End of Merkel era begins as German CDU picks new party leader

End of Merkel era begins as German CDU picks new party leader
Germany’s Christian Democrats elect a new chairman on Saturday, aiming to unite their conservative party behind a new leader who they hope can succeed Angela Merkel as chancellor when she steps down after federal elections in September.

At stake is the leadership of Europe’s biggest economy in the era after Merkel, who has vowed not to run again after becoming Europe’s predominant leader since taking office in 2005 and proving a winner with German voters.

The new CDU leader will be elected by 1,001 delegates at a digital congress. By tradition, the leader is usually - though not always - the chancellor candidate for the CDU’s “Union” with its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU).

Centrist Armin Laschet, arch-conservative Friedrich Merz and foreign policy expert Norbert Roettgen are vying for the CDU leadership.
However, polls show Markus Soeder, the CSU leader, is voters’ choice conservative. Some CDU lawmakers want dynamic Health Minister Jens Spahn to run for chancellor, though he has backed Laschet for the party leadership.

The three declared CDU candidates all contrast with Merkel.

Roettgen, 55, the eloquent chairman of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, wants Germany to take a firmer stance with Russia and China. Merz, 65, has targeted European Central Bank policy and is less diplomatic. Laschet, 59, who has polished his international profile, complains Berlin has taken “too long to react” to French calls for European Union reform.
Roettgen has suggested that, if elected CDU leader, he could support Soeder, Bavaria’s premier, to run as chancellor candidate for their alliance.

Soeder, 54, has shifted from the right towards the moderate centre of late. He plays coy about his ambitions - “My place is in Bavaria” has been his repeated refrain.

Carsten Nickel at Teneo, a political risk consultancy, said Soeder’s deft move towards the centre ground could make him the ideal candidate to lead a coalition with the ecologist Greens.

Russia says leaving Open Skies military treaty

Russia says leaving Open Skies military treaty
Russia’s foreign ministry said Friday it is withdrawing from the Open Skies treaty, undermining the post-Cold War defence accord that allows its signatories to carry out unarmed surveillance flights over each other’s territories.

Citing “lack of progress” on maintaining the functioning of the treaty after the United States withdrew from it last year, the ministry said in a statement it was beginning “domestic procedures for Russia’s withdrawal from the Open Skies treaty.”

The treaty was signed soon after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1992 and came into force in 2002.

It allowed its nearly three dozen signatories to carry out short-notice flights over one another’s territory to monitor potential military operations.

Members include countries across Europe, the former Soviet Union and Canada.

Last year Washington announced it would be leaving the treaty after accusing Russia of violations, including blocking flights over certain sites and forbidding surveys of military exercises.

The Russian foreign ministry said Friday that the United States had used a “fictitious pretext” for its withdrawal and had disturbed “the balance of interests of the participating states”.

The ministry said Russia had put forward proposals to retain the “viability” of the treaty but did not receive support from Washington.

The pact allows its members to request copies of images taken during surveillance flights carried out by other members.

The country under surveillance is given 72-hours warning ahead of a flight and 24-hours notice of the flight path, to which it can suggest modifications.

‘Unfortunate scenario’

Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the Russian parliament’s upper house, said Moscow’s decision to leave Open Skies was “predictable” as the other member states did not fulfil its terms.

In a post on Facebook Friday, the lawmaker said Russia requested the remaining signatories to confirm that they would not transfer information obtained under the Open Skies agreement to Washington.

The United States, like many Open Skies treaty members, is part of the NATO alliance.

“The blame for what is happening — and this is a very unfortunate scenario — is entirely on the United States and NATO allies,” Kosachev wrote.

While Moscow and Washington have frequently accused each other of violations, NATO argued for the preservation of the accord.

NATO deputy spokesperson Piers Cazalet said Russia’s “selective implementation” of its Open Skies duties had for a while undermined the treaty’s contributions to regional security.

“All NATO Allies remain committed to effective international arms control, disarmament, and non-proliferation –- which are essential for our security,” Cazalet said in a statement.

The Open Skies treaty is one of three major treaties Washington abandoned under the adminstration of outgoing President Donald Trump.

In 2018, the United States withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran deal, which curbed Tehran’s nuclear programme in return for an easing of international sanctions.

Iran suspended several of its own commitments under the 2015 deal in retaliation.

Washington also pulled out from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with Russia, further straining already tense relations between Moscow and Washington that in recent years have reached their lowest point since the end of the Cold War.

With President-elect Joe Biden due to step into office next week, one of the first challenges he will face in bilateral relations with Russia is negotiations over the extension of the New START treaty.

The accord, which is Washington’s last remaining arms reduction pact with Moscow, is set to expire on February 5.

US rioters sought to 'capture and assassinate' lawmakers at Capitol: prosecutors

US Capitol Building in Washington
US prosecutors now believe supporters of President Donald Trump planned to “capture and assassinate elected officials” in their siege of the Capitol building last week, according to a new court filing.

The filing, submitted by Justice Department lawyers late Thursday, sought the detention of Jacob Chansley of Arizona, the QAnon conspiracy theorist pictured in the riot dressed as a horned shaman at the desk of Vice President Mike Pence.

“Strong evidence, including Chansley's own words and actions at the Capitol, supports that the intent of the Capitol rioters was to capture and assassinate elected officials in the United States government,” prosecutors said of the Jan 6 siege.

