Pakistan completely rejects Indian comments on Kashmir and Pakistan-related issues

Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr. Muhammad Faisal
Pakistan has completely rejected the comments made by the Spokesman of Indian Ministry of External Affairs about Prime Minister Imran Khan's statements and on other Kashmir and Pakistan-related issues.

Foreign Office Spokesperson in a statement said exposing India's egregious behavior and state-terrorism in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir is part of our international obligations and our moral responsibility to the Kashmiri victims of Indian repression.

He said if India feels provoked, it is only because India is unwilling to face the truth about its indefensible actions that are driven by the toxic mix of an extremist ideology and hegemonic ambitions.

The Spokesman said equally reprehensible are India's pretentions of casting itself as a 'normal' country.

He said the international community would like to ask as to what normal country cages eight million people in an inhuman lockdown for over two months and deceives the world by claiming that everything is fine.

The Spokesperson questioned what normal country provides space and political patronage to the perpetrators of mob lynchings by cow vigilantes and repugnant schemes like gharwapsi and love Jihad?

The Spokesperson advised India to keep its lectures on diplomacy and normality to itself. He said all we would like to stress is, "Physician, heal thyself!"

Saudi Arabia allows foreign men and women to share hotel rooms

Saudi Arabia allows foreign men and women to share hotel rooms
Saudi Arabia is allowing foreign men and women to rent hotel rooms together without proving they are related, after the Muslim kingdom launched a new tourist visa regime to attract holidaymakers.

Women, including Saudis, are also permitted to rent hotel rooms by themselves, in a break with previous regulations. The moves appear to pave the way for unaccompanied women to travel more easily.

The Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage confirmed a report on Friday by Arabic-language newspaper Okaz, adding: “All Saudi nationals are asked to show family ID or proof of relationship on checking into hotels. This is not required of foreign tourists. All women, including Saudis, can book and stay in hotels alone, providing ID on check-in.”

Saudi Arabia threw open its doors last week to foreign tourists from 49 countries as it tries to grow that sector and diversify its economy away from oil exports. As part of the move, it decreed that visitors need not wear all-covering black robes but should dress modestly. Alcohol remains banned.

Saudi Arabia has been relatively closed off for decades and until recently unrelated men and women, including foreigners, could be severely punished for mixing in public. Strict social codes have been relaxed in recent years and previously banned entertainment has flourished.

But an influx of tourists — the authorities are aiming for 100 million annual visits by 2030 — could push boundaries further and risks conservative backlash.

The kingdom ended a heavily criticized ban on women driving last year and in August granted women new rights to travel abroad, chipping away at a guardianship system that assigns each woman a male relative to approve important decisions throughout their lives.

Until now, foreigners traveling to Saudi Arabia have been largely restricted to resident workers and their dependents, business travelers, and Muslim pilgrims who are given special visas to visit the holy cities.

Mohammad Hasnain becomes youngest bowler to claim hat-trick in T20I cricket

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain
Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain on Saturday became the youngest bowler in cricket history to claim a T20I hat trick.

The 19-year-old pacer achieved the feat against Sri Lanka in the first of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.

He picked up a wicket on the final ball of the 16th over and two more on the first two balls of the 19th over.

The disconnect between the first and other two wickets meant that his feat was largely lost on the crowd and even the commentary team.

It was only after he had completed his hat-trick, it dawned that he has three in three balls.

Hasnain finished with figures of 3-37 in his four overs. Although he was wayward at the start, he came back strong and made his wicket-taking ability erase most of what had happened earlier.

Sri Lanka upset Pakistan by 64 runs in first Twenty 20 in Lahore

Depleted Sri Lanka pulled off a stunning upset on Saturday, beating the favourites and hosts Pakistan by 64 runs in the first T20I at the Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.

Sri Lanka innings

After being put in to bat first, Danushka Gunathilaka and Avishka Fernando opened the innings for Sri Lanka, whereas Imad Wasim and Faheem Ashraf shared the new ball for Pakistan.

The Sri Lankan pair started confidently and did not have to take much risk early on. The loose balls they dispatched with ease and on the few good ones they had luck on their side. They were 50-0 at the end of 5 overs.

The in-form Gunathilaka manhandled the Pakistani bowlers and brought up his 50 in just the 8th over.

Some important folks made it to the stadium but they must have not been impressed by what they saw early on from Pakistani bowlers.

