Most children and adolescents are spared from severe COVID-19, but among those who do require hospitalization, temporary neurologic effects are common, researchers found.

In their study of 1,695 patients age 21 or younger hospitalized for COVID-19 or a COVID-19-related illness known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome, 365 – or 22% – had neurologic complications, including 43 (12%) with life-threatening neurologic disorders such as strokes and central nervous system infections.

Other neurologic effects included seizures, headache, weakness, loss of smell and taste, and altered awareness or confusion. Neurologic involvement in most patients was transient and resolved by the time they left the hospital, according to a report published on Friday in JAMA Neurology.

Because they only studied hospitalized children, the range and rate of such complications may be an underestimate of the actual issue, the authors said.

They said more research is needed both to determine the true incidence and to track these children over the long term.

Researchers make focal points with gold particles to fix visual weakness

Researchers make focal points with gold particles to fix visual weakness
Imagine seeing the world in muted shades — gray sky, gray grass. Some people with color blindness see everything this way, though most can’t see specific colors. Tinted glasses can help, but they can’t be used to correct blurry vision. And dyed contact lenses currently in development for the condition are potentially harmful and unstable.

Now, at Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa University, researchers report infusing contact lenses with gold nanoparticles to create a safer way to see colors.

In colour blindness, the most common kind is protanopia and deuteranopia — difficulty separating red and green colours.

Usually, for remedying this, people wear special glasses which have a tinted glass that enables them to see the specific colour that they can’t otherwise see but not only are these lenses really bulky, but they cannot be used for correcting other vision problems simultaneously.

Moreover, researchers in the past have also worked on developing lenses to help bridge the gap between the two, however, the dye that was used to create the special tint in the lenses were not the safest, nor were the lenses as durable.

However, now, researchers from Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa University have developed a novel lens infused with particles of gold. These lenses are non-toxic and this method of infusing gold in glass has been going on for centuries, in order to create cranberry glass as they scatter light in a different manner.

For developing the lens, the researchers infused gold nanoparticles in a hydrogel. This resulted in the production of a red-tinted gel that filters wavelengths of light between 520 and 580 nanometres — the section of the spectrum where red and green wavelengths overlap.

As per the researchers, the most effective contact lenses were made with 40-nanometre wide gold particles that neither got stuck together nor passed through more light than necessary.

Researchers have successfully completed their initial study and now they’re conducting clinical trials to understand how comfortable is the experience wearing these lenses. They are yet to be assessed in clinical trials.

Scuffle between PML-N leaders, PTI workers outside the Parliament

Scuffle between PML-N leaders, PTI workers outside the Parliament
The situation outside the Parliament House remained tensed as political workers of rival parties came face-to-face after scuffle between Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leaders and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists during a press conference

The PTI workers have surrounded the PML-N central leaders including Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Musadik Malik, Marriyum Aurangzeb, Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Sanaullah and others when they are addressing a press conference outside the Parliament.

The PTI workers holding placards to support Prime Minister Imran Khan and slogans to condemn the corrupt practices of the past rulers were seen standing behind the PML-N workers during the media conference.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Musadik Malik went furious over the interruption in their media talks. Abbasi vented his anger by slapping a PTI worker twice who was standing in front of him. The worker slapped him back, however, the security officials came in and took out Abbasi and Malik from the scene.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi later came back and criticised that they did not want any security and whoever having the courage to face him should come forward. He said that political worker doesn’t abuse anyone and prefers to respond to opponents in the election.

He alleged that the ongoing session of the National Assembly was unconstitutional and illegal. He blamed the president, prime minister and speaker NA for the tensed situation outside the parliament.

PML-N workers also gathered and started raising slogans, turning the situation more tensed outside the Parliament.

PM Imran Khan successfully secure the vote of confidence

Prime Minister Imran Khan
The process of voting for reposing confidence in Prime Minister Imran Khan has concluded in the National Assembly as the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) moves to counter the opposition’s ability to challenge the legitimacy of the incumbent premier’s government

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi tabled the resolution in the lower house on which voting is being held. The premier needs 172 votes to win the confidence vote.

Prime Minister Imran Khan reached the assembly hall shortly before the session commencement time. PTI lawmakers are also present in the assembly.

“That this House reposes confidence in the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Mr Imran Khan, as required under clause (7) of Article 91 of the Constitution Islamic Republic of Pakistan," said the foreign minister as he read out the resolution.