They said Chansley, 33, left a note for Pence at the dais in the Senate Chamber where the second-in-command had been standing just minutes before, which read: “it's only a matter of time, justice is coming.”

The filing gives further insight into the probe by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the day of chaos at the centre of American democracy, which left elected officials holed up fearing for their lives and at least five people dead, including one police officer.

It comes as authorities lay charges against individuals involved in the riot, including a man who flew the confederate flag inside the building, a man who wore a “Camp Auschwitz” sweatshirt and a US Olympic swimming gold medalist.

Chansley is due to appear in court on Friday.

Prosecutors said he is a regular drug user and likely has mental health problems.

“Chansley has spoken openly about his belief that he is an alien, a higher being, and he is here on Earth to ascend to another reality,” the filing read.

Prosecutors requested he be detained as he “poses serious risks of flight and danger to the community.”

Chansley subscribes to QAnon, the far-right conspiracy theory blamed for fuelling a section of Trump's supporters at the Capitol building.

Social media platforms have started cracking down on its followers, who believe Trump is waging a secret war on a liberal cult of Satan-worshipping paedophiles.

In a bipartisan vote, Trump was impeached Wednesday for “incitement of insurrection” by egging on a huge crowd of his supporters to march on Congress.

The centre of Washington was in lockdown early Friday as more than 20,000 armed National Guard troops were mobilised after officials warned of the threat of more violence at the presidential inauguration of Joe Biden on Jan 20, as well as in state capitals.

Coronavirus vaccine trial in Pakistan to end this week

Coronavirus vaccine trial in Pakistan to end this week
The phase III clinical trials for a Chinese coronavirus vaccine candidate at the Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad will end this week.

The lead physician of the clinical trial, Dr Ejaz A Khan said that the Ad5-nCoV vaccine is developed by CanSino Biologics and a research unit backed by the Chinese military.

“The trials began in September last year with a target of 17,500 volunteers.”

The physician, who is also the chairman of infection control at the hospital, said the sample will be reviewed by Dalhousie University in Canada. “The university will determine the efficacy of the vaccine.”

The trial will then enter phase IV which is when a vaccine is green-lighted for manufacturing, marketing, and distribution, he added.

A health official told Geo.tv that the data of Chinese vaccines, Sinopharm and Ad5-nCoV, has been submitted to the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) for grant of emergency use.

“First limited supply [of vaccine] likely to start in February,” the official added.

The first-ever large-scale trial in Pakistan was conducted at five centres; two in Karachi and Lahore each and, one in Islamabad.

In the federal capital, the Shifa International Hospital repurposed a building previously used for COVID-19 testing for the trial where volunteers, recruited through NGOs, hospitals and corporations, arrived by appointment to get the jab.

To volunteer, the individual must be 18 and above, not have tested positive for COVID-19, not have immune deficiencies, and not be pregnant for the trial duration.

The hospital also provided a one-time Rs2,000 compensation for travel and food expenses.

The clinical trial is being supervised by the National Institute of Health.

PCB announces Pakistan Test squad for series against South Africa

PCB announces Pakistan Test squad for series against South Africa
Pakistan Cricket Board on Friday announced a 20-member squad including nine uncapped players for the two-Test series against South Africa that starts January 26 in Karachi.

The players will enter the bio-secure bubble on January 19 and the squad will be trimmed to 16 players ahead of the first Test.

Openers Abdullah Shafique and Imran Butt, middle-order batsman Kamran Ghulam, Salman Ali Agha, and Saudi Shakeel, spinners Nauman Ali Khan and Sajid Khan, and pacers Haris Rauf and Tabish Khan have been rewarded for their stellar performances in the 2020-21 domestic season including the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

Hasan Ali has returned to the Test side after two years following a highly successful Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in which he was adjudged player of the final and tournament. Hasan, whose ninth and last Test appearance was against South Africa in Johannesburg, took 43 wickets and scored 273 runs in a fierce and highly competitive Quaid-e-Azam Trophy that included match figures of five for 129 and 106 not out in the second innings of the tied final.

Also returning to the side is left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz, who took 22 wickets with two-fers and scored 744 runs in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. He last played a Test against the West Indies in Sharjah in 2016.

Nawaz and Faheem Ashraf are the two-all-rounders in a side that also includes three openers, six middle-order batsmen, two wicketkeepers, three spinners, and four fast bowlers.

Haris Sohail, Mohammad Abbas, Shan Masood, and Zafar Gohar, who played in the last Test in Christchurch, have been left out. Haris, Abbas, and Shan will be invited to the High-Performance Centre in Lahore so that they can work on their technical faults with the qualified coaches. Zafar who made his Test Debut in Christchurch remains part of selectors' long-term plans in both red and white-ball cricket, and will also work with NHPC coaches on further improvement of his all-round skillset.

Fast bowler Naseem Shah was not considered for selection after complaining of a niggle in his hamstring. He will shortly commence his rehabilitation programme at the National High-Performance Centre.

Chief selector’s comments

Muhammad Wasim said the nine players have an outstanding opportunity to step-up show their class and potential and perform strongly so that they can cement their places for future international assignments.

“This is a reward for their consistent performance, hard work, and perseverance during a difficult season played under the strict Covid-19 protocols. This is also an endorsement that domestic cricket will be valued and respected and will remain a steppingstone for international cricket. All those players who aspire to represent Pakistan on the global stage will not only have to feature in it but also perform at the expected levels to earn the selectors’ nod,” he added.

