PSL 7 is another opportunity for me to perform and make a comeback in national team : Wahab Riaz

PSL 7 is another opportunity for me to perform and make a comeback in national team : Wahab Riaz
Wahab Riaz targets the upcoming seventh edition of PSL an opportunity to perform and make a comeback to the national squad.

Addressing a virtual news conference Saturday, Riaz said, “When you play cricket, your target is always Pakistan.”

“I have performed. Even last season I was the second highest wicket-taker in the PSL. Sometimes you get the chance and sometimes you don’t get the chance. I have great passion for playing for Pakistan and that is why I am playing cricket,” Wahab said.

“This is another opportunity for me to perform and make a comeback. I feel that I can play for Pakistan for another two or three years. I will try my level best,” said the pacer, who is also captaining Peshawar Zalmi, one of the most successful franchises.

Asked whether he is in a position to perform better than Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi and Hasnain in the PSL right now, he said: “Hasnain, Shaheen and Haris are very good bowlers. If you say whether in the PSL I can perform better than them; so my record speaks about that,” Wahab said.

“It’s not necessary you take wickets every year, it is also counted how well you bowl. All my records in the PSL are in front of you and I will try to continue that. My competition is not with these bowlers but my competition is with myself because I want to perform and play for Pakistan,” Wahab said.

Wahab played his last Test in October 2018, last ODI in November 2020 and last T20I in December 2020.

People protested across France against covid vaccination pass

protest
Some 38,000 people protested across France Saturday, the interior ministry said, two days before a vaccination health pass becomes mandatory to take part in much of public life.

From Monday, those aged 16 and above will have to show they have been jabbed to access restaurants or bars, leisure activities or use inter-regional public transport.

A negative Covid test will no longer be sufficient, except to access health services.

Opponents of the policy say the reinforced measures will impinge upon daily "freedoms" and have railed against what they dub a form of social "apartheid".

An estimated 5,200 demonstrated in Paris, the ministry said, at rallies largely attended by supporters of the nationalist, anti-EU presidential candidate Florian Philippot.

Some demonstrators brought their children along and many of those marching did not wear masks as they waved French flags and bore banners demanding "freedom".

"Vaccine pass -- total resistance!" some shouted in marches.

Sophie, a 44-year-old legal worker, and Franck, a 56-year-old IT worker, told they had had their jabs but were against their daughter being pressured into also being vaccinated.

Sophie insisted the time had come to put faith in collective immunity two years into the pandemic.

In Bordeaux in the southwest, Anaelle, a nurse, denounced compulsory vaccination as "shameful".

"People who've been vaccinated get sick, so what's the point?" she asked.

Although the size of protests has dropped off in recent weeks, a hard core remain angry at French President Emmanuel Macron, who has made it clear he wants to put pressure on the unvaccinated until they accept a coronavirus shot.

Oslo talks with West will 'transform atmosphere of war: Afghan Taliban

taliban
The Taliban's first official talks with the West on European soil since seizing power in Afghanistan will help to "transform the atmosphere of war" after a two-decade insurgency against NATO forces.

The group stormed back to power in August as US and foreign troops began their final withdrawal from the country following a stalemate on the battlefield.

No country has yet recognised the Taliban's government — notorious for human rights abuses during a first stint in power between 1996 and 2001 when they were ousted by a US-led invasion.

"The Islamic Emirate has taken steps for meeting the demands of the Western world and we hope to strengthen our relations through diplomacy with all the countries, including European countries and the West in general," Zabihullah Mujahid told.

The Taliban want to "transform the atmosphere of war... into a peaceful situation".

Talks between the Taliban and Western officials will open in Oslo on Sunday on human rights and humanitarian aid as a poverty crisis deepens.

The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated drastically since the Taliban's takeover. International aid came to a sudden halt and the United States has frozen $9.5 billion (8.4 billion euros) in Afghan central bank assets held overseas.

Hunger now threatens 23 million Afghans, or 55% of the population, according to the United Nations, which says it needs $5 billion from donor countries this year to address the humanitarian crisis in the country.

The visit from Sunday to Tuesday will see meetings between the hardline Islamists, Norwegian authorities and officials from a number of allied countries including Britain, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy and the United States, the Norwegian foreign ministry statement said.