Following the tabling of the vote of confidence resolution, NA Speaker Asad Qaiser read out the procedure for voting.

Bells were then sounded in the NA in order to let all lawmakers present outside the hall to make their way inside, following which the doors were sealed.

After reading out the resolution, the NA speaker directed the legislators who wanted to cast a vote to make their way to another chamber inside the lower house in order for their votes to be recorded.

Due to the united opposition boycotting the voting process in the National Assembly, all opposition seats remain empty.

The 30th NA session – on a single point agenda – will make it clear whether PM Imran commands the trust of the house and whether the lawmakers who allegedly ditched the ruling candidate on the general seat in the recently-held Senate election stick to their stand.

PTI lawmakers started arrived at the assembly earlier and the party focused on ensuring full attendance of allied and party members.

The opposition alliance – Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) – stunned the PTI government on March 3 when PDM candidate Yousuf Raza Gillani pulled off an unexpected victory against the ruling party’s Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in the Senate elections on the general seat from Islamabad.

The five-vote victory in the capital’s Senate election brought the defining moment in the otherwise battle of narratives going on for months between the government and the PDM.

But before the opposition could move a vote of no-confidence, PM Imran announced that he would take a vote of confidence from the house. Countering the government’s move, the PDM announced a boycott of Saturday’s NA session.

Temperatures rise outside parliament

Outside the parliament in the red zone, PML-N protesters and PTI supporters engaged in a short brawl and shouted slogans against each other. PML-N's Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal and Musadiq Malik were among the PML-N leaders present in the scene.

The incident occurred when PML-N leaders tried to address the media, PTI workers surrounded the PML-N leaders and a scuffle broke out. A large crowd has now gathered at D-Chowk and some political workers have entered the Parliament Lodges.

A large contingent of law enforcers has arrived at the scene and have managed to separate the political workers of the two parties.

‘PM Imran will start a new political life today’

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed said he believes that Prime Minister Imran Khan would get the vote of confidence today.

“Today is a big day,” he said adding that PM Imran would start a new political life after today's vote.

It is unfortunate that the Opposition was not participating in today’s session, the minister lamented. “Imran Khan’s decision was a big step,” he said referring to the confidence vote.

Talking about the recent Senate elections, the minister said that the government won the majority of seats.

Numbers required

A total of 172 votes in the 342-member house are needed for a simple majority and to stay in power. The ruling coalition had 181 members but after the resignation of one of its MNA, Faisal Vowda, the number has come down to 180. The opposition coalition has 160 members in the house.

Party-wise, the PTI had 157 members in NA but following the resignation of a lawmaker, it has now 156 members while its allies include seven MNAs from MQM, five each from the PML-Q and the BAP, three from the GDA and one MNA each from the AML and the JWP.

Two of the four independents are also members of the ruling coalition; making a grand total of 180. Since the opposition has already boycotted the session, all the ruling party needs to do is to get all those standing with the government to vote for the PM.

Why is a vote of confidence needed?

According to Article 91(7) the “prime minister shall hold office during the pleasure of the president, but the president shall not exercise his powers under this clause unless he is satisfied that the prime minister does not command the confidence of the majority of the members of the National Assembly, in which case he shall summon the National Assembly and require the prime minister to obtain a vote of confidence from the assembly.”

Section 36 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007, explains that whenever the prime minister has to obtain a vote of confidence under clause (7) of Article 91, voting shall be recorded in accordance with the procedure set out in the Second Schedule, which defines the procedure for recording of votes.

Since all elections under Section 226 of the Constitution, other than those of the prime minister and the chief ministers, are held by secret ballot, the voting process will be open and if the premier fails to get simple majority – 172 votes out of the 342 votes – he is sent packing and the cabinet is dissolved.

Under Article 58(1), the president can dissolve the National Assembly if so advised by the prime minister but it can only happen before the house goes for a vote of confidence and a prime minister against whom a resolution for a vote of no-confidence has been passed can’t dissolve the assembly.

Article 58(2) states that “Notwithstanding anything contained in clause (2) of Article 48, the president may also dissolve the National Assembly in his discretion where, a vote of no-confidence having been passed against the prime minister, no other member of the National Assembly command the confidence of the majority of the members of the National Assembly in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, as ascertained in a session of the National Assembly summoned for the purpose.”

