Nadeem Babar has been asked by PM Imran Khan to step down amid probe into petrol crisis: Asad

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Petroleum Nadeem Babar has been asked by Prime Minister Imran Khan to step down from his role as recommendations by a committee probing the petrol crisis are put into effect.

The decision was announced by Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar in a press conference on Friday to discuss findings by the Federal Investigation Agency in a probe ordered by the premier to ascertain the reasons behind petroleum shortages in the country.

"Secretary for Petroleum Division (Mian Asad Hayauddin) will also be asked to report to the Establishment Division once his replacement is finalised," Umar added.

Umar warned against speculation and clarified that the decision in no way means that the two individuals have been found to have engaged in any wrongdoing.

"The prime minister has decided that the entire chain (responsible for the crisis) has to be investigated [...] this decision was made so that no doubt remains of any one person's possible involvement," the minister said.

Umar, in his detailed media briefing also went over the final recommendations made by the cabinet committee probing the matter.

The committee is comprised of Umar himself, along with federal ministers Shafqat Mehmood, Azam Swati and Shireen Mazari.

"We forwarded our recommendations to the prime minister, after which he asked for some additional information. When some more information came to the fore, we were given the go ahead to share our recommendations," said the minister.

He said these recommendations have been divided into three categories.

In the first category, criminal acts have been detailed for which the committee seeks to register criminal cases.

"The evidence to be formulated in a way that charges can be brought. FIA has been told to do a forensic audit so that within 90 days prosecution efforts can begin," Umar said.

The following are the areas that FIA has been tasked to investigate:

- Was the legal requirement for a minimum inventory fulfilled by the oil companies?

- Were the sales figures that were reported actual numbers or was there a discrepancy between what was reported on paper and what was actual? Who reported these?

- Was the product hoarded? If so, then who was responsible?

"These are all those things which in the report are prima facie [...] it was determined that these did occur. So I am just saying that the evidence has to be given such a shape that it is prosecutable in court," explained Umar.

He also spoke of certain deficiencies in the system, which also saw legal violations, for example undue advantage taken of a temporary marketing licences, illegal hospitality agreements for where the product will be kept, and the product's sales at illegal outlets.

The minister also spoke of a key allegation in the report regarding delayed berthing of an oil ship so that when new rates are notified, the product can be sold at a higher rate. "A forensic investigation and pinpointing in this also needs to be done to ascertain who was responsible," Umar said.

He said illegal sales will also be covered in the forensic audit.

"Action will not only be limited to fines. [We will ensure] people are handcuffed and sent to jail."

The minister further said that although oil retail companies and fuel stations will be probed in the forensic audit, it must also investigate which government officials facilitated such criminal acts.

"The Petroleum Division will be investigated, as well as OGRA (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority), Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Port Authority," for all the illegal, aforementioned acts, said Umar.

He said the other part of the recommendations are administrative actions.

"Some people sitting in administrative roles were said to not be skilled enough to sit in these positions. The Petroleum Division has been asked to look into this and report to the prime minister as soon as possible," he said.

Umar said that the system under which the petrol sector operates has two key players: the Petroleum Division representing the executive branch and OGRA, which is the regulator.

He said the legal provisions which have been drawn up for these to operate under have fallen under scrutiny after the petroleum crisis.

"What is the responsibility of OGRA, the regulator and what is the responsibility of the Petroleum Division?" Umar asked figuratively, before adding: "A law will be made which will make these roles clear, so no ambiguity remains."

He said whenever issues were brought up before the cabinet committee, the lack of clarity of the roles of the two players in the sector, was always a matter of debate.

"OGRA would say so and so is Petroleum Division's responsibility and the Petroleum Division would say the same for OGRA, each citing different clauses of the law," Umar said.

He said the law was also found to be very weak in punitive actions. "So the law will be revisited and the punishments will be made proportionate to the crime committed."

Umar said overall improvements in the Petroleum Division which must be made have also been identified and will be sent to them for them to make an action plan.

The plan will be shared with the Cabinet Committee on Energy and then with the Cabinet for approval.

The minister said that "now the time has come for punishments" and the prime minister has made absolutely clear that this "mafia" and others that have operating for decades under the "leadership of past rulers", "will not be spared".

Four killed in Bangladesh as protesters, police clash during visit by Indian PM Narendra Modi

Four killed in Bangladesh as protesters
Four people were killed in the Bangladeshi city of Chittagong on Friday after police resorted to firing upon a large number of protesters who had gathered to demonstrate against a visit to the country by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Police claimed that the group of protesters had attacked a police station in the city.

Dozens were also hurt in the capital Dhaka where police used rubber bullets and teargas in clashes with violent protesters, witnesses said.

In Chittagong, thousands of supporters of a religious group that accuses Modi of alienating minority Muslims in India streamed out of mosques after prayers to register their protest against his visit, police official Rafiqul Islam said.

