Sudan Protests Reportedly Spread to More Than a Half-Dozen Cities

A bonfire is lit along a street during protests against price increases in Atbara, Nile River state, Sudan, Dec. 20, 2018.
Protests against price rises and the autocratic three-decade regime of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir spread Saturday in Sudan, amid reports of fresh casualties.

The government closed schools and universities in the capital, Khartoum, to prevent students from joining the widening protests, and the country's spy chief has shut down internet service and social media sites.

Protesters took to the streets of Khartoum and at least a half-dozen other cities, and there were reports of clashes with security forces firing tear gas in a number of them. Reports of arrests circulated on Twitter, but because of the internet outages it was not immediately clear how many people had been detained.

The Reuters news agency said 14 leaders of opposition groups were arrested, including octogenarian politician Farouq Abu Issa, who leads one of two main opposition groups, following a gathering of opponents of al-Bashir in the capital.

Former Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi, who was ousted by Bashir in 1989, told a press conference after the meeting that a "national unity government" should be formed. Al-Mahdi, who recently returned from exile to resume political activity, said the popular rejection of the regime had spread to 28 cities, meaning the Sudanese people were expressing their opposition to a dictatorial regime.

Legal, justified

This peaceful movement, he said, is allowed by the Sudanese constitution and international agreements to which Sudan is a signatory, and it is justified by the collapse of public services and the economic crisis.

Hundreds of protesters in Khartoum chanted slogans Friday against the al- Bashir government, and they included the popular Arab Spring slogan, "The people want to topple the regime." It was the fourth day of protests over rising prices and political oppression.

Sudan's spy chief, Salah Gosh, reportedly met with journalists and other well-known figures Friday to demand they conform to a national loyalty pact. A number of newspapers reportedly decided not to publish Saturday because of the restrictions. Gosh also was reported on social media to have claimed that the Israeli Mossad was involved in sabotage and violence during the four days of protests.

Various social media outlets showed amateur video of security forces firing tear gas at protesters near Khartoum and in its twin city of Omdurman. Other videos showed what appeared to be a government security vehicle ramming into protesters overnight. It was not clear whether anyone was killed or injured.

Reuters reported that demonstrating students set fire to the headquarters of the country's ruling party Saturday in al-Rahad, 370 kilometers northeast of the capital. Amateur video on Twitter also showed a large crowd of mostly young men protesting against the regime in Barbar, in the north of the country.

Coordination suspected

Faisal Hassan Ibrahim, deputy head of the ruling party, asserted that the protests appeared to be "coordinated and organized," and he insisted the security forces were "guarding strategic locations" across the country.

Adam, a 30-year-old computer programmer from Khartoum, told VOA he didn't think people were protesting because of calls by any political party or opposition group. Rather, he said, the protests were spurred by the country's economy.

"The government stopped all the banks," he said. "If people want to buy something, there is no money, there is no fuel, and there is no transportation, [so] the people feel that life has stopped. So they decided to get out and drive out the government."

Al-Mahdi said Saturday that 22 people had been killed in the four days of protests against the government. The BBC Arabic services reported that the toll could be as high as 25. VOA could not independently confirm the casualty figures.

Al-Bashir, who is wanted on an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court for gross human rights violations in Darfur, has ruled Sudan with an iron fist for nearly 30 years. Lawmakers recently amended the constitution to allow him to run for another term in 2020.

More Than 60 Killed as Tsunami Strikes Java, Sumatra Islands

More Than 60 Killed as Tsunami Strikes Java, Sumatra Islands
A tsunami struck beaches along Indonesia's Sunda Straits late Saturday local time, killing at least 62 people and injuring nearly 600, the country's disaster agency said Sunday.

The casualties occurred in three regions -- South Lampung in Sumatra and the Serang and Pandeglang regions of Java, west of the capital Jakarta -- along the Sunda Straits, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNBP), said in a statement.

Hundreds of homes, nine hotels and 10 boats were damaged, BNBP said Sunday.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported an eruption of Krakatoa about 9 p.m. Saturday local time, and the tsunami struck a short time later, about 9:30 p.m.

The number of casualties is expected to rise because officials have not been able to contact all the areas affected by the tsunami, the statement said. A highway connecting Serang and Pandeglang had also been damaged.

Disaster agency head Endan Permana told local media that many people were missing in tourist locale of Tanjung Lesung, Banten province, near Jakarta, and that police were providing assistance, as emergency workers had not yet arrived in the area, according to Reuters news agency.

“The cause of the tsunami was due to a combination of undersea landslides after the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatoa and the tidal wave caused by the full moon," according to BMKG.

On Sept. 28, a quake and tsunami that hit near the city of Palu, on the island of Sulawesi, killed more than 2,500 and displaced about 70,000.

On Dec. 26, 2004, an earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami that killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.