The Taliban delegation is also expected to meet Afghans from civil society, including women leaders and journalists, at a time when the freedoms of those living in Afghanistan are being increasingly curtailed.

"These meetings do not represent a legitimisation or recognition of the Taliban" Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt said Friday.

"But we must talk to the de facto authorities in the country. We cannot allow the political situation to lead to an even worse humanitarian disaster."

The 15-member all male Taliban team, led by foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, left Kabul on Saturday on a plane organised by the Norwegian government, a Taliban spokesman said.

Ali Maisam Nazary, the foreign relations chief for the National Resistance Front (NRF) — an opposition group that bills itself as the last bastion against total Taliban control — condemned Norway over the talks.

"We all must raise our voices and prevent any country from normalizing a terrorist group as the representative of Afghanistan," Nazary, who is based in Paris, tweeted on Friday.

America, Russia agreed to keep working to ease tensions over Ukraine

america and russia
Washington and Moscow's top diplomats on Friday agreed to keep working to ease tensions over Ukraine, with the United States promising a written response to Russian security requirements next week and not ruling out a presidential meeting.

As fears grew that Russia could invade its pro-Western neighbour, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken renewed warnings of severe Western reprisals as he met for 90 minutes with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva.

The Russian foreign ministry said later that in his talks with Blinken, Lavrov had vowed "the most serious consequences" if Washington kept ignoring Moscow's security demands.

Blinken described the high-stakes talks as "frank", with Lavrov also voicing hope for a lowering of the temperature between the former Cold War foes.

Russia has massed tens of thousands of troops on the Ukrainian border, denying it plans to invade but demanding security guarantees, including a permanent ban on the country joining NATO.

Blinken said that Washington will share written ideas with Russia next week in which it will also make clear its own positions.

"We didn't expect any major breakthroughs to happen today, but I believe we are now on a clear path in terms of understanding each other's concerns and each other's positions," Blinken told reporters.

"We anticipate that we will be able to share with Russia our concerns and ideas in more detail in writing next week and we agreed to further discussions after that," he added.

Speaking separately, Lavrov told reporters: "Antony Blinken agreed that we need to have a reasonable dialogue, and I hope emotions will decrease."

He added that another meeting could be held between the two, but that it was "premature" to start talking about another summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin, who met in Geneva last June.

Blinken, however, did not rule out fresh talks between the presidents after Biden twice warned Putin by telephone of consequences for any Ukraine invasion.

"If we conclude (and) the Russians conclude that the best way to resolve things is through a further conversation between them, we're certainly prepared to do that," Blinken said.

Biden bluntly assessed on Wednesday that Putin is likely to "move in" on Ukraine and warned of a "disaster for Russia".

A senior US official, speaking to reporters later Friday, said Washington was preparing to send proposals to the Russians and was in close coordination with "our allies".

"The United States does not plan a public release," she said.

Pakistan urges UN to resolve Kashmir dispute on 'urgent basis'

united nations
Pakistan has called out to the United Nations to expedite its efforts and "urgently" resolve the Kashmir dispute in a bid to halt Indian atrocities in the territory and prevent a threat to regional and global peace.

"Peace and security must remain at the core of the functions of the United Nations," Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations Munir Akram told the UN General Assembly on Friday while commenting on the report of the UN chief on the work of the organisation.

"We urge the security council and the secretary-general to exercise their considerable authority to promote an early and peaceful resolution of the Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK) dispute and to end the Indian reign of terror against the Kashmiri people", the Pakistani envoy said.

The UN, he said, can do “much more” to address peace and security threats by fully using the authority provided by the United Nations Charter, such as in Article 99, and by taking action in the General Assembly if the Security Council is unable to do so.

The primary threat in South Asia, the Pakistani envoy said, is posed by the dispute over IOJK and India’s attempt to annex and transform the Muslim majority state into Hindu majority territory, "a grave violation of council resolutions that promised Kashmiris their right to self-determination through a United Nations supervised plebiscite".

Shedding light on the extensive illegal actions taken by India, the ambassador urged the council and the secretary-general to promote an early, peaceful end to the dispute.

He cited the rise of racial and religious hate and violence, with Islamophobia among its gravest manifestations, notably as characterised by lynching and calls for genocide of Muslims in India.