"We had to fire teargas and rubber bullets to disperse them as they entered a police station and carried out extensive vandalism," he told Reuters, referring to protesters.

He made no mention of police using live rounds. Another police official, Mohammad Alauddin, said a Chittagong hospital had received eight people with gunshot wounds, adding: "Among them four succumbed to their injuries."

He identified the dead as three students and a tailor.

Modi landed in Dhaka on Friday for a two-day visit to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh's independence.

After being received by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Modi met opposition and government leaders.

Hundreds of protesters then clashed with police near a large mosque in Dhaka, witness Jahangir Alam said. He said dozens were hurt when police fired rubber bullets and teargas after protesters pelted them with stones and set ablaze motorcycles.

Social media network Facebook and its Messenger app, which are often used to organise protests in the country, appeared to be down in some parts of Bangladesh.

An official from Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission declined to comment. A Facebook representative did not immediately respond to questions from Reuters.

Supreme Court orders restoration of Punjab's local govt

Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Thursday heard a petition seeking the restoration of Punjab's local bodies. The Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed heard the case.

During the hearing, the Punjab government's counsel Qasim Chauhan maintained that one of the reasons for not holding the local bodies elections in the province was the ongoing pandemic.

In response, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan said that the elections were announced six months after the local government departments were abolished, adding that the date for the proposed elections was extended for another 21 months and the decision to hold them is now subject to approval from the Council of Common Interests.

Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan further said that the federal, provincial, and local governments can be abolished for a limited period, but [by not holding local bodies elections for such a long time] people have been deprived of their representatives.

Replying to the counsel's argument that the elections were delayed due to the pandemic, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan reminded him that the Gilgit-Baltistan elections were also held despite the pandemic.

In his remarks, the CJP said that repealing laws and reintroducing them overnight is something "unprecedented across the globe."

Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed said: "How can you explain that people should be kept away from elected representatives? Laws can be made under Article 140 but institutions cannot be abolished. Who has given you the wrong suggestion of bringing about an act."

"Every government has a status, whether it is federal, provincial, or a local one."

The Supreme Court said that Section 3 of the Punjab Local Government Act violates Article 140A of the Constitution and is unconstitutional.

The Chief Justice added that the people elected the local body representatives for five years, therefore, they cannot be sent home on the basis of a notification.

The Supreme Court accepted the pleas filed by PML-N leader Danial Aziz and citizen Asad Ali Khan and ordered the restoration of the local bodies of Punjab.

NAB postpones Maryam Nawaz's March 26 hearing scheduled in Lahore

Maryam Nawaz
The National Accountability Bureau on Thursday announced it has postponed the hearing of PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz which was due to take place tomorrow.

According to a press release by NAB, a meeting was held today to discuss the hearing along with the recommendations provided by the National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) in view of the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

The meeting was informed that NCOC has banned gatherings of all kinds.

The statement said that although Maryam had been summoned to appear before NAB's investigation team on March 26, in view of the NCOC's recommendations and for the general good of the public, it was decided that the hearing will be postponed.

The date for the hearing will be announced at a later time, the statement added.

The press release stated that when Maryam had last made an appearance the NAB Lahore office had "deliberately been assaulted and pelted with stones which is tantamount to hampering NAB's investigation".

NAB noted that a case was registered against the "culprits behind such unlawful acts" in the relevant police station.

It warned that under the National Accountability Ordinance's Section 31 (a), demonstrating a non-cooperative attitude in NAB's investigation, hampering the investigation or misleading the officers conducting the probe, can lead to a 10-year imprisonment.

"Despite these legal provisions, NAB has thus far demonstrated patience and forbearance," the press release said.

In the meeting, it was also decided that the security arrangements made for NAB must be given back.

Following notices sent to Maryam for the hearing, the Pakistan Democratic Movement had pledged its support to the PML-N leader, with the chief of the alliance, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, declaring that supporters numbering in the "hundreds of thousands" will accompany her.

NAB had cited fears of a possible attack on its building the day the PML-N leader is expected to appear.

Elaborate security arrangements had been made in view of this, with the NAB Lahore office declared a "red zone" and Punjab Rangers and police directed to provide protection to the bureau staff.

Sources said at the time approval was granted for Punjab Rangers and police personnel to be deployed within the NAB office and surrounding areas on March 25 and 26.

Prime Minister Imran Khan, in a meeting with the government media team today, had vowed that no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands.

In August last year, when Maryam had been summoned by the anti-corruption watchdog to respond in a case of alleged illegal transfer of government land, violent clashes between PML-N workers and police took place.

Whereas Maryam branded the incident “state-sponsored terrorism” and said the government is "afraid of losing grip on power", NAB said it had never in its 20 years of existence ever experienced such “hooliganism” whereby its offices were vandalised.

What should have been a routine appearance before the anti-graft body, turned into a series of events that ran late into the evening, with the party as well as government officials engaged in an effort to seize the narrative.