He encouraged players who did not make the squad to retain focus as the PCB looks for a packed 2021. “I will like to see these players continue to focus on their fitness and form even after the curtain falls on the 2020-21 season so that whenever they get a call-up, they are ready to cash in on the opportunity.”

Wasim said Haris, Abbas and Shan have been dropped due to inconsistent performances, adding that the PCB “will not let its investment in these talented players go to waste” and has invited them to train at High Performance Centre in Lahore.

“Shan’s bad form has opened doors for Abid Ali’s new partner, be it either Abdullah Shafique or Imran Butt, who was last season’s top scorer. Together with Abdullah, he was in New Zealand with the Shaheens side.”

He said Kamran Ghulam (1,249 runs), Saud Shakeel (970 runs), and Salman Ali Agha (941 runs) walk into the middle-order to support Azhar Ali, Babar Azam, and Fawad Alam. “This is a formidable and highly skilled middle-order, which will encourage further healthy competition for a permanent place in the side.”

“The horses for courses policy means performers like left-arm spinner Nauman Ali, off-spinner Sajid Shah, and fast bowlers Haris Rauf and Tabish Khan will be available for selection, depending on the team composition for the first Test against South Africa in Pakistan in 14 years.

“Wrist spinner Zahid Mahmood had a strong case after an excellent season, but we decided against going into the series with all four inexperienced spinners,” said the chief selector. “Yasir Shah understands the pressures of international cricket and is familiar with the demands, challenges, and expectations of the purest format of the game.”

“Tabish Khan has been preferred over Sohail Khan as he is more effective and useful in Pakistan conditions. Like Mohammad Abbas, Tabish is a workhorse, who can bowl long spells with controlled line and length. His 598 career first-class wickets, including 30 wickets this season, is a testament that he is a like-to-like replacement for Mohammad Abbas in the given conditions.”

“Faheem Ashraf and Mohammad Nawaz are two all-rounders of contrasting skills and should provide more selection options to the team management.”

Malaysian authorities seize PIA Boeing 777 at Kuala Lumpur airport
Malaysian authorities on Friday seized a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Boeing-777 at the Kuala Lumpur airport.

The PIA plane was seized on the orders of a local Malaysian court over the non-payment of aircraft lease dues, sources disclosed.

PIA had leased two aircraft, including the Boeing-777, from a Vietnamese company in 2015.

The plane was seized after passengers had already boarded the aircraft. The aircraft's 18-member staff also become stranded in Kuala Lumpur due to the seizure, and will now quarantine for 14 days as per protocols, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the national flag carrier said that the PIA aircraft has been held back on the orders of a local court in Malaysia which, it argued, has taken a one-sided decision pertaining to a legal dispute between PIA and another party pending in a UK court.

"The passengers are being looked after and alternate arrangements for their travel have been finalised," read a tweet shared by PIA on its official account.

PTI submits ‘foreign funding proofs’ against PML-N, PPP to ECP
The ruling party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has submitted a new application to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to seek expediting scrutiny process against Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in foreign funding case, on Friday.

A PTI leader Farrukh Habib submitted an application to ECP for conducting daily hearing of foreign funding case against PML-N and PPP.
After submitting the new plea, Farrukh Habib addressed the journalists today where he claimed submission of ‘foreign funding proofs’ against PML-N and PPP.

“We had filed a petition against PML-N in 2017 and so far, dozens of session of the [ECP] scrutiny were conducted. We have submitted another plea to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) today and sought daily hearing of the case. Till today, no decision is made despite having clear guidance of the Supreme Court (SC).
Both political parties are just wasting the time of the ECP’s scrutiny committee and the fact have been revealed now, said Farrukh Habib. He claimed that PML-N is also facing an allegation of toppling late Benazir Bhutto’s government after receiving funds from Osama Bin Laden.

The PTI leader challenged Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Maryam Nawaz to do whatever they want to do during their protest outside ECP office on January 19. He continued that ECP summoned leaders of both political parties on January 18, whereas, ‘proofs’ against PML-N and PPP were also provided by him.

Habib said that PPP had hired a lobbyist in the United States (US) to get NRO which was mentioned in the records of US Justice and Law Foreign Act 1938 to whom they paid over $3 million after 2008.

Farrukh Habib said that both parties will have to respond ECP.

Schools to reopen from 18 january stepwise: Shfaqat mehmood
Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mahmood announced on Friday that classes one to eight will resume from Feb 1 instead of Jan 25.

Speaking at a press conference after chairing a meeting to review the Covid-19 situation ahead of phase-wise reopening of educational institutions from next week, he said classes nine to 12 and universities will resume on Jan 18 (Monday) and Feb 1, respectively, as per previous decision.

The minister said the country didn’t witness a significant drop in infections from November 26, stressing the need to create a balance between the health and education sector.

He pointed out that closing academic institutions had the biggest impact on the country’s national tally of coronavirus cases. Students suffered great educational loss last year but their health is the government’s foremost priority at the same time, he added.

Earlier on Jan 4, a meeting of education ministers had decided to reopen educational institutions across the country in a phase-wise manner with classes nine to 12 resuming in the first phase on January 18.

Mr Mahmood had said that primary classes will resume from January 25 in the second phase whereas universities and other higher education institutions will resume on-campus sessions from Feb 1.

Massive quake in Indonesia’s Sulawesi kills at least seven, injures hundreds

Massive quake in Indonesia’s Sulawesi kills at least seven, injures hundreds
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island killed at least seven people, injured hundreds and damaged many buildings on Friday, the country’s disaster mitigation agency said, as panicked residents fled to safer areas.

