction sites, accommodation, electricity and internet.

The tribal districts, which were kept out of bounds for more than a century for outsiders, have only few government-owned small rest houses and cottages that have been occupied by officials since the area was merged with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Groups of domestic tourists who visit tribal districts for excursion have to stay overnight in the hujras of local people because of non availability of hotels, inns or guest houses there.

Hamidullah Jan said the residents of Tirah Valley had got weary of the uninvited visitors but they had to extend hospitality to them due to traditional and cultural values.

He said the poor people couldn’t sustain to provide free accommodation to them.

The residents said a large number of tourists had been visiting Tirah valley since the construction of the metal road few years ago.

The tourism department has yet to maintain the data of tourist attraction and historical sites in the tribal districts.

The defunct Fata Development Authority had launched a project in 2007 for identification of tourist sites and Lahore-based consultancy firm was hired at Rs1.6 million to conduct study. This study did not see light of the day.

Two years to the merger, the tourism department has yet to identify tourism sites in tribal districts.

Spokesperson for the tourism department told Dawn that the site identification study in tribal district was in the pipeline.

He said a big chunk of funds had been allocated for the establishment and development of tourist destinations, tourism information centre and protection and management of archeological sites.

Officials said the project had been designed to increase the flow of domestic tourists to the merged districts besides equipping the tourism corporation in term of creating enabling environment for tourism promotion.

Under the PC-I of the project, an amount of Rs306 million would be spent on tourist festivals in all seven merged districts, jeep rally, cycle rally, motorbike rally and winter sports tourism in three years. An amount of Rs30 million will be spent on holding festivals in every district in three years.

In addition, Rs188 million, including Rs69 million for the promotion of tourism, has been allocated for advertisement in media, feasibility of adventure tourism, marketing videography and social media projection, hiring of small-scale consultancies and sponsorship for small scale promotion of tourist festivals and tourist events.

Home Minister claims India is promoting terrorism in Balochistan

Home Minister Balochistan Ziaullah Langove
The minister condemned the Ormara attack, in which 14 security personnel were martyred, and said that they had sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

He said that Pakistan’s enemy India was directly involved in a conspiracy to destroy peace in Balochistan and to implement its nefarious designs, it was providing financial support to the militants to spread anarchy in the country.

Replying to a question, he said that the security forces were chasing the miscreants involved in the Ormara incident and would bring them to justice soon.

Mr Langove said that it was very difficult to simultaneously launch operations across Balochistan, but security forces would continue their efforts for peace and order in the province.

He said: “We are proud of our brave security forces. They have been struggling hard to eradicate the menace of terrorism.”

Responding to another question, he said that through such terrorist activities, the terrorists sought failure of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, but they would not succeed in their vicious designs.

No one can be declared a traitor, says IHC

Islamabad High Court
No Pakistani can be declared a traitor.

Stated Chief Justice Athar Minallah noticed issues to secretaries of the interior and information ministries, the DG Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and the Islamabad IGP on Friday.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) was hearing a case regarding journalist Fakhar Durrani, affiliated with The News, who was labelled a traitor and allegedly harassed by some elements. The court called on government institutions to stop harassing the journalist.

During the hearing, lawyer Imran Shafiq, representing Durrani, said his client has been accused of being a traitor and having ties with Indian intelligence agency RAW. To this, Justice Minallah asked what charges have been framed against him.

The petitioner’s lawyer replied that there are no formal charges but his name is being associated with a former officer of the Indian Army.

"These are all baseless allegations, but they have put in danger the lives of the journalist and members of his family," he said. He also has no links with the data registered with the SECP, the lawyer said, adding that his client had written a story on the dual citizenship of Federal Water Resources Minister Faisal Vawda and that had irked him.

Brexit brinkmanship: Johnson says prepare for no-deal, cancels trade talks

Brexit brinkmanship: Johnson says prepare for no-deal, cancels trade talks
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Friday it was now time to prepare for a no-trade deal Brexit unless the European Union fundamentally changed course, bluntly telling Brussels that there was no point in continuing the negotiations.

A tumultuous “no deal” finale to the United Kingdom’s five-year Brexit crisis would sow chaos through the delicate supply chains that stretch across Britain, the EU and beyond - just as the economic hit from the coronavirus pandemic worsens.

At what was supposed to be the “Brexit summit” on Thursday, the EU delivered an ultimatum: it said it was concerned by a lack of progress and called on London to yield on key sticking points or see a rupture of ties with the bloc from Jan. 1.