While Maryam accused the police of firing tear gas shells and baton-charging party workers, and moreover of a deliberate attempt to cause her injury, the government said the violence was initiated by PML-N which has a “history” of “launching attacks against law enforcement”.

Later in the day, as many as two dozen of the party's workers were arrested, with the government vowing to hold all those responsible to account.

Additionally, the following day Maryam Nawaz, her husband Safdar Awan and 188 party workers were booked by police.

A case was registered at the Chohang police station against 300 unidentified persons — including the 188 PML-N workers — with charges including violence against police personnel.

According to the first information report registered, 13 policemen were injured in the clashes.

Islamabad markets to remain closed on Friday and Saturday in line with new NCOC directives
Islamabad's administration has amended days for commercial activities in line with the National Command and Operations Centre's (NCOC) recommendations that will remain in place till April 11.

In a notification, the District Magistrate's Office said all commercial activities, establishments, and areas will close by 10pm on weekdays and shall remain completely closed on weekends — Fridays and Saturdays.

Indoor dining in restaurants has been banned, however, outdoor dining is permitted till 10pm on weekdays only. On weekends, both indoor and outdoor dining will be prohibited in the capital, whereas takeaway and home delivery will be permitted.

"50% work from home policy will be implemented in ICT with immediate effect," the notification said, adding the cinemas and shrines will continue to remain closed.

The ban imposed on indoor gatherings will remain in place, while outdoor events will be allowed with a cap of 300 persons — with strict adherence to COVID-19 SOPs.

"There shall also be a complete ban on sports, festivals, cultural and other events," the notification said.

All types of marriage halls, community centers, and marquees shall remain closed, and only outdoor functions in open areas shall be allowed till 10pm, with a maximum of 300 people and a duration of two hours.

Pakistan schools in coronavirus hotspot areas to stay closed till April 11

Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood
Schools in Pakistan that are located in coronavirus hotspot areas will remain closed till April 11, Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood announced Wednesday.

He was speaking to the media after an important meeting of education and health ministers at the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) to decide on the closure of schools amid an alarming rise of coronavirus cases in the country.

The number of COVID-19 active cases has doubled in the last three weeks while the positivity ratio has remained above 8% in the last few days. According to the NCOC data, the number of active cases was 17,352 on March 6 which reached 36,849 on Wednesday.

Mehmood said the government will hold a meeting with the Cambridge exams board to see whether examinations can be postponed or not.

Board examinations of classes nine to 12 will be held as per the timetable, he said.

We have seen that the number of cases in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Kashmir has increased, he said. “The number of infections is relatively less in Sindh, Balochistan and Gilgit-Balochistan,” Mehmood said.

The education minister said keeping in view the coronavirus situation, the provincial governments will decide the districts where educational institutions will remain closed.

Mehmood said the government is cognizant of the fact that the closure of educational institutions is affecting the education of children. However, he said the health of children is priority.

The federal minister said that the next meeting of the education and health ministers will be held on April 7 to review the whole situation.

On Sunday, Mehmood took to his Twitter account and reminded the masses that the third wave of the coronavirus is serious, therefore, it requires careful review.

"All education/health ministers will meet Wednesday, March 24, at the NCOC to take a decision regarding opening or further closure of educational institutions," the minister wrote.

"The health of students, teachers, [and staff is of] primary consideration."

In a separate statement on Monday, Mehmood said that he was not in favour of shutting down educational institutes but the NCOC believed that there’s a high risk of coronavirus in schools.

“50 million children are linked with education and if someone got infected, the disease would spread," he said.

It is pertinent to note that schools, colleges and universities were allowed to resume regular classes from March 1 but the Sindh government did not follow suit saying the situation has not improved.

On March 10, the federal government had announced a two-week Spring Break in Islamabad, Peshawar and seven Punjab cities where the positivity was high and imposed restrictions to control the spread.

The health officials have warned that the UK variant, which has wreaked havoc in Punjab and the federal capital, spreads faster and is more deadly.

In view of a surge in coronavirus cases in the country, the NCOC on Monday issued renewed standard operating procedures (SOPs) to contain the virus, saying that these would be implemented with immediate effect.

As per the new guidelines, all businesses will only be allowed to operate five days a week, while all commercial activities will be closed by 8:00pm in areas with a positivity ratio greater than 8%.

The forum expressed grave concern over the current COVID-19 situation in the country and unanimously agreed to implement some high impact interventions in cities and districts with a high positivity ratio.

Senate chairman poll, IHC reserves verdict on Gillani’s petition

Senate chairman poll, IHC reserves verdict on Gillani’s petition
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) reserved on Wednesday a verdict on former prime minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani’s petition challenging the election of the Senate chairman.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah took up the petition. After a preliminary hearing, the court reserved its judgement on the maintainability of the petition, which is likely to be announced shortly.