The epicentre of the quake was six kilometres (3.73 miles) northeast of Majene city at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Initial information from the country’s disaster mitigation agency showed that four people had died and 637 others were injured in Majene, while there were three more fatalities and two dozen injured in the neighbouring area of Mamuju.

Thousands had fled their homes to seek safety when the quake hit just after 1 am local time on Friday morning, damaging at least 60 homes, the agency said.

The quake was felt strongly for about seven seconds but did not trigger a tsunami warning.

Videos on social media showed residents fleeing to higher ground on motorcycles, and a child trapped under the rubble as people tried to remove debris with their bare hands.

Some buildings were badly damaged, including two hotels, the office of the governor of West Sulawesi and a mall, Sudirman Samual, a journalist based in Mamuju, north of the epicentre, told Reuters.

At least one route into Mamuju had been cut off, he said, due to damage to a bridge.

Hours earlier on Thursday, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck in the same district damaging several houses.

Indonesia’s disaster agency said a series of quakes in the past 24 hours had caused at least three landslides, and the electricity supply had been cut.

Straddling the so-called Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, Indonesia, a nation of high tectonic activity, is regularly hit by earthquakes.

In 2018, a devastating 6.2-magnitude quake and subsequent tsunami struck the city of Palu, in Sulawesi, killing thousands of people.

Rehearsal for Biden’s inauguration postponed due to security concerns

Rehearsal for Biden’s inauguration postponed due to security concerns
A rehearsal for U.S President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration scheduled for Sunday has been postponed because of security concerns, Politico reported late on Thursday, citing two people with knowledge of the decision.

The rehearsal is now planned for Monday, according to the report.

Biden’s team had also canceled an Amtrak trip from Wilmington to Washington planned for Monday due to heightened security concerns, the report added. Biden will be inaugurated on Jan. 20.

The president-elect’s team did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on Thursday.

Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray said earlier that the FBI was looking into individuals who could possibly threaten the safety of the inauguration.

A presidential inauguration traditionally draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to Washington, but the ceremonies have been scaled back dramatically because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Biden asked his nominee for deputy attorney general and former President Barack Obama’s counter-terrorism adviser, Lisa Monaco, to serve as a temporary homeland security adviser leading up to next week’s inauguration.

Officials have warned of plans for armed protests in Washington and all 50 states and activist groups have been concerned about the potential for violence.

The warnings follow last week’s assault on the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump that left five people dead.

Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol last Wednesday, trying to halt the certification by Congress of Biden’s election win.

Trump, who has challenged the validity of Biden’s victory without producing evidence, initially praised his supporters but later condemned the violence.

Moody’s forecasts Pakistan economy will grow 1.5pc

Moody’s forecasts Pakistan economy will grow 1.5pc
Moody’s Investor Service on Wednesday forecast Pakistan economy will grow by 1.5pc during the current fiscal year and found Pakistani banks to be stable owing to government support but banking sector risks were growing.

“Economic activity will remain below pre-outbreak levels, although the economy should return to modest 1.5pc growth in fiscal year 2021,” Moody’s said in its outlook for the Pakistani banking sector. This is generally in line with 1.5-2.5pc growth forecast for Pakistan GDP by the State Bank compared to World Bank’s 0.5pc GDP growth rate for the current fiscal year.

Long-term credit growth potential for Pakistani banking system was strong, given Pakistan’s large unbanked population, the agency said. The stable outlook reflected banks’ solid funding and liquidity, although a challenging — but improving — operating environment will weigh on asset quality and profitability.

“Despite a difficult environment, the government’s credit profile is stable due to ongoing reforms and increasing policy effectiveness — a positive for the banks given their outsized holdings of Pakistani government debt link their credit profiles to that of the government,” said Moody’s Senior Vice President Constantinos Kypreos.

The agency expects slow economic recovery to affect loan quality, with nonperforming loans (NPLs) expected to rise over the coming months from a sector-wide level of 9.9pc of gross loans in September 2020. “Banks’ foreign operations, export-oriented industries and companies reliant on government payments and subsidies will be hit hardest, but loan repayment holidays and other government support measures should help contain some risks,” it said.

Meanwhile, banks’ profitability, which has materially increased during 2020, will come under pressure on lowered margins, higher loan-loss provisions given the challenging operating environment, and subdued business generation. Still, Pakistan’s economy should return to a modest 1.5pc growth in fiscal year 2021, while government and central bank responses and reforms will partially soften the Covid-19 pandemic’s impact.

“Deposit-based funding and good liquidity buffers also remain strengths, while the probability of government support in a crisis is high, even if its ability to do so is limited by fiscal challenges,” added Kypreos.

The rating agency expected the operating conditions for banking sector to improve, but remain difficult. It noted that restrictions in place to contain the spread of the coronavirus will keep economic activity below pre-outbreak levels. The rating agency said Pakistani economy to return to modest growth of 1.5pc in fiscal 2021 after activity picked up at the start of the fiscal year in July. “Government and central bank policy responses and structural reforms will soften the pandemic’s impact but not fully offset it. In this environment, we expect private-sector lending to grow modestly, by 5-7pc, over the calendar year”.