Imad Wasim bowled a tight 9th over, giving away just four runs and that forced Gunathilaka to be a bit more adventurous in the next one bowled by Shadab Khan.

The risk eventually made him vanish as the leggie trapped the impressive leftie in front of the wickets. Gunathilaka contributed 57 off just 38 balls laced with 8 fours and a six.

The loss of Gunathilaka slowed down the Sri Lankan innings and they were dealt a second blow in the 15th over when Shadab's direct hit sent Fernando walking back to the pavilion.

With just 5 overs to go, Sri Lanka were 126-2 and lost the momentum slightly, although could still target 180.

Young pacer Mohammad Hasnain had a difficult first two overs but he came back strong in his third, getting Banuka Rajapaksha out with a fast yorker.

He picked up another in the 19th over, with Dasun Shanaka lofting a slower ball at deep long-on where Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad almost had a collision. Akmal caught it though.

Hasnain removed another the very next ball, which when combined with his first on the last ball of his previous over, made it three on three balls or a hat trick. Few realised it in that moment, however.

Hasnain's wickets and some incredibly tight bowling by Mohammad Amir restricted Sri Lanka to 165-5 in their 20 overs.

The run chase

Babar Azam and Ahmed Shehzad opened the innings for Pakistan, whereas Kasun Rajitha and Nuwan Pradeep shared the new ball for Sri Lanka.

After a decent first over, Pakistan were dealt twin setbacks as they first lost Azam and then Umar Akmal was out on a first-ball duck.

With the team in trouble, captain Sarfaraz Ahmed walked in to partner Shehzad. But their partnership did not last long as Shehzad played a poor stroke where his feet did not move and he ended up edging one to his stumps.

New man in was Iftikhar Ahmed who impressed mightily in the ODI series but now was his first real assignment in a Pakistan shirt.

The duo plugged the leak of wickets but had to bat on the slower side, which saw the run rate jump up. At the halfway mark, they were 57-3.

Iftikhar's decent 25-run knock came to an end in the 12th over courtesy an unfortunate mix-up. He was ran out as things got messier for the hosts.

After the part he played in Iftikhar's dismissal, there was added responsibility on Sarfaraz. However, he came up short once again, dancing down the track and getting bowled in the 14th over.

Imad Wasim followed him back to the pavilion in the 15th over as wheels completely came off of Pakistan's run chase. Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf came and went as a heavy defeat became a certainty.

The inevitable happened in the 18th over when Pakistan lost their final two wickets at the score of just 101.

Line-ups

Pakistan: Ahmed Shehzad, Babar Azam, Umar Akmal, Sarfraz Ahmed (capt, wk), Asif Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Faheem Ashraf, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hasnain

Sri Lanka: Danushka Gunathilaka, Avishka Fernando, Shehan Jayasuriya, Banuka Rajapaksha, Minod Bhanuka (wk), Dasun Shanaka (capt), Lakshan Sandakan, Isuru Udana, Wanindu Hasaranga, Kasun Rajitha, Nuwan Pradeep

FM Qureshi urges JUI-F to reconsider 'Azadi March' decision

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi
Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has urged the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) to reconsider its decision of marching on Islamabad on October 27.

“Maulana has announced to protest in Islamabad on October 27, and it was October 27, when New Delhi took over the Indian Occupied Kashmir (IOK). This day is associated with the Kashmiri people. By protesting on this day, JUI-F will not only damage Pakistan but also the Kashmir cause,” said FM Qureshi while speaking to a private television channel.

October 27 is marked as a ‘black day’ as the saga of suffering of the people of occupied Kashmir started with the landing of Indian troops in Srinagar on that day in 1947.

“Maulana is a respectable man. If on October 27, there is a debate over an issue other than Kashmir, then India will find exaggerate it,” warned the foreign minister

FM Qureshi further requested Maulana Fazlur Rehman to rethink his decision. “He can protest but his protest must not be merged with the matter of Kashmir.”

Rehman, the chief of his eponymous faction of JUI, gave the protest call on Thursday to oust the government, setting aside all speculations.

The two main opposition parties – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) – tried earlier this week to discourage him from ‘going solo’ with the anti-government rally, but to no avail.

A PML-N delegation met Rehman on October 2 to convince him against the march. The JUI-F chief, at a joint presser following that meeting, dropped a hint that his party might consider the proposal.