Article 91(8) states that the prime minister may, by writing under his hand addressed to the president, resign his office.

Voting procedure

The procedure for vote of confidence on the prime minister has been clearly defined in the Second Schedule of the NA Rules of 2007.

The Second Schedule states that before the voting commences, the speaker shall direct that the bells be rung for five minutes to enable members not present in the chamber to be present.

Immediately after the bells stop ringing, all the entrances to the lobby shall be locked and the assembly staff posted at each entrance shall not allow any entry or exit through those entrances until the voting has concluded.

The speaker shall then read out the resolution before the assembly and ask the members who wish to vote in favour of the resolution to pass in single file through the entrance where tellers shall be posted to record the votes.

On reaching the desk of the tellers, each member shall, in turn, call out the division number allotted to him under the rules. The tellers shall then mark off his number on the division list simultaneously calling out the name of the member.

In order to ensure that his vote has been properly recorded, the member shall not move off until he has clearly heard the teller call out his name.

After a member has recorded his vote, he shall not return to the chamber until bells are rung under paragraph. When the speaker finds that all the members who wished to vote have recorded their votes, he shall announce that the voting has concluded.

Thereupon the secretary shall cause the division list to be collected, count the recorded votes and present the result of the count to the speaker.

The speaker shall then direct that the bells be rung for two minutes to enable the members to return to the chamber. After the bells stop ringing, the speaker shall announce the result to the assembly.

Gold rate falls 8.1% in a month

Precious Metal Gold
The downward trend in the prices of gold continued on Friday when the rates of the precious metal fell Rs1,450 per tola in the local market

The gold rate has fallen over 8% in a month as investors are turning away from the safe bet commodity with COVID-19 fear subsiding, according to traders quoted in a The News report published on Saturday.

The falling trend also takes a cue from the international market where gold rates decreased to $1,696 per ounce from $1,814 on February 5. In the local market, gold prices decreased 8.1% or Rs9,050 to Rs102,750 per tola from Rs111,800 per tola on February 5.

According to the All Sindh Saraf Jewellers Association, gold rates in the local market moved down to Rs102,750 per tola. Similarly, 10 gram gold price dropped Rs1,243 to Rs88,092.

Bullion trader Shafi Khan told the publication that gold prices are declining regularly.

“Gold prices increased because of fear and now normalcy is being witnessed,” Khan said. “Prices of oil and other commodities are increasing while silver and gold are coming down in the international market.”

Silver rates dropped Rs10 to Rs1,340 per tola while price of 10 gram silver also decreased Rs8.57 to Rs1,148.83.

According to Khan, new buying might be witnessed in the coming week if the downward trend continues and lowers below Rs100,000 per tola.

An analyst said the rupee appreciated against the US dollar, which affected the gold prices.

The local currency increased 6.7% or Rs11.3 against the dollar since August 26 last when it hit a record low of 168.43. The rupee has increased by 0.57% so far this week.

“Though local buying has not increased yet, it is likely to improve in coming days,” said a gold trader. “When the international market would come down to $1,680 per ounce, it would be a better option for buyers to invest.”

Twitter about to announce 'undo send' feature for paying users

Social Media App Twitter
Twitter Inc is testing an “undo send” function that would give users a short time to withdraw a tweet before it is posted, the company confirmed

App researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who discovers unannounced social media features by looking at the sites’ code, tweeted an animation showing a tweet with a spelling error where an ‘undo’ button was available before a short timer ran out.

A Twitter spokeswoman said the feature was being tested as part of the company’s exploration of how subscriptions could work on the platform. She said Twitter would be testing and iterating possible paid-for features over time.

Twitter has said it is working on paid subscription models, which would reduce its dependence on ad revenue, including a “super follow” feature to let users charge their followers for access to exclusive content which will launch this year.

CEO Jack Dorsey has previously said the site would likely never have an “edit button,” a feature users have long sought.

But Twitter has been introducing more prompts as users send tweets such as asking them if they want to read an article before sharing it, and experimenting with allowing people to revise a tweet reply before it is published if it uses harmful language.

The company reportedly included a possible “undo send” feature in a user survey last year asking which features people would like to have available through a subscription model.

An anti-narcotics court on Saturday granted an exemption plea of ML-N Punjab president Rana Sanaullah in drugs recovery case

The court, presided over by Judge Shakir Hassan, also issued notices to the persons who had given bail surety of accused.