He said: "The worst manifestation of Islamophobia is the officially-inspired campaign of the ''Hindutva'' adherents in India against Muslims."

So far, the Pakistan envoy noted, there has been no accountability for India’s crimes.

Indian laws provide complete impunity to the 900,000 troops India had deployed in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan condemned the increasing harassment, illegal arrests and registration of fake criminal cases against journalists and civil society activists such as Khurram Pervez in the Indian-occupied territory, he said.

The recent attack and ban on the Kashmir Press Club, he added, is another manifestation of India’s entrenched use of brutal force and coercion to silence all those who raise their voice against its criminal and genocidal acts in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Ambassador Akram also drew attention to the statement made recently by the Head of “Genocide Watch”, Professor Gregory Stanton, in which he stated: “We are warning that genocide could very well happen in India."

"We call on the secretary-general and the United Nations to take decisive steps to combat Islamophobia and to prevent the danger of genocide against the Muslims of India," he said.

At the outset, the Pakistani envoy welcomed the United Nations mobilisation of humanitarian and other assistance for Afghanistan, calling last September’s flash appeal and the recent $5 billion appeal “timely and essential”.

He further added that the United Nations role in peacekeeping is a major success and "Pakistan will remain a steadfast partner in ensuring the effectiveness of such operations, notably the United Nations Military Observer Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), stationed in the IOJK region."

United States plans to make who more independent

UN
The United States, the World Health Organization's top giver, is opposing recommendations to make the office more autonomous, four authorities engaged with the discussions said, raising questions about the Biden organization's drawn out help for the UN office.

The proposal, made by the WHO's working group on sustainable financing, would increase each member state's standing annual contribution, according to a WHO document published online and dated January 4.

The plan is part of a wider reform process galvanised by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has highlighted the limitations of the WHO's power to intervene early in a crisis.

But the US government is opposing the reform because it has concerns about the WHO's ability to confront future threats, including from China, US officials told Reuters.

It is pushing instead for the creation of a separate fund, directly controlled by donors, that would finance prevention and control of health emergencies.

Four European officials involved in the talks, who declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media, confirmed the US opposition. The US government had no immediate comment.

The published proposal calls for member states' mandatory contributions to rise gradually from 2024 so they would account for half the agency's $2 billion core budget by 2028, compared to less than 20% now, the document said.

The WHO's core budget is aimed at fighting pandemics and strengthening healthcare systems across the world. It also raises an additional $1 billion or so a year to tackle specific global challenges such as tropical diseases and influenza.

Supporters say that the current reliance on voluntary funding from member states and from charities such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation forces the WHO to focus on priorities set by the funders, and makes it less able to criticise members when things go wrong.

An independent panel on pandemics that was appointed to advise on the WHO reform had called for a much bigger increase in mandatory fees, to 75% of the core budget, deeming the current system "a major risk to the integrity and independence" of the WHO.

Blinken vows swift and severe response if Russia attacks Ukraine

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign minister
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said after talks with Russia's foreign minister on Friday that Moscow would face a "swift, severe and a united response" if it invades Ukraine.

Blinken said after the talks in Geneva that Washington had agreed to provide written comments to Russia after Moscow demanded security guarantees, including a pledge that Ukraine will never be able to join NATO.

He described Friday's talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, intended to reduce tensions that have risen since Russia massed troops near Ukraine's border, as frank and useful.

"We've been clear - if any Russian military forces move across Ukraine's border, that's a renewed invasion. It will be met with swift, severe and a united response from the United States and our partners and allies," Blinken told a news conference in Geneva.

Western states fear Moscow is planning a new assault on Ukraine after sending in forces into the former Soviet republic 2014 to annex the Crimea peninsula. Russia denies planning an attack but says it could take unspecified military action if its security demands are not met.

Blinken said Washington had sought during Friday's talks to determine whether Moscow was prepared to take a diplomatic path to defuse tensions over Ukraine.

Both sides agreed it was important for the diplomatic process to continue, he said.

Lavrov said after meeting Blinken that he hoped that emotions would cool down over Ukraine and repeated Russian assertions that it poses no threat to its neighbour.