However, after an intra-party consultative session of the JUI-F top cadres the next day decided against delaying the march. Rehman, flanked by his top party aides, confirmed to the media following the session that their march would begin later this month.

He also hinted at staging a sit-in (dharna) at Islamabad’s D-Chowk where the PTI had staged a marathon dharna in 2014 against alleged rigging in the 2013 elections. “We are not ones to disperse easily,” the cleric said.

The JUI-F chief’s announcement stirred up speculation that he had disregarded the proposal of the other opposition parties by ‘going solo’.

“We’re in contact with all the other parties and making decisions in consultation with them,” Rehman had told the media on Thursday.

Protest held in Islamabad's Comsats University over alleged negligence after student dies of cardiac arrest

Inam
A 22-year-old student of Islamabad's Comsats University died of cardiac arrest on Friday, while students held the university administration responsible for the death and held protests.

The students alleged that a delay in provision of medical treatment to the boy, Inam, led to his death — a charge denied by the university. A large number of students assembled in the university premises and chanted slogans against the university administration and demanded action against those responsible for the alleged delay.

"Unfortunately a student of BBA 2nd semester at CU, Islamabad who got low blood pressure and cardiac arrest has died due to unavailability of ambulance on time, moreover a private car was not allowed to enter in the university," read a statement issued by a body of the university's students.

"So-called policies by the management took an innocent life today," it said, demanding complete investigation and punishment for all those responsible.

According to the protesting students, Inam got a heart attack and his fellow students asked the university administration to call an ambulance or arrange a vehicle so the student could be rushed to a hospital.

However, according to the students, the university administration failed to arrange an ambulance and also declined requests to allow students to bring in a private car to take Inam to the hospital.

They alleged that Inam died after lying on the floor for half an hour in a helpless condition.

The university, through a press release, rejected the allegations of delay, saying that the student had been provided emergency treatment at the university's medical centre.

"The student suffered from a massive cardiac arrest and was immediately rushed to the medical centre where he was administered emergency treatment by trained medical professionals," read the press release.

"After administering emergency treatment, the student was rushed to National Institute of Health Medical Complex, Islamabad, for further medical treatment. However, the hospital authorities declared the student dead on arrival," it added.

"The student’s family refused the postmortem of deceased student and the subsequently the body was handed over to the family."

India admits Mi-17 chopper was shot down by own missile on Feb 27

India admits Mi-17 chopper was shot down by own missile on Feb 27
India's Air Force chief has finally admitted that its Mi-17 chopper, which crashed near Srinagar on February 27 this year, came down after its own missile mistakenly hit it.

"Court of Inquiry completed and it was our mistake as our missile had hit our own chopper," Indian Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria told the ANI news agency on Friday.

Investigators had earlier found that the Indian air defence missile was fired shortly before the crash of the Mi17 V5 helicopter at Budgam near Srinagar. But the Indian Air Force had yet to accept its own fault.

"We will take action against two officers. We accept this was our big mistake and we will ensure such mistakes are not repeated in future," the Indian air chief said.

At least seven people, including Indian six security forces personnel, reportedly died when the Indian helicopter Mi-17 V5 crashed in the Indian occupied Kashmir region.

The incident had taken place during a period of heightened India-Pakistan tensions, the same day that the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) shot down an Indian aircraft arrested an Indian pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, on the ground.

Pakistan later handed over the arrested Indian air force pilot as a goodwill gesture.

Fazl trying to salvage his ‘sinking’ political career: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan launched a scathing attack on his political opponent Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, saying that the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F chief is trying to save his ‘sinking politics’.

The prime minister was chairing a session where the ruling party officials and government spokespersons were also present. Sources said that during the session, the JUI-F chief’s plan to march was also discussed.

In the meeting, PM Imran said that peaceful protest is everyone’s democratic right and the government will fulfill its responsibility to safeguard lives of the public.

Criticising the JUI-F chief further, the premier said that Fazl is unhappy with the reforms in Madrassahs, adding that if implemented, the reforms will be a hurdle in politicisation of students.

In the meeting, the PM also reviewed his upcoming visit to China and the progress on the China- Pakistan Economic Corridor projects.

On Thursday, Fazlur Rehman said he will lead the march towards Islamabad on October 27 and warned the government against placing hurdles in his way.

Speaking to the media, he said the march will begin on October 27 in which convoys from across the country would take part.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari earlier said that his party will withdraw its support for Maulana Fazlur Rehman if it suspects that the JUI-F chief is acting on the behest of some other force.