“I have concluded that we should get ready for January 1 with arrangements that are more like Australia’s based on simple principles of global free trade,” Johnson said.

“With high hearts and with complete confidence, we will prepare to embrace the alternative and we will prosper mightily as an independent free trading nation, controlling and setting our own laws,” he added.

EU heads of government, concluding a summit in Brussels on Friday, rushed to say that they wanted a trade deal and that talks would continue, though not at any price.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Europe’s most powerful leader, said it would be best to get a deal and that compromises on both sides would be needed. French President Emmanuel Macron said Britain needed a Brexit deal more than the 27-nation EU.

Johnson’s spokesman said talks were now over and there was no point in the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier coming to London next week barring a change in approach. [L8N2H747X]

However, Barnier and his British counterpart David Frost had agreed to speak again early next week, Downing Street said.
The pound oscillated to Brexit news, dropping a cent against the U.S. dollar on Johnson’s remarks but then rising before falling again on his spokesman’s comments.

Sahibzada Jahangir with his team arrived at Hasan’s office directly and then both sides engaged in a shouting match which lasted for three hours. Both sides accused each other of corruption, theft, nepotism and incompetence.

Sahibzada Jahangir said: "PTI has joined this protest because various political workers in the UK came here. They include lawyers, nurses and other professionals. Nawaz Sharif is a convicted prime minister and sitting in London. He should go back to Pakistan because he had come to the UK on medical grounds and he must return now. Imran Khan said that he would make Nawaz cry, we are here to fulfill that promise."

A heavy contingent of police remained present outside Stanhope House.

Safina Khan, who is the President of the PML-N UK Social Media team said: "These PTI workers came to protest outside Nawaz Sharif's office but they are crying now. PML-N workers have overwhelmed them.

"These are all paid goons who have been paid money by the Government of Pakistan to come here and cause a havoc outside Nawaz Sharif's office. Now look you can see yourself that PML-N workers have won the show in Gujranwala and also in London."

Kyrgyz President Sooronbai Jeenbekov resigned on Thursday, leaving power in the hands of a nationalist rival whose supporters freed him from jail last week.

The swift transition appears to put an end to more than a week of turmoil and unrest that followed a disputed election.

Sadyr Japarov, 51, who was named prime minister this week, told cheering supporters that he had taken on the powers of the presidency, following the resignation of Jeenbekov and of the parliament speaker, who would otherwise have been next in line.

“Today, (speaker Kanatbek) Isayev signed a resignation letter. All presidential powers have fully passed to me today,” Japarov said.

Hours earlier, Jeenbekov became the third president of the small Central Asian nation since 2005 to be toppled in a popular uprising. In a statement, he said he was resigning to prevent violence, which he said would have been inevitable if protesters carried out a threat to march on his compound.

“I do not want to go down in Kyrgyzstan’s history as a president who shed blood and shot at his own citizens.” Kyrgyzstan’s constitution requires a new election for president within three months. The rules appear to bar Japarov, as interim president, from standing again.

Kyrgyzstan has been in turmoil since the Oct 4 parliamentary vote, which the opposition rejected after Jeenbekov’s allies were declared the winners.

Since the election, opposition supporters have taken to the streets and seized government buildings, prompting the authorities to annul the vote.

Japarov who was serving a sentence for attempting to kidnap another politician during unrest in 2013, was sprung from prison by his supporters last week. A judge then threw out his conviction, and parliamentary factions picked him to be premier.

Jeenbekov announced last week that he planned to resign, but later said he would stay in office until a new election was held. Japarov rejected the delay and pressed him to resign immediately.

“The president couldn’t hold out. He’s very weak. No spirit,” Dastan Bekeshev, a lawmaker who supports neither Jeenbekov nor Japarov, said.

“It’s not clear what happens next, nobody can tell what is going to happen.”

Kyrgyzstan hosts both a Russian military base and a large Canadian-owned gold mine. Moscow, which considers the former Soviet territory its sphere of influence, had said it would be responsible for ensuring stability.

Russia said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had spoken by phone to his Kyrgyz counterpart, Ruslan Kazakbayev, and promised to assist “legitimate authorities” to stabilise the situation.

Auto manufacturers seek tax relief to bring down prices

Auto manufacturers seek tax relief to bring down prices
Local auto manufacturers have asked the government to cut down taxes to reduce prices of cars and off-road vehicles in the country.