The court also summoned Rana Sanaullah in the next hearing of the case for indictment in the case.

In the previous hearing the court had ordered the authorities concerned to de-freeze Rana Sanaullah’s salary account on an application of the PML-N MNA seeking to de-freeze his bank accounts.

The court ordered that the account Sanaullah uses to receive his National Assembly salary be de-frozen with immediate effect.

His lawyer had contended before the court that the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) has got four different bank accounts of his client frozen, including the National Assembly salary account, due to which he is facing hardships in managing his day-to-day financial matters.

The counsel pleaded with the court to order de-freezing Rana Sanaullah’s salary account.

Azam ‘Ganja’ was allegedly a close aide of notorious criminal Junaid aka Bulldog and a key member of the target killers’ team of the political party’s Korangi sector, according to CTD spokesperson.

The deceased man was allegedly involved in various criminal cases. The spokesperson said that Azam committed murders over the directives of unit and sector between 2012 and 2013 as he killed a person near a police check post in Tasveer Mahal and targeted an activist of MQM Haqiqi Farooq in Landhi.

Over the directives of the sector in-charge, Azam Ganja killed a worker of his own political party in Korangi.

Two cases against the deceased target killer were registered with the CTD and he was declared proclaimed offender by the court.

According to CTD, a pistol was recovered from his possession which was sent for forensic examination.

Democrats reach deal on jobless aid in Biden’s COVID-19 bill

Capitol Hill USA
Democrats in the U.S. Senate said Friday they had resolved their differences over unemployment aid in President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 aid bill, enabling them to move forward with the sweeping package after hours of delay

The deal would scale back the level of jobless benefits provided in the version of the bill that passed the House of Representatives last week and set up new tax breaks for people receiving them, according to Democratic aides.

“We have reached a compromise that enables the economy to rebound quickly while also protecting those receiving unemployment benefits from being hit with (an) unexpected tax bill next year,” said Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, a key centrist who had pushed to scale back the aid.

The compromise among Democrats, who control the chamber by the narrowest possible margin, set the stage for a resumption of a potentially long process in which Republicans were expected to offer scores of amendments to try to change the bill. The proceeding was expected to last late into the evening, with a final vote possibly not coming until Saturday.

Biden supports the agreement, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

Unemployment aid was just one of many friction points in the sweeping bill. An attempt to raise the minimum wage fell short earlier in the day, and more votes were expected in a debate that could extend into the weekend.

The legislation currently calls for $400 per week in federal jobless benefits through Aug. 29, on top of state benefits, to help Americans who have lost jobs amid the economic trauma caused by the coronavirus.

The compromise would lower that weekly benefit to $300, but extend it through Sept. 6, according to a Democratic aide. The first $10,200 would be tax-free.

The agreement also extends a tax break for businesses for an additional year through 2026.

Democrats hold a slim majority in the Senate and House of Representatives. Congress is scrambling to complete work on the legislation so Biden can sign it into law before March 14, when some existing pandemic-related benefits are due to expire.

Senate Democrats must keep all 50 of their members on board, allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to cast the deciding vote if no Republicans support the bill.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is walking a tightrope as he tries to steer the bill through the Senate, aiming to keep liberals and moderates happy while not alienating House Democrats.

So far, Senate Democrats have stripped out the House-passed minimum wage increase and modified $350 billion in state and local aid to steer more money to smaller states. If the Senate passes the bill, the House would have to sign off on those changes before Biden could sign it into law.

Republicans were one vote down after Senator Dan Sullivan left Washington en route home to Alaska for a family funeral.

MINIMUM WAGE HIKE REJECTED
Senators rejected a proposal by Senator Bernie Sanders to more than double the $7.25-per-hour federal minimum wage to $15 over five years. Sanders called the current level a “starvation” wage that has been in place for more than a decade.

The Senate fell far short of the 60 votes needed to overrule the Senate parliamentarian’s decision that a minimum wage increase cannot be included in the bill because of special rules governing debate.

Those rules allow for advancing the emergency spending bill, which the Biden administration has said is needed to stem the continuing economic fallout from the pandemic, with only a simple majority of supporters in the 100-member Senate, instead of 60 votes needed for most bills to clear procedural hurdles.

Democrats pledged to continue pursuing the minimum wage increase in separate legislation.