"I hope that Maulana's long march will be successful," said Bilawal, who was speaking to the media at his father's court hearing into the fake bank accounts case.

"It was the PPP and PML-N's desire to do a joint political gathering or a procession but Maulana has announced a long march. We have called a party meeting to decide how far we can go in supporting him."

Messi denies conflict with Barcelona after Inter victory

Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi insisted on Wednesday there are no problems between him and Antoine Griezmann or between the players and Barcelona´s board.

Messi returned from injury to make his second start of the season against Inter Milan in the Champions League as Barca came from behind to win 2-1.

Speaking after the match, Messi was asked about his relationship with Griezmann, who had said on Tuesday it was "difficult" to establish a connection with the Argentine while he had been injured.

"Obviously we have no problem," Messi said. "There is a good relationship with everyone, the dressing room is united. We needed this victory and hopefully now we can kick on and continue in this way."

Luis Suarez scored a sensational double at Camp Nou and it was Messi that supplied the Uruguayan´s 85th-minute winner, with a pass at the end of a weaving run down the right.

Barcelona now sit level on four points with Borussia Dortmund in Group F.

There have also been suggestions of a rift between Barcelona´s players and the board, with Gerard Pique implying last weekend that articles critical of the team had come from higher up the club, however Messi denied the relationship had soured

"We are fine. The important thing is to talk about the triumph of today and against Getafe," he said.

"We have Sevilla now to finish well before the international break. We will try to win it because it creates a mess when there is no football so we want to finish well and go out on a high before the break."

Uber makes JFK airport helicopter taxis available to all users

Uber makes JFK airport helicopter taxis available to all users
Ride-hailing company Uber is taking to the air in New York City where users with a little cash to spare will soon be able to book helicopter flights to John F. Kennedy International airport through their apps.

The company announced its Uber Copter offer on Thursday, saying flights to and from Lower Manhattan will become available to all Uber users on October 7. Uber made the feature available to its premium members in June.

The roughly eight-minute flight will cost between $200 and $225 per person and include ground transportation on either side of the trip. Passengers can bring along a small suitcase and have to watch a safety video before takeoff, similar to that on an airplane.

Uber’s prices roughly comparable to those of competitors, including Blade, which offers a $195 trip to JFK from Manhattan. Those services do not offer ground transportation to the final destination, however.

The flights in Uber-branded helicopters are operated by HeliFlite Shares, a licensed New Jersey-based charter company.

For now, Uber rides shuttling passengers to the heliport in Manhattan are only available from the southern tip of the island to prevent customers from being stuck in traffic and cut down on travel time.

Uber says the service is intended to reduce travel times, but when Reuters tried Copter on Wednesday, a trip from its Midtown office to the airport took 70 minutes, including a subway ride downtown and two Uber rides to and from the heliport. That’s about the same time it would have taken by regular taxi in moderate traffic.

But Uber might gradually expand the Manhattan pick-up zone, said Eric Allison, head of Elevate, Uber’s aerial ride-hailing program.

“Helicopters are certainly expensive and it will be a premium product, but we think we’re actually able to offer a fairly accessible entry point with Uber Copter,” Allison said during an interview on Wednesday.

JFK is one of the country’s largest airports and car trips from congested Manhattan can take anywhere from one to two hours, while public transit takes between 50 and 75 minutes.

With concerns over congestion and vehicle emissions mounting, Uber hopes its NYC Copter project will pave the way for Uber Air, a futuristic taxi service that transports passengers in electric “vertical take-off and landing” aircraft.

The company plans to launch commercial electric airborne services in Los Angeles, Dallas and Australia’s Melbourne in 2023, with users hailing flights from the top of designated buildings.

It partnered with aircraft manufacturers Boeing Co, Bell Helicopter, Embraer SA, Mooney International Corp, Pipistrel and Karem Aircraft Inc to develop the vehicles, which are currently only available as a prototype.

Saudi has restored oil output after attacks, focused on Aramco IPO: energy minister

energy minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman
Saudi Arabia has fully restored oil output after attacks on its facilities last month and is now focused on the listing of Saudi Aramco, its energy minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman said.

The kingdom's oil production capacity now stands at 11.3 million barrels per day, he told a Moscow energy conference on Thursday, adding: “We all rose to the challenge”.

“We have stabilised production capacity, we are at 11.3... We still have the kit and the tools to overcome any future challenges.”