The concerns were shared in a meeting organised by the government with local manufacturers seeking proposals to help reduce the prices of locally-manufactured vehicles.

With the demand and supply balance tilting again in favor of the former, premiums charged by showrooms have increased prices for buyers.

“We have informed the government that there were around 40pc taxes on each car and off-road vehicle. The best possible way to reduce prices would be through abolishment of some taxation on new cars being assembled in the country,” said Indus Motor Company (IMC) Chief Executive Ali Asghar Jamali.

Talking to media on Thursday, he said that government and auto sector will review vehicle prices in December as they are going to negotiate a new auto policy.

“Auto sector foresees a promising future and aims to be the biggest contributor to the government’s macroeconomic goals, provided, a predictable and long-term auto policy is in place,” Jamali said.

He said that other issues will also be taken up in the upcoming meeting with regards to the demand of the Ministry of Science and Technology for localised testing of standards.

“We do not have any objection to the testing of parts and the whole vehicle even the crash test — but does anybody has the facility and the qualified personnel to do it,” Jamali said while adding that “apart from establishing the standards the government should also establish the testing labs — because we have already adopted the Japanese standards.”

He said that it would be unfair that the government department may charge fee just to issue a certificate and the tests are conducted by the company abroad.

Similarly, he added that the existing auto industry has objections to the new electric vehicle policy.

“We demand that tax relief should be given to all assemblers for the import of car batteries and motors — and not for the import of whole car,” he said.

“This way, we too will start producing electric vehicles and there will be a level-playing field for all players,” added Jamali.

He added that the auto sector was the largest manufacturing industry which was plunged into a deep crisis during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

NRO is "easy way", but it is the "path to destruction": PM Imran Khan

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Hitting out at the Opposition today, Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that giving an 'NRO' — relief from corruption cases — to his opponents is an “easy path” for him to take, but it is the “path to destruction”.

“We have to make difficult decisions and difficult decisions take us forward,” PM Imran Khan said while addressing an inauguration ceremony at NUST, Islamabad.

He said the country was "going in the right direction", and that giving an NRO at this moment would be the easy way out from the difficulties he faces as premier.

"Many times in life, we have the choice of walking two different paths. We are encouraged to take the easy way out," he said.

“You wake up in the morning and you have all the dacoits gathered up against you, and [you want to] go for the easy way and compromise,” he said, perhaps hinting at the political choices he faces these days.

The “easy way” is to “forgive them all and give an NRO”.

“Our lives will also become easy. We will do speeches in parliament and three or four years will go by. But, this is the path to destruction,” he warned.

He added that the path to betterment is never easy and people therefore have to make “difficult decisions” that, in the future, define them.

“Centre for Middle East & Africa” inaugurates at Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad

The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad
The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) held the inauguration of its Centre for Middle East & Africa (CMEA) today.

Mr. Sohail Mahmood, Foreign Secretary of Pakistan was the Chief Guest, while H.E. Prof. Julius Kibet Bitok, High Commissioner of the Republic of Kenya & Dean of African Countries’ Ambassadors in Pakistan also made remarks on the occasion.

The newly established Centre at the ISSI aims to promote and provide quality research, analysis, policy input and dialogue on issues related to the Middle East and Africa. CMEA’s functions include observing latest developments, contributing in-depth research and analysis, organizing and promoting dialogue and debate on political, security, economic, and social aspects of the Middle East and Africa countries, with the focus on relevance for Pakistan.

During his remarks, Mr. Sohail Mahmood stated that the Middle East is one of the most critical areas in the world today. Its strategic significance stems from its flow as the major energy supply in the world. The people of Pakistan, share strong linkages with the people of the Middle East region. There are no issues where Pakistan has not stood shoulder to shoulder with the Muslim countries, he said. The economic dimension of the Middle East is also significant for Pakistan. An example is how the region has one of the largest concentrations of Pakistani workers which play a significant role both for their home and host country.

Both Pakistan and Africa have been successful against their colonizers, which entails a natural meeting of the two sides. Both Pakistan and Africa also have a strong tradition of mutual support. He was of the view that with the Pak-Africa conference in Nairobi, Pakistan and Africa have embarked on a new journey. Moreover, under its Engage Africa policy, the Government of Pakistan is shoring up its diplomatic presence in this important part of the world and focusing on both connectivity and complementarity. He concluded by expressing that the establishment of CMEA is both timely and beneficial and ensured the support of the foreign office in its future endeavours.