It noted that banking capital was modest but will remain broadly stable: The sector-wide reported Tier-1 capital ratio stood at a comfortable 15.5pc as of September 2020. “If we adjust the ratios by risk-weighting government securities at 100pc, rather than zero per cent, however, the ratio halves to a modest level,” it said. The capital ratios were expected to remain broadly stable as Pakistani banks would remain profitable and would reduce their dividend payouts — hence asset growth was likely to be conservative.

Profitability of the banking had materially increased during 2020, but would come under some pressure in 2021 as net interest margins would narrow after a huge 625-basis-point interest rate cut in 2020. “Together with rising provisioning needs and subdued business generation, this will curb bottom-line profits,” the forecast added.

Moody’s noted that stable deposit funding and ample liquidity were strengths of the Pakistani banking sector. Customer deposits made up 70pc of total assets as of Sept 2020 are expected to grow by between 7pc and 9pc in 2021, driven by efforts to deepen financial inclusion and robust inward remittances. Highly liquid assets comprising cash and bank placements account for around 13pc of the banks’ total assets, while another 43pc of assets is invested in government securities.

The outlook noted that the probability of government’s support to banking sector in a crisis was high. “The government remains willing to support troubled banks but its ability to do so is limited by fiscal challenges reflected in its B3 rating,” the rating agency concluded.

South Korea's top court upholds prison term for ex-president Park

South Korea's top court upholds prison term for ex-president Park
South Korea’s Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a 20-year prison term for former president Park Geun-hye over bribery and other crimes as it wrapped up a historic corruption case that marked a striking fall from grace for the country’s first female leader and conservative icon.

The ruling means Park, who was ousted from office and arrested in 2017, could potentially serve a combined 22 years behind bars, following a separate conviction for illegally meddling in her party’s candidate nominations ahead of parliamentary elections in 2016.

But the finalising of her prison term also makes her eligible for a special presidential pardon, a looming possibility as the country’s deeply split electorate approaches the next presidential election in March 2022.

President Moon Jae-in, a liberal who won the presidential by-election following Park’s removal, has yet to directly address the possibility of freeing his predecessor. Moon has recently seen his approval ratings sink to new lows over economic problems, political scandals and rising coronavirus infections.

At least one prominent member of Moon’s Democratic Party, chairman Lee Nak-yon, has raised the idea of pardoning Park and another imprisoned former president, Lee Myung-bak, who’s serving a 17-year term over his own corruption charges, as a gesture for “national unity”.

Park, 68, has described herself a victim of political revenge. She has refused to attend her trials since October 2017 and didn’t attend Thursday’s ruling. Her lawyer didn’t return calls seeking comment.

Moon’s office didn’t have an immediate response to the ruling.

Park, the daughter of slain military dictator Park Chung-hee, was convicted of colluding with her longtime confidante, Choi Soon-sil, to take millions of dollars in bribes and extortion money from some of the country’s largest business groups, including Samsung, while she was in office from 2013 to 2016.

She was also indicted on charges of accepting illegal monthly funds from her spy chiefs that were diverted out of the agency’s budget.

Following weeks-long protests by millions, Park was impeached by lawmakers in December 2016 and officially removed from office in March 2017 after the Constitutional Court upheld the impeachment.

It wasn’t immediately clear how Thursday’s ruling would affect the legal saga of billionaire Samsung scion Lee Jae-yong.

The 52-year-old chairman of Samsung Electronics is facing a ruling at the Seoul High Court next week in a retrial over charges that he bribed Park and Choi to win government support for a 2015 merger between two Samsung affiliates that helped strengthen his control over the country’s largest business group.

Prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison term for Lee, who has been separately indicted on charges of stock price manipulation, breach of trust and auditing violations in relation to the merger.

Lee’s lawyers have portrayed him as a victim of presidential power abuse and described the 2015 deal was part of “normal business activity”.

Choi is currently serving an 18-year prison sentence.

Park originally faced a prison term of more than 30 years before the Supreme Court sent her cases back to a lower court in 2019.

The Seoul High Court in 2018 had sentenced her to 25 years in prison after reviewing her of bribery, extortion, abuse of power and other convictions together.

But the Supreme Court in October 2019 ordered the Seoul High Court to deal with Park’s bribery charge separately from other charges, based on a law requiring so for cases involving a president or other elected officials, even when the alleged crimes are committed together.

The High Court had handed Park a five-year term over the spy fund charges in July 2019, but the Supreme Court also ordered a retrial on the case in November, instructing the lower court to more broadly apply a charge of causing losses in state funds.

Prosecutors appealed after the Seoul High Court handed Park a 20-year term in July last year after merging the two cases.

If Park gets to fully serve her term, she will be released in 2039 at the age of 87.

Andy Murray tests positive for coronavirus before Australian Open

Andy Murray
Andy Murray has tested positive for the coronavirus days before he was due to leave Britain for the Australian Open, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The three-time Grand Slam champion is isolating at home near London and still hopes to compete in Australia when it is safe to travel, the person said.

Murray has been given a wild-card entry into the first Grand Slam tournament of 2021.

The Australian Open was delayed three weeks because of Covid-19 restrictions and is set to begin February 8. Players and officials must spend 14 days in quarantine once they arrive in Australia.

Murray, a five-time Australian Open runner-up, earlier backed out of the Delray Beach Open in Florida to “minimise the risks” of contracting the virus through international travel.

While a positive test threatens Murray’s participation in Australia, it doesn’t necessarily rule it out.

American player Tennys Sandgren was given special clearance to board a charter flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne despite testing positive for Covid-19 in November and again on Monday.