Balochistan Information Minister Mir Zahoor Ahmed Buledi has said that $1 billion has been approved for a social development package in the eighth meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Mr Buledi represented Balochistan with a strong delegation in the JCC meeting held in Beijing on Dec 20.

Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani did not attend the meeting as he had reservations over not including development projects of the province in the CPEC.

On his return from Beijing, Mr Buledi said here on Saturday that the Chinese government would provide 20,000 scholarships to Pakistani students.

He said that the Chinese government would help Pakistan in textile, petro chemical, steel and mining sectors.

Currency business decreases by 70% in two months

Need long-term policy to store much bigger amount of dollars for extended stability in the exchange rate
Business volume in the currency market has fallen by 70 per cent in the last couple of months but the grey market has expanded its operation to large scale, said currency dealers.

The dealers said that laws after laws by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) are making the currency business increasingly cumbersome.

“Investment in dollars and other currencies has disappeared while the business volume has declined by 70pc during the last two months,” Secretary General Exchange Companies Association of Pakistan, Zafar Paracha.

He said that the grey market for illegal currency business has expanded on larger scale; the reduced 70pc volume of legal business has transferred to illegal market.

Currency dealers said that a compliance officer in an exchange company has been mandated to perform his duty like a police officer and report each and every transaction with his judgment about the client.

A number of laws have been framed to identify illegal and doubtful transactions and clients in the wake of pressure on Pakistan to come out from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) grey list.

Pakistan was included in the FATF grey list in June.

The government was given a time frame to come up with the necessary framework to avoid relegating to the ‘black-list’ of countries.

The laws aiming to check money laundering have resulted in higher remittances through banking channels.

Remittances through banks have increased by 12.5pc in the first five months of the current fiscal year.

SECP and SBP’s strict directions to scrutinise transactions under the “Know Your Customer” requires all banks to ascertain the identity of their customers in detail.

Rupee is currently trading at Rs139 against the dollar in the inter-bank market down from Rs108 in January and Rs123 in August earlier this year.

UAE’s announcement to deposit $3 billion in the SBP account has supported the local currency. Rupee saw slight appreciation on Saturday.

“The UAE’s $3bn support and hope for more from China has had a short-term impact on exchange rate stability.

We need long-term policy to store much bigger amount of dollars for extended stability in the exchange rate,” said Malik Bostan, President Forex Association of Pakistan.

Commenting on the decline in currency trading volumes, Bostan said that “currency trading fell as nobody is sure about the future of local currency since the market is filled with speculations about further devaluation of rupee to Rs 145 or more.

This will end up once we succeed to devise long-term plan for foreign exchange reserves.”

Foreign exchange reserves of the country have been falling for several months on account of debt servicing and fill the widening current account deficit which has dropped by 10pc in last five months.

Pakistan Supports Afghan-led Plan To Bring Lasting Peace, says COAS

Pakistan Supports Afghan-led Plan To Bring Lasting Peace, says COAS
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa said on Saturday that Pakistan supports Afghan-led peace plan to help bring lasting peace in the neighboring state, informed ISPR.

The army chief speaking at the passing out Parade of 110th Midshipmen and 19th Short Service Course held at Naval Academy, Karachi, said: “the new government has extended a hand of peace and friendship towards India with utmost sincerity but it should not be taken as our weakness, peace benefits everybody. It is time to fight against hunger, disease and illiteracy, then to fight against each other.”
COAS Bajwa said that wars bring death, destruction and misery for the people. Ultimately, all issues are resolved on the table through negotiations.

He said that the relative peace present in the country today has been achieved after tremendous sacrifices to restore peace and order.

“It is now our duty to honour their sacrifice through display of Unity, Faith and Discipline in everything that we do. Let us all start the transition from conflict to progress, through commitment to the ideals of Allama Iqbal and Quaid-e-Azam. This is the minimum that we can do for our beautiful country,” he said.
The army chief said that the country’s young cadets should take the country along the lines of developmental perspective than a security perspective.

“Survival in the difficult times has given us the confidence that we have the will and capacity to endure. Nobody can threaten us or our freedom. It is time we fulfill our dreams and make Pakistan a great country,” he noted.

COAS Bajwa reminded the cadets that the country is yet to get out from terrorism and an unannounced war.
Like the terrorists before; the protagonists of the new threats are at times, our own people. Mostly misguided by ambitions, blinded by hate, ethnicity or religion or simply overawed by social media onslaught, some of our own boys and girls readily fall victim to such dangerous or hostile narratives,” he added.

“The response to such onslaughts or threats cannot always be kinetic in nature. You will have to deal with them in cognitive domain by producing or propagating a superior narrative, but this can only happen if you have developed the ability to handle unwarranted criticism with patience and possess better intellectual skills to respond to such threats with logic and reasoning.”

The prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Gold Medal was conferred upon Lieutenant Haris Ali Khan PN. Midshipman Tauqeer Hussain was awarded the coveted Sword of Honour for his overall best performance, whereas Midshipman Haroon Khan won the Academy’s Dirk.