The listing of Aramco is the centrepiece of Saudi Arabian plans to shake up its economy and diversify away from oil.

Bankers from around 20 international and domestic financial institutions are now working on the company's plan to sell 1 per cent of Aramco in Riyadh before an international sale in 2020 or 2021.

Facebook suffers legal blow in EU court over hate speech

Facebook suffers legal blow in EU court over hate speech
Facebook on Wednesday was dealt a major blow in the EU's top court, which ruled that national courts in Europe can order online platforms to remove defamatory content worldwide.

In a closely watched judgment, the European Court of Justice said EU law “does not preclude” courts from ordering “the removal of information or to block access worldwide,” a statement said.

The decision will be seen as a victory for EU regulators, who are ambitious to see US tech giants meet tightened European standards over hate speech and offencive content.

Last week, the same court decided that Google was not legally compelled to apply the EU's strict “right to be forgotten” rules globally, in a victory for the search giant.

The latest case was brought originally to an Austrian court by Greens party politician Eva Glawischnig, who requested the removal of Facebook posts that the judges found defamed her and could be seen by users of the social network around the world.

A higher Austrian court referred the case to the EU's top court for an opinion and the judgment, which cannot be appealed, will now be used as a reference Europe-wide.

In addition to the deletion of messages, the Greens had demanded Facebook provide information to determine the identity of people in fictitious accounts that often carried the most virulent comments.

The original complaint concerns messages from one of these fictitious accounts, which according to the Greens, had called Eva Glawischnig a “corrupt” person and which the social network refused to delete.

With the decision, Facebook and similar platforms such as Twitter, face a greater obligation to monitor their content and take down content found to be offensive or hateful.

EU-wide, so far online giants that also include Google's Youtube, have agreed to voluntarily takedown hateful or dangerous content, including those linked to terrorism, within 24 hours.

However, the EU is expected to propose tougher Europe-wide measures that could include fines if Facebook and others fail to comply with orders.

Four police killed in Paris stabbing, attacker shot dead

Four police killed in Paris stabbing, attacker shot dead
A man wielding a knife stabbed and killed four officers at the police headquarters in the heart of central Paris on Thursday, before being shot dead.

The premises were cordoned off after the lunchtime attack in the historic centre of Paris, usually thronged with tourists, and dozens of police and emergency vehicles had converged at the scene, AFP journalists reported.

At least one metro station in the vicinity of the building, which is close to Notre-Dame cathedral and other major tourist attractions, was closed.

Sources told AFP the attacker was shot dead by police in the courtyard of the building, where he was employed.

The man worked in an administrative capacity but it was not immediately clear what his precise work role was.

An emergency message was broadcast over loudspeakers at the courthouse next door, announcing “an attack” at the police headquarters and stating the area was “under surveillance”.

Scenes of 'panic'

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, who was due to visit Turkey later on Thursday, postponed his trip to visit the scene of the attack.

“People were running everywhere, there was crying everywhere,” said Emery Siamandi, an interpreter who was in the building when the attack happened.

“I heard a shot, I gathered it was inside,” he told AFP. “Moments later, I saw police officers crying. They were in a panic.”

Investigators suspect a workplace dispute sparked the deadliest attack on police in France in years, sources said, but there were no immediate further details.

The Paris prosecutor is at the scene, but anti-terror agencies have not been involved at this stage.

“Did he snap, or was there some other reason? It's still too early to say,” Loic Travers, head of the Alliance Police union for the Paris region, told BFM television.

Succession of attacks

There was no immediate indication of the possible motives of the attacker.

France has been rocked since 2015 by a succession of attacks blamed on jihadists, which have included both large synchronised assaults and isolated knife and gun attacks, killing more than 250 people. The country remains on high alert after these attacks.

In January 2015, two men armed with Kalashnikov rifles stormed the Paris offices of satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 people.

A policewoman was killed just outside Paris the following day, while a gunman took hostages at a Jewish supermarket, four of whom were killed.

On November 15 that year, France was hit by the worst terror attacks in its history.

Militant Islamic State (IS) group jihadists armed with assault rifles and explosives struck outside a France-Germany football match at the national stadium, Paris cafes, and the Bataclan concert hall in a coordinated assault that left 130 people dead and more than 350 wounded.