Under tournament protocols agreed with Australian government authorities, all players had to return a negative test before boarding their flights to Australia and would be subjected to further testing on arrival and daily during a 14-day period of quarantine.

Sandgren received an exemption after Australian health officials assessed his case history.

The first of about 1,200 players, coaches, entourage and officials were set to land on Thursday in Australia.

Tennis Australia said today that players who have previously tested positive for Covid-19 were “required to provide additional and highly detailed medical information as proof they are a recovered case and no longer infectious or a risk to the community”.

Murray has slipped to No. 122 in the ATP rankings after several years of battling hip injuries and surgery.

The 33-year-old Scot made a teary retirement announcement in Melbourne two years ago before undergoing a second round of surgeries to extend his career.

PDM to march to ECP's office in Islamabad on Jan 19 for 'decision' on PTI foreign funding case

PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb
PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Wednesday that the party, under the umbrella of the 10-party opposition alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), would take out rallies from different areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Jan 19 that would merge into one big rally before heading towards the office of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the capital.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad along with other party leaders, she said the rally was being organised to "get a decision from the ECP that it is not giving since 2014". She was referring to a foreign funding case against the PTI, which was filed in Nov 2014 by Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of the ruling party.

"The protest that the PDM is going to do on Jan 19 [is being done] to take the decision that has already been made today when the PTI has accepted that illegal funding has come through 23 foreign-funded accounts, [that] illegal funding could have been done through agents. [The PTI] accepted that money was gotten illegally through 23 foreign funded accounts that were not declared accounts and that money was [deposited] in PTI accounts [through cheques].

"Signs of President [Dr Arif Alvi], Sindh Governor [Imran Ismail] and Imran Khan sahib himself [along with] other PTI leaders are present on those cheques," she claimed.

PTI's explanation

In an apparent departure from its stance of denying any illegal funding from the United States, the PTI had on Wednesday, come up with an explanation that if any funds were collected illegally through two US companies registered after Imran Khan’s written instructions, the responsibility lies with their agents managing the two limited liability companies.

The PTI said in its reply submitted to the Election Commission that "any contribution that has been collected by the agent which may be questionable would be beyond the scope of the work/responsibility/instructions given by the principal (respondent)".

"The principal has given clear instructions and if the agent goes beyond those instructions without disclosing it to the principal, without seeking ratification of those acts and without even sending that money to the principal, then it is submitted that the principal will not be liable under section 228 and not admit/certify such contents. The fact that the principal neither had knowledge nor has received the proceeds exhibits the bona fide of the principal," the document carrying PTI’s reply went on to argue.

The party adopted the latest stance in a written reply to a questionnaire given to it by the scrutiny committee of the ECP, sources said.

The ECP committee met to continue scrutiny of PTI accounts under fresh directives to expedite the process, which has been going on since March 2018.

In the presser today, Aurangzeb said that the PTI has "accepted the decision that ECP is not giving since 2014" and the PDM workers would go to the commission's office on Jan 19 to take that decision from it.

"The case was registered in 2014. What reason does the ECP have [to delay a verdict] when the PTI has accepted that agents did illegal funding? They should be ready to write the judgement," she further said.

The PML-N spokesperson said that all routes of the rally had been decided and all preparations had been completed.

"[One] rally will start in Islamabad and head towards the ECP office. The Pindi rally will start from Nawaz Sharif Park and will go to the commission through Club Road," she said, adding that rallies taken out from other areas of the district would merge at Kashmir Chowk and head to the ECP office from there.

"PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz will preside over the rally and all PDM leaders will be there."

Maulana Fazlur Rehman should not make provocative statements: Rasheed

Federal Ministers
Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rasheed on Thursday said that Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman should refrain from making statements that are provocative and tend to spread hate.

Rasheed, as well as four other federal ministers — Minister for Defence Pervez Khattak, Minister for Information Shibli Faraz, Minister for Science Fawad Chaudhry, and Minister for Law Farogh Naseem — addressed a press conference after a cabinet committee meeting on public order.

Ahead of PDM's scheduled sit-in outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on January 19, the federal ministers urged the 11-party Opposition alliance to not take the law into their own hands.

Rasheed, speaking during the press conference, said that in the meeting the ministers exchanged views on the law and order situation in the country. "We hope that the Opposition does not negatively affect law and order during its protest outside the Election Commission of Pakistan," he said.

The minister remarked that the 11-party alliance, PDM, is now going to partake in the upcoming Senate polls — an election which they were previously against.

The law minister, Farogh Naseem, citing the Supreme Court's remarks in the Faizabad sit-in case, said that it was made clear that not every place is feasible for protests.

"The state will protect your rights within the law," he said.

Meanwhile, the science minister, Fawad Chaudhry, slamming the Opposition, said that they had criticised every state institution — and had not spared even a single one.

Rasheed, continuing further, said that Pakistan's politics had not reached a dead end and that it had come out on the battlefield.

Responding to a question, he said that the Islamabad police's attitude would change for the better.

'We will serve halwa to Maulana'

The railways minister, warning PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, said that he should refrain from chanting slogans that incite hatred.

Talking about madressahs, he said that a committee had been made that comprises Federal Minister for Religious Affairs and Inter-faith Harmony Pir Noor-ul-Haq Qadri and him.

"We consider religious forces to be the beacon of Islam," Rasheed added.