Govt to make an example of corrupt elements present in PTI, Chohan

Govt to make an example of corrupt elements present in PTI, Chohan
Punjab Information Minister Fayaz-ul-Hasan Chohan said on Saturday that the government will make an example of the corrupt element present in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

The provincial minister said in a public gathering that the Punjab government will present its 100 days performance before Prime Minister Imran Khan with honour. "The previous government's honeymoon period lasted over 100-day period."

Chohan said that the truth he speaks annoys cheaters and looters, who have named themselves, '18th and 19th amendments'.

He said that the politicians who were calling for accountability against each other have got united because they know they will soon be jailed for there financial malpractices.

"Nawaz told Shehbaz at the parliament's corridor to be not be played by Zardari," he claimed.

It appears that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader has a penchant for issuing high-handed remarks, which eventually creates controversy for the party and the government.

The minister, earlier, was forced to tender an apology for his derogatory statements on female artistes and news channels.

The minister, at the event in Lahore, had said that "if I had the authority, I would have made Nargis offer Hajj and Megha keep as much as 300 fasts a year."

"While speaking with regard to that a word slipped my tongue about Nargis sahiba and a TV channel hyped it too much," Chohan said in his video statement."I apologise to Nargis sahiba from the core of my heart. She is a very respectable person, a star of Pakistan film industry and a [cultural] ambassador of Pakistan."

Nargis had earlier slammed the minister for his derogatory, misogynistic remarks about the female artistes.

"Whoever this minister is, I have listened to his statement and I would only like to tell him that you are on a responsible post. Choose your words rightly,” she said. "Minister sahib, every individual has respect; be careful next time or else every respectable person reserves the right to take a legal action."

Later in his message, Chohan also apologised for his comments about certain news channels, a clip of which was widely shared on social networking platforms.

"I also apologise to owners and employees of Kohenoor and Royal news channels," he said. "God willing, next time caution would be exercised with regard to all these things."

The minister had abused a private TV channel’s technical staff in reaction to being asked by a talk show host about his controversial remarks in the past.

Imam, Haris lead Pakistan to victory in Tour warm-up

Imam-ul-Haq and Haris Sohail hit half-centuries as the touring Pakistanis beat the South African Invitation XI by six wickets at Willowmoore Park on Friday.

Set to make 195 in approximately 50 overs, the tourists cruised home in 40.2 overs to complete a satisfactory workout in their only warm-up match ahead of the first Test starting at Centurion on Wednesday.

Earlier left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Amir, recalled to the Test squad, took three for 35 before the Invitation team declared their second innings on 182 for seven.

Most of Pakistan's likely Test top order batsmen spent a reasonable amount of time at the crease over the course of their two innings.

First innings centurions Azhar Ali and Babar Azam did not bat in the second innings.

Left-handers Imam and Haris batted fluently in a third wicket partnership of 96 in 21.5 overs to set up the win. Imam made 66 off 93 balls, while Haris was unbeaten on 73 off 87 deliveries.

Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas, an injury doubt for the first Test, did not bowl in the match but leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who only joined the tour on Thursday following the birth of his child, sent down 11 overs and took one for 45 in the second innings.

The South African selectors, meanwhile, have added fast bowler Dane Paterson to their squad for the first Test with Vernon Philander ruled out because of a broken finger.

Khawaja Brother's physical remand extended by 15 days

Khawaja Brothers to appear before court in Paragon Housing Society scam
An accountability court on Saturday extended by 15 days the physical remand of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khawaja Saad Rafique and his brother, Salman Rafique, in connection to the Paragon Housing Society scam.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials presented the PML-N leader and his brother before the court and sought a 15-day extension in their physical remand. Saad was brought to Lahore from Islamabad where he was on transit remand since December 20 to attend the NA session.

On December 11, NAB arrested the Rafique brothers after the Lahore High Court (LHC) rejected their request for an extension in their pre-arrest bail in the case pertaining to the housing society scam.

Heavy contingents of police had been deployed and roads leading to the court had been blocked for the hearing.

Saad and Salman will now be presented before court on January 5.

UNSC adopts 1st resolution for establishing peace in Yemen

The United Nations Security Council has ratified its first resolution
The United Nations Security Council has ratified its first resolution named 2451 to support Stockholm agreement and establishing truce in important Yemeni ports.

The resolution was proposed on Monday, and the UK distributed its draft on Wednesday.

Russia, China and Kuwait were against some articles of the resolution like those related to Saudi Arabia pressures against Iran and sending missiles to Yemeni Ansarullah.

Meanwhile, the US has also presented a draft which mostly focused on humanitarian issues and controlling transit in ports and has omitted the article related to war crimes.

The reason behind US concerns was that, due to UN secretary general reports on the heinous killing of Yemeni citizens in the Saudi coalition air strikes, the coalition and the Saudi authorities who were their commanders were subject to war crimes.