As Congress raced to approve the bill, the U.S. Labor Department reported on Friday that U.S. employment surged in February, adding 379,000 jobs, significantly higher than many economists had expected.

The U.S. unemployment rate, while still high at 6.2% last month, was down from 6.3% in January.

With Senate Republicans so far moving in lock-step against the bill, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called the legislation “a poorly-targeted rush job,” and said the U.S. economy did not need the stimulus provided in the bill.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Friday’s jobs data showed the country would not return to pre-pandemic employment levels for two years, with 9.5 million people still out of work.

The relief legislation includes funding for vaccines and medical supplies, extends jobless assistance and provides a new round of emergency financial aid to households, small businesses and state and local governments.

Opinion polls indicate broad public support for the package.

Opposition to boycott NA session on PM Imran's vote of confidence: Fazl

Pakistan Democratic Movement chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman press conference along with Maryam Nawaz and Bilawal Bhutto
Pakistan Democratic Movement chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said on Friday that no opposition member would attend the National Assembly session scheduled for Saturday, in which Prime Minister Imran Khan will seek a vote of confidence.

The announcement from the chief of the 10-party opposition alliance comes a day after the premier delivered an address to the nation, explaining why he was seeking a vote of confidence in the wake of the Senate elections in which the opposition managed to stage an upset.

"Tomorrow a session has been called in which no member of the opposition will take part," Rehman said while addressing a press conference in Sukkur. He added that the opposition will appoint a person to keep a lookout during the session for the "drama they are doing there".

He said Yousuf Raza Gilani's victory was itself a no-confidence motion against the premier.

Rehman, who is also the chief of JUI-F, claimed that President Arif Alvi in his summary to summon Saturday's session had essentially stated that Prime Minister Imran had "lost the trust of the majority" and he, therefore, needed to seek a vote of confidence.

"So when the president talks about losing trust to call the session of the National Assembly, then this further strengthens the stance of the opposition," he said.

After the opposition's boycott, Rehman said, "this session will have no political importance" and the PTI government "will not be considered the representative government of this nation".

He said the PTI had been ruling with "a fake majority" until now and the same would be clearly exposed by the opposition boycott of the "one-sided proceedings".

The PDM chief said the tone in which Prime Minister Imran addressed the nation last night "reflected his defeat".

He said according to Imran, bidding had taken place in the Senate elections and asked the premier whom he was blaming for the same. "He is saying his own PTI members are sellouts," he added.

The government had announced Prime Minister Imran's decision to seek a vote of confidence hours after the ruling coalition suffered an upset on the Senate seat for the federal capital where Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh lost to the opposition’s joint candidate Gilani.

Rejected votes played a significant role in the upset with Gilani securing 169 votes as against 164 bagged by Shaikh, with the number of rejected votes exceeding the margin of victory.

'State of panic'
Rehman said Imran's vote of confidence on Saturday will also include the votes of 18 government MNAs who allegedly voted in favour of the opposition in the Senate polls, adding that "without this, it is not possible that he receives the vote of confidence with a majority of one or two people."

"When some people had sold their loyalties in the no-confidence vote against [Senate Chairman Sadiq] Sanjrani, this same Imran Khan had termed it the voice of their conscience," he said. "Today, why does he equate his own members not voting [for the PTI] to being sold?"

Responding to Prime Minister Imran's remarks that he would bring out the people against the opposition if he lost the vote of confidence, Rehman said: "Whom will you bring the people out against? Against the PDM? Why? On what grounds?

"People will not ask you about this, people will ask you why you destroyed the economy [and] why you weakened different institutions by sacking workers."

He alleged that the prime minister had blamed the ECP over the setback suffered by his party in order to "exert pressure [on the ECP] in the foreign funding case" against the PTI. "We know all of their tactics and in whichever colour you wear the garb, we recognise your height. So the nation can't be fooled any more," he added.

Asked whether the government lawmakers who voted in favour of the opposition were in contact with the PDM ahead of the NA session, Rehman replied in the negative.

He said the multiple meetings held by Prime Minister Imran after the Senate polls reflected the government's "state of panic".

"Everything has escaped from their hands and thus in Pakistan currently there is no government or executive. They (government) should immediately call for fresh elections and a real representative government of the nation should come," he claimed.

In response to a question, Rehman said the PDM's future plan of action, including the strategy for a planned long march, will be decided in a meeting of the alliance's leadership on March 8 in Islamabad.