PTI revived economy despite all challenges: Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Friday that despite challenges faced by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) due to Covid-19, the government managed to revive the economy with a growth rate expected to touch 5.37 per cent.

Speaking during a session of the National Assembly, the foreign minister said that the government took “painful decisions” to revive the economy, and after two years the economy is in the “recovery phase”. He said he was citing this from the “unbiased” reports of the World Bank, Bloomberg and The Economist.

According to Qureshi, the agri sector that was stagnant during the previous governments recorded a 3.3 per cent growth due to the measures taken by the government. He added that the large-scale manufacturing (LSM) sector also witnessed growth during the PTI’s rule.

Comparing the economic development to that achieved during the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government, he said the PML-N’s economic growth at its zenith was 5 per cent, whereas the PTI, despite all the obstructions, managed to surpass that.

Qureshi also talked about the alleged audio clip of ex-chief justice Saqib Nisar and an affidavit of the former top judge of Gilgit, terming them an attempt to influence the judiciary for favourable decisions.

“This trend is dangerous, we should all take notice of it and put an end to it,” the minister added.

The remarks made by the foreign minister irked the opposition members. Pakistan Peoples Party's (PPP) Agha Rafiullah was also admonished for speaking out of turn by the NA speaker. He was told to behave himself.

Responding to FM Qureshi, PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal said the foreign minister's remarks were not taken into consideration by the PML-N as they were "non-serious utterances".

"When the foreign minister was with us [PML-N], he would sing our praises," he said, adding that the minister also used to praise former president Asif Ali Zardari as well.

The PML-N leader said the remarks made by the foreign minister seemed like an "interview" being given to someone. "The federal minister through his speech has tried to present himself as an alternative leader," he added.

Speaking about the presidential system, he said he never understood who always stirred the debate in Pakistan. "If we are not sure about the governance system to run this country despite a passage of 75 years, then we don't need an enemy to hurt us," he lamented.

According to Iqbal, the 1956 constitution introduced the federal system. He said the presidential system broke up Pakistan, adding that Pakistan fared worst under the presidential system.

The cases are on the rise, but top officials have refused to impose a lockdown, saying that the country's economy could not bear the burden of another.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Imran Khan turned down the possibility of imposing a lockdown.

Addressing a launching ceremony of the National Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Policy in Islamabad, he said the government will not shut down the economy but will advise people to strictly observe mandated SOPs for COVID-19.

Amid the rapid spread of coronavirus, two major politicians — Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif and Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin — also tested positive for coronavirus two days back.

NCOC issues new guidelines
The NCOC had on Wednesday issued revised coronavirus guidelines and SOPs for the education, restaurant, entertainment, and other sectors as Pakistan struggles to contain the spread of the Omicron variant.

The forum had decided that indoor weddings, dining, and gatherings will be banned in cities and districts with an infection rate higher than 10%. The schools in such cities and districts will remain open, with "staggered" classes for children under 12 years.

As a result of the rising cases, the NCOC also lowered the crowd attendance for Pakistan Super League (PSL) from 100% to 25% for Karachi-leg matches, while children under the age of 12 have been barred from the stadium.

PM Imran’s cross-examination allowed in Khwaja Asif defamation case

PM Imran and Khwaja Asif
The Islamabad High Court accepted on Thursday Khawaja Asif's petition challenging the decision to disallow the right to cross-examine Prime Minister Imran Khan with reference to the premier’s defamation case against him.

The Chief Justice of the IHC Athar Minallah remarked that the case should be heard on a daily basis and decided in due course.

He further stated that the court would order the trial court to decide the case within two months.

During the proceedings, the court asked Khawaja Asif's lawyer why he was postponing the case, claiming that he was unnecessarily delaying the case, cautioning him against doing so.

Referring to the premier's counsel, the court observed that it was the defandant's right to cross-examine the prime minister. It further maintained that the cross-examination should have been held the next day of the statement being recorded.

“The statement was recorded on December 17. How can the trial court terminate the right to cross-examine on the same day?” the CJ questioned.

Responding to the IHC chief justice, PM Imran’s lawyer aruged that Khawaja Asif had not appeared before the court for a year.

Earlier this month, PML-N leader Khawaja Asif had challenged the sessions court’s decision of not giving his counsel the right to present arguments in a defamation suit worth Rs10 billion filed by Prime Minister Imran Khan against him.