The resolution mainly focuses on sending essential products to Yemenis, supporting Stockholm agreement, assignment the Secretary-General of the United Nations to implement it and observing the ceasefire.

The 4th round of the UN-brokered Yemeni peace talks started on December 6 in Stockholm.

Representatives of the Yemeni National Salvation Government and the deposed Yemeni government reached an agreement on truce in Al Hudaydah port and city, As-Salif and Ayn Issa ports.

The intra-Yemeni talks which were earlier scheduled to be held on September 6 was postponed due to Saudis' sabotage.

The first round of the Yemeni peace talks was held in December 2015 in Geneva but the meeting produced no results.

Saudi Arabia and a number of its regional allies launched a devastating military campaign against Yemen in March 2015, with the aim of bringing the government of Mansour Hadi back to power and crushing the country’s Ansarullah Movement.

Some 16,000 Yemenis have been killed and thousands more injured since the onset of the Saudi-led aggression.

The assaults of the Saudi-led coalition forces have failed to stop the Yemenis from resisting the aggression.

Fear for his children in India, head of a hardliner group booked his tickets to Karachi: Naseeruddin Shah

“If Naseeruddin Shah is scared in India, he should not delay in leaving for Pakistan.

I have booked a ticket for him for August 14, the Pakistan Independence Day, so that India has one less traitor.”” Amit Jani, President of the group named Navnirman Sena, told The Times of India.

Amit Jani, who heads Indian state Uttar Pradesh’s Navnirman Sena, spoke to the Indian news outlet after the ‘Mirza Ghalib’ actor commented on a number of issues facing India.

Referring to the recent violence sparked by the discovery of a cow’s death, in which a police officer was killed by a mob, Shah had said that India has already witnessed that the death of a cow has more significance than that of a police officer.

A police officer Subodh Kumar Singh was attacked by a mob when he and his team had gone to a village to defuse tension after cow carcasses were found in a forest.

The protests escalated after activists of right-wing group Bajrang Dal came to the area and blocked a road with a truck carrying the dead cows.

Last year, a Reuters investigation also showed that cow vigilantism flourished during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, run by his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Khawaja Brothers to appear before court in Paragon Housing Society scam

Khawaja Brothers to appear before court in Paragon Housing Society scam
Khawaja Brothers to appear before accountability court in Paragon Housing Society scam today, December 22.

Earlier on December 12, accountability court granted physical remand of former railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and his brother former Punjab health minister Khawaja Salman Rafique until Dec 22 in a case related to the Paragon Housing Society scam.

According to details, NAB officials brought both the brothers to the court amid tight security today. Special security arrangements were made with a strong contingent of security personnel deployed at the court to avoid any incident.

The NAB prosecutor requested the AC to grant their physical remand for 15 days as their custody was required for further investigation into the case.

The judge, however, remanded the PML-N leaders in NAB custody for ten days and directed the Bureau to provide all basic facilities to them.

Saad Rafique complained to the judge that medicines are not being provided to him properly as he is unwell. He added whether one is guilty or not will be determined later but they should not be meted out inhuman treatment at least for now.At this, the judge directed the prosecutor to submit a written assurance that the suspects will be provided with all facilities.

The Khawaja brothers’ lawyer contended that his clients had nothing to do with the Paragon society as no connection between them and the housing project had been established over 15 years.

Earlier on December 11, officials from National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested Khawaja Saad Rafique and his brother Khawaja Salman Rafique after Lahore High Court rejected their bail plea.

The LHC had earlier granted the brothers pre-arrest bail and they had appeared before NAB multiple times for questioning in connection to the case.

NAB had launched an investigation into the alleged scam after dozens of victims staged protests and held a press conference at the Lahore Press Club against the housing society’s fraud.

The bureau had arrested former LDA director general Ahad Khan Cheema and others over allegations of corruption in Ashiana Iqbal Housing Society scam.During investigations, it was revealed that Cheema had misused his authority and received huge sums of money in return for awarding the contract of the project to Casa Developers.

The amount was paid from the account of the Paragon Housing Society.

Further, the two-judge bench also heard Rafique brothers’ petition to transfer their case from NAB DG Lahore Saleem Shahzad.Last month, the PML-N leader had requested NAB chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal to transfer their case to another bureau as Shahzad was “no longer an independent person” and could not be trusted to conduct a transparent inquiry.

Outrage as Denmark passes law making HANDSHAKE mandatory for naturalization

Outrage as Denmark passes law making HANDSHAKE mandatory for naturalization
Danish lawmakers have approved a government-backed proposal to make citizenship applicants shake hands with the official conducting the naturalization ceremony. The bill has been criticized for discriminating against Muslims.

The new citizenship bill has been the subject of a heated debate since last summer. It requires those applying for Danish citizenship to commit to the country’s values and to show respect for its government by shaking hands with its representative.