ECP’s press release response seems ‘inappropriate’: Fawad

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Shibli Faraz, Fawad Chaudhry and senator Ali Zafar
Reacting to the press release issued by the ECP over allegations raised by PM Imran Khan, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry on Friday said press release statement response seems ‘inappropriate.”

Addressing a press conference along with the Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Shibli Faraz, Fawad Chaudhry said that the federal government respects every state institution of the country including the Election Commission of Pakistan.

“ECP is respectable to us and will remain”, said Fawad and added that institutions show their impartiality through practical steps, not through press releases.

PM said horse-trading during Senate polls was not stopped, was that the matter of shame for ECP, asked Fawad.

The minister while extending every possible support to the ECP, urged for a joint mechanism devised by the ECP and the government to stop rigging in the polls.

He said that the directions of the Supreme Court for holding fair and free Senate elections were neglected by the ECP. We are not planning to hold any protest in front of the supreme electoral body, Fawad added.

The video of Ali Haider Gilani, the audio of Nasir Hussain Shah and Maryam’s statement about PML-N ticket are the proofs of rigging, which needs to be investigated.

Fawad Chaudhry said that we are confident that Prime Minister Imran Khan will successfully obtain the vote of confidence from the National Assembly.

So far our 177 MNAs have reached the federal capital. The members of PTI and coalition partners have assured their support to PM Imran Khan in the National Assembly in obtaining vote of confidence.

Earlier in the day, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had expressed its disappointment over the allegations raised by PM Imran Khan during his address to the Nation.

Will not come under any sort of pressure: ECP responds to PM Imran Khan's criticism

The Election Commission of Pakistan
The Election Commission of Pakistan on Friday expressed disappointment over Prime Minister Imran Khan's hard-hitting speech and statements from a few cabinet members from a day earlier, stressing that the Senate elections were held according to the law and Constitution.

In a written statement, the commission said that it has "never come under any sort of pressure and God willing, will not in future as well".

"We cannot ignore the law and the Constitution to please anyone," said the ECP its statement.

The written statement from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on PM Imran Khan and the government's criticism of the Senate elections.

Referring to former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's victory over Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, the ECP said it 'rejects' the analysis and criticism that is being levelled over one result of the Senate elections.

"This is the beauty of democracy and independent elections and the secret ballot which the entire nation witnessed, which was according to the Constitution," it said.

The ECP said that it had heard all delegations that had called on it to discuss election-related matters and conducted a detailed review of their concerns and recommendations ahead of the Senate polls.

"The election commission hears everyone but fulfills its responsibilities in accordance with the law and Constitution and takes decisions independently, not under any sort of pressure," the statement read.

The ECP wondered why elections for the upper house of the parliament, which were held on the same day and managed by the same ECP staff, were accepted by critics where they had won but rejected where they lost.

"Is this not an open case of contradiction?" asked the ECP.

The ECP urged critics of the Senate elections to come forth with evidence and then accuse the commission of any wrongdoing. "Let us carry on with our work, don't sling mud on national institutions," read the ECP's statement.

The ECP had convened an important meeting today to review PM Imran Khan's speech, who had levelled serious allegations on the role of the electoral body during the Senate polls.

The prime minister, in his televised speech, had slammed the ECP for not taking measures to ensure transparent polling and held it responsible for the illegal practice of buying and selling of votes as it did not introduce traceable ballots.

Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja summoned the meeting to review the statements and allegation levelled by the prime minister against the ECP.

All members of the ECP attended the meeting.

The commission had acquired the video of the premier's speech.

PM Imran took the ECP to task for failing to ensure a transparent election in his speech after the upset defeat of PTI candidate Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh for the Senate seat from Islamabad on Wednesday.

"Your biggest responsibility is a transparent election and it is your constitutional responsibility," he said to the ECP.

"Why did you go to the court and say there should be a secret ballot? Does the constitution ever allow a theft of votes and for bribery to occur like has been in the last 30 years?" the premier asked.

He said the court had allowed the Commission to hold a secret vote but have some sort of identification mechanism whereby the PTI could now have discovered the 15-16 lawmakers "who sold themselves off".

"You saved those criminals with this secret ballot and you hurt our democracy," he said, in indignation at the ECP's move to ignore the Supreme Court's provisions to identify the ballots.