During the hearing, the top IHC judge suggested that the petitioner could send a reference to the National Assembly speaker under Article 63 to have his grievance redressed.

“Has the Senate chairman ever been removed from the post in the past?” Justice Minallah asked Farooq H Naek, who represented Gillani. “What is the procedure for removal of the Senate chairman?” he further asked.

The judge observed that the court abstains from unnecessarily intervening in the matter. “You can take the matter to a Senate committee,” he suggested. At this, the counsel said no committee has powers to dislodge the Senate chairman.

Senator Gillani moved the petition through his counsel Farooq H Naek requesting the high court to declare the result of the election of Senate chairman held on March 12 “illegal, unlawful and void”.

He further demanded that the IHC declare the rejection of seven votes polled in favour of the petitioner illegal and suspend the notification dated March 13 regarding the re-election of Sadiq Sanjrani as Senate chairman and restrain him from carrying out his duties in this capacity until this petition is decided.

Gillani alleged in his petition that the government attempted to influence the result of the election to the seat of Senate chairman to win it by hook or crook.

“During the process of counting of votes the Presiding Officer (Syed Muzaffar Hussain Shah) arbitrarily rejected 7 of the votes (the rejected votes) cast in the petitioner’s favour on the ground that stamp is affixed on the name of the petitioner despite protest of the petitioner’s polling agent Senator Farooq H. Naek that the stamp had been fixed within the box containing the name of the petitionern,” he contended.

“The votes rejected by the presiding officer clearly evince the voter’s intent to vote for the petitioner and no one else,” the petitioner argued. Moreover, he added, these are in compliance with the notice affixed near the polling booth as well as the understanding conveyed by the Senate secretary.

In call with COAS Bajwa, US defence chief reiterates commitment to ‘maintaining strong’ ties with Pakistan

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa
US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin on Sunday reiterated Washington's "commitment to maintaining strong bilateral defense relationship with Pakistan".

The Pentagon chief renewed the commitment in a phone call with Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa on March 21.

"Secretary Austin reinforced the United States’ commitment to maintaining a strong bilateral defense relationship with Pakistan and expressed gratitude for Islamabad’s continued support for the Afghan peace process," said a press statement issued by the Department of Defense.

In the phone call, the US defence chief noted that he looks forward to "further cooperation" between the two countries in areas of common interest.

The phone call came just weeks before Washington is due to withdraw the last of its troops under a deal struck with the Afghan Taliban and Austin's unannounced trip to Afghanistan on Sunday.

Kabul was the last stop on a whirlwind tour of Asia for the new Pentagon chief, a former career soldier who served in Afghanistan as a division commander from September 2003 until August 2005.

Austin and his entourage flew into Afghanistan on a US-liveried aircraft instead of a military plane that usually carries US officials to the war-torn country.

Details of his visit were kept under wraps for security reasons until after he left.

Before Kabul, Austin had a series of meetings with Indian leadership during his visit to New Delhi.

COVID-19 vaccine: China will prioritise fulfilment of Pakistan’s needs: Wang Yi

 Wang Yi
China will prioritise the fulfilment of Pakistan’s COVID-19 needs, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday.

The Chinese foreign minister, in a telephonic conversation with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi, said that China will donate more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to Pakistan by March 31 to help the country fight coronavirus.

Wang Yi said that over a 100 countries had approached China to get the vaccine but they would prioritise the fulfilment of Pakistan’s COVID-19 needs.

The telephonic conversation encompassed the pandemic situation as well as the bilateral and other matters of mutual interests, a foreign ministry press release said.

Qureshi told Wang Yi that the government had formulated a comprehensive strategy to vaccinate the citizens against COVID-19 for which the country would require further doses of the vaccine.

In response, the Chinese FM assured to provide more vaccine doses by end of the current month.

Qureshi thanked the Chinese counterpart for the goodwill gesture. He said the Chinese assistance to the world particularly Pakistan during the challenging situation the pandemic was exemplary.

The foreign minister told his Chinese counterpart that Pakistan’s government was taking all precautionary measures, including the smart lockdown as per the vision of Prime Minister Imran Khan.

He also thanked the Chinese leadership for expressing good wishes, through a letter, for Prime Minister Imran Khan who had tested positive on Saturday.

Both the leaders had a detailed discussion on bilateral ties and multiple cooperation besides agreeing to keeping up the high-level contacts between the two countries.

NAB Lahore office declared 'red zone' ahead of Maryam's hearing on March 26

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz
The Ministry of Interior on Tuesday approved a request by the National Accountability Bureau to declare their Lahore office a "red zone" and for security to be provided to the bureau on the day of PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz's hearing.

Maryam has been summoned by NAB on March 26 in connection with the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case, as well as the purchase of land in Raiwind.

According to sources, the Punjab government's sub-cabinet committee on law and order approved the declaration of the NAB office as a red zone during Maryam's appearance.