Critics of the bill argue that it’s aimed at discouraging Muslims from seeking Danish citizenship, calling the proposal discriminatory and describing it as an unnecessary formality.

The proposal was backed by Denmark’s three-party minority government, with the driving force behind the legislation being the Conservative Party and anti-immigrant Danish People’s Party.

The changes to the naturalization ceremony, which come into effect on January 1, have been met with strong opposition from the local officials who conduct such proceedings. Some mayors have already said they will ignore the new guidelines. The mayor of the town of Kerteminde in central Denmark has gone so far as to imply that he would rather not show up at work than coerce an applicant to shake his hand.

“Shaking hands does not show if you are integrated or not. I think I will probably find an excuse and the deputy mayor will come to work that day,” Kasper Ejsing Olesen told the Guardian earlier.

The red tape associated with the festive ceremony will cost taxpayers an additional 2,400 kroner ($370) – double the current fee of 1,200 kroner ($183). However, the proponents of the new guidelines believe it’s a fair price to pay to become a Dane.

“When you consider that you are receiving the gift of Danish citizenship, I actually don’t think it’s that expensive. I think it is a tremendously large and valuable gift,” People’s Party spokesman Christian Langball told a local broadcaster in September, as cited by the Local.

Denmark’s Integration Minister Inger Stojberg, a member of the center-right Venstre party, brushed off the criticism, insisting that a handshake is “a completely natural part of the ceremony.”

Stojberg said that a spokesman for Hizb ut-Tahrir, an Islamic group that openly supports the establishment of a caliphate, told her that he would not have become a Danish citizen if the rules applied retroactively.

“I asked him if he would advise his followers in Hizb ut-Tahrir to pass on it, and he said he would. And that’s exactly what we want with the naturalization ceremony,” the minister said, as cited by TV2.

The latest measure is another step in the Danish government’s wide-ranging crackdown on migration. Earlier this month, Stojberg proposed sending rejected asylum seekers to a remote island, about two miles from the mainland. Some 100 failed asylum seekers and criminal migrants are going to be brought to the islet in the Baltic Sea on a ferry under the plan.

In August, hundreds hit the streets to protest against a “burqa ban” – another “discriminatory” measure that came into effect that month.

Denmark has also been enforcing a controversial law allowing authorities to confiscate cash and valuables from refugees to fund their stay in Denmark since 2016.

Jazz guitarist Musa Manzini plays through brain surgery

Musa Manzini plucked away as surgeons removed his brain tumour
A South African jazz musician who played his guitar during brain surgery is making a successful recovery.

Musa Manzini was kept awake during the six-hour operation partly to preserve and restore his finger movements.

That decision was made "taking into consideration my career as a musician", the multi-instrumentalist and university lecturer said.

The procedure took place at the Chief Albert Luthuli hospital in the coastal city of Durban.

Wide awake
A video of Manzini's procedure shows him gently plucking the instrument on top of the operating table as medical staff tend to him.

The operation was performed last week by a team of specialist neurosurgeons led by Dr Basil Enicker and Dr Rohen Harrichandparsad.

Manzini said the recurring tumour on his brain is linked to a neurological condition he has had since 2006.

Dr Enicker told the IOL news site that in this instance an "awake" operation was preferable to the use of general anaesthetic.

"In this way, we can test regions of the brain before [the tumour is] removed. This allows for increased removal of the tumour, while minimising damage to the brain," he said.

Doctors wanted to minimise the risk of paralysis or loss of functions in the brain's motor cortex, which controls voluntary movement.

Musa Manzini said he is grateful for his treatment, adding: "I don't think we appreciate our public health institutions enough".

The award-winning musician said he was keen to take to the stage again once fully recovered.

Israeli forces shoot dead Palestinian teen, wound dozens more in Gaza Strip

Israeli forces shoot dead Palestinian teen, wound dozens more in Gaza Strip
A Palestinian teen has been shot dead by Israeli fire and forty others have sustained injuries during anti-occupation protests along the border between the besieged Gaza Strip and Israeli-occupied territories.

Gaza's Health Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qodra said 16-year-old Mohammed al-Jahjuh was fatally shot in the neck, while 40 others, including a local journalist, were wounded by Israeli gunfire during border protests and clashes east of Gaza City on Friday

Al-Jahjuh was "hit in the neck by a bullet (fired) by Israeli soldiers", the spokesman said.

The Israeli army said around 8,000 Palestinians had gathered along the fence separating Gaza from the occupied territories.

The Palestinian protesters threw rocks from behind clouds of black smoke of burning tires at Israeli troops, who responded with tear gas and live fire.

Tensions have been running high near the fence since March 30, which marked the start of a series of protests dubbed “The Great March of Return.” Palestinian protesters demand the right to return for those driven out of their homeland.