"Did you not know it was your responsibility to investigate such incidents? All the agencies fall under you. This entire drama unfolded in front of everyone," he said, referring to the video where lawmakers can be seen shovelling currency notes into their bags.

"When the country's leadership takes and gives bribes, will you ask the common man to become honest then but do these things yourself?"

He quoted a Chinese saying that says "fish rots from the top".

"You allowed corruption to occur at the top, and this happened right before you, and you knew it would happen. I kept saying that markets have opened and there is an auction going on. And when the Supreme Court gave you a chance, what reason was there to not bar code a mere 1,500 ballots?" the premier asked in exasperation.

"You provided an opportunity for the country's democracy to be discredited [...] I ask you has the strength of our democracy gone up or down with this open horse-trading?" he went on to ask the ECP.

"Pakistan was the name of a great dream. It was meant to be an Islamic welfare state and Allama Iqbal said it will be a shining example for the world.

"Now this video has come and you have no idea how much money has been used and how people sold their souls and how our politics was corrupted," PM Imran Khan said.

"And if such people come into power, how will they serve the nation or recover our nation's wealth? [...] And then they say corruption is rampant in our country," he added.

Researchers find first space tropical storm above Earth

Researchers find first space tropical storm above Earth
Hurricanes are a common occurrence on Earth, they wreak havoc across oceans seasonally, and now they may cause chaos in the skies too.

Scientists have discovered the first space hurricane in Earth’s upper atmosphere. Hurricanes have been spotted in the lower atmosphere of planets, including Mars and Saturn and Jupiter, swirling masses have even been spotted on the sun, but this is the first time scientists have seen a hurricane in the upper atmosphere of a planet.

According to data from 2014 that has been analysed over the years and results available only now, scientists have discovered a phenomenon in the Earth’s upper atmosphere that’s called a space hurricane. This space hurricane, according to a report in The Hill, is a swirling masses of plasma that rains electrons, rather than water.

The hurricane occurred in August 2014, but the observations made by satellites were only recently uncovered.

Scientists suspect such hurricanes are more common both in Earth’s solar system and others.

As if humanity didn’t have enough weather phenomena to worry about, scientists have discovered a “space hurricane” that occurred over the Earth’s upper atmosphere for the first time, notes The Hill.

“Until now, it was uncertain that space plasma hurricanes even existed, so to prove this with such a striking observation is incredible,” Mike Lockwood, space scientist at the University of Reading, said in a release.

The report says that this space hurricane occured under Interplanetary and geomagnetic conditions on 20th August 2014, for a period of more than 8 hours several hundred kilometres over the North pole.

With the new findings, scientists were able to create a 3-D image of the 1,000 km-wide swirling mass of plasma that rained electrons instead of water several hundred kilometers above the North Pole.

The space hurricane analysed by the team in Earth’s ionosphere was spinning in an anticlockwise direction, had multiple spiral arms, and lasted almost eight hours before gradually breaking down.

The team of scientists from China, the USA, Norway and the UK used observations made by four DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) satellites and a 3D magnetosphere modelling to produce the image. Their findings were published in Nature Communications.

New Zealanders take to the slopes as incredible tremors trigger wave waves

New Zealanders take to the slopes as incredible tremors trigger wave waves
Small tsunami waves triggered by a series of powerful earthquakes hit the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island on Friday and authorities said thousands of residents who had evacuated to higher ground could now return to their homes.

Officials had warned that waves could reach three metres (10 feet) above high tide levels after the quakes – the strongest a magnitude 8.1 – but the largest waves have now passed, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said as it downgraded the threat level.

“All people who evacuated can now return,” the agency said.

Video footage posted on social media showed surges of water entering a marina in Northland and on the North Island’s East Cape region.

Earlier on Friday, workers, students and residents in areas like Northland and Bay of Plenty, on the northern coast near Auckland, were put on alert after the three offshore earthquakes in less than eight hours triggered tsunami sirens and warnings.

An emergency alert was issued for all coastal areas around Auckland, a city of 1.7 million, where people were told to stay away from the water’s edge. There were no reports of damage or casualties from the quakes.

The third and strongest quake struck the Kermadec Islands, northeast of New Zealand’s North Island, on Friday morning, coming shortly after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in the same region. Earlier, a large 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck about 900 km (540 miles) away on the east of the North Island.

Linda Tatare, a resident of Anaura Bay, on the North Island’s east coast, said the small community of about 50 left for higher ground in the morning.