Later, speaking to the media, Information Minister Shibli Faraz said that Maulana (Fazlur Rehman) "does not eat pizza; we will serve him halwa (a sweet dish)".

"Staging protests in Islamabad is allowed and the prime minister has tweeted in this regard as well," he said.

"There will be no obstacles in the way of PDM's protest on January 19," he said, adding that specific spots should be marked for protests.

Donald Trump impeached by US House for second time

Donald Trump impeached by US House for second time
Outgoing US president Donald Trump achieved a rare feat on Wednesday as he became the first president to be impeached twice, this time on charges of inciting an insurrection in last week's violent attack in the Capitol.

The vote in the Democratic-controlled House was 232-197 following the deadly assault on American democracy, although it appeared unlikely the swift impeachment would lead to Trump's ouster before his four-year term ends and Democratic President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated on January 20.

The Senate's Republican majority leader, Mitch McConnell, rejected Democratic calls for a quick impeachment trial, saying there was no way to conclude it before Trump leaves office. But even if he has left the White House, a Senate conviction of Trump could lead to a vote on banning him from running for office again.

Biden said it was important that a Senate impeachment trial in the early days of his term not delay work on his legislative priorities, including Cabinet confirmations, and urged Senate leaders to find a way to do both at the same time.

The House passed a single article of impeachment — a formal charge — accusing Trump of "incitement of insurrection," focused on an incendiary speech he delivered a week earlier to thousands of supporters shortly before the pro-Trump mob rampaged through the Capitol.

The mob disrupted the formal certification of Biden's victory over Trump in the November 3 election, sent lawmakers into hiding and left five people dead, including a police officer.

During his speech, Trump repeated false claims that the election was fraudulent and exhorted supporters to march on the Capitol, telling them to "stop the steal," "show strength," "fight much harder" and use "very different rules."

In a video statement released after the House's action on Wednesday, Trump did not mention the impeachment vote and took no responsibility for his remarks to supporters last week, but condemned the violence.

"Mob violence goes against everything I believe in and everything our movement stands for. No true supporter of mine could ever endorse political violence. No true supporter of mine could ever disrespect law and order," Trump said.

With thousands of rifle-carrying National Guard troops inside and outside the Capitol, an emotional debate unfolded in the same House chamber where lawmakers had ducked under chairs and donned gas masks on January 6 as rioters clashed with police officers outside the doors.

"The president of the United States incited this insurrection, this armed rebellion against our common country," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, said on the House floor before the vote. "He must go. He is a clear and present danger to the nation that we all love."

At a later ceremony, she signed the article of impeachment before it is sent to the Senate, saying she did it "sadly, with a heart broken over what this means to our country."

No US president has ever been removed from office through impeachment. Three — Trump in 2019, Bill Clinton in 1998 and Andrew Johnson in 1868 — previously were impeached by the House but acquitted by the Senate.

Democratic congressman Joaquin Castro called Trump "the most dangerous man to ever occupy the Oval Office." Congresswoman Maxine Waters accused Trump of wanting civil war and fellow Democrat Jim McGovern said the president "instigated an attempted coup."

'President bears responsibility'

Some Republicans argued the impeachment drive was a rush to judgment that bypassed the customary deliberative process such as hearings and called on Democrats to abandon the effort for the sake of national unity and healing.

"Impeaching the president in such a short time frame would be a mistake," said Kevin McCarthy, the House's top Republican. "That doesn't mean the president is free from fault. The president bears responsibility for Wednesday's attack on Congress by mob rioters."

Trump's closest allies, such as Ohio Republican Jim Jordan, went further, accusing Democrats of recklessly acting out of pure political interest.

"This is about getting the president of the United States," said Jordan, who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump in a private White House ceremony this week. "It's always been about getting the president, no matter what. It's an obsession."

'I'm choosing truth'

Ten Republicans voted to impeach, including Liz Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican.

"I am not choosing a side, I'm choosing truth," Republican Jamie Herrera Beutler said in announcing her support for impeachment, drawing applause from Democrats. "It's the only way to defeat fear."

In a break from standard procedure, Republican House leaders refrained from urging their members to vote against impeachment, calling the vote a matter of individual conscience.

Under the US Constitution, impeachment in the House triggers a trial in the Senate. A two-thirds majority would be needed to convict and remove Trump, meaning at least 17 Republicans in the 100-member chamber would have to join the Democrats.

McConnell has said no trial could begin until the Senate was scheduled to be back in regular session next Tuesday, one day before Biden's inauguration. The trial would proceed in the Senate even after Trump leaves office.

McConnell, who is reported to be furious with Trump, said in a memo to his fellow Republicans that he had not made a final decision on how he will vote on impeachment in the Senate.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, set to become majority leader later this month, said in a statement that no matter the timing, "there will be an impeachment trial in the United States Senate; there will be a vote on convicting the president for high crimes and misdemeanors; and if the president is convicted, there will be a vote on barring him from running again."

Biden said work on the economy, getting the coronavirus vaccine program on track and confirming crucial Cabinet posts should not be delayed by the Senate trial.

"I hope that the Senate leadership will find a way to deal with their Constitutional responsibilities on impeachment while also working on the other urgent business of this nation," he said in a statement.

The Capitol siege raised concerns about political violence in the United States once considered all but unthinkable. The FBI has warned of armed protests planned for Washington and all 50 US state capitals ahead of Biden's inauguration.

Impeachment is a remedy devised by America's 18th century founders to enable Congress to remove a president who has, according to the Constitution, committed "treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors." If Trump were removed before January 20, Vice President Mike Pence would become president and serve out his term.