NAB had cited fears of a possible attack on its building the day the PML-N leader is expected to appear.

Sources said approval has been granted for Punjab Rangers and police personnel to be deployed within the NAB office and surrounding areas on March 25 and 26.

Punjab Minister for Law Raja Basharat has said that no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands and strict action will be taken against those who disturb law and order and violate coronavirus safety protocols.

Pakistan Democratic Movement chief Fazlur Rehman, in a gesture of support on Sunday, said that during Maryam's hearing with NAB, the opposition alliance will show up in an act of solidarity with the PML-N leader.

"The apparent reasons cited by NAB (for the summons) have exposed the bureau for the puppet institution it is. It has approached the court for cancellation of [Maryam's] bail on the basis that she speaks against institutions.

"So the institution has been formed not to combat corruption but to serve other institutions," he said.

Fazlur Rehman said that when she appears before NAB on Friday, all of the PDM's workers and leaders will be right there with her.

He went on to say that the workers will number "not thousands, but hundreds of thousands".

It will be decided later who among the leaders will be present, but nonetheless, we will be there and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with her, the PDM chief said.

Clashes outside NAB office last year

Jack Dorsey's first ever tweet sells for $2.9m

Twitter founder Jack Dorsey
Twitter founder Jack Dorsey's first ever tweet has been sold for the equivalent of $2.9m (£2.1m) to a Malaysia-based businessman.

The tweet, which said "just setting up my twttr," was first published on March 21, 2006 and was auctioned off by Mr Dorsey for charity.

The Malaysia-based buyer Sina Estavi compared the purchase to buying a Mona Lisa painting.

The tweet was bought using the ether cryptocurrency, a rival to bitcoin.

It was sold as a nonfungible token (NFT) on Monday to Mr Estavi, the chief executive of technology firm Bridge Oracle.

An NFT is a unique digital certificate that states who owns a photo, video or other form of online media. Each NFT is unique and acts as a collector's item that can't be duplicated, making them rare by design.

NFTs have become hugely popular this year, with expensive digital artwork also being sold this way.

Mr Dorsey said he would convert the proceeds to bitcoin and then donate them to the Give Directly's Africa Response fund.

"This is not just a tweet!" Mr Estavi posted on Twitter. "I think years later people will realize the true value of this tweet, like the Mona Lisa painting."

Mr Dorsey's brief tweet was sold via an auction on an online platform called Valuables, which is owned by the US-based company Cent.

Under the platform's rules, Mr Dorsey receives 95% of the proceeds of the primary sale, while Cent receives 5%.

But the post will remain publicly available on Twitter even after it has been auctioned off. Within minutes of the auction bids reached more than $88,000.

As the buyer, Mr Estavi will receive a certificate, digitally signed and verified by Mr Dorsey, as well as the metadata of the original tweet. The data will include information such as the time the tweet was posted and its text contents.

Social media experts predict the sale of tweets and other online posts will become more popular.

"We live in an age where celebrities, musicians and influencers have more than fans, they have stans, and they will want to own a piece of their favourite stars," said Cathy Hackl, founder of technology consultancy Futures Intelligence Group.

"Just like people buy physical memorabilia, they will buy their tweets, posts, and snaps because they want to feel close to that star".

Earlier this month, the first digital-only art auction was held by Christie's auction house and netted $69m for the artist Beeple.

Beeple - real name Mike Winkelmann - creates a new piece of digital art every day, and was selling the first 5,000 days (13 years) of his work.

"This is a watershed moment and proof of concept for digital art, which has been dogged by questions of commercial value, authenticity, ownership and scarcity," said Rob Anders, boss of Israel-based digital art platform Niio.

Mr Estavi and Bridge Oracle didn't immediately respond to requests for comment when contacted by the BBC.

Sarina Isa moves SC to initiate contempt proceedings against Fawad Chaudhry over 'highly offensive' tweet

Sarina Isa and Fawad choudhry
Supreme Court Justice Qazi Faez Isa's wife Sarina Isa on Monday filed an application in the apex court for initiating contempt of court proceedings against Minister For Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain over a "highly offensive" tweet.

In a tweet earlier this week, Hussain had said that he had been "listening to the speeches of an undertrial judge (Justice Isa) of the Supreme Court for a week. If [I] answer, then lectures will start [ranging from] we are saddened to we have been insulted.

"Sir, if you too are fond of politics like your godfather Iftikhar Chaudhry (former chief justice of Pakistan), then resign and contest elections for the councillor. You will get to know about both [your] popularity and acceptance," Hussain had further said.

In her petition, Sarina said Hussain through his tweet had "confirmed that secret cameras have been installed in the courtroom because he was hearing all that happened in [it], despite never having once attended a single hearing".

She contended that her husband was still a judge of the Supreme Court and not an "undertrial prisoner", adding that by referring to Justice Isa as an undertrial judge, the federal minister had "committed contempt of this court and of a sitting judge of this court".