H.E. Prof. Julius Kibet Bitok voiced his happiness with the steps the Government of Pakistan has taken to engage with Africa. A classic example was the recently held Pakistan- Africa Trade and Development Conference held in Nairobi in January 2020, which he called a landmark development in the ‘Engage Africa’ policy of Pakistan. The conference hosted over a hundred business men and women from Pakistan. He said that there was no better time to forge better and deeper partnership especially in the backdrop of Pakistan’s ‘Engage Africa’ policy coupled together with the new African Continental Free Trade Agreement. He said he looked forward to future interactions and visits at the highest levels of government. These, he said were engines of effective engagement. He expressed his hope that the Centre will be able to find solutions to issues that affect the ME&A region, and further build on the Africa- Pakistan relationship.

Ms. Amina Khan, Director CMEA, in her introductory remarks underscored the importance of studying different regions and countries in order to better understand their respective challenges and responsibilities. She said that in the case of Pakistan, it is important that research becomes focused on regions that are significant for Pakistan’s foreign policy, and also on those that are ignored despite repeated slogans of their high potential, such as the ME&A region which is of immense importance for Pakistan. She concluded that “We at CMEA envisage to expand our work and engage with similar organizations and individuals from around the globe through research, webinars/conferences on issues related to the Middle Eastern and African regions with the aim to become a Centre of excellence.”

Earlier, in his welcome remarks, the Director General ISSI, Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry stated that the work of all the Centres of Excellence at ISSI is driven from the priority to improve the quality of research and analysis both inside and outside the ISSI. He said that the aim was to create a synergy between research and dialogue in order to be relevant to the Government, people and the national interests of Pakistan.

CMEA has a unique significance for Pakistan as the Middle East is a region where Pakistan has huge stakes, especially in the Gulf, necessitating a detailed study of the geo-politics of the region. While engaging with Africa is also one of the top priorities for the Government of Pakistan. He hoped that CMEA would deliver on this front and work closely with the government in this regard.

Italy reopens ‘Decreto Flussi’ work visas for Pakistanis

Italy Pakistan relationship
The Italian government has relaunched seasonal and non-seasonal work visas for Pakistani nationals under its annual schedule of work visa called ‘Decreto Flussi’ for the year 2020-21.

Over 30,000 work visas would be issued by the Italian government to the nationals from a few non-EU countries, including Pakistan. Pakistani workers in agriculture, tourism, construction and freight forwarding sectors can avail this opportunity, according to details transmitted by the Pakistan Embassy in Italy to the Board of Investment on Thursday.

Pakistan has been included in this category of visas after the lag of two years as a result of sustained efforts by its embassy in Rome.

Ambassador Jauhar Saleem said on the occasion that Italy hosts the largest Pakistani diaspora in the European Union following Brexit, which has sent over $142 million in remittances in 2019-2020.

He said that the Pakistani community in Italy had been demanding Pakistan’s re-inclusion in the list of countries eligible for seasonal workers visa, ever since the facility was withdrawn two years ago. The demand for Pakistani workers in the Italian market is on the rise consistently, especially in the agricultural sector, Ambassador Saleem said.

It is expected that under the current scheme, hundreds of Pakistani workers would obtain gainful employment in Italy.

Earlier, the Pakistan Embassy also facilitated thousands of undocumented Pakistani workers in Italy to seek legal status through a scheme launched by the Italian government in June 2020 to regularise the undocumented foreign workers.

Over 18,000 Pakistanis applied for regularisation under that scheme. Despite the second wave of Covid-19, which has seen a record number of fresh cases in recent days, the Pakistan Embassy has kept its consular section, both in Rome and Milan, fully functional so as to facilitate the community in benefiting from the growing job opportunities in Italy.

India's Rahul Gandhi praises Pakistan controlled COVID19 pandemic better than India

India's Rahul Ghandi addressing
New Delhi, India’s main Opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, on Friday applauded Pakistan for handling the coronavirus better than his own country's government.

“Another solid achievement by the BJP government. Even Pakistan and Afghanistan handled COVID better than India,” Gandhi said while sharing the projected growth of countries in 2020-21.

The graph showed predicted that Pakistan’s economy would suffer a significantly smaller contraction (0.4%) compared to South Asian counterparts India (10.3%), Afghanistan (5%) and Sri Lanka (4.6%).

India Today reported that the Congress leader had shared a chart that depicted IMF growth projections.

The IMF, in its latest report, had said the global economic crisis will not be quite as grim as feared this year, but global GDP will still contract by 4.4% and the ongoing pandemic means the outlook remains uncertain.