On July 14, 2016, a Tunisian ploughed a truck through a large crowd gathered for Bastille Day fireworks in the Mediterranean city of Nice. The attack killed 86 people and injured more than 400.

The attack at the police headquarters also came as tension grows within the ranks of the police force, who have been stretched to the limit by policing the “yellow vest” protests against President Emmanuel Macron and have themselves been accused of heavy-handed tactics.

Thousands of French police officers demonstrated in Paris on Wednesday for better working conditions in a rare protest by the force, against the backdrop of a spike in suicides within their ranks.

Organisers estimated that 27,000 officers took part, out of 150,000 police staff nationwide. No independent estimate was available.

Hong Kong flash-mob rallies erupt as anger mounts over shot protester

Hong Kong flash-mob rallies erupt as anger mounts over shot protester
Flash-mob rallies broke out in Hong Kong on Wednesday as anger mounted over police shooting a teenage protester who attacked officers in a dramatic escalation of the violent unrest that has engulfed the territory for months.

A large crowd of demonstrators, including office workers in shirts and suits, mustered in a park and then began marching through the city's commercial district in an unsanctioned rally, chanting anti-police and anti-government slogans.

Hundreds of students also staged a sit-in at the school of 18-year-old Tsang Chi-kin, who was shot in the chest by a policeman as he and a group of masked protesters attacked officers with umbrellas and poles.

The international finance hub has been left reeling from the shooting, the first time a demonstrator has been struck with a live round in nearly four months of increasingly violent pro-democracy protests.

Tuesday witnessed the worst clashes of the summer as China celebrated 70 years of Communist Party rule with a massive military parade in Beijing.

The spiralling violence underscored seething public anger against Beijing's rule and shifted the spotlight from China's carefully choreographed birthday party.

Running battles raged for hours across multiple locations as hardcore protesters hurled rocks and petrol bombs. Police responded for the most part with tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon.

As criticism rose the police launched a spirited defence of their colleague at a press conference on Wednesday saying he feared for his life and the safety of his colleagues “He only had one option, that is to fire the gun to immediately resolve the danger,” deputy commissioner Mr Tang Ping-keung told reporters.

But protest groups said the officer charged into the melee with his firearm drawn and failed to fire a warning shot as they condemned the increasing use of live rounds.

“The people of Hong Kong are sick and tired of having mere words of condemnation as their only shields against lethal bullets and rifles,” a masked protester said at a press conference near Tsang's school.

The shooting was captured on video that quickly went viral.

Opinion towards the shooting has largely cemented along ideological divides with pro-democracy activists condemning the police and establishment figures calling it a justified use of force.

Tsang, who was filmed trying to strike the officer with a pole as he was shot, was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition but authorities said his condition had since improved.

A friend and classmate of Tsang, who gave his first name Marco, said the 18-year-old was a keen basketballer who was infuriated by sliding freedoms in Hong Kong and the police response to the protests.

“If he sees any problems or anything unjust, he would face it bravely, speak up against it, instead of bearing it silently,” Marco told AFP.

Police said 30 officers were injured in the National Day clashes, including some who suffered chemical burns from a corrosive liquid that was thrown at them by protesters. The liquid also wounded some journalists.

Hospital authorities said more than 70 people were admitted on Tuesday.

Outlining the sheer extent of Tuesday's clashes, police revealed that they arrested 269 people, ranging from 12 to 71 years old — the largest daily toll since protests began.

They also unleashed a record 1,400 rounds of tear gas, 900 rubber bullets, 230 sponge rounds, 190 bean bag rounds and five live rounds as warning shots.

To compare, police fired 1,000 tear gas canisters in the first two months of the protests.

Hong Kong's courts are rapidly filling up.

On Wednesday, 96 protesters arrested on Sunday appeared in court charged with rioting.

Ages ranged from 14 to 39 and while the majority were students in their twenties, other occupations listed included a waitress, a teacher, a doctor, an advertising executive and a cook.

The protests were ignited by a now-scrapped plan to allow extraditions to the mainland.

But after Beijing and local leaders took a hard line they snowballed into a wider movement calling for democratic freedoms and police accountability.

With Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam seemingly unwilling or unable to find a political solution, police have been left to battle increasingly radicalised protesters.

Sentiment is hardening on all sides.

Protesters and some local residents routinely shout “triads” at officers who often respond by calling demonstrators “cockroaches”.

The protest movement's main demands are an independent inquiry into police actions, an amnesty for those arrested and universal suffrage.