She also referred to Hussain's use of the word godfather in his tweet, saying that it was a term used for criminal syndicates and mafia bosses and was thus "highly offensive to the dignity and respect of this honourable court [and] constitutes gross contempt".

"Ch Fawad Hussain has violated his ministerial oath of office, the Constitution of Pakistan, mocked and ridiculed this honourable court's former chief justice, a sitting judge of the Supreme Court and committed contempt of this honourable court," the petition stated.

"If judges of the highest court of Pakistan are humiliated, disrespected and abused in this manner by a federal minister, then the Twitter brigade at their command and the combatants of the 5th generation warfare do much worse," it added.

Sarina said that Hussain had "encouraged a barrage of attacks against Justice Isa" and he and others in the government wanted Justice Isa "not to hold his government accountable".

She added that the minister's tweets "present an intolerant and autocratic government and the image of a powerless Supreme Court, which has serious repercussions and undermines the independence and credibility of this honourable court".

Sarina requested the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against Hussain, punish him appropriately, remove him from office and direct him to shut down his Twitter account.

Pakistan Day parade postponed due to inclement weather and rains: ISPR

Pakistan Day parade
The Pakistan Day parade scheduled to be held tomorrow (Tuesday) has been postponed due to forecast of "inclement weather and rain" over the next two days, the military's media wing said in a statement on Monday.

The parade will now be held on March 25, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

"The Joint Services Pakistan Day Parade will now be held on 25th March, 2021 as per program and timings already specified," it said.

Pakistan Day commemorates the passing of the Lahore Resolution on March 23, 1940, when the All-India Muslim League demanded a separate nation for the Muslims of the British Indian Empire.

The day usually begins with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad while provincial capitals mark it with 21-gun salutes. The Pakistan Day military parade is held at Parade Ground near the Shakarparian hills in Islamabad. The annual parade is attended by civil and military leadership as well as foreign dignitaries.

Fly-past demonstrations are also held to mark the day.

The parade also showcases the local cultures of the four provinces. Cultural delegates and floats from Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir are featured during the ceremony.

However, last year's celebrations were scaled down because of the coronavirus pandemic as leaders vowed to combat the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.

Concerns had arisen regarding this year's celebrations as well as the third wave of the novel coronavirus intensified in the country and more than 3,000 new cases were reported for the last five days.

Gillani challenges rejection of seven votes in IHC

Gillani challenges rejection of seven votes in IHC
Former prime minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani filed on Monday a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) challenging the rejection of seven votes in the election of Senate chairman.

Pakistan Medical Association demands full lockdown across country

Pakistan Medical Association demands full lockdown across country
The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA), along with other representative organisations, held a joint press conference in Lahore on Sunday, March 21, and stressed the government impose a full, countrywide lockdown to control the rising number of coronavirus cases.

The conference was presided over by PMA President Dr Ashraf Nizami, while he was joined by PMA Lahore's Vice-President Dr Khalid Mahmood Khan, PMA Lahore's Lady Vice-President Dr Erum Shahzadi, President of PMA Punjab Dr Tanveer Anwar, Pakistan Islamic Medical Association's Punjab President Dr Imran Zafar, and several other physicians.

During the press briefing, Dr Ashraf Nizami said that aside from imposing a full-fledged lockdown, the government must also ensure the availability of coronavirus vaccines to the public.

"[Owing to a surge in COVID-19 cases], the government must immediately declare a state of emergency, especially in Punjab," Dr Ashraf Nizami said, adding that the government had previously adopted a lockdown policy due to the mounting pressure from different organisations.

"The countrywide COVID-19 positivity ratio has exceeded 10 %," Dr Nizami said. "Despite that, the government has committed criminal negligence in the provision of vaccines."

On the other hand, Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Asad Umar on Saturday dismissed rumours that the country was heading towards a "complete lockdown".

"Complete lockdown is not the solution," Asad Umar said. "We tried to explain that to people during the first wave [of the coronavirus] but they did not understand. You cannot shut down the entire country and steal people's livelihoods," added the minister.

Umar, however, had hinted at "targeted interventions", saying that the government tries to take steps that would not affect people's livelihoods.

The minister said the NCOC had identified coronavirus hotspot areas to provincial governments. He said the implementation of these smart lockdowns were not satisfactory.

As of Sunday, March 21, there were 3,677 new coronavirus cases reported across the country. According to the NCOC, there were 44 coronavirus deaths reported on March 20, while the overall positivity ration has increased to 8.7%. At present, there are 31,107 active coronavirus cases in the country.

Health workers rally on Myanmar's streets after deadly crackdown

Health workers rally on Myanmar's streets after deadly crackdown
Protesting against another deadly weekend crackdown on anti-coup protesters, doctors and nurses in central Myanmar marched in the streets at first light on Sunday, avoiding a confrontation with security forces.