The global lender said countries like India, Spain and Italy will suffer double-digit economic declines in 2020, while Britain just misses that threshold with a 9.8% contraction.

England to tour Pakistan in January for three T20Is, says PCB

Pak vs England
The Pakistan Cricket Board has asked England to play three T20Is in early January, officials confirmed on Thursday.

PCB CEO Wasim Khan told that he has received positive signals from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after he sent a letter to them earlier this week inviting England’s team to tour Pakistan in January.

Sources suggest that the series will likely to be played between January 13-20 of next year.

Khan also confirmed that a security inspection team of Cricket South Africa will visit Pakistan in November to see the arrangements being put in place for their team’s next year’s scheduled tour to Pakistan.

“We have taken another step towards bringing cricket to Pakistan and have formally invited England for a series of three T20Is in Pakistan. I am in contact with my England counterpart for last few days and they’re considering our invitation,” he said.

“It will be very important series for us to improve our image as a host and we’ll do our best to make it happen,” he said.

However, Wasim insisted that this is not reciprocal to Pakistan’s summer tour to England in the middle of COVID-19 pandemic.

The PCB CEO also added that the crisis in Cricket South Africa will not trouble the team’s tour to Pakistan and series will go ahead as scheduled.

Meanwhile, the ECB has said that it is committed to doing what it can to help international cricket returning to Pakistan.

The statement also confirmed that it has received an invitation from Pakistan and will consider various aspects before reaching a final decision.

“After discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board, we can confirm the England and Wales Cricket Board has received an invitation in respect of a short white-ball tour to Pakistan during the early part of 2021,” said the ECB.

"As with any proposed tour that takes place at this time, the safety and welfare of our players and staff is paramount. As such, there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration, including the proposed protocols in relation to COVID-19 bio-secure bubbles, the proposed levels of security around the team, as well as the feasibility of undertaking this tour against the backdrop of an already busy schedule of international cricket for the England men’s team.

"We will be liaising with the PCB, and as well as other partners over the coming weeks to work through these considerations, before a final decision will be taken in due course." It said.

The statement added that the ECB welcomes the fact that international cricket is returning to Pakistan and is committed to doing what we can to help this develop further.

Twitter limits Trump's campaign account on outcry from Republican lawmakers

Twitter restricts Trump's account
Twitter briefly restricts Trump campaign account

U.S. President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign’s Twitter account was briefly restricted on Thursday, causing an outcry from Republican lawmakers who accused social media companies of acting like “speech police” and vowing to hold Twitter responsible.

President Donald Trump taps the screen on a mobile phone at the approximate time a tweet was released from his Twitter account, during a roundtable discussion on the reopening of small businesses in the State Dining Room at the White House in Washington, U.S., June 18, 2020.
Twitter temporarily blocked the @TeamTrump account from sending tweets after it posted a video about Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s son that it said violated its rules.

The video referred to a New York Post story from Wednesday that contained alleged details of Hunter Biden’s business dealings with a Ukrainian energy company and said the former vice president had met with an adviser of the company.

Biden campaign spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement that Republican-led Senate committees have previously concluded that Joe Biden engaged in no wrongdoing related to Ukraine. He also denied such a meeting had taken place.

A Twitter spokesman said earlier on Thursday that the @TeamTrump account, and the accounts of White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany and the New York Post, had been blocked from tweeting because of the company’s policies on hacked materials and posting private information. He said the accounts may need to delete the rule-breaking posts to continue tweeting.

Twitter policy chief Vijaya Gadde said late on Thursday the company has decided to make changes to its hacked materials policy following feedback on its enforcement earlier.

"We will no longer remove hacked content unless it is directly shared by hackers or those acting in concert with them," Gadde said in a tweet here. "We will label Tweets to provide context instead of blocking links from being shared on Twitter."

Twitter also said that despite the new policy the New York Post story would still be blocked. A company spokesman said the stories would still be blocked for “violating the rules on private personal information.”

The Trump campaign, with 2.2 million followers, was sending tweets again on Thursday afternoon. It said in a new tweet it was “re-posting the video Twitter doesn’t want you to watch.” A Twitter spokesman told that the site would not take action as alterations to the video meant it no longer violated its policies.

“It’s going to all end up in a big lawsuit and there are things that can happen that are very severe that I’d rather not see happen, but it’s probably going to have to,” Trump said when asked about the move by Twitter.