The clashes in Gaza reached their peak on May 14, the eve of the 70th anniversary of Nakba Day, or the Day of Catastrophe, which coincided this year with Washington's relocation of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.

More than 220 Palestinians have so far been killed and over 20,000 others wounded in the renewed Gaza clashes, according to the latest figures released by the Gaza Health Ministry.

Gaza has been under Israeli siege since June 2007, causing a decline in living standards as well as unprecedented unemployment and poverty.

Israel has also launched several wars on the Palestinian sliver, the last of which began in early July 2014 and ended in late August the same year. The Israeli military aggression killed nearly 2,200 Palestinians and injured over 11,100 others.

Tensions have also been running high in the occupied West Bank as the Israeli military regularly opens fatal fire on Palestinians, accusing them of seeking to attack its personnel.

Human rights groups have repeatedly slammed the Tel Aviv regime for its shoot-to-kill policy as a large number of the Palestinians killed at the scene of attacks did not pose any serious threat to Israelis.

Israeli troops have on numerous occasions been caught on camera brutally killing Palestinians, with the videos going viral online and sparking condemnations of the regime’s military.

Since the beginning of 2018, Israeli forces have killed at least 310 Palestinians, including 54 children, and arrested over 900 others, according to a Palestinian human rights center.

Two Scandinavian backpackers hacked to death in Morocco, mother spammed with gruesome images

Two Scandinavian backpackers hacked to death in Morocco, mother spammed with gruesome images
Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, 24, from Denmark, and Maren Ueland, 28, from Norway were both stabbed to death and one was beheaded on camera. Footage of the appalling attack has been posted to one of their mother’s Facebook.

Friends and family have urged people not to view the video which has been shared across social media. The women’s bodies were discovered by a group of French hikers on Monday and flown to Copenhagen Friday.

“It was horrible. They were broken,” one of the French hikers said. “We warned everyone we saw in Imlil not to go up there. I did not want more to see what we had seen...It was a big shock, we’re thinking about it all day. It makes you think about what’s important in life.”

Ueland's mother's Facebook page has been spammed with hundreds of images depicting her daughter's slit throat and Jespersen's severed head.

However, the vast majority of comments expressed condolences, many of which are from people claiming to be Moroccans and decrying the attacks.

Video of the suspects pledging allegiance to Daesh head Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi has been authenticated by investigators, adding further evidence that this was indeed an act of terrorism.

So far, Moroccan police have arrested four suspects in connection with the case.

Three of them were arrested as they were boarding a bus from Marrakech to Agadir and were found with three long machete-like knives, a shorter blade and a slingshot. Surveillance footage shows the suspects setting up a tent a few hundred yards from the women. Morocco's general prosecutor said one of the suspects is a member of a militant group but declined to give any name.

Ueland's mother told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that before setting off on the month-long holiday, her daughter’s “first priority was safety. The girls had taken all the precautionary measures before embarking on this trip.”

Jespersen’s ex-boyfriend made a heartfelt plea for calm and peace as the women’s family and friends continue to grieve.

“It breaks my heart that there is someone who would hurt you, you always saw the very best in people and you brought out the best in the people around you. You travelled around the world just as you would, you would not be limited by fear of all the dangers of the world. You did what you wanted and you were tough,” ex-boyfriend Glen Martin wrote.

In a statement on the killings, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said he was filled with “anger and disgust” at “these barbaric and bestial actions,” adding that “Much indicates that the killing can be politically motivated and thus a terrorist act.”

“It shows that there are still dark forces, their violence will fight us and the way we live. It makes me angry but also stubborn that we can never give in and give up.”

Putin Welcomes U.S. Withdrawal From Syria as ‘Correct’

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia
President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia on Thursday hailed the decision by President Trump to withdraw United States forces from Syria, calling it “correct” because the American troops were not needed.

Mr. Putin’s praise came a day after Mr. Trump said he was ordering the withdrawal because the United States military had achieved its goal of defeating the Islamic State militant group in Syria. Given the unfinished business on the ground in Syria, however, the move was a surprise to many, including some senior presidential military and diplomatic advisers in Washington.

The decision has been criticized, even among Republicans, as abandoning Kurdish allies in the face of a hostile Turkey and a still dangerous Islamic State, as well as leaving Syria open territory for the geopolitical ambitions of Russia and Iran.

Mr. Putin’s response came during his annual news conference, a marathon, four-hour affair during which he suggested several times that Mr. Trump was being thwarted by those who did not accept his victory as president.

He suggested that his problems in arranging a second meeting with Mr. Trump after their July summit in Helsinki stemmed from domestic American opposition, and he predicted the interference was only going to get worse.

“Now, the majority in Congress will change and one can project with 100 percent certainty that there will be new attacks launched against the incumbent president, and whether he will be able to launch a direct dialogue with Russia, I don’t know,” Mr. Putin said.