The country has been in turmoil since soldiers ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi last month, triggering nationwide protests demanding a return to democracy.

Security forces have responded with lethal force, using live rounds along with tear gas and rubber bullets in an effort to bring the demonstrations to heel.

The violence failed to deter hundreds of doctors and nurses donning hard hats and brandishing posters of Suu Kyi as they marched through Mandalay, Myanmar´s second-largest city and cultural capital.

Mandalay has been the scene of some of the worst violence from police and troops since the coup and local media said the rally was staged at dawn to evade security forces.

The protests came a day after a local monitoring group confirmed the killing of four protesters at the hands of security forces around the country.

Two of the deaths were in Yangon, the country´s commercial hub, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).

Mourners in the city farewelled a 26-year-old who died Saturday while in custody after being shot and arrested the previous night.

Myo Myint Aung´s mother cried over the coffin at the funeral service, saying that her son was still a child in her eyes.

"I am really proud of what you did for democracy and this country," she said, in a video of the funeral service posted on social media.

"You are a real hero."

Overnight, protesters staged a candlelight protest in the northern town of Kale and left signs on the street calling for a United Nations intervention to stop the violence in Myanmar.

Nearly 250 deaths have been confirmed in the weeks since the coup, the AAPP reported, although the true toll could be higher.

More than 2,300 others have been arrested, the group said.

International condemnation by Washington, Brussels, and the United Nations has so far failed to halt the bloodshed.

European Union foreign ministers are expected to approve sanctions against 11 junta officials at a meeting on Monday.

NA-249: PPP asks PML-N to withdraw candidate

NA-249: PPP asks PML-N to withdraw candidate
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate from NA-249 Qadir Mandokhail has asked the PML-N to withdraw its candidate from the constituency saying that it was through his petition filed against Faisal Vawda that forced the latter to quit the National Assembly seat.

“We forced Vawda to left the NA-249 seat after pursuing the case against him in courts for the last two years,” he said in a presser adding that the PML-N did nothing to de-seat the now PTI senator.

He said that only PPP has the right to field the candidate and how it is possible for them to withdraw candidature in favour of PML-N’s Miftah Ismail.

“When PML-N is eyeing to resign from the assemblies then why it is seeking support for its candidate,” he said adding that the PPP had carried out record development works in the Baldia.

He said that the PPP would have withdrawn their candidate if Shahbaz Sharif is fielded for the NA-249 as their candidate.

“I am unable to understand as to why former prime minister [Shahid Khaqan Abbasi] is roaming here and there for this seat,” Qadir Mandokhail said.

The former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has on Saturday called on Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto ahead of by-poll on Karachi’s NA 249 by-polls to seek support.

According to the details on the meeting, the two opposition leaders discussed the impending NA-249 seat elections, which fell vacant after ruling party’s Faisal Vawda relinquished it for his Senate seat.

It may be noted that PML-N’s Shahbaz Sharif contended for this seat in general elections 2018 and after a close call, lost to Vawda.

In the follow-up, Abbasi reached out to Bilawal for his party’s support in the by-polls in which PML-N has fielded the former finance minister Miftah Ismail.

Homework completed' to help Pakistan leave FATF grey list: Hammad

Federal Minister of Industries and Production Hammad Azhar
Federal Minister of Industries and Production Hammad Azhar said Sunday the homework to help Pakistan leave the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) grey list has been "completed".

Speaking to the media here, Hammad Azhar said Pakistan was put on the grey list because of the previous governments but that the PTI regime would "soon" help remove the country from it.

"The Opposition's attitude has always remained negative and always been against the country's integrity," he said. "However, we stand steadfast on our policy to eliminate corruption and return the money."

Speaking of inflation, the federal minister said that food is "becoming more expensive around the world" but the PTI regime is "driving the economy forward".

On relations with Pakistan's east-side neighbour, he said: "We cannot turn a blind eye towards India. We wish to move forward but there should be a positive attitude from the other side as well."

Azhar expressed hope that Prime Minister Imran Khan would soon recover from the coronavirus and "be among us". People, he added, need to be very cautious with regards to COVID-19 and related standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Time to stop giving sacrifices, hold govt accountable: Maryam

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz
PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Sunday declared that it is "now time to stop giving sacrifices and demand accountability" from the government.

During a youth convention in Lahore, she also said that "anyone who speaks against Nawaz Sharif will have their tongues ripped out", without revealing who the remarks were pointed at.

Maryam, during her long address, questioned at length under what basis former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was removed from the seat of power and "who has put the National Accountability Bureau to the task to assess political statements".

She also vowed that the "next government will be formed by PML-N" and asked the incumbent regime to "count its days".

"[Nawaz Sharif] was removed in 2017 on false allegations," she claimed.

"Even today, when they wish to strike against Nawaz Sharif, they have to arrest his brother and summon his daughter before NAB in a political case," Maryam said.

The PML-N vice president said that "when the government tired of all other allegations" NAB has accused her of "speaking against institutions".