U.S. Senate's McConnell says it is 'reprehensible' that social media platforms blocked stories
McEnany likewise began tweeting again on Thursday, saying she regained access after deleting her post on the report.

Both Facebook Inc and Twitter took proactive steps on Wednesday to restrict dissemination of the Post story in the hours after it was published.

Facebook reduced how often the story shows up in users’ news feeds and elsewhere on the platform, an action spokesman Andy Stone said the company takes temporarily pending fact checker review “if we have signals that a piece of content is false.”

Facebook did not respond to questions on whether its fact-checking partners were working on rating the Post’s story.

Twitter prohibited its users from posting links to two New York Post articles about Hunter Biden, saying they violated its policies against posting private information and “hacked materials.”

But Twitter’s Chief Executive Jack Dorsey tweeted on Wednesday “our communication around our actions on the @nypost article was not great. And blocking URL sharing via tweet or DM with zero context as to why we’re blocking: unacceptable.”

A Twitter spokesman declined to answer questions on whether Dorsey had been involved in the decisions on these restrictions on Wednesday or Thursday.

Republicans on the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee responded to Twitter’s actions by tweeting a link to a copy of the New York Post’s story on its website. Twitter blocked the link but later said this had been in error and reversed the action.

The @nypost has not tweeted in over a day, suggesting that they are still blocked from posting.

A spokeswoman for the New York Post declined to comment, other than referring to the Post’s own coverage.

SENDING SUBPOENAS Republican lawmakers slammed the social media companies’ actions on Thursday. U.S. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell said the blocking of the story was “reprehensible” and that there should be no “speech police” in the United States.

After Twitter imposed the restrictions, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee moved to subpoena Dorsey.

Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham and Republican senators Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley said the committee will vote on sending the subpoena on Tuesday, Oct. 20 and plans to have Dorsey in front of the committee by Oct. 23.

Hawley also called for sending a subpoena to Facebook.

“We’re going to finally have an accounting that is long overdue,” Graham said. “This to me crystallizes the problem better than anything I could think of.”

Senator Marco Rubio urged Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai to re-examine Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.

The CEOs of Twitter, Facebook and Alphabet Inc’s Google are set to appear before the Senate Commerce Committee later this month at a hearing to discuss Section 230 - a legal immunity which offers tech companies protection from liability over content posted by users and enables them to act in “good faith” to remove objectionable content.

Pai said on Thursday the agency will move forward to set new rules to clarify the meaning of the provision.

The calls to reform Section 230 and penalize tech companies have been intensifying but it is unlikely there will be action on the law by Congress this year.

The PML-N announced the party leaders’ plan for participation in the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) Gujranwala jalsa.

Vice-President Maryam Nawaz would lead a party rally from her Jati Umra residence in Lahore and reach Gujranwala with her supporters, party workers and leadership through GT Road.

As per the plan, she will reach Thokar Niaz Beg from Jati Umra and proceed to Babu Sabu Interchange through Multan Road. Then she will reach Shahdara Mor through Ring Road to take the GT Road.

Sources said a second option was taking Ring Road from Raiwind Road and swiftly reaching Bhati Chowk at Ravi Road, from where she would turn towards Shahdara Mor.

However, some insiders believe Maryam and other PML-N leaders have already left Lahore and reached Gujranwala for fears of hindrances on the way to the city’s Jinnah Stadium.

Unemployment rate to decline sharply in coming days, Finance Adviser

Hafeez Sheikh Finance Adviser
“The government is taking various steps to put economy on the path of sustainable growth and create employment opportunities for the youth, Finance Adviser Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh claimed

We hope that the graph of unemployment will be reduced sharply in coming days,” he said while speaking to the office bearers and members of Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

“When the PTI government came to power, it had a bulk of challenges, especially a high current account deficit and artificially high exchange rate. These factors were causing de-industrialisation, hampering exports and promoting an import based economy,” he said.

Shaikh believed that the government is heading towards the right direction by focusing on enhancing export. In this context, the government has reduced duties on numerous raw materials besides subsidising energy rates to export sectors.

He committed to solve the problem of refunds on permanent basis, claiming that a lot of improvements were made in this regard. “Through the new refund system (Faster Plus), the private sector would be able to track the progress on their refunds. If there is a slight delay, the online system would apprise the particular business entity about the reason of delay,” he said.

Shaikh added that the government is also working on reducing expenditures. “After many years, the primary deficit has turned into a surplus,” he said.