Mr. Putin said he broadly agreed that the Islamic State, sometimes known by the acronyms ISIL or ISIS, had been defeated in Syria, although analysts estimate it still commands a force of 15,000 fighters. “With regards to the victory over ISIL, on the whole I agree with the president of the United States.”

The Russian leader expressed skepticism, however, that the United States would follow through on Mr. Trump’s pronouncement, noting that the government had similarly pledged to pull out of Afghanistan by 2014 but still stations forces there.

“We don’t see any signs yet of the withdrawal of U.S. troops,” he said. “How long has the United States been in Afghanistan? Seventeen years? And almost every year they say they’re pulling out their troops.”

Mr. Putin reiterated the Kremlin position that American forces have no legal right to be in Syria, in that they were neither invited by Damascus, as the Russian forces were, nor authorized by the United Nations Security Council.

The American decision to withdraw represented at least a tactical victory for Mr. Putin, who intervened in Syria in September 2015 with the primary goal of re-establishing Russia as a power to be reckoned with in the Middle East, analysts said.

“For now, it is really good news for Putin,” said Konstantin von Eggert, a political commentator on the independent Russian TV station Dozhd. “Putin’s main goal from Day 1 of his intervention was to establish himself as the global authority to prevent regime change. In this he has succeeded.”

But Mr. Putin still faces some challenges in Syria. The Islamic State, while mostly lying low, remains a potentially potent guerrilla force in the eastern desert region, he and others noted. With the Americans out of the way, he will inherit that fight, which he largely avoided while propping up Mr. Assad’s control over most of western Syria.

“ISIS is not defeated. I am sure the Russians know that very well,” said Yuri Barmin, a fellow at the Russian International Affairs Council who specializes in Middle Eastern affairs. “If the Americans are not there to fight it, then who will? It will have to be Russia.”

The American presence also helped to glue together a Kurdish-Arab alliance in the east that is likely to unravel in its absence, he said.

The withdrawal could present problems in the western theater in the Syrian conflict as well. Not only will it remove the hurdle preventing Iranian forces from advancing unimpeded down the road from Iraq into Syria, but it could also fuel ambitions within the Syrian and Iranian forces to capture Idlib province, the last holdout of the armed opposition.

That in turn could cause problems with Turkey, which has supported the opposition and is no friend to Russia’s client, President Assad.

Any surge in fighting would also puncture the calm that Russia has sought to establish in order to push the troubled political process forward and get others on board with talks about money for reconstruction, Mr. Barmin noted.

For now, however, Mr. Putin savored the moment, using the news conference to hit on a favorite theme: that Russia is a pocket of stability compared with the disintegrating West. He said the Anglo-Saxon world was undergoing “tectonic shifts” with both the election of Mr. Trump and the vote by Britons to leave the European Union, or Brexit.

“Trump has won, which is an obvious fact, but not everyone is willing to accept this victory,” Mr. Putin said. “They have been doing their utmost to delegitimize their president.”

Britain faced similar problems with the Brexit referendum, he said. “No one recognizes the results, and the democratic procedures have been unraveling,” he said.

Russia has been accused of manipulating both the 2016 American election and the Brexit referendum through social media and, possibly, through illicit campaign cash, but Mr. Putin made the statements without any apparent irony, nor did he refer to the accusations.

Russia Probe May be Headed for Climax in 2019

Former U.S. national security adviser Michael Flynn passes by members of the media as he departs after his sentencing was delayed at U.S. District Court in Washington, U.S., Dec. 18, 2018.
As 2018 draws to a close, the Russia investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller appears to be gaining momentum, built on an assortment of guilty pleas and convictions of former associates of President Donald Trump over the past year.

Some analysts predict the probe could headed for an epic climax in 2019 that could have a huge impact on the next presidential race in 2020.

In recent weeks, former key Trump associates have paraded in and out of court including former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and former Trump attorney Michael Cohen.

Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison on charges that include campaign finance violations related to hush money payments made to two women who allegedly had extramarital affairs with Donald Trump before he became president.

Trump has previously denied the affairs and has also denied Cohen’s allegation that Trump directed him to make the payments to the two women.

Flynn case

Flynn appeared in court this past week expecting to be sentenced for lying to federal investigators last year. Flynn admitted lying to the FBI about his contacts with the then-Russian ambassador during the presidential transition.

Flynn and his attorneys were hoping for no jail time. But Federal Judge Emmet Sullivan unexpectedly lashed out at the retired Army general.

“Arguably you sold your country out,” the judge said. Flynn’s sentencing was put off to see if he can offer additional cooperation to the special counsel’s investigation.

So far, 33 individuals have faced charges in connection with the Russia probe, including 26 Russian nationals alleged to be behind election-related cyberattacks in 2016.

Even as the Russia probe appears to be gaining steam, the president remains adamant that no evidence has surfaced of collusion between his 2016 campaign and Russia.