"I want to ask and so do the youth. Who has contracted NAB to assess political statements?" she asked.

NAB has summoned Maryam Nawaz on March 26 to respond in a case pertaining to acquisition of land in Raiwind as well as the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case.

She said that if NAB "causes any problems" the PML-N will "fight against them with all their might".

The Pakistan Democratic Movement's long march was interestingly scheduled that same day — it has since been postponed — and Maryam also referred to this. "They were so scared of the long march that they summoned me the very day the long march was (previously) scheduled."

Maryam urged the youth gathered there to show up for the NAB hearing on Friday.

She said that if NAB had a "shred of evidence (against her)" they would have flashed a paper confidently before people and not shamefully declared in court that they want her bail cancelled "because she is speaking out".

"She is not speaking out against institutions. You are only sore because she is exposing you," Maryam said to the anti-corruption watchdog.

The PML-N vice president said that NAB is also "sore that their master Imran Khan is being exposed in front of everyone for robbing the people of wheat, sugar, gas, electricity and their votes".

Maryam said that they are out to "remove her from the equation" — amid Nawaz Sharif living abroad — with the aim that "maybe the anti-government movement will be weakened this way".

She said NAB is mistaken if it believes it will scare her. "I lived in a death cell by myself," she said.

To chants of "Maryam, Maryam" that followed, she said that the day she was released, a jail official told her: "Madam I am telling you this today, the patience with which you served your sentence in a death cell, I have never before witnessed in my 28 years of service any man having done the same."

"I am not like Imran Khan with an armed police guard standing outside for a getaway by climbing over the wall," she followed by saying.

Maryam went on to say that if the "fake government" had any "real sway" then despite having "forcibly obtained" election results in their favour, "fake" Imran Khan's "would not have been in the state he is today".

The PML-N vice president said that Nawaz Sharif, when he was premier, "refused to resign" after which he was removed with the Panama Papers case "on a small iqama technicality".

Maryam said that Nawaz Sharif's vision "saw Pakistan get the China-Economic Corridor, an end to 22-hour long loadshedding with power generation plants completed within three years, the Rapid Bus, the Orange Line Train, and eradication of terrorism with the Zarb-e-Azm and Raddul Fasaad Operations".

In criticism of the vision, in comparison, of the prime minister — who she referred to as "jaali hukumraan, Na Laaiq-e-Azam, Taabedaar Khan" — she said it consists of "eggs, calves and chickens".

She said (former chief minister of Punjab) Shahbaz Sharif left behind a "sparkling clean Punjab" which has now been reduced to "a mound of garbage".

Maryam said the PML-N also salutes Khawaja Asif who said he will "go to jail but not leave Nawaz Sharif's side".

The party vice president said the "next government will InshaAllah be PML-N's government".

She recalled how retired Gen Pervez Musharraf, when in power, would say that "Nawaz Sharif is history" but then later "had to watch him on television take an oath for the third time".

Maryam said the government must "stop thinking of Nawaz Sharif and Maryam" and instead "count its days".

"I have heard there is a Rs6 per unit increase in electricity. [...] This will mean an increase in prices for everything."

She said the PML-N "knows that if it allows the government to continue for the next two-and-a-half years, its name might be erased from the pages of history" but the prime minister "has the gall to say he will mobilise the public" against the Opposition.

"What will you tell the people? 'Come with me. The way I wrecked your lives before, let me wreck them again'?" Maryam asked mockingly.

Maryam also told the youth gathered that they must "see the government to its end" and if any leader is "cursed or attacked" they must see to a response in the same measure.

Speaking of the Daska by-election in the NA-75 constituency, she said if the government had even an ounce of confidence that they would win, they would have called for a re-election, instead of going to the Election Commission of Pakistan and then the Supreme Court, asking them to "save us from PML-N".

"Wherever there is an election, InshaAllah Nawaz Sharif will win [...] and wherever there is election rigging and underhanded dealing, you will see that we have lost," Maryam said.

The PML-N vice president claimed that she cannot name who told her this, but someone from the ruling party gave her a message that "we have told our party, no matter how much rigging the PTI does in the upcoming polls [...] PML-N will clean sweep the elections".

Maryam further claimed that when Yousaf Raza Gillani was contesting against Abdul Hafeez Shaikh for Islamabad's Senate seat, "someone" told her that certain National Assembly members wished to speak to her.

She said that she thought they are from PML-N, but was instead told "no these MNAs are from PTI" and claimed that the lawmakers told her they will vote for PPP but seek a PML-N ticket.

The PML-N vice president said that when Senate polls were taking place in Punjab, aside from the senators that were running, there were "some 30 votes that were extra" so it was thought that a fourth senator be fielded and later the thought was they should be withdrawn. She claimed PTI lawmakers called the party not to withdraw the candidate as they "wish to cast their votes in PML-N's favour".