Noting that Covid-19 had adversely impacted the tax collection, he said the government, despite financial difficulties, facilitated the businesses by introducing different schemes for deferring principal payments, loans for salaries, relaxation in energy bills for small businesses and tax breaks for the construction sector. “The Ehsaas programme has also been started to give low cost loans to young entrepreneurs,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Governor Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar said the government gave extra importance to private sector and is striving hard to keep a close liaison with private sector as they are the main source of wealth creation and employment generation.

“The government has worked hard to reduce the current account deficit from $20 billion dollars to $3bn. The construction industry has started to pick up due to the recent incentives package by the prime minister. Various proposals to reduce energy cost for private sector are being worked out,” he said.

Earlier, the LCCI President Mian Tariq Misbah said the energy cost for all the export sectors needs to be reduced. “The availability of gas for industry should be ensured 24/7,” he said.

“Small traders have suffered a lot since the pandemic began. The government should give interest free loans to them,” he added.

India offers resumption of dialogue, Foreign Office of Pakistan

Zahid Hafeez Spoke person FO in weekly beriefing
Addressing the weekly press briefing here, he said that in order to create an enabling environment India should rescind its illegal and unilateral actions, end its state-terrorism against Kashmiri people, and agree to resolve the Jammu & Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and wishes of the people of Kashmir.

“It is India that has vitiated the atmosphere with its illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 in IIOJK and with continuous belligerent rhetoric. We have been consistently saying that India is trying to change the demographic structure of IIOJK in violation of international law, UN charter, the United Nations Security Council Resolutions, 4th Geneva Convention and humanitarian norms,” he said.

The FO spokesman said that demographic changes should immediately be stopped and this process reversed. “On its part, Pakistan will continue to highlight India’s state terrorism in IIOJK, and its denial of the fundamental freedoms and inalienable right to self-determination to the Kashmiri people”.

FO condemns Delhi’s propaganda against Pakistan-China friendship

About India’s propaganda against Pak-China relationship, he said, “Pakistan and China have been joined together in a broad-based, long-term all-weather strategic cooperative partnership. Our cooperation is an anchor for regional peace and stability. We have always stood by each other through difficult times and have supported each other on core national issues.”

He said Pakistan strongly condemned the malicious Indian propaganda against the longstanding and close Pakistan-China friendship.

“This propaganda is a manifestation of the Indian government’s incurable obsession with Pakistan and its desperate attempts to mislead the world community. The world community is aware that the political opportunism of the RSS-BJP regime is imperiling peace, stability and security of the region,” the spokesman said.

He stressed that instead of promoting propaganda, India needed a course correction, not belligerent rhetoric against Pakistan. India should focus on its policies which were imperiling regional peace and stability, he said.

Answering a question about the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) which is all set to decide on Pakistan’s grey list status in a virtual meeting scheduled later this month, the spokesman said that Pakistan had been implementing the FATF Action Plan since 2018 and it had made significant progress in this regard.

“The FATF has also acknowledged Pakistan’s political commitment and the progress made by us in a number of areas in the action plan. We are committed to and moving towards completion of the action plan. We remain engaged with the process,” he said.

Asked if there was any development in the matter of deaths of 11 Pakistani Hindu citizens in India, he said that Pakistan had communicated to Indian authorities that in the interest of justice to the bereaved family and also to ensure the safety and security of other Pakistani nationals in India, it was of utmost importance for the government of India to be fully transparent about this unfortunate incident.

“It has also been emphasised that since the victims of “Jodhpur Incident” were Pakistani nationals, it was incumbent upon the Government of Pakistan to be fully aware of the circumstances under which its nationals died in India. The Indian side has been urged to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter, provide access to the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi to the surviving member of the bereaved family, share copies of the FIR and the initial investigation report and facilitate the presence of the High Commission for Pakistan’s representatives during the post-mortem of the deceased persons without further delay,” he said.

Meanwhile, a senior Indian diplomat was summoned to the Foreign Office on Thursday to register Pakistan’s strong protest over the ceasefire violations by Indian occupation forces along the Line of Control (LoC) on 14 October 2020, resulting in serious injuries to two civilians.

Due to indiscriminate and unprovoked firing by Indian occupation forces in Jandrot Sector of the LoC, Sufiyan, 25, and Muhammad Rafaqat, 28, suffered serious injuries.

Condemning the deplorable targeting of civilians by Indian occupation forces, it was underscored that such senseless acts are in clear violation of the 2003 Ceasefire Understanding, and are also against all established humanitarian norms and professional military conduct.