The prime minister last month submitted an affidavit to Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Adnan via video link against the PML-N leader for levelling allegations of non-transparency, money laundering and use of anonymous companies in the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust funds.

The PML-N leader filed an application in the IHC against the lower court’s verdict and nominated PM Imran and the sessions court judge as respondents.

X-rays do not show symptoms of corona during the early stages of infection, so this technology cannot fully accommodate PCR tests. However, it can still play an important role in preventing the spread of the virus especially when PCR tests are not easily available.

Experts believe that this can be important and potentially life-saving when diagnosing serious cases of the virus, helping determine what treatment the patient may need.

Professor Milan, vice principal of research, innovation and management, said there could potentially be game-changing research.

Opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif tests positive for coronavirus again
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif has tested positive for coronavirus again, PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed Wednesday, as the country battles a fifth wave of the pandemic.

News of Shahbaz testing positive comes as active coronavirus cases in Pakistan shot up from 39,881 to 44,717 in the last 24 hours, the highest since October 6, according to official figures released Wednesday morning.

The PML-N president, a cancer survivor, who had last tested positive for COVID-19 in June 2020, is now isolating at home and resting as per his doctor's advice, Aurangzeb said in a statement.

"Shahbaz Sharif has asked the masses and PML-N workers to pray for his health," she added.

In recent days, President Arif Alvi and Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood had tested positive for coronavirus again as well. The president has recovered from the virus six days after testing positive.

Dr Rana Muhammad Safdar, the director-general of health, had warned that coronavirus infections in Pakistan are doubling every week on average and could strain the country’s healthcare system in two weeks’ time.

In the last 24 hours. the country registered a positivity ratio at 9.48% as 5,472 new cases were detected after 57,669 tests were conducted, said the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the forum leading Pakistan's COVID response.

he Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), meanwhile, has expressed concerns regarding the worsening coronavirus situation in the country.

The medical body, in a statement Tuesday, demanded the government immediately impose a ban on political rallies, sit-ins, and other public gatherings.

The association also warned of further aggravation of the coronavirus situation across the country in the next two to three weeks and said that there is a risk that the Omicron variant could become more deadly.

Mohammad Hasnain to undergo test on bowling action after being reported at Big Bash League

Young Pakistan pace bowler Mohammad Hasnain
Young Pakistan pace bowler Mohammad Hasnain will undergo a test on his bowling action on Tuesday after it was reported by umpires in the Big Bash League (BBL), according to a report by ESPNcricinfo.

The Hyderabad-born pacer, who made his debut over at the BBL with a triple-wicket maiden, will undergo the test at the International Cricket Council accredited bio-mechanics laboratory in Lahore, the report said.

The development comes after the the 21-year-old — who played for Sydney Thunder — was accused of chucking during a match against Sydney Sixers.

According to a report by Samaa, the incident occurred during the first innings of the match as Sixers’ captain Moises Henriques failed to connect when Hasnain bowled a bouncer.

Words were exchanged between the duo, with Henriques telling Hasnain: “Nice throw, mate”.

According to the ICC website, an illegal bowling action is where a player is throwing rather than bowling the ball.

"This is defined by the ICC as being where the player’s elbow extends by an amount of more than 15 degrees between their arm reaching the horizontal and the ball being released," the rules state.

If the player is found to be using an illegal bowling action, then they will be suspended from bowling until they have modified their bowling action and undertaken another test successfully, the rules add.

China urges caution opening overseas mail after Omicron case

China urges caution opening overseas mail after Omicron case
China is urging people to wear masks and gloves when opening mail, especially from abroad, after authorities suggested the first case of the Omicron coronavirus virus variant found in Beijing could have arrived via a package from Canada.

Authorities vowed to step up disinfection of overseas mail and are insisting postal staff handling it are fully vaccinated.

The precautions come less than three weeks before the capital opens the Winter Olympic Games and as several cities work to stamp out new outbreaks of coronavirus infections.

"Minimize purchases of overseas goods or receiving mail from abroad," state broadcaster CCTV said late on Monday in a social media post.

"Be sure to protect yourself during face-to-face handovers and wear masks and gloves; try to open the package outdoors."