The House impeached Trump after he ignored calls for his resignation and Pence rebuffed Democratic demands to invoke a constitutional provision to remove the president.

The House previously voted to impeach Trump in December 2019 on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress stemming from his request that Ukraine investigate Biden and his son Hunter ahead of the election, as Democrats accused him of soliciting foreign interference to smear a domestic political rival. The Senate voted in February 2020 to keep Trump in office.

Pak Army soldier martyred as India resorts to unprovoked fire at LoC: ISPR

Sepoy Nabeel Liaqat
A Pakistan Army sepoy was martyred as India opened unprovoked fire at the Line of Control (LoC), the military's media wing said in a statement Thursday, in what came as the latest ceasefire violation (CFV) by New Delhi.

In its statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said troops of the Indian Army "initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation along LOC in Dewa Sector" and, in a prompt response, Pakistan Army "inflicted heavy losses to [the] enemy in terms of men and material".

IHC stops Naeem Bukhari from working as PTV chairman
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday restrained Chairman of the Pakistan Television (PTV) board Naeem Bukhari from discharging his official duties.

A single-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Athar Minallah gave this restraining order on a petition challenging Bukhari’s appointment as chairman of the PTV board and acting managing director of the state-run television.

During the hearing, the chief justice observed that the Supreme Court’s judgement regarding the PTV is on record. A summary was sent to the federal cabinet for Bukhari’s appointment without taking into account the SC verdict, he noted.

The court referred the matter to the cabinet to review it in light of the SC verdict and make an appropriate decision and stopped Naeem Bukhari from acting as the PTV chairman till the decision is made.

At a previous hearing, Justice Minallah questioned how such appointment in the PTV was made in the presence of the very clear judgement of the Supreme Court. Prima facie, the appointment of Bukhari seems to be in violation of the verdict of the apex court, he observed.

The petitioner said Naeem Bukhari’s appointment was not in accordance with the SC guidelines. He contended that the position was not advertised in any newspaper, which is mandatory. Moreover, he added that Bukhari is also over 65 years.

US House impeaches Trump for a second time
Donald Trump on Wednesday became the first president in US history to be impeached twice, as 10 of his fellow Republicans joined Democrats in the House of Representatives to charge him with inciting an insurrection in last week’s violent rampage in the Capitol.

Addressing a joint press conference with his counterparts from Turkey and Azerbaijan, Qureshi said the three leaders talked "atrocities against Muslim minorities and Islamophobia", as well as the promotion of education and culture.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, on the other hand, said his country and Pakistan supported each other.

"Pakistan and Turkey need to increase combined trade volume, [which, at the moment] is only $800 million," he underscored. "We're increasing our defense cooperation with Pakistan and we will continue to support and promote security, stability, and prosperity."

Noting that Turkey supported solving the Kashmir issue as per the United Nations (UN) resolutions, Çavuşoğlu said his country "express(es) heartfelt solidarity with Kashmiris brothers".

The Turkish foreign minister expressed gratitude at being conferred the Hilal-e-Pakistan award, terming receiving it "a sign of brotherhood".

"We want to increase cooperation in defense and various other fields," he added.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in his remarks, spoke of the Nagorno-Karabakh region, inviting Pakistan and Turkey for reconstruction in the "liberated territories".

Pakistani and Turkish companies were invited to invest in the newly-liberated territories of Azerbaijan, Bayramov said. "We are grateful for the support of Pakistan and Turkey during the Nagorno-Karabakh war," he stated.

Andy Flower to replace Misbah-ul-Haq after PSL: Shoaib Akhtar

head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, former pacer Shoaib Akhtar
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has offered the coaching job to former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower to replace head coach Misbah-ul-Haq, former pacer Shoaib Akhtar claimed on Wednesday.

According to Geo Super, Akhtar, making the claim on his famous YouTube channel, said that Flower will take over after season six of Pakistan Super League (PSL) is over.

“PCB has already offered Andy Flower the head coach job. He is not accepting it due to his coaching commitment with Multan Sultans. But once PSL is over, he’ll take over,” Akhtar said. “The decision to sack Misbah is already taken. They are not giving him any chance. “

Earlier on Tuesday, Misbah and bowling coach Waqar Younis appeared before PCB Cricket Committee to explain the recent series losses against New Zealand. The coaching duo was given a reprieve on account of injuries and problems caused by the pandemic.

The board has scheduled another Cricket Committee meeting following South Africa series, giving the coaching staff a lifeline.

“It’s all lies! The whole performance review thing after South Africa series is not true. They have already signed contract with Flower,” Akhtar said.

The fast bowler criticised the board for appointing Misbah in the first place, calling them both "mediocre".

“PCB knowingly appoints average people so it could remove them in six months to avoid criticism. It’s a mediocre organisation appointing mediocre players,” he said.

Akhtar also mocked bowling coach Waqar Younis's willingness to work under Misbah. “The greatest fast bowler in the history of cricket is working under Misbah. Fear God, Vicky bhai!” he said.

“You [Waqar] complain that Misbah doesn’t listen to you. Why would he when he is the head coach? How could you work under him?” Akhtar asked.

The pacer added that it is an alarming situation for Pakistan cricket and he is afraid of the team getting humiliated by South Africa at home.

Pakistan will play South Africa for two Tests and three T20Is from January 26 to February 14.