Indian side was called upon to respect the 2003 Ceasefire Understanding, investigate this and other such incidents of deliberate ceasefire violations and maintain peace along the LoC and the WB.

PDM ready for ‘big power show’ in Gujranwala

PDM gathering
Stage set for PDM power show in Gujranwala

The opposition is confident about making its first rally in Gujranwala on Friday (today) a success with a claim that the event will lay the foundation for the ouster of Imran Khan’s government.

The recently-formed Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) — which comprises 11 parties including the PML-N, PPP and JUI-F — has vowed to turn the Gujranwala rally into a ‘big power show’, asking Information Minister Shibli Faraz to resign if the venue is jam-packed.

Mr Faraz had thrown a challenge to the opposition to fill the Jinnah Park since the government had allowed it to hold a public gathering there. “Tell us will you resign forthwith if the venue is full,” PML-N Senator Pervaiz Rashid asked the minister.

Gujranwala is a stronghold of PML-N, but the party is not banking on that fact alone. The PML-N leadership has mobilised its workers and supporters across Punjab and asked them to reach the venue while Maulana Fazlur Rehman has also committed to bringing a large number of his followers.

PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari arrived in Lala Musa in Gujrat at the residence of Qamar Zaman Kaira on Thursday evening. It is expected that he will lead PPP workers from there to the venue of the rally.

PML-N vice-president and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s daughter Maryam Nawaz announced that she would leave for the venue from her Jati Umra residence in Lahore at the head of a caravan. The PML-N’s Lahore chapter has been tasked with ensuring that a lot of supporters and workers accompany her to the venue.

Although she would leave in the afternoon, the party did not confirm whether she would reach the venue early in the evening. “Who knows how much time Maryam’s caravan takes to reach Gujranwala,” said a party leader.

PDM president Maulana Fazl will leave for Gujranwala from Jamia Ashrafia on Ferozepur Road, Lahore. The JUI-F leadership has directed its supporters to reach the rally venue directly.

“We have ensured that Friday’s power show is phenomenal as this will decide the fate of the PTI government. All leaders of the opposition are convinced that this rally will set the momentum for ouster of the government,” a senior PML-N leader.

As a good number of PML-N leaders have already reached Gujranwala, the PTI government has placed a number of containers on the roads there, indicating its mood to block the way of as many opposition workers and supporters as it could. But the opposition is confident that with a large number of people heading towards Gujranwala, such barriers won’t be able to stop them from reaching the rally’s venue.

On the other hand, the administration removed all the banners and panaflex posters related to the opposition’s rally in the provincial capital on Thursday. The district administration of Gujranwala and Lahore remained on high alert to deal with any untoward situation.

According to an opposition leader, it has warned the administration that its supporters and workers may start a long march towards Islamabad if police create hurdles to stop them from reaching the venue.

All Pakistan Anjuman Tajran secretary general Naeem Mir said that it would have to take shelter under the umbrella of the opposition after facing frustration over the PTI government’s anti-trader steps like unleashing Tiger Force at them.

Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court sought a reply from the Punjab government on a petition by PML-N Lawyers’ Forum, which challenged the alleged arrest of party workers and placing of containers on the roads to obstruct the Gujranwala’s meeting of the opposition parties.

Advocate General of Punjab Ahmad Awais undertook before the court that no illegal action would be taken by the government.

The court directed the AGP to submit a detailed report on behalf of the government on Friday (today).

Deputy Commissioner of Gujranwala Sohail Ashraf granted an NoC to the PDM for holding the rally at Jinnah Park. He directed the participants of the public meeting to wear face masks and observe social distancing.

“As per the notification, the organisers are prohibited to allow the entry of members of banned outfits inside the venue and on stage… (and) their speeches are also not allowed. Slogans and speeches against the state institutions are prohibited,” it says.

Punjab police have already booked over 400 workers of the PDM, mostly from the PML-N, in different parts of the province for reportedly violating the Covid-19 SOPs during corner meetings.

Maryam Nawaz said Nawaz Sharif would also address the rally. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has already imposed a ban on Mr Sharif’s speeches for being an absconder.

PML-N secretary general Ahsan Iqbal told a presser on Thursday that Prime Minister Khan had become unnerved over the PDM’s protest drive. “I would like to remind Imran Niazi that he had promised to give the opposition a container for protesting… now he will have to listen — ‘Go Imran, go’ — from 220 million people of the country for making their lives miserable,” he said.