Health officials said the person found infected with the Omicron variant opened a package from Canada that had been routed through the United States and Hong Kong and transmission via the package "could not be ruled out".

The case highlighted the importance of "personal defence", CCTV said.

Similar suggestions on how to handle parcels, not just those from overseas, were made by the National Health Commission on its official WeChat account and reposted by authorities in the cities of Shanghai and Nanjing.

China has been an outlier in asserting that COVID-19 can be transmitted via cold-chain imports such as frozen meat and fish, even though the World Health Organization has played down the risk, and has been pushing a narrative via state media that the virus existed abroad before it was discovered in late 2019 in the central city of Wuhan.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said last year that the relative risk of coronavirus infections through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects is considered low.

In recent weeks, China has been battling a resurgence in cases in several cities, some of them of the highly transmissible Omicron variant. On Tuesday, it reported 127 new local cases with confirmed symptoms.

The State Post Bureau issued a notice on Monday stating that international mail must be disinfected after reaching China, and staffers who process and deliver international mail must have received COVID-19 vaccinations and a booster.

China Post has also been reminding recipients of overseas mail to disinfect the contents "in a timely manner" with stickers pasted on parcels.

Murree incident occurred due to administrative negligence

murree incident
The five-member probe committee formed by the government to inquire about the Murree tragedy has completed its investigation on Sunday and has revealed that the incident occurred due to administrative negligence.

According to sources, after completing its investigation — which was based on interviews of victims and administrative officials — the probe committee has departed from the hill station to Lahore.

The inquiry committee is expected to present its report to the Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar on Monday, sources said.

The probe committee prepared its report after recording the statements of victims and more than 30 officers from different administrative departments in Murree.

The probe has revealed that on the day of the incident, several snowploughs were parked at the same place which led to road blockages, the administrative staff was absent from duty, while a blizzard warning from the metrological department was blatantly neglected, according to sources.

On January 8, 23 people had died due to carbon monoxide poisoning while being stuck in their cars as thousands of tourist vehicles ended up being stranded in Murree due to heavy snowfall.

It should be recalled that following the tragic incident, the Punjab government had declared Murree as a calamity-hit area after heavy snowfall wreaked havoc on the city.

According to the local administration of Murree, rain and blizzards were forecast around Murree, with thunderstorms at a speed of 50-90 kmph along with heavy snowfall.

Further, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had also reprimanded on Thursday the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and said it was responsible for the Murree tragedy.

Cryptocurrency scam, No law governing virtual currencies in Pakistan

Cryptocurrency
The Director General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) revealed that currently there is no law or regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies in the country.

DG FIA Sanaullah Abbasi said that there was no section of law available in PECA-2016, FERA-1947 and AMLA-2010 regarding illegal and misuse of cryptocurrency. There was no regulatory framework for the virtual asset service providers (VASP) to comply with the FATF requirements, he added.

He warned banks not to make transactions using virtual currency mechanism as at present there is a legal lacunae in the country to check against its illegal operations and misuse.

FIA is taking up the issue of critical legal lacunae with the State Bank of Pakistan on Tuesday for proceeding against this new mode of crime.

At present, the cybercrime wing takes cognizance on the basis of online fraud, which is not adequate enough, Abbasi underlined.

He said, "the FIA is also investigating misuse of bank credit card for purchasing virtual currencies overseas, and wants the banks to guard against any violation of their system for transacting virtual currencies."

Talking to the media in Lahore on Saturday, Shahbaz said that the country is witnessing record inflation for the first time in history, while poverty and unemployment are also persistently increasing due to the policies of the incumbent government.

"It is the result of Imran Khan Niazi's and his government’s negligence and corruption," he said.

Criticising the government's decision to increase petroleum prices, Shahbaz said that the regime is committing the "economic murder of the poor."

"This incompetent and corrupt government has plunged the nation in the mire of inflation," he said.

The PML-N president said that whenever petroleum prices increase in the international market, the government quickly reacts to it and increases prices in Pakistan too but never bothers providing any relief to the masses when the international market witnessed a downward trend.

Responding to a question regarding the potential no-confidence motion against the premier in the National Assembly, Shahbaz said that the move will be decided with mutual consultation of all Opposition parties.