“Everyone, and their dogs, are up in the hills,” Tatare told Reuters.

“We are safe. We can all see our properties from here.”

Tsunami warnings were also put out for Pacific islands including New Caledonia and Vanuatu, while smaller tsunami waves may be recorded as far away as Antarctica and parts of South America, the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Scientists said Friday’s series of quakes was caused by tectonic movement on the boundary of the Australian and Pacific plates, part of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire that New Zealand sits on.

A decade ago, a magnitude 6.3 quake killed 185 people in the South Island city of Christchurch.

Australia issued a marine tsunami threat for Norfolk Island, a tiny Australian territory with about 1,750 residents, but said there was no threat to the mainland.

Norfolk Island residents in areas threatened by land inundation or flooding were advised to go to higher ground or inland, the Bureau of Meteorology said, as small tsunami waves impacted the coastline.

Dollar reaches its lowest price in one year

According to foreign currency dealers, the local currency appreciated by 38 paisa to 157.47 against the greenback. Yesterday, the dollar had closed at Rs157.85.

Economic analysts say the rupee appreciation is a result of foreign inflows in shape of remittances and loans.

Workers’ remittances exceeded $2 billion for a record eighth consecutive month in January 2021. Pakistan received $2.3 billion worth of remittances last month, up by 19 per cent as compared to January 2020. However, remittances slightly decreased as compared to $2.4 billion in December 2020.

Whereas, the current account deficit reduced to US$229 million in January 2021 from US$652 million last month. The SBP said that for the first seven months of the fiscal year 2020-21, the current account surplus is $912 million, a significant turnaround from the deficit of $2,544million during the same period last year.

Imran Khan has been rejected by his own MNAs, allies: Bilawal

PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has been rejected by his own MNAs and allies.

Bilawal was addressing a press conference in Islamabad, alongside PPP leader Yousaf Raza Gillani, during which he said that PM Imran Khan will have to correct his ways and "stop creating a drama."

"You will not be able to escape. We will not give you an NRO. And we will not spare you," he said.

Bilawal went on to say that the "incompetent, illegal government" only brought pain and suffering for the people of Pakistan and claimed that "every citizen of the country celebrated the victory of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)" after Gillani defeated PTI's Abdul Hafeez Sheikh in the Senate elections.

"The people of Pakistan celebrated the defeat of this puppet government."

He said that Imran Khan had promised to dissolve the assembly if he lost the Islamabad Senate seat but not when it's time to take the decision, the premier is scared.

"He's a coward and he is afraid of elections," Bilawal claimed. "After backtracking from the statement of dissolving the assembly, he is now creating a new drama by seeking a vote of confidence from the parliament."

"You will not be making decisions any more," Bilawal said to PM Khan. "I will tell you when and where will the no-confidence movement take place."

The PPP chairman said that the Opposition will carry on its fight against the incumbent government and will continue to expose its [wrongdoing], adding that "no one would be able to save the PTI-led government now."

Bilawal also claimed that he knows each and every MNA as well as the votes that were cast against him.

"I know which MNAs voted against the government because their conscience told them to do so," Bilawal said. "I also know who voted against the government out of spite for Imran Khan and Hafeez Sheikh."

Personal protective equipment make wearers sick

Personal protective equipment make wearers sick
Personal protective equipment (PPE) required in operating rooms and intensive care units can make wearers sick, a small study confirms.

The findings help explain reports by clinicians of difficulty breathing, headache, and mental impairment while wearing the full protective suit that includes high quality mask, face shield and gloves, researchers said.

Among the eight surgeons who volunteered for the study, PPE impaired breathing, resulting in high blood levels of carbon dioxide and low levels of oxygen.

“Air re-breathed within the PPE mask after two hours was found to contain almost 8% carbon dioxide – 260-fold more than atmospheric levels (0.03%),” said Dr. Wyn Lewis of University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The changes were significantly greater than those seen with standard operating room garments, his team reported on Saturday in the British Journal of Surgery, and can cause fluctuations in brain blood flow, shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, nausea, mental impairment, fatigue, and headache.

Three of the surgeons experienced headaches related to altered blood flow in a major brain artery. “These findings were observed in young, fit, doctors, posing the question of what might emerge in mature professionals with co-existing medical issues, or anyone working beyond this study’s two-hour limit,” Lewis said.