“On the Mueller situation, we are very happy with what we are reading because there was no collusion whatsoever,” Trump told reporters recently outside the White House. “There never has been. The last thing I want is help from Russia on a campaign.”

Defending Mueller

Opposition Democrats remain poised to defend the Mueller investigation as they prepare to assume the majority in the House of Representatives next month.

“They should not be able to end it. They should not be able to limit it,” said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer. “They should not be able to interfere with Mueller going forward and doing what he thinks is the right thing.”

Though Republicans lost their House majority in the November midterm elections, they added two seats to their majority in the Senate and will hold a 53-to-47 seat edge in January.

Cohen’s role

Cohen’s case was handled by federal prosecutors in New York and the campaign finance violations have put the Trump White House on the defensive and made Cohen a key player in the investigation.

“What has happened since Michael Cohen has been cooperating with Robert Mueller is a lot more information related to the campaign,” said University of Connecticut legal expert Doug Spencer. “The first things that we learned about were campaign finance violations, potentially, with payments from President Trump’s campaign to women who were alleging affairs with him.”

The flurry of court activity in the weeks since the midterm election suggests the Mueller probe may be building toward a climax, says Third Way analyst Jim Kessler.

“So we are now getting the ‘big fish,’ people like (Michael) Flynn, people like Roger Stone, Michael Cohen, the president’s personal lawyer, who have either turned on the president or are on the ‘hot seat’ (in a vulnerable spot),” Kessler told VOA. “So the next 60 days should be very, very interesting, but it does not look like good news for the president.”

Wrap it up

Trump’s Republican supporters are urging the probe wind up quickly, including Senator Lindsey Graham.

“Eventually, Mr. Mueller is going to have to show the public that there is collusion or there is not, and we will see what Mr. Mueller finds,” said Graham, who supports letting Mueller finish the investigation.

The Russia probe may be headed for a legal conclusion in 2019, but it may be up to Congress to deal with the political aftermath, possibly including the option of impeachment.

“There are a lot of legal issues that I can speak to, but the real ultimate question here is a political one,” said legal analyst Ric Simmons of Ohio State University. “And depending on what is in this report, what is the political fallout both with the American people and with Democrats, but especially with Republicans in Congress.”

In an interview with Reuters this month, Trump said he was not concerned with the prospect of being impeached in connection with the Russia investigation. “I think that the people would revolt if that happened.”

Recent polls show a majority of Americans favor Mueller being allowed to finish his investigation. But Trump’s repeated attacks on the probe as a “hoax” and a “witch hunt” have slightly eroded the extent of public support over time.

Whatever comes out of the Russia probe could have a major political impact in 2019 as both President Trump and a large group of potential Democratic contenders look ahead to the 2020 election.

‘We’ll crush them!’ Greece threatens NATO ally Turkey over Aegean islets

Greek infantrymen parade in Athens
Greece’s top military brass have fired off a set of unusually stern warnings to Turkey, threatening to crush its troops if they dare to land on any disputed islet in the Aegean Sea – but Ankara didn’t mince its words either.

Reacting to violations of Greek airspace by Turkish jets over the Aegean, Defense Minister Panos Kammenos warned that Ankara would pay a price. “If they make the slightest move, we will crush them,” Kammenos threatened. Athens wants peace and harmony, he said, but it won’t “concede a single centimeter” of its land.

The minister was visiting a military outpost on the small Aegean island of Leros, so the bellicose rhetoric could be explained by his desire to raise the troops’ morale. But it was also echoed by Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis, chief of the Hellenic General Staff.

“If the Turks land on a rocky islet, we will raze it to the ground. That is a red line that is espoused by the government,” Apostolakis declared. He suggested that a military confrontation with Turkey is a possibility, but said “along with the US and the European Union, we want to ensure that the Turks do not reach that point.”

It comes after Greece’s military said that a pair of Turkish F-16s made a flyover of the island of Kastelorizo in the eastern Aegean on Thursday, minutes after a helicopter carrying Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos traveled through the area en route to Athens.

Turkey, however, will not allow “any fait accompli in the Aegean and the Mediterranean,” according to Gen. Hulusi Akar, chief of its General Staff. There is no way that Turkey will back down “from the rights of our country and our people,” he said.

Despite formally being NATO allies, Greece and Turkey share an uneasy history. The modern-day Turkish Republic was founded after a bloody war with Greece and Western powers back in 1923.

Hostility between Athens and Ankara persisted throughout several decades, reaching its peak during the Cyprus Crisis, which almost erupted into full-scale war after Turkish troops invaded the north of the island in 1974.

Currently, Greece and Turkey have several disputes over the Aegean. The sea is dotted with dozens of small islets, making delimitation of the maritime border especially challenging. Several clashes between both countries’ warships have taken place over the last few years, along with numerous mid-air encounters of Turkish and Greek jets.

At times, both countries have tried to come to an agreement over the issue, but to no avail so far.