But Beijing and Lam have said they are unwilling to meet those demands.

If you hover the cursor on the doodle, you will see ‘Waheed Murad’s 81st birthday’ written in the popup text.

Pakistani cinema is indebted to the great film actor, producer and script writer who charmed the cinema-goers with his expressions, attractive personality, tender voice and unusual acting talent.

Much before Rajesh Khanna ruled Bollywood as a romantic hero, Murad had kept the film-viewers mesmerised with his magical aura. As such, he is considered one of the most famous and influential actors of South Asia. The world gave him the title of ‘Chocolate Hero’.

Born in Karachi, Sindh, he started his filmy career when he was 21 years old. He landed in his first role as a cameo in 1959 in the film Saathi.

He started working as a producer at his father's established 'Film Art' in 1961. As a producer, his first film was Insaan Badalta Hai in 1961.

His naughty facial expressions and gestures, bold romanticism and alluring performance style during picturization of songs made him immensely popular.

One of his films is Armaan, which was produced by him, made a pivotal impact on the sub-continental film industry such that the Pakistani film industry was considered as the rising star and the film made him a superstar overnight.

He won many awards for recognition of his services to the film industry while in November 2010, after a long period of 27 years after his death, the Pakistani government awarded him with 'Sitara-e-Imtiaz', the third-highest honour and civilian award by the State of Pakistan, given in the fields of literature, arts, sports, medicine, or science.

Murad produced eleven films under his father’s established ‘Film Art’. He was the youngest film producer in the industry at that time. Most of his produced films were either Golden Jubilee or Silver Jubilee.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, he produced films like Insaan badalta hai (1961) (his first film as producer), Armaan (1966), Ehsaan (1967), Naseeb apna apna (1970) and Mastana mahi (Punjabi film of 1971). However, after Mastana Mahi he produced no film except Hero which was produced in the 1980s and was released after his death.

Murad’s acting style has the legacy of being taught in Indian and Pakistani film institutions. He is considered as one of the pioneering Rock n’ Roll stars of Pakistan. His fans term him as the cultural icon of the Pakistani Film Industry.

Progress on Afghan peace talks to be reviewed during Taliban visit: FO

Progress on Afghan peace talks to be reviewed during Taliban visit
Afghan Taliban's visit to Islamabad would provide the opportunity to review the progress made under US-Taliban peace talks so far, and discuss the possibilities of resuming the paused political settlement process in Afghanistan, Pakistan Foreign Office said on Wednesday.

The foreign office said in a statement that Pakistan extended an invitation to the Taliban's Political Commission in Doha for the visit.

The statement said program for the Taliban delegation's meeting with the foreign minister was being finalised.

A delegation of Afghan Taliban, headed by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, has agreed to meet United States Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad in Pakistan.

The delegation is said to have arrived in Islamabad and is likely to meet with US envoy Khalilzad, who arrived with a five-member delegation a day earlier.

According to sources, the Taliban said they did not back down from the talks, that broke down last month, but the US did. They added that their leadership is ready to meet the US envoy again.

Earlier, Afghan Taliban spokesperson Suhail Shaheen said on Twitter that the delegation had been given a formal invitation and that they would discuss “important issues” with Pakistani officials during their visit.

Taliban officials have in recent days visited Russia, China, and Iran, with the latest stop on a tour of regional powers being Pakistan, after the Afghanistan peace process broke down.

The US and Taliban said last month that they were close to reaching a deal, despite concern among some US security officials and within the Afghan government that a US withdrawal could plunge the country into even more conflict.

But US President Donald Trump halted the talks following the death of a US soldier and 11 other people in a Taliban bomb attack in Kabul.

Former NA Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri De-notified by Election Commission

ECP denotifies Qasim Suri from National Assembly
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has denotified former deputy speaker Qasim Suri as the Member of National Assembly (MNA) following delcaration of his disqualification by an election tribunal last Friday.

An official document has been issued by the commission, stating Qasim Suri is denotified in view of the verdict of election tribunal that ordered to suspend NA membership of the politician.

It may be noted here that an election tribunal had declared Suri’s victory from National Assembly seat NA-265 (Quetta-II) as null and void on September 27. The tribunal also ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold re-polling in the constituency.

Later, the former deputy speaker Qasim Suri had challenged his disqualification from the National Assembly seat in Supreme Court on October 1. Advocate Naeem Bukhari filed a petition in the top court pleading to declare the decision of the election tribunal as void.

The counsel said in the plea that irregularities in the electoral process could not be attributed to his client. The petition also pleaded the court for giving an early date of hearing.

Balochistan National Party’s (BNP) Lashkari Raisani had challenged the victory of Suri, who contested the 2018 general election on a ticket of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP). The tribunal had reserved its verdict after hearing arguments of both the parties on Sept 14.

Red meat unhealthy? Maybe not, after all

Red meat unhealthy
Cutting back on red meat is standard medical advice to prevent cancer and heart disease — but a review of dozens of studies has concluded that the potential risk is low and evidence uncertain.

In new guidelines published on Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, a panel of researchers from seven countries suggested that "adults continue current unprocessed red meat consumption."

The advice — which immediately drew a sharp reaction from other experts — added that adults should also "continue current processed meat consumption."

The research, published in the journal edited by the American College of Physicians, analysed multiple studies that, taken together, showed reducing red meat consumption by three servings per week could lower cancer mortality by seven deaths per 1,000 people.

Researchers said any such decline was modest and that they had found only a "low" degree of certainty about the statistic.

They added that the quality of evidence linking processed meat with cardiovascular diseases and diabetes was "very low."

"There are very small risk reductions in cancer, heart disease and diabetes, however, the evidence is uncertain," Bradley Johnston, an epidemiology professor at Canada's Dalhousie University and director of the NutriRECS group that put together the guidelines, told AFP.

"So there may be a reduction — or there may not be.

"People need to make their own decisions. We are giving them the best estimate of the truth."

Steaks, sausages back on menu?

The researchers said they want to change the "old school" approach of giving general nutritional recommendations and to bring more focus on evidence of individual benefit.

"People should look at this and hopefully make more well-informed personal choices, rather than being told what to do by authoritative organisations," Johnston said.

But eating less red meat and processed meat has been a cornerstone of dietary guidance for decades in many countries and from leading health groups.

The World Health Organisation International Agency for Research on Cancer says that processed meat is carcinogenic, while red meat is "probably carcinogenic."

In response to the latest guidelines, the World Cancer Research Fund said it would not change its advice.

"We maintain our confidence in the rigorous research conducted for 30 years," said its director of research, Giota Mitrou.

Marji McCullough, epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society, said the researchers had taken into account people's personal values and preferences.

"It's kind of like saying: 'we know helmets can save lives, but some people still prefer the feeling of the wind in their hair when they ride bikes. And let's face it, most people won't crash'," she said.

"But everyone agrees you should wear a helmet."

Kevin McConway, emeritus professor of applied statistics at Britain's Open University, said the lack of hard scientific evidence meant there were few clear answers.

"Depressingly, all this tends to indicate that after all these years and all these millions of research participants, we still don't know much," he said.

Babar Azam becomes fastest Pakistani to 1,000 runs in a calendar year

Pakistan’s flamboyant batsman Babar Azam
Pakistan’s flamboyant batsman Babar Azam on Monday completed 1,000 runs in the calendar year 2019 to become the first Pakistani batsman to reach the milestone since 2013.

Azam reached this milestone in the 19th inning of the year making him the fastest batsman from Pakistan to complete 1,000 runs in any calendar year.

He achieved this feat just as he completed his 54th run during Pakistan’s second ODI against Sri Lanka here at the National Stadium.

The right-handed batsman is the 10th Pakistani batsman overall to score one thousand runs in ODIs in a calendar year, and the first since 2013.

The duo of Misbah ul Haq and Mohammad Hafeez had scored 1,000 ODI runs (Misbah 1,373 and Hafeez 1,301) in 2013.

Since then, Pakistan batsmen had to wait for six years to reach this milestone.

Mohammad Yousuf of Pakistan has the most feats of 1,000 calendar year runs in ODIs by the fact that he achieved it on three different occasions, in 2000, 2002 and 2003.

Aamir Sohail, Ijaz Ahmed, Inzamam ul Haq and Hafeez have also achieved this feat twice while Javed Miandad, Misbah-ul-Haq, Saeed Anwar and Younis Khan reached this milestone just once in past.

Babar, 24, has already recorded several Pakistan’s ODI records to his name. He is considered as one of the best white ball players of recent days.

Babar Azam reaches the milestone in 19th inning of the year which makes him fastest from Pakistan to complete 1000 runs in any calendar year.
